Ausflug nach Victoria

12. Juli: Auf unserem Programm steht heute Victoria, die Hauptstadt British Columbias am südlichen Ende von Vancouver Island. Doug und Sue haben darauf bestanden, uns ihren Van zu leihen, und es ist ein Vergnügen, nach knapp sechs Wochen 30-feet(9 Meter)-motorhome mal wieder ein kleines flottes Auto zu fahren.

Zuerst wollen wir in die berühmten Butchart Gardens. Um einen großen Umweg um die Bucht (Saanich Inlet) zu sparen, überqueren wir sie mit der Fähre Mill Bay–Brentwood Bay (25 Minuten). Mit $34 für einen Pkw mit zwei Insassen ist sie allerdings nicht gerade billig.

Die Butchart Gardens (Eintritt $33 pro Person) sind eine große Gartenanlage in hügeligem Gelände, vor dem jede Gartenschau verblassen muss. Zum Glück sind wir schon gegen 9.30 Uhr dort, ab 10 Uhr schieben sich die Besuchermassen über die schmalen Wege. Der Rundgang dauert etwa eineinhalb Stunden.

Anschließend fahren wir ins Zentrum Victorias um den Inner Harbour (und sind froh, keinen Parkplatz für ein motorhome suchen zu müssen). Dort treiben wir uns etwa zwei Stunden im sehenswerten Bereich Parlament, Empress Hotel und Hafen herum. Hier kann man sicher auch wesentlich mehr Zeit verbringen.

Dann fahren wir zurück nach Cobble Hill, wo wir die letzten Tage bis zu unserem Rückflug verbringen werden. Das motorhome bleibt hier stehen (nach einer Fahrstrecke von 5.560 Meilen bzw. 8.900 km). Wir werden zur Fähre Victoria-Vancouver gebracht, auf dem Festland fährt ein Bus zum Flughafen Vancouver.

Im Oktober wollen wir dann zurückkehren, die Fähre Victoria-Port Angeles (US-Staat Washington) nehmen und auf einer Südwestroute über Oregon, Kalifornien, Utah, Nevada, Arizona und Texas zurück nach Florida fahren, wo unser Winterplatz wartet.

Excursion to Victoria

July 12: On our schedule for today is Victoria, the capital of British Columbia at the southern end of Vancouver Island. Doug and Sue have insisted on borrowing us their van, and it is a pleasure after driving a 30-ft.-motorhome for almost six weeks to drive a small zippy car again.

At first we want to visit the famous Butchart Gardens. To save a big detour around the bay (Saanich Inlet) we cross it on the Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay ferry (25 minutes). At $34 for a car and two passengers it is not a real bargain, though.

Butchart Gardens (entry fee $33 a person) is a big garden in hilly terrain against which every horticultural show looks pale. Fortunately we arrive at 9.30 am already, from 10 am visitors slowly move en masse along the narrow walks. The tour takes around an hour and a half.

Later we go to downtown Victoria around the inner harbour (and are glad not to have to look for a parking spot for a motorhome). There we rove around for two hours in the worth visiting area around parliament, Empress hotel, and habour. Surely one can spend much more time here.

Then we go back to Cobble Hill where we will spend the last days before our return flight. The motorhome will be stored here (after driving 5,560 miles / 8,900 km). We will be driven to the ferry Victoria-Vancouver, and on the mainland a bus goes to Vancouver airport.

We are planning to return in October, take the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles (US state of Washington) and on a southwestern route via Oregon, California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Texas drive back to Florida for the winter.

Zurück an der Ostküste von Vancouver Island

10. Juli: Wir fahren zurück an die Ostküste von Vancouver Island. In Parksville fahren wir mittags noch einmal in den Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, in dem wir vor ein paar Tagen nur abends kurz mit dem Fahrrad waren. Dort verbringen wir eine Weile am Strand, laufen, sitzen ab und zu auf einer Bank und genießen das typische Seewetter bei Sonne, rd. 21 Grad C und einer kühlen Brise vom Meer. Anders als die State Parks in den USA, die für den Besuch Gebühren erheben, sind die Provincial Parks in British Columbia frei zugänglich.

Anschließend fahren wir weiter nach Nanaimo auf den Westwood Lake Campground, etwa 100 m entfernt vom Westwood Lake. Hier ist es wesentlich wärmer, und am kleinen Strand des Sees ist Hochbetrieb. Um den See führt ein 6 km langer Weg, den wir am frühen Abend mit dem Fahrrad fahren.

11. Juli: Wir machen Halt in Chemainus, das für seine bemalten Hauswände bekannt ist. Damit man sie möglichst alle auf einem Rundgang sieht, kann man einer auf der Straße aufgemalten Fußspur folgen. Auch sonst ist das Ortszentrum sehr hübsch.

Am frühen Nachmittag kommen wir bei Doug und Sue in Cobble Hill südlich von Duncan an.

Back at the east coast of Vancouver Island

July 10: We return to the east coast of Vancouver Island. In Parksville we once again visit Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, where we only had gone with the bicycles for a while a few days ago. We spend some time on the beach walking, sitting on a bench and enjoy the typical sea weather with sunshine, 21 degrees C (70 F) and a cool breeze from the sea. Other than the US state parks that collect fees from visitors the provincial parks in British Columbia are accessible free of charge.

Later we go to Nanaimo and stay on Westwood Lake Campground, about 100 m (110 yards) away from Westwood Lake. It is much warmer here, and the small beach on the lake is very busy. A 6 km (4 mi) trail leads around the lake, and early in the evening we do it on our bicycles.

July 11: We stop at Chemainus, known for its colorfully painted murals. To see them all on one round, one can follow footsteps painted on the pavement. All in all the village center is looking nice.

Early in the afternoon we arrive at Doug and Sue's place in Cobble Hill south of Duncan.

Im Pacific Rim Nationalpark

Heute nehmen wir die Strecke zwischen Ucluelet und Tofino in Angriff. Das ist zwar nur eine Entfernung von 39 km, aber wir können leicht den ganzen Tag damit verbringen. Zwischen den beiden Orten durchquert die Straße den Pacific Rim Nationalpark. Entlang der Straße sind einige Parkplätze, von denen entweder Rundwege abgehen oder Wege zum Strand.

Vom ersten Parkplatz aus gehen wir zwei Rundwege von je 1 km auf Stegen durch dichten und (abgesehen vom Steg) unberührten Regenwald (Rainforest Trail). Es ist wirklich beeindruckend.

Der nächste Parkplatz liegt direkt am Strand (Long Beach). Bei hohen Wellen und auflaufender Flut sind hier zahlreiche Surfer zu sehen.

Der nächste Weg (Combers Beach Trail) führt über 500 m über einen Steg ebenfalls durch den Regenwald hinab zum Strand.

Der folgende Schooner Trail verläuft ebenfalls über einen Steg mit vielen Treppen durch den Wald hinab zum sehenswerten Strand Schooners Cove, wo sich meterhoch die angeschwemmten Baumstämme auftürmen.

Danach quälen wir uns mehrere hundert Meter über eine extrem schlechte Straße hoch zum Aussichtspunkt Radar Hill. Und wir sehen … nichts. Der Aussichtspunkt ist längst rundum zugewachsen mit hohen Bäumen.

Tofino … hmm. Weil es der Endpunkt der Straße ist, muss man da wohl mal gewesen sein, aber sonst ... Entlang der Straße ziehen sich wenige Motels, Lokale und Läden hin, darunter unendlich viele Surfshops, und es gibt zahlreiche Angebote für Bootstouren (u.a. Whale Watching). Wenn man nicht gerade Surfer, Hochseefischer oder sonstiger Wassersportler ist, könnte man sich eigentlich die letzten Kilometer sparen. Aber das ist natürlich Geschmackssache.

Am Abend kehren wir zu unserem Ucluelet Campground zurück. Wir hatten es sowieso vor, weil es zeitlich passte, außerdem haben wir heute morgen einen Zettel bekommen, dass es für die zweite Nacht $10 Rabatt gibt und haben verlängert.

In the Pacific Rim National Park

Today we proceed to the route between Ucluelet and Tofino. It is only a 39 km (24 mi) distance, but we can easily spend all day there. Between the two villages the road cuts across Pacific Rim National Park. There are some parking lots along the road where either loops start or trails to the beach.

From the first parking lot we hike two trails of 1 km each (0.6 mi) on a boardwalk through dense and untouched (except the boardwalk) rainforest (Rainforest Trail). It is really impressing.

The next parking lot is located right on the beach (Long Beach). In high waves of the high tide here a lot of surfers are to be seen.

The next trail (Combers Beach Trail) leads 500 m (0.3 mi) on a boardwalk through the rainforest down to the beach.

The following Schooner Trail also runs on a boardwalk with lots of stairs through the forest down to the worth seeing beach Schooner Cove, where the logs are washed ashore and piled up high.

Afterwards we struggle up a hill on an extremly bad road to the view point Radar Hill. And we see … nothing. The view point is long grown over with high trees.

Tofino ... hmmm. As it is the end of the road, one probably must have been there, but otherwise … Along the road a few motels, bars and shops are extending, among them endlessly many surf shops, and there are several offers for boat tours (like whale watching). If one is not a surfer, angler or water sportsman, one could save the last kilometers. But this is of course a matter of taste.

In the evening we return to our Ucluelet campground. We had been planning it anyway, but in the morning we got a note that they give a $10 discount for the second night so we extended our stay.

Von Nanaimo nach Ucluelet

Drei Dinge fallen dem Reisenden zunächst auf der Insel auf: Das Benzin ($1,349 pro Liter) ist teuer (das war es auch schon in Vancouver; noch in Mission wäre es 9 Cent pro Liter billiger gewesen), es ist deutlich kühler als auf dem Festland (vor allem auf der Westseite) und es ist schwieriger, Wlan zu finden; die libraries etwa haben am Wochenende geschlossen.

Auf dem Weg quer über die Insel gibt es zwei Hauptattraktionen zwischen Parksville und Port Alberni. Die erste ist der Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, wo der Little Qualicum River mit mehreren Fällen durch einen engen Canyon schießt. Vom Parkplatz aus gehen wir einen halbstündigen Rundweg, der auf beiden Seiten am Rand des Canyons entlang führt.

Etwas weiter östlich kommt Cathedral Grove innerhalb des MacMillan Provincial Park, ein kleines unberührtes Gebiet mit bis zu 800 Jahre alten und bis zu 75 m hohen Douglas-Tannen. Es gibt einen kleinen Parkplatz an der Hauptstraße und kurze Rundwege auf beiden Seiten der Straße.

Die Strecke zwischen Port Alberni und Ucluelet ist 90 km lang ohne irgendwelche Zeichen menschlicher Besiedlung. Die Straße führt bergauf und bergab zwischen hohen Bergen und oft durch dichten Wald, auf dem letzten Stück sehr kurvenreich, steil und eng.

In Ucluelet finden wir einen Platz auf dem Ucluelet Campground ($39,20 für einen “non service“-Platz; sie haben auch full hook-ups für $46), direkt am Ortseingang. Wieder einmal nutzen wir unsere Fahrräder für eine kleine Erkundungstour. Nun, wir haben einen Ortsplan bekommen von der Visitor Information an der Ecke, wo die Straße nach Ucluelet abzweigt, aber die vielen steilen Hügel sieht man darauf leider nicht. Am südöstlichen Ende des Ortes stoßen wir schließlich auf den Wild Pacific Rim Trail, wow. Es ist ein Rundweg, der am Parkplatz in der Nähe des Leuchtturms beginnt. Wir gehen ihn ein Stück hin und zurück, und das lohnt sich wirklich.

From Nanaimo to Ucluelet

On the way across the island there are two main attractions between Parksville and Port Alberni. The first one is the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, where the Little Qualicum River runs through a narrow canyon with several falls. From the parking lot we take a 30 minutes loop that on both sides runs along the rim of the canyon.

A little further east comes Cathedral Grove within MacMillan Provincial Park, a small untouched area with firs up to 800 years old and a hight of up to 75 m (83 yards). There is a small parking lot on the main road with short loops on both sides of the road.

The distance between Port Alberni and Ucluelet is 90 km (56 mi) without any signs of human settlement. The road leads up and down between high mountains and often through dense forest, in the last part very winding, steep, and narrow.

In Ucluelet we find a site at Ucluelet Campground ($39,20 for a non service site; they also have full hook-ups for $46), right at the village entrance. Once again we take our bicycles for a tour around town. Well, we got a map from the visitor information at the corner where the road to Ucluelet branches off, but it unfortunately does not show the many steep hills !

At the southeastern end of the village we finally come across the Wild Pacific Rim Trail, wow. It is a loop starting at a parking lot close to the lighthouse. We walk it for a while back and forth, and it is really worth doing that.

Mit der Fähre nach Vancouver Island

Es gibt verschiedene Fähren zwischen dem Festland und Vancouver Island. Wir haben die von Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) nach Nanaimo ausgesucht, weil wir zuerst hinüber zur Westküste fahren wollen.

Bis zur Fähre haben wir nur noch wenig mehr als eine Stunde zu fahren, deshalb beeilen wir uns am Morgen nicht zu sehr. Aber vielleicht hätten wir vorher mal nach dem Fahrplan sehen sollen, denn als wir ankommen, ist eine Fähre gerade 20 Minuten weg und die nächste fährt erst in zwei Stunden. Die einfache Fahrt kostet $136 (der Wagen 100, zwei Personen 30 plus 6 Treibstoffzuschlag) und die Überfahrt dauert 90 Minuten.

Da wir am Nachmittag nicht mehr so weit fahren wollen, steuern wir von Nanaimo aus den ersten Provincial Park in Richtung Norden an, Rathtrevor Beach P.P. in Parksville. Wie fast erwartet ist der Campingplatz voll, aber sie haben einen overflow (Ausweichplatz). Das ist ein Parkplatz mitten im Wald mit absolut sonst nichts, über 500 m vom campground entfernt, aber er kostet trotzdem ebenfalls $30.

Da gehen wir lieber auf den kleinen privaten Campingplatz 300m weiter an der Straße, zahlen zwei Dollar mehr, haben einen Stellplatz mit Strom und Wasser und alles andere nur über die Wiese sowie einen kleinen Fluss direkt hinter uns. Und am Abend fahren wir mit den Fahrrädern durch einen kleinen Seiteneingang in den Park, fahren dort am Strand entlang und sind froh, nicht auf dem Park-Camping auf einem der weit zurück mitten im dunklen Wald gelegenen Stellplätze zu stehen.

With the ferry to Vancouver Island

There are several ferries between the mainland and Vancouver Island. We choose the one from Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to Nanaimo because we first want to go over to the west coast.

We only have little over one hour drive left to the ferry so we do not hurry too much in the morning. But maybe we should have looked for the ferry schedule before, because on our arrival one has left 20 minutes before and the next one is due in two hours. The tickets are $136 one way (the motorhome 100, two people 30 plus 6 fuel surcharge), and the passage takes 90 minutes.

As we do not want to drive far in the afternoon from Nanaimo we head to the first provincial park northbound, Rathtrevor Beach P.P. in Parksville. As almost expected the campground is full, but they have an overflow. This overflow is a parking lot in the middle of the forest with nothing at all, one third of a mile away from the campground, but they charge $30 anyway.

So we rather go to the small private campground one quarter mile down the road, pay two dollars more and have an electric and water site, everything else across the lawn and a small river right behind us. And in the evening we take the bicycles, enter the park through a small side entrance, ride along the beach and are glad we are not in the park campground on one of the secluded sites back in the dark woods.

Coquihalla Canyon und weiter

6. Juli: Nach zwei Tagen trennen wir uns nur schwer von unserem sonnigen Platz am Wasser. Nach noch einmal Schwimmen und Sonnen geht es erst im Lauf des Morgens weiter in Richtung Westen. Der landschaftlich schönste Teil des Wegs liegt zwischen Osoyoos und Keremeos.

Die weitere Strecke von Princeton nach Hope führt über 130 km fast ständig kurvenreich steil bergauf und bergab. Es bieten sich viele Ausblicke (aber ohne Haltemöglichkeit), aber irgendwann ist es für den Fahrer kein reines Vergnügen mehr.

In Hope besuchen wir den Coquihalla Canyon. Nach ein paar Minuten Fußweg erreichen wir die Othello Tunnels. Hier in Hope beginnt die Strecke der Kettle Valley Railway; auf einem Teilstück hatten wir schon in Kelowna eine Radtour gemacht. Schon zu Beginn führt die Strecke durch fünf Tunnels und über mehrere Brücken mitten durch den Canyon, hoch über dem reißenden Wasser.

In Harrison Hot Springs steuern wir am (Freitag)Nachmittag den Sasquatch Provincial Park mit drei Campingplätzen an. Alle campgrounds sind voll; auch die privaten Plätze in Harrison Hot Springs sind voll. Der nächste Platz im Kilby Provincial Park ist geschlossen (wahrscheinlich wegen Hochwassers, da er direkt am Fluss liegt). Über Mission fahren wir weiter nach Maple Ridge zum Golden Ears Provincial Park, der hat 3 Campingplätze mit über 400 Stellplätzen. Und sie sind alle voll.

Wir denken schon über einen Parkplatz an einem Walmart oder an der Fähre nach Vancouver Island nach, da finden wir an der Zufahrtstraße zum Golden Ears Park den Maple Ridge RV Park. Ein Platz auf einer Wiese, von hohen Bäumen umgeben, Duschen und Toiletten, full hook up und Wlan, das Ganze für $28.

Bisher haben wir fast immer State (bzw. County/City) Parks oder in Kanada Provincial Parks zur Übernachtung aufgesucht, aber in British Columbia kommen uns starke Zweifel, ob das immer das Richtige ist. Oft sind die Parks im dichten Wald mit wenig Licht, haben nichts als ein Plumpsklo und kosten $21 oder $30. Da bieten manche private Plätze mehr für das gleiche Geld, wenn man nicht einen unmittelbar an der Straße nimmt.

Coquihalla Canyon and moving on

July 6: After two days we leave reluctantly from our sunny site by the water. After once again swimming and sunning only later in the morning we continue our trip westbound. The most scenic part of the route is between Osoyoos and Keremeos.

The road from Princeton to Hope is leading most of the time steeply uphill and downhill with lots of turns. There are lots of views, but no possibility to stop there, and after a while it is no real fun for the driver anymore.

In Hope we visit Coquihalla Canyon. After a few minutes walk we arrive at the Othello Tunnels. Here in Hope the Kettle Valley Railway starts; on a part of the track we had gone on a bicycle ride in Kelowna. At the start already the track leads through five tunnels and over several bridges through the canyon high above the rapid water.

In Harrison Hot Springs in the afternoon (on Friday) we head to Sasquatch Provincial Park with three campgrounds. They are all full; even the private campgrounds in Harrison Hot Springs are full. The next campground at Kilby Provincial Park is closed (probably due to flooding, as it is located right on the river). Via Mission we head on to Golden Ears Provincial Park in Maple Ridge; it has three campgrounds with more than 400 sites. And they are all full.

We already start thinking about a parking lot at a Walmart or at the ferry to Vancouver Island, but then on the access road to the Golden Ears Park we find the Maple Ridge RV Park. A campground on a meadow, surrounded by large trees, showers and toilets, full hook up and Wifi, and all that for $28.

So far we always stayed overnight in State (County/City) Parks or in Canada in Provincial Parks, but in British Columbia we have doubts if that is the right thing to do. Often the parks are located in dense forest with little light, have nothing but a pit toilet and cost $21 or 30. Some private campgrounds offer more for the same money, when one does not chose one directly by the road.

Sonne, Obst und Osoyoos

Tatsächlich, es scheint auch in B.C. noch so etwas wie einen Sommer zu geben. Heute sind endlich nur ein paar weiße Wolken am Himmel, die Sonne scheint den ganzen Tag und die Temperatur klettert auf unglaubliche 23 Grad C.

Wir können nicht widerstehen; die vier Pfund Erdbeeren von vorgestern sind schon weg und wir kommen morgens daran vorbei. Also pflücken wir noch einmal Erdbeeren. Dann geht es weiter in Richtung Osoyoos. Eine äußerst lohnende Strecke in überwiegend sehenswerter Landschaft. Das breite Tal entlang der Seen ist voller Obstbäume und Wein. Irgendwie erinnert uns das an Südfrankreich.

Unterwegs kommen wir an zahlreichen Campingplätzen vorbei, die unmittelbar an der lauten Straße liegen. Das bestätigt uns in der Abneigung, irgendwo etwas zu reservieren, wenn wir den Platz nicht kennen.

Das Bücken beim Erdbeerpflücken erfordert einen körperlichen Ausgleich. Rd. 3 km vor Oliver kommen wir an einem Schild vorbei “U-Pick cherries“, das Pfund für einen Dollar. Die Bäume hängen voll mit süßen Kirschen. In kürzester Zeit haben wir vier Pfund gepflückt und dabei noch einmal etwa zwei Pfund gegessen.

Osoyoos liegt schön am See; hier herrscht irgendwie Urlaubsatmosphäre. Wir fahren langsam an der Ostseite des Sees entlang, wo fünf der sechs Campingplätze liegen. Dort stehen die Wagen dicht gedrängt, auf der anderen Straßenseite ist jeweils ein ganz kleiner Strand, und das für über $50. Das gefällt uns überhaupt nicht.

Wir fahren zum Haynes Point Provincial Park, ein Campground, der in toller Lage als Landzunge in den Osoyoos Lake hineinragt. Die 41 Plätze sind den ganzen Sommer durch Reservierungen belegt (kein Wunder), aber wir wollen ihn kurz ansehen. Zu unserer Überraschung gibt es im Park unmittelbar vor den 41 Plätzen am rechten Rand der kurzen Zufahrtstraße auf der schmalen Landzunge einen breiten Kiesstreifen, der als “Overflow“ genutzt wird. Hier können wir bleiben. Der Standort ist besser als viele der “offiziellen“ Plätze, die rundum zugewachsen sind. Zwar haben wir keinen Picknicktisch, dafür können wir bis mittags rechts am Wasser in der Sonne sitzen und ab dem Nachmittag links am Wasser und in der Sonne. Der Preis ist mit $30 der gleiche wie auf den sites. Am frühen Abend fahren wir noch einmal mit Fahrrädern die 3 km in den Ort.

Quer über den See verläuft die Grenze Kanada-USA. Heute ist der 4. Juli, der US-Nationalfeiertag. Nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit können wir in 2-3 km Entfernung über den See hinweg ein großes Feuerwerk beobachten.

Sun, fruits and Osoyoos

Well, there actually seems to be something like a summer in B.C., too. Today finally there are only a few white clouds in the sky, the sun is shining all day and the temperature climbs to unbelievable 23 degrees C (74 F).

We cannot resist. The four pounds of strawberries from the day before yesterday are long gone and we drive past anyway in the morning. So we pick strawberries once again. Then we continue on our way to Osoyoos on a worthwhile route in mostly remarkable scenery. The wide valley along the lakes is full of fruit trees and vines. Somehow this reminds us of southern France.

On our way we pass a lot of campgrounds that are located right by the noisy road. That confirms our aversion to make a reservation without knowing the campground.

Bending down at picking strawberries requires a compensation for the body. About 3 km (2 mi) before Oliver we pass a sign “U pick cherries“, one dollar a pound. The trees are full with sweet cherries. In the shortest time we have picked four pounds and eaten another two pounds.

Osoyoos is located very nicely on the lake; somehow here is a vacation atmosphere. We slowly drive along the eastern shore of the lake, where five of the six campgrounds are located. Each of them is packed with Rvs and there is a small beach on the opposite side of the road, all this for more than $50. We do not like it at all.

We go to Haynes Point Provincial Park, a campground that in a perfect location that reaches into Osoyoos Lake on a peninsula. The 41 sites are occupied by reservations all summer (no wonder), but we want to have a look anyway. To our surprise in the park there is a wide gravel strip by the short access road just before the campsites that is used as an overflow. Here we can stay. This location is better than a lot of the “official“ sites that are overgrown all around. We do not have a table, but we can sit in the sun by the water on the right the first half of the day and on the left the second half. The fee ($30) is the same as on the sites. Late in the afternoon we take the bicycles for a 3 km (2 mi) ride into the village.

Across the lake runs the Canada-US border. Today is July 4, the US national day. After nightfall we can watch big fireworks in a 2 to 3 km (1 to 2 mi) distance across the lake.

Gestern gab es wieder eine Absage, wir nehmen das Angebot an, einen weiteren Tag auf der Farm zu bleiben. Leslie betreibt die Farm fast allein, nur mit Teilzeithelfern, ihr Mann arbeitet in der Stadt. Es gibt Eier von über hundert frei laufenden Hühnern, Blumen und etwas Obst und Gemüse, und natürlich den RV-Platz.

Morgens fahren wir erst einmal zu einer RV- und Truck-Waschanlage. Nach vier Wochen und zwei nassen Schotterstraßen ist die untere Hälfte des Wagens und das gesamte Heck verdreckt. Die Anlage läuft nicht mit Münzen, sondern wird freigeschaltet und man zahlt anschließend pro Minute ($0,85). Das ist natürlich eine sportliche Herausforderung. Ich flitze mit Spritzpistole und Schaumbürste um den Wagen herum und schaffe es in unter acht Minuten.

Dann fahren wir mit Fahrrädern im Bereich der Stadt am Okanagan Lake entlang. Es ist stürmisch und kühl, aber es regnet nicht. Die tollen Häuser entlang der Abbott Street, der City Park, die Marina etc etc., alles sehr großzügig angelegt und schön.

Am Nachmittag lässt sich sogar die Sonne mal blicken und die Temperatur erreicht für kurze Zeit fast 20 Grad. Wir können eine Weile windgeschützt neben dem Wagen draußen sitzen.

Another day in Kelowna

There was again a cancellation yesterday and we accept the offer to stay another day at the farm. Leslie runs the farm almost on her own, with part time hands only, her husband is working in town. They have eggs from more than hundred free-running hens, flowers, some fruits and vegetables, and of course the RV park.

In the morning we first drive to an RV and truck wash. After four weeks and two wet gravel roads the lower half and the complete back of the motorhome is quite dirty. The unit does not operate on coins, but has to be activated and afterwards has to be paid by the minute ($0,85). That of course is a challenge. I dash around the motorhome with water gun and foam brush and make it in under eight minutes.

Then we take the bicycles along Okanagan Lake in the downtown area. It is stormy and chilly, but it does not rain. The great houses along Abbot Street, the City Park, the Marina and so on, all laid out very lavishly and very nice.

In the afternoon even the sun shows up and the temperature for a short time almost hits the 20 degree C (68 F) mark. Protected from the wind we can sit outside for a while.

2. Juli: Heute machen wir einen großen Fortschritt beim Wetter: Der Himmel ist zwar gleichmäßig grau, aber es regnet keinen Tropfen !

Endlich geht es weiter, unser Ziel heute ist Kelowna. Kurz hinter Sicamous stockt der geringe Verkehr; mit schwerem Gerät wird auf der Straße und auf beiden Seiten Geröll bewegt. Hier ist wohl eine Gerölllawine herunter gekommen. Auf einem Parkplatz neben der Straße ist über ein Dutzend Autos teilweise bis zu den Scheiben begraben.

Vor Vernon ändert sich die Landschaft. Die Berge werden niedriger und im breiten Okanagan-Tal ist viel Obstanbau zu sehen. In Kelowna halten wir an einem großen Schild „U-Pick“, hier kann man selbst Erdbeeren pflücken. Schon nach knapp fünfzehn Minuten haben wir 1,5 kg, so dicht und reif hängen die Beeren an den Stauden.

Wie wir vorher im Internet gesehen haben, sind Campingplätze um Kelowna im Juli recht teuer und meist voll belegt. Einer gefiel uns gut, auf einer Farm außerhalb mit nur zehn Plätzen, aber bei einem Anruf am Vortag erhielten wir leider eine Absage. Da wir in der Nähe sind, schauen wir ihn uns trotzdem an. Und wir können eine Nacht bleiben, da morgens jemand abgesagt hatte. Es ist der Canyon Farms RV Park, ein purer Luxusplatz, zehn liebevoll gestaltete, riesige Stellplätze völlig ruhig mitten im Grünen (und hervorragendes Wlan).

Nur zwei Kilometer entfernt (McCulloch Road) führt eine 8 km lange enge steile Schotterstraße hinauf zum Myra Canyon, dem spektakulärsten 6 km langen Abschnitt eines Radwegs über die stillgelegte Strecke der Kettle Valley Railway. Die enge Trasse führt auf diesem Teilstück über 18 Holzbrücken und durch zwei Tunnels. Mit vielen Fotopausen brauchen wir zwei Stunden für die 2 mal 6 km.

July 2^nd: Today we make a big progress with the weather: the sky is equally grey, but it does not rain one drop !

Finally we move on, our destination today is Kelowna. Behind Sicamous the light traffic slows down; with heavy equipment debris on the road and on both sides is moved. Here a rock avalanche must have come down. On a parking lot by the road more than a dozen cars are buried up to the windows.

Before Vernon the scenery changes. The mountains are lower and in the wide Okanagan valley a lot of fruit cultivation can be seen. In Kelowna we stop at a big sign “U-Pick“, here we can pick strawberries. After barely fifteen minutes we have three pounds, so thick and ripe the berries are hanging on the shrubs.

We had seen on the internet before that campgrounds around Kelowna in July are expensive and mostly full. We liked one on a farm outside town with only ten sites, but when we called the day before we got a negative reply. As we are nearby we want to take a look anyway. And we can stay for a night as someone had canceled in the morning. It is Canyon Farms RV Park, a pure luxury campground, ten affectionately designed huge sites completely quiet in the countryside (and with excellent Wifi).

Only two km (1 ¼ mi) away a steep winding gravel road (8 km/5 mi) leads up to Myra Canyon, the most spectacular 6 km (4 mi) part of a bicycle path leading along the abandoned Kettle Valley Railway track. In this section the narrow path leads over 18 wooden trestle bridges and through two tunnels. Including lots of photo stops we need two hours for the 12 km (back and forth).

29. Juni: Am Mittag spielen wir eine Runde Golf auf dem sehr schönen Platz des Revelstoke Golf Club, die wir am Vortag im Internet zu einem Discountpreis gebucht hatten. Es hat die ganze Nacht und am Vormittag geregnet, aber zum Glück hört es auf, als wir anfangen.

30. Juni: Heute mal wieder Dauerregen bei maximal 13 Grad C :-((

Wir verbringen den ganzen Tag im motorhome.

1. Juli, Canada Day, kanadischer Nationalfeiertag. Am Vormittag hört der Regen auf, daher wagen wir es mittags, mit dem Fahrrad in den Ort zu fahren. In einem Park wird gefeiert: eine riesige Torte, von der jeder ein Stück bekommt, eine Band spielt, Kinderbelustigung aller Art etc.

June 29: At noon we play a round of golf on the very nice course of the Revelstoke Golf Club, that we had booked the day before on “Golf Now“ at a special rate. It has rained all night and morning, but luckily the rain stops when we start.

June 30: Steady rain again all day at a maximum of 13 degrees C (55 F). We spend all day in the motorhome.

July 1^st, Canada Day, the Canadian national holiday. Late in the morning the rain stops, so we dare to ride the bicycles down to the village. In a park there is a party: a huge cake, of which everybody gets a piece, a band is playing, games for kids et cetera.

Wir bleiben ein paar Tage in Revelstoke

Vor uns liegt ein langes Wochenende, denn der 1. Juli ist der kanadische Nationalfeiertag, und er wird wie in den USA auf den Montag verschoben, wenn er auf ein Wochenende fällt. Dann ist wirklich jeder unterwegs. Heute morgen habe ich telefonisch und online vergeblich versucht, an unserem nächsten Ziel einen Platz für das Wochenende zu bekommen (wir hatten es uns schon gedacht).

Unser derzeitiger campground gefällt uns, er hat Wlan und wir sitzen endlich mal wieder in der warmen Sonne (am Nachmittag 25 Grad C). Hier waren für das Wochenende gerade noch zwei Plätze frei, so dass wir uns sofort einen gesichert haben. Wir bleiben einfach bis Montag hier und machen vier Tage Urlaub.

We stay in Revelstoke for the weekend

We have a long weekend ahead of us, because July 1^st is the Canadian national day, and like in the US it is observed on Monday when it falls on a weekend. Then virtually everybody is on the road. This morning I tried unsuccessfully by phone and online to get a site for the weekend at our next destination (as we had already guessed).

We like our actual campground, it has Wifi, and we finally have the warm sun (25 C / 77 F this afternoon). Here there were only two open campsites left for the weekend, so we grabbed one of them. We simply stay here and take a four days vacation. For tomorrow I booked a round of golf at the Revelstoke Golf Club (a teetime special on Golf Now, like in FL).

Icefields Parkway und Änderung des Reiseplans

27. Juni: Nach fünf Tagen Kälte, Regen und Nebel haben wir die Nase voll. Und der Wetterbericht für die nächsten Tage ist auch nur wenig besser. Und eigentlich haben wir nach Custer, Yellowstone, Glacier und Banff genug Berge gesehen. Daher ändern wir unseren Reiseplan und verzichten auf Jasper und die Strecke über den Wells Grey Provincial Park.

Wir haben schon vorher davon gelesen, und ein kanadischer Nachbar in Banff erzählt viel Positives darüber. Wir wollen in das Okanagan Valley, das sich südwestlich von uns zur US-Grenze erstreckt und manchmal das “Tessin Kanadas“ genannt wird.

Aber den Icefields Parkway von Lake Louise nach Norden fahren wir natürlich auf jeden Fall. In der Nacht hat der Dauerregen aufgehört, und bei 4 Grad C starten wir um 7 Uhr. Leider wird das Wetter hinter Lake Louise wieder schlechter, dichte Wolken und immer wieder Nieselregen. Am Peyto Lake gehen wir vom Parkplatz 10 Minuten durch Schneereste zum tollen Aussichtspunkt.

Auch danach lohnt es sich immer wieder (trotz des Wetters), an Halteplätzen und Aussichtspunkten anzuhalten.

Das Columbia Icefield ist die Hauptattraktion der Strecke. Gegenüber dem Visitor Center geht es zu einem kleinen Parkplatz, von dem aus wir bis an den Rand des Gletschers hochgehen können. Das Thermometer zeigt 5 Grad C, aber der eisige Wind ist ganz erheblich kälter. Am Rand entlang führt eine nur für Busse geöffnete Straße ein paar Hundert Meter weiter hoch, wo die großen roten Spezialbusse die Touristenmassen quer auf den Gletscher fahren und sie dort kurz aussteigen lassen ($50). Darauf können wir gut verzichten. Auch sonst finden wir andere Stellen entlang des Icefields Parkway attraktiver als diese. Vielleicht liegt es ja am Wetter.

Wir fahren zurück nach Lake Louise; unterwegs halten wir noch mehrmals, denn von dieser Seite aus sieht manches wieder anders aus.

Auch zum Peyto-Lake-Aussichtspunkt gehen wir noch einmal hoch. In Lake Louise biegen wir nach Westen auf den Trans Canada Highway ab.

Am Nachmittag landen wir in Revelstoke auf einem sehr schönen kleinen campground am Wasser (Williamson Lake CG). Die Sonne scheint, und bei 20 Grad C sitzen wir draussen !!!

Icefields Parkway and change of plans

June 27: After five days we are fed up with cold, rain and fog. And the weather forecast for the next days is hardly better. And actually after Custer, Yellowstone, Glacier and Banff we have seen enough mountains. So we change our travel plans and quit Jasper and the route via Wells Grey Provincial Park.

We read about it before, and a Canadian neighbour in Banff tells a lot of positive things about it. We want to go to the Okanagan Valley, that southeast of us leads to the US border and sometimes is called the Canadian Tessin.

But of course we drive the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise nortbound. Overnight the steady rain ended, and at 4 degrees C (40 F) we start at 7 am. Unfortunately the weather gets worse again behind Lake Louise, thick clouds and repeatedly drizzle. At Peyto Lake we walk from the parking lot ten minutes through snow residues to the terrific view point.

Afterwards, too, it is always worthwhile (despite the weather) to stop at halts and view points.

The Columbia Icefield is the main attraction of the route. Opposite the visitor center a road leads to a small parking lot, from where we can climb up to the edge of the glacier. The thermometer shows 5 degrees C (42 F), but the icy breeze is considerably colder.

Along the side a road open only for buses leads a few hundred yards further up, from where the big red special buses take the tourists a little further on the glacier and let them step out for a short time ($50). We can easily pass on that. Generally we find other spots along the Icefields Parkway more attractive than this one. Maybe that is due to the weather.

We return to Lake Louise; on the way we stop several times, as from this side a lot of things look different.

We even climb to the Peyto Lake view point once again. In Lake Louise we turn and take the Trans Canadian Highway westbound.

In the afternoon we end up on a very nice small campground on the water in Revelstoke (Williamson Lake campground). The sun is shining, and at 20 degrees C (68 F) we are sitting outside !!!
