The Great Gatsby: music is a highlight

The Great Gatsby is a perfect escape film. It&rsquo;s so highly stylized, it&rsquo;s a wonder just to watch it - and in 3D no less!&nbsp; It is filmmaking at its finest. And one of the most compelling parts about it is the music. Although the story is set in the Roaring Twenties the music interspersed atmospherically throughout is by contemporary artists: Jay Z, Florence and the Machine, and most notably, Lana Del Rey. Her stunning &ldquo;Young and Beautiful&rdquo; will be released for the first time on the film&rsquo;s soundtrack (May 7th) and is the single. For me, it was the most moving part of the film. &nbsp;
&ldquo;Will you still love me when I&rsquo;m no longer young and beautiful?&rdquo; the haunting lyrics beckon. &rdquo;Will you still love me when I got nothing but an aching soul?&rdquo;
In a review by Idolator: &ldquo;&rsquo;Cinematic&rsquo; is a word that people throw around a lot when talking about Lana Del Rey&rsquo;s music, which makes sense, given that her entire artistic identity is a loving pastiche of a lot of movie references &mdash; and fittingly, her big soundtrack song for a big Hollywood movie packs all the sweep and grandeur of a classic film, warm and nostalgic and sadly beautiful. Frankly, it makes us feel a lot of things.&rdquo;
Based on the great American novel by F Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby takes place in Long Island in the 1920s at the mansions of two very wealthy people. Tom Buchanon (Joel Edgerton) described as one of the wealthiest people in the US at the time, and Jay Gatsby, (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is also very rich.
Writer/Producer/Director Baz Luhrmann is no stranger to interpreting great works, having successfully taken on Shakesphere&rsquo;s Romeo and Juliet where he also directed Leonardo DiCaprio. &nbsp;About the music in the film, Luhrmann told the Los Angeles Times: "F. Scott Fitzgerald&rsquo;s novel is peppered with contemporary music references specific to the story&rsquo;s setting of 1922.&nbsp; While we acknowledge, as Fitzgerald phrased it, &lsquo;the Jazz Age,&rsquo; and this is the period represented on screen, we&mdash;our audience&mdash;are living in the &lsquo;hip-hop age&rsquo; and want our viewers to feel the impact of modern-day music the way Fitzgerald did for the readers of his novel at the time of its publication. Now there&rsquo;s another form of African American street music &mdash; hip hop &mdash; that speaks in exactly the same way to our lives.&rdquo;
Luhrmann used the contemporary music in an effort to be faithful to the book and the epoch and also to make the story accessible for a new generation, to create a cultural weave. His collaborating with ground-breaking artist and executive producer on the film, Shawn &ldquo;JAY Z&rdquo; Carter&mdash;was an integral part of this weave. Another credit on Jay Z's resume is curating the 2-day festival Made in America that debuted in Philadelphia last Labor Day weekend, and comes to our town again this year.
Screenwriter Craig Pearce explains, &ldquo;We wanted to allow people to feel what it would&rsquo;ve felt like to live in that incredibly modern time, when the world was being born and everyone was so young and so beautiful and so drunk and so crazy and so rich and living like that,&rdquo; &ldquo;We wanted it to feel exactly how it would feel to us to be going to the most amazing nightclub in the world and driving the fastest car you&rsquo;ve ever driven. We had to make some decisions early on about what music we&rsquo;d use, and how to present the story using music.&rdquo;
Author Fitzgerald himself included over 70 popular songs in his writings, including the 1922 number one hit &ldquo;Three O&rsquo;Clock in the Morning&rdquo; in Gatsby.
The soundtrack is available now and here are the tracks/artists:
1. &nbsp;&nbsp;100$ Bill - JAY Z2. &nbsp;&nbsp;Back To Black - Beyonc&eacute; x Andr&eacute; 30003. &nbsp;&nbsp;Bang Bang -&nbsp;will.i.am4. &nbsp;&nbsp;A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) - Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock5. &nbsp;&nbsp;Young And Beautiful - Lana Del Rey6. &nbsp;&nbsp;Love Is The Drug -&nbsp;Bryan Ferry with&nbsp;The Bryan Ferry Orchestra7. &nbsp;&nbsp;Over The Love -&nbsp;Florence + The Machine8.&nbsp; &nbsp;Where The Wind Blows - Coco O. of Quadron9. &nbsp; Crazy in Love - Emeli Sand&eacute; and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra10. &nbsp;Together &ndash; The xx11. &nbsp;Hearts A Mess&nbsp;- Gotye12. &nbsp;Love Is Blindness &ndash;&nbsp;Jack White (a U2 song)13. &nbsp;Into the Past - Nero14. &nbsp;Kill and Run&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;Sia

Two films worth seeing: Disconnect and Place Behind the Pines

Disconnect is a film that has really stayed with me. It has to do with the new ways we communicate; texting, internet, online chats, that connect us to people in seemingly intimate ways yet are so different from real, in-person communication.
The story line also deals with how our behavior directly results in consequences.
Jason Bateman and Hope Davis star. It&rsquo;s not a feel-good film but the message is important especially in this day and age, and might make you think twice about your online activity.

The Place Behind the Pines
Our local star, Bradley Cooper plays a rookie-cop and stars in the second half of the film; Ryan Gosling the first.&nbsp; It&rsquo;s dark - and worth seeing.

For film reviews, I recommend Brian Flieder's blog.

Tonight before the Flyers vs Bruins game at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia, Philly showed a video to honor the city of Boston and what it's been through last week.
See the video here
Everybody was on their feet as the video played showing images of the bombing at the Boston Marathon along with signs like "Keep on Running Boston" and ended with the words BOSTON STRONG.
Philly favorite Lauren Hart sang "God Bless America" before the game and dedicated it to all those affected by the tragic events in Boston.

The National Constitution Center this week announced a new exhibition called "The 1968 Exhibit" that will run June 14 - September 2, 2013. The multi-generational focused multimedia exhibition will feature over 100 artifacts including album covers, concert tickets, posters and autographs from musicians of the era, like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Doors, and more.
The 1968 Exhibit is organized by the Minnesota History Center in association with the Atlanta History Center, the Chicago History Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
As the opening date gets closer, I'll have more details but for now visit the National Constitution Center's website. Tickets go on sale April 3.
Pictured is Erika Von Tiehl, anchor for CBS3, a media partner in the exhibition, and Lauren Saul, Director of Public Relations for NCC. Saul was dressed in sixties attire at the Press Conference March 19.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Wmgk-OriginalProgramming/~4/KQn6Q8e6V2Y" height="1" width="1"/>

Combat Comedy Show: Jim Breuer at xFinity Live: Review

&ldquo;Red White and Breuer&rdquo; was the banner above comedian Jim Breuer as he performed last night at xFinity Live for the WMGK/John DeBella Veteran&rsquo;s benefit show. Combat Comedy Show benefitted the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service and Education Center.
You sold it out! All seats were filled as some 750 listeners bought tickets on the WMGK website for $20 and all the proceeds went to this local veteran&rsquo;s service agency. No tickets were available at the door because it was completely sold out!
At the end of the show, John DeBella presented the service agency with a check for $15,000. If you were in the audience last night, we thank you for your donation. Our listeners are the best!
Jim Breuer is best known for a laugh he has that sounds like a goat, giving him the nickname &ldquo;Goat Boy.&rdquo; He made up a bit using the goat sound where a guy with tourettes syndrome does karaoke for a living singing 80s songs in bars around the country. On SNL, the bit evolved to him hosting the fictional MTV program "Hey, Remember the 80s?"
He was a member of SNL with Will Farrell and Tracy Morgan (1995-98). He impersonated both of them last night, and it was spot on and very funny. Breuer is also known for starring in the film &ldquo;Half Baked&rdquo; with Dave Chappelle.
Breuer brought up the fact that this was a charity performance for veterans but it wasn&rsquo;t just a passing thought. He then launched into a whole 30 minutes of jokes about his father who is a veteran of World War II.&nbsp; It wasn&rsquo;t like he was making fun of him though, and at the end he even gave a statement that no matter what his father might do at the age of 90, there is no reason to be embarrassed because he served in WWII and he will always love him for that. The crowd applauded in kind.
Breuer, 45, lives in Chester Township, NJ with his wife and three daughters. He tours the country now with his stand-up routine and has a radio show on satellite radio. He had a way of talking that was very slow, so it was easy to follow. I also noticed he didn&rsquo;t use any profanity &ndash; not one word &ndash; and that, to me, was refreshing.
Vinnie Brand opened the show but there were sound problems in the venue and it was hard to hear him unless you were sitting right up front. This was unfortunate because he is very funny.
John DeBella has been hosting and supporting comedy acts his entire career here in Philadelphia. He was excited about last night, and said &ldquo;wait until you see the next one!&rdquo;
Stay tuned.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Wmgk-OriginalProgramming/~4/6JABD_hEkSw" height="1" width="1"/>

30 FACTS ABOUT DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

From Pink Floyd's UK website:
&nbsp;

Dark Side has sold approximately 34 million copies worldwide.
The album hit number one on the US charts for one week in 1973. David Gilmour had had a bet with manager Steve O'Rourke that the album wouldn't crack the US top 10.
In the UK the album made it to the number two spot. When it was re-mastered and re-released for the 20th anniversary in 1993 with special packaging it made it to number 4.
In Belgium and France it was No. 1, No. 2 in Austria, No. 3 in Australia, and No. 4 in Holland; it was No. 5 in Spain, Finland and Germany but not at the same time, and made it to No. 8 in Brazil in August 1973.
The album is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being on the charts longer than any other album in history, namely 591 consecutive weeks or 11.4 years in Billboard top 200! A total of approx 14 whole years (741 weeks) in and back in top 200, and a staggering 26 years in some Billboard chart or other.
SoundScan, the chart tabulators in the US, recently listed the top 200 selling albums of the year 2002. Dark Side was again on that list. It sold roughly 417,000 copies in the US last year, making it the 200th top selling album. It is by far the oldest album on the list.
The original title for the album was Eclipse (A Piece for Assorted Lunatics). The band were upset to find out that the progressive folk rock act Medicine Head had released an album with the title of "Dark Side of the Moon" as recently as 1972 on John Peel's Dandelion label. Since the release was less than successful sales-wise, the band decided go ahead with their plans.
The music and lyrics for the entire album were written during a seven week period in which the band were preparing for a tour in which they desperately wanted to premier new material.
Cue Cards with generic questions were written up by Roger and given to roadies, anyone at Abbey Road, doormen, and members of Wings including Paul and Linda McCartney. Approximately 20 questions were asked along the lines of, "Are you afraid of dying?". "When was the last time you were violent and were you in the right?", and "What does the phrase 'The Dark Side of the Moon' mean to you?". The most spontaneous answers to these questions appeared on the album. Paul and Linda didn't make the cut but Wings' guitarist Henry McColluch did providing the "I don't know I was really drunk at the time" response to the question regarding violent behaviour used at the fade out of Money.
The "stoned" laughter used in the background of Speak to Me and Brain Damage is from Peter Watts, a road manager for the Floyd pictured on the back of the Ummagumma sleeve. His daughter, Naomi Watts, is a famous actress that has appeared in several films and was named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People by People Magazine in 2002. Sadly, Peter Watts died of a drug overdose in 1976.
Studio time would be typically interrupted for one of two reasons, either soccer or Monty Python television broadcasts. In fact, Pink Floyd were such Python fans that they used some of the money they made from the initial success of the album to help fund Monty Python's The Holy Grail film.
The album was recorded at Abbey Road on then state of the art 16-track equipment. Roger created the tape loops necessary to achieve the rhythmic chiming of the sound effects for Money. Due to the technology of the time, this meant physically cutting and mending bits of tape together in precise measurements using a ruler and feeding these manually into a tape machine for duplication.
The slide guitar heard on Breathe was a pedal steel that David Gilmour purchased in a pawnshop in Seattle back in 1968.
Alan Parsons recommended Claire Torry for vocal duties on The Great Gig in the Sky. At the time Torry was an EMI staff songwriter who wanted to branch into vocals. Torry was paid double the standard session wage at the time for this particular session since it was on a Sunday. At the time, she was very happy with what she received. No one could foresee the impact and longevity the resulting album would have.
Parsons received a Grammy as the record won the "Best Engineered Album" award.
Australian radio listeners voted the album the best album to have sex to in 1990.
The album marked the first time that Roger Waters wrote all of the lyrics. He has stated that he made a conscious effort to employ words that were very straightforward and easy to understand.
The album was first performed live at the Dome in Brighton, England on the 20th of January 1972. Due to a tape malfunction, the concert only made it as far as 'Money' that evening, but the band continued to perform the suite at almost every show after that date right up until a performance at Knebworth on the 5th of July 1975.
Hipgnosis studio suggested the album be issued as a gatefold with inserts of two posters, one for fans (photos of the band) and one for art (photo of pyramids), and two stickers, day and night, which refer to the touring aspect in the lyrics . All this was to be housed in a card box. EMI agreed to everything except the box. Hipgnosis provided the outer cover design, the prism against black, which referred to the band's inventive use of lights on stage, the triangularity symbolising mad ambition, and the cool graphic in answer to a request from Richard Wright for something less pictorial and more iconic.
The design of the inner spread of the gatefold, featuring the spectrum heartbeat, echoing the audio heartbeat at the beginning of the album, was an idea from Roger Waters.
Us and Them was originally written by Richard Wright in 1969 as an instrumental piano solo intended for use in Michelangelo Antonioni's Zabriskie Point film which the band had been commissioned to score. The piece, then known as The Violent Sequence, was to be used over slow-motion scenes of student / police riots at UCLA. It was rejected for the film and resurrected for Dark Side after Waters penned the lyrics. Tapes exist of the band performing it as The Violent Sequence early in 1970.
The Great Gig in The Sky was originally known as The Mortality Sequence. It featured a similar piano introduction but no female vocals. Instead, taped readings from the Book of Ephesians, a recital of The Lord's Prayer, and a narrative from Malcolm Muggeridge, a controversial host of a religious program on the BBC, were used.
A rough version of Brain Damage was written around the time of Meddle and was actually known as "The Dark Side of the Moon".
The inspiration for Breathe was from a song Roger Waters had written and recorded in 1970 as part of the soundtrack for a film about human biology called "The Body". The opening lyric is the same in both songs. The original song was a protest of man's destruction of nature for profit, a theme that has appeared on more than a few Waters' compositions.
Although the band made a point of not releasing any singles in Great Britain for ten years after 1969's Point Me at The Sky failed to make an impression, two singles from the album were issued in the States. An edited version of Money was issued in May of '73 backed with Any Colour You Like. This peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Top 40. An edited Us and Them backed with Time ("severely" edited with the rotatoms spliced unnaturally onto the end of the song in place of the Breathe reprise) was also issued in February of '74. Despite heavy FM airplay, the track wasn't AM radio friendly enough and the record only made it to 101 on the chart.
The album has been released in various audiophile pressings and limited collector's editions including coloured vinyl editions. Colour completists would need to find a German pressing on white vinyl from 1977, both blue and clear vinyl versions from France also pressed in the late 70's, an Australian pink vinyl version (of the quad mix!) from 1988, and another white one from Holland also from 1977. In addition, there are two official picture discs of the vinyl version still circulating the collector's markets, one from the US on Capitol, and one from the UK only briefly available as part of a box set "The First XI" that was released in 1979 (only 1000 were made available to the public).
EMI organized a launch of the album for the press at the London Planetarium. An interesting choice since at this time the band was trying hard to shed their image as a space-rock band. The quadraphonic mix, supervised by Alan Parsons, was to be used for this reception but instead the band learned that the record would be played back in stereo and through an inferior sound system. Only Richard Wright showed up. Life size cardboard cut-outs of the other band members were used in their absence.
Pink Floyd were excited to be able to develop new material on the road but were horrified to learn of a bootleg album that was released of a complete performance of the piece recorded in February of 1972 at the Rainbow Theatre. The bootleg was issued a mere six weeks after the concert, about a full year prior to an official release. Professionally packaged, the unit reportedly sold in excess of 100,000 copies, many thinking it was the real thing.
Throughout the 1990's rumours persisted that the album was intended to be played back while watching The Wizard of Oz. Many similarities were depicted between the music, lyrics, and the film. The band have denied that the classic film made an impression on them while recording the album, but if you want to judge for yourself be sure to start the CD at the third roar of the MGM lion at the start of the film!
A little known fact about the album is that at the end of Eclipse, just as the final voice states that "there is no dark side of the moon really, as a matter of fact it's all dark", if you listen very closely, perhaps with your headphones on and the volume full blast (preferably with the new 5.1 SACD), you will hear an instrumental, muzak version of Ticket to Ride by the Beatles being played in the background. It was probably being played in the main offices of Abbey Road where the record was recorded and picked up by the microphones, perhaps while conducting the interview with Jerry Driscoll, the doorman at Abbey Road, which led to the response heard.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Wmgk-OriginalProgramming/~4/61vd8B6c4tY" height="1" width="1"/>

The new TV series "Do No Harm" that is based in Philadelphia will premiere on NBC this Thursday, January 31 at 10 pm. The show has been in production since August all over the area, and finishes up the season of shows this Saturday.
Some of the locations you will recognize include Market Street in Center City, Philadelphia City Hall, the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Rittenhouse Square, parts of Northeast Philly, Chestnut Hill train station and the Allentown airport, among others.
Steven Pasquale stars as a neurosurgeon who lives a double life, doing good by day and then destructive things at night. This Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde personality is what drives the story.
In the pilot episode that airs Thursday and is available online now, you'll hear the Stones "Paint it Black."
There hasn't been a TV show based and shot here in Philadelphia since "Hack" (2002-2004). These shows provide work for hundreds of local actors and crew, and brings business to hotels, restaurants, etc. Pennsylvania offers some tax incentives to producers to come here, and does it help that NBC is now owned by Comcast, where the world headquarters are here in Philadelphia?
Other stars include Phylicia Rashad from the Cosby show, and Alana de la Garza formerly of Law and Order (both pictured with Pasquale).

93-year-old C. Everett Koop takes a bride - April 17, 2010

&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Who says you can&rsquo;t fall in love and get married at the age of 93?&nbsp; Not C. Everett Koop, former US Surgeon General.
After being a widower for three years, (his wife of nearly 60 years died in February, 2007), Dr. Koop found love again with Cora Hogue, a staff member of Tenth Presbyterian Church, where he is a member.&nbsp;
Tenth Church at 17th &amp; Spruce was packed to the rafters with members and&nbsp;well-wishers wanting to witness this momentous occasion.&nbsp; Ms. Hogue, who has never been married, wore a lace-filled, long, white bridal gown with two white flowers in her hair.&nbsp; Dr. Koop donned his trademark ceremonial military uniform complete with medals.&nbsp; He still sports a beard with no mustache, as he has for many years.
The ceremony was officiated by the Reverends Phil Ryken and Kenneth Larter.&nbsp; Ruth Naomi Floyd sang a solo called &ldquo;It is well with my Soul.&rdquo;
Although he is most well known to have been surgeon general, (under President Ronald Reagan 1982-89), Dr. Koop spent 35 years in Philadelphia as Surgeon-in-Chief at Children&rsquo;s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).&nbsp; There, he performed ground breaking procedures on conjoined twins and saved the lives of countless children.
The two newlyweds will reside in Dr. Koop&rsquo;s home in New Hampshire.
Here&rsquo;s hoping for a long marriage together. After all, life doesn&rsquo;t end just because you&rsquo;re a nonagenarian. It&rsquo;s the new octogenarian, isn&rsquo;t it?
