He was arrested in Shelby, NC and was apparently headed to Tennessee. His statements indicated that his motives were racially motivated. That is something I simply cannot comprehend.
I feel blessed that I had Mrs. Katherine Sudderth as a Teacher's Aide in kindergarten. When in kindergarten, I did not understand that there was a difference in races. When I was born, there was nothing in my innocent brain telling me that one race was superior or inferior to another. I learned we were all equal unless we proved ourselves otherwise.
Mrs. Sudderth was a wonderful lady who taught me so much. I remember sitting in class while she taught me how to tell time using a large clock (the kind with a large hand for minutes and a small hand for the hours. I can still see that cardboard clock to this day.) She was a patient, kind and wonderful lady who took a special interest in her students. I never thought of her as “black” or “African American.” My family did not understand what “politically correct” term to use at the time. Instead of labeling her by her race, I saw her as one special lady who had a tremendous impact and positive influence on my life and my education. Her race was not important. I am very thankful that she was there for me at such an impressionable age. I remember visiting her home as an adult to say “Thank You” for being such a positive role model. I wish I had visited her more often. She lived in a small home surrounded by neatly trimmed hedge bushes near Texana Baptist Church. I remember loving those hedges. I know she put a lot of love into her home, her yard and her family … just as she did with her students.
One of the things I learned at an early age is not to judge a person based on the color of their skin or their political/religious beliefs. Instead, I was taught to show respect and appreciation to those who make a positive contribution to their community, regardless of how that person is different from you. I learned that a person's character was most important.
If you are reading this and are a friend or family member of Mrs. Katherine Sudderth, please know that she meant the world to me. She was an incredible influence on me and so many other students. I am very thankful that she was a part of my life. I am grateful that I was never taught to fear those who are different from me, but to respect the diversity.
When a baby comes into the world, he or she is not born with hatred in their hearts based on race. Hatred is a learned behavior. But then again, so is love. So please teach your kids to love. The world will be a much better place as a result.
