How To Beatbox the Classic Snare Sound

If you've seen my basic sounds tutorial (and if you haven't, you should!) you'd know a rimshot sound instead of a snare. The classic snare, while considerably more tricky, is far more versatile.

Step 1 What's it sound like?

The classic snare is similar to the word "poof" if said without the "oo". So, to start, say "poof", then take away the vowels. You should have a sound similar to a spit, almost as if you were trying to spit tea leaves from the tip of your tongue.

Step 2 Fine-tuning

Once you have the "pf" sound down tighten your lips up to get the nice, crisp snare sound. Alternatively you can use your tongue to get a similar sound, although that method will cause trouble when learning more advanced beatboxing techniques.

Now you can use it in place of a rimshot in your beats for a more realistic sound. It's also possible to hum whilst making this sound, but I'll talk about that in a later tutorial.

Blackbirds are NOT singing in the dead of night. At least, not in Arkansas.

The unexplained deaths of over 100,000 drumfish and 4,000 blackbirds in Arkansas over the New Year's weekend is still baffling the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Was it a lightning storm that killed off thousands of red-winged blackbirds? Or was it a vicious hail storm in the sky? Could it have been the celebratory fireworks exploding in the sky on New Year's Eve? Was it a nearby top-secret government facility accidentally releasing a toxic biochemical weapon that only affects blackbirds? How about a mass suicide? Birds have feelings, too, you know.

It literally could have been anything. But there is no official word yet as to why the blackbirds in Beebe, Arkansas fell from the sky during the New Year celebration.

UPDATE: AP reports that 500 more dead blackbirds fell from the sky, this time 300 miles away from Bebe, in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.

But is the death of the hundreds of thousands of drumfish a mere coincidence? Aside form conspiracy theories, some speculate it even could have been an earthquake releasing toxic gases.

No matter what you believe, the blackbirds are NOT singing in the dead of night. But that's just because they're all dead right now. But there's no better time to stray from the news and play a little music, specifically, the classic Beatles song "Blackbird". How fitting.

Although commonly credited as written by both John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles, McCartney is the one who actually wrote the famous "Blackbird" song in 1968.

In the following video, you'll get a good guitar lesson on playing "Blackbird", broken down into six steps (written below the video).

Pluck the A-string and B-string at the same time.
Sweep your index finger down.
Sweep your index finger back towards you.
Pluck the A-string (bass note) with your thumb.
Pluck the open G-string with the tip of your pointer finger.
Sweep your index finger down, away from you.

This video teaches the bare basic sounds for beatboxing and gives you some simple beats to start practicing with.

Here's how you make the sounds:

Step 1 Kick Drum

Make a "buh" sound. It's like saying "boo" without the "oo". Build up pressure behind your lips to make it louder.

Step 2 Hi-hat

Make a simple "t" sound for the closed hi-hat. Add a hiss afterward for the open hi-hat.

Step 3 Rimshot

Make a "kuh" sound using the back of your tongue. If you are having trouble, push the back of your tongue against the top of your mouth and force air from your throat over it. You should get a kind of "strangling" sound. Make this sound shorter and you'll have the rimshot perfectly.

"The Christmas Song" is the Christmas song of all songs, but many know this holiday favorite under a different name— "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire". It may not be as old as other Christmastime favorites, like "Jingle Bells" or "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", but thanks to Mel Tormé and Bob Wells, it's now a quintessential Xmas song, even for ukulele players.

In the video below, Ukulele Mike gives you the perfect instructions for playing "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" on the uke. Now, the ukulele doesn't sound like a traditional Christmas instrument, but it almost sounds more festive than others, making it the perfect instrument of choice for the holidays.

Choosing the right axe for you

There are many choices and factors when it comes to buying a new electric guitar. Price, style, quality and comfort are major players.

Many new guitarists start off with a box set, one that includes a guitar, amp and cable. These are good for the beginner, but what if you are crossing over from an acoustic guitar or another instrument and already know a few things about the guitar? It’s worth shopping around to find out what you want and what you can afford.

Let’s take a look at a few things that you should consider before handing over your money:

Step 1 Pick your style

It might be a little vain, but to some people a warlock style guitar just is not as cool as a ‘telecaster.’ It really does matter what body shape the guitar has. For someone who loves country guitar, having a made-for-metal axe slung over your shoulder is just embarrassing. So it’s important to think about what style of music you play, and what style you think is cool.

Let's look at the most common body shapes:

Step 2 Who plays it?

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin plays a Les Paul in all of the pictures and videos of him that I have seen. So guess what? I bought a Les Paul. It’s a Classic Rock guitar, and a classic.

Check out your favorite artists and find out what they use. Use that as a starting point for choosing the right axe for you.

Step 3 Your budget

If you are just starting out playing music, buying one of those starter kits that I mentioned earlier can be a great choice for you. If you decide later that the guitar is not for you, then at least you did not drop a huge chunk of change finding that out.

For those guitarists who know that they will continue on playing far into the future, it might be wise to save up and get the guitar that you really want.

Step 4 Brands, tone and quality

The two major players on the market are Fender and Gibson. They both are USA born brands, and they both have lines of guitars that are made outside of the USA, and are more affordable.

Also, Fender and Gibson have a separate economy line of guitars called Squier and Epiphone. They make the same style guitars but at lower prices. Try them out against their big brothers to get an idea of the tone and quality of each one. Normally Squier and Epiphone are geared towards beginners, but I have seen experienced guitarists play them too.

Whether or not you should buy the USA made guitar, or the one from Mexico or China really depends on different factors. Try them all out at your local store; even some of the ones not made in the US are really good. Check out if you like how it sounds through your amp. Some of the foreign guitars use USA made parts and it can be hard to tell a difference between the more expensive model and the one half the price.

I have found that the craftsmanship is what usually takes a dive in the lower line models. The guitar might be rougher around the edges in the $300 foreign made model. The tuning pots, tuners and pickups might be of a lower quality. For the tech minded guitarist, those are the types of things you can change out and customize.

Step 5 Try it before you buy it

Really what it all comes down to is going to a music store that has a decent collection of guitars and trying out as many of them as you can. This is the best way to get an idea of what is quality and what is not.

Step 6 Investigate

Look online and in other stores for deals. There are some great sites online in which the prices can’t be beat. It’s also great to support your local music store.

Guitar Essentials

My friends and I would secretly scribble tab in the darkly lit practice rooms in our university even though we were educated musicians. So, being able to read tablature, or tab, is essential for beginning guitarists.

Tab is a curious way to write down music for guitar or bass players, that involves lines and numbers. For serious musicians it’s kind of a sinful way to annotate but many of us still do it anyway. Putting the guilt aside, tab is great because with it you can quickly and universally note and share your music with others.

Why is it important? Well, if you are searching the Internet for instructions on how to play “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” or “Stairway to Heaven,” you will probably encounter two ways to learn it - video and tab. Video is great, but if you want to be able to take something with you to your band's rehearsal or to a gig, you will need something printable.

Keep in mind that if you pull your tab off of the Internet that it is usually user created and not always 100% correct. Check them out and make your own corrections. Other great sources of tab are offered in guitar magazines like Guitar World, and in books of sheet music. Tabs found in commercially available sources are usually free of errors.

Lets get started:

Step 1 The lines

Tab for guitar is laid out with six lines. Each line represents a string on the guitar. Look at this example:

The letters on the left side indicate the name of each corresponding string. For example, the last line represents the low ‘E’ string on your guitar, the ‘A’ is the next string, which is higher in pitch than the low ‘E’, and so on.

Step 2 The numbers

The numbers written on the lines represent which fret is fretted on that line. Refer to the example:

Here there are two lines that have numbers on them. The ‘0’ on the low ‘E’ means that no fret is fretted, but the string is played.

The ‘2’ on the ‘A’ string means that you place your finger on the second fret, on the ‘A’ string.

Step 3 Chords and single notes

Looking again at the above example, we see that there are two notes that are aligned in a column. This means that these two notes are played together simultaneously, as a chord. What if the notes are not aligned? Like in this example:

Simple. Play the note that comes first, the ‘0’ on the low ‘E’ string, then the other note, the ‘2’ on the ‘A’ string.

Step 4 The high notes

Notes can be placed anywhere on the fretboard. If you see double digits simply count it out and put your finger in the indicated place.

Many tabbers take liberties when trying to express things like hammer-ons, pull-offs, string bends, vibrato and all of the other tricks that guitarists are capable of. Often there will be a legend somewhere in the tab that will tell you what symbol they use and what it means. Let's look at an example:

So here we have an illustration of hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and vibrato. Here the ‘h’ represents a hammer-on from the 5th fret on the ‘B’ string to the 7th fret on the ‘B’ string. Then there is a pull-off from the very same 7th fret back to the 5th. Cool?

Next comes a note on the high ‘e’ string, but its loaded. Play once the 8th fret on the high ‘e’ string, then bend that note up (^), make it squeal, then add on thick some juicy vibrato (~).

Tips

Be aware that there are other symbols out there, but like I said, refer to the tab’s author to find out what they mean. Or listen to the music and decide for yourself.

A First Timer's Guide

When some new guitarists break their first string they stash it in the closet and forget about it. Me, I put the sweaty axe back in its case and asked my parents to take me to the local music store. After a morning full of senseless racket emanating from my bedroom, my mom welcomed the drive.

A new guitarist probably has not yet noticed the difference in sound quality between a new string and the old gritty ones still gasping on to the tuning pegs. As an experienced guitarist, I cannot bear to have a mixture of old and new on my guitar, but I remember the first couple of years where I would go to the music store and buy one new “e” string for $1. When I got home after my big purchase I would string it up and then five minutes would pass by and the “b” string would pop off. I learned the hard way that when one string breaks (unless you just put it on), they all are about to go. Which is just as well because a complete set of fresh strings will bring back a nice tone to your guitar.

The process of changing guitar strings is not hard, but the first couple of times you do it you’re bound to make a few mistakes. So let’s take a look at my method to help you get started off right:

Step 1 Lay it down

First, lay your guitar on a surface, like a bed, your lap or a table. You can use a cloth or towel to put under the guitar, so that it does not get scratched. If the headstock of your guitar is built at an angle, make sure that it is not resting on the surface with the body of the guitar.

Step 2 Unwind

Now, start unwinding the sixth string using its tuning peg. Notice when the string becomes loose enough to remove it from the peg and carefully pull it out.

Warnings

Do not remove all of the strings at once. Doing this releases a lot of tension on the neck of the guitar and can cause serious damage.

Step 3 Change the thing

Next, simply remove the string from the bridge. Open and unwind the new sixth string. Thread the string through the hole in the bridge. Pull it until the ball connects firmly with the bridge. Now, thread the string through the inside of the tuning peg.

Tips

Leave enough slack so that you can wind it a few times around the peg.

Step 4 Wind 'er up

Check to make sure that the string rests in place on its saddle and on the nut. Holding the string in place with one hand, its time to wind the string with the other. Using your fingers or a string winder, turn the tuning peg counter-clockwise. Turn the string until it becomes tense enough that you no longer need to hold it in place.

Step 5 Repeat, stretch and tune

Now, repeat these steps on the rest of the strings. After you have finished changing all six strings, tune the guitar. Gently stretch the strings by pulling up on each one individually and then tune it again.

Step 6 Cut the excess

Now cut off the excess string and enjoy.
