This project is a unique alliance between 4-star accommodations and a museum experience that takes visitors on an exceptional voyage through the traditions and contemporary culture of the First Nations and Inuit. Located in an enchanting setting on the Akiawenrahk River, the hotel/museum complex evokes the architecture of the longhouse, traditional dwelling of the Iroquois people, who include the Huron-Wendat Nation. Combining contemporary comfort and cultural experience, the establishment warmly welcomes guests to its 55 4-star rooms and suites, worthy of the legendary hospitality of the Huron-Wendat.

This project is a unique alliance between 4-star accommodations and a museum experience that takes visitors on an exceptional voyage through the traditions and contemporary culture of [...]

The Trojan House / Jackson Clements Burrows Architects

The initial idea was to challenge the conventional ‘box on the back’ type addition with a sculptural form born of site restraints; such as the ResCode setbacks along the south boundary; the ideal internal programmatic arrangement, the desire to maintain as much back yard as possible and inspired by the rooftop topography of hips and valleys of the existing Edwardian house. Three kids bedrooms and a bathroom were placed cantilevering above the garden, above a large living space below. This programme was then wrapped in a seamless timber skin, covering roof, windows and walls.

© Emma Cross

This creative part office/studio, part recreational getaway is designed by Rockefeller Partners Architects. It’s located at the base of a large pine tree in the backyard of the house which belongs to an artist and lover of nature. The treehouse is 170 square feet and is perched twelve feet off the ground. Though modest in size, the plan is efficient and allows for a studio space/living area and a toilet room. Deep-oiled wood siding, mahogany windows, and a Rheinzink roof were chosen for their natural qualities and rich palette. The treehouse features a fireplace and nature’ views so it is a great place to “create”. Built in a dense forest the Ring House is a glass box wrapped in horizontal stripes of burnt cedar. The stripes refer to both to the bands of glass and wood and the panoramic 360 degree views of the forest from the interior spaces. The burnt cedar pays homage to the forest in a clever way, creating a raw, earthy contrast to the sleek glass and steel glazing. By eliminating most of the interior walls, one experiences the forest from all sides. To look at the house is to look through the house to the forest beyond. This creates the illusion as if the trees themselves were growing through the house. Yet the horizontal bands create a contrast in pattern to the verticality of the forest with magnetic effect.

Built in a dense forest the Ring House is a glass box wrapped in horizontal stripes of burnt cedar.

International Convention of Architecture 2010 in Budapest

It’s clad in brown/black volcanic stone, IPE wood, white stucco and steel. There is quite a big pool near by and a terrace above it. They both are protected from sun and neighbors with two massive oak trees. There is also a cool intimate garden of palm trees that could be viewed as from living room as from dining and family areas. The site’s topography wasn’t ideal so there are a lot of subtle level changes between rooms that only add interest to the interior design.
