WHY PAY TO VOLUNTEER?

Prospective volunteers are surprised to learn that many programs charge their volunteers a fee to participate. At first, this can seem ridiculous —Why should you pay money to work for free? Aren't you already forgoing income you could be making? Here are a few things to keep in mind while trying to understand why the vast majority of programs charge international volunteers a fee:

The local organizations and projects with which you volunteer overseas have limited resources and are seldom able to subsidize your trip or cover the costs of hosting you. (These costs include housing, feeding and transporting you, among numerous other things.)
Identifying appropriate host organizations overseas and working with them is time-consuming, takes resources, and requires an experienced and professional staff.
The process of preparing, training, transporting, housing, feeding, and supervising volunteers is not cheap. Additional services such as health care, re-entry assistance, travel medical insurance, and more, all add to the expenses of a program.

Majority of public schools in Nigeria don’t give children healthy food , thereby inducing malnutrition, now posing a serious threat to education, particularly in developing countries, including Nigeria. Malnutrition causes poor growth in children, leading to impaired mental development, poor scholastic and intellectual development.

A report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), describes these effects as the most serious long-term results of malnutrition.

Although several organizations worldwide, governmental and private, have made efforts to combat and stop malnutrition, not much have been achieved in this direction.

Malnutrition is caused by a deficiency in the intake of nutrients by the cells of the body. A combination of two factors can be responsible.

These are: (i) insufficient intake of proteins, calories, vitamins, and minerals, (ii) frequent infections. Sickness like measles, malaria, diarrhea (frequent stooling) and respiratory disorder cause loss of nutrients in the body.

They reduce appetite and food intake, contributing invariably to malnutrition.

Children suffer malnutrition most because they are in a period of rapid growth that increases the demand for calories and proteins.

UNICEF said that a deficiency of vitamin A affects over 100 million small children in the world and causes blindness. It also weakens the immune system, making them vulnerable to infections. For children who survive malnutrition, the consequences can follow into adulthood.

"The depletion of human intelligence on such a scale - for reasons that are almost entirely preventable is a profligate, even criminal, waste," UNICEF stated.

It added that, "more than 3/4 (three quarters) of all the malnutrition-aided deaths are linked not to severe malnutrition but to mild and moderate forms."

UNICEF submitted in the state of the world’s children thus. "It is implicated in more than half of all child deaths worldwide-a proportion unmatched by any infectious disease since the Black Death. Yet, it is not an infectious disease. It ravages extend to the millions of survivors who are left crippled, chronically vulnerable to illness, and intellectually disabled. It imperils women, families and, ultimately the viability of whole societies." Malnutrition is linked to a variety of illnesses - from under-nourishment as a result of lack of one or more nutrient - such as Vitamin and mineral deficiencies to obesity and other diet-related diseases. Regarded as by far the most lethal form of malnutrition is Protein - Energy Malnutrition (PEM).

The World Health Organization called PEM "the silent emergency" whose major victims are children of school age. It declared that PEM "is an accomplice in at least half of the 10.4 million child deaths each year."

Furthermore, malnutrition is said to cast long shadows, affecting close to 800 million people - 20% of all people in the developing countries. In other words, 1 out of every 8 people in the world suffers from malnutrition.

Ordinarily, malnutrition is the lack of food. But at the centre of it all is poverty, which affects about 80% of Nigerian population, weakening productivity and capacity of children to learn properly in school.

In 2004 -Vanguard Education Weekly investigation showed that, the Lagos state government attempted to tackle malnutrition among school children, when it launched a plan to provide free meal for pupils of less-privileged parents who do not enjoy balanced meals in their homes.

The government said it allocated N1 billion for its free meal programme in all its 913 primary schools. It was part of the school health scheme meant to enhance the nutritional intakes of pupils. The first phase (pilot stage) was to begin with primary one, while pupils of the other classes would follow as government expected assistance from international organizations like, UNICEF and other donor agencies which had shown interest in the scheme.

But the programme seemed not to have taken off the ground, as malnutrition wreaks havoc in the school system. Most children attend classes with empty stomach, leaving their homes with little or no food. The proposed free mid-day meal would have been the saving grace for these undernourished children.

While the Nigerian government has not shown concern for the nutrition of school children in this country, the situation in neighbouring Ghana can be instructive.

The Ghanaian government has just announced a five-year plan to reduce hunger and malnutrition among pupils in schools across that country. An amount of $347.4 million (three hundred and forty-seven million, four hundred thousand dollars) have been earmarked for the programme; which will be in pilot phases. Children will be given one balanced meal a day for five days.

By this, short-term hunger and malnutrition among children will be reduced.

Except in Nigeria, in many other countries, government and private organisations have initiated food supplementation schemes for school children.Communities can help in stemming the devastating tide of malnutrition by providing mid-day meals in schools, provide nutritional education programmes and safe drinking water supply.Malnutrition has been identified as a big problem afflicting developing nations, especially school children from poor homes.

According to UNICEF, "a lack of access to good education and correct information is also a cause of malnutrition," adding: "Without information strategies and better and more accessible education programmes, the awareness, skills and behaviours needed to combat malnutrition cannot be developed."

Lack of food reduces, in turn, a person’s health and ability to get a better education.

While it has been agreed that there is more than enough food for all, the problem is that food is neither produced nor distributed equitably.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) pointed out that, "all too frequently, the poor in fertile developing countries stand by watching with empty hands - and empty stomachs - while ample harvests and bumper crops are exported for hard cash. Short-term profits for a few, long-term losses for many."

A recent study by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) showed that the richest fifth of the people on the planet eat 45% of all the meat and fish, the poorest fifth get just 5%. As attested by Encyclopedia Britannica, "the provision of an adequate food supply and nutritional education to all people, however, remains a crucial problem.".

But remember this challenge is for the benefit of our very poor deprived women and children who urgently need our assistance in education and otherwise, indeed this task is not an easy task at all, however it gives one the utmost feelings of satisfaction and great pride to be a part of some ones dream to become a doctor, nurse, teacher etc.. CHEAP HEALTHY FOODS CAN PROVIDE NUTRITION FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY.

WCG101 CHEAP HEALTHY FOODS CAMPAIGN
The goal of our research was to gain insight into the daily food and diets intakes and the Health benefits of people living in abject poverty. Women Care Group101 Non-Government Organizations' (WCG101 Nonprofit) has decided to raise an awareness and a special campaign to support her free education and feeding program. We have shared our opinions toward the value of healthy nutritional food for poor women therefore we are building an innovative food support program which will benefit the poor and achieve our support for the United Nation Millennium Goals for the poor.

Our focus it to develop and educate women about the benefits of certain foods which are cheap and affordable for the poor, and to further demonstrate the need to improve their livelihood by providing and equipping them with our special education/feeding program.

A Solution to World Hunger?

Eating snails solve the problem of malnutrition in poor communities world wide especially in developing countries like Africa and Asia and other third world countries? Researchers are optimistic that these common mollusks could provide much needed nutrition to people living in developing countries where inexpensive sources of protein are hard to come by. According to a study published in the International Journal of Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Health snails may actually be superior to beef in terms of nutritional value, taste acceptability, and cost.

Is Eating Snails Nutritious?

Snails are surprisingly nutritious – high in protein and low in saturated fat. One ounce of snail has five grams of protein and is an excellent source of essential fatty acids. They’re also a good source of vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin K, magnesium, iron, and selenium.
Eating snails has been a culinary custom for thousands of years and is a delicacy in many Asian countries. In

Cantonensis which can cause a rare form of meningitis called eosinophilic meningitis if ingested. We educate our women to make sure the snails are well boiled. Eating snails is healthy and appealing however we make sure we advice our women to make sure they’re well cooked even so every food we teach how to wash them properly with clean water more especially vegetables which is often the cause of some virus out breaks which spread through unclean food.Maintaining an overall healthy diet not only offers your body the energy and nutrition that it needs to function, but offers several health benefits as well.Below is a list those foods that are the best for you body, and the health benefits that those foods provide.

Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables as an overall healthy diet may:

reduce risk for stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

reduce risk for type 2 diabetes.

protect against certain cancers, such as mouth, stomach, and colon-rectum cancer.

How Violence Affects Women And Children

Introduction

The project was undertaken as an attempt to understand the effects of riots on women and children. In my research I have noticed through a thorough research I have conducted, of the after effects riots or violence have on women and children worldwide. Riots/violence is the state whereby men and women including youths take to the streets to protest for a course/injustice, health issues, jobs , political or monetary issues etc.. However the after effects of the crimes committed during the protest against humanity and life are often ignored, and this has affected thousands of families.

The victims are mostly women and children:

The worst victims, as always are women and children. For so many years not one riot has has happened without women and children being the ones mostly affected. Since my Study several families who lost their loved ones where never compensated. This is a wake up call for all of us to address the needs for a stabilized society and find the best way to organize a peaceful demonstration if there be need for a demonstration, as we all know who will pay the most price, our women and children of course!.

About The Children:

The effect on tender psyche of children needs to be analyzed and understood, and constructive steps need to be taken. Imagine allowing a child watches his/her parent beaten to death what other horrible society are we encouraging?. The effect this type of trauma on a child could last for generations.

We Can Change The Way We Do Things:

We can change the way we do things for the future of our children and learn more peaceful ways to solve our problems without violence. This massage I hope shall help us think deep and find a suitable solution on how to curb riots and demonstrations by enforcing a more stronger law, self control, and deeper understanding of what our society are seeking for and creating a more peaceful and diplomatic opportunities for our leaders to come together and attend to the people’s needs without crushing them or agitating the people including the society at large.

Are we really marching for our rights?

We the people should understand the implications of marching the streets and destroying government buildings, embassies, churches, mosques, we should all know that such act is wrong both morally and otherwise. Naturally any government will resolve to use any means necessary to calm the onslaught but in this case we must always remember that women pay the most most price often by loosing their children or even their own life's. We must consider the implications on our women and future generations before we make rash decisions. The horrors I have witnessed in the past has made me decide to seek for a forum whereby we all will come and fight for peace .

I am moved and disturbed after seeing so many documentaries about victims of riots, and have wanted to seek a direct contact with the women and children the riots had affected to understand the kind of effect riots had on them. Such effects could have impacted their thinking, their creativity, their desires and their outlook towards life. I am planning on setting up a meeting with the women and children who has been victims of street violence/ riots and get a first hand experience and observation of such effects it has on them and their children.

This is the Affects Riots/violence has On Women and Children:

Children and Women are the worst victims of any disaster, especially if it is man made. Due to them being physically weaker, they end up being soft targets of crime against humanity. The children suffer in many ways. Not only they are orphaned or physically maimed, they end up being witness to the most horrendous crimes and scenes that leaves a very deep psychic wound in them. Such wounds don’t heal easily.

Kano Riots (1992), Jos Riots Nigerian (2010) changed the lives of thousands of children. Many of them lost their parents and relatives, and the worst aspect was that they saw them being murdered, maimed, raped and burnt before their eyes. Even a full grown adult male would be disturbed and traumatized after seeing such scenes. The effect on a tender psyche of a child is unimaginable.

The project was undertaken as an attempt to understand the effects of riots on women and children, and find ways to reach out and help the victims this requires researches millions of dollars and physical actions e.g. volunteers and physiological doctors must be employed to help us decided the best ways to cure or at least help the victims..

Previous studies and observations:

There have been some studies, both medical and sociological, on children who were victims of the riots. Most of the children were found to be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which causes problems like irritability, sadness, fear, sleep disturbances, difficulties in concentrating and feelings of guilt.

What Is PTSD In children, Adolescents And women Affected By The Riots:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a prolonged, pathologic anxiety that may occur following a severe trauma in both adults and adolescents. This concept has developed over hundreds of years of experience and experimentation.PTSD symptoms have been recognized for centuries as an extreme reaction to trauma.

In 1980 PTSD was officially recognized as a mental disorder when it was included in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III) by the American Psychiatric Association.

PTSD symptoms are long in duration, subjectively painful, functionally impairing, and are often associated with alcohol/drug abuse and diminished impulse control.

Risk & Protective Factors Related To PTSD:

The prevalence of PTSD is determined by the presence or absence of the following risk and protective factors

The frequency of trauma in a population:

The characteristics of the trauma experienced including it's frequency (single vs. multiple events), severity and duration of each event, and ongoing risk of recurrence.

The preparation of the population for coping with traumatic events by understanding the nature of traumatic and post traumatic stress, techniques for coping during the trauma, and techniques for recovering after the trauma, indicators that professional help is required, and how to access treatment resources.

Individual characteristics including the level of personal resiliency previously learned coping skills, and previous successful experiences in coping with other similar traumatic experiences, and the presence or absence of addiction or mental health problems prior to the trauma.

The nature of support following the trauma:

Safe and supportive environments that encourage talking about the trauma in an accepting and non-judgmental atmosphere, and encourage a personal process of recovery lower the incidence and severity of PTSD. Nonsupportive environments that deny the trauma, minimize its severity, criticize or judge the victim for having symptoms, and fail to encourage a personal recovery process increase the incidence and severity of PTSD.. Around 50 out of 255 showed symptoms of some disorder, which was not PTSD, but they needed medical help.

Women Care Group101 hopes to conduct an interview to victims of riot/violence Majority of those affected by riot are mostly the poor families.

The Journey Ahead:

People have to be really sensitized for active social intervention and acceptance of these facts and the nature we should all conduct further demonstrations. People should be educated and need to know how many future generations are affected and should understand the kind of society we will end up encouraging. Women and children have suffered greatly in the past years , if we keep silent how can our present and future be shaped.

Most misunderstood Crimes:

Most crimes committed today are children and many of these juveniles are children who have been pushed to crime or have been rendered homeless due to riots. There prolonged stay in juvenile homes due to slow process and red-tapism only adds to their problems and makes them more irritable and recalcitrant.

Religious and political riots:

It’s important to use their skill-set and give them an opportunity to smile. Such children need to be assimilated in the mainstream before it’s too late. Not only sympathy, but a lot of social will is required to make it happen.

The most important step and requirement is to end up prejudices in minds of different communities, especially among us irrespective of our religion or beliefs we must learn to live together and co-exist as one.

Note! Such imagined threats from each other is causing innocent children to suffer.

Big success education for the poor women and children

The Women Care Group101 free education center for women and children hope to promote the personal growth and development of women in local communities irrespective of color religion or statues. The Organization will improve the overall livelihood of women by using education as a way of improving the lives of poor women the society at large. The Organization shall be teaching beginners English language and beginners writing skills, computer and other courses.

The objective is

· To establish library and reading rooms in needy communities.

· To create a healing learning centre for teenage girls about safe sex and unwanted pregnancy and abuse etc.

· To help and generate training programme for self employment of women and educated unemployed people and to work for adult education.

· To educate the people for adoption of the good norms of a good citizenship and to teach the people the benefits of ideas of national unity.

· To make women become more entrepreneurs and enterprising in whatever they do.

· To improve their livelihood

· To empower women and young women through skill training.

· To educate women to be self conscious and fully aware of their right and privileges in the society

· To help the children become future leaders

We hope to achieve this through our passion to help the poor women and The Big Success Education Center for the poor! Program is based on the latest research on effective reading instruction by teaching them the entire general curriculum we hope this will increase their reading speed and comprehension, which will help them obtain classroom subject proficiency. Our teachers are voluntary teachers and passionate and dedicated teams who believe that helping the poor makes life better! They are well mannered and well organized. Women Care Group101 believes in equal opportunity for all. Our teachers are from different Nationality who has one vision to teach the poor for free!

Program Description.

The Organization will be teaching the women and children standard education through utilization of eight (8-plus General awareness issues on health, climate, abuse, sex etc..) basic courses which are English, Math, Social Studies, Science, History, and Economics and computer course.

Women Care Group101 will carry out a well disciplined program thereby women and children will be encouraged to learn basic hygiene during the course of their study. Textbooks and writing materials will be provided; there will be a minimum of two- four voluntary teachers. The learning period will begin in the morning from around 8am. There will be Short breaks that will be lasting for an hour. Overall duration of the teaching including break shall be 7 hours. Voluntary teachers shall work with each other as team.

Methods and duration

The English course shall be the first followed by math before the rest of the courses durations of each course shall be 1 hour or more, additional minutes might be added when necessary.

There will be a general meeting every last day of the month within the teaching days. Volunteers, women and children will be encouraged to participate in the meeting. All issues will be addressed at the meeting.

Evaluation

Standardized reading and writing tests will be conducted at the start of the Big Success Education Center for the poor! program and again at the end of the school year to determine increases in reading speed and comprehension. However teachers will be testing students occasional and will be correcting errors to encourage learning efficiency. Additionally, those students with ADD will be tested to determine increased reading attention rates.

Assignments and points

Assignments shall be giving at every last day of the week of the teaching days, the assignments will carry points and the best student shall be awarded with a good grade and gifts at the graduation. This is to encourage them to become active and take their studies more seriously.

Big Success Education Center for the poor! Project is to enable at risk students and students with learning and reading disabilities to improve their reading skills to the point where they can succeed in school and develop the reading skills that will prepare them for high school and post secondary education. Studies have shown that poor readers, who are reading at a grade level or more behind, are more likely to be disruptive in the classroom, truant from school, and at risk of dropping out of high school.

The main objectives include:

1. Providing a measurable increase in reading speed, comprehension, and reading attention span.

The objective is that the students will double their reading speed and increase their reading skills by one to two grade levels by the end of the school year.

2. Enabling poor readers to access the general curriculum through the use of assistive reading technology to scan and read their textbooks and other classroom materials.

3. Providing learning disabled students with a multi-sensory reading alternative that will help them increase their reading speed to the point they can read on their own.

4. Helping learning and reading disabled students stay in their regular classroom with their peers, so they can continue learning in a least restrictive environment.

Widows are fighting legal battles against their families from their beds.

The abusive practices to which widows are subject is hear breaking. This describes steps being undertaken at the local level in many countries to challenge abuse of widows, and change cultural perceptions of widowhood.

Widowhood may have as little social or economic impact on widows as it does on widowers the lack of specific concern and recognition of the abuse of widows in the international human rights instruments, and recommends support for campaigns to remedy this is alarming considering how many lives has been lost due to the loose of a husband.

Widows are realizing that the support of other widows can replace and even surpass that received from their in-laws. Although the plight of widows has received little attention from the international women's movement, the fact that widows are free from conjugal control and are faced with the necessity to earn a living makes them ideal agents of change.

In Ghana, a grassroots "Ministry of Widows" rescues women banished from their homes and helps them find income-generating activities. In Kenya, the Widows and Orphans Societies help AIDS widows. In Africa, the widow's associations are relief and welfare-orientated. In India, the victim image has been shed, and women are becoming empowered Zambian widows, after the deaths of their husbands, face the loss of property and children at the hands of their in-laws. Those whose husbands have died of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), who are themselves infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are treated the worst.

About half of the cases seen by counselors at the center run by the Young Women's Christian Association in Lusaka are fighting legal battles against their families from their beds. Traditionally in Africa, a widow remains in her husband's village and is cared for by in-laws. With urbanization and difficult economic times, the modern case is different. Although the widow and her children are legally entitled to all household property, the family home, and 70% of outside assets (In-laws receive the other 30%.), the women fear beatings and bewitching if they claim their property. If the husband dies without a will, a legal representative is appointed to handle the estate. This person is often a brother who treats the appointment as a license to steal.

The widow does have legal control over the appointment, but fears reprisals. Courts do not oversee the administrator; the widow must take legal action if she is robbed. This requires withdrawing the original appointment, appointing the widow as the new administrator, and attempting to acquire the stolen property. This is quite difficult to do for a woman confined to her bed with AIDS even if she has children. Police refuse to help, even when the widow is threatened with death. In addition, customary practices for widows are abusive. The widow, who may have AIDS, can be beaten and made to crawl to the funeral ceremony; she is blamed for the death of her husband and often is forced to have sex with her brother-in-law (to prove she is free of her husband's spirit). In some cultures she must fast during the 3-day funeral and cannot bathe for a year afterwards. Individual stories are described. Women's groups worldwide are lobbying for stronger laws to protect widow's rights.

Global Capitalism And It's Impact On Poor Women.

The spread of global capitalism impacts poor women hardest, whether in the Third World nations many women are forced to leave or the First World nations where many have always lived in poverty or where they are compelled to migrate once the means of survival in their home countries are destroyed. Under globalization, the destruction wrought by neoliberal policies in both First and Third world nations cause women to lose ground in status, freedom, safety, education and to have diminished access to basic needs of food, water, housing and health care.

Structural adjustment policies are pre-conditions set by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund for loans to indebted countries, including provisions that indebted governments cooperate in cutting spending on social programs, slashing wages and eliminating labor controls, devaluing local currency, privatizing state enterprises, opening up markets to foreign investment, liberalizing imports and expanding exports.

Consistently, poor women of color from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia report.

the devastating effects of these policies:

Increasing poverty and rapidly deteriorating nutrition, health and labor conditions. When wages and food subsidies are cut, women & children’s nutrition suffers first. As public health care and education vanishes, women suffer from lack of prenatal care and girls are the first to be kept from school to help at home or go to work. When export-oriented agribusiness moves in, peasant families are evicted from their lands for corporate farms, and women become seasonal farmworkers instead of land-owning farmers. Lands once used to raise staples like rice are used instead for raising shrimp, oranges, orchids—all for export, not for local consumption--or for golf courses and luxury hotels for tourists. In short, SAPs lead to a destruction of both subsistence economies and social service systems in Third World nations so that women have few viable options to sustain their families but to leave them behind and migrate in search of work. Usually, women go from villages to cities within their home countries first, and then migrate to the First World for a job in service work, manufacturing and sex work.

Thus, poor immigrant women workers and workfare workers share many struggles under global capitalism, starting with the jobs they are typically relegated to in the service industry. These women perform much the same work under strikingly similar conditions: invisible, unsafe, unsanitary, hazardous, service work for low or no wages. But the way that their labor is seen—or, rather, unseen and unrecognized—binds them even more closely.

Work performed by poor immigrant women and workfare workers is neither viewed nor structured as contract labor, or even as a service they provide for which they should be compensated. Instead, their labor is constructed as charity, opportunity, privilege, community service, repayment of a debt to society, and/or as punishment for a crime. In the case of workfare workers, their "crimes" are being poor, homeless or "unemployed." In the case of immigrants, they are criminalized for entering the country (presumed "illegally," of course) and for consuming resources to which they are thought to have no rights. In both cases, employers invoke these constructions of immigrant and workfare workers as undeserving, non-citizen, punishable, criminals indebted to society in order to coerce these workers into exploitative work, to try to justify this exploitation and to counter organizing among these workers. In all cases, the prevailing public opinion is that these workers should feel lucky to have the “opportunity,” and they are certainly better off with it than without it.

By refusing to recognize the services performed by these laborers as work, by defining it instead as opportunity, privilege, charity, repayment and even punishment, employers deny these workers the prevailing wages, protections and rights afforded regular, "citizen" workers.

Poverty is a global problem affecting everyone even in the EU Countries

WHAT WCG101 IS HOPING TO ACHIEVE IS A LIFE FULL OF LIFE AND HOPE FOR THE HELPLESS AND THE POOR!

Causes of poverty and inequality

Some people imagine that in a rich region like the EU no one can be poor or if they are it must be the result of some personal failings or problems. However, this is not the case. The overall persistent high level of poverty in the EU suggest that poverty is primarily the consequence of the way society is organized and resources are allocated, whether these are financial or other resources such as access to housing, health and social services, education and other economic, social and cultural services. Indeed, the fact that there are very different levels of poverty in different Member States demonstrates clearly that different approaches to allocating resources and opportunities leads to different outcomes. The least unequal societies in Europe tend to have the lowest levels of poverty. This is primarily because these Governments chooses to give priority to ensuring adequate minimum income levels and ensuring good access to services, through the social protection system and through guaranteeing minimum wage levels. They are usually the most effective at redistributing wealth through the tax and other systems. This means that the decisions over how to eradicate poverty in the end are political choices about the kind of society we want.

Key factors

In terms of individuals, some key factors are seen as making a person more at risk of being in poverty such as:
• unemployment or having a poor quality (i.e. low paid or precarious) job as this limits access to a decent income and cuts people off from social networks;
• low levels of education and skills because this limits people's ability to access decent jobs to develop themselves and participate fully in society;
• the size and type of family i.e. large families and lone parent families tend to be at greater risk of poverty because they have higher costs, lower incomes and more difficulty in gaining well paid employment;
• gender - women are generally at higher risk of poverty than men as they are less likely to be in paid employment, tend to have lower pensions, are more involved in unpaid caring responsibilities and when they are in work, are frequently paid less ;
• disability or ill-health because this limits ability to access employment and also leads to increased day to day costs;
• being a member of minority ethnic groups such as the Roma and immigrants/undocumented migrants as they suffer particularly from discrimination and racism and thus have less chance to access employment, often are forced to live in worse physical environments and have poorer access to essential services;
• living in a remote or very disadvantaged community where access to services is worse.
All these factors create additional barriers and difficulties, but should be seen within the overall structural context of how a particular country chooses to distribute wealth and tackle inequality.

The day-to-day struggle

This means that the reality of poverty in the EU is much more a day-to-day struggle to live and survive which can adversely affect your health and psychological well-being and put stress on your personal relationships.
Living in poverty can mean:
• becoming isolated from family and friends;
• lacking hope and feeling powerless and excluded with little control over the decisions that affect your day to day life;
• lacking information about the supports and services available to you;
• having problems in getting your basic needs met and accessing decent housing, health services and schools and life long learning opportunities;
• living in an unsafe neighbourhood with high levels of crime and violence and poor environmental conditions or in a remote and isolated rural area;
• going without very basic necessities because you may not be able to afford essential utilities like water, heat and electricity or to buy healthy food or new clothing or to use public transport;
• being unable to afford to buy medicines or visit the dentist;
• living from day to day with no savings or reserves for times of crisis such as losing a job or falling ill and thus falling into debt;
• being exploited and forced into illegal situations;
• experiencing racism and discrimination;
• being unable to participate in normal social and recreational life such as going to the pub or cinema or sports events or visiting friends or buying birthday presents for family members.
Overall, the reality of poverty in the EU is that it affects many aspects of people's lives and limits people's access to their fundamental rights. People affected often experience a range of different disadvantages which combine to reinforce each other and trap them in poverty. Poverty limits the opportunity for people to reach their full potential. For instance, children growing up in poverty are more likely to suffer poor health, do less well at school and become the next generation of adults at risk of unemployment and long-term poverty.

Views of those living in poverty

Lack of basic necessities
"I can afford only cheap food; fruit and vegetables to feed children is too expensive; fish is not affordable; healthy food is too expensive for me."
"The problem is not that we run out of money occasionally. The real problem is that we live our entire lives this way and our children grow up into this too."
"In Spain the apartments for tourists are empty during the calm periods. On the other side there are a lot of homeless who have no roof above their head. How can we explain those injustices to our children?"
"I cannot repair my broken TV."

Isolation
"I have lost friends as I cannot participate in their activities; even to participate in self-help groups needs money and time; I'm short of money and time to participate in discussions."
"I cannot afford a daily paper; books, especially scientific literature is too expensive."
Bureaucracy and lack of information
"The system is too complicated, I don't know where to get what."
"I have slept in cardboard boxes. I had the choice to die on the street or to take back my life in my own hands. I went to social services with the question to help me to find a house. I was confronted with an enormous bureaucracy. I had to tell several times my story, each time again and it took years before I got a house."
"Every time I tell my life to civil servants I receive a lot of compassion, but rules prevent effective aid."
Lack of respect and lack of hope
"The way people look at you is humiliating. You are not considered a human being."
"Sometimes you get the feeling that animals are better protected because if you beat a dog you will be sentenced and maybe put into prison whereas if you beat someone I am not sure that you will always be punished for that. My feeling is that dogs are more respected and better treated than Gypsies."
"I don't see any progress since years. I have no future."
"I feel a little bit like Don Quixote. I am fighting against windmills here and there and there is no real hope anymore."
Lack of decent work
"I have no work and no housing. How can I form my life if I have no work?"
"I must admit that to you that I work illegally and this is not because I think it is good. I am fully aware of the consequences, but this is the only way for me to get a job."

Fear for one's children
"It is impossible for me to invite the friends of my children at home, because my home is so small. So my children at their turn are not invited any more. Thus they become also excluded. We are obliged to lead a hidden life."
"My children cannot participate in school holidays for skiing or a language week abroad. Training for lifelong learning is not affordable. I cannot afford cultural activities."
"My children will inherit my poverty."

Free Education Project For Children In Poor Communities

We hope to provide a free quality educations for children in various poor communities and we are planning to erect new schools in communities that are unable to afford education for their kids in Asia/Africa

Objectives:

To build more schools in poor communities
To provide teaching materials for less privilege children
To discourage poor families using their children to begging as a means of survival, in place of that we will provide a training work shop and job to help them sustain themselves
To provide free food at school and school uniform cloths for the less privilege children

Vision:

Our vision is to make sure no kid is denied the right to a quality education irrespective or their cultural background ,race or statue.

I am writing not as a woman /man with statutes or special rights but as a human being with feelings and heart beat. My heart bleeds each day I wake up and I am not sure of what to make of my thoughts or feelings. I feel for the pain and anguish the poor has to go through every day. I used to be a victim myself. It's heard to tell what I feel. What You are about to read is not to be ignored please share or make a donation.

There are millions of babies born everyday without a chance of making it the third world countries, some of those babies could be future lawyers, doctors, scientist that might discover the best cure to the diseases and plagues that has befallen humanity, some could be super stars that will win our hearts and make us happy just by listening to them or watching them in TV’s shows. The list is endless but do they deserve it? Neither do we but we still can turn the tables around if we think deep and feel deeper.

There are women who are hard working and good mothers but poverty has rid us of such amazing women. Women are the pillars of our society they are our back bone and we can’t do without women. What makes them special? To start with you are conceived by a woman and she nurtured you. Even if she left us due to circumstance. Sometimes we blame our mothers for living us to grow up alone. Sometimes we ask why she has to die when we are so young, well lets not forget that life has it’s own faces as such we can’t predict the future but surely women generally are special people and such we should respect them.

Women in Poverty

To understand the plight of poor women around the world, consider the stories of Ade,

Runa, and Reina. On the outskirts of Ibadan, Nigeria, Ade cultivates a small, sparsely

planted plot with a baby on her back and other visibly undernourished children nearby.

Her efforts to grow an improved soybean variety, which could have fortified her

Children’s diet, failed because she lacked the extra time to tend the new crop, did not have a spouse who could help her, and could not afford hired labor. Runa, a young woman with boundless energy, piercing eyes, and a warm smile, founded and runs the Self-Employed Women’s Association in the Indian city of Luck now, one of the country’s most disadvantaged regions.

Until a year ago, she had been unable to obtain credit from local banks for her impressively well organized business, which now employs about 5,000 women home workers who sell chikan embroidery in national and international markets. Reina is a former guerrilla fighter in El Salvador who is being taught how to bake bread under a post-civil war reconstruction program. But as she says, “The only thing I have is this training and I don’t want to be just a baker. I have other dreams for my life.”

A farmer, an entrepreneur, and a former guerrilla— the working lives of these three women have little in common, except that they, along with most women worldwide,

face similar obstacles to increasing their economic power: no “slack” time to invest in additional work that could bring in needed income; lack of access to commercial credit; and training in traditionally female— and mostly low-wage— skills. These obstacles differentiate the work experiences of men and women, exacerbate women’s poverty, and sustain a vicious cycle of impoverishment from one generation to the next.

They also help to account for a disturbing global trend: the feminization of poverty. When the yardstick used to measure the degree of people’s poverty is their level of well-being, women are traditionally found to be more impoverished than men. But poverty is more commonly defined according to income, and today, although the gap between the two sexes is decreasing in terms of wellbeing, it is increasing in terms of income. The evidence is imperfect, but current trends suggest that women account for a growing proportion of those people who are considered poor on the basis of income, not only in industrial countries such as the United States, but also in the developing world.

POOR WOMEN, POOR WORLD

This feminization of poverty should be considered a legitimate foreign policy concern. Because women are increasingly economic actors and heads of households as well as mothers, their poverty slows global economic growth. Moreover, in poor countries, their disadvantage feeds a destructive spiral of poverty, population growth, and environmental degradation. In a world of blurring borders, women’s poverty

creates enclaves of want in the midst of wealth and puts rising pressures on the developed world, whether by fueling costly humanitarian crises or by unleashing— for the first time— waves of females who migrate without spouses to seek work in richer countries.

Global literacy statistics show that in 1990 there were only 74 literate women for every 100 literate men. Schooling statistics reveal a similar trend. Worldwide, 77 million girls of primary school age (6-11 years old) are out of school, compared with 52 million boys— a gap that becomes even larger when girls’ higher overall dropout rates, absenteeism, and repetition levels are taken into account.

Women Care Group101/ Planting Seeds of Hope

Despite the important role that women in developing countries play in agriculture, they have often been

denied the attention and assistance given to their male colleagues. The question is why should women work hard while men take the credits.

Our voice

The majority of women obtain low-wage work because of persistent sexual discrimination in terms of employment and wages. In Honduras, for example, coffee and tobacco farmers prefer to hire girls and women as laborers because they are willing to accept lower wages and are more reliable workers. Especially in poor countries, female labor is primarily sought for low-paid positions in services, agriculture, small-scale commerce, and in the growing, unregulated manufacturing and agribusiness industries, which pay their workers individual rather than family wages, offer seasonal or part-time employment, and carry few or no benefits. Hence, this explains the seemingly contradictory trends of women’s increased economic participation alongside their growing impoverishment.

BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE

The vicious cycle of poverty that unfolds when women work more and earn less and children, as a result, get less food and maternal time, is both commonplace and hard to break. But recent studies have also made clear that while households headed or maintained by women may lack resources, they are generally more “resourceful” than their male counterparts. In Brazil, for instance, economist Duncan Thomas has found that income in the hands of mothers has an effect on child health that is almost 20 times greater than income that is controlled by the father. Similar results have been reported in Chile, Guatemala, Kenya, and Malawi. The key appears to be that in households where women control resources, they prefer (whether for reasons of nature or nurture) to invest scarce resources in child well-being. In Jamaica, for instance, studies have found that female-headed households spend more on food and other family-oriented goods than male-headed households.

These differences in the way that men and women prefer to spend scarce resources in poor households suggest that the income that poor women earn can yield higher health or social benefits than that earned by men. They are a strong argument for the desirability of expanding poor women’s economic opportunities— precisely the area where there has been little, if any, advancement in recent decades. In short, the question before individual nations and the international community at large is not why they should invest more in women, but how. Nations need to take measures that reinforce the virtuous cycle between poor women’s and children’s well-being. They also need to avoid actions that aggravate the obstacles that

women and children already face.

A good place to start would be avoiding the unintended consequences of social and economic policies that can increase women’s work burdens— such as reducing those public services that cushion the impact of negative economic shocks (see Ricardo Hausmann’s article “Will Volatility Kill Market Democracy?” on pp. 54–67 in the Winter 1997 issue of Foreign Policy). Taking such measures without providing complementary policies that adequately “protect” poor women in their multiple roles as producers and reproducers is likely to set in motion, or intensify, the poverty cycle.

Enlightened approaches such as providing women with access to reliable credit and savings can have multiplier effects that raise poor women’s productivity in the home, as well as productivity and earnings in the market. With that in mind, policymakers should also stop promoting well-meaning programs that ignore women’s traditional productive roles, the economic value of their time, and their domestic time constraints. One project, for

example, established a cooperative for rural women in western Kenya that produced potholders for sale in Nairobi at a price lower than the cost of the banana fiber that was used to make them. There are several other specific areas of national and international policy where changes and improvements could yield great dividends for poor women and for the developing world in general.

Governments in all countries

should take the following measures: Expand substantially the access of poor women to family-planning and reproductive health services. Many successful reproductive health programs offer women a package of health services for themselves— and sometimes their children— bundled into one visit, in one location, which saves them both time and transportation costs. Boosting women’s capacities to generate income will also increase their access to higher quality health services that may be purchased through private providers. Adopt education reform agendas designed to increase the quantity and quality of, first primary, and then secondary, schooling for girls. With the support of international agencies, innovative efforts to increase girls’ access to schools are under way in Bangladesh,

Pakistan

, and other countries. These include giving scholarships and engaging families and communities in the task

of getting and keeping girls enrolled.

If you educate a girl, you educate generations.” Create incentives for the private sector to expand women’s access to agencies that offer credit and savings services. Microfinance operations, like the well-known Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, have succeeded in providing access to reliable credit and savings services to more than 3 million female borrowers in developing countries, but such operations still reach only about 5 percent of those in need of their services. They also provide benefits in other areas. One female microcredit client in Bangladesh, for example, mentioned that the profits from her expanded business had enabled her to buy a rickshaw for her unemployed husband to use as taxi. As a result, she mentioned in passing, he had stopped beating her.

Shadowy figures lurking on the fringe

The boys' choir from Zambia sang in churches, schools and shopping malls across the United States. In exchange for their hard work, the boys were promised an education, wages that could be sent home to family and a school that would be built in Africa.

People who heard the 12-member a cappella choir were touched. They reached into their wallets and purses and offered up donations. The boys, ranging in age from 12 to 17, sang a mixture of gospels in English and their native tongue. They brought in more than $1 million, yet saw little of it. They received room and board and the occasional token payment, but no wages, no education, no school back home.

The boys are among the faces of modern-day slavery - in their case, trafficked into the United States under the guise of a faith-based organization that preyed on them.

"They were brought here for a specific purpose and that was to get as much out of them - with no regard for them or their futures," says Sal Orrantia, a U.S. immigration agent who worked the case.

The number of people ensnared in modern-day slavery ranges from 12 million, according to the United Nations, to 27 million, according to leading anti-slavery activists like Kevin Bales. Another prominent activist, Siddharth Kara of Harvard, estimates the number could be as high as 30 million. The broad range is the result of challenges associated with tracking a practice hidden in shadows and finding a consensus on how best to define and measure it.

Experts agree the vast majority of slaves today live in Asia and the Pacific, where they are held against their will as a result of debt bondage in agriculture and domestic work. Millions of others across the globe are used for sexual exploitation.

"To me, slavery means one person who is completely under the control of another person, that they use violence to maintain that control, they exploit them, make money out of them and that the [victim] just can't walk away," says Bales.

"Those are the fundamental criteria really for what slavery has always been about throughout all of human history."

Bales heads Free the Slaves, an organization that works to liberate exploited men, women and children across the globe and make sure they remain free.

"Our ultimate goal is the end of slavery on planet Earth. We really believe that's possible," Bales says.

He says modern-day slavery must be attacked on four fronts - politics, business, religion and society - for it to be eradicated. He compares the current fight to the global determination to eradicate small pox decades ago.

Today's slavery differs greatly from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, when from 1501 to 1867 an estimated 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the Americas. Back then, slave owners were typically prominent members of society, and a massive economic system was based on the global institution of slavery.

Today, enslavers are mostly shadowy figures lurking in the fringes.

"Slavery has been pushed to the very edge of society," says Bales. "It's really standing on the brink of its own extinction. And if we understand that and get together and give it one really hard boot, we can kick it over the edge into extinction."

Bales' mission began more than a decade ago when he first met a young woman named Seba in Paris. At age 9, Seba was taken from her home in Mali by a family friend, who promised the girl a better life in France. Seba cooked for the friend's family, looked after her children – and was often punished with beatings.

"Once in 1992, I was late going to get the children from school; my mistress and her husband were furious with me and beat [me] and then threw me out on the street," Seba told Bales in his 1999 best-seller, "Disposable People."

"I had nowhere to go; I didn't understand anything, and I wandered the streets. After some time, her husband found me and took me back to their house. There they stripped me naked, tied my hands behind my back, and began to whip me with a wire attached to a broomstick."

Seba was freed when a neighbor heard her screams and called police. She had been held for so long she didn't know her age when she was freed.

Across the globe, the stories of modern-day slavery bear a similar theme.

In Ghana, a 9-year-old boy hauls heavy equipment from boat to shore in a fishing village under the midday sun. At the end of a long, hot day, sometimes he'll only get a beating.

In Haiti, a group of teens stand frightened just before they're raped - initiation into forced prostitution. The ring is run by criminals in Port-au-Prince's notorious Cite Soleil slum, a trade that survived last year's massive earthquake and continues to thrive.

And in Texas, the voices of the Zambia Acappella Boys Choir were used to profit their captor, a Christian missionary who recruited the boys from Africa and brought them to the U.S. in the late 1990s.

The missionary, Keith Grimes, ran a faith-based group called TTT: Partners in Education. The federal government began investigating in 1998 after church members in Texas filed complaints raising concern about the treatment of the boys.

When Grimes died of natural causes, the investigation ended. In 2001, the U.S. Department of Labor ruled that Grimes' group was liable for nearly $1 million in back wages and civil penalties for the members of the choir. To date, none of the boys has received any of the money because Grimes died and his company was bankrupt.

Across the globe, dozens of organizations like Bales' work with governments and groups on the front lines to crack down on slavery.

In northern India, a rehabilitation center called Bal Vikas Ashram helps children ages 8 to 14 recover from enslavement by carpet loom owners. It also helps organize raids on slave owners. In the last year, the group helped free 111 children.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, human rights groups work to free slaves being used by warring factions in mines rich in gold and other metals. In some cases, villagers are snatched at gunpoint and forced to work; other times, women and girls are forced into the sex trade around the mines.

In the United States, groups work with women and girls to recover from the trauma of forced prostitution, where they are raped and held against their will by pimps.

Shamere McKenzie says she became enslaved at 19. She needed $3,000 for college and met a young man on the campus of St. John's University in New York who said he could help. He turned out to be a pimp who kept her captive for a year and a half.

"When I told him I didn't want to do this anymore, I remember being choked until I peed on myself," McKenzie says. "I was just choked, beaten up, thrown on the floor and beaten.

"A lot of people asked why did I do it for so long if it was something I didn't want to do. But being in a situation like that, you're controlled by fear."

She says her pimp had anywhere from three to 12 women and girls under his control at any time. On a typical day, McKenzie says she would wake up around 9 a.m., be sent to a strip club around noon and work the streets until 7 p.m.

She and the others would then sleep until 10 p.m. before being sent back out. McKenzie tried to run away three times, but her pimp would threaten to kill her and harm her family. "All the girls were afraid of him."

McKenzie's prostitution ended when police stopped the car she was driving. Her pimp and other prostitutes were in the car, including a 12-year-old girl. Even though she was being held against her will, she was charged with transferring a minor across state lines and convicted. The pimp was convicted as well.

Tina Frundt is now helping McKenzie in her recovery. Frundt is the founder of Courtney's House, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group that helps women and girls who have been exploited by the sex trade.

Frundt says she was forced into prostitution at age 13 in Cleveland, Ohio. Since Courtney's House began in 2008, the organization has helped 500 victims escape sex trafficking. The average age of girls being forced into slavery in the U.S., Frundt says, is between 11 and 14.

"In the U.S., we commercialize forced prostitution and pimping - we glamorize it with 'pimp this' and 'pimp that,'" she says. "And so, of course, we make it look like it's a choice. ... And overseas we make it look sad and that these girls are forced in.

"But the truth and reality is: In Thailand, girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' In Honduras, girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' In the U.S., the girls call their traffickers 'pimp.' So there is no difference."

She says Americans need to wake up about the realities of what is happening on the streets in their country. "We have an epidemic."

"Being raped, held hostage, tied up is not something that you choose to do," she says. "How did I get out? Unfortunately, it's how many of our kids get out. I ran to the police and they arrested me."

Even though she was a child, she spent the next year in juvenile detention because prostitution is illegal. Her pimp remained at large, Frundt says.

It's an all-too-common theme for those combating human trafficking.

"These are people, whether they're from another country or whether they're enslaved at home … who have been trapped in a situation that they can't get out of," says Luis CdeBaca, who heads the State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, an office created in 2000.

CdeBaca, an ambassador-at-large, was appointed by President Obama in 2009 to coordinate U.S. government activities to bring an end to modern-day slavery.

He says traffickers prey on the vulnerabilities of the victims - who many times are seeking a better life - and "they pervert it."

"Instead of being the opportunity that the victims want, it becomes the trap," says CdeBaca. "One of the things that's horrible about the human trafficking situation in the 21st century is that you can sell a person over and over and over."

He says governments must better train law enforcement about the proliferation of human trafficking, and that non-government organizations must continue pushing governments to do more.

"If you don't have a cultural impact where people have decided together to say 'no' to modern slavery, there's no reason why law enforcement should be out there doing this on their own," he says. "It really starts when the cultures change."

Hillary Clinton at UN: 'Women's progress is human progress'

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered those words at the UN Friday as she marked the 15th anniversary of her speech at the World Conference on Women in Beijing.

She cited the case of a 10-year-old girl in Yemen who recently went to court to demand – and eventually receive – a divorce from a forced marriage. But she also cited a recent Economist cover story that explains how years of gendercide, primarily across a swath of Asia from China to India, means that the world has 100 million fewer girls than it should.

Dr. Lubna al-Kazi, a renown advocate for women’s right to vote and run for office in Kuwait, describes changes in political environment in Kuwait in the past five years and obstacles that women experience trying to implement their rights. Dr. al-Karzi stressed that despite some improvements, women in Kuwait still face a “marble ceiling” when it comes to taking leading positions. She served as an advisor for the Kuwait report in Freedom House’s survey on women’s rights.

Millions of US workers – including parents of infants – are harmed by weak or nonexistent laws on paid leave, breastfeeding accommodation, and discrimination against workers with family responsibilities. Workers face grave health, financial, and career repercussions as a result.The pursuit of equal rights for women through international law has been a slow process. The principle that everyone is entitled to rights "without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex..." was given voice in Article 2 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.However, the Declaration was non-binding and it took campaigners over 30 years to cajole the international community intoconcrete legal action against gender injustice. The Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979.

CEDAW has been described as a bill of rights for women; it spells out the areas in which women experience discrimination and commits countries to amend their laws, construct national gender policies and create institutions to deliver them.

Although CEDAW has been ratified by almost all countries, overall global progress remains disappointing. Over twenty states have exercised reservations in the ratification process, a formal device which permits exemption from contentious sections. Ineffective enforcement of national legislation has further restrained the pace of reform, as has the failure of the US to ratify the treaty.

A positive development in 2010 was the approval by the UN General Assembly of a new entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, to be known as UN Women. This new body is designed to achieve greater impact by merging the four UN agencies previously engaged in gender issues, with access to a minimum annual budget of $500 million, more than double the previous combined resource.
Discrimination

The movement for women’s rights has grown as the counterweight to strong historical beliefs that women should occupy a domestic environment and that men should enjoy exclusive rights to property.

The process of ending discrimination against women is relatively advanced in modern industrialized economies. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa are amending colonial-era laws which prevent women from owning land and property. The HIV and AIDS crisis has accentuated the injustice, given that over 30% of households in the region are now headed by women.

This transition to more equal rights ismost problematic in Islamic countries where elements of Sharia law governing the behaviour of women remain in place. In extreme examples, these ancient laws declaim that adultery is a crime when carried out by women, and make it virtually impossible for a man to be convicted of rape.

Shirin Ebadi, the Iranian Nobel laureate, believes that discrimination against women in Islamic countries does not accurately reflect the teachings of the Koran. She advocates a reinterpretation of Sharia law to recognise women's rights.

Economic Inequality

A culture of discrimination denies equality for women by restricting access to the basic ingredients of economic status – education and decent work.

Education is ultimately more effective than laws in empowering women to overcome the barriers to equality. Educated girls are more likely to resist pressures to marry too young, to have too many children and to resign themselves to unpaid work. They have greater competence as mothers and as active agents in their communities.

However, a 2010 UN progress report states that access to primary and secondary education for girls is “still out of reach for many developing regions” and that 36.5 million girls of primary age are out of school.Just over half of all women in developing countries perform unpaid labour, typically a demanding combination of subsistence farming and caring for an extended family.

Beyond the domestic environment, women’s livelihoods are predominantly in low paid, temporary and informal sectors. In Asia, there is a concentration of women's labour at the bottom of the production chain in factories, many offering poor conditions of work.

Lacking security or safety nets, these “flexible pools of labour” are vulnerable to recession or unstable prices of food and fuel, precisely the economic circumstances of recent years.

The opportunity cost of denying women entry to business environments is illustrated by the success of microcredit schemes, especially in South Asia. The pioneering Grameen bank of Bangladesh reports that over 90% of its borrowers are women, an inversion of mainstream banking profiles.

Violence against Women

In launching his 2008 campaign, UNite to End Violence Against Women, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon observed that “at least one out of every three women is likely to be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.”

Such high level concern about gender-based violence has emerged only in relatively recent years. Whilst rich countries are by no means free of violence against women, the problems - which range from low level domestic violence to some of the most horrific abuses within the human family - are perceived to be more serious in developing countries.

Circumstances of extreme poverty or conflict are indeed associated with higher incidence of violence against women. For example, sex trafficking flourishes in regions where hardship weakens the natural bonds of family life, already eroded by traditional attitudes towards women.

In conflict zones such as Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur, Northern Uganda and Sierra Leone, rape has been exploited as a weapon of war. The extent of such abuse may never be known, and perpetrators rarely called to account.

Examples of appalling gender-based violence extend beyond the smokescreen of poverty and war. None is more horrifying than the practice of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide, associated particularly with China and India.

In these countries the availability of modern ultrasound technology has outpaced the enlightenment of primitive desires for male children. In China, 118 boys were born in 2005 for every 100 girls. In India, the UN Population Fund estimates that 5% of female births are “missing” for the period 2001-2007.

Similar deep-rooted cultural discrimination accounts for the widespread practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Africa. Despite being outlawed in most of the 28 countries where it survives, FGM endangers perhaps as many as three million girls each year.

African Women right still a long way to go!

The lives of middle class Nigerian women differ greatly from those of most western women. Since pre-colonial days women retained certain economic opportunities within the social system. In fact, before the middle of the twentieth century, Nigerian women traditionally played a more significant role in society than did western women. Traditional or tribal society in Nigeria expected women to be significant wage earners in the family. They labored in farming, fishing, herding, and commerce (for instance, pottery, cloth-making, and craft work) alongside Nigerian men. In fact, women traditionally had the right to profit from their work, although the money usually served as a contribution to the family income. This economic freedom was much different from many western societies, where women had to fight for the right to work. These traditions still survive in modern Nigeria
However, Nigerian men do not value the economic contributions of their wives. They do not view the woman's job and household work as especially taxing. For the most part, Nigerian men consistently take their wives for granted. Moreover, even with economic opportunities, Nigerian women lack certain rights. As a rule, men do not have any legal responsibility for their offspring, and they often abandon women, expecting them to carry the financial burden of the family.

Marriage
The Nigerian institution of marriage is unconventional by western standards. The traditional and Islamic systems of polygamy flourish within every social class. Women expect very little from men in terms of companionship, personal care, and fidelity. Their relationships exist without the emotional elements.
Polygamy is a crucial component of many women's lives. Women depend on the other wives of their husbands. The younger co-wives take on many of the household and financial responsibilities. As women get older they have the comfort of knowing that the burden of their marriage does not fall solely on their shoulders.
A woman's postion in society changes vastly once they marry since she becomes a possession, with relatively no rights in her husband's family. In fact, the husband's mother and sisters have much more of an influence over him than his own wife. The wife resents this lack of control or even respect within their marriage.
The Nigerian system of inheritance reflects the lack of male responsibility to his wife and children. If a husband dies, the woman usually receives nothing, although the law entitles her to a share. If she has no children, the treatment is worse. Since property can only pass between the same sexes, women can never inherit from their fathers.
Within marriage, women have an obligation to have children. Traditionally, society blames the woman for a marriage without children. Society not only condemns women who cannot have children, but unmarried and divorced women as well.
In recent years, the support of the co-wives has diminished. Modern developments of mandatory education, urbanization, and capitalism are changing the Nigerian society. Since 1960, educational opportunities have expanded for women. Slowly men are beginning to see the value of higher education for their wives. Now, more often than not, they send their daughters to school for an education.

Abortion
Abortion is still illegal in Nigeria. In fact, women make up the strongest opposition to it. Surprisingly, men seem to be much more willing to accept the idea than most middle class women.

Political Roles of Women
Today women play a minimal role in politics, although the 1979 Constitution guaranteed their rights. In pre-colonial Nigeria, women had a much larger position in politics. Unfortunately, the western influences restricted women's participation. Now, women have relatively little opportunity to become involved. The political parties do not look favorably upon female candidates.
As western values gained influence in colonial Nigeria, women lost some of their traditional rights. For the most part, women in Nigeria have not attempted to rise in their maleidominated society and patriarchy continues to thrive. But as time passes, women are beginning to demand some equality. Perhaps they will be able to reconcile the rights of the past with the freedoms of a modern age.

Nigerian Parliament Passes Long-Needed Access to Information Law

The Nigerian parliament has finally passed a Freedom of Information bill after nearly 11 years of legislative gridlock. The law will allow citizens to access all records from public institutions, or from private organizations when they are providing public services. Members of the government deliberately denying such right could face up until 3 years prison.

The law still needs to be passed by the Nigerian senate; however, it is believed the body will only make minor changes. President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed that he will ratify the law as soon as possible.

Freedom House celebrates the creation of a law that guarantees government transparency, and calls on the Nigerian authorities to assure that the law is correctly implemented.

WCG101 has the following key programmes to empower the local women:

Education (Literacy) and awareness
Saving and credit (micro-credit)
Income generative skills training

Teaching English Language for young women/Girls

WCG101 runs women education classes in much needy communities. WCG101 has
trained over 20 women in literacy classes in NOV 2009, which are taught by
other local women and overseen
by the women’s programme expert to help everyone learn to a good standard.
Women need to be able
to speak good English to access career options through the internet,
through authentic materials in the English language and because companies prefer to
employ people with good spoken English.

The Local women then receive skills-orientated training
so that they can generate some income through projects
such as vegetable farming (organic and non organic), livestock,
incense making, candle making, dry food making,
hand crafts made at our work shop.

They have regular meetings and save some money every month in their
saving-credit groups. The women are also
given training in organic agriculture to help the organic movement, which is labour
intensive and to give people a chance to meet, talk, learn and exchange views
with others in the movement.

WCG101 will be indebted to any volunteers with experience in this area.
The forage development project aims to save women time by having grass closer to
hand to feed their animals, which is their major source of income

time for you to learn about the local women before you start your
actual work and you need patience for that. Working in the
community is not like a computer program, which is preset;
you click and it works. You will be working with women
of a totally different culture and lifestyle. Your steps
will work slowly but sure works!.
