Dubai Museum

Al-Fahidi Fort, built in 1800, is home to the Dubai Museum, and is thought to be Dubai's oldest building.
In the past the fort was used to defend the town from warlike neighbouring tribes. It has also served, at various times throughout history as the seat of government, the ruler's residence, a store for ammunition, and a jail.

The walls of the fort are built from coral and shell rubble from the sea, and are cemented together with lime. Wooden poles called handel support the upper floor, and the ceiling is made of palm fronds, mud and plaster. A massive, iron-studded door stands at the entrance, and its battle-scarred walls and towers bear witness to the conflicts of the past.

When the Museum was opened by the ruler of Dubai in 1971, its main aim was to furnish a record of the Emirate's traditional life, much of which is fast disappearing. Local antiquities have been collected and stored, along with artifacts from many African and Asian countries, trading partners with the Emirate, throughout its long commercial history.

At the Museum's entrance, the visitor can browse through a collection of old maps of the Gulf and the Emirates, together with aerial photographs showing Dubai's considerable urban expansion between 1960 and 1980.

Inside, a treasure trove awaits. A large section is devoted to musical instruments, with displays of drums, flutes, lyres, bagpipes made of goatskin and other locally-made instruments used in performances on festive occasions.

On a less peaceful note, displays of deadly weaponry are enough to curdle the blood. The curved daggers known as hanjars are much in evidence, and the display also includes swords, spears, bows and arrows, shields made of sharkskin, pistols and axes.

A model of a wind-tower room is an interesting feature of the architecture section, with diagrams and photographs showing different types of wind-towers from the older areas of Dubai city.
Narish Khyma, situated close to the Museum, is a typical Arab summer-house, with an interesting collection of local boats. These include a replica of the famous abra -- the ferry boats used for transporting passengers across Dubai's river creek.

Evening Desert Safari (Dune Dinner)This off-road arabian adventure takes you from the bustle of Dubai city to the desert of golden sand dunes. You will travel to the desert from your pick-up point in a luxury 4WD (Toyota Land Cruiser) and reach there in around 45 minutes. Next, the Arabian roller coaster ride known as dune bashing (desert driving) will begin, where you will shriek and laugh with excitement as the car goes up and down the dunes.

You can also get more dressed for the occasion by dressing in traditional Bedouin male or female garments, and also have Henna (temporary tatoo) decorate your hands, legs and feet and smoke flavored sheesha (hubbly-bubbly/water pipe). Before we head back to Dubai, we will be entertained by the dancing of a belly dancer to traditional Arabic music, and you are welcome to join along.

As the sun descends into the horizon, we stop to allow you to take sunset photographs, while standing on top of the fading desert dunes. We now head to the campsite where a convoy of camels awaits your arrival for short camel rides. After returning, you can purchase some souvenirs before relaxing on a majlis (low cushions) in traditional Bedouin tents. Enjoy an Arabian BBQ (barbeque/barbecue) buffet dinner beside a blazing bonfire with traditional cups of coffee and dates, underneath the pitch-black night sky.

Sheikh Hamdan opens Dhs200 million Zabeel Park

Zabeel Park, a new oasis in the heart of the city on Shaikh Zayed Road, was officially opened on Tuesday. "We are very pleased to open the sixth public park, which not only adds to the beauty of the growing city, but also provides recreational and edutainment facilities to residents," Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, told reporters after inauguration of the park. He hailed the partnership of public and private sectors to build this park. "I am happy to see investment by private companies in edutainment and recreational projects in this park," he said. It is the first technology-based recreational theme park in the Gulf. While the municipality has spent Dh200 million to develop the park, private investors have so far invested Dh300 million in different projects, including Stargate Family Edutainment Centre and a sports club.

The park, located on three separate plots to the north east of the Dubai World Trade Centre and bounded by Trade Centre Road, Al Quta'eyat Road and Zaa'beel Road, is aimed at boosting domestic and international tourism in Dubai and provide recreational facilities to residents. Qasim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said: "The park has something to offer each visitor." The park has seven gates and the entry fee will be Dh5 per person. It has parking spaces for 2,300 cars. It will be open from 8am to 11pm during week days and from 8am to midnight during public holidays. With an overall area of 47.5 hectares, the park incorporates a wide range of facilities such as a boating lake, lakeside restaurant, a sports centre, an exhibition gallery, an activity area including mini golf, adventure play, informal recreation areas, barbeque facilities, shaded seating, play areas and refreshment kiosks. The main attraction of the park is a mega bowl, which will be used for organising multi-purpose activities. The other important features of the park include a synthetic jogging track of 4.3 kilometres. Park C, the smallest part of Zabeel Park, is dedicated to holding open-air concerts with a huge stage. Hard and soft ground seating in the arena can accommodate more than 2,000 people. It will be a new venue for grand musical and cultural open-air concerts. One of the planned future projects in the park is a 70-metre high tower with a revolving restaurant.

At Qanat Al Qasba in Sharjah

The 'Eye of the Emirates' is part of Qanat Al Qasba, Sharjah's ambitious entertainment and cultural hub which was inaugurated in mid-April, commissioned by the Qasba Development Authority. Standing proudly on Sharjah's Qasba canal, the 'Eye of the Emirates' is expected to become a key attraction at Qanat Al Qasba which was conceived by reputed regional leisure consultants Thomas Klein International, who are confident that the 'Eye of the Emirates' will prove a popular springboard to the area's extensive cultural and entertainment attractions.
The wheel was built in the Netherlands according to the latest technology and highest safety standards. It features 42 fully air-conditioned passenger cabins, or gondolas, attached to its external rim, with each gondola accommodating eight people at a time. Passengers can enjoy a panoramic view of 25-30 miles, including breathtaking aerial views of Sharjah and Dubai. The capsules are aerodynamically shaped for least wind resistance and tuned mass dampers are attached to the outer rim to prevent the wheel from vibrating at its natural frequency. The large glass windows that surround passengers ensure that the views are magnificent and, because the capsules are secured to the outer rim, the views are unobstructed.
Sheikha Bodour pointed out that the "Eye of the Emirates" will provide a glimpse of the rich line-up of leisure, cultural and entertainment activities that are being offered as part of the Qanat Al Qasba attractions. "Both during the day and at night, the Eye will bring the Al Qasba area to life and will be a matter of civic pride for Sharjah residents, who can now appreciate their city even more and show it off to the rest of the world," she added. WaterFront Mall is one of Dubai Festival CityLand's newest Attraction. It was all our first-time here. As of this writing, the Mall is still partly-opened. WFM reunited me with my ever-favourite Ikea HomeStore of Sweden. (put the link) . I got the lost with the maze..Bayaw mel (who took our group photo) dislike staying longer since there were available kiddie attraction.

Madinat SoukNewly opened at the Madinat Jumeirah Resort, this mall boasts around seventy shops, and has been designed to resemble a traditional street market or Souk. The outlets are high-end designer shops, and the jewellery is out of this world. It may not be one of the cheapest places to shop in Dubai, but it is certainly one of the best.

1997. It was the year when I first time I set foot in Dubai, and, the soil where Hamarain Center now gently stood was then an open field, I mean desert. I used to live behind it with my eldest sis. HC is connected with the now getting more grandeur JW Marriot Hotel. Upstairs are big Corporate Offices while small foodcourt and coffee shops occupies the lower level

It has fountains and cascading plants, and meant for very exclusive shopping.

It is probably the best place outside the souks to pick up local handicrafts and antiques. DSF has given life to the seemingly elegant, yet boring mall. But that was only during Summer.. The rest of the year is creepy.

Sharjah City CenterSharjah city center is a resident’s loved shopping center its main attraction being Carrefour-the hyper market. So expect here a lot of (forgive my word) uncivilized UZI's, annoying nationalities who came with dirty slipper and garments and spent their times and noise. watch football..

it also offers an array of other shops offering just about everything, from electronics appliances to bed linen, accessories, make up and a lot more.

SJCC is a crowded Mall in our neighborhood. We never really fail coming here in a month.

My fave store inside: Daiso of Japan (Dhs 5 for all items), Splash fashion and RR sportywear (but only during seasonal sales)..and Magic Planet for my nephew Romrom.

Wafi Mall is one of the largest and most impressive places in Dubai to go shopping, the mall has a great reputation for value, especially on designer goods, which are around half the price you would pay in the UK.

Wafi is famous for Egyptian theming. You can see here a lot of related architecture. The Mall owner Sheikh Mana Kalifa Maktoum designed it that way as his form of tribute.
