How To Do a Sponge Ball Magic Routine

Sponge balls are a very cool magic effect. But you will have to master palming first. You will get very good reactions. The best part is that you can simply keep them in your pocket. Here is how to start.

Step 1 Palming

Begin by pretending to put a ball in one hand while secretly keeping the ball in the other hand.

Step 2 Say the Spell

Wave your wand and say a spell revealing there is no ball in your fist. Remember to not direct attention to the palmed ball.

Step 3 Reveal the Ball

Now, there are plenty of options you can do. You can take the palmed ball out of your or their ear, leg, etc.

Step 4 More Variations

There are many variations of this trick. You can do Step 1, but then squeeze the palmed ball and a new ball together and give the two balls to the volunteer with the effect being that your ball jumped from your hand to their hand.

Tips

To add to the effect, you should get many sponge effects like sponge rabbits, sponge to square, or growing sponge ball.
Carry sponge balls in a loose, spacey bag.

If balls become squished, soak in warm water and gently dry with a paper towel. It will also make them a little bigger.

Warnings

Practice this illusion over and over (in front of a mirror or on video) until you can do it perfectly with your eyes closed.
A good magician never reveals his secrets.

Especially today, with the internet making information so readily available, people of all ages, all around the world, are trying to learn magic tricks. Unfortunately, going about this the wrong way won't make you into a magician at all, but will instead make you into someone who simply knows how a few tricks work.

If you actually want to start learning to be a magician, and really appreciate the craft, you should follow these basic steps.

Step 1 Go to the bookstore, or your local magic shop

If there's a magic shop in your area, start off there and you'll likely find people to point you in the right direction. Otherwise, just head to your local bookstore. The material most magician shops will recommend are the types of books available at any major book chain. So go to the Games Section--where most magic books tend to hide out--and look for material on magic tricks.

Step 2 Choose a book that speaks to you

The good news and bad news is that most beginner books give you the same tricks. This means whichever one you buy will probably be fine, so just ensure it's one that you can follow along with easily. If you are a visual person, for instance, try a book with a lot of pictures.

Step 3 Read the whole book

The most common blunder most beginner magicians make is looking for the tricks they want to learn, and ignoring the rest. You'll find that the most mundane of tricks in these starter books will teach you skills that will be very beneficial as you grow as a magician. Even if you only like card magic, the ideas taught in coin magic will prove useful, and so on.

Step 4 Practice!

Practice all the tricks in the book. Again, obvious but easily ignored. Many people focus on the few tricks that appeal to them, and even then don't often practice enough. If you don't practice, you'll quickly find the idea of being a magician becomes a bore, because you will know secrets but have no skills. By learning and practicing all the beginner books have to offer, you'll quickly learn the tools that the best professionals use.

Step 5 Now find a focus

Now that you've learned a variety of magic tricks, you have an idea of what the world of magic has to offer. Did you most enjoy the cards, the coins or the larger illusions? Start focusing on what you liked best and start making that your expertise. Remember, there's no reason you can't start with a new expertise down the road.

Tips

While magic blogs and columns aren't the best place to start your magic learning, they are a great tool to help develop the tools the beginner material has introduced you too.
Resist the temptation to spend a lot of money on props from magic stores. Wait until you have a better idea of what kind of props you'll actually make use of. Otherwise you'll wind up with drawers full of unused stuff.

Eating fire is a guaranteed method of not only impressing an entire room, but also instantly settling any questions as to whether or not you're a complete and total stone cold BAD ASS. When you can casually whip this trick out in a bar, you're not only going to get your drinks bought for you for the rest of the night, but at least three phone numbers scrawled on the backs of napkins.

In this How To, you'll learn how to snatch a live flame out of the air, pop it in your mouth, and exhale a satisfied plume of smoke. Certificate of Badassery: Achieved.

What You Need

100% Cotton Balls
Lighter or fire source
Patience, steady hands, and a balls-out fearlessness about open flame

Step 1 Gear Up

Go out to your local pharmacy and pick up a bag of 100% Cotton Balls. That 100% Cotton label on the bag is the only thing between a sexy, relatively safe fire trick, and hours of burning agony in the Emergency Room after you've chemically melted a cotton ball to the inside of your mouth. Be completely sure you're working with REAL COTTON.

Step 2 Prep Your Tools

Tear one of the 100% Cotton Balls into smaller pieces. The larger the piece of cotton, the more flame you have to stuff into your mouth. Start with a small piece of cotton, and work your way up a larger one.

Step 3 Get a Flame Source

Light a candle to use as your flame source. Having a steady source of fire to work with makes this trick a lot easier - and most classy bars and restaurants already have candles on the tables, so it's good to practice with one.

Step 4 Palm the Cotton

Take your piece of cotton and palm it. Palming is a way of holding an object so that your audience doesn't know it's there. You can learn more about palming in this video.

Palm a coin for beginners

For this trick, all you need to do is hold the cotton ball on the inside of your palm and keep it there with your thumb.

Step 5 Light It

With the piece of cotton palmed in your hand, casually pass your hand over the candle flame. The cotton ball will ignite as soon as it touches the fire - when it does, transfer it to a grip between your thumb and index finger. If done correctly, it will look like you are plucking a flame from mid-air.

Remember! Fire burns UP. As long as you hold the cotton by its base, and don't hold it long enough for the fire to completely consume the cotton, you will not get burned. Wave the flaming cotton back and forth in front of your audience. The movement will not only distract from your audience from what exactly is lit on fire, but also create a great visual effect.

Step 6 Eat It

Once your audience has been suitable impressed by your ability to control the very element of fire itself, open your mouth wide and put the piece of flaming cotton inside. Immediately close your lips, and press the cotton to the roof of your mouth with your tongue. The fire will go out the instant you deprive it of oxygen (when your mouth closes), but just in case, the saliva on your tongue will be plenty to extinguish it.

Step 7 Breathe Smoke

Keep your mouth closed for a moment after you've consumed the flame, then open it and breathe out. The smoke generated from the cotton will plume out of your mouth. You can also continue to keep your mouth closed, and breathe the smoke out your nose instead.

Congratulations, you are now a dragon.

Step 8 Dispose of the Evidence

What you should have after completing this trick is a room full of astonished new admirers, and a burnt ball of wet cotton in your mouth. Chew the cotton until it's small enough to comfortably keep in your mouth, then discretely spit it out as soon as you get a chance.

Step 9 Bask in the Adoration

Sit back and let people go crazy over you. For best results, act completely casual, like eating fire is something you do all the time. "Oh, that?", you can scoff. "I was just feeling a bit peckish/that candle looked delicious/our appetizers weren't getting here any time soon."

Tips

The first few times you practice eating fire, do it over a non-flammable surface. You'll drop the first six or seven cotton balls in abject terror as soon as your self-preservation instinct kicks in and realizes that you're holding something on FIRE. Keep trying!
Expect to singe the tips of your fingernails a bit before you get the hang of it. Just a side effect of being enough of a bad ass to play with live flame.

Things required:

1. A good pack of cards
2. Patience
3. Basic sleights of hand (Double Lift, Riffle)

Effect of the magic:

The magician displays a normal pack of cards facing down to the spectators, which is then shuffled by any one spectator. The magician then displays the top card of the pack and puts it back on top. He then places the chosen top card somewhere in the middle of the pack. He then makes a small riffle (the sound made by forcing the ends of the cards), and to the surprise of the spectators, the chosen card had returned to the top of the pack.

Performance secret:

At first, hand over the pack of cards to a spectator and instruct him to shuffle the pack. Now take the pack and carefully perform the double lift (a method by which the top two cards of the pack are lifted, but shown to the spectators as one card). In fact, the spectators see the the second card of the pack. Now put the cards back on the pack. Remove only the first card and insert it into the middle portion of the pack, saying that it is their chosen card. The chosen card actually remains at the top of the pack. Now make a riffle and boast, saying that you are going to make the chosen card come back to the top of the pack. Slowly reveal the top card... And see the spectators amused and amazed.

Tips

Learn to perform a good double lift.
Practice the trick over and over again in front of a mirror before performing it to spectators.
Add humor while performing the trick.
Do not let the spectators come too close to you while performing the trick.
