The Green RV, my Mobile Base Camp is approaching it’s 100,000 mile celebration! As a part of the party, I wanted to increase the fashion and functionality of my front bumper so I turned to the guys at BuckStop Truckware to design my heavy duty winch bumper. As good as it looks, it greatly adds to my safety on the open road.

I can’t tell you the number of times, over the last 19 months that my adventures have kept me pushing it, early in the morning and late at night. In addition to vehicles big and small, I have shared the road with numerous dear, elk, moose and even a roadside black bear. Driving at dawn and dusk can be a full contact sport in some parts of our country. With animal/vehicle accidents on the rise my leading edge of defense, a huge part of my safety plan is a bumper that can handle the impact. I’ve found a great piece of RV gear that helped me get many sound nights of sleep since its installation. The Smart Light 1000 is a motion detector, a battery monitoring system, a way to employ LED’s to dramatically reduce your lighting power draw and one of the newest additions to the Green RV.

Mary Burrows

Our guest today is Mary Burrows. Mary is the Manager of Chemical Development at Thetford Corporation, the world’s leading maker of portable and permanent RV toilets, and the holding tank deodorants and related additive products used in and on RVs. Mary received her Bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1980, with majors in Chemistry and English. She has worked at Thetford for over twenty years, and spends much of her time researching and developing RV deodorant and cleaning products. In a study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, and summarized in Packaging Digest in Feb 2009:

“Four out of five people say they are still buying green products and services today - which sometimes cost more - even in the midst of a U.S. recession.”

“Half of the 1,000 people surveyed say they are buying just as many green products now as before the economic downturn, while 19% say they are buying more green products.

Fourteen percent say they are buying fewer environmentally green products.”

“About one in three say they don’t know how to tell if green claims are true. One in 10 consumers blindly trust green product claims.”

“Consumers are verifying green claims by reading the packaging (24%) and turning to research (going online, reading studies, 17%).”

In an article from Brandweek in Feb 2009, quoting from a study by Mintel:

“A $17.7 million business in 2003, the Chicago-based market research company says the green cleaning category quadrupled sales to $64.5 million by 2008. by 2013, Mintel anticipates eco-friendly cleaners will do an astounding $623 million in business and account for 30 percent of the household cleaners market by then (compared with 3 percent last year)”.

“Green Works brought green cleaning products into mainstream supermarkets, which have seen green sales increase more than 170% from 2007-08 and market share rise 16 percentage points.”

As you can see green is growing rapidly. Many manufacturers want to claim their products are green. The only way to know for certain if a product is green is to look for products that are certified or recognized green by a third party.

I really enjoyed my time with Phil, Vanessa, Rita & Doug at PressurePro last week. That their products are manufactured here in the United States is just one part of the story. The entire team brings a passion to operating your vehicle with proper tire pressure. Phil, the head of this family owned business is the type of guy you meet, and 5 minutes later feel like you’ve known a lifetime.

It was also an educational trip. To learn about the myriad benefits of a PressurePro system including economical, environmental and safety was truly eye opening.

It has been my goal to travel North America discovering wild places, down the open road and off the beaten path, all the while reporting on breaking news, commentary and techniques for surviving and thriving in the 21st Century. An importing part of that adventure is my Mobile Base Camp , a Lance Truck Camper powered by the natural energies of the sun, wind and rain.

An additional component in reporting my explorations and interviews falls into the category of both the BuriedLogic Audio blog posts and the BuriedLogic Podcasts. Thanks to the technology from the satellite experts MotoSat Advanced Mobile Satellite Systems I am now able to do so from anywhere I go. The new F2 DataStorm from MotoSat was installed on The Mobile Base Camp yesterday at their facilities in Salt Lake City.

Keith McCord from KSL TV 5 here in Salt Lake stopped by to cover the installation and learn from Royal Lamb about the company, its people and the professionals that make it all happen.

I also had a chance to visit with Jim and Peg from American RVer and record an episode for a future show.

To call it an irony is a complete under statement! Yesterday I spent the morning with KDVR reporter Dan Daru highlighting tips for winterizing your car, yourself and your family.

Dan & I discussed lifesaving technologies and gear from HEMA Road Atlas, SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, SOG Knives, and emergency roadside flares. We even had a chance to talk about one of my favorite new pieces of gear, the PowerSource 1800 from MySolarBackup.com.

The overall message from the four segments was one of mental preparedness in advance of emergency situations.

Honest to goodness, leaving Denver I headed towards Salt Lake City for a Friday morning to be spent with my good friends at MotoSAT, along with an appearance on the local NBC affiliate with Keith McCord; 50 miles outside of Salt Lake, I find myself alongside of the road! Over 93,000 miles on the Green RV and this is my first breakdown. I had my flares, emergency roadside reflectors and cell service, and thanks to my good friends at the Good Sam Club (more to come on that in a later post!), and a few really nice folks along the way, I head towards Pomona for the California RV Show.
