Based on the information from my contact who attended Dolpa 27, Rise and Cirno were actually sold out a little bit ahead Sakuya and based on unofficial counting, Volks actually made more Dollfie Dream available at the event compared to HTDP Kyoto 9, although it is unclear if that will translate into more DDs available for the After Event lottery.  I knew I couldn’t wait or leave it up to chances (since Sakuya is a “must have” DD for me, so I went ahead with the Auction route.  Thanks to the lighting fast reaction from my deputy service, Sakuya has arrived from Japan within merely six days!  So, for the past couple of days, I have been wanting to get this introduction post ready as soon as possible, along with a grand plan that I have been scheming to bring Airy, Neris and Sakuya together for a photo shoot; however, if I were to go through with that, it will probably take me a few weeks before I can finish a photo set that I am truly happy with, so after thinking it through for a few days, I have decided to go through with the introduction post first for those of you who would like to see more reference photos before the DP27 After Event lottery on the 18th.  Ok, enough talks already, allow me to go through the unboxing and introduce my youngest Dollfie Dream daughter Sakuya from Shining Blade!

Sakuya comes in with a silver slider box instead of the traditional yellow box, most probably because of the addition of her Katana.

Here is a size comparison with Saber Lily’s slider box.

With a cutout Volks logo on the side, which from my understanding, is a design inspired by Super Dollfie Dream slider boxes.

While Sakuya’s dress is not lined white but at least no black threads were used since most of the staining usually come from the threads, not necessarily the lining.  And I am happy to report that after 5 days, I have yet to observe any staining on Sakuya, although your situation might varies.

There are two pairs of gloves, one set for 06 gripping hands, another set for 01 regular hands (not included).

I’m not afraid to admit the panties caught my attention instantly…..

After I was done with the inspection, I moved onto one of my biggest concerns, and that is whether I have the proper tool to pierce Sakuya’s ears for her earrings since Volks has stated that we have to do this ourselves, so I am going to cover that in a little bit more details here.

Based on my measurement, the diameter of the earring stud is 0.75mm which is about 0.029″, so I was planning to use a 1/32 drill; however, after a more thorough inspection, I noticed the stud isn’t quite long enough to pierce through the ears for the clutch lock of the earring and therefore there is no real easy way to lock the earrings in place …. so I ended up using a drill that is slightly undersized 0.028″ diameter so the stud will always have a tight fit against the vinyl.  Since the vinyl is a very soft material, the actual drilling process doesn’t remove much material at all, it actually pushed the vinyl away so it creates a pathway for the stud to go through.

While you can do it pretty much anyway you wanted to but I recommend against using any sort of power tools, because it can do more harm than good before you know it.  The tool you want to use to pierce the vinyl is called a pin vise, which is basically a hand drill which you can buy from most hobby supply stores.  The red arrow is pointing to a dimple mark that’s already on the head so you can just aim for that without having to worry about making it symmetrical yourself.

It doesn’t take much force to drill thru the vinyl, so don’t try to turn too hard or fast, slow and steady and making sure it’s straight is the priority here.

Backing the drill out, the hole is barely visible from here since the drilling process mostly pushed the vinyl away rather than removing material.

After piercing both ears, push the stud through the holes you just drill and it will look like this~

In my last DD introduction post, I briefly talked about the proper ways to handle the knee joints of a DDIII, this time I want to talk about the techniques to apply a Dollfie headcap (for those of you who might be interested).

Since Sakuya’s wig cap is black inside so in order to prevent or minimize staining on her head, it is best to apply a Dollfie headcap which you can buy from Volks store.  First put the head cap on the head just above the ears like this.

Then lay the wig over the headcap, and you will notice the head cap appear to be oversized and doesn’t look like it fit perfectly but that’s ok.  The red arrow is pointing to the oversized headcap.

Since the oversized headcap is going to prevent the wig from sliding down smoothly, use a tool to feed the headcap underneath the wig cap.

After sliding the wig down as far as you can by grabbing/pull the edge of the wig cap (do not grab the ponytail or you might break it), you will notice the headcap is still bigger than the wig, apply the same technique to feed the head cap under the wig cap as before.

After feeding the headcap under the wigcap, it is barely visible from the outside.

Alright, enough with the talking, time for some photo sharing!

Those of you who follows my twitter and flickr stream have probably seen this already from last week~ I’m at lost for words!  Sakuya has such an elegant and pretty face but at the same time carries a more serious expression than most of my other DD girls~

Having said that, it is even more difficult to resist her sexy charm…. especially in situation like this *nosebleed*

And BAM!  Sakuya is ready for battle~ as the female commander of Valeria Liberation Front!  Personally I think Volks did a fairly good job with expressing Sakuya’s character in her face sculpt, a significant improvement over their previous attempts on Airy and Neris, in my opinion.

Based on my own assessment so far, I think Sakuya is quite versatile and definitely in the front of the pack among my DD girls.

Initially, I was a little concerned on how the dress would look like; but I got to give it to Volks, they did a very fine job in recreating Sakuya’s Noir combat dress, excellent implementation….

As an after thought, the fact that Volks did not release Sakuya back in DP25 was probably a good move since it is obvious that Sakuya is better represented as a DDIII with the improved articulation and poseability.

While I would very much like to continue with the photo shoot but instead of rushing it through, I would rather spend more with it and make sure I am doing the best I can possibly do for Sakuya’s first solo photo shoot.  And on top of that, a group photo between Airy, Neris and Sakuya is also in the plan, please look forward to it!  Thank you for reading~

In the following months before the arrival of the new Sabers, it had become clear to me that the setup I had been using to take Dollfie Dream photo was woefully inadequate to handle the addition of Saber Nero and Saber Alter II into the team.  So, right around the end of last year, I began to take action to clear out some old figures that I no longer want to keep, upgraded many of the furniture and display cabinets that I have been using in an attempt to optimize my room toward a Dollfie Dream studio.  It wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago did I finally figured out a plan the new platform for large group photo.  There are still a lot of work left to be done but I am quite happy with the progress I have made so far.  So, without further ado, please allow me to introduce my very own Sehai Sentai Saber Rangers!  Obviously, this is a parody playing off the team of Sabers seeking the Holy Grails XD.

It was one of my main goals to take a group photo with all the Sabers decking out their original gear, but I have been postponing this until I am confident that I am doing the best I can.  While I still have a lot to learn and improve on but I am relatively happy with the result this time.  So, let’s go around and introduce each of the sentai members, shall we?

First we have their leader Blue Ranger – Saber (wearing her hair down).  Traditionally, Red Ranger has almost always been the leader of a Super Sentai, but I have been watching Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger which introduced the concept of each of the team members gaining and mastering the power of previous rangers (and changing their color at the same time)… so in the end, it doesn’t matter if Red ranger isn’t the leader anymore XDc

Then we our princess of the group, White Ranger Saber Lily ♥♥♥

Black Ranger Saber Alter~  Don’t underestimate this bokken XDc

Obviously, our main focus this time has got to be the additional of the two new members~

And last but not least….

Purple Ranger Saber Alter II~  Some of you might wonder, how come I am counting Saber Alter II like a separate team member?  Well if you look closely their hair styles are slightly different near the front bang and well, let just say Alter II is from α World Line so they are almost the same but not quite XD.

Now, you may wonder, just what can the Saber Rangers do after being adopted by me?  The answer is very simple XDc

Ahhh, finally I got done with this~  A huge load off my chest since I have been wanting to get this post out of the way first as there are plenty of other side photo project I have been working on are all waiting on the wings…. such as a “character cosplay” :3  On the other hand, we are literally one day away from the highly anticipated DP 27 and the release of Shining Blade Dollfie Dream, hopefully I will be able to secure a DD Sakuya as my next Dollfie Dream daughter XD

Originally, I was going to do this introduction post much earlier, but since my room was still in the midst of renovation and was not ready to do a proper photo shoot for them.  It took me quite some time before I figured out a new plan for a brand new photo stage but due some an unexpected family matter, I had to delay all activities until recently.  Alright, enough talking already, allow me to introduce the arrival of my Saber Nero and Saber Alter II already~

The new boxes that Saber Nero and Alter II come in are noticeably bigger than the original match box for Saber and Lily.  The main reason why these two new boxes had to be bigger has to do with Nero’s Aestus Estus.

Most of my default yellow boxes are folded flat already but these match box styles are so nice and they are very strong and useful in storing wig bags and the inserts from the yellow boxes.

First let’s take a look at unboxing Saber Nero~  Volks International always wrap a layer of bubble wrap on the DD before shipping them oversea, so nice

Just as I mentioned in the Saber Nero detail specification, we also get an additional pair of animetic eyes inspired by Takashi Takeuchi Sensei’s illustrations.

Do pay very close attention to the tip of the sword, since I have received one report of sword tip damage upon arrival by one Dollfie Dream comrade in Hong Kong.

Here is the wig~

Those of you who are handling a Dollfie Dream for the first time might find this useful since it’s not exactly the easiest thing to do to put a wig on a Dollfie Dream’s head properly.

Set the wig on the head like this.

Then pull the wig down where the arrow is pointing, it might take a few tries before getting it right .

Setting the wig properly is very important for the overall appeal of a Dollfie Dream and I always aim to have the wig just touch off the eyebrows.

While DDIII has come with a completely new skeleton structure with improved poseability over a DDII; however, the improved poseability comes with a new weakness.  When Volks add the new degree of motion and made the split of the knee less noticeable, they also made knee joint weaker and it is now possible to move the knee in a direction that allow you to break it much easier than while handling a DDII.  Here I am trying to illustrate a good and bad example of how to handle the knee joint.

Do not just grab the shin and bend the leg down!

Instead, grab the entire leg and move slowly until you can feel the joint is aligned properly before bending it.

Next, let’s inspect Nero’s default clothing, fortunately, everything is lined with white inward~

Because of the way the dress is designed, the arms would have be removed from the body first to put the short jacket on.  The rest is pretty self explanatory~

A closer look at Alter’s white skin body~

Here is a picture of Alter’s wig, this is consider very good already with relatively few loose hair strand, all I would do is to trim the loose one out.

I know more than a few of you have expressed concern about Alter’s dress would be prone to staining, especially to a white skin body…. here is what I would do to help minimize the risk of staining.

Based on how the dress is design, I find that wrapping the arms with food wrap like Glad would help insulate the arm from the sleeves since the short jacket completely cover the shoulder anyway.

Some people might say this is too troublesome to do, but for the sake of my DD daughters, this much work is necessary.  If someday I want Alter to take off her short jacket, I will just readjust the wrap so it only cover the sleeves.

I am happy to report that even after 1 month plus, I have yet to notice any staining on Alter’s bust!  Now staining is a very environmentally dependent event, what doesn’t happen in my house doesn’t mean it won’t happen in yours.  So your result might vary.

Let’s take a more in depth look of the two Dollfie Dream set to be available from Volks USA lottery.

First one up is of course my personal favorite, the mysterious swordsman Sakuya サクヤ from the recently released PSP game Shining Blade, skilled in the ancient art of alchemy, who also served as the female commander of the Valeria Liberation Front.  Sakuya will also play a few cameo appearances in the Shining Hearts Anime Adaptation ~Shiawase no Pan~ as Maxima Enfield, those of you who can’t wait to get a glimpse of her graceful image may do so without getting into the game.  However, I really enjoyed playing Shining Blade myself and has been pondering whether I should write a review on it or not.

As I mentioned in the in my Sakuya Detailed Spec page, if you would like her to wear the earrings, please pierce them on your own.  After consulting with comrades with Kan’u who also came equipped with earring, Volks has never pierce the earhole in the past so this is actually completely natural for Volks to do.  I am going to buy myself a cheap practice head before performing the operation on Sakuya :3

Priced at $715 USD, Sakuya is definitely one of the more expensive limited Dollfie Dream, but I guess that is to be expected since she come equipped with her katana “Tempered Blade Keducayon”.

As for me personally, since Sakuya is just the right type of bishoujo for me, I am definitely going to pick her up!

Next one up is the rather unique and surprise entry Dollfie Dream Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4!

I was never a fan of the Persona series and admittedly don’t intend on diving into another pit at the moment since I will have my hands full this time with Sakuya categorized as a must have Dollfie Dream!

Rise has a rather unique face sculpt in my opinion, similar to Alna, Rise actually look much closer to that of a Super Dollfie.

I was going to blog about Shining Hearts,

I was going to blog about the arrival of of newest DD daughter arrival Haruka Niimi…

And the rest of the Dollfie Dream loots arrival earlier in the month…

However, I decided everything had to be put on hold last Friday night due to the passing of my grandmother.  I briefly announced her passing in twitter and facebook but I think I should properly address this one more time after her funeral service.

I rarely talks about my family in this blog, but this time I would like to make an exception to pay my tribute to my grandmother.

For the past 30 some odd years, my grandmother has always been there for me; ever since I was a baby, she has always been there to look after me, took care of me when I was young, had breakfast ready before I woke up and wait for us to go to bed before taking a break … she never complained my mischief.  She has worked all her life to make sure my brothers and I were raised properly… but for the past couple of years, she has been very sick and was hardly able to enjoy her life.  I knew she would leave us someday and it was always in the back of my mind.  Now she has actually passed away, I sorta regret that I never did tell her that I really do appreciate everything she has done for me for the past 30 some odd years…. Whether you believe in god or not, it doesn’t matter, it is my wish that her soul has gone to a better place and may she rest in peace.

P.S. Now that I have got this off my chest, I shall resume my regularly scheduled activities pretty soon~

As usual, those of you who are venturing into this hobby for the first time, please feel free to read up on my Where to buy a Dollfie Dream – A beginner’s guide and that will get off into a good start and understanding on just how this whole Doll party thing works.

I have been waiting for the release of this dollfie dream ever since I saw her character introduction during my playthrough of Shining Hearts for Dollfie Dream Airy and Neris, but I guess they saved the best for last; and since Sakuya was only a guest character known as Maxima Enfield in Shining Hearts (to hide her true identity for obvious reasons), her true story actually begin in Shining Blade, so I guess that make sense in a way~

Sakuya as Maxima in Shining Hearts.  The timing of this release is just perfect since Shining Hearts anime adaptation is due to start next week!  However, I guess it will take at least a couple of episodes before we will catch a glimpse of Sakuya/Maxima hehehe.

Interestingly enough, like I blogged about in my last post, the sculptor for Sakuya is unnamed so we don’t really know who designed her head mold except a few people who suggested Sakuya share a resemblance to Neris.  Sakuya will come standard as DDIII-L bust, her Noir combat dress and katana used in the game.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the images released by Volks today~

With the DDIII body, Sakuya will definitely be able to replicate some of these combat poses we see in Tony Taka’s illustration easily~

As we can see here, the Noir combat dress is faithfully reproduced here!

I am glad Volks gives us a nice close up shot here, Sakuya has a charming face a bit more serious look compared to the rest of my Dollfie Dream girls.  And since I have already done my homework and finished Shining Blade, that was an easy decision to say I am going to adopt Sakuya, although your preferences might vary.  Those of you who are interested in finding out more about Sakuya can buy yourself a copy of  Shining Blade (Sony PSP) at Play-Asia.com

Edit: Finally a clear image of DD Sakuya’s spec emerged from the web!  What we see here finally is that Sakuya will come standard DDIII-L with her default Noir combat dress and her katana, which contribute to her higher than usual price.  What’s noteworthy here is that the sculptor is not named :s so we don’t really know who designed her face mold, other than she shares a resemblance to Neris.

What is interesting here is that Cirno also has unspecified sculptor, I thought for sure it ought to be Misaki’s handy work, but I guess not.  As expected, Cirno will come with the redesigned Mini Dollfie Dream III body S bust and with some kind of magnet attachment for the wings?  Not 100% sure how that’s going to work yet.

So based on the information that is available so far, Rise will come standard with S bust and the sculptor for is Kosuke Kitahara, previous work includes Rina Ogata, Kiriha Kuze, Beatrice, Moe/Natsuki, and Haruka Niimi etc.

The whole Fate/stay Night franchise has been very successful with Volks, so I am not at all surprised to see Azone wanting to jump onto the bandwagon!

If you ask me, I would say Azone’s Saber is closer to the original illustration that Volks.  The faceup kinda give off a more serious and stern expression than what you would usually see from Volks’ line of Dollfie Dream.

Here is a short of my DD Saber for comparison sake.

The Azone obitsu doll has always had the upper hand in terms of articulation and poseability, but Volks’ recently released DDIII has closed the gap up.
