Tide Thefts, Cargo Hijacking And Cattle Rustling: Why Is An Epidemic Of Thievery Sweeping America?

Desperate people do desperate things, and it appears that Americans are rapidly becoming a lot more desperate. An epidemic of thievery is sweeping across America, and authorities are not quite sure what to make of it. Down in Texas, cattle thieves can get up to $1,500 per head of cattle, and cattle rustling was up nearly 40 percent last year.

As you will read about below, cargo hijacking is becoming much more sophisticated, and it is being estimated that losses from cargo thefts will total about $216 million this year alone. And for some reason, Tide laundry detergent has become a very hot commodity among common criminals all across America. In fact, it is being reported that some grocery stores are “losing $10,000 to $15,000 a month” as a result of Tide thefts. So why is all of this happening? Well, as I have written about previously, crime is on the rise in the United States, and poverty is absolutely exploding. In fact, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, 49.2 percent of all Americans are receiving benefits from at least one government program each month. Over the past five years, we have seen an unprecedented rise in the number of people that cannot take care of themselves without help from the government. Millions upon millions of Americans that have been forced into poverty are becoming increasingly angry, frustrated and desperate. And what we are watching right now is only just the beginning – all of this is going to get a whole lot worse.
When people think of the “social decay” that is happening to America, most of the time Texas and Oklahoma would not be the first places that come to mind. But according to NPR, there was nearly a 40 percent rise in the theft of cows and horses down in that area of the country last year…

Ranchers saw a sharp jump in cattle rustling last year in Texas and Oklahoma. Over 10,000 cows and horses were reported missing or stolen. That’s an almost 40 percent increase from the year before. It’s a trend that’s surprised some in law enforcement.

And this is happening even though the penalties for cattle rustling have gotten much stronger…

Penalties against rustlers were toughened by Texas lawmakers in 2009. Now, the crime could put you in prison for up to 10 years. But ironically more and more cattle have gone missing or stolen since that law was passed.

Another trend that is baffling law enforcement authorities is the huge wave of cargo hijackings that they have been seeing. According to a recent CBS News article, cargo thefts are becoming a lot more elaborate these days…

To steal huge shipments of valuable cargo, thieves are turning to a deceptively simple tactic: They pose as truckers, load the freight onto their own tractor-trailers and drive away with it.
It’s an increasingly common form of commercial identity theft that has allowed con men to make off each year with millions of dollars in merchandise, often food and beverages. And experts say the practice is growing so rapidly that it will soon become the most common way to steal freight.

You may not think that stealing truckloads of walnuts or cheese is a big deal, but the truth is that the dollar values of some of these thefts are absolutely staggering…

News reports from across the country recount just a few of the thefts: 80,000 pounds of walnuts worth $300,000 in California, $200,000 of Muenster cheese in Wisconsin, rib-eye steaks valued at $82,000 inTexas, $25,000 pounds of king crab worth $400,000 in California.

And this is not just happening in a few isolated locations. We are literally seeing an epidemic of cargo theft that stretches from coast to coast…

Although cargo thieves prey on companies across the nation, the hot spots are places with shipping ports or rail hubs. California leads the nation. Large numbers of thefts have also been reported in Texas, Florida, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Perhaps most fascinating of all is the wave of Tide thefts that is sweeping the nation. The following is an excerpt from a New York Magazine article from earlier this year…

The call that came in from a local Safeway one day in March 2011 was unlike any the Organized Retail Crime Unit of the Prince George’s County Police Department had fielded before. The grocery store, located in suburban Bowie, Maryland, had been robbed repeatedly. But in every incident the only products taken were bottles—many, many bottles—of the liquid laundry detergent Tide. “They were losing $10,000 to $15,000 a month, with people just taking it off the shelves,” recalls Sergeant Aubrey Thompson, who heads the team. When Thompson and his officers arrived to investigate, they stumbled onto another apparent Tide theft in progress and busted two men who’d piled 100 or so of the bright-orange jugs into their Honda. The next day, Thompson returned to the store’s parking lot to tape a television interview about the crimes. A different robber took advantage of the distraction to make off with twenty more bottles.

So why are criminals so interested in Tide detergent?
Well, apparently it is heavily used as currency in the drug trade…

Southern California authorities say it’s a dirty business and a bizarre trend – drug users trading Tide detergent for crack.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says it’s a nationwide problem – people are stealing the popular but expensive detergent and trading it for marijuana and crack cocaine.
San Bernardino police Sgt. Travis Walker says detectives raiding dope houses in recent years were puzzled when they found lots of Tide. Turns out it wasn’t being used to make drugs but to buy them.

We live at a time when an increasing number of Americans will do just about anything for money.
Down in Florida, one mother was so desperate for money that she was actually prostituting her three teenage daughters. Two of them were under the age of 18…

A St. Cloud mother was picked up Thursday on charges of serving as her three teenage daughters’ madam in a West U.S. Highway 192 prostitution ring, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
At 2:30 p.m., Paula Howard flagged down an undercover detective acting as a “John” in front of a bus stop and arranged for him to have sex with one of her girls, ages 16, 17, and 18, an arrest record states.
The daughter agreed to perform the act for $20 and hopped into the car, telling the detective, “Oh yea. That’s my family, but don’t even worry about it. They know what I do,” the report states.

But haven’t you heard?
Everything is just fine in America. Barack Obama and the mainstream media keep telling us that over and over, so it must be true.
Right?
I think that we got a glimpse into the true condition of America last month when a “technical glitch” caused the system that processes food stamp card payments to malfunction for a couple of hours. A Time Magazine article described what happened at one Wal-Mart in Louisiana…

Customers cleared shelves and police were called in to control crowds taking advantage of suddenly unlimited spending allowed on their Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, which are issued to recipients of government food stamps. Spending limits on the cards were reportedly disabled for about two hours.
When a store in Springhill, La., announced over the loudspeaker that the glitch was fixed, shoppers simply abandoned loaded carts, according to Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd.

And similar “mini-riots” happened in a bunch of other locations as well.
For example, customers at one Wal-Mart in Mississippi just started taking groceries out of the store that they hadn’t paid for when their food stamp cards were not accepted…

Customers staged a disturbance then walked out of a Mississippi Walmart store with groceries that hadn’t been paid for Saturday night after a computer glitch left them unable to use their food stamp cards.
People in 17 states found themselves unable to buy groceries with their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program cards after a routine check by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a temporary system failure.
Shortly after the mini-riot, managers decided to temporarily close the store, citing customer safety.

Keep in mind that all of this was caused by a “technical glitch” that only lasted for a few hours.
What would happen if there was a problem that lasted for much longer?
That is a sobering thing to think about.
And as I wrote about recently, all 47 million Americans on food stamps just had their benefits reduced on November 1st. This is causing food banks all across the country to brace for a huge influx of needy people…

Food banks across the country, stretched thin in the aftermath of the recession, are bracing for more people coming through their doors in the wake of cuts to the federal food stamp program.
Food stamp benefits to 47 million Americans were cut starting Friday as a temporary boost to the federal program comes to an end without new funding from a deadlocked Congress.
Under the program, known formally as the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program, or SNAP, a family of four that gets $668 per month in benefits will find that amount cut by $36.

In fact, the president of the Food Bank for New York City says that members of her organization “are panicking”…

As president of the Food Bank for New York City, Margaret Purvis expects those cuts will draw even more people to organizations that already provide 400,000 meals a day to hungry city folks.
“Our members are panicking,” she said as time wound down before the benefit decreases go into effect. “We’re telling everyone to make sure that you are prepared for longer lines.”

Purvis also told Salon.com that “when people cannot afford to eat food” it has the potential to start “riots”…

“If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon Monday. Purvis said that the looming cut would mean about 76 million meals “that will no longer be on the plates of the poorest families” in NYC alone – a figure that outstrips the total number of meals distributed each year by the Food Bank for New York City, the largest food bank in the country. “There will be an immediate impact,” she said.

So will we see riots as a result of these food stamp cuts?
No, I do not believe that we will see riots yet.
But the volcano of anger, frustration and desperation that is simmering just below the surface of this country continues to get hotter.
Someday it will explode.

Armed citizen ends carnage

A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store.

Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people."

Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. "There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms."

Then, before the suspect could find another victim - a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. "A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith's grabbed him."

By the time officers arrived the suspect had been subdued by employees and shoppers. Police had high praise for gun carrying man who ended the hysteria. Lt. Brian Purvis said, "This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time."

Dozens of other shoppers, who too could have become victims, are also thankful for the gun carrying man. And many, like Danylle Julian, are still in shock from the experience. "Scary actually. Really scary. Five minutes before I walk out to my car. It could have been me."

Police say right now they have no idea what caused the suspect to go on the dangerous rampage. (We will update as soon as we learn new information.)

So far, police have not released the names of the suspect, the victims or the man who pulled the gun.

Russian Airlines Develop a Super Sniffing Dog Breed!

There cannot be too many airlines in the world which dabble in dog breeding. Well, the Russian Aeroflot Airlines has its very own dog breeding centre, and a new dog breed has been developed by them for the sole purpose of having a drug and bomb-sniffing hound at the Moscow Airport.

So what is this new breed like? They are a unique breed - a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Turkmen Jackal. Before you lift your eyebrows in shock, it is worth mentioning that this rather unique combination took 27 years to perfect and the result is amazing! The Russian Aeroflot claims it has managed to produce the world's greatest sniffer dog, by combining the genes of a Husky with a Jackal. Their breeders claim that they are much more effective than the Labradors or German Shepherds that are more commonly used in the West.

At first sight, they look much like a normal Husky, although they are a bit smaller and have a Jackal's thick black whiskers. The Husky and Turkmen Jackal were picked for the breeding project because of their extremely keen noses. The former has evolved to sniff out the faintest odors in Arctic conditions when the deep cold suppresses smells, while the jackal has a nose more sensitive than its cousin, the domestic dog. Siberian Huskies are known for their obedience, while pure Jackals make poor working dogs. They are too afraid of people and are hard to train and domesticate. They hail from the warmer climates of central Asia and suffer in the Russian winter.

According to Aeroflot’s chief dog breeder, Klim Sulimov: “The best thing about these dogs is their sense of smell. They can sniff out certain explosives which ordinary machines can't trace. And they're much cheaper. My dogs combine the qualities of Arctic reindeer herding dogs, which can work in temperatures as low as -70C, and Jackals which enjoy the heat up to +40C. They're perfect for our country”.

Aeroflot says breeding super sniffer dogs has become a necessity. The rise of terrorism made all airlines look more tightly at security issues. Aeroflot, however, believes the dogs will eventually pay their way and is even planning to market them worldwide. There is already a great interest from other airlines for this new breed. Each of the dogs is worth about $5,000. So far, 40 of the dogs have been bred. Thirty are working at Moscow's Sheremetyevo-2 international airport. A name for the new breed has yet to be chosen, although Huscal and Jacky have, apparently, been ruled out.

It may be unusual for an airline to breed its own sniffer dogs, but with Russia fearing attacks from Chechen militants and al-Qaeda, anything which helps passengers feel safer in the air must be worth the expense..

Americans never give up your guns

These days, there are few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bear arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions.

This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items. People carried them concealed, they carried them holstered. Fighting knives were a prominent part of many traditional attires and those little tubes criss crossing on the costumes of Cossacks and various Caucasian peoples? Well those are bullet holders for rifles.

Various armies, such as the Poles, during the Смута (Times of Troubles), or Napoleon, or the Germans even as the Tsarist state collapsed under the weight of WW1 and Wall Street monies, found that holding Russian lands was much much harder than taking them and taking was no easy walk in the park but a blood bath all its own. In holding, one faced an extremely well armed and aggressive population Hell bent on exterminating or driving out the aggressor.

This well armed population was what allowed the various White factions to rise up, no matter how disorganized politically and militarily they were in 1918 and wage a savage civil war against the Reds. It should be noted that many of these armies were armed peasants, villagers, farmers and merchants, protecting their own. If it had not been for Washington's clandestine support of and for the Reds, history would have gone quite differently.

Moscow fell, for example, not from a lack of weapons to defend it, but from the lying guile of the Reds. Ten thousand Reds took Moscow and were opposed only by some few hundreds of officer cadets and their instructors. Even then the battle was fierce and losses high. However, in the city alone, at that time, lived over 30,000 military officers (both active and retired), all with their own issued weapons and ammunition, plus tens of thousands of other citizens who were armed. The Soviets promised to leave them all alone if they did not intervene. They did not and for that were asked afterwards to come register themselves and their weapons: where they were promptly shot.

Of course being savages, murderers and liars does not mean being stupid and the Reds learned from their Civil War experience. One of the first things they did was to disarm the population. From that point, mass repression, mass arrests, mass deportations, mass murder, mass starvation were all a safe game for the powers that were. The worst they had to fear was a pitchfork in the guts or a knife in the back or the occasional hunting rifle. Not much for soldiers.

To this day, with the Soviet Union now dead 21 years, with a whole generation born and raised to adulthood without the SU, we are still denied our basic and traditional rights to self defense. Why? We are told that everyone would just start shooting each other and crime would be everywhere....but criminals are still armed and still murdering and too often, especially in the far regions, those criminals wear the uniforms of the police. The fact that everyone would start shooting is also laughable when statistics are examined.

While President Putin pushes through reforms, the local authorities, especially in our vast hinterland, do not feel they need to act like they work for the people. They do as they please, a tyrannical class who knows they have absolutely nothing to fear from a relatively unarmed population. This in turn breeds not respect but absolute contempt and often enough, criminal abuse.

For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US 2nd Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room. Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but are in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position. In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike. They throw acid (Pakistan, UK), they throw fire bombs (France), they attack. What is worse, is, that the best way to stop a maniac is not psychology or jail or "talking to them", it is a bullet in the head, that is why they are a maniac, because they are incapable of living in reality or stopping themselves.

The excuse that people will start shooting each other is also plain and silly. So it is our politicians saying that our society is full of incapable adolescents who can never be trusted? Then, please explain how we can trust them or the police, who themselves grew up and came from the same culture?

No it is about power and a total power over the people. There is a lot of desire to bad mouth the Tsar, particularly by the Communists, who claim he was a tyrant, and yet under him we were armed and under the progressives disarmed. Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step of their ideology. Do you think that is an alarmist headline? Well, I am not the one saying this. Law enforcement authorities all over the country are telling citizens that they can no longer deal with all the crime and that people need to lock their doors and prepare to defend their families. Just recently, the city attorney of San Bernardino, California told citizens to “lock their doors and load their guns” because there is not enough money to pay for adequate police protection any longer. The murder rate in San Bernardino is up 50 percent this year, but the city is dealing with bankruptcy and has been forced to lay off 80 police officers. But San Bernardino is not the only city dealing with this kind of a thing. In Oakland, burglaries are up 43 percent so far this year, and to say that there is a “crime wave” going on in Oakland would be a massive understatement. If you can believe it, in Oakland “more than 11,000 homes, cars or businesses have been broken into so far this year – translating to about 33 burglaries a day.” Sadly, there simply are not enough police to keep up with it all. Due to budget cuts, it is being projected that by February the size of the police force in Oakland will be about 25 percent smaller than it was back in 2008. But what is happening in Detroit is perhaps even more frightening. Today there are about 1,000 fewer police officers in Detroit than there was a decade ago. But crime just continues to rise. So now even the police are telling people to “enter Detroit at your own risk“. With very little police protection, an increasing number of citizens are taking matters into their own hands. As I noted in a previous article, justifiable homicide in the city of Detroit increased by 79 percent in 2011, and the rate of self-defense killings in Detroit is approximately 2200 percent above the national average. But don’t laugh at what is happening in cities like San Bernardino, Oakland and Detroit. What is happening in those cities will be coming to your community soon enough.
From coast to coast, criminals are becoming increasingly bold and increasingly desperate. My sister lives near a large city in the middle part of the country, and a house across the street from the one her family just moved into was recently vandalized. The criminals took all of the exposed copper pipe and copper wire that could be accessed easily.
Other criminals have become very focused on gold because it has soared in value and it is easy to resell. For example, there have been more than 250 gold chain robberies in Stockton, California just since the month of April. According to the CBS News affiliate in Sacramento, criminals are just ripping these chains right off of the necks of unsuspecting citizens, and many of the victims that have tried to resist have ended up getting hurt. Normally the criminals sell off the jewelry within 24 hours, so solving these crimes is a real challenge…

Most victims of the robberies are female (65 percent), and 44 percent of victims are age 50 or older, the data showed. The most common time of day for the crimes were between 12 and 5 p.m., though this only accounts for about a third of the crime.
Parino said robbers took even police by surprise initially.
“When [criminals] do these crimes, they normally get rid of the items within 24 hours,” he said.
That’s why police are now checking up on secondhand stores and pawn shops on a weekly basis.

Many dismiss reports such as these as “anomalies”, but how many “anomalies” do we need before we finally admit that we have a widespread problem in our society?
Personally, there are many major U.S. cities that I would not want to be living right in the middle of right now.
Just take a look at Chicago. It has become one of the deadliest major cities on the entire globe. In recent years we have seen massive cuts to the police budget coupled with a dramatic increase in gang activity in Chicago.
The murder rate in Chicago is way up this year and the police force is massively outnumbered.
As I have written about previously, there are only about 200 police officers assigned to Chicago’s Gang Enforcement Unit. It is their job to handle the estimated 100,000 gang members living in the city.
How would you like to be outnumbered 100,000 to 200?
When things really hit the fan, Chicago is going to be a complete and utter nightmare.
And sometimes we get a peek into how people will behave when things break down. Just look at what happened during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
If you can believe it, some criminals actually took advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday to loot homes in the Breezy Point neighborhood of Queens. That was the neighborhood where approximately 100 homes burned down. The suffering of the residents of that neighborhood made headlines all over the nation. But that has not stopped criminals from moving in and taking advantage of their vulnerability…

Cops told the victims burglaries are on the rise in Breezy Point.
There were 14 home break-ins from Nov. 12 to Nov. 18, compared with none a year before.
And in the 28 days before that, there were 48 burglaries. Only four break-ins were reported in that time period the year before.
In the days after Sandy, some of the hardest-hit areas were plagued with store looting, home burglaries, street muggings and other crimes.

There are some very sick people out there. These days you simply do not know who you can trust. The person you meet on the street may be perfectly fine or they may be a total sicko. It is so hard to tell. But without a doubt there are a lot of sickos out there. Just check out what authorities in Pennsylvania found recently…

Animal welfare workers say 11 puppies were found dead and skinned near an eastern Pennsylvania park.

Sadly, authorities in that area had come across another similar incident recently…

The discovery is second disturbing incident in the county in less than a week. About 20 miles away in Lynn Township police say a dog was discovered skinned and cooked.

Who would do such things?
What in the world is happening to this country?
Things are changing, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. As conditions shift, we are all going to have to carefully evaluate what is necessary to protect our families. Don’t ignore all of the warning signs. Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that everything is going to be okay is not going to help anything.

Spike in vehicle breakins

Westfield police report rash of vehicle break-ins, urge residents to lock their vehicles

WESTFIELD – Police, probing a rash of vehicle break-ins over the last month or so, urge residents to lock their vehicles - especially at night.

Lt. David Ragazzini, head of the detective bureau, said 37 such break-ins, mostly into unlocked vehicles, have been reported since June 12.

“We get a fair amount, but that is a pretty high number,” said Ragazzini. “For the most part they are unlocked vehicles with valuables left inside over night."

Such things as wallets, laptop computers and GPS systems have been taken. “It’s quick and easy and nobody locks their car,” Ragazzini said, adding that most of the break-ins involve vehicles parked in driveways or in front of residential properties.

The vehicle break-ins have been scattered throughout the city with clusters reported in the downtown area and in neighborhoods off Western Avenue and East Mountain Road.

Police from a number of other Western Massachusetts communities, including Southwick and South Hadley, have reported a spike in vehicle break-ins.

How to reinforce entry doors

I am posting the most basic of security for our outter doors. Installation of a good deadlock and screws that reach the studs are very important for door security. I have been to a few break ins that I would just remove the lock which was not even damaged in the break-in. The door would then need heavy repair or replacement to complete the job. Yes, and the old undamaged lock returned to the door if it was a heavy duty lock, with a new heavy striker plate and long screws to reach the studs.

So with a wood framed door, the strength is in the striker with the long heavy duty screws. Also for security sake do not skimp on a lower grade 3 lock for the big box chains. They are un-keyable and their srike plates are cheap.

Step 1: Overview

I never realized how easy it is to kick in a solid door that has old hardware until I tried it on our demonstration door. With two kicks in only five seconds, I destroyed the doorjamb and was in the house.
You need to upgrade the deadbolt and lockset plates of your exterior doors if you haven’t already done so. FBI burglary statistics show that 65 percent of break-ins occur by forcing in the front, back or garage service door (not to mention the 12 percent of entries where burglars find your “hidden” key or simply walk in through an unlocked door).
In this story, we’ll show you how to strengthen your exterior doors in three ways. We’ll replace an old deadbolt with a quality Grade 1 deadbolt. Then, we’ll replace the deadbolt strike plate with a four-screw strike box and faceplate—attached with 3-in. wood screws that reach the wall frame. Finally, we’ll replace the lip strike plate and its wimpy 3/4-in. screws with 3-in. wood screws. We’ll also show you a handy method to turn a small deadbolt hole into a larger hole.
The techniques we show in this article will work on any type of exterior door. But keep in mind that these techniques may not be as effective if you have glass sidelight windows or large glass panels in your doors.
For this project, you need only basic carpentry tools, as well as a 2-1/8 in. hole saw bit and a 1-in. spade bit (check the deadbolt packaging for the exact bit size required). Home centers usually carry deadbolt installation kits with the right size bits.

Step 2: Check all exterior doors

A secure entry starts with a solid door and a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt with a solid 1-in. long throw bolt (see “Buying a Deadbolt”). Any exterior door that only has a lock in the doorknob isn’t secure. A sturdy screwdriver or small pry bar can quickly bow the doorjamb enough to release the latch.
Check your existing deadbolt. First, make sure the screws are tight. Open the door and extend the throw bolt. If it extends less than 1 in., or if it’s wobbly, a new deadbolt will be more secure.
Next, check the doorjamb and both strike plates. Remove the screws from the deadbolt and lockset strike plates on the door frame. If the screws aren’t 3 in. long, replace them, and also upgrade both plates. (Note: Use shorter screws if sidelight windows are less than 3 in. from the doorjamb.) These longer screws will reinforce the doorjamb, which is a vulnerable spot.

Begin by removing the old deadbolt. Almost all types are held by two screws on the interior side of the door and two screws on the faceplate (Photo 1). Measure the cylinder hole size and the “backset” distance, that is, the distance from the center of the hole to the door edge (Photo 1). You’ll need these dimensions when you purchase a new deadbolt.
Photo 2 shows how to enlarge a deadbolt hole using scrap lumber, a task that is only necessary if your new deadbolt is too big to fit the existing hole (the normal size for a cylinder hole is 2-1/8 in.). The scrap board engages the center guide bit of the hole saw and keeps the new hole centered. Otherwise, you can’t get a clean and accurate cut.
To find the starting point for the hole saw bit, clamp the scrap board to the door and mark both the vertical and the horizontal center of the new cylinder hole. Make sure to hold the drill level and straight so the hole saw bit doesn’t bind and jerk your wrist and arm. If you don’t have a full-depth hole saw bit, chip the wood away from a partially drilled hole, then continue drilling. Go slow so you don’t splinter the opposite side when the bit goes through the door.
Now clean up the hole and test-fit the deadbolt. If the throw-bolt hole (which runs from the cylinder hole to the door edge) is too small, clean it out with a file. Make sure the attached throw-bolt strike plate fits flush (Photo 3), then attach the bolt followed by the deadbolt cylinder. Hand-drive the screws; a power drill may strip the threads.

Odds of Home Burglary*

Your house is at greater risk if:

It sits on a corner lot (more visible to a browsing burglar and a natural place to stop and ask for directions)
It is located close to a major highway exit (less than 1 mile)
It is located on a through street, which gives a burglar a quicker escape (dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs are safer)
It borders a wooded area or playground (provides concealed access for burglars)
It is in a wealthier neighborhood
It features no signs of young children living there (burglars avoid as someone may be home)
It was recently purchased (burglars know you haven’t yet developed close familiarity with neighbors)

Effective burglary deterrents:*

House is occupied
Newspaper and mail picked up
Lights and noise (TV, radio) inside house (set on timer when gone)
Car in the driveway
Motion-activated exterior lights

Replace the lockset strike plate

Remove the lockset's lip strike plate and 3/4-in. screws. Predrill and attach a new plate with No. 8 x 3-in. screws that are angled in slightly to catch the stud. Predrill with a 1/8-in. bit.

To further reinforce the doorjamb, install a new plate in place of the old lip strike plate that serves the doorknob lockset. Attach it with 3-in. screws. Make sure the screwheads seat flush with the face of the strike plate. We used No. 8 x 3-in. screws. No. 10 x 3-in. screws (used for the deadbolt plate) were too large. Remember to angle the screws back slightly to be sure to catch the framing (Figure A). Again, you may have to chisel a slightly larger mortise and predrill to drive the screws.

Buying a Deadbolt

Most people choose a deadbolt for its color or finish, but when entry security is paramount, the critical deadbolt feature is its grade. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) subjects all locks and components to attacks by hammers, saws, wrenches and other tools. Then it grades the lock: Grade 1 (best and toughest), Grade 2 or Grade 3.
Most locks you find in home centers and hardware stores are Grade 2 or 3. Some Grade 2 locks may list Grade 1 components on the package, but that doesn’t give the lock a Grade 1 rating. However, Grade 2 is still a good-quality lock for residential use. We only found one fully compliant Grade 1 deadbolt in local home centers and hardware stores. Professional locksmiths also are a good resource to find Grade 1 deadbolts.
Before you shop for a deadbolt, measure the hole size where the current cylinder fits, as well as the “backset” distance from the center of the cylinder hole to the edge of the door (Photo 1, Step 3). Most new deadbolts require a 2-1/8 in. cylinder hole, but some of them have inserts to fit the smaller 1-1/2 in. hole, so you don’t have to drill to enlarge the hole (Photo 2, Step 3).
The backset distance is usually either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 in., so make sure the new deadbolt has the identical backset. Most new locks are adjustable to fit either backset dimension. Just read the box carefully (you may have to open it and read the directions to find the information).
Also decide whether to buy a single cylinder (keyed on exterior side of lock only) or a double cylinder deadbolt (keyed on both sides). Check local building codes too, as they may prohibit double cylinder locks for fire safety reasons (it’s more difficult to escape because you must have the key).

Install a heavy-duty strike plate to strengthen the doorjamb. We didn’t use the strike plate that came with the deadbolt. We opted for a more secure strike box plate that features four screws instead of two. (Two screws are installed inside the strike box to add strength; see Photo 6.) Mark the center of the old deadbolt strike plate (Photo 1), then temporarily install the new faceplate and deeply score around it to mark its position (Photo 2).
Next, remove the plate, then chisel and drill out space for both the new plate and the strike box. If the strike box is larger than the existing hole, use a 1-in. spade bit to bore two holes, spaced apart the width and the depth of the box (Photo 3).
Now remove the wood with a wood chisel to fit both the strike box plate and the faceplate (Photo 4). Be sure to use the wood chisel with the bevel side against the wood to keep from gouging too deep.
Finally, mount the plate and box and attach them with four 3-in. screws (Photo 5). Predrill pilot holes into the wall studs to make the screws easier to drive. Set the screws snug to the plate; overdriving might bow the jamb.
Now, kick back and rest a little easier, knowing you’ve made your home more secure.

Three-inch screws will go through the frame and penetrate the wall studs 1-1/2 to 2 in. Angle the screws back slightly into the wall to make sure they hit the studs. The studs become the primary door reinforcement, not the jamb.

The Di2000S-A is wireless driveway alarms kit that ships with sensor/transmitter and a plug-in receiver. The sensor uses Passive Infrared Technology (PIR) which means heat and movement must trigger the sensor. This helps to eliminate false alarms other sensors are vulnerable to like shadows, headlights, rain, etc. The sensor is capable of transmitting a wireless signal of up to 2,000 feet to the receiver/speaker. Terrain, building materials, and other environmental factors will decrease the transmission range.
This system was designed to alert when movement is detected within the detection zone, but may be placed anywhere. For example, you can place a sensor outside over your storage shed or barn to alert you when someone approaches the door. Retail stores can use the sensor to alert customers when someone enters the store.
The receiver will play one of four tones set by the transmitter. For example, you can place a sensor on the driveway and when it detects movement, the receiver plays a “ding” tone. You could set another transmitter/sensor on another area and when it detects movement, it can play a “dong” tone. This enables you to distinguish which sensor is triggered. You also have the ability to add as many receivers to the system as you want thus increasing the listening area of the set.
If you are a looking for an indoor entrance alert, you may be interested in the DA50L-A Wireless Entrance Alert Set. These products are compatible with each other. The key differences are that the sensor on the Di2000S-A is weatherproof and emits a straight line as a detection zone whereas the DA50L-A emits more of wider detection zone.
The Di2000T-A (Transmitter/Sensor)

The Di2000T-A is an outdoor rated PIR based transmitter that detects any movement within the detection zone. The sensor shoots out a invisible signal that is approximately 1' x 1' at 25 feet to 2' x 2' at a distance of 50 feet. Ideally you would mount the sensor so it could shoot a mean across your driveway or other area you want to monitor. When the automobile passes through the detection zone, the sensor sends the wireless signal to the plug-in receiver/speaker in your home.
The transmitter/sensor consumes very little and ships with a 9-volt battery. Located inside the cover are six dip-switches (numbered 1-6) which allow you to pair it with receivers and determine which of the four available tones it will signal.
The Di2000R-A (Receiver/Speaker)

The DI2000R is a receiver/speaker that is not weatherproof and is powered by a plug-in 12VDC power supply (w/ 6 foot cord.) The receiver can sit on a table or may be easily mounted with factory - drilled mounted holes located on the backside of the speaker.
The receiver also features a resettable counter triggered by the sensors that are paired to it. Like the sensors, the receiver/speaker also features 6 dip-switches which are located on the back of the unit. Dip switches numbered 1-4 must match transmitter/sensors you want to pair with the speaker, number 5 controls the output of the 12VDC terminals on the back of the receiver (with a one second or five second 12VDC output) and dip switch number 6 is for future use.
Dip switch 5 controls the output of the 12V DC terminal screws on the receiver. The provides power for accessories that use 12 Volts like buzzers, horns, sirens, strobes or anything other 12VDC powered devices. The unit also features an external speaker terminal (SPKR) screws which will allow you to add an auxiliary speaker. A volume control knob adjusts volume on receiver and auxiliary speaker.
How it Works

Both transmitter and receiver have antennas that allow 360 degree rotation and pull away from sides of boxes. For best results in communication between transmitter and receiver it is ideal for the antennas to be on the same plane. Example: (If one antenna is pointing up in the vertical position, then the other antenna should be pointing up also. If one antenna is in the horizontal position, then the other antenna needs to be horizontal and pointing at each other for optimum reception). When it comes to distance in communication between transmitter and receiver environmental condition need to be considered. Line of sight without obstacles is ideal. Every tree, bush, fence, car, building in direct line of sight will reduce communication between units. These units should give you approximately 2000’ range between transmitter and receiver, In some cases you may get a distance of to 3000’. You may also add additional transmitters to one receiver or additional receivers to one transmitter.

Columbine Student’s father 12 years later
Guess our national leaders didn’t expect this, hmm? On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton , Colorado , was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.
They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness…

The following is a portion of the transcript:
“Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.
“The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain’s heart.
“In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA – because I don’t believe that they are responsible for my daughter’s death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel’s murder I would be their strongest opponent.
I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy — it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine’s tragedy occurs — politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties… We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.”
“As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. Nicole Foss, who under the pen name ‘Stoneleigh’ co-edits the Automatic Earth website, just did a long-form interview with an Italian magazine where she lays out her peak energy, societal collapse thesis in the coherent, accessible way that fans of her writing have come to expect. One part was especially interesting:

When you have economic contraction you also have a substantial contraction of the trust horizon. This deprives political institutions at the national and international level of the trust that would give them political legitimacy. They become stranded assets from a trust perspective. People no longer internalize the rules that those institutions are attempting to impose. The response is typically surveillance, coercion, and repression. This picture basically suggests that it is pointless to look for solutions from the top down. It is not solutions that will come from the top down but more problems.
So politicians typically make a bad situation worse as expensively as possible. The systems that we have established have become sclerotic and unresponsive, hostage to vested interests with no ability to adapt quickly to give people abilities to cope with rapid change. I don’t look for solutions from them. The people who are part of that system are typically the people who have gained significant amounts from the status quo. These are the last people who are likely to change things, so I don’t look for political actions.
In many parts of the world, especially in parts of Europe, people always ask me if they should take political action, change their policies at a national level to solve these problems. And I tell them unfortunately not because there isn’t any mechanism for these large bureaucratic institutions to offer anything that would realistically help, and that they‘re far more likely to try to maintain their own existence by sucking even more resources out of the periphery in order to maintain the center.
This is a bit like when a body becomes hypothermic, not enough heat. It shuts off circulation to the fingers and toes in order to preserve the body temperature of the core. That’s what we can expect politicians and political systems to do. Unfortunately for us, we are the fingers and toes and we have to look after ourselves. Nothing is coming from the top.
My solutions, such as they are, are grassroots solutions. We have to build things from the bottom up. Our centralized life support systems will fail over time because they’re critically dependent on tax revenues that won’t be there and cheap energy that won’t be there. These centralized systems won’t be able to deliver the goods and services we’ve come to rely on.
What we need are alternatives that come from the bottom up. The reason these work is because they operate within the trust horizon. They don’t have to stay small. They can grow to whatever size the trust supports and that can be different in different places. The crucial thing is that they come from the bottom up, they’re small and responsive and not bureaucratic, they make the best use of very small amounts of resources because they don’t have enormous administrative overhead.
It’s amazing what can be done at a very small scale. It wouldn’t replace what the centralized services have given us, but we can cover the basics. The key point is that we have to do it right now because we don’t have much time before we start to see centralized systems failing to deliver what they have delivered in the past. The amount of money in the system can contract very quickly. That undercuts what these centralized systems are capable of delivering in the next few years. So we must start right now building grass roots initiatives, and community is crucial to that.
We need to begin at the individual level because if we are on a solid foundation ourselves we can then help others. If we are not then our attempt to help others is fundamentally weakened. So we have to get our own house in order but then we have to think much more broadly. We must build community. Relationships of trust are the foundation of society. So we need to work with our neighbors, we need to know our neighbors and we need connections with family and community so we’re less dependent on money.
In many parts of the world where people really don’t have any money anyway, their society functions on barter and gifts, working together, exchanging skills. This works as a model. It doesn’t get you a large fancy sophisticated industrial society because it doesn’t scale up that well. But it works very well at a small scale, and this is the kind of structure that we need to rebuild.
In some parts of the world there’s a lot more of that than in other parts. So it’s actually interesting to think that it’s not necessarily the places that are the wealthiest at the moment that will do best in the future.
The analogy I use is that if you’re going to fall out of a window how much it hurts when you hit the ground depends on how many floors up you were at the time. If you were on the hundredth floor and you do nothing to prepare before you fall it’s going to be fatal. If you’re much further down it’s less painful. If you fell out of a ground floor window you might not even notice. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself off and not very much has changed.
So the places that will do best are the places where there is already a lot of trust at the foundational level, where people are used to working together, where people are not that far removed from the land. Places where there’s an enormous disconnect between resources that are available in that area and what resources that are actually used, where societies are highly atomized and used to a very high standard of living, those places will see enormous shock to the system because those people don’t have any skills or connection to land or family to fall back on.

Some thoughts
Viewed through a “trust horizon” lens, a lot of global and national institutions are indeed becoming “stranded assets”. Who outside of the New York Times editorial department trusts the European Union or the Federal Reserve these days? How many people still think the companies selling processed food or advertising prescription drugs on TV have their customers’ welfare at heart? Virtually no one who can read.
If you need an excuse to get to know your neighbors or generally get involved in the local community, this is it.
Big modern cities are the 100-story windows in Foss’ analogy. Life there is going to get very hard very fast if her systemic failure predictions come true. Conversely, small towns with thriving farmers markets and lots of roof-top solar panels will find the next couple of decades relatively less stressful. As Foss says later in the interview, “If you psychologically prepare for a much lower material standard of living in advance, it doesn’t have to be anywhere nearly as painful.”

Yes my friends,2012 is here and most folks ya talk with, seem alittle apprehensive about the future. Its hard not to blame people with the economy not recovering, food prices rising, and general unrest all over the world, including the US. I have talked with people and I know that security is on there minds. To stay secure in your person is elemental part of our inherent list of needs. Staying in touch with family and friends in a crisis can be crucial. Last year we in the northeast were hit by hurricane micro bursts,tornado's,severe early snow storms and earthquakes. I guess you could say somethings pissed. Well, I am in fear of pissed planets so this year I anit doing nothing to make the earth mad. I ain't taking paper or plastic, I am gonna use the reusable. I'm gonna plant as much food and trees as I'm allowed. I'm gonna always speak for energy that's new and clean. I'm gonna make it known I want outta war for good. I am only gonna spend my money on things to keep the family safe.
Yes, a generator and a store of water and canned goods for storage. Any thing bought I will try and make sure it has a use for me and family to keep us safe and alive and thriving. So my friends, that too me makes sense for the coming new year. Have a happy and safe 2012, for it is the future that has arrived

Home Security Tips For The Holidays

The holidays are a time of peace, joy and wonderful family memories. But with all the decorating, shopping, gift giving and celebrating, attention to home security often slips just when it is needed the most.
According to the FBI, close to 400,000 burglaries take place in the U.S. between November and December each year. Burglars like a sure thing, and a house filled with expensive gifts and a lack of security is a temptation they might not pass over.
Remember that criminals shop for the holidays too; they just do their shopping by stealing what they want. Don't let your home become a statistic. Take steps to lower the risk of your house becoming a crime scene during the holidays.

Alarms and Lights

The long nights of winter provide hours more of darkness to cover a burglar's misdeeds. Discourage would-be prowlers with some easy steps.

Your home should always be well lit around the perimeters, and it's even better if you have motion-activated lights that can scare a burglar away before he gets close.
Consider an alarm system linked to a security company's central monitoring station. Display a sticker or notice with the alarm company's name in a prominent location near the front of your home.
Don't underestimate the power of a dog as a burglar-deterrent. Thieves want to make a quick, quiet entry and exit, and a barking dog, even a small one, is likely to make them think twice about approaching your home.
Keep your car alarm set when your car is parked in front of your home. It takes a professional thief just minutes to break into your car and steal your possessions.

When You Are Away From Home

An empty house is very attractive to criminals. Don't make it obvious you are away from home by leaving newspapers or mail piling up in front of the house, trashcans left by the curb after pick-up day or a driveway empty for days.

Ask a neighbor or friend to bring mail, packages and newspapers inside. Have them park their car in your driveway periodically while you are gone.
Have your neighbor return your trashcans to their normal spot after collection day.
Use timers to set lights to go on and off in at least two areas of your home during the evening and early morning hours.
Pay a neighborhood child to shovel snow from your front walk and driveway while you are gone.
Don't leave your house key hidden under a rock or the front mat. Burglars will look there first. Give the spare key to the person watching your house while you are gone.
Don't use social media sites to announce to hundreds of friends that you will be gone on vacation and your house left vacant. Depending on your privacy settings, you might be announcing your plans to strangers looking for empty houses to target.
Have garden services continue as usual during your vacation. An overgrown lawn announces that no one is home.
Keep shades and blinds partly open, or ask a neighbor to open and shut them each day. Leaving all your home's windows covered indicates that the house is empty.

Don't Flaunt Big-Ticket Purchases

Big-ticket items like laptops, televisions, video game consoles and music systems are wonderful gifts to find under the tree, but burglars like gifts too, especially if they are taking them from someone else.

Don't leave valuables where they can be seen through windows. Avoid piling stacks of gifts underneath a Christmas tree displayed in the front window of your home.
Put away wrapped gifts, boxes clearly indicating expensive electronic items and other valuables before guests arrive for an open-house party.
Avoid leaving wrapped gifts, bags from shopping trips or big-ticket boxes in your car. Bring them inside as soon as you are home.
Crush large boxes from expensive items and push them all the way into your trashcan, rather than leaving them folded on top or sticking out of the can. Those boxes will catch the eye of a crook.
Don't announce expensive purchases on social media sites.

Basic Home Security

You should always be aware of basic steps to keeping your home secure.

Don't invite burglars in by keeping gates, windows or doors open or unlocked.
Keep bushes near windows and the front entry trimmed so they can't be used for concealment.
Vary your routine occasionally by leaving for work or coming home at a different time.
Secure your doors with a good quality deadbolt. Reinforce sliding patio doors with a patio bar or even a broomstick or two-by-four.
Keep your home's address clearly displayed with reflective numbers on the curb or front of the house. This makes it easy for police or emergency responders to quickly find your home if there is an emergency.
Take photos of valuables, and write down serial numbers. This may be the only way to identify your belongings if they are stolen.

The holidays are a time for joy, not heartbreak. Keep your home safe and secure by taking basic security measures, and keep the bad guys outside where they belong.

When we think security for home or business the first place to consider is the outer perimeter. Whether you are protecting a home store front and back, an out door facility, or alleyway, you want to know early on there has been a breach.
I like the wireless approach for easy installation and practicality. Many of the new systems will let you add more sensors so protecting a large part of your property is convenient. If you at question for placement, the end of a driveway, back yard area with a fence that someone could climb over, or near and alley way coming to your door are just a few suggestions. Once upon a time there were 19 bad men. Some were from Saudi Arabia, some were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Egypt and one was from Lebanon. One day as they were wandering around Afghanistan, they went into a cave where the mean Osama was living. They all decided it would be fun if they would go to the U.S., learn how to fly Boeing 757′s, go to airports, get on 4 different planes, take them over and fly them into buildings, setting the buildings on fire, thus causing them to collapse. The wise and evil Osama agreed.
But there were problems. One said “how can we get into the U.S. since most of us are on terrorist watch lists”? The wise and evil Osama said, we will pray that Allah will cause those in charge in the U.S. to intervene and allow you into the U.S. Another said, “Since none of us know how to fly, how will we fly the 4, Boeing 757′s”? The wise and evil Osama said “you will go to the Pensacola Naval Air base and they will teach you how to fly a single engine plane”. “How will we take over the planes’? ” You will each carry a box cutter. Once you show the box cutter, then the several hundred passengers will cower in terror as you take over the planes”.
After they did as they were told and all of the pieces fell into place, they did, indeed take over 4, Boeing 757′s, only carrying box cutters. And After only becoming mildly proficient in flying small engine planes and not being able to perform any complex maneuvers, the pilots miraculously performed aerobatic maneuvers that not even the most experienced jet pilots are able to perform. After they had taken over these 4 planes, they were all allowed to fly these planes around Washington, D.C. and the entire east coast without any challenge from the U.S. military. The wise and evil Osama arranged for NORAD to run a drill at the exact same time, with the exact same scenario, calling for a complete stand down of the U.S. air defense.
Once they crashed their planes into buildings, more miracles happened. The jet fuel from 2 of the planes, normally burning at a maximum at 1800 degrees, magically heated up to almost 3000 degrees and melted not only the 47 steel columns in the core of the buildings, but all of the exterior steel as well. This was being done while people, braving the 3000 degree temperatures, still healthy and alive in the buildings, were begging for help at the blown out windows. Not even their clothes were burned. Then, as if by magic, first one, then the other skyscraper, fell down in 12 seconds.
Meanwhile, the wise and evil Osama had still more miracles planned. The third plane performed an impossible maneuver and crashed only a few feet above the ground into the Pentagon building. Even though the plane was 125 feet wide, it managed to slam into a wall of the building and leave only a 16 foot hole. Then the evil and wise Osama made that plane disappear without a trace of debris. He even managed to preserve a book and a wooden table without any burns right next to the exploding jet fuel. He then arranged for more than 40 cameras that recorded the crash to either malfunction or be taken by the authorities.
But the wise and evil Osama wasn’t through. The fourth plane was still flying around un opposed when brave passengers took over the plane. No, Osama didn’t explain why the brave passengers didn’t resist the evil man with the box cutter in the first place, but no matter. The wise and evil Osama then arranged for cell phone calls to be made from this jet liner flying at 500mph and cruising at 30,000 feet. This was indeed another miracle since this was never done before, nor since. Those brave passengers then decided not to try to fly the plane, they decided to crash it into a field. But the wise and evil Osama performed still another miracle. Even though the 4th plane crashed into a field, the plane’s debris was spread over 5 miles — almost as if the debris came from the sky above and not the ground below.
Oh, but the wise and evil Osama had one more trick up his sleeve. Back in the city, where 2 steel skyscrapers had collapsed in their own footprint due to fire, a third skyscraper in the area also had a moderate fire going in a couple of its’ floors. This time the evil and wise Osama would announce his next evil miracle. He caused both the BBC and CNN to announced that this 3rd building had collapsed due to fire, even though it would not collapse for another 23 minutes. Then it did collapse, but to show the evil Osama was not totally evil, he arranged for this building with fires almost totally out, to collapse in its’ own footprint, so not to damage the surrounding area.
There is a happy ending. All of the King’s soldiers and all of the King’s police and all of the King’s airport security officers and all of the King’s swat teams and all of the King’s stooges and all of the King’s dupes, lived happily ever after.

Home security isn't just for private homes. Apartment dwellers also have lots of options to make their homes safer and more secure. While nothing is a guarantee, a few easy changes can go a long way toward deterring crime in your apartment.

Secure Doors

Doors need to open to let you get in and out of your apartment, leaving you with the challenge of making sure no unwanted guests can also enter your home. Here are some simple ideas for securing your apartment doors:

Doors made of solid metal or wood are the best choices. If you don't feel your door is adequate, ask your landlord if he or she would consider replacing it with something more substantial.
Every exterior door in your apartment should have a deadbolt lock in addition to a high quality doorknob lock.
Experts suggest a deadbolt with a one-inch minimum throw and a strike plate with three-inch minimum screws. Be sure the screws penetrate well into your doorframe. Installing more than one deadbolt will provide an additional deterrent. Most criminals will choose the door that looks the easiest for a break-in.
Glass in or near your door, while decorative, decreases your overall security because it is so easily broken. If your door has some glass, be sure it sits high enough (or your lock sits low enough) that no one could reach through the area and unlock your door. You may want to install metal bars or a grating over a large glass panel.
If your apartment has sliding patio or balcony doors, install a charley bar to prevent break-ins.
Your front door should have a wide-angle peephole so you can see who is outside before opening the door. A video surveillance system is an even better option.

Window Security Options

Windows bring in sunlight, moonlight and fresh air; however, they are another area of vulnerability when it comes to apartment security. You can make your windows safer by installing:

Anti-lift hardware that doesn't allow windows to be lifted out
Blocking devices that keep windows from being opened more than six inches
Metal bars or gates.

Before installing bars, be sure to check the fire safety laws in your neighborhood, as window bars are illegal in some areas. Some window bars come equipped with a door you can open from the inside so you'll still be able to get out in an emergency.

People have used alarm systems to protect their homes long before the discovery of electricity, and natural alarms are still very effective. Be sure your apartment intercom system is working and never buzz anyone in unless you are sure they belong in the building.
Before opening your door, always check to be sure you know who is out there. If you aren't positive the person ringing your bell is safe, don't open the door, and if the person refuses to leave, call the police.
Don't put your full name on the apartment nameplate.
If you walk into your apartment and it appears to be tampered with, don't stay and check things out. Leave right away and call the police.
Leave some lights on in your apartment when you are away. You may even want to have a radio or television playing. A timer is a great way to have lights and sound turn on and off at seemingly random intervals while you are out.
Lock your door and turn on any alarms whenever you leave the apartment, even if only for a short while. These devices are only effective if you use them.
Never leave a spare key outside your apartment.
Request identification from service technicians who come to your door.
Stop your mail delivery when you are on vacation.
Get to know your neighbors so you can look out for them and they for you.

As stated in the title of this post. Good sound economies make safe and secure nations. Now, lets check out this articule I found on the DRUDGE REPORT concerning the federal goverment and how they spend the citizens money. I also included a response from a upset taxpayer with a very funny take on waste of money. At this point we the people are less secure in our homes and persons, less secure in on future economic choices, and alot of what used to be wealth is drying up. The Obama administration is setting new workplace regulations to assist foreign workers who fill goat herding positions in the U.S. , including employee-paid cell phones and comfy beds.

These new special procedures issued by the Labor Department must be followed by employers who want to hire temporary agricultural foreign workers to perform sheep herding or goat herding activities. It describes strict rules for sleeping quarters, lighting, food storage, bathing, laundry, cooking and new rules for the counters where food is prepared.

“A separate sleeping unit shall be provided for each person, except in a family arrangement,” says the rules signed by Jane Oates, assistant secretary for employment and training administration at the Labor Department.

“Such a unit shall include a comfortable bed, cot or bunk, with a clean mattress,” the rules state.

Diane Katz, a research fellow in regulatory policy at The Heritage Foundation, unearthed the policy in the "Federal Register," the massive daily journal of proposed regulations that Washington bureaucrats publish every day.

Under the Obama Administration, the nanny state has imposed 75 new major regulations with annual costs of $38 billion.

“This captures what is wrong with government,” Katz said. “I could not have made this up.”

With unemployment holding steady at 9% and government regulations adding more burden to small businesses, such as those run by ranching families, Katz said, bureaucrats aren’t helping.

“Instead of remedying the problem, the regulations make it that much harder,” Katz insisted. “We may need a whole set of regulations just to define what a comfortable bed is. I imagine it’s not straw."

The new lighting standards say that in areas where it is not feasible to provide electrical service such as tents or mobile trailers, lanterns must be provided. “Kerosene wick lights meet the definition of lantern,” the regulations say.

“When workers or their families are permitted or required to cook in their individual unit, a space shall be provided with adequate lighting and ventilation.”

“Wall surfaces next to all food preparation and cooking areas shall be of nonabsorbent, easy-to-clean material. Wall surfaces next to cooking areas shall be of fire-resistant material,” the regulations say.

“It makes you wonder,” Katz said, “how they ever did this before the government got involved?”

“Who knew we needed all of this federal help for herding goats?” Katz quipped.

Tis the season to be out and about riding our bikes and seeing the country. When traveling with your bike it is good to think security. WSN recommends you purchase a bike lock and keep it wraped around your bike. I would suggest a lock and key,weather proof lock. The lock on this page is a good all purpose lock and should fit under the seat of most bikes. There are some great new bike paths all over the country and some great sights to see. But remember to bring along a lock and use it, because nothing ruins a trip more the losing your ride.
