Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, producer and model. Houston was the most awarded female act of all time, according toGuinness World Records. Her list of awards includes 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010.

Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11. After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. Houston was the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits ("Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All", "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", "So Emotional" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"). She was the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Top Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on the Billboardmagazine year-end charts. Houston's 1985 debut album Whitney Houston, became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone's best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Her second studio album Whitney (1987), became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart.Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know",[8] influenced several African-American female artists to follow in her footsteps.

Houston's first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The movie'soriginal soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single "I Will Always Love You", became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period. The album makes her the only female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). The Preacher's Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history. Three years after the release of her fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998), she renewed her recording contract with Arista Records. She released her fifth studio albumJust Whitney in 2002, and the Christmas-themed One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. In 2009, Houston released her seventh studio album I Look to You. On February 11, 2012, Houston died of unknown causes in Beverly Hills, California.She was staying at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in town for the 54th Grammy Awards the next day.

After Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera is the artist who emerged from the late-Nineties teen-pop explosion with the longest career legs. An army brat, Aguilera spent her early childhood traveling with her family from Texas to Japan to New Jersey. She began singing young, dominating the talent shows in Wexler, Pennsylvania, where she moved at age seven with her mother and sister following her parents' divorce. (Aguilera's father was abusive, a topic she's explored in songs, including "I'm OK" from 2002's Stripped, and she no longer speaks with him.)

In 1990, Aguilera made her first TV appearance, performing "A Sunday Kind of Love" on Star Search (she lost), and began regularly singing the national anthem at national hockey, baseball and football games in Pittsburgh. Three years later, she joined the cast of The New Mickey Mouse Club TV show, where she appeared alongside future stars Timberlake and Spears, as well as 'N Sync's JC Chasez and actors Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell, and earned the nickname "the Diva." After the show finished in 1994, Aguilera made occasional recordings, including a song, "Reflection," for the 1998 Disney film Mulan, shortly after which she was signed to RCA. "Reflection" was nominated for a Golden Globe and became an Adult Contemporary hit, hitting Number 19 on that chart, but with Christina Aguilera (Number One, 1999), the 19-year-old singer aimed for, and got, an audience closer to her own age. The album spun off four big hits in 1999 and 2000, three of them Number Ones — "Genie in a Bottle," "What a Girl Wants" and "Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" — with "I Turn to You" going to Number Three. Aguilera's rendition of the Nat King Cole staple "The Christmas Song," from her holiday album, My Kind of Christmas (Number 28, 2000), went to Number 18. Aguilera also released a Latin pop album, Mi Reflejo (Number 27, 2000). A year later, Aguilera teamed up with Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink and Missy Elliott to record "Lady Marmalade" (Number One, 2001) for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, and made a guest appearance on Ricky Martin's "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" (Number 13, 2001).

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was groomed for stardom early. Born on September 4th, 1981, she began singing, dancing and performing in talent shows in her native Houston at age seven, and by high school she and cousin Kelly Rowland and school chums LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett were singing together, in a group that was later managed by Beyoncé's father and Rowland's guardian, Matthew Knowles.

The act was first called Girl's Tyme (the name under which the group performed on Star Search in 1992), then, by the time they signed to Columbia in 1997, Destiny's Child. She also worked with her new beau Jay-Z on his "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" (Number Four). Beyoncé's own Dangerously in Love was released in June 2003 and entered the charts at Number One, buoyed by its incredibly infectious lead single, "Crazy in Love," which went to Number One for two months. The Sean Paul-featuring "Baby Boy" also sat at the top of the charts; "Me, Myself and I" and "Naughty Girl" helped the album move more than 4 million copies.

In April 2010, Twain announced plans for her own TV show, entitled Why Not? with Shania Twain. The show debuted on May 8, 2011 on OWN. Twain returned to American Idol as a guest mentor for a week where the top 6 contestants showcased her songs. After the conclusion of the ninth season Twain was very close to becoming a judge but ultimately it was Jennifer Lopez who got the job.

On June 8, 2011, at a press conference at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Twain announced that she will headline Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for two years. On the eve of her follow-up, “Carnival Ride,” she’s entitled to a few butterflies — or a whole swarm of them if she wants.
“It’s so anticipated. Not just by the public, but by us too,” she says of the disc, which hit stores last Tuesday, in an interview before its release. “The whole ‘Can we top the first one?’ mind-set sets in.”
But Underwood says she won’t make the mistake of measuring success strictly by the numbers, especially since her debut set the bar improbably high.
