Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to do the new clashtastic look. It’s not a case of simply grabbing as many conflicting colours and patterns as possible and then wearing them all at the same time, oh no. It’s all about editing and continuity in your outfits, and the best way to do this is to choose a unifying feature in all of the pieces you select. Let’s say for example you’ve got to pick shoes, a dress, a cardigan and a scarf/bag. Pick whatever you want to be the main feature–perhaps you’ve got a bright-red pair of converse you want to showcase, or a crazy-patterned dress you’re dying to give centre-stage. Running with the ‘feature piece’, pick items that have at least one element in common with it. Maybe the patterns is completely clashing but they share an identical shade of green, or perhaps the colours are all off but the pattern is stylistically similar. We want to avoid matchy-match, but we also want to make it clear that it’s statement dressing, not accidental mayhem.

Any outfit, no matter how outlandish, will work if you inject a dose of your personality into it. Choose pieces that reflect who you are as a person–if you’re not really a ‘clashing’ type of girl then you don;t have to force it–start small!
