Shoes (not diamonds) are a girl’s best friend. They make a girl feel great during important occasions like birthday, formal parties, anniversaries, etc. Shopping for shoes also make a girl feel much better especially after life-changing events like break-ups or separations. I myself love shoes. Heeled sandals make me feel more confident during presentations, interviews, and special occasions. MINT Museum: Outerspace and Characters

MINT Museum (Moment of Imagination and Nostalgia with Toys) is literally a museum of toys. It was built by George Yeo and wife Jennifer Yeo. George is Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2011.

There are five levels in the MINT Museum and the best way to start is to go all the way to the fifth floor. The fifth floor is filled with outer-space toys like robots, rocketships, etc. The fourth floor, meanwhile, houses the different toy characters.

Because I took a lot of photos in the MINT Museum, I decided to write two blog posts to give justice to what I saw and, of course, so I can use more photos.

I never knew that there's such a thing as authorized coloring book but here it is, an authorized Astroboy coloring book.

Food Finds in Singapore

Singapore is a melting pot and you can find so many treasures in this small country. It's also a great place if you're a food enthusiast because so many cuisines and snacks are available. Here are just some of our food finds:

We chanced upon Garrett while walking in Suntec City Mall. The branch is just beside a big Hershey's store (more of that in another post) and saw quite a long line of people waiting their turn. We wondered why because popcorn is just popcorn.

A few meters away from Garrett, we saw a poster announcing that Garrett is now in Suntec City Mall and the brand is Oprah's favorite popcorn. It has become such a favorite that Oprah gave plenty of popcorn in one of her Oprah's Favorite Things episode.

Intrigued, we went back and bought a mixed bag of cheddar and caramel for about SG$8.00 (or roughly PhP270). Our verdict? It's a great popcorn! Okay, so we weren't able to finish everyone in 60 seconds (which is what's printed on the paper bag) but it is a great-tasting popcorn. At first, we didn't like the cheddar but we later realized that this neutralizes the caramel.

I don't think Garrett is available in the Philippines but when it finally reaches Philippine shores, make sure you grab a bag.

I found Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate Pearls in 7-11 near La Peranakan Hotel, which we booked via http://www.roomorama.com/. It costs about SG$3.20 (roughly PhP108) and contains at least 30 choco pearls. The tin can is a nice touch, too.

My husband and I loove kaya toast. Whenever we fly out of the country, our breakfast would always be in Kopi Roti at the airport. Kaya Toast consists of buttered bread with kaya spread, complemented with two soft-boiled eggs and coffee.

I found that Ya Kun Kaya offers kaya spread in their stores. Ya Kun Kaya is one, if not the oldest restaurants in Singapore that carries kaya toast. A bottle costs about SG$6 or PhP220.

I've always wanted to try Ben and Jerry's, a popular ice cream brand in the US. The company that manufactures the ice cream brand is a classic example of an innovator. Its history is filled with different ice cream flavors like Cherry Garcia, Boston Cream Pie, Country Peach Cobbler, and more. When I saw Ben and Jerry's in 7-11, Chocolate Fudge Brownie was the only flavor available. Oh, well.

Thanks to my friend K who told me that Ferrero Rocher has dark chocolates, I made sure to hunt for the brand in Singapore. The bad news is that Ferrero Rocher doesn't offer a whole box of dark chocolate, only an assortex box of the regular chocolate, pistachio, and dark. I found this in a Duty Free store inside the Budget Terminal for SG$22.10 (PhP730.00)

Banana Peel Launches Maja Salvador, John Lloyd Cruz Collections

When people think of flip-flops, they think of expensive foreign brands. But who knew that there’s a Filipino brand that is at par with foreign brands but at a much reasonable price?

Women’s Central was invited to a small gathering of media people, bloggers and business partners for the launch of the Maja Salvador and John Lloyd Cruz Collections. Maja has been a Banana Peel endorser for years but this is the first time that John Lloyd endorses the product.

Unfortunately, we lost all the photos we took of the events so we resorted to grabbing the photos from the Banana Peel Facebook page.

Going back to our coverage, the two young celebrities collaborated with the artists of Banana Peel to come up with their signature collection. The Maja Salvador Collection features black, white and red colors with dots, stripes and floral patterns. The JLC Collection, meanwhile, features a variety of colors and the overall look is classic with hints of rock vibe.

The Maja Salvador Collection is available for sizes 5-9 and costs PhP240 and up. The JLC Collection is available for men with sizes 5-14 and costs PhP380 and up.

My Nuffnang Story

Long before I came to be a digital palengkera, Women’s Central has been enrolled in Nuffnang’s advertising program. Admittedly, this blog has yet to earn enough to make its first cash-out but I don’t mind.

Why not? Because I see Nuffnang as a great study case of what works online. As a digital marketer, I’m fascinated with Nuffnang’s business model and how it transformed the blogging community. Nuffnang has set the standards of how to build, maintain, and sustain a strong relationship with bloggers.

So why do I find Nuffnang special despite the fact that I’ve never earned anything, never won anything big (except for a consolation prize for the Eveready campaign) and never invited to any exclusive Nuffnang event?

1. It’s a great community.
I’ve met many of Nuffnang bloggers and they all have kind words for Nuffnang. I see how passionate Nuffnang people are, judging by their tweets or Facebook posts. I know they hold events that engage and build rapport within the community. Nuffnang is not just a business venture. It’s a real, honest-to-goodness community.

2. Trust is key.
The online world can be a dangerous space. You don’t know who you are talking to, who are stabbing you behind your back, and who are really sincere with what they do. The presence of Nuffnang in the blogging world gives bloggers a safe zone. They know that Nuffnang is a legitimate business with legitimate clients. Bloggers trust that they are dealing with a company with solid reputation. Even the people behind Nuffnang are accessible. Just check their Twitter accounts.

3. It’s a good case study.
Like I said, I’m fascinated with how Nuffnang has transformed the blogging community. It helped solidify that reputation of bloggers that they are a force to reckon with, that their voices are just as strong (if not stronger) as other media.

The online world is still evolving and I know Nuffnang has more to offer and I bet the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards is just one of them. Come Dec. 16, 2011, 500 bloggers from around the Asia-Pacific region will flock to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards 2011 in Putrajaya Marriott. La Peranakan Hotel in Singapore

We’ve always stayed in a particular hotel whenever we go to Singapore. This time, however, we chose to go out of our comfort zone and choose another hotel. Using Roomorama, we chose La Peranakan Hotel.
When we arrived in Singapore, we proceeded to the taxi stand. We encountered a slight difficulty because the drivers don’t know where in East Coast Road La Peranakan Hotel is. Apparently, East Coast Road is a looong road and the drivers needed a more specific landmark.

I called up the hotel and ask for directions. If you're staying in La Peranakan Hotel, keep this in mind. It is near Marine Bay Parade and Telok Kurau.

We arrived in La Peranakan by 10:30 AM and were greeted warmly by a staff. Check-in is at 2 PM although an early check-in would cost us a SG$30. We didn’t want to check in early, anyway, so we chose to look for the nearest mall to have breakfast. The staff told us to come back at 1 PM and she also gave us a map and directions for the nearest mall.

Parkway Parade is about a 10-minute walk so we decided to hike it. We had breakfast in McDonald’s and checked out the stores. The Dark Lord was able to purchase several Battletech books at San Bookshop.

We returned to La Peranakan Hotel at 1 PM. The staff gave our key so we can finally settle ourselves.

Our room was the standard type with a queen-sized bed. The room size is about 20 sqm with a private toilet and bath, a night table, a mounted TV, and a dresser. I also found a kettle and several hangers for our clothes in the dresser.

The room may be a little small but it can comfortably fit two people. Friends who are staying here can also choose to have twin beds.

The hotel also provides bath towels and a dispensing wash cream is available. The toilet and bath also come with hot and cold water, which is a definite plus.

Our room has nice window, which gives you a nice view of the street. If you don’t want to sunlight to come in, you can always close the curtains.

La Peranakan Hotel is a charming hotel. Even with only two floors, the hotel looks cozy. There are nice paintings and frames mounted on the walls. Even the dresser door has a nice accent.

Food enthusiasts would get a kick staying here because East Coast Road has a lot of restaurants. Mexican, Thai and Italian restaurants are located just outside the hotel entrance. If you walk along East Coast Road, you’ll find more restaurants to choose from.

La Peranakan Hotel is located in a nice neighborhood. We noticed that there are a lot of nice apartments and bungalows in the area. We surmise that this is where the middle-class lives, judging by the houses there.

Although the nearest MRT station is six blocks away, there is a bus stop just a few steps away. Take Bus 15 and it will bring you to the nearest MRT station (Eunos Station). But if you understand how the bus system works, then you can always take the bus to bring you to other places in Singapore like Orchard, Suntec City, etc.

The choice of the hotel significantly contributed to our grand time in Singapore. My sincerest thanks to Roomorama for the easy access to different kinds of accommodations.

A Moving Experience at the Singapore Flyer Sling Flight

Barely a week before the Dark Lord and I were scheduled to fly to Singapore for our annual vacation, PinayJade announced that the winner of her blog giveaway is me and the prize is a pair of tickets to the Singapore Flyer Sling Flight.

Knowing that I win these tickets was a happy surprise because 1) I’ve never tried the Singapore Flyer (even after visiting Singapore at least five times) and 2) this is one of the rare times that I win anything from a blog contest. After a few emails back and forth, everything was good to go.

Our Singapore Flyer schedule was Nov. 9 at 2:30 PM. In the morning, the Dark Lord and I went to Plaza Singapura to hunt for his toys. We arrived in Singapore Flyer before 2 PM and were directed to the Information Desk. After a few calls here and there, one of the staff took us to the capsule.

Singapore Flyer stands 165 meters above the city. This giant observation wheel is the largest in the world. It provides an unobstructed view of Singapore at all directions.

The Singapore Sling Flight—those tickets we won—costs SG$69.00 each (roughly PhP2,330). Singapore Sling is a world-renowned cocktail drink. Naturally, our prize included two glasses of the Singapore Sling, which we enjoyed while inside the capsule. Normally, the Singapore Sling Flight includes a cocktail glass souvenir although the lady at the information desk said we won’t be getting this. Awwww….

Still, the best part of this prize is that we had the capsule to ourselves. W e didn’t have to share the space with any other guests. Cool, huh?

I have a slight altophobia and so I remained seated most of the time. But this did not stop me from enjoying the view. In fact, the experience was so great that we decided to forego Marina Bay Sands. We planned to go there earlier for its observation deck SkyPark but because Marina Bay Sands and Singapore Flyer are within the vicinity, we decided that Marina Bay Sands is most likely to have the same view as Singapore Flyer.

The regular Singapore Flight costs about SG$29.50 per adult (or PhP1000). There are other packages depending on your preference like Moet & Chandon Champagne Flight (SG$69.00), Signature Cocktail Flight (SG$69.00), and Sky Dining Flight (SG$269.00).

The Dark Lord had a great time inside the capsule. We took a lot of photos of the view and just acted silly. Check out some of our photos:

Learn about the cute and playful Koala with five interesting attributes that describe just what kind of creature it is!

K-Kind
Though it may seem a bit odd to some, describing an animal, especially a Koala, with a human attribute such as kindness is totally justified. Koalas are kind animals simply because they are herbivores. Big word, right? Being herbivores mean Koalas eat nothing but plants or leaves—Eucalyptus leaves to be precise. This means Koalas don't harm other animals or hurt them in any way for food. They are calm and harmless and their only weapon against aggressors is to growl. Though sometimes fierce in their own way when their safety is threatened, Koalas never hurt humans or fellow animals and pretty much keep to themselves (they prefer to live alone!) in their natural habitat.

O-Offbeat
The Koala is like no other animal in the animal kingdom. Though its slow movements are similar to the Sloth's, there is no other animal that resembles the Koala! Koalas have pear-shaped bodies that help them maintain their balance while perching on tree limbs. Despite their plump bodies, they are excellent climbers so they can climb smooth tree trunks easily and quickly, and are also good swimmers who cross rivers to get away from floods and predators. What is even more offbeat about the Koala is that despite its climbing and swimming prowess, they move quite awkwardly on the ground.

A-Aromatic
To be aromatic means to have “a strong distinctive fragrance” and our little furry friends are extremely aromatic! No, they don't smell unpleasant. In fact, they have a very comforting smell which is the aroma of the Eucalyptus leaves they eat all day so they smell a bit on the “minty” side.

L-Languid

A word that may not be common to one's vocabulary, “languid” is to be “lacking in vigor and vitality.” Koalas are so languid that some people think they're lazy because they sleep so much or because they seem to move in slow motion. They certainly don’t ever seem to be in a hurry. But, there is a very good reason for such behavior: Eucalyptus leaves are low in nutrients. Even though Koalas eat a lot of them, the leaves don’t provide them with much energy. So koalas conserve their energy by moving slowly and getting plenty of sleep. Lucky Koala!

A-Amazing
One attribute that makes this animal so amazing is its thick gray fur, which is so thick that it’s almost waterproof. Their fur changes to adapt to the different temperatures in their environment. Their woolly waterproof coats keep them warm in cold weather and dry when it rains or when seasons change and the weather warms up, they shed some of their fur to stay cool. It’s like the Koala has its own multi-purpose clothing collection, ready for any type of weather!

Given these characteristics of Koalas, it is no wonder that many people get hooked on another interesting Koala—Koala’s March biscuit snacks, that is.
