Women’s Rights and Women’s Empowerment

By Lakshmi Puri

In Bangladesh and Cambodia, the shocking loss of life by garment factory workers, many of them women, sparked global debate on how to secure safe and decent jobs in our globalised economy. In Europe, the disproportionate impact on women of austerity cuts, and the use of quotas to get more women on corporate boards continue to make headlines.

Even though women have made real gains, we are constantly reminded how far we have to go to realise equality between men and women.

World leaders recognised the pervasiveness of discrimination and violence against women and girls when they signed onto the visionary Millennium Declaration in 2000. Amongst the eight Millennium Development Goals, they included a goal to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

With these goals set to expire in 2015, we are now in a race to achieve them. We are also in the midst a global conversation about what should replace them. It’s time for women to move from the sidelines to the centre.

In a new post-2015 development agenda, we must build on the achievements of the MDGs while avoiding their shortcomings. Everyone agrees that the goals have galvanized progress to reduce poverty and discrimination, and promote education, gender equality, health and safe drinking water and sanitation. more>>

The Jewish Connection to Israel: Sephardic Aliyot

The anti-Israel community often attempts delegitimize the State of Israel by using the rhetorical argument that the Jewish people left Israel following the Bar Kokhba Revolt, were absent from the area for 2000 years, and didn’t return to their ancestral homeland until the rise of the Zionist movement. The reality is that the Jewish people were never absent from the Land of Israel, for Jews continued to live in as well as settle the Land of Israel despite all of the hardships associated with it since ancient times.

For example, 34 synagogues were found in the Golan Heights dating from the late Roman era up until the Arab conquest. There was also a strong Jewish community present in Ein Gedi that continued to flourish up through the sixth century until Byzantine persecutions brought that community to an end. Additionally, a Jewish community found in Baram existed up through the Crusader period and population estimates from the seventh century as well as from 1517 following the Crusades and Black Plague also indicate a Jewish presence in the land of Israel.

76 Arab women were murdered in the last decade. The Committee for struggle women murder in Arab society initiated an event in order to Protest the murder and violence against Arab women. Families of the victims demand justice since most of the murderers are still free due to Incompetence of the Israeli police.

Us and Them: Breeding racism in the Jewish Establishment

Demonstrations in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah have come alive again as of this past Friday, aiming to show solidarity with the Shamasneh family who have appealed the impending eviction from their home. Unbeknownst to many, the struggle in Sheikh Jarrah reaches far beyond the borders of Jerusalem. In fact, it affects ethnic tensions half a world away by influencing how American Jewish youth internalize the separation between “us” and “them.”

“I was just having a really hard time,” one Jewish student at UC Berkeley told me, speaking of her experience at a Sheikh Jarrah protest she was invited to attend while traveling through Israel. “It was the first time I’d ever talked to a real Palestinian,” she explained, “… [he] doesn’t want to kill me, he tells me he likes some Israelis, it was just crazy.” She would later explain to me that upon reflection, she was “raised, not explicitly but at least very implicitly, with racism towards Arabs, and Palestinians in particular.” I asked whether she meant that she had never explicitly said the words: “I hate Arabs.” “Frankly,” she admitted to my surprise, “I probably did say that.” The Palestinian man she encountered at Sheikh Jarrah was evidently not at all whom she was expecting, but the question remains – how did she imagine her first encounter with a Palestinian and where did this conception come from? continued>>

A lively argument is heard coming from inside; Adel Sakr against his three daughters. The daughters make a good case and eventually the father gives in. Sakr may be a legendary luthier in the city’s music scene but he is a family man first and foremost. “You can never win with them,” he says smiling.

Perhaps not, but according to Sakr, with a good work ethic you can win other battles. Sakr’s musical vocation began when he was a child: “these things are always noticeable. I was just drawn to it.” Sakr’s inclination toward music was so strong that he created an improvised instrument by pulling strings from different fishing rods over wood. “I had no idea what the different notes were but I experimented with different lengths and thicknesses to produce different sounds.”

Sakr tells how music requires sacrifices. “Many think of a bohemian life when a musician comes to mind but nothing could be further away from the truth. You were either studying music theory during the day or you were out performing and practicing at other times,” he said. more>>

*Searching the Mizrahi Soul*

By: Oudeh Basharat

*There are a number of ways to understand this provocative article:*

*It is most definitely true that Arab Jews in **Israel** are at the
forefront of nationalist racism and chauvinism. For many years we have
chosen to see this repugnant fact as a product of the racism that Israeli
Mizrahim have experienced. We must start to wonder at what point this
excuse loses its meaning given that Mizrahim have made a complete
transition as proud Israelis to anti-Arab hatred and show few actual signs
of acknowledging that this racism is a form of Sephardic self-hatred. The
dissolution of our Arab Jewish culture is now nearly complete and it is not
likely to magically return. *

* *

*But we can also see the article as disingenuous. Once Mizrahi leadership
like SHAS is put into question, we must ask ourselves whether or not the
Palestinian Arab leadership is also riddled with racism and religious
fanaticism.*

* *

*It is always a dangerous thing to set up any form of moral equivalence.
In this case it is important to note that both the Arab Muslims and the
Arab Jews have chosen to ignore their common history in the region and
adopt a strictly Zionist viewpoint where each side is the primordial enemy
of the other.*

* *

*While the article makes a brief – very brief – allusion to the "glorious
history" of Jews in the Arab world, this is not the primary focus of the
discussion. The demands being made of SHAS – all of which I agree with in
principle – are ones that HAMAS itself would fail: Gay rights, freedom to
dissent, adherence to democratic norms, equality of all citizens under the
rule of Law, etc. It is but a pipe dream in a region where no one lives
freely.*

* *

*Zionism was responsible for ushering in a new era of racism and
intolerance in the **Middle East**. It is not that Arab nationalism was
free of the taint of anti-democratic sentiment and prejudice, but it was
the emergence of the Jewish state which required religious separation and
made it a normal part of life in the region after centuries of co-existence
under Islamic rule.*

* *

*Arab governments have matched this religious apartheid and over time have
forgotten that Jews once lived in their countries. The less said about the
pitiful state of Christians in today's Muslim world the better. There are
no heroes here, no one to point to who could show us the way to provide
democracy and equal rights. The model simply does not exist in the region
at all.*

* *

*I am in sympathy with Mr. Basharat when he pleads with the Mizrahim for
equity and justice. It is not proper for those who have tasted the bitter
fruit of Ashkenazi oppression to then dole out that oppression to others in
return. But it is also quite true that older Mizrahim would rightly claim
that the oppression of the Palestinians led to persecution of native Arab
Jews in the Muslim **Middle East**. We must dole out responsibility and
culpability in an equal manner.*

* *

*But in the end we must find a way to break the crippling certainties of
the discourse on both sides. The only way to do this is to restore our
knowledge of the culture and history of the region from Umayyad
**Spain**in the West to the Abbasid caliphate in the East.
Inhabitants of the
**Middle East** – whether in **Israel** or the Muslim Arab states – know
almost nothing about the other religious communities other than the
divisive hatred that is spewed on a regular basis in the media and official
institutional discourse.*

* *

*Discussions such as this one should point to the problems we are facing,
but must equally raise the issue of our common cultural heritage and the
fruitful interaction of Jews and Muslims over the course of many centuries.*

* *

*An article like the one written in 1967 by Trude Weiss-Rosmarin would be
of great help in allowing us to better understand our current situation and
enable us to achieve a moral humane way of social living: *

* *

https://groups.google.com/group/Davidshasha/msg/64747cd23ec88353

* *

*This history is not – as the article states in its final line – predicated
on "universal humanism" but on the synthesis common to the monotheistic
faiths of the **Middle East** known as Religious Humanism. The concepts we
use and how we identify them linguistically are central to any attempt to
bring the warring sides back together. It is in this way that we can
ultimately repudiate the shared racism of Zionism and Arab nationalism.*

* *

*DS *

The press has reported that the leadership of Shas chased after Labor
chairwoman Shelly Yacimovich in a desperate attempt to create an
alternative coalition to the one being formed with the parties of Naftali
Bennett and Yair Lapid.

In their desperation to sit in the coalition, Shas leaders said they would
even vote to dismantle illegal outposts.

Only a few weeks of being hung out to dry were needed for Shas to begin
courting those who "have forgotten what it is to be Jewish," as Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu famously whispered about a decade and a half
ago to the kabbalist Rabbi Yitzhak Kaddouri, who has since died.

If the drought continues, Shas could start eyeing Meretz leader Zahava
Gal-On, and we might even get to see the slogan "Enough of the Occupation"
worn on the lapels of Shas MKs. So congratulations - a new party has joined
the left and Shas is its name. Mabruk!

This type of behavior is not unique to our Jewish brethren. After all,
these are the ways of so-called religious movements, which are as distant
from true belief as heaven is from earth. Egyptian President Mohammed
Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who has not held back his
criticism of the Jews, to the extent that his comments embarrass the
screens that convey them, had only just taken office when he immediately
sent President Shimon Peres a heartwarming love letter.

Back in Israel, this is the time for soul-searching. Not on the part of the
leadership of Shas, but on the part of its 286,300 voters, who brought to
power a Mizrahi leader who became the point man in the horrifying operation
to expel refugees, even though the UN refugee agency had determined that
returning them to their homeland was a crime. A victim who throws away the
life of another victim - and all in the name of the Torah.

Search your souls, brothers! How has a movement of victims of
discrimination turned into a symbol of darkness? The party of Mizrahim
tells us that gay people are "sick" and says Israel must bomb thousands of
houses in Gaza; these Jews of Middle Eastern and North African origin have
surpassed the "white" Jews of European ancestry in discriminating against
Israel's Arab population.

Search your souls, brothers! How has the Housing and Construction Ministry
become a subcontractor of the settlements, the biggest theft enterprise of
our time, under Shas leadership? Instead of proposing housing solutions for
distressed families, Shas is building separate housing for ultra-Orthodox
Jews of non-Ashkenazi descent. This is how the Mizrahim have become the
spearhead for the force keeping their Arab brothers down.

The Haifa-area town of Harish was built with the goal of blocking Arab
development in Wadi Ara, historian Gadi Algazi has said. In Upper Nazareth,
Shas uses Mayor Shimon Gabso to fight what he considers to be the excessive
presence of Arabs. The masters above will once again enjoy the battle among
the weaker groups at the bottom of the ladder.

The hundreds of thousands of enlightened Mizrahim must also do their own
soul-searching.

How has the leadership of Shas managed to "revive its past glory," as it
puts it, when the party has faithfully served a distorted social agenda and
piggish capitalism, while at the same time its voters live on welfare
allowances?

With all its glorious history among the Arab peoples, Israel's Eastern
Jewry does not deserve leaders who crawl through the corridors of power in
an attempt to gather a few crumbs from the masters' tables, even as they
serve as a whip against the country's other socioeconomically weak
populations.

Israel's Eastern Jewry deserves an enlightened leadership enhanced with
universal humanistic values.

*From Haaretz, March 11, 2013*

 3/10

hein, des putes, t'as compris !

- Oh !

Tu peux me passer maman?

Long silence.. …………Puis papa dit :

- La piscine? Quelle piscine ? Je suis bien au 05.28.82.96.00 ? ? ? ? ?

For the past few days, Hamdeen Sabahi, former presidential candidate and founder of the Egyptian Popular Current, has been the target of severe criticism — not for his politics, but for his daughter Salma's alleged misconduct.

Salma Sabahi turned herself in to authorities on May 22, after a prosecutor charged her with fraud and issued a warrant for her arrest. More than 20 plaintiffs accused her of soliciting at least $23,000, promising them quick and easy profits through investment in an online company called Global Ad Mart, which supposedly pays hundreds of dollars to people who agree to watch five advertisement videos every week.

The political stalemate in Palestine and Israel over the two-state solution has finally provoked Palestinians from the occupied territories to declare a strategic change in direction of the one-state solution.

Palestinian activists from different political persuasions and careers paths have made a declaration for a democratic state for all its citizens on the 65th anniversary of the Nakba. One of the founders of the new Popular Movement for One Democratic State, a veteran leader of Fatah, said that it is much different than the PLO’s call for a secular democratic state which Israel has often attacked as an attempt to negate the existence of Israel and the Jewish people.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Monitor, Radi Jarai said that this democratic movement has absolutely no limitations on its citizens between Jews and Palestinians. “We will respect the Israel law of return 1951 and will also defend the Palestinians’ right of return.” Jarai, who spent years in an Israel prison, said that the democratic state that he and his friends are calling for can be “a refuge for Jews and Palestinians.”

This week, Jill Salzman (pictured) shares the inspiring story behind her grassroots organization. On April 26, 1654, the last Jewish residents of the Brazilian town of Recife departed the Portuguese colony after being given an order of expulsion.

When the Inquisition was initially implemented in Portugal in 1497, all Jews were forced to undergo baptism, and were forbidden from emigrating. Many continued to practice their Judaism clandestinely, and when they were able to leave, one favored destination was Brazil. There, they made up a good percentage of the 50,000 Europeans who had settled there by 1624, working in commerce and other professions (even as priests), and setting up sugar plantations and mills.

During the 17th century, the combined Spanish-Portuguese monarchy was involved in an ongoing conflict – the Eighty Years War -- with the Netherlands. The war extended to the New World, where the forces of the Dutch East and West India Companies battled with the Portuguese and for a period took possession of Portuguese colonial outposts. By 1630, the Portuguese colony in Recife, Pernambuco, on the Atlantic coast, was among the parts of northeastern Brazil conquered by Dutch forces.

Under the brief period of Dutch rule, converso Jews were permitted to openly practice their faith. During this time, Jews were involved in building infrastructure (roads, bridges, sewerage system) in the colony, in slave trade, and also in the profitable sugar production industry. By 1645, according to Dutch historian Franz Leonard Schalkwijk, there were 1,630 Jews living in Recife, a number equal to the Jewish population of Amsterdam at the time.

The prominence and economic success of Brazil's Jews stirred up resentment among the colony's Christians, who participated in the ongoing Portuguese campaign to push out the Dutch. That campaign went from 1645 until January 26, 1654, the date the Dutch capitulated to Portuguese liberation forces.

In the interim, probably in 1636, the Jews had established a synagogue – Kahal Zur Yisrael – in Recife, the first in the New World. The Jewish community supported a primary Talmud Torah school and a more advanced Gemara school, and a charitable fund.

A book of records that survived provides evidence of all of the services provided by the community, and outlines the customs and regulations by which it functioned. For example, the synagogue had assigned seats, which no one was permitted to change, and on Shabbat Nahamu, the first Sabbath after Tisha Be'Av, funds were collected for the Jewish community in the Land of Israel. This "minute book" lists signatures of 171 members, providing a valuable source of the names of some of the Jewish residents of Brazil. Many of the families involved in the founding of the Shearith Israel Sephardi synagogue in New York could trace their roots back to Recife by way of the minute book.

The transition back to Portuguese rule in 1654 was orderly, and gave Dutch and Jewish residents three months to liquidate their assets (they were permitted to take property with them) and leave. Most Jews went to Amsterdam, some settled on other islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Curacao, and another 23 famously made it to New Amsterdam, later known as New York. Those New Christians who dared to remain in Brazil found themselves pursued by the Inquisition and were sometimes shipped back to Portugal for trial before the Inquisition there.

The two-story building that housed the Kahal Zur synagogue, in the Street of the Jews, was torn down early in the 20th century. Later, it was reconstructed and reopened as a museum of Jewish history in Brazil in 2001.

*Zionism: Of the Jews, or For the Jews?*

By: Seth J. Frantzman

In February of last year, the president of the Shalom Hartman Institute,
Rabbi Donniel Hartman, wrote, "In truth, we have no desire to share our
country with them [the Haredim] and prefer that their integration be
limited, all the while hoping for their religious assimilation." In
February of 2013 the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute published a
paper called "the Haredi challenge" which proposed several solutions,
including "integration of the Haredim by coercion."

March 7 saw the publication of Yuval Elizur and Lawrence Malkin's The War
Within: Israel's Ultra-Orthodox Threat to Democracy and the Nation.

The way Israeli society and its constituent Zionist supporters abroad talk
about the Haredi problem is reminiscent of the way Americans once spoke of
Manifest Destiny, or Europeans of the "White Man's Burden." This debate
about how best to win the "war" against this minority, which must be
"assimilated" and "integrated," goes to the heart of the definition of
Zionism itself. Is Zionism for the Jews, or of the Jews? If it is for the
Jews it is coercive and exclusive, if it is of the Jews then it is
inclusive, whether those Jews speak Arabic, Ladino or Yiddish.

To understand the roots of the current "war" elite society is encouraging
people to wage against the Haredim one has to look at the roots of Zionism.
In 1898 Max Nordau spoke at the Second Zionist Congress of the need for
Jews to embrace physical labor and strength: "Let us once more become
deepchested, sturdy, sharp-eyed men...For no other people will gymnastics
fulfill a more educational purpose than for us Jews. It shall straighten us
in body and in character...Our new, muscle Jews have not yet regained the
heroism of our forefathers who in large numbers eagerly entered the sports
arenas in order to take part in competition."

This call to his fellow Jews was not coercive, but rather based on
consensus building and the logic found in his language. However, the
Zionist call for the "Conquest of Labor" in Ottoman Palestine quickly
became coercive.

Haim Arlosoroff noted in 1927: "There is almost no example of an effort by
a people engaged in settlement (am mityashev) with a European standard of
needs to transform a country with a low wage level that is made even lower
by the immigration of cheap labor into a site for mass immigration and mass
settlement without using coercive means."

In only a quarter of a century part of the Zionist movement progressed from
seeking consensus to forcing a "coercive" paradigm on people. Most of this
was due to the shock of having to live in the Land of Israel. The Zionist
leaders from Europe sought to import a "European standard" into the
country. The models they found in the country, such as Rothschild's
plantation settlements, were unacceptable and had to be brushed aside.

This had catastrophic affects on the existing Jewish structures in the land.

Much of Palestine's economy at that time was dominated by important
Sephardic families, such as the Amzalaks, Abulafias, Navons, Bechars,
Valeros and others. Sephardic Jewish workers, such as the Yemenites who had
settled at Ben Shemen, were not welcome on the new "European" kibbutzim
that were established.

Strict "acceptance committees" were set up by the European Jewish
immigrants to weed out the wrong "human material." This was the beginning
of the imposition of Zionism for the Jews, and the abandonment of Zionism
of the Jews.

It is interesting that it is in this period that we see a vociferous
rejection of Zionism by Orthodox and Reform Jews. The Orthodox understood
that this new European model was not inclusive. Today the pundits speak of
the Orthodox not "assimilating into Israel," when in fact it was the
Zionist European immigrants who themselves never sought to integrate or
assimilate into the economy of Ottoman or British Palestine. An Orthodox or
Sephardic family resident in Palestine for 13 generations is today ordered
to "integrate" by those whose time in the Land of Israel might not stretch
back more than a decade.

A more tragic episode followed Israel's War of Independence. Despite the
government's desire to ingather the exiles, a deep-seated racism existed
against Jewish immigrants who came from Muslim countries. Vienneseborn
Labor Zionist elitist Amos Elon was sent by Haaretz to visit potential
Jewish immigrants in 1953, but "portrayed the mellah [Jewish quarter] of
Casablanca as a place of stench, degeneracy, disease and perversity."

According to scholar Orit Rozen, he worried about what effect "uncontrolled
fertility would have on the Jewish people's genetic robustness," and
another Israeli claimed the immigrants "could spread disease from transit
camps to kibbutzim."

Other European-born Zionists who had only become "Israelis" several years
prior claimed that the new immigrants were like a "foreign country."
Ironically, these Jewish immigrants spoke Arabic, which was the language of
the Middle East, rather than the German and Yiddish those like Elon spoke,
and yet they were the "foreigners" with "degenerate genetic material."

When the Yemenite Jews arrived author Anita Shapira relates how "the
teachers did not hesitate to tell students to cut off their [traditional]
sidelocks, throw away their hats and turn their backs on religious
tradition."

Where the Sephardic Chelouche family had once welcomed European moshavniks
into their home in Jaffa, now the Sephardim were subjected to the full
weight of a racist bureaucracy intended to destroy their culture.

Yemenite girls who wore long dresses were ordered to undress and wear
shorts – everything "native" had to go.

Sassoon Somekh, a Baghdadi Jew from an intellectual family who became a
scholar in Israel recalls arriving in Israel and being ordered by a
Yiddish-speaking Jewish Agency official into a barbed wire encircled
transit camp. He remembers it "created a feeling, for the first time among
many of the Iraqis, that they were second-class citizens."

Indeed, they were second class citizens.

They could never be admitted into kibbutzim by the "acceptance committees"
that Labor Zionism had set up. Their fate was to be sent to "development
towns" to work as cheap labor in the place of the Arabs who had fled the
country during the war.

There were many in the General Zionist and Herut parties who objected to
this mistreatment.

Revisionist Zionists had incorporated Sephardic Jews into the ranks. When
Menachem Begin – who the Labor Zionists called a "fascist" – toured the
transit camps, he brought along an Arabic-speaking Jew to translate. Who
were the real fascists, those like Elon who worried about "genetic
robustness," or those like Begin who sought to meet the Jewish immigrants
who he believed deserved an equal place in the state? While the kibbutzniks
were sealing the Mizrahim in transit camps and development towns another
group of zealots set out to defeat the Orthodox. Yitzhak Laor recalls, "in
the 1960s, when the ultra-Orthodox of Mea She'arim closed off its streets
on the Sabbath, kibbutzniks came to Jerusalem wielding sticks to fight 'the
sons of darkness.'" Thus, even though almost 10 percent of the country's
land had been distributed to the kibbutzim – that put up fences to keep the
rest of Israel's citizens off their property – the kibbutzniks still felt
they had to colonize through violence the remaining congested urban areas
where Haredim lived.

Not all Jewish immigrants were wanted by the elites, who believed that
Zionism was for the Jews, and not of the Jews. Although Yitzhak Ben-Zvi,
the second president of Israel, had written about the Ethiopian Jews, and
even though Ethiopian Jewish leaders had sought to provide shelter for
European Jews fleeing Nazism, the nascent state of Israel rejected
Ethiopian Jews who wanted to make aliyah. In 1959 Ma'ariv journalist Yuval
Elizur wrote that "it is an ostrich-like policy to ignore the skin color...
we must consider that bringing all the 'Falashas' in a short period of time
will create a racial problem in Israel."

Of course, bringing as many light-skinned European Jews to a Middle Eastern
country would not create a "racial problem." It was the Africans that had
to be kept out; they were not right for Israel. Is it a surprise that Mr.
Elizur is also the co-author of The War Within? There are post-Zionists who
have sought to dismantle Zionism. Amos Elon, the same journalist who
worried in 1953 that the Sephardim would bring "bad genetics" to pollute
Israel, became a post-Zionist in 2004 and moved to Italy, claiming
Sephardim had ruined "his" country. Ironically, some of the leaders of
post-Zionism were from kibbutzim and many initially preached an exclusivist
Zionism.

But for those who are Zionist, there remains the existential issue of
whether Zionism is for the Jews or of the Jews. When people start claiming
Jews must "assimilate" or "integrate" into Israel, it is important to ask
what that means. When people assert that "Boris is not an Israeli name," we
need to ask who defines what an "Israeli" name is. When they claim that
Israel has a "war within," we have to wonder: what kind of Zionism is it
that fights a "war" with other Jews? When textbooks produced in
Israeldescribe Ethiopian Jews as moving to
Israel "for the money," or, as Anita Shapira claimed, that Sephardim had to
be "compelled to get used to physical work," we need to demand an answer:
what kind of Zionism is it that views non-European Jews in such a bigoted
light? FOR SOME leaders and intellectuals, Zionism was never meant to be a
movement of all the Jews. The "bad genetics" meant the Moroccans had to be
kept out, the "darkness" meant the Orthodox could not be members, and the
lack of knowledge of "physical work" or prevalence of "diseases" meant
Iraqi, Yemenite and Indian Jews were not wanted.

But one cannot "integrate" into a Zionism predicated on the superiority of
one Jew over another.

Even today Israel is haunted by the discrimination of the 1950s; we have
never sufficiently confronted these statements because for many these
exclusivist intellectuals are still heroes of the state. Jews abroad still
buy into the rhetoric of the "war within", so that Zionism can triumph. But
Zionism cannot triumph over the Jews; it is either a movement of the Jews,
or it is a disgrace to its goals.

*From The **Jerusalem** Post, **April 24, 2013***

Dear Maysoon,

I was moved to read your piece commemorating the flight of your husband from a village near Jerusalem in 1948. He has kept the rusty iron key to his home. Yours was one of hundreds of articles in the global media, together with demonstrations and marches, marking your Nakba—the flight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs in 1948.

But let me tell you a little known-fact: as your husband's family was fleeing their village, a greater number of Jewish refugees were streaming out of the Arab world with one suitcase—in the opposite direction.

Over 800,000 Jewish refugees fled in the years immediately following 1948. This is the Jewish Nakba—a forgotten tragedy shrouded in silence. One of those refugee families was mine. We lived in a comfortable house in a riverside Jewish neighbourhood in Baghdad. continued>>

The winding, narrow streets of Old Cairo behind Khan El-Khalili have traditionally been bustling with an array of economic activity. Today, nestled among the ancient houses and mosques of the Fatimid era, many traditional workshops still remain, defying modern trends and contemporary production practices alike.

These little holes-in-the-wall, and the streets where they make their home, are filled with the rattling, clunking music of the work within, accompanied by recitation of the Quran from a nearby radio.

Known as the Khan Abo-Ta’ya or Haret El-Yahoud, (the Jewish Quarter), the area is among Khan El-Khalili’s primary providers of the glittering souvenirs (necklaces, pendants, etc.) which fill its boutiques and draw in tourists.

“We can work with any type of core material, be it gold, silver, copper or anything else,” said Mohamed Zaki, a 64 year old craftsman who has been in his profession for 50 years. “We even used to work with ivory imported from African countries before it was banned many years ago.”

Zaki and his fellow workers provide the bazaars with the little silver or painted parts which are integrated in ornaments and souvenirs. “These tiny objects cannot be manufactured by modern industrial devices; we are their only makers,” he said.

The work is always customised; traders come to Zaki’s workshop and provide him with an image of what they need or give him general guidelines so he can produce the item in question. more>>

The pro-Palestine blogosphere has been abuzz with the deletion of an article on Zionism by Columbia University professor Joseph Massad from the Al-Jazeerawebsite (you can read the Massad article here). What is interesting about the article is that it – as is usual – identifies Jews as Ashkenazim only.

For all that Massad has relationships with Mizrahi Jews, his thinking remains monocausal and racist. Jews never lived in the Middle East and all discussion of Jewish identity and Zionism must be tied exclusively to Europe.

Now there is no question that this is very much what the Ashkenazi Jews have demanded. They have usurped Jewish identity for themselves and made Jewish nationalism a matter of European provenance. The details of this discussion then become very contentious given the deep ambivalence and outright confusion of European Christian and Jewish identity and how that plays into Zionism as an exclusionary form of Jewish identity which seeks to isolate Jews from the Gentile world.

It is this view of Jewish identity that creates a bizarre linkage to Anti-Semites.

And yet the invisible Arab Jews with their roots in the ancient Near East, Medieval Iberia, and the polyglot Ottoman Empire do not match this Eurocentric pattern. Eliminated from Zionist history, the despised Sephardim are equally absent from pro-Palestinian discourse where their claims to Middle Eastern nativity would potentially serve to upset the neat categories that have been established by the Zionists.

It is therefore ironic that Massad, in seeking to counter Zionism, affirms its basic dogma that Jews are Europeans and not Middle Easterners. continued>>
