Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons is expecting the Tigers to arrive at the party from the very first match of the ICC World T20 against India at Trent Bridge tomorrow (Saturday).

“I think everyone knows that we are dangerous at any time. We have some potential match-winners and one of them is sitting here (Mohammad Ashraful), at any form of the game but our consistency has not been there. We don’t want to lose this game, we want to win it but we are the underdogs and we are very relaxed about the game. We want to put our best foot forward and put them under some pressure,” said Siddons while speaking to the media at Trent Bridge today.

The Bangladesh side had a three-hour training session at Lady Bay just across the road from Trent Bridge in the morning after which Siddons and skipper Ashraful attended the media session at Trent Bridge. The captain then headed for London to attend the opening ceremony of the World T20.

Siddons said that expectations back home would spur the side on and the team’s total focus was on the India match because winning it would mean a place in the Super Eight.

“We have 140-150 million people back home who wish us well and want us to do well. Every time we lose they feel pain and every time we win they are happy. The public mean a lot to us and we want to impress them. We’ll have a crack at India and we don’t want to wait for the next game against Ireland to qualify for the Super Eights. We also know that we have to bat, bowl and field well to do that.”

“If we lose tomorrow then we have just one more chance. As you have said we have nothing to lose against India and in the second game Ireland have got nothing to lose against us. We don’t want to think about that game. We are thinking about the India game like you know win the toss, make some runs and put them under pressure and hopefully come out on top. We are going into the match to win it. If we do that then the Ireland match will be like a bonus practice match for us.”

The coach also felt that despite the relative youth of the side it was still an experienced unit and India would not want to wait and find out about the players.

“Most of the boys have been around for around 12-15 months now so inexperience is not an excuse for them. The fact that we have not played India that often might raise the question of surprises but there are visions and footages available and I’m sure they’ll (India) do their homework. Our boys are ready to play and it is time for them to step up.”

Siddons said the team was shaping up well and no longer happy with one-off wins.

“I have always said that I don’t want us to have that reputation because I will call it a fluke if we win one game out of 40-50. I don’t think this team is about flukes any more. They have done the work. We have really good depth in batting and bowling now. Two of our main bowlers are in our top six in the batting line up. That’s a bonus for us and not too many sides can say that. I think we have moved on from that fluky win and we have a chance of pushing anyone. We showed that in the practice matches. Against Australia we didn’t quite bowl that well because we were caught on the hop but then we batted really well and against Sri Lanka we played well also. We have moved on but the other teams are rated higher than us and are probably better teams on their day at the moment and are more consistent than us but if they slip up then we are happy to jump all over them.”

Ashraful said he the practice games have given the players confidence and the spirit was up.

“We ran top sides like New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka very close in the warm-ups and if we hadn’t made small mistakes here and there then we would have won all three. The boys are really pumped up for tomorrow’s game. Everyone is fit and raring to go.”

The skipper was also banking on his deputy Masrafe Mortaza to put up a special show which would inspire the team.

“Masrafe has always done well against India and has won us matches against them .He has been our best player against India both with the bat and ball. Our team has always found that something extra while facing India.”

Ashraful said the spirit in the side reminded him of the mood prior to the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies when the Tigers knocked India out of the competition.

“I remember that each and everyone in the team believed that we could beat them and we did. I could feel that energy before the match and even when we were warming up at Port of Spain. We will give it our best shot tomorrow knowing that in this form of the game any side can beat the other.”

The Group A match starts at 6pm local time (11pm Bangladesh Standard Time). Bangladesh’s second and last group game is against Ireland at the same venue on June 8. That match will commence at 1:30pm local time (6:30pm Bangladesh Standard Time).

The Tigers have decided to wait till the team meeting tomorrow morning to finalise the XI against India

Skype has been pushing to make its service work on the most popular advanced phones with an aim to expending its more than 400 million users who were mostly lured by the promise of cheap and sometimes free calls made using its computer application. Skype Chief Operating Officer Scott Durchslag said he has high hopes for the application's success on Apple Inc's popular iPhone as he expects Skype's most feature-rich mobile offering to appeal to new and existing customers. "The No. 1 request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone. There's a pent-up demand," Durchslag said in an interview before the CTIA annual mobile showcase in Las Vegas, where Skype plans to launch the service on Tuesday. In May it will launch Skype for Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices, which popularized mobile email. It has already announced Skype for Nokia phones and for phones based on Android, Google Inc's mobile system, and Windows Mobile, from Microsoft Corp. CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood said the new applications give Skype a chance to boost its mobile phone position, which has been weaker than that of social sites such as Facebook, Twitter or News Corp's MySpace. One of Skype's unusual iPhone features is the fact that it allows subscribers use to the phone numbers in their existing iPhone address book so they do not need duplicate lists. "Whether you're Twitter, MySpace or Facebook you want to be embedded in the address book," said Wood. "This puts Skype firmly into the game." Skype's iPhone application will be free to download and will allow free calls between Skype users. As with Skype on the desktop, fees will be charged for calls to traditional phones. The service will also work on later versions of Apple's latest iPod Touch device, which has Wi-Fi links but no cellular connection. The iPod Touch launched September 2008 has a microphone, unlike the first iPod Touch launched in 2007. While Skype video is very popular with desktop customers, Durchslag said that the company is still considering whether it will offer video for the iPhone or other phones. "We're considering video carefully but we have a really high bar on the quality," and how the user interaction will work with other applications on iPhone, he said. "If we do it we will have to do it incredibly well." CCS's Wood said that if Skype can replicate the popularity of its desktop video feature on the cellphone it would help a mobile category that has been slow to take off, as well as boost its own status in cellphones. "I'm firmly convinced that if Skype could find a way to bridge all those cellphone cameras and laptop cameras it might kick start a video telephony opportunity," he said. While mobile Skype has has been available for some time in other countries such as the United Kingdom, it has been slow to catch on in the United States partly due to carrier concern that it would cannibalize their phone call revenue. In the United States for example, AT&T Inc has had a monopoly on calls made from iPhones, as it is the exclusive carrier here. But Wood said that Skype has actually shown that it can boost consumer spending on cellphones as it encourages use of the phones for other services such as data. For example he said that its success on networks such as 3 UK, owned by Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, suggests that carrier fears have been unfounded. "The only area where I think there are some question mark is that it could erode roaming revenues," he said, noting that some consumers particularly in Europe hesitate to use their phones while outside of their carrier territory because of notoriously high roaming fees. "The carriers will be suspicious of this service but what we've learned from other markets is that (Skype) did not have the detrimental effect feared," he said.

Move to set up 1000 MW power plant within decade

BD receive offers from Russia, China, Korea for nuclear power project

The government is aggressively moving with the nuclear power plant project targeting to set up at least a 1000 MW plant in the country within a decade. Normally, it needs 8-9 years to set up a 600-1000 MW power plant in any country, as it requires fulfilling many conditions. According to official sources(The Bangladesh Today)

right now the government has three initial proposals from three countries-Russia, China and South Korea. But the Russian proposal tops the list, as the nuclear-rich country has been very keen to move ahead with the Bangladesh project under a state-to-state bilateral agreement.

As part of the move, the Russian Ambassador in Dhaka recently met with State Minister for Science and ICT Yeafesh Osman to discuss the project related issues.

As follow-up of the envoy's move, a Russian technical expert team is arriving in the country on March 29 (Sunday) and will stay here three days to discuss with the concerned authorities the proposed power plant issues.

It is believed that after the visit of the Russian technical team, a full-fledged proposal will come from the nuclear nation. Science and ICT Ministry officials hinted that Bangladesh might have to move for an unsolicited offer-based project to implement the nuclear power plant project. In that case, the present public procurement regulation (PPR) may need certain changes.

But the main problem to deal with the project will be mobilizing fund in the present perspective of global financial economic meltdown. Because, a 1000 MW nuclear power plant will need a US$ 1.2-1.5 billion investment.

The move for installing a nuclear power plant was originally initiated during the previous BNP regime. Later, the caretaker government had expedited the process and obtained a clearance certificate from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to go ahead with a nuclear power plant project.

The caretaker government also launched a site preparation project at Rooppur with technical and financial support of the IAEA to make the site suitable for a power plant. The IAEA provided US$ 366,000 for the project. Rooppur is a very old site, which was first undertaken by the then East Pakistan government for the same purpose.

"The site preparatory project is going on in full swing and by the end of the year it would be completed," said a top official of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), which has been implementing the project.

He also mentioned that an IAEA technical team also visited the site in November last to have a physical inspection before giving its necessary nod to Bangladesh.

"Simultaneously, a safeguard document and a model agreement document are now at the final stage of preparation. After completion, we've to place it to the IAEA," the BAEC official said.

Science and ICT Ministry officials said that the nuclear power plant operation is a very sensitive work and it needs highly skilled manpower.

But Bangladesh does not have such manpower available at present. So, from now on a strong move should be made to develop skilled manpower to run a future project, a senior official at the Science and ICT Ministry said.

He also mentioned that the government had approached the IAEA to provide technical support to create such trained and skilled manpower.

According to another top official of BAEC, at present world's 23 percent electricity comes from nuclear plants.

Neighboring India is leading in nuclear power generation in the South Asian region as it has 17 nuclear power plants while another five is under construction. Russia generates 17 percent of its total electricity from nuclear plants while USA generates 20 percent. France leads in nuclear power generation among the European nations.

The innovative Bangladeshi entrepreneurs and the executives behind the successful brands, who shared their experiences with New Age, point out the reliability and sustainability of brands and express their firm confidence that the brands can boost the country image.

Brand experts echo them as they list confidence, professionalism, strategic efforts of the industry and say the government can turn Bangladesh a high-value brand exporting country.

‘Establishment and operation of brands require long-time and rigorous process but once these are done, business gets sustainability,’ said Niaz Rahim, managing director of Rahimafrooz Group.

Battery manufacturing and marketing is the major source of income of the Tk 1,400-crore plus Rahimafrooz Group. Last year it exported nearly half of its productions or 3 lakh automotive batteries to more than 25 countries.

‘After putting years of efforts on brand development, we are now getting benefits from foreign markets,’ Niaz said adding that his company could not meet even one-thirds of ready demands from overseas markets.

To feed overseas markets, Rahimafrooz’s new plant at Ishwardi EPZ will go into operation by June. This will be the south Asia’s largest export-oriented battery manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of one million units at the first phase.

‘Confidence is the first thing that is required to building a brand, then determinations and investments,’ said Niaz, who, however, reminds, ‘If quality of the products is not assured persistently the brand will eventually die.’

Sabbir Hasan Nasir, the CEO of Otobi, says consistency in quality have helped them to become the leader in local market and to get the choosy buyers at foreign markets.

With a 35 per cent annual growth, Otobi enjoys more than half of the country’s Tk 500-crore market of brand furniture. Nasir says difference in designs and quality products at affordable and competitive prices keep them ahead of others.

Nasir shares a pleasing experience in opening of an Otobi outlets in Kolkata in mid-2008. ‘The western expatriates started comparing Otobi’s designs and finishing with European products and surprised how Otobi could offer so competitive prices,’ said Nasir, ‘Huge coverage in Indian media then allured choosy Kolkata shoppers to our shop.’

Recently Otobi has established a sophisticated furniture making plant at Ashulia near Dhaka that also uses solar energy as its commitment to environment.

‘Successful branding requires “We” approach,’ said Nasir.‘ For banding success, companies need to work like families.

‘Without having sustainable brands, sales at any business may grow for a time being but hard to sustain,’ said Kamruzzaman Kamal, the executive director of the Agriculture Marketing Company Limited-AMCL.

Juice, pickles, cookies and confectionaries in AMCL’s brand name Pran are now being shipped to more than 50 countries and sold in villages in north-east India to cities in many Middle Eastern and western countries.

Pran’s last year’s exports amounted at around $15 million which was more than half of Bangladesh’s total processed food export earning. The company employs 60 plus Bangladeshis abroad to operate its overseas business. Also it has a plan to set up a plant in India.

‘Pran’s plants in Africa or middle-east are not impossible projects in the future,’ Kamal said.

Kazi Anis Ahmed, CEO of the organic tea brand Kazi and Kazi, says products from Bangladesh have potentials to be premium brands, but building brands requires strategic and professional efforts.

After being approved by all standardisation tests, Kazi and Kazi tea was showcased at Harrods in London as a test case and received overwhelming response from consumers.

By 2008 Kazi and Kazi developed its large capacity to process and market premium segment tea at significant volumes and now shipped regularly to the USA, Japan and Korea.

‘Sri Lanka exports 10 times more tea than Bangladesh but earns 100 times more. It happens not for mere quality, but for branding mainly,’ says Anis.

Citing that India has brand tea produced in her different regions, Anis says tea produced in Sylhet and other regions should have brands.

Anis said his brand sells at $4 to $9 per kilogram in export markets while on average export price of Bangladeshi bulk tea is only $1.65.

‘Within a couple of years we will export more than 50 per cent of our garden outputs or one million kilograms of tea as brand item,’ Anis told New Age.

Shariful Islam, editor of the Bangladesh Brand Forum, traces that realisations on the prospects of branding were growing among local companies.

‘You think how many Indian brands were there in global markets a decade ago and how many are there now,’ says Sharif as he disagrees that Bangladeshis have made late in entering global markets with their own brands.’ The age of branding by Bangladeshi exporters has begun and it will go on.’

Professor Syed Farhat Anwar of the Institute of Business Administration in the University of Dhaka predicts that mission of branding would soon be started in apparel export sector as well.

‘All that needs here are seriousness and professionalism, and skills of peoples in the companies should be enhanced much so they can understand the demands and the behaviours of overseas markets,’ the brand expert suggests.

He stresses that the government and industry should work together for the development of the brands at global markets.

Abdur Razzak has received clearance from the ICC

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has received clearance from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to bowl in international cricket. Razzak had been suspended by the ICC in November 2008 for an Illegal Bowling Action. He appeared for a reassessment of his action at the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) in Canberra on 23 February and has been subsequently cleared. The ICC has informed the BCB that Razzak’s bowling technique has changed to the extent that both his stock delivery and faster ball are now within the ICC tolerance level of 15° and his action was now legal. As a result the previous suspension has been lifted and Razzak is once again permitted to bowl in international cricket.

Find way to build a better battery

US engineers have found a way to make lithium batteries that are smaller, lighter, longer lasting and capable of recharging in seconds.
The researchers believe the quick-charging batteries could open up new applications, including better batteries for electric cars. And because they use older materials in a new way, the batteries could be available for sale in two to three years, a team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported on Wednesday in the journal Nature. Current rechargeable lithium batteries can store large amounts of energy, making them long-running. But they are stingy about releasing their power, making them discharge energy slowly and require hours to recharge. Scientists traditionally have blamed slow-moving lithium ions -- which carry charge across the battery -- for this sluggishness. However, about five years ago, Gerbrand Ceder and a team at MIT discovered that lithium ions in traditional lithium iron phosphate battery material actually move quite quickly. "It turned out there were other limitations," Ceder said in a telephone interview. Ceder and colleagues discovered that lithium ions travel through tunnels accessed from the surface of the material. If a lithium ion at the surface is directly in front of a tunnel entrance, it can quickly deliver a charge. But if the ion is not at the entrance, it cannot easily move there, making it less efficient at delivering a charge. Ceder and colleagues remedied this by revamping the battery recipe.
"We changed the composition of the base material and we changed the way it is made -- the heat treatment," Ceder said. This created many smooth tunnels in the material that allow the ions to slip in and out easily. "The trick was knowing what to change," he said. Using their new processing technique, the team made a small battery that could be fully charged in 10 to 20 seconds. Ceder thinks the material could lead to smaller, lighter batteries because less material is needed for the same result. And because they simply tinkered with a material already commonly used for batteries, it could be easily adapted for commercial use. "If manufacturers decide they want to go down this road, they could do this in a few years," Ceder said. One glitch, Ceder said, would be handling the extra surge of power. "All of the wiring has to get beefed up," he said.
