width=304 height=171> TfL has said Games Lanes will contribute to increased traffic in some areas of London Journey times on some of London's roads could more than double during the Olympics next year, Transport for London (TfL) has admitted.

The information was in a brief sent to businesses about the Games.

Commuters have been warned of huge delays as an extra 5.3 million visitors are expected in London for the event.

Transport Minister Theresa Villiers said she was confident about the preparations being carried out by TfL to cope with the extra demands.

In an interview with the BBC's Politics Show on Sunday she said: "TfL are focused on keeping London moving during what is going to be the largest event ever hosted in this country.
"It will mean some transport disruption and there will be pressure on the transport system but we will adapt to minimise disruption."

She said businesses were actively engaging with TfL but admitted there was more to do.

A TfL spokesman said: "We have been clear that at certain times and places the transport network will be much busier than usual, which is why we are already working with businesses to ensure they can keep on running and make the most of the great financial opportunities offered by the Games.

"While the transport network will be very busy, we are confident that we will keep London moving while delivering a hugely successful Games."

Commuters have already been warned there could be huge delays to get into large stations such as London Bridge because of the extra pressure on the transport network.

In April a London Assembly report claimed transport problems remained "one of the biggest risks" to the 2012 Olympics.

And in July TfL admitted the "Games Lanes" - dedicated lanes for Olympic athletes and VIPs - would put greater traffic demands on certain parts of the network during the Olympics.

Falling demand and prices of flat-screen TVs have hurt profits at various electronics makers Samsung Electronics has issued a better-than-expected profit forecast for the third quarter as its handset business helped to offset falling demand for TVs and computer chips.

Samsung said it expected an operating profit of 4.2tn won ($3.5bn; ￡2.3bn) a 14% dip from a year earlier, but better than market projections of 3.5tn won.

Compared with the previous quarter, the projected profit is up 12%.

Samsung is the world's second-largest maker of mobile phones.

"Its telecommunications business is seen very positive as shipments of smartphones and other high-end handsets expanded," said Park Jong-Min of ING Investment Management.
Advantage Samsung? Analysts said they expected Samsung's handset business to keep growing robustly, not least due to the Apple's decision to upgrade its existing model of iPhone4 with new features and technology, rather than launch a new version.

Apple had been expected to launch an iPhone5 at a media event held earlier this week.

"Given Apple's relatively unchanged new iPhone, Samsung will have the opportunity to eat into Apple's market share with its hardware build-up and growing software power until next year," said Jang In-Beom of Bookook Securities.

Samsung has also been growing its presence in the tablet PC market.

Last month the Korean electronics manufacturer announced that sales of the Samsung GALAXY S II had crossed the 10 million mark, doubling from five million in just eight weeks.
'Major risk'
Despite the optimism about the growth potential of its handset business, analysts said that external factors remain a big threat to the company in the short to medium-term.

There have been concerns that a slowdown in the US coupled with the ongoing debt crisis in Europe may hurt global growth and dent consumer demand.

"The macroeconomic situation will remain a major risk for Samsung in the fourth quarter," said Ahn Seong-Ho of Hanwha Securities.

At the same time, there are fears that volatility in the currency markets may also have a bearing on its earnings.

The Korean won has fallen as much as 10% against the US dollar since the start of July.

A weaker won makes Korean goods cheaper for foreign buyers.

"The weakening won may have inflated third-quarter profits," said Kim Young-Chan of Shinhan Investment Corp.

However, Mr Kim added the exchange rate remained a threat to Samsung as any recovery in the won would have a counter effect.

<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/int/news/-/news/business-15209644" 6 October 2011 Last updated at 23:01 GMT By Bill Wilson Business reporter, BBC News Qatar now has 11 years to prepare for the 2022 World Cup To say the football world was shocked when Qatar was given the right to host the 2022 football World Cup would be an understatement.

Critics, and many still remain, wondered how such a massive event could be held in a country with a total population less than Greater Manchester's, and where the summer temperature can reach 50C.

However, the man at the helm of organising the tournament insists criticism is misplaced and that the Middle Eastern Emirate will be able to stage a memorable tournament 11 years from now.

Hassan al-Thawadi, the secretary-general of the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, is looking to provide a World Cup memorable for all the right reasons.

Mr al-Thawadi said that two billion people were within a four-hour flight of Qatar, and that the World Cup would "build bridges of understanding between the Middle East and rest of the world".

And some bridges need to be built.

He said that since Fifa had awarded it the tournament, the emirate had faced an "avalanche of accusations and allegations" relating to claims it had bribed its way to securing the World Cup.

Mr al-Thawadi said Qatar had in fact conducted its bid campaign "to the highest ethical and moral standards".
'Promises'
Now he wants to focus on leaving a "bold legacy" from hosting a World Cup which some analysts estimate could cost as much as ￡138bn to bring about.

Qatar hopes to leave a legacy in the areas of football development, air-cooling technology, building modular stadiums (which can be downsized after the event), and fan experience.
New stadiums will be built and existing ones will have their capacity extended
"We can deliver... and fulfil the promises we made to the world," Mr al-Thawadi told delegates at the Leaders in Football conference in London.

He said Qatar has been drawing inspiration about how to host a successful event from a number of sources, including London 2012.

The small nation, population 1.7 million, is now looking to appoint a project management company by the end of the year - "a crucial appointment which we must get right".

It is also looking to draw up a "master schedule" for stadiums and infrastructure, in order to resolve any potential pitfalls on the road to 2022 as soon as possible.

There will be 12 stadiums in use at the World Cup, and it is hoped the first new one with air-cooling technology with will be in place by 2015.
Cooling
In addition, Mr al-Thawadi said the 2022 World Cup would benefit from a "state-of-the-art transport infrastructure" which needed to be largely constructed from scratch.
The official said that the small size of the emirate meant fans would be able to stay in the same hotel for the duration of the tournament, and also to travel easily and take in two games in one day at different venues.

One on the thorny question of temperature, the country says it is also developing air-cooling techniques.

"Technology is already being trialled in open spaces in Qatar," says Mr Al al-Thawadi.

There has been talk of moving the World Cup to the winter, but this notion has been scotched my many, including the German football federation.

"We submitted a bid that looks towards hosting a summer World Cup - we are moving towards that," says the 2022 supremo.

He said it was up to the global football community to come to any unanimous decision if that situation was ever to be changed.

Meanwhile, nine of the stadiums being used will be modular, and Qatar will donate 170,000 seats to developing countries after the World Cup, when stadiums are slimmed down.

That he said, meant the country would not be lumbered with any large "white elephant" rarely full stadiums after 2022.
Alcohol
For potential visiting fans, Mr al-Thawadi wanted to quell fears that there would be nothing for them to do after matches.
We are confident and excited that this will leave a legacy of understanding, and that people can unite through a shared love of football”

End Quote Hassan al-Thawadi Qatar 2022 "There is significant investment in tourism in Qatar, museums and entertainment sites, and a service industry dedicated towards fans," he says.

"We have always said alcohol would be available. It might not be as available as it is in London, but any fan that wants to enjoy a drink can do so."

He said the Qatar public would also be prepared for the influx of fans and, for example, their different dress sense.

In addition, he said Qatar was host to many different communities, including English people, and was "used to being hospitable".

He added: "We have hosted major events over the years" - including the 2006 Asian Games.
Catalyst
The country has also applied to host the 2017 World Athletics Championship - in competition with London - and also the 2020 Olympics.

"The Olympic Games bid is not a distraction to 2022, and may be an opportunity for some synergies with the World Cup."
<IMG alt="Qatar's Mohammed el-Sayed (white kit) fights for the ball with Bahrain's Mohammed Hussain " $2.7tn)Strengthening big European banks that could be hit by any defaults on national debt obligations.
However, on Monday evening AFP reported that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had told television news channel NTV that there was no plan to boost the size of the EFSF.

"We are giving it the tools so it can work if necessary," Mr Schaeuble was reported as saying.

"Then we will use it effectively but we do not have the intention of boosting its volume."
Pan-Europe gains
Uncertainty over how to tackle Greece's problems has led to some European bank shares losing half their value in recent months due to concerns about their holdings of Greek debt.

But on Monday, French banks, which are particularly exposed to Greece, rallied, with BNP Paribas and Societe Generale up 4% and 5.4% respectively, and Credit Agricole up 3.7%.
Unless the banks are fixed, there will remain too big a risk that a financial crisis could turn the current global economic slowdown into something more akin to depression than recession”

End Quote <IMG alt="image of Robert Peston" Allianz was up 10%, Deutsche Bank 8% and Commerzbank 7.7%. In the UK, Barclays rose 6.8% and RBS 3.3%.

The Frankfurt was up about 3% at close, and in Paris by about 2%. The UK's main index, the FTSE 100, was virtually unchanged.

US shares closed higher, with the Dow ahead by 2.5%, the S&P 500 by 2.3%, and the Nasdaq by 1.4%.

However, commodity prices were lower on remaining concerns that the eurozone crisis could affect the global economy.

Philip Tyson of brokerage MF Global told the BBC that the proposed bailout fund had to be at least 2tn euros.

He said: "Markets need confidence that the fund has the firepower to deal with the likes of Italy and Spain should contagion risks spread.

"It does need to happen, but there are big question marks about the detail, and exactly how it will happen. Time is running out."

Ben Critchley, a sales trader at spread betting group IG Index, said: "For now at least, it looks as if markets are giving some credence to a firm plan on how to tackle the debt crisis beginning to emerge.

"But if recent experience is anything to go by, this patience is unlikely to last too long if details are not forthcoming."
Key elements
The reports about the rescue proposals emerged from the annual meeting of the IMF in the US capital last week, attended by finance ministers from the G20 group of countries.

The package is expected to involve a quadrupling - from the current projected level of 440bn euros - in the firepower of the eurozone's main bailout fund, the EFSF.
The problem, they said privately, was that ministers couldn't talk openly about a new solution to the crisis when the old one had not even been passed by national parliaments. Copper, which has already fallen, was down another 4%.

Senior commodities analysts Edward Meir, at brokers MF Global, said: "These are very critical days and weeks ahead, reminiscent very much of the touch-and-go situation we were in back in 2008.

"The key difference this time around is that it is countries and not companies that are in danger of going bust." By contrast, Microsoft's value has dropped 8.8% over the same time period.

Analysts put the switch in the number two slot down to a decision IBM made in 2005 to sell off its PC business to Chinese manufacturer Lenovo to concentrate on software and services.

"IBM went beyond technology," Ted Schadler, a Forrester Research analyst told Bloomberg. "They were early to recognise that computing was moving way beyond these boxes on our desks."

By contrast much of Microsoft's revenue comes from sales of Windows and Office software used on PCs. Also, Microsoft is between releases of Windows which can mean a fallow period for its revenues.

Windows 7 was released in 2009 and Windows 8 is not expected to be released until late 2012 at the earliest.

Many have also claimed that the rise of the web, mobile computing and tablets spells the end of the PC era. In early August, Dr Mark Dean, one of the designers of the original IBM PC, declared that the centre of the computing world had shifted away from the humble desktop.

View the original article here

Apple unveils refreshed iPhone 4S

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
4 October 2011 Last updated at 23:38 GMT Rory Cellan-Jones looks at Apple's new iPhone 4S
Apple has unveiled the latest iteration in its iPhone range, but there was no sign of the widely rumoured iPhone 5.

The iPhone 4S, as the model will be known, boasts an improved camera and significantly extended battery life.

It will run the latest iOS5 operating system, which is set for release on 12 October.

The event was the first major announcement for new boss Tim Cook who took over from Steve Jobs in August.

The iPhone 4S, which will go on sale on 14 October, will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models - in both black and white.

It has the same look and feel as the existing iPhone 4 which was launched 15 months ago.

However, Apple said that updates to iOS meant the phone would boast some "200 new features".
Continue reading the main story Shares in Apple fell by almost 5% within minutes of the eagerly anticipated launch, with analysts saying that investors and Apple fans had expected the latest version to be a more radical improvement over its predecessor.

However, the company's shares later regained most of their losses to close down just 0.6%, albeit underperforming the NASDAQ index as a whole.
Voice control
Among the additions is an "intelligent assistant" that allows users to ask questions aloud and receive detailed answers back.

Siri, which began life as a third-party app, was purchased by Apple in 2010 but has yet to appear within its software.

Luke Peters, editor of gadget magazine T3, said that the software announcements would do just enough to keep Apple fans interested in the face of strong challenges from rival smartphone manufacturers.
You could sense a great wave of disappointment rolling through the Apple community.

Why rush out and buy the new, new thing if it looks just like that old phone that's been around for more than a year?
"Some people were looking for a brand new phone and they haven't got that today, so some will be disappointed," he told BBC News.

"But with the update to iOS5 and Siri that could be enough to sway people to make the investment."
Disappointment
Other industry watchers were less charitable about the iPhone refresh, and the non-appearance of the iPhone 5.

Gareth Beavis, phones editor at TechRadar said that the new hardware would leave many people underwhelmed.

"It was quite disappointing. I think there is going to be a lot of anger from users expecting something big bold and quite exciting after a long time of waiting from the iPhone 4.

"People will buy this in their droves, but Apple has missed a trick by just releasing the exact same phone again with marginally upgraded specs."
Details of the new phone were unveiled by Apple's Philip Schiller

For Apple's new chief executive, the event was as much about making a statement about his leadership as it was new products.

Tim Cook had previously acted as interim boss, looking after the company while Steve Jobs was on sick leave.

Unlike his charismatic predecessor, Mr Cook left the biggest announcement of Tuesday's event to a colleague - marketing boss Phil Schiller.

"Maybe he wants to bring other people to the forefront by letting others speak on his behalf," said Gregory Roekens, chief technology officer at PR firm Wunderman.

"But in terms of style, it was underwhelming. People were expecting iPhone 5, but instead it's almost fixing the weaknesses the previous phones had.

"It will be interesting to see how people react to that."

<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/int/news/-/news/technology-15172238" during the summer holiday season, but that its full-year profits should be "broadly in line with market expectations".

In a trading statement, the travel company also said it was continuing to be affected by the political turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa.

It said this had particularly affected its French business.

However, its sales in northern Europe, including Germany, were up strongly.

Its summer bookings for this region - which also includes the Scandinavian countries - were 13% higher than a year earlier.

Bookings in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Eastern Europe were down 1% from a year ago; and there was no change in the UK.
Boss departure
Thomas Cook's forward bookings for the 2011-12 winter season are currently mixed when compared with the same time last year.

They are down 7% in the UK, and 16% lower in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Eastern Europe, but up 6% in Germany and Scandinavia.

Thomas Cook said it was continuing efforts to boost its profitability.

The company also said it would not be making any dividend payments. The Greek austerity measures are hugely unpopular and have led to a wave of strikes and protests Greece has said its budget deficit will be cut in 2011 and 2012 but will still miss targets set by the EU and IMF.

The 2011 deficit is projected to be 8.5% of GDP, down from 10.5% in 2010 but short of the 7.6% target.

The government, which on Sunday adopted its 2012 draft budget, blamed the shortfall on deepening recession.

The figures come as inspectors from the IMF, EU and European Central Bank are in Athens to decide whether Greece should get a key bail-out instalment.

Greece needs the 8bn euros (￡6.9bn; $10.9bn) instalment to avoid going bankrupt next month.

Bankruptcy would put severe pressure on the eurozone, damage European bank finances and possibly have a serious knock-on effect on the world economy.
'Unanimously approved'
The Greek finance ministry said on Sunday that its unpopular austerity measures would have to be adhered to even if the latest targets were to be met.

It said: "Three critical months remain to finish 2011, and the final estimate of 8.5% of GDP deficit can be achieved if the state mechanism and citizens respond accordingly."

It released figures for 2012's projected deficit, putting it at 6.8% of GDP, also short of the 6.5% target.

The figures came as the government met to approve Greece's draft budget for next year.

It blamed an economic contraction this year of 5.5% - rather than May's 3.8% estimate - for the failure to meet deficit targets.

The cabinet meeting also approved a measure to put 30,000 civil service staff on "labour reserve" by the end of the year.

This places them on partial pay with possible dismissal after a year.

"The labour reserve measure was approved unanimously," one deputy minister told Reuters.

This measure, along with other wage cuts and tax rises, have been part of a package intended to persuade the so called "troika" Levels above 50 imply growth.

But the survey's employment sub-index dropped to 48.7, indicating job losses for the first time in 12 months.

However, separate data suggested the US private sector was still adding jobs.

The ADP jobs report, which is compiled each month by a major US outsourcing firm, registered 91,000 new private sector jobs across the US economy as a whole in September, somewhat ahead of market expectations.

The bulk of those new jobs, according to the report, were in the service sector - which accounts for about 80% of all jobs in the US.

The clear discrepancy with the non-manufacturing sector survey conducted by the Institute of Supply Management may point to a jump in government-sector job losses, which would be included in the ISM index, but not in the ADP report.

"The most significant thing is the employment index which fell," said Anthony Nieves, chair of the ISM's survey committee.

"This is a very tell-tale sign for non-manufacturing, given how labor intensive this sector is. The drop in the employment index reflects the prevailing sentiment in the business community which is one of caution, hesitation and uncertainty."

Meanwhile a third report, by consultancy Challenger, Gray and Christmas, calculated that nearly 116,000 job cuts were announced last month - the highest rate since April 2009 - thanks largely to layoffs by Bank of America and the US military.

Official US jobs data for September is due to be released on Friday by the US Department of Labor, and is expected to show an increase of 60,000 jobs for the US economy as a whole.

View the original article here

New Sunderland position for Quinn

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Quinn will focus on Sunderland's business interests overseas Niall Quinn is leaving his role as chairman at Sunderland to take charge of "international development".

Owner Ellis Short will take over as chairman while Quinn focuses on the club's business interests overseas.

Discussing Short, Quinn said: "He'll be a fantastic chairman and taking this role on speaks volumes about his ambition for the club."

Short said: "I can assure our fans that it's the same group of people continuing to lead the club."
It's out of the blue. 15.6m euros) and jailed its former Seoul chief for stock price-fixing.

The decision by the Seoul High Court overturned a 2008 acquittal in the long-running case.

It had temporarily halted Lone Star's efforts to sell its 51% stake in Korea Exchange Bank (KEB).

Lone Star bought the stake in KEB for $1.2 billion in 2003 and later merged it with KEB's credit card business.
Spread rumours
It was alleged Paul Yoo, who ran the firm's South Korean division, deliberately spread rumours that KEB Credit Services might reduce its capital and issue new shares, to reduce the price of a merger.

Yoo has been jailed for three years.

Lone Star has reached an agreement to sell its KEB stake to Hana Financial Group in a deal originally assessed to be worth $4bn. But the deal was put on hold awaiting the outcome of the court ruling.

The conviction, according to Seoul's Financial Services Commission, said Lone Star was likely to be judged unfit to be the majority owner of KEB.

The court case had thwarted Lone Star's attempt to sell KEB to Kookmin Bank in 2006 and to HSBC Holdings in 2008.

Public discord and the US buyout firm's legal woes have dissuaded foreign investors from acquiring Korean companies, said Henry Seggerman, president of New York-based International Investment Advisers.

View the original article here

Increase in UK mortgage approvals

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
29 September 2011 Last updated at 09:29 GMT The figures suggest a pick up in sales may lie ahead The number of new mortgages approved, but not yet lent, for home buyers in August rose to its highest level since December 2009.

The Bank of England said 52,410 mortgages were approved last month.

That was nearly three thousand more than in July, and the highest number since December 2009.

The figures suggest that a recent slight relaxation in lending criteria by banks and other lenders will lead to higher sales in the coming months.

Adrian Coles, director-general of the Building Societies Association, said: "Approval figures continue to look promising as consumers take advantage of the competitive mortgage rates."

"However, the outlook for the economy has deteriorated over the past month as has consumer confidence, which could well spill into the housing market, causing further weakness," he warned.
Lending squeeze Continue reading the main story
We are telling people to be realistic. The future of Wrexham Football Club finally agreed The Greene King brewery and pub chain has ended its sponsorship deal with Wrexham Football Club.

The announcement came two days after Wrexham Supporters' Trust (WST) agreed a deal to take over the club.

Wrexham said the two-year sponsorship deal, agreed last April, was ending because the Racecourse ground is now owned by Glyndwr University, which has its own beer sale deal.

Greene King said an amicable agreement had been reached.

After months of negotiations, WST and the club agreed a takeover deal on Monday.

On Wednesday, outgoing club chief executive, Jon Harris, said Wrexham FC could no longer honour its agreement with Greene King because ownership of the Racecourse had been transferred to Glyndwr University, which has a beer sales deal with another company.
It's been a tough eight months because of the nature of what we have been trying to do here”

End Quote Jon Harris Wrexham FC chief executive A Greene King spokesperson said: "We originally agreed a sponsorship deal with Wrexham FC in good faith which included providing beer for the club and both stand and shirt sponsorship.

"We have met with the club to discuss how the sale of the ground has impacted on our sponsorship deal.

"It has transpired that the new owners have been left in a position where they don't have the ability to meet our original agreement as the right to sell Greene King beer was not transferred from the ground to the new owners as part of the sale.

"As a result we have reached an amicable agreement to end our sponsorship with immediate effect so the new owners are free to find new sponsors. We wish Wrexham FC and its loyal fans the very best of luck for the future."

A club spokesman expressed sadness at the end of the partnership as Greene King was a "fantastic sponsor" but it gave the new owners the chance to seek a new shirt sponsor.

Jon Harris said he expects to leave his job as caretaker managing director at the end of the week.

The former Shrewsbury Town general manager arrived at the Racecourse in January and took on the role of chief executive in May after failing with his own bid to buy the club.

He said the supporters' trust had made it clear they had their own people to run the club.

"It's been a tough eight months because of the nature of what we have been trying to do here.

"But it's a magnificent club with great potential and supporters who are second to none.

"I wish the trust well and now I'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for me. I have had a great time here and I think the majority of people have appreciated what I have tried to do."

View the original article here

VIDEO: Sri Lanka tea hit by bad weather

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
4 October 2011 Last updated at 02:40 GMT Help

View the original article here

Dhallywood's fight for survival

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
5 October 2011 Last updated at 17:37 GMT By Anbarasan Ethirajan BBC News, Dhaka Sixty local films were made last year in Bangladesh The Bangladeshi film industry, known as Dhallywood, is about to face serious competition.

Ever since its independence from Pakistan in 1971, local cinema halls have been banned from showing Indian films.

It was an attempt to protect the local film-making industry which is worth $20m (￡12.9m).

But in the coming days, cinema halls here will show three Indian Bengali movies and nine more Hindi movies from Bollywood will be screened later.

Even though the move is not permanent, it has angered film-makers, producers and actors and has caused a fight between them and the theatre owners.

"Bollywood is a big institution. Their production cost is 100 times more than our production cost. How can we compete with them?" asks Masud Parvez Sohel Rana, a well-known Bangladeshi actor and director.

"It seems to me like you are asking a flyweight boxer to fight with a heavyweight boxer," he adds.

He says even the one-off screening of Indian movies will put more pressure on the government to lift the ban permanently, and if it happens, the home-grown movie industry will vanish in no time.

Film industry leaders also warn that more than 100,000 people are dependent on the industry and their jobs could be in danger.
Huge losses
However, cinema hall owners argue that they are losing revenue because of the ban.
Bangladeshi cinema owners are keen to show Bollywood movies
It is also because of the falling number of films produced locally.

About a decade ago, Bangladesh produced about 100 movies a year.

But last year, the number dropped to about 60 and it is expected to go down further this year.

"We are not getting enough movies to screen in our cinema halls," says Iftekharuddin Naushad, who owns Madhumita cinema hall in the capital Dhaka.

"As a result, many halls have either been shut down or converted into malls."
In recent years, the number of cinema halls in Bangladesh has reduced from about 1,500 to just over 600.

Many say the business is not sustainable under present circumstances and satellite television channels have been drawing away viewers.

"Our cinema halls are running with one fourth of their capacity and we are incurring huge losses," says Ahasanullah Moni, who owns Razmoni cinema hall.

The Bangladesh Motion Pictures Exhibitors Association has been urging the government to allow Bollywood movies to be screened in local cinemas to inject new life into the business.

"We are not asking to open the floodgate by importing hundreds of films. We want to screen a certain number of good Indian movies, Bollywood films, so that we can have some healthy competition," says Mr Naushad.
Joint production
Some film critics argue that importing Bollywood movies will also have benefits by forcing Dhallywood to improve its standards.

They say the poor scripting, production and technique of Bangladeshi films are driving away viewers from cinema halls.

Bollywood movies are already shown on satellite television channels in Bangladesh.

Pirated DVDs of these films are freely available across the country with Bollywood stars like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai are more popular than local actors.
Film Meherjaan include cast and crew from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan
"Without bringing Indian films to the local market, there is no way to revitalise the industry. Actually there is no industry here," says young Bangladeshi director Rubaiyat Hossain.

To overcome the present crisis, Ms Hossain proposes more Indo-Bangla joint production.

Her critically acclaimed film Meherjaan, included cast and crew from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

"I don't think I could have brought my film to the present technical level, if I hadn't worked with Indian technicians," says Ms Hossain.

"I have learnt a lot by working with them and we do not have that kind of post-production facilities here in Bangladesh," she adds.

In an age of satellite channels, internet and cell phones, the demand for good and well-made movies is increasing.

So it seems Bangladeshi films cannot avoid competition for very much longer.

View the original article here
