Are Female Oriented Radio Stations Sexist?

Why do women like to listen to women’s radio stations? Women like to listen to radio stations that have programs on issues that interest them. They are concerned about being better parents while holding down a full-time job. They also want to know what is out there in the job market. They are also interested in community affairs and what is going on in all levels of government that affect women. On the flip side they want to hear advice on how to stay healthy by eating right, TV savings, exercising and learning stress reducing techniques. They don’t stop there. They also want to know how they can work on their marriage by being more romantic and looking more attractive for their husbands. Women want it all. Women want to learn and hear about what concerns women from other women. It is like listening to a girlfriend talking to them. Women are so busy playing all their roles to other people in their lives that they need to listen to radio programs while they are doing other things. They don’t want anything that is too long. They also like repetition. If they don’t catch it the first time they will next time.

Famous Females in Radio

For several decades, women have been making waves – radio waves, that is. You’ve probably seen biographies of these ladies on Biography Channel or Discovery Channel with DirectStarTV.com. Below is a selection of some of the most famous females ever to work behind a microphone.

In the 1930′s and 1940′s, radio was a source of episodic comedy, similar to the TV sitcoms that would follow. Gracie Allen teamed up with husband George Burns on one such show, and Mary Livingston was a supporting player on her husband Jack Benny’s program. Actress Eve Arden, however, played the lead on her own show. Arden, whose birth name was Eunice Quedens, played a wisecracking educator on the CBS show “Our Miss Brooks,” starting in 1948. “Our Miss Brooks” later moved to television. Arden would later earn two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; one of them was for radio.

Female disc jockeys have entertained generations of listeners. And today, one of the biggest audiences in radio belongs to Delilah Rene, better known by just her first name. Delilah worked in local radio stations in Reedsport, Oregon (her hometown), Seattle and Boston, among other places, before she began reaching millions of people nationwide. Her home base is her actual home in Seattle, where she runs a studio. Her program airs five hours nightly, is a huge hit among women, and features easy-listening favorites as well as Delilah’s gentle advice to the lovelorn.

Female political talk show hosts have become major hits in recent years. Speaking for the progressive outlook is Stephanie Miller. Miller, who has worked as an actress and a stand-up comedian, hosts her radio program out of Los Angeles. Her liberal views are ironic in that William Miller, her father, was a Republican Congressman, leader of the Republican National Committee, and running mate to ultra-conservative Barry Goldwater in 1964. “The Stephanie Miller Show” has aired, on a variety of stations, weekday mornings since September 2004.

Representing the right side of the political aisle is Laura Ingraham. Ingraham, a lawyer and author who once worked as a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, has hosted “The Laura Ingraham Show” since 2001. She is a fierce yet funny defender of conservative viewpoints, with a large and loyal audience.
