This is a game played by 2 players. It cannot be played by more than 2 players and is played using 30 cards. Regular jokers have no role here. However there are 2 additional jokers, the seven of hearts which is the big joker and the seven of spades which is the small joker.

Cards Used In Seven Eight

This game will be played with the following cards:

Spades => 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A
Diamonds => 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A
Clubs => 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A
Hearts => 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A

Aim & Objective

The dealer has to make more than 7 hands in this game in order to win the game and the one who cuts or calls the trump or is given the cards first (caller or cutter) has to make more than 8 hands. If the dealer makes seven hands and the player who decides or calls the trump makes 8 hands then it is a draw. If the dealer makes less than 7 hands, then he loses the game. Likewise if the player who calls the trump makes less than 8 hands, then he loses the game.

How To Begin

One players shuffles the cards, 30 in number and offers it to the other player to cut. The other player cuts the cards and then the dealer will give 5 cards to this player to call or say the trump suit from. We'll consider that "Hearts" is called the trump suit by the cutter or the one who receives the 5 cards first. The dealer then takes the 5 cards for himself. This completes the distribution of 10 cards.

After these 10 cards are distributed, the trump caller/cutter who has received 5 of these cards will call the trump. Say he calls the trump "Hearts" since he has two cards of hearts - the King and the Queen of hearts. He also has two cards of spades, eight and nine of spades and one card of club, the jack of clubs, for example.

Next, the dealer puts 5 cards face down in a sequence one beside the other on the table or the floor infront of the cutter or the caller (the trump caller). These cards belong to the caller. These will not be seen by him in the beginning of the game. Next the dealer will place 5 cards, one beside the other infront of himself. Again, he won't be able to see these cards in the beginning but will be able to see these cards one at the time after the card placed on top of it face up has been played. Same is the case for the caller. In between, these two rows, there will be a gap where the cards will be played. This completes another distribution of 10 cards making a total of 20 cards, that has been distributed.

Next the dealer will place 5 cards, each card face up on top of the corresponding card face down infront of the caller. Then he will place, 5 cards on top of the corresponding 5 face down cards, infront of himself. This completes the distribution of the last 10 cards.

Score

The cards of the trump suite have the highest score and the trump is used to cut other cards when that suite is not available by either player.

In our example, we have considered "Hearts" the trump. So the lowest card of the trump is the 8 of hearts, followed by 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in the increasing order of score. Higher than the ace of the trump suit is the score of the 7 of spades, which is the small joker and higher than that is the score of 7 of hearts which is the big joker.

If the trump suit was clubs, then the hierarchy would be 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A, 7 (of spades), 7 (of hearts) in the increasing order. In short, a 7 of hearts always wins while making a hand with any of the other 29 cards and the 7 of spades always wins while making hands with any of the other 28 cards except the 7 of hearts.

How To Play

Now in our game, the caller has the K and Q of hearts in his hand and is not sure whether the dealer would have either of A, 7 (of spades), 7 (of hearts) in his hand. Also, from amongst the 5 cards placed face-up on the table on top of the 5 face down cards, he has an 8 of trump and the J of trump (hearts) and 9 of diamonds, Ace of clubs and a jack of spades.

Now the caller sees that from amongst the 5 face-up cards of the dealer, there is one 9 of clubs. So he plays the card, Ace of clubs and opens the card underneath it i.e. turns the face down card underneath the ace of clubs to face up. The dealer does not want to reveal that he has an 8 of clubs say in his hand, so he plays the 9 of clubs on top of the Ace of clubs and opens the card underneath it. So the caller makes a hand.

If the dealer did not have any club card, neither in his hand nor from amongst the cards laid out face up in front of him, then he can play a trump card, say a 8 of hearts if he has it and take the hand. As long as the card of the corresponding suit that has been played is there, that suit has to be played by either player. For instance, if the play is of clubs then a club has to be played by the other player, if he has one from amongst the 10 cards (5 in hand and 5 face-up on the floor/table).

The player who makes a hand gets the turn. So in this way the game continues until all the cards are out.

If you have ever wondered how to teach kids to play cards then this is the game to start with. This is the best game to teach your kids and educate them about playing cards.

The words "Jack Thief" are derived from the Hindi words "Gulaam Chor" as the game is called in Hindi where Gulaam means Jack and chor means a robber or a thief. This game is played with 51 cards. The jokers have no role here and out of 4 jacks, one jack is removed which can be of any suit.

This game is usually played by 2 players or more. Majority of the times it is played by kids or elders who wish to teach the kids.

In our example we'll consider a two-player game.

Distributing the cards

After the shuffle, it would be very tedious for the dealer to give one card to each and every player since the entire 51 cards have to be distributed amongst all the players equally or nearly equally. It won't matter much, if he keeps the cards on a uniform surface, which can be a table or a floor and try to divide the cards equally by splitting. The cards are divided into two piles. Once the cards are divided into 2 piles, both the players will take one pile each which should be of 25 cards for one and 26 cards for another but can even be of 23 cards for one player and 28 cards for another player. The slight variations in the number of cards do not matter.

How To Play

After both the players get their respective bunch or pile of cards, the process of separation begins. All paired cards are kept face up and are put in a separate pile. For example, if the player 1 has two aces, two Kings, two 10s, two 5s, then he will remove these cards. These cards are kept face up for the other player to see and then pushed on the left or the right because they would not be used in the game anymore. Similarly for cards such as four 7s, four 4s and so on, because these form two pairs.

After the pairs are weeded out, both the players will be left with odd number of cards usually one of each, since if there are three cards of six say, then two of them form pairs and are discarded and only one six is left.

In our example, say Player 1 has 5 cards (one king, one ten, one four, one seven) and Player 2 has 4 cards (one king, one ten, one four, one seven, one jack). Now each player has to pull one card from the other players' hands alternately. The one who dealt the cards will pull last.

Say, Player 1 has done the shuffle and dealt the cards. Then he will keep all the 5 cards in his one or both the hands after rearranging them as many times as he wants. Player 2 takes the first turn to pull one card from the hands of player 1. He pulls a four, for example, and then he completes two 4s, which are then discarded.

Then Player 1, pulls or draws one card from player 2. He draws a ten that completes a pair of tens which are then discarded. Then Player 2 will draw and he draws a King thus completing the King pair, which is then discarded. So King, Ten and Four has been discarded. Now player 1 has just one seven and player 2 has one seven and one jack. And it is the turn of player 1 to pull.

If the player 1 pulls seven then his sevens complete the pair and he wins the game and player 2 becomes the Jack Thief because he has the jack left. If the player 1 pulls out the Jack from player 2, then the game continues with player 2 getting a turn to pull. This would go on till the sevens have formed a pair with one of the players and are discarded and the one with the Jack is the loser and is known as the Jack Thief.

Briefing

Playing cards are used to play Killer but Killer is not exactly a card game. You cannot play this game if you do not know how to wink. I do not recommend that you go about winking at men and women to practice for this game.

A minimum of 4 players are required to play this game. In a 4 player game, one will be a thief/killer and one will be a policeman or a cop. For an 8 player game, two policemen can be there and two killers. Similarly for a 12-player game, 3 cops and 3 killers and so on.

Objective

The main aim of the game, is for the policeman or the cop to find out who the thief or the killer is and for the killer to kill all regular players or civilians before the cop catches him.

In this game, a killer is one who gets a jack and a cop is one who gets an ace. The killer(s) has/have the role of winking with one eye and killing the civilians or the regular players and the cop(s) has/have the role of catching the killer either winking or at least figuring out who the killer is through calculated guess work.

In our example, we'll consider a 10 player game with 2 cops/policemen and 2 killers.

How To Play

From the pack of cards, separate out ten cards. 2 of them should be aces (so there will be 2 cops) and 2 of them should be jacks (so there will be 2 killers). The remaining six cards can be of any denomination. For example, in our case these six cards are three of spades, clubs and hearts each and four of Diamonds, Hearts and clubs each. The 2 Aces are the ace of spades and the ace of hearts and the 2 jacks are the jack of Diamonds and the jack of clubs. The person who gets the ace will be a cop and the person who gets the jack will be the killer. So when the 10 cards are distributed, the two persons who get the two aces viz. ace of spades and the ace of hearts are the 2 cops and the two persons who get the two jacks viz. the jack of diamonds and the jack of clubs are the 2 killers and they have the role of winking.

Once the ten cards are distributed amongst the 10 players, the game begins. The players will start looking at each other. The two killers i.e. those who got the jacks will try and wink at each player individually looking at them and the cops i.e. those with the aces will try to catch the killers who are winking. There are six other players in the fray other than the 2 cops and the 2 killers. To each player who is neither a cop, nor a killer (i.e. a regular player) whenever he is winked at for the first time by one of the killers, he has to say "I am dead" and is out of the game. That is to say, he can no longer participate in the current game. Let's say the player who gets the four of Clubs is winked (with one eye, of course) at by the player (killer) who gets the jack of Diamonds. Then the player who gets who got the four of clubs will say, "I am dead" and he will be out of the game i.e. he has no further role in the game. Now 9 players are remaining, the 2 cops, the 2 killers and 5 civilians or regular players.

If while winking, the cop catches the killer who is winking then that killer is out of the game. In a 4-player game, the game is over when the killer is caught. In our game of 10-players, there are 2 killers that have to be caught. So if the 2nd killer is also caught winking by a cop before he kills all the regular players or civilians, the game is over and the cops win and some of the civilians are saved.

When in our game, it has reached the point where 9 players are remaining, one killer with the jack of clubs winks at the player (civilian) with the four of diamonds. The player with the four of diamonds says, "I am dead". Now, while this was going on, one the cops, the player with the ace of spades sees this and says loudly in presence of the entire group, "You're the one, you are the killer, pointing to or taking the name of the person with the Jack of diamonds." Then, whoever that player is, has to show his card face up to the entire group of ten players, or at least those players who are playing the game. If this player actually has the Jack of Diamonds, then he has been caught by the cop and is out of the game.

If he does not have the jack of diamonds and has another card say a three of spades, that means that he is a civilian. In that case, (i.e. if he is a civilian), he may decide to show the card only to the cop and not to anyone else, in which case the cop has to show his card as well to the civilian so that the civilian knows that the cop is not faking. If the civilian shows the card to all the players, then he becomes a known civilian. Then, all the players know that he is a civilian including the killers. The game continues.

In a third scenario (say the player does not have the Jack of Diamonds and nor the three of spades and neither any of the other civilian cards), if he has the ace of hearts say, that means that the cop with the ace of spades doubts the cop with the ace of hearts to be the killer, then this doubt of the cop with the ace of spades can be cleared by both the cops showing their cards to each other and not to anyone else. The game continues.

Tips

A rule can be made that a cop can make only 2 wrong guesses. If he judges the civilians wrongly twice, then the cop is out of the game. In our example, if both the cops are out the game would end and neither the civilians nor the killers and certainly not the cops win. In this case there would be no clear winners.

Continuing

Let us assume that the person i.e. the killer has been caught. So now in the game, seven players are remaining viz. the 2 cops with the 2 aces (ace of Spades and the ace of Hearts), the killer with the jack of clubs and four civilians with the three of spades, three of clubs, three of hearts and the four of hearts each.

If a killer winks at the cop and the cop sees the obvious and catches him winking, the killer is out. Now say, that the killer with the jack of clubs winks at the cop with the ace of hearts without suspecting that he is the cop. Then the cop, the one with the ace of hearts catches him and says, "You are the one, you are the killer pointing to the person or naming him". So the second killer has also been caught and the game is over. Four civilians are saved from the killers.

If the 2 killers manage to kill all the civilians by winking, before the cops catch them, then the killers win the game.

So this is a very simple game that will leave many people smiling and laughing.

A 13-cards Ramee game is usually played between 2 players with one pack of cards. If three players are playing, then a 9-cards Ramee is played with one deck. For 4-players and more 21-cards Ramee is played and two or more decks are needed.

In this article I'll explain how to play a 13-cards Ramee.

Aim and Objective

The main aim of this game is to make sequences. The sequence is minimum of 3 cards. One sequence of three cards without a joker is compulsory. The ace can be used in two types of sequences as in: Queen, King, Ace, and Ace, One, Two.

Another type of sequence will be for example, 3 or more Kings, 3 or more Fours, 3 or more Sevens and so on. But you need one plain sequence in the ascending or descending order as mentioned in the previous paragraph.

The sequence is always of the same suit. That is all cards that constitute a sequence has to be of the same suit and cannot be of different suits. For instance, for a sequence of Five, Six and Seven, either all will be of clubs or all spades or all hearts or all diamonds but not one heart and two clubs, i.e., no mixing and matching.

The person who utilizes all the 13 cards in making sequences fastest wins the game. To indicate that you have won the game, you have to pick up one card from the pile or use an existing card in your hand if the picked up card is useful for you and place it face down either on the table or on the floor or on your hand along with the other cards face up. Once a card is kept face down then you are the winner and you have to show the cards to the other player(s). If the other player finds that there is something wrong in one sequence then you will have -100 points to your name.

Point System

Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten => all are worth ten points each
The remaining cards => are worth the points of their denominations.

How To Play

In our example, we'll consider a 2-player game.

The dealer will play last. He will ask the other player to cut and take out one card from the pile he cuts. This card will be an additional joker, i.e., a joker in addition to the regular jokers. Example, if the player who cuts, takes out nine of spades and places it in the center, then all the other 3 "nines" will be jokers and can be used for making a sequence.

However, one plain sequence without any of the jokers, regular or additional is a must.

After the cards are dealt, 13 cards to each player, the remaining cards are kept at the center on top of the nine of spades and the first card on the pile is kept face up on the deck.

The person who made the cut takes the first turn. If the card kept face up on the pile is say "King of Diamonds" and is useful for him in making a sequence or he feels he can make a sequence later on with it, he can take it, or can pull one from the deck. He can then put either the same card face down or another unwanted card from his hand will be kept face up on the table or the floor.

Then the next person proceeds to take his turn by either drawing the top card from the deck or taking the top card that is face up near the deck.

The game continues until one of the players has completed all the sequences in which case he'll either draw one card from the pile that has face down cards and keep the card face down on the table or simply pick up a card discarded by the other player and place it face down, or pick up a card, add it to the sequence and use another card to be put face down declaring "Ramee".

After the Ramee the points of the loser(s) are counted. The points of the cards used in the sequences are not counted. The points of the stand-alone cards i.e., those which do not fit the sequences are counted.

For instance, if the player who loses has three cards remaining that does not fit into a sequence viz. two of clubs, queen of spades and King of Hearts then his points are -22. The points of the winner will then be +22. This is because the two of clubs carries 2 points and the queen and the king, 10 points each.

A rare case is when the joker does not fit any of the sequences. In our example, we had all nines as the jokers (since nine of spades was taken out) along with the regular jokers. A joker that does not fit any of the sequences carries 10 points. So, if the person who lost had a nine of diamonds that did not fit any of the sequence the nine of diamonds would carry 10 points and not nine points, since it is first considered as a joker and then a normal nine. You cannot use 2 jokers in making one sequence.

In our example the nine would have its use as a nine in certain cases for a sequence like Eight of Spades, Nine of Spades and Ten of Spades or as a joker as in three 2s where one of the 2s is a nine.

Definition

Judgment is a game where you have to predict the number of hands you'll make and try to make those number of hands that you predict. It is a game usually for 3 or more players. Even 2 players can play but then the game won't be that interesting. 5 players can play the game using one deck of 52 cards. Jokers have no role here.

Example

Suppose in our game the game is between four players.

The dealer plays last and the one to whom he distributes the cards first or gives the 1st card first plays first. A total of 10 cards are given to each player to begin with in the first round. With every game the number of cards given to every player will decrease. In the first game there are 10 cards, in the second game there will be 9 cards given to each player, 8 cards in the third game and so on until the last game will have only 1 card for each player.

There is a pre-decided trump suit in every round. In the first game of 10 cards to every player, the trump is "Spades" followed by Diamonds, Clubs and Hearts in that order when nine, eight and seven cards are given respectively. On the game where six cards are given, again the trump changes to Spades. That is, the sequence of the trump is "S D C H (Soon Deeds Complete Here)" (Spades, Diamonds, Clubs and Hearts).

How to play

After the cards are dealt, the player who got the 1st card first will be the first to predict the hands that he will make after looking at the cards. The trump is spades in the first game. With ten cards given to each player, there is a possibility of making a maximum of 10 hands.

All the other players, at their turn (in counterclockwise direction) make their predictions on the number of hands they will make. As an example, assume the 1st player made the prediction of 5 hands, Player 2 of three hands, Player 3 of one hand and Player 4 of four hands. After the predictions are over, the game begins with player who was dealt the 1st card first playing first.

Suppose the first player plays the King of Hearts, and all the players have hearts with them so that the trump is not played but no one has the ace of hearts, so the King of hearts wins over other cards of hearts and he makes a hand.

Hierarchy

The Ace carries the maximum score, followed by King, then Queen, then Jack, then a ten and so on up to the two which has the least score.

The one who makes a hand gets the next turn. In our game, the first player makes a hand in the 1st round of the first game of 10 cards. So he gets the turn to play first again. In the second round, he plays the ace of spades, say, and since spade is the trump, so all the players must play their spades. In the absence of the trump with any of the players, that player can play any other card. So now this first player makes a second hand because the denominations of all the spade cards are less in score than the ace.

In the third round, again our first player plays first as he gets the turn back. This time he plays the ten of clubs. The player 2 then plays 5 of clubs followed by the Jack of clubs by player 3 and the five of spades by player 4. So in this case the 4th player has made the hand. Player 4 used the trump to make a hand since he did not have a club card. Trump over-rules all the other suits.

In this way, the game goes on till all the remaining seven cards in the first game are played. If the 1st player makes 5 hands as he predicted he gets 15 points. If Player 2 makes four hands instead of three that he predicted then he gets zero points. If player 3 makes one hand as he predicted, he gets 11 points and if player 4 fails to make his prediction of four hands, he gets 0 points.

If a player has predicted zero hands and does not make any hand, then he gets ten points. The points table is maintained on a score sheet or a paper.

The next game begins - this time with 9 cards given to each player. And so on.

Definition

Declare is a card game played by 3 or more people. If 4 people are playing the game, then one pack of 52 cards (without the jokers) is sufficient. For 4 to 8 people, two packs of cards are required, without jokers.

Aim & Objective

To have the minimum number of points and declare the game once you feel that you have the cards with minimum points.

The Point System

After shuffling the cards, the dealer distributes 8 cards to each player. The cards ranging from the ace up to ten carry their respective number of points. As for example, An ace of spades is one point, a seven of diamonds is seven points, a three of clubs is three points and so on. The Jacks and the Kings are ten points each. The Queens are "Zero" points. So ideally if a person were to declare with all the eight cards in his hand, then he would have a minimum of 4 points if he had all the 4 Queens and all the 4 aces. He would be the winner in a game of four players with a single pack of cards.

Note

When a person declares the game he may have eight cards or less than eight cards in his hand.

How To Play

After the cards are dealt, the person who gets the 1st card first, while the cards are being distributed, plays first and the person who shuffles plays last with the turns going in a counter-clockwise direction.

Now suppose, in your eight cards, you have:

1 Queen of clubs
1 Ace of spades
2 sevens, a seven of diamonds and a seven of hearts
1 Jack of clubs
3 eights, an eight of spade, an eight of diamonds and an eight of clubs

That makes it a total of 8 cards. Now, at your turn, you can play either 1 card or more than 1 card if they are of the same denomination and you have to then draw one card from the deck. If you feel that you have the least number of points, then you may say "declare" and declare your game. The turn in which you say declare, you cannot play any card or cards and cannot draw any card.

For any game to be declared, at least one round, (i.e., one turn for each player) has to be completed. In other words, a player can declare only after one turn of all the players is over. Now suppose, in your first turn, you decide to play three cards viz. the three eights (eight of spades, diamonds and clubs), which makes it a total of 24 points (8x3) and you pull one card (since there are no cards kept face up played by anybody because you are the first player) from the deck. You get a card, for example, five of hearts which is worth 5 points. So you gave 24 points and picked up 5 points, which is effectively giving up 19 points, and this is pretty good.

The game then proceeds to other players. In your second turn, you play the 2 sevens, viz. seven of diamonds and seven of hearts making a total of 14 points that you give up. Now, you may decide to pick up or draw a card from the pile at the center but you feel that your partner who has played two sixes, one six of clubs and one six of diamonds is good enough. So you pick up the last six that can be of clubs or diamonds. In this case we'll consider the six of clubs that is face up that your partner before you has played.

You can only pick up or draw one card, either from the pile facing down or the last card player by the person before you but not the person prior to him.

Now you have the following cards after your 2 turns:

1 Queen of clubs (points: 0)
1 Ace of spades (points: 1)
1 Jack of clubs (points: 10)
1 six of clubs (points: 6)
1 five of hearts (points: 5)

Now in your third turn, you play the Jack of clubs worth 10 points and pick up a two of diamonds from the pile. So now you have the following cards:

1 Queen of clubs (points: 0)
1 Ace of spades (points: 1)
1 two of diamonds (points: 2)
1 six of clubs (points: 6)
1 five of hearts (points: 5)

So your effective points are 6+5+2+1, which is 14 from five cards. So in your fourth turn, you neither play nor draw any card, but you say "declare", after counting your points, which in this case is 14. Now, if someone else also has 14 points then you lose and you get twice the number of points of a player with maximum points. Precisely, if your points are 14 and you declare the game and the points of the other three players are 14, 17 and 29, then you get 58 points (twice of 29). The other players get their respective points.

But if you have 14 points, and the other three players have 17, 28 and 29 points then you effectively get 0 points and you are the winner of the 1st game. The other players get their respective points.

You can maintain the scores on a paper or a book or a diary and set your goal as the first to reach "200" loses.

Many new players wonder how one actually gets a rating in SCRABBLE. Now, we're talking about an official rating, not one you would get on SCRABBLE Beta or with the ISC WordBiz player — I mean an "Official SCRABBLE Rating". A rating that allows you to play in the National SCRABBLE Championship (NSC), which is held once every year (sometimes two).

The latest NSC was held on August 7–11, 2010 at the Hotel InterContinental Dallas at 15201 Dallas Parkway in Addison, TX. Nigel Richards won the $10,000 first place prize, and soon moved on to the 2010 World Players Championship (WPC). If you think you have what it takes to compete in the 2011 National SCRABBLE Championships, it's time to get yourself a rating, or you're just another SCRABBLE genius without anything to show for it.

So, how do you earn a SCRABBLE rating?

First, before answers, you must have an overall knowledge of the system:

In the past, players needed a National SCRABBLE Association (NSA) Official Rating to enter the NSC, but that has all changed now, thanks to Hasbro.

The NSA was directly sponsored by Hasbro, who provided funding which allowed the NSA to govern all SCRABBLE Official Tournaments and Clubs in North America, including the NSC. It was the only organization running licensed SCRABBLE activity in the United Stated and Canada. But in January, 2010, Hasbro dropped regular funding to the NSA, and in turn, the NSA forfeited their command.

Hasbro and the NSA (still operating under Hasbro's direction) are now focusing their moneys in recruitment tactics and endorsing and governing school clubs and tournaments, like the National School SCRABBLE Championship, along with casual SCRABBLE play.

So, if the NSA doesn't provide SCRABBLE ratings anymore, who does?

With the anticipated lack of funding from Hasbro, the NSA transferred responsibility for official clubs and tournaments, over the course of 2009, to the newly formed North American SCRABBLE Players Association (NASPA).

Since funding is no longer provided by a powerhouse such as Hasbro, the NASPA runs off the fees imposed on its members. An annual membership costs $30 US (regardless of residence: US, Canada, overseas) and a $0.50 US fee, per player, for every game played. Without paying these fees, you will not be able to play in sanctioned tournaments and have your personal achievements officially recognized.

Okay, so now that that's out of the way, how do you get an "Official SCRABBLE Rating"!?!

The answer is simple: Play in any rated tournament affiliated with the NASPA. That's it — besides paying membership dues, as stated above.

Basically, you can't play in the SCRABBLE Championships until you have earned a rating, and you can't earn a rating until you have played in one NASPA-sanctioned tournament, and you can't play in NASPA-sanctioned tournaments until you have paid your dues.

You will enter your first tournament game as an "unrated" player.

Now that you've paid NASPA dues, where do you find these SCRABBLE Tournaments?

To find a tournament to earn your very first SCRABBLE rating, check out the NASPA Tournament Calendar. It provides you with information on all upcoming sanctioned tournaments.

So, what about these ratings? How exactly do they work?

Well, as an unrated player, your rating will first start to grow after your first tournament game. As you continue to play in NASPA-sanctioned tournaments, your rating matures based on your wins and the ratings of your opponents.

This numerical rating decides which level you will be placed in tournaments, and also determines if you qualify for certain tournaments, such as the World SCRABBLE Championship (WSC).

NASPA provides a Rating Calculator to see your progress.

But how is the rating determined?

Figuring out your Official SCRABBLE Rating is not as simple as one might think. As stated before, your numerical rating is based off your initial tournament rating, then the rating of your opponents, and next your win-loss record.

To fully understand the mathematical calculations of ones NASPA SCRABBLE rating, it's best to visit the source for answers. Check out the Overview for the ratings system directly from NASPA. But that's for those who already have a rating. To find out how one computes an "initial" rating, which is ten times more complicated, check out the page (a detailed description) on how an Initial Rating is determined, in pseudocode.
