Why does Galactus arrive to Earth? If you want to know it you must read The Silver Surfer (Parable). Published by Marvel in December 1988 (first part), and January 1989 (second part), the script was written by Stan Lee and the drawings were created by Moebius. This miniseries won the Eisner Award for best limited/finite series in 1989.

¿Por qué llega Galactus a la Tierra? Si deseas saberlo, debes leer The Silver Surfer. Publicado por Marvel en diciembre de 1988 (primera parte) y Enero de 1989 (segunda parte), el guión fue escrito por Stan Lee y los dibujos fueron creados por Moebius. Estas miniseries ganaron el Premio Eisner por la mejor serie limitada/finita en 1989.

The story had little impact in the U.S. Maybe it didn´t help the open criticism to an ambitious broadcast preacher called Colton in a country where the freedom of religion is a constitutionally protected right. Colton calls himself a prophet, an ironic appointment to someone that is even unable to predict the immediate future.

La historia tuvo poco impacto en Estados Unidos. Tal vez no ayudó la abierta crítica hacia un ambicioso tele-predicador llamado Colton en un país donde la libertad de culto es un derecho constitucional. Colton se autonombra profeta, algo irónico teniendo en cuenta que ni siquiera es capaz de predecir un próximo futuro.

The story opens showing a shooting star crossing the sky of an American city. This city somehow reminded me Chicago, maybe due my unforgettable memories of the skyline that I saw from the Hancock Tower, long time before the 360 Chicago Observation Deck was opened. I still remember how the skyscrapers crowded along the Chicago's Magnificient Mile as in River North. The Gold Coast (north), the New East Side (south), and River West (West, naturally), had the prototype density of the residential neighborhoods located on the ourskirts of the American cities. Therefore, the contrast between heights and lights was architecturally interesting, beautiful I would say, especially watching Chicago at the very last hour of the afternoon.

La historia abre, en hoja completa, con una estrella fugaz atravesando el cielo de una gran ciudad estadounidense.
La ciudad me recordaba en cierta forma Chicago, tal vez por lo que pude divisar del skyline desde la Torre Hancock, mucho antes de la inauguración del llamado 360 Chicago Observation Deck. Recuerdo cómo los rascacielos se agolpaban a lo largo de la Avenida Norte de Michigan (Milla de Oro) así como en River North. El norte (Gold Coast), sur (New East Side) y oeste (River West) de la ciudad, tenían la densidad típica de los distritos residenciales a las afueras de las ciudades americanas. En concecuencia, el contraste de alturas y luces era arquitectónicamente interesante, hermoso diría, especialmente contemplando Chicago a última hora de la tarde.

The scientists thought initially that the Earth is going to be impacted by a meteor, but later they discover the threaten: it is an interestellar ship built by giants. The population reacts with fear upon hearing the news, and disorders start and follow successively.
As it is known, the United States has had several violent experiences initiated with protests of peace or taking advantage of certain conditions. May I remind the protest at the Kent State University in 1970 where the students, calling for the end of the Vietnam War, ended up been shot by the Ohio National Guard. New York City blackout of 1977 is another sad example of how a part of the American society reacts under anomalous conditions. Therefore, the proposal of the story is credible.
Meanwhile, the space ship lands, and Galactus introduces himself to the inhabitants of Earth.

Los científicos pensaban inicialmente que la Tierra va a ser impactada por un meteorito, pero más tarde descubren la amenaza: amenaza: es una nave interestelar construida por gigantes. La población reacciona con miedo al oír las noticias, y los desórdenes comienzan y continúan sucesivamente.
Como bien se sabe, Estados Unidos ha tenido diversas experiencias violentas iniciadas con manifestaciones por la paz o aprovechando una circunstancia determinada. Me permito recordar la manifestación de la Universidad Estatal de Kent, en 1970, donde los estudiantes pedían el término de la Guerra de Vietnam, para finalizar siendo tiroteos por la Guardia Nacional de Ohio. El apagón de Nueva York en 1977 es otro triste ejemplo de cómo una parte de la sociedad norteamericana reacciona ante unas condiciones anómalas. Por tanto la propuesta de la historia es verosímil.

Entretanto la nave aterriza, y Galactus se presenta ante los habitantes de la Tierra.

Galactus, the supervillain, explains that he comes to impose his kingdom, and to bring peace on Earth. Any offender will suffer his anger. That is to say, I impose peace with my violence if needed. The law of the strong. Immediately a new religion starts to support the protection of the strong (was it a medieval principle?) Colton, the tele-preacher of little success chooses to join the invader. Therefore, he is the villain. His sister Elyna, as the formal heroe, warns Colton about Galactus, but his brother performance that same night a show explaining that 'where there is no evil, there is no sin', so the new principle is 'do what you want, take what what you wish'. It is a total anarchy. Colton states that Galactus is Law and Colton himself his prophet.

Galactus, el supervillano, viene a imponer su reino, y a traer la paz en la Tierra. Cualquier infractor, sufrirá su ira. Es decir, impongo la paz pero impongo mi violencia. La ley del fuerte. Y de inmediato, comienza una nueva religión que se apoya precisamente, no en el amparo espiritual, sino en la protección del fuerte (esto, ¿no era un principio medieval?). En este caso, el débil decide unir ambos conceptos. Colton, tele-predicador de poco éxito, desea aprovechar la ocasión. Por lo tanto, Colton encarna el villano. Su hermana Elyna, héroe formal, advierte a Colton que Galactus carece de emoción alguna, pero esa misma noche, Colton dice en su programa que 'donde no hay mal, no hay pecado', y que por tanto, el nuevo principio es 'haz lo que quieras, toma lo que desees'. La anarquía es total. Pese a la duda de sus fieles a esos principios y a Galactus, Colton manifiesta que Galactus es la ley y él su profeta.

The introduction of the Silver Surfer is done through one of the typical cop´s cliches as the prejudice against a homeless. The supposed homeless must have stolen the surfboard that he´s carrying. There is no burden of proof, but it does not matter. When the homeless is going to be arrested for no other reason than a guess, the cops are blinded by an intense light. Seems to be an irony: they were blind before, but now they are blind due the light of truth. And the truth is purely introduced, without wearing any disturbing clothes: Silver Sulfer, naked, has nothing to hide. A new superheroe has born.
Silver Surfer will try to convince Colton, but it can not be. Elyna challenges Silver Surfer to confront Galactus, and he will accept the challenge. Silver Surfer uses the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt ('it is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed') and gives them a wonderful poetic and rhythmic turn: 'It is not known whether we will succeed or not. There is no misfortune in failing. There is only one last shame: the cowardice of not have been trying'.

La introducción de Silver Surfer se realiza mediante el típico prejuicio policial en contra de vagabundos. El supuesto vagabundo ha debido robar la tabla de surf que lleva. No hay ninguna prueba, pero no importa. Cuando el vagabundo va a ser detenido -sin otro motivo alguno más que la especulación-, los policías quedan cegados por una intensa luz. Se trata de una ironía: eran ciegos antes, y ahora lo son ante la luz de la verdad. Silver Surfer, desnudo, nada tiene que ocultar. Ha nacido un nuevo superhéroe.
Silver Surfer tratará de convencer a Colton, pero no podrá ser. Elyna retrá a Silver Surfer a confrontar a Galcatus, y el superhéroe aceptará el reto. Silver Surfer utiliza las palabras de Franklin D. Roosevelt ('en la vida hay algo peor que el fracaso, y es no haber intentado nada'), y les da una vuelta poética y rítmica maravillosa. Afterwards, we see three scenes developed with an extraordianry visual and narrative talent. The page is divided practically in thirds where we can appreciate:
- To the left, a low angle shows the difference in size of Galactus and Silver Surfer, where the simple strategy of Galactus is explained: to leave the humans to destroy borrowing his name. The explanation is attached to the Human History, particularly with the religious wars.
- To the right, a high angle and with a smaller size, it appears Silver Surfer. The heroe argues, but the lack of understanding will drive to the fight.
- Between both, approximately centered, a high angle shows the people. Drawn smaller than the supervillain and the superheroe, we do understand their weakness. The same color disposed for the background and the people explains that they are only a scenario, practical viewers of what is going to happen.

A sniper will try to kill Silver Surfer (it brings again an iconic image, the John F. Kennedy assassination, such as the Army. The heroe only looks after Galactus. Galactus destroys part of the city when Silver surfer runs aways from him. The supervillain chose to destroy the heroe without taking care of anything else.

Unas páginas después, se llega a las tres escenas arriba indicadas, de una fuerza visual y narrativa extraordinaria. La página se divide casi a tercios, donde:
- En la viñeta de la izquierda, en un contrapicado que escala la diferencia en tamaño de Galactus y Silver Surfer, se desarrolla la sencilla estrategia de supervillano: dejar al ser humano que se destruya en su nombre. La narración conecta de lleno con la historia de la humanidad, especialmente con la de las guerras religiosas.
- En la viñeta de la derecha, en picado y con un tamaño intermedio e inferior al de Galactus, aparece The Silver Surfer. En esta parte se desarrolla la contra-argumentación del superhéroe. La falta de entendimiento conducirá a la lucha después.
- Y entre las dos anteriores y aproximadamente en el centro, con otro picado, la población. Ésta tiene un tamaño menor que el supervillano y el superhéroe, para dar a entender su escasa fuerza. Y mediante un color donde la masa se confunde con su alrededor, se comunica que no son más que escenario, o si se prefiere, tan sólo espectadores del enfrentamiento.

The Silver Surfer trata de convencer a algunos ciudadanos, pero no es posible. Un francotirador intentará matarle (lo que trae de nuevo la imagen icónica del asesinato de John F. Kennedy), y también lo intenta el ejército. Pero él no les devuelve el fuego, sino que se enfrenta sólo con Galactus. Huyendo de él, Galactus lo único que consigue es destruir partes de la ciudad. Está claro que al tirano sólo le importa la destrucción del superhéroe, pase lo que pase.

Elyna tries to stop her brother, but nothing can convince Colton, who only wants power. The plausibility is anchored by parallel historic referents of the U.S., such as socio-politic conditions (Roosevelt, Kennedy, New York City blackout) or prejudices.

Elyna trata de parar a su hermano, pero nada puede convencer a Colton, que sólo ansía el poder. La verosimilitud del cómic se ancla mediante referentes históricos paralelos de Estados Unidos. Referencias geográficas (Chicago), socio-políticas (Roosevelt, Kennedy, apagón de Nueva York) o prejuicios.

The second number opens with a full page confirms that Silver Surfer is faster than Galactus. Violence inncreases. Silver Surfer tries to save the major but Galactus will not allow it. Finally, Coltonn reacts.

El segundo número abre con una hoja completa donde se confirma que Silver Surfer es más rápido que Galactus. La violencia aumenta la violencia. Silver Surfer intenta salvar al alcalde pero Galactus no lo permitirá. Colton por fin reacciona.

United Nations invites Silver Surfer intending to accpet him as a leader. Silver Surfer realizes the misery of the human being, always in the hands of leaders who only look for their own sake. Silver Surfer speaks in order to be rejected. When this happens, Colton himself argues thar the superheroe could have been a good god. It is a tesitmony to confirm Silver Surfer's disenchantment with all of us.

La ONU invita a Silver Surfer y pretenden hacerlo líder. Silver Surfer se da cuenta de la desdicha del ser humano, siempre en manos de líderes que sólo miran su propio bienestar. Y da un discurso con el fin de se rechazado. Cuando esto sucede, el propio Colton argumenta que podría haber sido un buen dios. Es un testimonio que ratifica el desencanto de Silver Surfer sobre los seres humanos.

The last scene is impressive and with great poetic strength. Silver Surfer watches over the Eart, but there is no border or contour lines showing a specific country or continent. He says: ''I ride my board. It matters not how far, it matters not howfast. I have known the exaltation of the victory. I have known the crawing pain of defeat. I have no destination. I go were the winds of chance may carry me. But I shall never cease scarcing for an oasis of sanity in this desert of madness that men call Earth. For the worst fate of all amidst countless worlds and endless stars...is to be forever alone.''

La última escena es impresionante y con gran fuerza poética. Silver Surfer vigila sobre la Tierra, pero no aparece un contorno definido de país o continente concretos. Y manifiesta: 'Monto en mi tabla'. 'No importa qué lejos, no importa la velocidad'. 'He conocido la exaltación embriagadora de la victoria. He conocido el dolor torturador de la derrota'. 'No tengo otro destino. Voy donde me lleva el viento del azar'. 'Pero nunca dejaré de buscar un oasis de cordura en ese desierto de locura que los hombres llaman Tierra'. 'Pero el peor destino de todos, en medio de innumerables mundos y estrellas sin fin...'es, '... estar para siempre sólo'.

On Saturday 17th September, The Brownsville Herald wrote about the itiative done by the City of Brownsville, Texas, to reuse for one day parking sights, usually overlooked due its everyday.

El periódico The Brownsville Herald recoge en su ejemplar del sábado 17 de Septiembre, la iniciativa del Ayuntamiento de Brownsville, Texas, para la reutilización por un día de los aparcamientos en calle, un espacio que tantas veces suele pasar desapercibido por su cotidianidad.

This event allows a different way to see them, repeating something done before elsewhere in the United States. It seems that New York started this experience. However, The madrileños who read these lines, madrileños are the natives of Madrid, none of this is new, since they have been enjoying El Rastro for more than four hundred years. Every Sunday, the streets of El Rastro are no longer the place of transit and parking cars, but pedestrian streets where people try to find their own treasures. Through all kind of second-hand goods. Those products to be sold, the atmosphere of the surrounding, not only attracts thousands of collectors, but a large number of tourists. El Rastro can change our lives for a moment, even if you cross it first hour in the morning such as the serious collectors do, or later on as a fan.

Este evento permite una mirada diferente, repitiendo una experiencia hecha en otros lugares de Estados Unidos. Tal vez fuera Nueva York la primera ciudad donde surgió; sin embargo, imagino que para los madrileños que leen estas líneas, nada de esto les suena a novedad, cuando llevan cuatrocientos años disfrutando El Rastro. Todos los domingos, las calles del Rastro dejan de ser el lugar de tránsito y aparcamiento de automóviles, para convertirse en paseos que los peatones recorren a la búsqueda de sus tesoros, a través de todo tipo de mercancías de segunda mano. Pero lo que se vende no sólo atare a miles de coleccionistas, sino a un gran número de turistas. Por eso El Rastro no deja igual a quienes lo recorren, sea a primera hora de la mañana, cuando en verdad la cruzan los coleccionistas más serios, o los aficionados, algo más tarde.

The City of Brownsville, Texas, would seek with this kind of event to revitalize the Historic Downtown through new urban experiments. In the future, these spaces might have another usage, as El Rastro has. So the brownsvillian and touristic available spending will be kept in Brownsville. That spending, defined as the portion of salary that a person saves to buy goods, is very important for the cities. It not only is a socio-ecomomic measure parameter, that could be used to compare the position with other cities with which it competes, but shows the efficiency of the city responding to the demand its inhabitants and tourists, generating wealth and economic dinamism.

Con el evento realizado recientemente en Brownsville, el Ayuntamiento pretendería revitalizar el casco histórico mediante nuevos experimentos urbanos. En el futuro, estos espacios podrían tener puntualmente otro destino, como El Rastro lo tiene. Y así, contener el gasto disponible de residentes y turistas en Brownsville. Ese gasto, definido como la parte de salario que toda persona ahorra para destinarlo a consumir bienes, es muy importante en una ciudad. No sólo la sitúa en parámetros socio-económicos respecto a otras ciudades con las que compite, sino que es un reflejo de la eficiencia de dicha ciudad en responder a la demanda de sus habitantes o visitantes, ya que genera riqueza y dinamismo económico.

If part or the total sum of such expenditure, as The Brownsville Herald purport to explain in its second page, although the lack of space does not allow it, escapes to another place, it becomes an escapee spending. Cities with high escapee spending rates lose jobs, are quickly impoverish, and lose attractive for their inhabitants. There is a double reason: on the one hand, these cities do not have a wide range of products for sale, and on the other, the inability to collect a certain amount of taxes difficults the adequate public utilities services. So some residents begin to look other places where these services are not in risk, or maybe wealthy people, which increases the problems due their substantial contribution. An example to avoid lose population and attract foreign buyers is Harlingen, Tx. First Saturday of every month, Harlingen closes its main street, Jackson St., and it is being offered not only antiques but other kind of products and activities, attracting many people of the surroundings.

Si una parte o la totalidad de ese gasto, tal y como pretende señalar The Brownsville Herald en su segunda página, aunque la falta de espacio impide una explicación de lo ahora mencionado, se escapa a otro lugar, se transforma en un gasto evadido. Las ciudades con un alto índice de gasto evadido pierden puestos de trabajo, se empobrecen rápidamente y pierden atractivo para sus habitantes. El motivo es doble: por un lado, no disponen de una oferta variada de productos a la venta, y por otro, la imposibilidad de recaudar impuestos hace que sus ayuntamientos no puedan satisfacer las necesidades básicas de sus habitantes. Agua, luz, alcantarillado, limpieza, sanidad, asfaltado de calles, seguridad, y otros intereses sociales entran en riesgo. Y los residentes comienzan a mirar otros lugares para vivir, o al menos, la población con mayor poder adquisitivo, lo que aumenta los problemas, pues son los que mayor aportan económicamente. Un ejemplo para evitar la fuga de residentes, y atraer compradores foráneos, lo tenemos en la vecina Harlingen. El primer sábado de mes, Harlingen cierra su calle principal, Jackson, y además de ofertar antigüedades a través de varias tiendas especializadas, otros vendedores y actividades culturales se establecen en el 'mercadillo', atrayendo así a muchos curiosos de los alrededores.

Per capita income (individual average income), the available spending, and finally the escapee spending to the competence are the principal ratios that any experienced mall developer researches to know the potential area of a future mall. I used to write for many professional media back in Spain (search by ´Juan Manuel Velez Salinas´), calculating the areas for different activities, basing the system into these kind of ratios within a future mall to be developed. Therefore the total surface to open an activity, the potential sellings and a reasonable annual renting price were given to the readers, because all of these subjects are linked.

Brownsville was born as a trading city between Mexico and United States, after Texas became a new State. Located in an strategic point of Rio Grande, nearby Fort Brown that control the borderline. The oldest historical commercial buildings are located in the Downtown, between de perpendicular web created by the streets East Levee-East Adams, and International Blvd.-11 St. The orientation of the streets allows to receive the sun correctly, but at the same time, the breeze coming from the Mexico Gulf. The buildings are developed following the 'border brick' style, following the existing tradition located in Mexico, inherited from Spain. This style uses masonry brick; the entablature is soberly decorated by some brick lines protuding from its plumb-line, and sometimes vertical bricks showing the header and creating denticles, to break its monotony. Some buildings with a second floor, use to have a balcony around the corner, showing an iron railing, following examples of New Orleans.

Los edificios, desarrollados con el estilo conocido como 'ladrillo fronterizo', continúan una tradición ya existente en Méjico que a su vez fue aprehendida de España. In the mid-90's, I lived the changed happened in different European cities taht reborn their Downtowns: Madrid, Bilbao, London, Dublin. And it is because the attractiveness of the historic Downtown of each city cannot be matched. In addition, any other city in Rio Grande Valley can historically compete with Brownsville due it was the first, and it has also numerous historical buildings from different ages. It is a clear bet. With hard work, knowledge, and perseverance, we who work in the City of Brownsville, will recover back our historic Downtown. And then, the sleeping heart of Brownsville.

El esfuerzo del Ayuntamiento Brownsville se centra precisamente en captar el interés hacia el centro urbano, mediante continuos eventos que buscan alternativas que lo enriquezcan: música, decoración urbana, e incluso activación artística mediante importantes artistas regionales, estatales o incluso nacionales. Recuperar de nuevo el atractivo del centro requerirá tiempo, sin embargo han respondido inmediatamente distintos empresarios, abriendo restaurantes, galerías de arte y tiendas de moda. Me tocó vivir a mediados de los años 90, el cambio sucedido en distintas ciudades europeas que dieron de nuevo luz a sus cascos históricos: Madrid, Bilbao, Londres, Dublín. Y es que el atractivo del centro histórico de cada ciudad no puede ser igualado. Además, Brownsville no tiene ninguna otra ciudad en el Valle del Río Grande que pueda competir por antiguedad o riqueza arquitectónica. Es una apuesta ganadora. El pasado 15 de julio un coleccionista residente en California (USA), adquirió mi acuarela "Plaza de Castilla". Sus dimensiones son de 31 x 41 cm. Está realizada sobre papel Arches 300gr, y fue exhibida en la exposición individual celebrada en el Festival Internacional de Tamaulipas 2015 (Teatro La Reforma, Matamoros, México).

Representa una vista hacia el norte desde el Paseo de La Castellana, mostrando la Puerta de Europa, también llamada Torres KIO, debido a su promotor inmobiliario, Kuwait Investment Office. Fue realizada entre 1989 y 1996, las torres inclinadas fueron diseñadas por Philip Johnson (Premio Pritzker, 1979) y John Burgee. Tienen una inclinación de 15º, y son los primeros rascacielos inclinados del mundo. Leslie E. Robertson Associates (LERA), ingeniería de Nueva York, realizó los adecuados servicios estructurales.
El clímax de la película ''El día de la bestia'' (1995), tiene lugar en la azotea de una de ellas, cuando los edificios estaban a punto de concluirse.

Detrás de las torres, puede verse el Obelisco, donado por la antigua Caja de Madrid, un proyecto fallido donde Santiago Calatrava intentaba lograr mediante un movimiento bascular, la impresión del movimiento en ascensión de una onda a lo largo de la columna.

Tras el Obelisco aparecen tres de las llamadas Cuatro Torres, pues la cuarta está oculta entre las demás. El rascacielos más destacado y elegante de los cuatro es la Torre Cepsa, diseñada por Norman Foster (Premio Pritzker, 1999). Las ingenierías fueron Halvorson & Partners (Chicago) y GMS (Nueva York).

It represents a north view from La Castellana Avenue, looking to the Gate of Europe, also named KIO Towers due their developer, Kuwait Investment Office. Built between 1989 and 1996, these two leaning towers were designed by the american architects Philip Johnson (1979 Pritzker Architecture Award) and John Burgee. They have an inclination of 15º, making them the first inclined skyscrapers in the world. Leslie E. Robertson Associates (LERA), a firm from New York, provided structural engineer services. The climax of the movie The Day of the Beast (1995) took place on the roof of one of them, when the buildings were near to be completed.

Behind the Gate of Europe, it can be seen The Obelisc, donated by the named Caja de Madrid. It is a failed project were Santiago Calatrava tried to achieve by a tilting movement, the impression of the upward movement done by a wave along the column.

Three of the Cuatro Torres Business Area can be seen behind the Obelisc. The fourth is hidden between the rest. The most prominent and elegant skyscraper of this Area is the Cepsa Tower, designed by Norman Foster (1999 Pritzker Architecture Award). The engenieers were Halvorson & Partners (Chicago) and GMS (New York).

Eugène Baboulène (1905-1994) born and dies in Toulon, a french city located between Marseille and Saint-Tropez. It belongs to the region called Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Baboulène studies at the School of Fine Arts (l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts) of Toulon (1917-1924). He is a student of Gabriel Amoretti, Edmond Barbaroux and Laurent Mattio.

Eugène Baboulène (1905-1994) nace y muere en Toulon, ciudad costera francesa localizada entre Marsella y Saint-Tropez, y perteneciente a la región de Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Baboulène estudia en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de su ciudad (1917-1924). Es alumno de Gabriel Amoretti, Edmond Barbaroux y Laurent Mattio.

He travels to Paris, where he also studies at the National School of Decorative Arts (1929-1931). He also attends some courses at the National School of Fine Arts (l'Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts).

In 1931, the artist returns to Toulon, where he decorates, among other buildings, the Theatre of the city. Before the II World War, Toulon is an attractive city to artists searching light on their landscapes. In 1936, Baboulène a teacher at the School of Fine Arts of Toulon, meets with other artists that are also teachers at the University, such as the french impressionist landscape painter Jose Mange (1866-1935), and Henri Olive-Tamari (1898-1980).

En 1931, el artista vuelve a Toulon, y decora, entre otros edificios, el teatro del municipio. En los años previos a la II Guerra Mundial, Toulon es una ciudad atractiva para los pintores en busca de luz en sus paisajes. En 1936, Baboulene, profesor en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de su ciudad natal, coincide con otros artistas que imparten también clases, profesores como el pintor impresionista francés de paisajes José Mange (1866-1935) y Henri Olive-Tamari (1898-1980).

He has a first exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants in 1939, but after a decisive meeting with Antoni Clavé, an exiled catalan painter, painting will be his only dedication from 1945. From the fifties, his talent is recognized. In 1979, he becomes a l'Académie du Var member.

Tiene una primera exposición en el Salón des Indépendants en 1939, pero tras un encuentro decisivo con Antoni Clavé, pintor catalán exiliado, la pintura será su única dedicación a partir de 1945, siendo a partir de los años cincuenta cuando se reconoce su talento. Baboulène is considered one of the best painters of the Contemporary School School of Provence. His work is characterized by a warm and unpretentious atmosphere on his landscapes and seascapes, represented by bold but harmonic colors. His painting is considered the most reflexive within the figuration trend.

Baboulène está considerado como uno de los mejores pintores de la Escuela Contemporánea de la Provenza. Su obra se caracteriza por la atmósfera cálida y sencilla de sus paisajes y marinas, representados mediante colores audaces y sin embargo, armónicos. Su pintura se considera la más reflexiva dentro de la figuración.

The original provenance of the "Still Life with Melons" lithography is the Galerie Romanet, París. It consists on a design done with twelve on Holland Van Gelder paper. The full set is numbered from 1 to 35, and printed in the Master Printer Atelier called Ballon, Paris.

The artist creates the harmony using a base of primary color, yellow. This color covers a considerable part of the paper; over the base said, Baboulène mixes another primary color, blue, to the different ranges of green: from warm (fruit), to semi-cold (edges of the pillow) or cold (gray green on wall of the background). Finally, by using of a color adjacent to the third primary (red), such as umber, the artist finishes the work, adding punctual strokes in black to shape other objects.

La litografía "Naturaleza muerta con melones", procede originalmente de la Galerie Romanet, París. Está compuesta por doce colores sobre papel holanda Van Gelder. La tirada está numerada del 1 al 35, e impresa en el Taller del Maestro Impresor Ballon, en París. El artista crea la armonía a partir de una base con un color primario, el amarillo. Este color cubre gran parte de la obra, sobre el cual Baboulène mezcla otro color primario, el azul, para formar diferentes matices cálidos de verde en la fruta, semifríos en los bordes del almohadón, o bien un verde grisáceo frío para alejar la pared del fondo. Finalmente, usa un color adyacente al tercer primario (rojo), el tierra, para rematar la obra mediante unos toques puntuales en negro que conforman otros objetos.

The reference paper from the french galerie is a surprise, because the name of the work is "Still Life with Melons", so it could indicate that the set clearly focus towards the international market. As shown, there is another set done on Arches paper (numbered from 1 to 55).

The dimensions are 18.5" x 22.5".

The date could be something between 1974 and 1978, due the similarity with some oil paintings from that era.

Sorprende que el papel de referencia de la galería francesa titula la litografía como "Still life with melons", lo que podría indicar su orientación hacia el mercado internacional de esta serie.

Tal y como se indica, existe otra tirada de esta serie sobre papel Arches (numeradas del 1 al 55).

Las dimensiones de la litografía son de 46 x 57 cm.

Posiblemente Baboulène la cree entre 1974 y 1978, por su similitud con algunos óleos de esa época.

The lithography is framed in "Prints, etc."

The store is located in 494 Jackson Square, San Francisco, California. Its opening was in 1957, and it is still open. The shop also sells antique prints, old photos from San Francisco, etc. Possibly this lithograph was bought in the same shop in the late 70's, considering the previous comment concerning the title of the work. It has been protected by a matted (ivory color) and glass.

La litografía está enmarcada en "Prints, etc".
La tienda se encuentra en 494 Jackson Square, San Francisco, California. Su inauguración fue en 1957, y hoy en día todavía sigue operativa. Vende además grabados antiguos, fotos antiguas de San Francisco, etc. Posiblemente esta litografía fue adquirida en la propia tienda hacia finales de los años 70, considerando el comentario del título de la obra antes realizado. Se protege mediante un paspartú de color marfil y un cristal.

FOOL FOR LOVE (SAM SHEPARD) & ELVIS PRESLEY FOREVER (USPS)

"Locos de amor" (1983), escrita por Sam Shepard, fue editada en España en 1998 por Anagrama. Es una obra de teatro donde los personajes encadenan encuentros y desencuentros mediante ásperos diálogos, motivados por un amor incontrolado por los celos mutuos. ¿Cómo dar Lo Real, ese imposible que diría Lacan, que ha sido expulsado por Lo Simbólico de la realidad? Al no poder ser simbolizado en la palabra, la única manera de traerlo de nuevo a Lo Simbólico es por contraste, esto es, a través del trauma: Eddie y May se aman, sí, o no, o no se sabe bien hasta que avanza la lectura: su relación arde porque subyace el incesto. Un tabú demasiado fuerte, dramático en la sociedad.

"Es un absoluto infierno", diría Shepard refiriéndose al enamoramiento que tuvo por Jessica Lange, tras compartir protagonismo en la durísima película "Frances" (1982), de Graeme Clifford. Probablemente ese mismo sentimiento le ayudaría a escribir la obra, ya que en 1983 comenzaron a vivir juntos como pareja.

"Fool for Love" (1983), written by Sam Shepard, was published in Spain in 1998 by Anagrama. It's a play where the characters link meetings and disagreements through harsh dialogues, motivated by uncontrolled love or mutual jealousy. How to obtain the Real, that impossible as Lacan said, which has been expelled by the Symbolic of the reality? Unable to be symbolized with the word, the only way to bring it back to the Symbolic, that is, by contrast, through the trauma: Eddie and May are in love, yes, or not, or we do not really know until you advance the reading: their relationship burn because underlies an incest. Too strong taboo, dramatic in our community.

"It is an absolute hell," would said Shepard referring to his amorousness on Jessica Lange, after sharing the main characters of the tough film 'Frances' (1982), directed by Graeme Clifford.

El significante llega violentamente, pues violento es el amor en juego. Y ahora se da inscrito en el orden de lo simbólico: el camión arde. Estamos ante el "mal encuentro" experimentado por el sujeto, según el accidente citado por Freud y retomado como ejemplo por Lacan: un padre sueña que su hijo, muerto en la realidad a consecuencia de una fiebre, le interpela.
- ¡Padre!, ¿no ves que ardo?
El padre no despierta, mientras en la otra habitación arde el cadáver del niño al haberse caído una vela del velatorio.
El camión representa la permanente huida de la que le acusa May. Ahora que está en llamas, que ya es inservible, la huida se representa mediante los caballos.

Voy a salir a echar un vistazo. Por lo menos tengo que echar un vistazo, ¿no?

The significant comes violently, because violent is the love at stake. And now occurs inscribed within the order of the symbolic: the truck burns. We are facing the "bad encounter", experienced by the subject, according to the accident aforementioned by Freud, and taken up by Lacan as an example: a father dreams that his son, really dead as a result of a fever, challenges him.
"Father !, don't you see that I'm burning?"
The father did not wake up, while in the other room the child's body burns because a candle in the wake has fallen.
The truck represents the permanent escape accused by May. No that it is on fire, that is already useless, the flight is represented by the horses.

EDDIE. (Steps back away from May). Yeah, I figured.

MAY. Eddie-

EDDIE. (To May). I'm just gonna' go out and take a look. I gotta' at least take a look, don't I?

Eddie no va a comprobar el estado de su propiedad, no le hace falta, dice. Sólo pretende huir una vez más.
El propio Shepard acostumbraba a hacerlo en su vida real: cogía su coche y escapaba al sur, sin más motivo que el conducir. Sin destino alguno. Lo recoge en alguno de sus cuentos.
Y May, que se da cuenta, hace la maleta y se va tras Eddie. Y es que no se puede vivir ni con el objeto de deseo 'a' explicado por Lacan, ni sin él. Ese amor entre los protagonistas, es el sinvivir. El viejo, con la afirmación categórica final, no hace más que confirmar lo contrario y corroborar lo Real, el imposible.

VIEJO (señalando el espacio vacío, a la izquierda)
¿Ves ese cuadro de ahí? ¿Lo ves? ¿Sabes quién es? Esa es la mujer de mis sueños. Es ella. Y es mía. Toda mía. Para siempre.

Eddie does not check how are his properties, he does not need it, he said. Eddie is going to run away, once more.
Shepard himself used to do it in his real life: he took his car quite often, and escape to the south, for no other reason that driven. Without any destination. In many of his stories is written.
And May, that realizes it, pack up and goes after Eddie. Because you can not live with the object-cause of desire 'a' explained by Lacan, or without it. That love between the protagonists, is a desperation. With the final categorical statement, the Old man does nothing but confirm the opposite, and corroborate the Real, the impossible.

THE OLD MAN. (Pointing into space). Ya' see that picture over there? Ya' see that? Ya' know who that is? That's the woman of my dreams. That's who that is. And she's mine. She's all mine.

Debido a la obsesión del escritor por Lange, Sam incumplió su compromiso con Wim Wenders, no actuando ni concluyendo el guión de "Paris-Texas" (1984), si bien éste se encontraba prácticamente perfilado. Bastaron unas cuantas -desesperadas- llamadas del director al dramaturgo, para que Wenders pudiera retomar y finalizar la historia.
La portada de ese libro, "Locos de amor", siempre me ha cautivado: una fotografía en la cual Alfred Wertheimer atrapa a un Elvis Presley jugando, sin disimulo, con el principio de un beso. El cosquilleo del espectador contemplando esta foto, tal vez se deba a la directa y aislada sensación que puede provocar la parte más carnal del beso, desnudo en sí. La cita se produce entre bastidores del Teatro Mosque, en Richmond, Virginia. El concierto ya ha terminado. Y Elvis aún no era famoso.

Because of the writer's obsession for Lange, Sam failed to fulfill his commitment with Wim Wenders, without acting or completing the screenplay for "Paris-Texas" (1984), although this was practically outlined. It took a few -hopeless- calls from the director to the playwright, in order that Wenders could return and finish the story.
The cover of the book, "Fool for Love" has always intrigued me: a photograph in which Alfred Wertheimer catches Elvis Presley, openly playing, with the beginning of a kiss. The tickling of the viewer contemplating this photograph, it might be due to the direct and isolated thrill that could cause the most carnal part of a kiss, itself naked. The date occurs in the backstage of the Mosque Theater in Richmond, Virginia. The concert is over. And Elvis was not famous yet.

Unos meses antes, el 12 de marzo, Weltheimer había recibido una llamada: Anne Fulchino le pedía cubrir el Show de los Hermanos Dorsey, Tommy y Jimmy. "Fotografía sólo a Elvis", dijo. "¿Elvis quién?", preguntó él. Aquella sesión sería el principio de un vínculo del que no se ha podido separar jamás. La eternidad por esas fotografías hechas durante una serie de años a un cantante que pasó de ser desconocido a un ídolo mundial. Pero Alfred aún no lo sabía.

A few months earlier, on March 12, Wertheimer had received a call: Anne Fulchino asked him to serve the Dorsey Brothers Show, Tommy and Jimmy. "Only shoot to Elvis Presley," she said. "Elvis who?," he asked. That work would be the beginning of a link which he has not been able to ever separate from it. The eternity fo those photographs done during a number of years to a singer who went from being unknown to a world idol. But Alfred did not know yet.

No era la primera vez que Elvis se dejaba retratar. Entre finales de 1954 y principios de 1955, ante la insistencia de su promotor, Bob Neal, William Speer le haría once fotos de desigual calidad. A Elvis le gustaron, como también a Neal, pues entre 1955 y 1958 Speer haría fotos de otro de sus músicos, Johnny Cash. Presley se acercó de nuevo para que el fotógrafo retratara a su novia. Comenzó a cantar en el cuarto de espera, pero Speer le mandó callar. Nunca volvió. William acababa de perder a quien pudo ser su mejor cliente, pero en ese momento, todavía lo ignoraba.

It was not the first time that Elvis let himself to be photographed. Between late 1954 and early 1955, due the insistence of his music representant, Bob Neal, William Speer would make eleven photos of uneven quality. Elvis liked them, such as Neal, because between 1955 and 1958 Speer photographed to other of his musicians, Johnny Cash. Presley came back so the photographer could photograph his girlfriend. He began to sing in the waiting room, but Speer order him to stop. He never returned. William lost paradise, but at that time, he ignored yet.

Sesenta años más tarde, el Servicio Postal de Estados Unidos (USPS) ha publicado una magnífica serie dentro de la colección Iconos, simulando la envoltura de un disco de vinilo. Para ello rescata la "mejor fotografía hecha nunca de Elvis", según críticos de arte y musicales, y la imprime dieciséis veces. En la otra cara, Elvis se encuentra en plena actuación. Adivinen quien tiene un juego.

Sixty years later, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has published an excellent series within the Icons collection, simulating the covers of a vinyl record. The USPS rescues the "best picture ever made of Elvis," according to art critics and music, and prints it sixteen times. On the flip side, Elvis is performing. Guess who has a full sheet.

DECLARACIÓN - STATEMENT

“La íntima conciencia que tenemos -decía el filósofo José Gaos, español exiliado durante la Guerra Civil española y pronto nacionalizado mejicano en 1941-, es la percepción interna”; con ella percibimos nuestras imaginaciones, pensamientos o sentimientos, pero no de los objetos. De los objetos, como de lo imaginado, nos quedamos únicamente con la percepción externa. En la percepción lo percibido está presente, mientras que un objeto o un sentimiento ajeno nos están representados. Por ello, tanto imágenes como recuerdos, pensamientos y la mayoría de los sentimientos, no tienen naturaleza de actos. Actos serían las percepciones, o los propios actos de imaginar, recordar y pensar, o el propio acto de amar u odiar. Imaginamos cosas puramente imaginarias, como la imagen de un centauro. "La imagen de un centauro es el equivalente del caballo percibido. No es el equivalente del acto de la percepción. Lo equivalente del acto de la percepción con que percibimos el caballo, es el acto de la imaginación con que nos imaginamos la imagen del centauro". Por tanto las imágenes no son actos, sino objetos de actos.

Y como tales objetos, puede proponerse su representación. Si hay conformidad entre la proposición y la realidad percibida, la propuesta será verdad, y falsa si ocurre lo contrario. De ese modo, que el artista proponga objetos no terminados en los que los espectadores no pierdan la percepción de tales objetos, sería verdad. En estos trabajos, continuación de los expuestos recientemente en el Museo Fuerte Casamata de esta misma ciudad y que aún pueden visitarse, son la forma más próxima a los objetos que percibo, y una forma de representarme a través del agua y del color.

La propuesta no persigue la exactitud en su representación, sino que el espectador, a través de su acto de imaginar, los complete conforme a su imaginario. Si el espectador lo recuerda, y lo percibe equivalente, la propuesta será verdad.

Así, cabría que la propuesta apenas contuviera unos rasgos suficientemente distintivos de la Catedral para que el matamorense la percibiera como válida, permitiéndole la libertad para cerrar el dibujo. Podría sugerirse por presencia de color, como en “Edificio Telefónica desde Bellas Artes” o su ausencia, “Catedral de nuestra Señora del Refugio”; o por línea a lápiz/color, como “Gran Vía desde Bellas Artes”, y cómo no, por ambas, “Casa de Correos. Reloj de Torre, Madrid”.

Se han trabajado varias técnicas: en acuarela, seco sobre seco (evitando la transparencia habitual del medio), húmedo sobre seco, y húmedo sobre húmedo, mientras que en tinta aguada seco y aplicando agua a continuación.

La muestra se centra prácticamente en el paisaje urbano de Matamoros y Madrid.

From objects, as from what we imagined, we take only the external perception. In perception is being present what we perceived, while an object or an alien feeling are represented. Therefore, both images and memories, thoughts and feelings do not have nature of acts. Perceptions would be acts, or imagining acts themselves, or remembering and thinking, or the act of love and hate itself. We imagine purely imaginary things, like the image of a centaur. 'The image of a centaur is the equivalent of the horse perceived. It is not the equivalent of the act of perception. The equivalent of the act of perception we perceive the horse, is the act of imagination that we imagine the image of a centaur'. Images, memories, thoughts or most of feelings are not acts, but intentional objects. Therefore 'the images are not acts[...]but objects of acts'.

And as such objects, representation may be proposed. If there is an agreement between the proposition and the perceived reality, the proposal will be true, and false if the opposite happens. Thus, if the artist proposed unfinished objects in which viewers do not lose the perception of such objects, the proposed representation would be true. In these works suchs as those hanging right now at Casamata Museum, are the closest way to the objects I perceive, and a way to represent me through the water and color.

The proposal does not pursue the accuracy of its representation, but that the viewer, through his act of imagining, could complete the objects in accordance to their imagination. If the viewer remembers and perceives equivalency, the proposal will become true.

The proposal, for example, could contain some sufficiently distinctive features of the Cathedral, so the matamorense perceived it as meaningful, allowing to the viewer sometimes the freedom to close the drawing. It might be suggested by color, as in ‘Telefonica Building from the Fine Arts Building’, or its lack such as in ‘Virgen del Refugio Cathedral’; or with line/color as ‘Gran Via from Fine Arts Building’, and of course, using both of them, such as in ‘Casa de Correos, Watch Tower’.

Several techniques have been used: dry on dry (avoiding the usual transparency of the watercolor), wet in dry and wet in wet.

The exhibition almost focuses in urban landscape of Matamoros and Madrid.

El filósofo José Gaos, español exiliado durante la Guerra Civil española y pronto nacionalizado mejicano en 1941, país en el que moriría en 1969, consideraba que entre los "fenómenos de conciencia", tanto imágenes como recuerdos, pensamientos y la mayoría de los sentimientos, no tienen naturaleza de actos. Serían actos las percepciones, o los propios actos de imaginar, recordar y pensar, o el propio acto de amar u odiar. "La imagen de un centauro es el equivalente del caballo percibido. No es el equivalente del acto de la percepción. Lo equivalente del acto de la percepción con que percibimos el caballo, es el acto de la imaginación con que nos imaginamos la imagen del centauro". Imágenes, recuerdos, pensamientos o la mayoría de los sentimientos no son actos, sino objetos de actos. Por tanto lo equivalente al acto de percibir un paisaje -La Albufera de Valencia-, un entorno urbano -la Plaza de Cibeles- o un yate, es el acto de imaginarlos. Porque como decía Gaos, "...las imágenes no son actos[...]sino objetos de actos".

Y como tales objetos, puede proponerse su representación. Si hay conformidad entre la proposición y la realidad percibida, la propuesta será verdad, y falsa si ocurre lo contrario. Por tanto que el artista proponga objetos que ve o desearía ver, sin que se pierda la percepción de tales objetos, sería verdad. Estos trabajos son la forma más auténtica que encuentro para no sólo representar cada objeto, sino de presentarme a través del agua y del color.

La propuesta para que el espectador perciba los objetos presentados en esta exposición se produce a través de su acto de imaginar: no persiguen la exactitud en su representación, sino que el espectador los complete conforme a su imaginario. Si el espectador realiza el acto de recordar o imaginar el objeto representado, y lo percibe como su equivalente, el objeto será verdad.

The proposal for the viewer is to perceive the objects of this exhibition through the act of imagining: objects do not chase the accuracy of their representation, but to complete them due the viewer's imagination. If the viewer does the act of remembering or imagining the object represented, and the viewer perceives as equivalent, the object will be true.

Entonces cabe que las propuestas apenas contengan unos rasgos suficientemente distintivos de la Catedral o de la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Matamoros, o por qué no, de la Casa Cross o del edificio de la Presidencia Municipal, para que el ojo del matamorense las percibiera como válidas, permitiéndole incluso en ocasiones, la libertad para que cierre el dibujo. Podría sugerirse por color, por línea, y cómo no, por ambas.

So the proposals could contain some sufficiently distinctive features of the Cathedral, or the Sacred Heart Church of Matamoros, or why not, the Cross Building or the City Hall, and the matamorenses's eye could perceive them as meaningful, allowing sometimes the freedom to close the drawing. It might be suggested by color, line, and of course, using both of them.

The exhibition covers various topics (urban landscape, landscape, figure, seascape, abstract) located in such diverse cities as Madrid, where I have lived most of my life, Paris, Granada or Marrakesch.

Selected for the 70th Watercolor Exhibition "Spring Exhibition 2015". It will take place in "La Lonja", Clock House (Paseo de la Chopera, 10) in Madrid, from 30th of April 30th (19.00 hours) to 18th of May. La Real Casa de Correos is the oldest building and the more significant located at Puerta del Sol, because the New Year´s Eve celebration is held in front of the building while people take their 12 grapes listening the 12 chimes, one on behalf of each month of the future year.
