Meet Elaina Karayannis. She's a Beatles fan (YAAY!), a college student and, for the last nine years, she's suffered from Lyme Disease, a painful and debilitating bacterial infection that is transmitted by a tick bite. Pennsylvania has the highest number of Lyme Disease cases in the country, and Chester County leads the state in Lyme cases.
Elaina volunteers at the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern PA (LDASEPA), and she has helped to organize their first ever Lyme Disease Awareness Walk. It's THIS Saturday at Elwood L. Crossan Park in beautiful Landenberg, Chester County, PA. Proceeds benefit LDASEPA's continued work of information, support and prevention of Lyme Disease. The registration begins at 9am and the walk starts at 10am. Registration includes a t-shirt (and a bandana, if you're bringing your pooch!)
For registration info, and to find out about LDASEPA, visit LymePa.org.

One has only to see Jack Blades perform live to know that he was born to make music. With a new album entitled Rock 'n Roll Ride and a myriad of upcoming tour dates with Night Ranger, he continues to share his gift of songwriting with the world. Jack's schedule is always full, and in this interview he talks about filming a new TV show called Rock Star Kitchen, hitting the golf course with Alice Cooper, singing the National Anthem at a recent NASCAR race (and cruising around the track at 170mph!), guesting on two Fox News talk shows (Hannity and Red Eye), appearing on Celebrity Ghost Stories, what kind of music he likes to listen to when he's not MAKING music, and what he might be doing today if he weren't a musician. Oh, and he also talks about his new solo album. The interview is in 3 parts; click on the links to the right to listen.

This was sent to me by Mary Kate Radomski, about her friend Lauren Buben's effort to help a sweet little girl named Hannah's dream come true. It's night of fun at a variety show, taking place at Gwynedd Mercy College on May 18. The show starts at 8pm. Get details, and make a donation, by clicking here.

Thanks for your support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

Lauren Buben's Story
Since 1980 when a boy named Chris wished to be a police officer, the Make-A-Wish Foundation®has granted the wishes of more than 240,000 children - one wish every 40 minutes. My name is Lauren Buben, and as a Make-A-Wish Foundation supporter and previous Wish child myself, I have seen the remarkable power of a wish firsthand - the gift of hope, strength and joy is immeasurable to a seriously ill child. After undergoing chemotherapy to treat Leukemia when I was three years old, I know a wish does what no medicine can by bringing precious moments of respite and joy to children, their families and even entire communities.
Children like me, who wanted a trip to Disney World and celebration in Cinderella's castle, are living their fondest wish because of the compassion and generosity of people like you. Your donations help create opportunities that make hospital beds and chemotherapy things of the past. Help me pay it forward, a Make-A-Wish alumni to a current Make-A-Wish Child.
Please join me in making a difference in the life of a child by contributing to our event, Broadway Wishes, a night of scenes and songs put on by students from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, LaSalle College High School, Gwynedd Mercy Academy, and Upper Dublin High School. We will perform some of our favorite show tunes from shows such as The Drowsy Chaperone, Chicago, Aida, Footloose, Spring Awakening, Pippin, Wicked, and Hairspray to sponsor a Make-A-Wish recipient, an 11 year old brain tumor patient named Hannah. Hannah's wish is to travel to New York City and be an extra on Broadway, and our fundraising will give this opportunity to her. Thank you for your support as we perform our way to make a wish come true.

WMGK is proud to welcome singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Timothy B. Schmit to Philadelphia for a solo show at the Keswick Theatre on May 31st. You probably know him best as a member of the Eagles, and Poco before that, but his voice is all over some of the biggest Classic Rock albums ever recorded, including the works of Steely Dan, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Bob Seger to name just a few. He's getting ready to hit the road with his own band for some more dates in support of his latest release Expando, and was kind enough to take the time to call and chat about these upcoming shows, his recent visit to South Africa with the Eagles, receiving an honorary Doctorate degree from Berklee, writing new music, and one of his favorite places to visit in Philly. The interview is in two parts -- click on the links to the right to listen.

Put this on your list of new albums to buy! Legendary 80’s rocker, Greg Kihn, is proud to announce the release of his new album, Greg Kihn Band: Best of Berserkley, 1974-1985, as both hardcopy CD and digital download. The album contains 21 tracks and features 19 Greg Kihn remastered original hits drawn from his eight-of-nine full-length Beserkley Records studio albums, including The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘em Like That), Jeopardy, Happy Man and Reunited, along with two tribute tracks to Bruce Springsteen (long considered one of Greg’s biggest musical influences), Rendezvous and For You.
In the late 80’s, Beserkley Records sold the original Greg Kihn Band master recordings, along with the rest of the Beserkley Records catalog. After many years of legal wranglings, Greg finally obtained the rights to release his back catalog from this seminal era of his musical career. Existing diehard and new fans who have followed Greg Kihn from the beginning of his career as a folkie/pop-rock troubadour to one of the most recognizable and popular Gold-selling video Rock Stars during MTV’s 1980’s glory years will want to add this essential compilation to their classic rock music collection.
I recently caught up with Greg about this release and other projects...
Kathy Wagner (KW) - Congrats on the release of Best of Berserkley, 1974-1985. In addition to 19 remastered original hits, I understand it contains two tribute tracks to Bruce Springsteen, "Rendezvous" and "For You".... tell me about those tracks?
Greg Kihn (GK) - At the time (1977 or so) there were only 2 other Springsteen covers. The Pointer Sisters (Fire) and the Hollies (Sandy from Asbury Park). So I was among the first to seriously cover the Boss and I had envisioned a Byrds-like arrangement with jangly 12-string Rickenbackers and nice harmonies. So I did this (in one take!) at the old CBS studios in San Francisco and Bruce liked it so much, he started doing my version LIVE! Way cool, and then he showed up backstage at the Roxy in LA and gave me Rendezvous.
KW – With such a large catalog to draw from, it must have been difficult to narrow down the list of songs that you chose to include on this album. If you had to choose just a few, which of the 19 remastered hits are you the most proud of? Which songs still mean the most to you today?
GK - I’ve been fighting to get the rights to release all this early material for years and I finally obtained the rights to the master recordings. First thing I did was put out this “greatest hits” compilation containing a song or two from each album. I had a ball going through the old 2-track tapes and digitally remastering it. It was surprisingly easy to choose these songs… many choose themselves.
KW - I've gotta touch on the video for "Jeopardy." In the early days of MTV, it was played in such heavy rotation that it's burned into my memory -- I can still "see it" in my head whenever I hear the song -- there's a lot to be said for that. Many other videos were not nearly as memorable! Where did the idea for that video originate?
GK - That was inspired by “Night of the Living Dead” and directed by Joe Dea who did a great job on the special effects. We were on a shoestring budget and we really had to get creative. MTV loved it and played it heavily because it was one of the first “concept” videos that told a story.
KW - You've just announced a CD Release / Reunion Party for May 19th at the Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz. What can fans expect at this show? Who will be performing in your band?
GK - Well, unfortunately, many former members of the band are no longer with us and that’s a drag; Dave Carpender, Mark Ross, and Gary Phillips are gone. But we’ve got original drummer Larry Lynch, bass player Steve Wright, and Greg Douglass (from the jeopardy era on lead guitar.) The current lineup of the GKB is my son Ry on lead guitar, Robert Berry on bass, Dave Medd on keys, and Dave Danza on drums. I can’t wait. We’re even going to rehearse for this one!
KW – When I mentioned to a few people that I'd be doing an interview with you, more than one person immediately chimed in with, "Did you know that he's a horror writer?" High praise was given to "Horror Show" (1997). For someone who has never read any of your novels, which book would you recommend they start with? Best to go with the first one, or would it be okay to start with the most recent and work your way back?
GK - The best one to start with is “Horror Show,” which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award. But, they all stand up individually as well.
KW - Have you ever considered writing an autobiography?
GK - Actually, yes, I was thinking about it doing it sometime soon while I still have my wits about me. All I need is a catchy title…
KW - I understand you have a screenplay in development for a new cable series about how the mafia ran the music industry in New York City during the early 1960's, titled "45 RPM" and described as a cross between "The Sopranos-- Meets-- Almost Famous." Tell me about this, and do you have any actors / actresses in mind to play certain roles? (perhaps yourself??)
GK - I am not an actor and besides, we need young studly dudes to play these roles. It’s about the mafia in the music business, so all the actors either need to be Goombahs (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=goombah) or rock stars.
KW - You've been a DJ at KFOX since 1994. How did this gig begin, and do you remember what your very first airshift was like? Were you nervous? Did you make any embarrassing mistakes? And what do you enjoy most about being on the air at KFOX?
GK - I hate getting up in the morning, but I love it once I get to the station and start talking. I am addicted to talking to a million people everyday. It’s a lot of fun. Radio is easy for me, it’s not really “working”. They pay you to get up and drive to the studio… that’s the work part… the show is the fun stuff!
KW - Of all the people you've interviewed as a DJ, who was your favorite person to interview and why?
GK - I love talking to all my old friends from the rock and roll wars like Eddie Money, Joan Jett, Steve Miller, Robin Zander, Rick Neilson, Neal Schon, and Huey Lewis, guys like that.
KW - In addition to the CD Release Party on May 19th, you also have a big show planned with the Steve Miller Band and Pat Benatar at the Shore Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on July 14th. Are there plans to tour any other cities this year?
GK - There are no plans to take it on tour. I do about 8 gigs per year in the San Francisco Bay Area and infrequent appearances in other states or parts of the world, which is enough for me.
KW - I'm an animal lover, so I've gotta ask -- Do you have any pets?
GK - I’m a cat person, and I have 2 cats- Mojo and Zuzu. Both are female torties, IE; Calicos. Mojo I’ve had for 15 years and Zuzu is 4 years younger. I used to have third but we had to put him down because of cancer. It broke our hearts, but there was no other choice for Bijou. Mojo is pretty much retired these days and spends most of the time sleeping.
KW - My last question is a standard question that I always ask -- and I'll have to phrase it a little differently for you, since you wear so many hats! It's usually "If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?" But in your case, it will be a little longer! If you weren't a musician, and an author, and a DJ, is there anything else you might have been interested in doing?
GK - If I wasn’t a musician, I would be in radio and a writer, both of which I do anyway.

This coming Saturday, I’ll be the DJ for the Lyme Light Fashion Show, an annual fundraising and awareness event to shine a light on the impact of Lyme Disease.
Pennsylvania is #1 in the US in reported Lyme disease cases with almost 7500 cases reported for 2011.
Now in its third year, the Lyme Light Fashion Show will feature models from John Powers Modeling Agency, and others, to show off some fashions, a silent auction, raffle prizes, along with tables for medical professionals, and other stores and vendors.
Actress Amy Tiehel, with the help of her Oscar-winning sister, film producer Tammy Tiehel have put together videos to tell the stories of some of the Lyme youth models and talk about prevention. These videos will be shown for the first time anywhere at this event.
Local designer, Nicole Rae Styer, whose top I wore to the Grammy Nominees Party in February 2012 (pictured here with Weird Al Yankovich and CD Producer Steve Pullara) will be featured in the fashion show along with others.
Nicole has a shop at 1822 E Passyunk Avenue in South Philly and makes every piece by hand right here. If you’re looking for clothes made in America, look no further than Nicole Rae Styer. Her designs are fun, well-made and affordable. See some of her work on Facebook under her name or Nicole Rae Styer Boutique.
Come to the fashion show! See prices below. The money goes to a good cause: Fighting Lyme disease. On Facebook – search MontCoLyme's Lyme Light Fashion Show.

With the death of Dick Clark yesterday at the age of 82, Philadelphia and the rest of the world lost a huge music champion. Action News had excellent coverage that included interviews with Chubby Checker and Jerry "The Geator" Blavat, who had Dick Clark write the intro to his recent book. Here are a few of the outstanding videos about Dick Clark that have surfaced.
My original Rock Review that aired on Eyewitness News in 1980. I was a DJ on 94 WYSP at the time; thus the "Rating" I gave Dick Clark at the end of the report: a "94".

Movie: SAFE - filmed in Philadelphia - opens April 27

The movie “Safe” that was filmed here in Philadelphia opens in theatres April 27. Although the storyline is set in New York where the exteriors were filmed, the interior scenes were made here.
As a background actor, (“extra”) in the film, my scene took place inside the Bellevue Hotel lobby and involved the main character played by Jason Straham holding up the clerk at the hotel desk. Gunshots were heard, and I was directed to run away toward the exit of the lobby.
I remember having my wardrobe inspected by Ann Roth, an Academy Award winning costume designer whose name evokes major respect in the film industry. She screamed out, “Where are the furs?” because none of us were wearing any mink stoles or fur coats, and she felt the scene required very wealthy looking hotel patrons. My rather ordinary green raincoat had to suffice but she positioned my Liz Claiborne scarf around the collar to enhance my “wealthy look.”
Writer/Director Boaz Yakin was pleased to work here as he said in a press release, “The Mayor and the city of Philadelphia went out of their way to accommodate us. They would let us shut down streets. They were always asking us what they could do to help as opposed to making us feel were a burden. Shooting there turned out to be great and I’m grateful for the help they gave us.”
One of the largest sets was built inside of Girard College serving as the Triad’s casino in the film. Other area locations included a home in Holmes, Pa, to serve as Luke Wright’s home. Parx casino in Bensalem, Pa was also used. The Bloomfield Estate in Villanova filled in for New York’s mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion.
Mark Mothersbaugh, former lead singer and founder of the alternative band, Devo, composed the musical score. Mothersbaugh has become a sought-after and very successful composer, writing musical scores for movies and television.
A trailer for the film can be seen here.
Rated R for strong violence throughout, and for language
95 minutes

After a successful run of winter shows, groundbreaking vocalist, songwriter and bass player TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT – well-known for his work as a member of THE EAGLES and Poco – is gearing up for a spring U.S. tour with his band starting May 18. For the three-week trek (see dates below), TIMOTHY and his full band will perform songs from his fifth solo album EXPANDO (2009, Lost Highway/Universal) as well as gems by THE EAGLES and Poco. Tickets are on-sale today, visit: www.timothybschmit.com.
TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT explains the impetus for the spring run of dates: “What I like best about doing solo shows is it gives me a chance to interact with the audience in a smaller, more intimate setting. But, don’t get me wrong. I very much enjoy being a part of the Eagles and all it implies. For instance, as of this writing, I find myself in a hotel in the exotic city of Dubai where we (The Eagles) will end a short tour that started in South Africa. After a few more scattered shows in the U.S., I look forward to taking my own band out on the road and having a completely different experience. I’m a fortunate man. I get the best of both worlds.”
For SCHMIT–a three-time Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee–EXPANDO presents a diverse mix of Americana, folk, country, rock and blues. Written and produced by SCHMIT, EXPANDO features an eclectic array of iconic artists including The Blind Boys of Alabama, Garth Hudson, Kid Rock, Graham Nash, Van Dyke Parks, Benmont Tench and Dwight Yoakam, among others. Highlights on the varied 11-song disc include “Downtime,” “One More Mile,” “White Boy From Sacramento,” “Good Day,” “Friday Night” and “Parachute.”
The spring trek will take TIMOTHY and his bandmates to clubs offering an intimate vibe. The tour will include an appearance at the Cherokee Creek Music Festival in Cherokee, TX and visit the following U.S. cities Corpus Christi (May 20, Brewster Street Ice House), Austin, TX (May 22, La Zona Rosa), Clearwater, FL (May 24, Capitol Theatre), Washington, DC (May 28, The Hamilton), New York, NY (May 29, B.B. Kings Blues Club), Glenside, PA (May 31, Keswick Theatre), Ridgefield, CT (June 2, Ridgefield Playhouse), Annapolis, MD (June 4, Rams Head On Stage), Pittsburgh, PA (June 6, Three Rivers Arts Festival), Huntington, NY (June 8, The Paramount), and Newton, NJ (June 9, Newton Theatre).

Much-beloved singer/songwriter/frontman/producer/bass player extraordinaire Jack Blades has released his brand new solo album, ROCK N’ ROLL RIDE, via Frontiers Records. The new record marks Blades’ second solo release for the label. Hot off the heels of Night Ranger’s celebrated 2011 CD, SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA, and a massive North American tour with Night Ranger as support for Journey and Foreigner last year, Blades shows no signs of slowing down with his buoyant new album. Of the new offering, Blades commented, “ROCK N’ ROLL RIDE is an extension of what my music has been for the last 30 years. It has been quite a rock n’ roll ride and I decided to lay it all down on a record!”
ROCK N’ ROLL RIDE features contributions from Blades’ Night Ranger bandmates Brad Gillis, Kelly Keagy, Joel Hoekstra and Eric Levy, as well as a special guest appearance by Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander. Check out the video for the first single from the album, “Back In The Game”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpOPMYadzrE
Jack Blades is a frontman, lead singer, bassist, songwriter, and producer as well as a founding member of the highly-successful arena rock band, Night Ranger and supergroup Damn Yankees (along with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw from Styx) and the highly-regarded Shaw/Blades. Throughout his remarkable career Blades has sold over 25 million albums, performed in front of millions of fans worldwide and collaborated with some of rock's most legendary artists. With a career spanning three decades, Blades has recorded with, penned songs and produced albums for some of the music industry's biggest names including Aerosmith, Cher, Ringo Star, Alice Cooper, Roger Daltrey, Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Styx, Ted Nugent, Motley Crue and Vince Neil. His music has been featured in movies such as Armageddon, Boogie Nights, Tommy Boy, television shows such as “South Park” and “American Dad,” the hit Broadway musical (and soon-to-be released major motion picture) Rock of Ages and the wildly successful videogame series "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero". With Blades’ songwriting, driving guitars, stage antics and on the strength of Night Ranger's songs “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” “Rock in America,” “Sister Christian,” “When You Close Your Eyes,” and “Sentimental Street”, along with the Damn Yankees hits "High Enough" and "Coming of Age", Blades' legacy continues to inspire generations while still being written.

The Tony-Award winning play,” God of Carnage” opened at the Walnut Street Theater on March 21 and runs through April 29. The play was on Broadway in 2009 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards; it won three of the seven, including Best Play.
Hailed as “First class! A four-way prize fight,” GOD OF CARNAGE is a comedy of manners without the manners. Two sets of parents come together to discuss a squirmish their sons had on the playground. It starts out civilized but as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish themselves; calling each other names, shouting, cursing, drinking and even vomitng, leaving the audience amused and loudly laughing.
Performing as husband and wife is the real-life husband and wife couple, Greg Wood and Susan Riley Stevens. This is not the first time the two veteran actors have worked together on the Walnut Stage. I wrote about their time together in Fallen Angel on this blog. Rounding out the cast is Julie Czarnecki and Ben Lipitz. All four performances are strong and funny.
The New York cast featured Marcia Gay Harden, James Gandolfini, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels. After 450 performances on Broadway, the same actors took the show to Los Angeles last year for a short run.

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus makes a short stop at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia for six days only. I had a chance to catch the Opening Night at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday Feb 22).
“The Greatest Show on Earth” doesn’t disappoint. Taking the full floor of the Wells Fargo Center, the Ringmaster leads the show through acrobatics, rings of fire, elephants, lions, tigers, dogs and cats. How do they train the animals to do what they do? It’s nothing short of amazing.
Then there are the human stunts. Picture eight men on motorcycles inside a large ball, driving horizontally in a circle at break-neck speeds. How do they do that and not smash into each other?
Men balancing on high beams, then flipping into the air and landing on the beam; How do they do that?
This event honors the Year of the Dragon that encompasses courage, strength, wisdom and heart, all exemplified on stage by the many talented, highly athletic performers, well worth seeing!

Today I had a chance to preview the Bruce Springsteen exhibition that’s opening on Friday, Feb 17 at the National Constitution Center. It’s kind of odd in a way, to see a rock star’s name hanging in the front of that dramatic building at 5th and Arch and to hear “Trapped” by Springsteen coming out of the speakers as I approached the doors. But this is a very vital, modern venue with free thinkers like the ones that wrote our constitution to begin with. The Center’s motto these days is “Freedom is Calling.” Well, it’s calling our name because this exhibition is all about rock ‘n roll and the freedom to express ourselves through it.
What better artist to represent freedom, rock ‘n roll, and expression than Bruuuuuuce?
Any fan will enjoy being transported through the life and artifacts of one Bruce Springsteen. I especially enjoyed hearing his early audition tapes, watching him play piano in a video, and seeing the Oscar he won for Best Original Song (“Streets of Philadelphia” that opened the film “Philadelphia”).
You may have seen this exhibition in Cleveland when it ran there for two years 2009-11. Philly is the first town to get it since that original, successful run. It’s not known whether it will travel anywhere else.
When Bruce played the Grammys the other night, he needed a guitar for his performance that was already on display here in town. Part of his agreement is that anything he might need during the run of this show, he can have. He never ended up playing the guitar he borrowed on the Grammys, and it was returned yesterday in time for the opening tomorrow.
And speaking of the Grammys, photographer Danny Clinch has worked with Springsteen multiple times and many of his photos are featured in this exhibit. I was able to meet him backstage at the Grammys because for the past few years, Clinch has been the one that makes the official Grammy portraits of all the winners, one at a time. There he was with his hat, lots of props for the shoot, and a good sense of humor.
Did Bruce attend the exhibition when it was up in Cleveland? Only once according to the Constitution Center’s Public Relations Manager, Lauren A. Saul. Apparently he came incognito on the last day. Well, he’s coming to Philly March 28 & 29 to play with his E Street Band at the Wells Fargo Center. Will he stop in to see the exhibition during his visit here? Nobody knows.
The exhibition runs February 17 though September 3, 2012. To find out more, visit the National Constitution Center’s website.

It’s been three full days since the big Grammy win, and I am still reeling.
I was lucky to be invited by Steve Pullara, a Warminster children’s performer, to be part of a CD he co-produced called “All About Bullies…Big and Small.” I read a poem called “Rolling with It” written by Gloria Domina (also a co-producer).
When it was nominated for a Grammy, I decided to make the trip to California to see if we would win.
The CD's producers were invited to bring a guest to the ceremonies and parties. I got to be Steve’s guest and had carte blanche to everything – the parties, the ceremonies and the backstage interviews.
The ten of us (four producers and their guests and others) all stayed at the same hotel in Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles. We traveled around L.A. in a van and had a limo take us to and from the Grammys. We walked the red carpet, went up on stage when our CD was announced as the winner, and backstage for the press interviews and photographs.
The pre-telecast ceremony was at the Los Angeles Convention Center at 1 pm and then the big Grammys show that airs on TV followed at 5 pm (It’s west coast time, remember).
Other nominees and their guests attended the pre-telecast ceremony where 68 awards were given out. Our category, Best Children’s Album, was #35.
I saw Emmy Lou Harris sitting nearby and took a picture with her. She was nominated for Best Americana Album but it went to Levon Helm. I told her I work with a friend of hers, Michael Tearson, and she said “Oh, I’ve known him for years!”
Everyone from Skrillex to Tony Bennett took the stage for his or her acceptance speeches until finally it was time for our category.
OK Go presented our award. When they announced our name, we all jumped up and headed for the stage. It was great to be up there with Debbi Calton who performed two spoken word tracks on the CD.
There were about 15 of us on stage and each one of the producers took the mic and said a few words. The ceremony was streaming online, and our whole segment was uploaded later to You Tube by one of Steve’s friends.
It was really nice to be standing up there on the stage being acknowledged in this way for a body of work that started as nothing but became elevated into this bigger stratosphere. A Grammy gives the CD credibility, a sense of importance and the ultimate affirmation. There is no better compliment in the music industry because our peers – other members of the Recording Academy - like musicians, producers, and writers, voted.
And you wouldn’t believe the press we’ve gotten. I can’t keep up with it even with Google alerts set. I’m still getting links to sites with different pictures of us and articles from all kinds of places.
When we went backstage to be interviewed by the press, Steve kept saying things like “we really wanted to work with Lady Gaga” and “If Mrs. Obama would like us to do anything, we’d love to help out” because you never know where his quote might end up and who might read it, see it or hear it (all modes of media were present).
Ultimately, we are all hoping that the CD will be heard and the messages will be felt in a positive way.
After a series of interviews and photographs backstage at the Staples Center, phone calls and facebook postings, we found our seats inside for the big show. Our seats were on the floor about 20 rows back. And what a show it was. It’s way better than watching it on TV!
The Staples Center is like our Wells Fargo Center. You can’t get a ticket to this show unless you are connected somehow to the Recording Academy (NARAS – National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences). Either you are a member, or you are a guest of a member, or a member provided a way in for you. And the tickets aren’t cheap. But if you’re a nominee, you get a pair of tickets for free.
Debbi wrote a great review of the concert and has lots of details about her time in L.A. The show itself was a very unique experience because there was so much going on. Every five minutes a new act came on stage. There are major stars walking by and it was fun to be part of a live television broadcast.
Overall, a fantastic, magical time that all of us will never forget.
Please visit the “All About Bullies…Big and Small” website to find out how you can purchase and own this very special CD.

PAUL AND RINGO RELEASE TWO VERY DIFFERENT NEW ALBUMS

In the span of just one week’s time, both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are releasing new studio albums. That is quite a nice treat coming from two guys who don’t really need to put out another album, or perform another concert. They could just as easily collect massive royalty and publishing checks for the remainder of their lives and rest on their laurels, enjoying their amazing combined musical accomplishments.

Paul and Ringo, however, don’t work that way. They are musicians and entertainers, first and foremost. They love to please their fans, and themselves, with each new project and, in listening to these two albums, you can’t deny that they still really LOVE making music.

Ringo Starr’s 17th studio album, called “Ringo 2012,” is a star-studded affair, as Ringo is joined on the album by the likes of Joe Walsh (his brother-in-law), Edgar Winter, Don Was and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, among others. Though the album, runs a little short, just 28 minutes on a CD that can hold 80, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a Ringo album of late; well-played, melodic, toe-tapping songs that are enjoyable to hear. Which is why it has always puzzled me how some Beatles fans continue to diss the guy. He’s having fun, he’s making music, HE’S ONE OF THE BEATLES, for goodness sake! I, for one, am grateful he’s still making the effort.

Paul McCartney, on the other hand, dives into a totally new concept (for him) for his new studio album, his first in almost five years. It’s an album of standards and, yes, it’s been done before (let’s not forget which rock star did it first – RINGO!) For “Kisses On The Bottom,” which comes out on 2/7, Paul goes back to performing the songs he heard while growing up in the Allerton section of Liverpool, tunes from The Great American Songbook that his parents would play and sing, as he first started discovering the beautiful melodies that would influence him at many points during his career. Songs like “Always,” written by the great Irving Berlin, “More I Cannot Wish You,” penned by Frank Loesser and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter” which was a hit for Fats Waller in 1935, make up this very ambitious effort. There are two McCartney-penned tracks on the CD; “My Valentine” is one, which was written for his new bride Nancy Shevell and performed by Paul at their wedding last year, and “Only Our Hearts” which features a very tasty harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder. Eric Clapton also guests on guitar on two songs, giving these beautifully written, arranged and sung standards a bit of an edge.

Rather than play his signature bass, guitar or keyboard, Paul’s only instrument on the album is his voice. He utilized the talents of Diana Krall and her backing band to accompany him on the album.

I guess it’s inevitable that not every Paul fan will welcome this CD with an open mind. I’m already hearing rumblings of “when will he make another rock album?” among some of his fans, but this is where Paul’s head is musically at this very moment and I am very thrilled he’s gone down that path.

I had the rare treat of seeing this comic master Saturday night (Jan 14) and he was fantastic. How cool was it to see Seinfeld in person, and hearing that oh-so-famous voice. Read my review here.
I'll be on the air this Monday night, Martin Luther King, Jr Day for Ray Koob 7 p.m. - midnight. Talk to you then!

The biggest nightmare for any singer would be losing your voice. A few years ago, Timothy had a close call in that department. In part 6, he discusses what happened, and what he did (and continues to do) to keep his voice in such good shape. His diligence has paid off, because he still has one of the most amazing voices I've ever listened to.

In October of 2009, Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit stopped by the studio to talk about his new solo album, Expando, which features several special guests including Graham Nash, Garth Hudson, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kid Rock, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. He was very generous with his time and it was a pleasure speaking with such a class act. Since the interview was so long, it has been broken down into several parts. Click the link to the right to hear Part 1 -- he discusses what it was like performing in smaller venues, and introduces us to his band.
