In Bangladesh and Cambodia, the shocking loss of life by garment factory workers, many of them women, sparked global debate on how to secure safe and decent jobs in our globalised economy. In Europe, the disproportionate impact on women of austerity cuts, and the use of quotas to get more women on corporate boards continue to make headlines.

Even though women have made real gains, we are constantly reminded how far we have to go to realise equality between men and women.

World leaders recognised the pervasiveness of discrimination and violence against women and girls when they signed onto the visionary Millennium Declaration in 2000. Amongst the eight Millennium Development Goals, they included a goal to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

With these goals set to expire in 2015, we are now in a race to achieve them. We are also in the midst a global conversation about what should replace them. It’s time for women to move from the sidelines to the centre.

In a new post-2015 development agenda, we must build on the achievements of the MDGs while avoiding their shortcomings. Everyone agrees that the goals have galvanized progress to reduce poverty and discrimination, and promote education, gender equality, health and safe drinking water and sanitation. more>>

Des femmes ont été victimes d'essais médicaux illégaux d'utérus artificiel.
Ces femmes ont subi une césarienne abusive sans connaitre les risques qu'elle encourraient. Leur enfant a été placé dans un utérus artificiel permettant une gestation extra-corporelle. Leur enfant est décédé. Il s'agit d'une technique qui n'est pas au point. Ces expériences médicales sont interdites.

The anti-Israel community often attempts delegitimize the State of Israel by using the rhetorical argument that the Jewish people left Israel following the Bar Kokhba Revolt, were absent from the area for 2000 years, and didn’t return to their ancestral homeland until the rise of the Zionist movement. The reality is that the Jewish people were never absent from the Land of Israel, for Jews continued to live in as well as settle the Land of Israel despite all of the hardships associated with it since ancient times.

For example, 34 synagogues were found in the Golan Heights dating from the late Roman era up until the Arab conquest. There was also a strong Jewish community present in Ein Gedi that continued to flourish up through the sixth century until Byzantine persecutions brought that community to an end. Additionally, a Jewish community found in Baram existed up through the Crusader period and population estimates from the seventh century as well as from 1517 following the Crusades and Black Plague also indicate a Jewish presence in the land of Israel.

Demonstrations in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah have come alive again as of this past Friday, aiming to show solidarity with the Shamasneh family who have appealed the impending eviction from their home. Unbeknownst to many, the struggle in Sheikh Jarrah reaches far beyond the borders of Jerusalem. In fact, it affects ethnic tensions half a world away by influencing how American Jewish youth internalize the separation between “us” and “them.”

“I was just having a really hard time,” one Jewish student at UC Berkeley told me, speaking of her experience at a Sheikh Jarrah protest she was invited to attend while traveling through Israel. “It was the first time I’d ever talked to a real Palestinian,” she explained, “… [he] doesn’t want to kill me, he tells me he likes some Israelis, it was just crazy.” She would later explain to me that upon reflection, she was “raised, not explicitly but at least very implicitly, with racism towards Arabs, and Palestinians in particular.” I asked whether she meant that she had never explicitly said the words: “I hate Arabs.” “Frankly,” she admitted to my surprise, “I probably did say that.” The Palestinian man she encountered at Sheikh Jarrah was evidently not at all whom she was expecting, but the question remains – how did she imagine her first encounter with a Palestinian and where did this conception come from? continued>>

Les intervenants de ces pages ne sont donc pas forcément des journalistes. En l'occurence, l'auteur, Joseph Massad, est un professeur d'origine palestinienne qui est associé à l’université américaine de Columbia. Il avait déjà publié d'autres textes sur le sujet au même endroit.

A lively argument is heard coming from inside; Adel Sakr against his three daughters. The daughters make a good case and eventually the father gives in. Sakr may be a legendary luthier in the city’s music scene but he is a family man first and foremost. “You can never win with them,” he says smiling.

Perhaps not, but according to Sakr, with a good work ethic you can win other battles. Sakr’s musical vocation began when he was a child: “these things are always noticeable. I was just drawn to it.” Sakr’s inclination toward music was so strong that he created an improvised instrument by pulling strings from different fishing rods over wood. “I had no idea what the different notes were but I experimented with different lengths and thicknesses to produce different sounds.”

Sakr tells how music requires sacrifices. “Many think of a bohemian life when a musician comes to mind but nothing could be further away from the truth. You were either studying music theory during the day or you were out performing and practicing at other times,” he said. more>>

Un matin, un homme pinça les fesses de sa femme en lui disant :

- Si tu raffermissais un peu ça, on pourrait

se débarrasser de ta gaine et de tes bas de contention.

C'était au seuil de l'intolérable mais elle ne dit mot.

Le lendemain matin, il la réveilla en lui pinçant les seins et lui dit :

- Tu sais que si tu raffermissais ça, on pourrait se débarrasser de ton soutien-gorge.

Là, c'en était trop. Elle se retourna, l'agrippa par le zizi et lui dit :

- Tu sais que si tu raffermissais un peu ça, on pourrait se débarrasser du jardinier,

du facteur, du laveur de piscine, et de ton frère...

C'est une jeune fille, en mini-jupe trop serrée, qui fait la queue pour monter dans

l'autobus.

Voyant qu'elle n'y arrive pas car la jupe est vraiment très serrée elle passe ses

mains derrière pour ouvrir un peu la fermeture éclair.

Elle essaye à nouveau mais, rien à faire, la jupe est encore trop serrée.

Elle recommence à passer ses mains derrière pour ouvrir plus la fermeture éclair et

retente de monter dans le bus.

Alors qu'elle n'y arrive toujours pas, un mec, derrière elle, la prend soudainement

par les fesses d'une façon très explicite et la monter dans le bus.

La fille, outrée, insulte copieusement le mec, le prenant pour un obsédé sexuel.

Il lui répond : Cela fait deux fois que vous me descendez ma braguette ! Alors, je

pense que l'on se connaît suffisamment.

C'est Thierry qui rentre à 4h du mat', tout doucement, et se fait surprendre par son

père:

- Nom de Dieu, Thierry, tu as vu l'heure qu'il est !!!

Alors, le Père regarde fièrement son fils et

lui dit :

- Mon fils, je suis fier de toi ! Allons nous asseoir avec deux bières et tu me

Durant la soirée, l'ex va voir le nouveau marié et lui demande d'un air arrogant :

Sa mère ne lui laisse pas terminer sa phrase :

La femme répond :

l'enfant demande :

- Maman, maman, les dames elles font quoi là ?

La mère répond :

- Elles attendent leur mari qui rentre du travail...

Alors, le chauffeur de taxi intervient bruyamment :

- Y'en a marre, il faut appeler les choses par leur nom, les dames sont des putes,

hein, des putes, t'as compris !

Silence de mort dans le taxi pendant un petit moment.

Ensuite, l'enfant continue et demande :

- Mais, maman, ces dames, elles peuvent avoir des enfants ?

Et la mère :

- Bien sûr, comment tu crois qu'ils naissent les chauffeurs de taxi ?

Le docteur arrive, examine le bébé, vérifie son poids et, d'un air un peu préoccupé,

demande à la dame s'il était nourri au sein ou au biberon.

- Hé bien, déshabillez-vous jusqu'à la taille lui dit-il.

Elle s'empresse de le faire.

Puis, il lui pince les mamelons, les presse, les palpe et lui frotte les seins dans

tous les sens dans le cadre d'un examen très minutieux.

en lui demandant de se rhabiller, il lui dit :

- Pas surprenant que le bébé ait un poids si faible. Vous n'avez pas de lait !

- Je sais, dit-elle, je suis la grand-mère, mais je suis quand même contente d'être

venue !

La maîtresse de maison, très énervée par cette requête, lui demande :

- Et qui vous dit ça ?

- C'est Monsieur qui me dit ça.

oncle David que la voiture de Papa vient d'entrer dans le garage...

- D'accord papa.

Quelques secondes plus tard, la fillette revient au téléphone.

- Z'ai fait ce que tu m'as dit, papa.

- Et qu'est-ce qui s'est passé ?

- Ben, maman s'est mise à crier, à sauter hors du lit, toute nue, elle s'est mise à

courir partout, elle a glissé sur le tapis, elle est tombée par la fenêtre, et,

maintenant, elle est toute morte. - Oh mon Dieu ! mon Dieu ! mon Dieu !... Et oncle David ? "

Ben il s'est mis à courir, s'est précipité

par la fenêtre de derrière, dans la piscine, mais il a oublié que le week-end dernier

tu avais vidé la piscine pour la nettoyer et maintenant il est tout mort lui aussi...

Did Muslim Brotherhood Frame Salma Sabahi?

For the past few days, Hamdeen Sabahi, former presidential candidate and founder of the Egyptian Popular Current, has been the target of severe criticism — not for his politics, but for his daughter Salma's alleged misconduct.

Salma Sabahi turned herself in to authorities on May 22, after a prosecutor charged her with fraud and issued a warrant for her arrest. More than 20 plaintiffs accused her of soliciting at least $23,000, promising them quick and easy profits through investment in an online company called Global Ad Mart, which supposedly pays hundreds of dollars to people who agree to watch five advertisement videos every week.

Salma's lawyer, Mohamed Moneib, described the charges as a "political game and revenge on Hamdeen Sabahi.” The Nasserist figure's supporters politicized the case, accusing the Muslim Brotherhood of attacking its most powerful opponent by framing his daughter, who they say is innocent or, at the least, naive. Mohamed Salmawy, president of the Writers' Union of Egypt, charged in an op-ed that Salma's arrest is "shifting the political dispute to an unprecedented level of inhumanity."

The political stalemate in Palestine and Israel over the two-state solution has finally provoked Palestinians from the occupied territories to declare a strategic change in direction of the one-state solution.

Palestinian activists from different political persuasions and careers paths have made a declaration for a democratic state for all its citizens on the 65th anniversary of the Nakba. One of the founders of the new Popular Movement for One Democratic State, a veteran leader of Fatah, said that it is much different than the PLO’s call for a secular democratic state which Israel has often attacked as an attempt to negate the existence of Israel and the Jewish people.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Monitor, Radi Jarai said that this democratic movement has absolutely no limitations on its citizens between Jews and Palestinians. “We will respect the Israel law of return 1951 and will also defend the Palestinians’ right of return.” Jarai, who spent years in an Israel prison, said that the democratic state that he and his friends are calling for can be “a refuge for Jews and Palestinians.”

On April 26, 1654, the last Jewish residents of the Brazilian town of Recife departed the Portuguese colony after being given an order of expulsion.

When the Inquisition was initially implemented in Portugal in 1497, all Jews were forced to undergo baptism, and were forbidden from emigrating. Many continued to practice their Judaism clandestinely, and when they were able to leave, one favored destination was Brazil. There, they made up a good percentage of the 50,000 Europeans who had settled there by 1624, working in commerce and other professions (even as priests), and setting up sugar plantations and mills.

During the 17th century, the combined Spanish-Portuguese monarchy was involved in an ongoing conflict – the Eighty Years War -- with the Netherlands. The war extended to the New World, where the forces of the Dutch East and West India Companies battled with the Portuguese and for a period took possession of Portuguese colonial outposts. By 1630, the Portuguese colony in Recife, Pernambuco, on the Atlantic coast, was among the parts of northeastern Brazil conquered by Dutch forces.

Under the brief period of Dutch rule, converso Jews were permitted to openly practice their faith. During this time, Jews were involved in building infrastructure (roads, bridges, sewerage system) in the colony, in slave trade, and also in the profitable sugar production industry. By 1645, according to Dutch historian Franz Leonard Schalkwijk, there were 1,630 Jews living in Recife, a number equal to the Jewish population of Amsterdam at the time.

The prominence and economic success of Brazil's Jews stirred up resentment among the colony's Christians, who participated in the ongoing Portuguese campaign to push out the Dutch. That campaign went from 1645 until January 26, 1654, the date the Dutch capitulated to Portuguese liberation forces.

In the interim, probably in 1636, the Jews had established a synagogue – Kahal Zur Yisrael – in Recife, the first in the New World. The Jewish community supported a primary Talmud Torah school and a more advanced Gemara school, and a charitable fund.

A book of records that survived provides evidence of all of the services provided by the community, and outlines the customs and regulations by which it functioned. For example, the synagogue had assigned seats, which no one was permitted to change, and on Shabbat Nahamu, the first Sabbath after Tisha Be'Av, funds were collected for the Jewish community in the Land of Israel. This "minute book" lists signatures of 171 members, providing a valuable source of the names of some of the Jewish residents of Brazil. Many of the families involved in the founding of the Shearith Israel Sephardi synagogue in New York could trace their roots back to Recife by way of the minute book.

The transition back to Portuguese rule in 1654 was orderly, and gave Dutch and Jewish residents three months to liquidate their assets (they were permitted to take property with them) and leave. Most Jews went to Amsterdam, some settled on other islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Curacao, and another 23 famously made it to New Amsterdam, later known as New York. Those New Christians who dared to remain in Brazil found themselves pursued by the Inquisition and were sometimes shipped back to Portugal for trial before the Inquisition there.

The two-story building that housed the Kahal Zur synagogue, in the Street of the Jews, was torn down early in the 20th century. Later, it was reconstructed and reopened as a museum of Jewish history in Brazil in 2001.

Je suis né en France. Durant la guerre, ma famille et moi vivions dans un petit village sous une identité d’emprunt et avec de faux papiers. Nous étions persuadés que personne ne savait. Un jour, un voisin est arrivé en courant et nous a dit : “Attention, les Allemands arrivent !” Et nous avons appris que tout le monde savait.
Les Français savaient et ils n’ont rien dit ?
Oui. Je viens de raconter cette histoire à la cérémonie de l’hôpital [où Rafi Walden est chirurgien et dont il est le directeur adjoint]. En chemin, j’ai entendu l’ancien ministre de la Défense Moshe Arens déclarer à la radio : “La leçon de l’Holocauste, c’est que nous devons être forts.” Pour moi, cette leçon a déjà été assimilée. La vraie leçon, c’est que nous devons être compatissants.

L’Holocauste a enseigné à votre famille la compassion et la solidarité. Ces valeurs sont ancrées en vous.
Elles sont ancrées en moi, mais elles ne se limitent pas à mon histoire personnelle : ce sont des valeurs juives. Les devoirs à l’égard des étrangers sont mentionnés trente-six fois dans la Torah, beaucoup plus que l’observance du shabbat, le respect des règles casher, etc. Pourtant, aujourd’hui, on voit des gens qui se disent les gardiens du judaïsme s’opposer radicalement à l’humanisme juif. Georges Moustaki, dont l'entourage vient d'annoncer la mort à Nice à 79 ans, était né en 1934 à Alexandrie, dans cette Egypte cosmopolite dont sont issus tant d'artistes et d'écrivains français.
S'ils n'oublient ni l'injustice ni les fastes indécents et la corruption du roi Farouk (1920-1965), l'animatrice de France Inter Paula Jacques ou le journaliste du Monde Robert Solé, parmi d'autres, ont raconté avec truculence et nostalgie cette société exubérante et corsetée (La Mamelouka, Les femmes avec leur amour...).
Société si douce aux Européens, avant l'arrivée au pouvoir de Gamal Abdel Nasser, la crise du canal de Suez et le départ forcé des juifs d'Egypte après 1956 (il en reste 200, ils étaient 80.000). Parmi ces familles établies sous le soleil égyptien, celle de Joseph Mustacchi, futur Moustaki, dont les parents étaient originaires de l'île grecque de Corfou. suite>>

C'était un homme en blanc, barbe assortie, longs cheveux idoines. Il faisait de lamoto et parlait avec une voix sucrée, comme il chantait. Masculin-féminin,Georges Moustaki était un homme à femmes, qui l'adoraient. Il en avait épousé une, Yannick, dont il eut une fille, Pia, née en 1956. Il en avait aimé certaines, il en avait adulé au moins deux : des femmes en noir, Piaf, le moineau, qui l'asservit pour mieux le révéler, et Barbara, l'exigeante, la "longue dame brune"raccompagnée tard dans la nuit à la sortie des cabarets.

Moustaki était à la fois profondément méditerranéen et superbement atlantique. Mais le secret était ailleurs : "Si je suis autant connu à l'étranger, c'est que je suis très français", disait l'inventeur d'une tour de Babel dont la clé de compréhension serait l'amour du voyage et de l'humanité. L'auteur-compositeur "à la gueule de pâtre grec" est mort le jeudi 23 mai, à Nice, des suites d'une longue maladie. Pharmacienne et romancière, Ghada Abdel Aal habite à Mahalla Al-Qobra, ville industrielle du delta égyptien. Pour se rendre au Caire, elle emprunte l'un des innombrables minibus qui sillonnent l'Egypte. "J'achète toujours deux places, pour être sûre de ne pas être harcelée par un voisin", dit cette femme de 35 ans. Auteure d'un roman savoureux (La Ronde des prétendants, Editions de l'Aube, 2012), Ghada Abdel Aal n'a pourtant rien d'une allumeuse. Elle porte le hijab, qui s'est quasiment généralisé dans son entourage, sans chercher à le "compenser" - comme tant d'autres - par un pantalon moulant ou un maquillage outrancier. "Le harcèlement sexuel, je l'ai intégré depuis l'enfance, précise-t-elle. Dès l'âge de 10 ou 11 ans, quand j'apercevais un groupe de garçons ou que je devais passerdevant un café, je changeais spontanément de trottoir."

Le harcèlement peut être qualifié de onzième plaie d'Egypte (regarder vers la 4^eminute de la vidéo). En effet, la situation prend une tournure inquiétante : les institutions sont discréditées, la police est absente, l'insécurité augmente, les agressions contre les chrétiens se multiplient, alors que la hausse du chômage, la hausse des prix et la pénurie de gaz ou d'essence provoquent des drames. suite>>

But let me tell you a little known-fact: as your husband's family was fleeing their village, a greater number of Jewish refugees were streaming out of the Arab world with one suitcase—in the opposite direction.

Over 800,000 Jewish refugees fled in the years immediately following 1948. This is the Jewish Nakba—a forgotten tragedy shrouded in silence. One of those refugee families was mine. We lived in a comfortable house in a riverside Jewish neighbourhood in Baghdad. continued>>

The winding, narrow streets of Old Cairo behind Khan El-Khalili have traditionally been bustling with an array of economic activity. Today, nestled among the ancient houses and mosques of the Fatimid era, many traditional workshops still remain, defying modern trends and contemporary production practices alike.

These little holes-in-the-wall, and the streets where they make their home, are filled with the rattling, clunking music of the work within, accompanied by recitation of the Quran from a nearby radio.

Known as the Khan Abo-Ta’ya or Haret El-Yahoud, (the Jewish Quarter), the area is among Khan El-Khalili’s primary providers of the glittering souvenirs (necklaces, pendants, etc.) which fill its boutiques and draw in tourists.

“We can work with any type of core material, be it gold, silver, copper or anything else,” said Mohamed Zaki, a 64 year old craftsman who has been in his profession for 50 years. “We even used to work with ivory imported from African countries before it was banned many years ago.”

Zaki and his fellow workers provide the bazaars with the little silver or painted parts which are integrated in ornaments and souvenirs. “These tiny objects cannot be manufactured by modern industrial devices; we are their only makers,” he said.

The work is always customised; traders come to Zaki’s workshop and provide him with an image of what they need or give him general guidelines so he can produce the item in question. more>>

Both Massad, and ‘Open Zion’, ignore the experience of Middle Eastern Jews

The pro-Palestine blogosphere has been abuzz with the deletion of an article on Zionism by Columbia University professor Joseph Massad from the Al-Jazeerawebsite (you can read the Massad article here). What is interesting about the article is that it – as is usual – identifies Jews as Ashkenazim only.

For all that Massad has relationships with Mizrahi Jews, his thinking remains monocausal and racist. Jews never lived in the Middle East and all discussion of Jewish identity and Zionism must be tied exclusively to Europe.

Now there is no question that this is very much what the Ashkenazi Jews have demanded. They have usurped Jewish identity for themselves and made Jewish nationalism a matter of European provenance. The details of this discussion then become very contentious given the deep ambivalence and outright confusion of European Christian and Jewish identity and how that plays into Zionism as an exclusionary form of Jewish identity which seeks to isolate Jews from the Gentile world.

It is this view of Jewish identity that creates a bizarre linkage to Anti-Semites.

And yet the invisible Arab Jews with their roots in the ancient Near East, Medieval Iberia, and the polyglot Ottoman Empire do not match this Eurocentric pattern. Eliminated from Zionist history, the despised Sephardim are equally absent from pro-Palestinian discourse where their claims to Middle Eastern nativity would potentially serve to upset the neat categories that have been established by the Zionists.

It is therefore ironic that Massad, in seeking to counter Zionism, affirms its basic dogma that Jews are Europeans and not Middle Easterners. continued>>
