Who is FuBear?

The Gimme Five online initiative touched the hearts of thousands of Filipino netizens, with many becoming fans of the mascot and its message. Filipinos experienced a pleasant surprise when seeing FuBear in theme parks filled with families bonding, in tricycle stations where commuters and drivers are waiting in line, and in office pantries where young professionals are taking their break time. The Taiwan Expo 2025 exhibition has offcially opened today in the Philippines at the SMX Convention Center and will be open to the public until September 19.

The Taiwan Excellence Pavilion was one of the exhibits presented, displaying innovative products while carrying the theme: “Inspiring Tomorrow: Solutions for a Brighter Life.” Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray, hosted a meet and greet, as well as a live autograph signing session to fans and visitors of the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion.

Key delegates of leading Taiwan institutions were also present at the press conference for the launch of the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion in the Philippines, such as Mr. Simon Wang, the President and CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA); Ms. Josephine Shun, the Director of the Economic Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office of the Philippines (TECO).

Visa-Free Entry for Filipino Tourists Extended Again, Taiwan Tourism Administration Forms Delegation to Join Philippine Travel Expo and Promotion Events

Taiwan recently announced a one-year extension of the visa-free entry policy for Filipino travelers to Taiwan (until July 31, 2026). In response, the Taiwan Tourism Administration, swiftly organized a Taiwan tourism delegation comprising 50 representatives from 25 organizations, including the Taichung City Government, travel agencies, hotels, and airlines. The delegation will travel to the Philippines from July 11 to 13 to participate in the Travel Madness Expo (TME) 2025.

According to the latest data from the Taiwan Tourism Administration, the visa-free policy has significantly boosted travel from the Philippines. In Q1 of 2025, arrivals from the Philippines reached 146,581—an impressive 29% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, making the Philippines the fastest-growing source market globally and the largest source market in Southeast Asia.

At TME, the Taiwan Tourism Administration will set up a "Taiwan Pavilion" themed around its Tourism Brand 3.0 campaign, “Taiwan – Waves of Wonder.” The pavilion will use vivid colors and playful elements to showcase the charm of Taiwan across all four seasons. Highlighted within the pavilion are popular Instagram-worthy landmarks such as Taipei 101, Taichung’s Rainbow Village, the Taiwan International Balloon Festival in Taitung, and the Morning Hot Springs of Green Island—inviting Filipino visitors to take memorable photos while experiencing Taiwan's rich and diverse travel appeal.

To amplify the impact of this year’s promotion, the Taiwan Pavilion has invited top Filipino influencers, including Carl Chuidian (The Chui Show) and well-known travel vlogger Mommy Haidee. Both will share their firsthand travel experiences in Taiwan, along with must-try cuisine and attractions. Their appearances are expected to generate significant buzz and draw more Filipino travelers to choose Taiwan as their top travel destination.

In recent years, travel from the Philippines to Taiwan has continued to surge. Taiwan’s close proximity, short flight time, diverse cuisine, and distinctive attractions—especially the high-speed rail system, which the Philippines lacks—are all key factors in attracting Filipino tourists. In 2024, Taiwan welcomed 467,000 Filipino visitors, the highest among all Southeast Asian countries. The growth momentum continues in 2025, with a 25.38% increase in arrivals during January to March compared to the same period in 2024. The Philippines now ranks as Taiwan’s top Southeast Asian source market and sixth globally, demonstrating remarkable performance.

To further strengthen Taiwan–Philippines tourism industry cooperation and attract more Filipino travelers, in addition to participating in the TME, the Taiwan tourism delegation will also host promotional events in Iloilo (the Philippines’ 4th largest city) and Cebu (the 2nd largest city) on July 15 and 16. The event to officially launch the campaign was held in Taiwan on Tuesday, June 3. The press conference welcomed distinguished guests including Mr. Robert Wu, Chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Association; Mr. Jeff Chen, President of the Taiwan Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association; and Mr. Spark Huang, Director of the Taiwan Medical and Biotech Industry Association, alongside key industry representatives. Media representatives from 12 international outlets across Europe, the U.S., Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, as well as foreign diplomats in Taiwan, also attended in support of the campaign.

The campaign’s promotional theme, aptly titled “Pitching Taiwan’s Best: A Homerun for Proposals!”, was unveiled during the event. The Taiwanese baseball star, Mr. An-Ko Lin, made a surprise appearance along with the mascot of Taiwan Excellence, Fu Bear. The quarterly vinyl record fair promises to take everyone on a nostalgic journey and be reconnected through timeless tunes that have soundtracked generations.

From classic rock anthems to beloved OPM hits, jazz and soul, the event will bring a vast collection of rare, vintage and new vinyl records that will delight dads and music enthusiasts alike.

Last March, Ayala Malls Trinoma housed the One Stop Record Fair: Vinyl in Motion for two days, right at the heart of Quezon City, which drew in patrons, curious mall-goers and the younger generation.

Due to public demand, the One Stop Record Fair: Vinyl in Motion Dad’s Day edition will come back to Ayala Malls Trinoma for something bigger and better.

The staple all-day old-school music spun by Manila’s veteran DJs, the intimate and nostalgic atmosphere and a great selection of vinyl records were maintained but more upgrades set it apart from prior fairs.

Over 20 vinyl vendors were present, but beyond music, there were also CDs, cassette tapes, band shirts and other vintage items, such as coins and bills, and collectibles sold at the event.

Trinoma also added its own spin to the event, by offering free freshly made mocktails from TGI Fridays and beautifully curated flower bouquet from Smitten. Customers just need to present a minimum single receipt worth P500 from any Trinoma merchant.

For its first season production, the Philippine Ballet Theatre presents "The Merry Widow"—a delightful tale brimming with tangled relationships, near misses, and jealous lovers. Originally premiered as an operetta by Franz Lehár in Vienna in 1905, "The Merry Widow" has inspired numerous choreographic adaptations by ballet companies around the world. Set in Paris, the city of love, it explores themes of forbidden and rekindled love, wealth, and deceit.

In its version, "Merry Widow" is skillfully choreographed and presented by Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director, Ronilo Jaynario, in a way that is sure to resonate with the Filipino audience’s appreciation for passion and drama. The dancers showcase their talents in classical ballet, character dance, mime, and theatrical acting. Franz Lehár’s exquisite melodies will transport audiences to a world of romance, wit, and opulence in "The Merry Widow," where every note celebrates love and elegance.

Homage to History

This ballet has been a true gem for the company. It’s inclusion in the season is an homage to its roots; unbeknownst to many, "The Merry Widow" was among the first ballets ever performed by the company. Former Artistic Director Julie Borromeo's version premiered in 1987, making waves and establishing PBT as a company with a sophisticated repertoire and innovative approach. It set the tone for what was to come. Almost four decades later, the ballet remains a testament to the vision of the founders: a company capable of competing globally with both Filipino works and classical repertoire. With hopes high, this fifth restaging aims to reaffirm that legacy. As a company guided by an artistic council, continuing the tradition of rich taste, innovation, and undeniable skill is of utmost importance. Through this ballet,PBT wishes to honor PBT's founding members, expressing gratitude for setting the course toward the PBT of today, the National Performing Arts Company for ballet and contemporary dance. This production is lovingly dedicated to the eleven founding members: Julie Borromeo, Felicitas Radaic, Steve Villaruz, Gener Caringal, Eddie Elejar, Leonor-Orosa Goquinco, Vella Damian, Sony Lopez-Gonzales, the late Tony Fabella, the late Eric Cruz, and the late Inday Gaston-Manosa. Their pursuit of a fresh approach to ballet remains the guiding light for PBT. It's a fitting ballet to start the year right.

Teachers Always Matter: REX and PEAC Reaffirm Commitment to the Teaching Profession, Launch Year 4 of Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan

The education sector needs the best and brightest to lead the way. With this vision, Rex Education and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) united in 2020 to launch the PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan, a scholarship program dedicated to championing and advancing teacher education by inspiring top learners to pursue the teaching profession.

Four years later, the mission remains steadfast: to cultivate the country's brightest minds into champions of education—integral members of the Edukampyon community. Teachers, being closest to learners, are the ultimate Edukampyons, wielding the power to significantly impact Filipino learners and guiding them toward creating a better future for themselves, society, and nation.

On Teachers’ Day, October 5, Rex Education and PEAC reaffirmed this commitment with the formal launch of Year 4 of the PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan, in a virtual event titled “A Commitment for the Future of the Teaching Profession: PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan Year 4 Launch.”

“I am deeply grateful and excited to be celebrating yet another meaningful milestone with all of you. Parang ang bilis ng panahon. I can hardly believe we are already launching the fourth year of our PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan Program,” said Don Timothy Buhain, Chief Executive Officer of RexEducation and Co-Chair of the scholarship program, during his keynote.

In his speech, Buhain highlighted the pressing need for meaningful change in the quality of education in the country, especially in light of the recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 rankings, where Filipino learners ranked 77th out of 81 countries. This alarming statistic underscores the need for education stakeholders—parents, school administrators, teachers, academic publishers, government, the whole nation—to intensify their initiatives, deepen their actions, and unite in uplifting education in the country.

According to Buhain, this enhancement in education quality hinges on improving teacher quality, which is a primary goal of this scholarship program. “Looking back, this all began with a shared recognition of a vital need. We knew that if we truly wanted to see meaningful change in the quality of education, particularly in teacher quality, we had to act swiftly,” Buhain stated. “In PEAC, we found a partner whose aspirations for learners and educators aligndeeply with ours. I truly believe we could not have asked for a more fitting collaborator and partner in this endeavor.”

This initiative will soon celebrate its first graduating class—14 of the country’s top scholars—who are set to enter the teaching profession next year as the pioneer batch of the PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan program. For Year 4, PEAC and Rex Education are proud to welcome 25 scholars—the most in the program’s still short but fruitful history—in this continuing investment and commitment tothe teaching profession.

“Through this program, we aim to advance teacher quality by recruiting the best and brightest first-year students who want to pursue the teaching profession—especially in math and science—and grant them scholarships. An excellent host for an excellent show

It was in 2017 when she shot a video about TV reporting along Cuyab River, (now known as Tunasan-Cuyab River), a river system in the Philippines. That particular video, where she almost perfectly impersonated award-winning broadcaster Karen Davila in her reporting style, became viral and thus gave birth to a name that will soon resonate in the Philippine entertainment and news industries.

The woman in the viral video was Jervi Lisaba, who later became Mrs. Jervi Wrightson, and now more popularly known as award-winning actress, writer, endorser, impersonator, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, plus (LGBTQIA+) rights advocate, television personality and radio host “KaladKaren.”

As soon as the video exploded and brought KaladKaren to local and international consciousness, it certainly opened doors of opportunities for the young talent, where many lauded her flawless impersonation of the “real” Karen Davila in both reporting style and body language. But being famous because of the video, she was not bereft of bashers and haters, who branded her as having her “15 minutes of fame” and simply a “flash in the pan.”

Anchored on Excellence

But she was unperturbed because Jervi, now Mrs. Wrightson, has seen to it that all that she does in life are anchored on excellence. With all the challenges in life that she experienced, she knows that being at her excellent best is the only way that she will be noticed.

That is why she worked hard starting with her studies, where she graduated with Latin honors (Magna cum Laude) at the University of the Philippines – Diliman, Quezon City with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications.

But her achievements did not end there but actually, more followed.

KaladKaren was lauded as a leading figure in promoting awareness about the LGBTQIA+ community in the country, where she was seen as a positive symbol. She upped the ante when she became the first transgender woman news anchor in the country, and became the first transgender woman to win “Best Supporting Actress” at the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) summer edition for the movie “Here Comes the Groom,” and is also a resident judge of reality TV competition series Drag Race Philippines.

To further promote her ideals and other advocacies, many of them on LGBTQIA+ issues, Jervi once again will make her online presence felt as she will be handling hosting chores of the newest game show in town, “Bee Excellent,” organized by Taiwan Excellence under Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs. “Bee Excellent” is an online quiz show where questions will focus on general knowledge on innovation and environmental sustainability.

Of course, it was a no-brainer that given her hosting expertise, Jervi was tapped to host the show, her first time to experience such an assignment.

“I have never hosted a game show yet that’s why I’m quite excited to be the host of this very new online quiz bee. I also have never been to Taiwan that’s why it’s even more exciting that this show is organized by Taiwan Excellence,” Jervi said in her YouTube vlog about the show.

She likewise mentioned that her excitement is also fueled by the fact that her long-time partner and now-husband, Luke Wrightson, used to work in Taiwan, and that she has many friends who go there frequently and always points out that going to Taiwan is always a fun-filled experience.

To express her obvious anticipation and generate more excitement about the show, she made a behind-the-scenes vlog on her YouTube channel regarding her adventures in shooting the “Bee Excellent” episodes. In her vlog, she showed where they shot the episodes, and even had fun interacting with the show’s production staff after their arduous taping through a mini game show.

"Bee Excellent" consisted of three episodes, and the first episode was aired last October 14. Contestants are asked to answer questions related to general knowledge about Taiwan, including trivia and cultural topics. The answers were submitted via Google Forms or in the Comments Section.

Five participants per episode won P5,000 each, along with bragging rights as winners of the first online game show in the country.

“Your Song of Excellence: Duo Legacy” showcases amazing singing talent Filipinos

Filipinos are gifted with musical talent. Singing competitions has proven time and again to be a big ticket for those aspiring for stardom in the local music scene.

And this was more evident during the Grand Finals of one of the longest running top notch singing and songwriting competition in the country, now in its fourth season, “Your Song of Excellence: Duo Legacy,” held last Saturday (Aug 31) at Market! Market! in Taguig City, which was hosted by Nicole Asensio, herself a multi-awarded singer-songwriter, and an accomplished host and theater actress.

Unlike the previous seasons of “Your Song of Excellence,” this year’s format involved singing-songwriting duos battling it out with other pairs from all over the country, who gave their all during the audition, preliminaries, the semifinal stages and ultimately, the grand finale, where three duos were chosen.

During the grand finals, each duo was given the herculean task of performing two full songs—a Taiwan Excellence Jingle and a Taiwan Excellence Core Value Song, with a maximum length of 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

The Taiwan Excellence Jingle should make use of the words “Taiwan Excellence” and the “The Best Made in Taiwan.” For the second song, the mentor-judges and their Duo Grand Finalist must choose one of the core values of Taiwan Excellence—innovation, interesting, sustainability, global quality—and make that core value as the theme for their song.

The competition leading up to the grand finals was tough and arduous. Finally, the Top 3 singing duos duked it out for one last time on August 31, 2024 to determine the winner. The task of choosing only one winner out of the three grand finalists proved to be even tougher for the judge-mentors, celebrity judges Yeng Constantino, the country’s pop rock royalty, multi-awarded singer-songwriter, Ice Seguerra, multi-awarded singer-songwriter, actor, TV host and producer, Paulo Zarate, multi-awarded music producer and songwriter, and Kean Cipriano, multi-awarded singer-songwriter, music producer, and the newest member of the judging and mentoring panel.

But there can only be one grand winner.

When the smoke of battle had cleared, it was Mandarhyme Duo, composed of Rusty Loayon and Janine Loayon, who prevailed and won a whopping P300,000 as the Grand Winner.

First Runner Up was Haranajeeb Duo, composed of Khen Aldovino and Nephtali Fajardo, who took home P200,000, while The Unexpected Duo, composed of Vench Larenas and Renz Salazar went home with P100,000 as the Second Runner Up.

But more importantly, the crowd that packed the venue, composed of supporters and weekend crowd, all cheered on each of the excellent performances of the grand finalists, proving once again that excellence in the art of singing is something that Filipinos and the Philippines can be truly proud of.

The “Your Song of Excellence: Duo Legacy” was made even more spectacular and meaningful with the presence of officials from event organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) namely, Mr. Brian Lee, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing Department of TAITRA and Mr. Alex Lai, Director of Taiwan Trade Center Manila, and officials from the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines, led by Mr. Wallace Chow, Ambassador of TECO in the Philippines, and Ms. Josephine Shun, Director of Economic Division, TECO Philippines.

As we gear up for another school year, we face piracy threats with online publications at our fingertips. Books and other learning resources are becoming increasingly accessible, influencing how we study and learn. How safe are our learners, teachers, schools, publishers, and institutions in this environment? The recent cyberattack on the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) reveals the serious risks we face.

On April 2, local hackers breached the DOST network, compromising two terabytes of data, including personal information of employees and research plans, designs, and schematics. This incident underscores the vulnerability of online platforms to data breaches, particularly when cybersecurity measures are not regularly maintained, monitored, updated, and enhanced.

Protecting our online identity, fighting piracy, and supporting copyrighted content are crucial. Individually, we can secure online learning environments by teaching students to safeguard their personal data. This includes securing devices, avoiding public Wi-Fi, using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and accessing only licensed learning management systems. The Center for Culinary Arts (CCA) Manila hosted a one-day conference dubbed The Future of Food powered by Courage Asia. Discussed in the conference was a range of topics that give insight into improving not only the business side of the industry, but also looking back to traditions in search of ways forward.

This is further highlighted by the keynote address of Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda when she expounded on how food systems are threatened by climate change and how it can be possibly mitigated, “I believe we draw hope from the wisdom passed down by our ancestors, the resilience of their food systems, and the innovativeness of our people. The future of food is not just about what we eat, but what it went through and how we consume it.”

A little over a dozen speakers talked about sustainable practices that help food producers directly connect with restaurants, conservation of food cultures by passing on local traditions and understanding the rich diversity of the country’s local and indigenous ingredients, and elevating the dining experience through best practices and with the aid of new technology.

The future of food, especially here in the Philippines, calls for more supporters and practitioners to champion these advocacies to ensure that the legacy of the country’s rich culinary heritage will be passed on.

CCA’s Culinary Director and Culinary Advisor of Breville Philippines, Chef Philip John Golding focused on how Technology Trends in the Kitchen can build on CCA’s tradition of honing exceptional culinary talents, who can push the boundaries of gastronomy and elevate Filipino cuisine to new heights through smart technology.

“The technology that we now use are extremely relevant for the future,” Chef Golding highlighted some of the new tools that they are starting to use in CCA campuses, “digital kitchen or connected kitchen refers to a kitchen equipped with advanced technology and digital tools to enhance efficiency, productivity, and functionality.”

He elaborated further that by integrating digital and smart devices, it can streamline kitchen operations with its advanced software and systems and improve the cooking process.

“Some of these advanced features and components are already commonly found in digital professional kitchens; these include intelligent cooking appliances such as smart ovens, induction cooktops, sous vide machines, and smart refrigerators.”

Chef Golding explained that these appliances often come with built in sensors, connectivity features, and programmable settings to optimize cooking processes and ensure precise results.
