Chuck van Zyl
Using modular systems, a variety of modern analog synthesizers and sequencers, and operating at an emotion and enthusiastic pitch, Chuck van Zyl realizes music that possesses as much the buzz and crackle of electricity as it does the frigid black of space. From his instrument’s storm force of sound comes delightful throbbing bass lines, echo-warping chimes and a mystery machine pulse, against which Zyl sways and plays synthesizer strings, Mellotron choir and full-blooded melodies. Staccato synthesizer blips interlock and pound out might sequencer patterns, yet this mechanical rigidity is somehow softened — as lines of dancing arpeggios pump up against tuneful leads and ethereal harmonic progressions. Disarmingly quiet passages reduce the level of density and energy with insinuating modulations and vaporous aural forces. Anyone in love with Spacemusic and its specific poetry will want to hear this concert.
Mike Hunter
Music with Space radio show host and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Hunter uses the name Ombient to make live music befitting of any situation. During his many concert outings, he has realized a range of performances — from those of great potent down to the more ethereal and diffuse. Possessed by a unique atmospheric sensitivity, he is currently exploring the sonic territory of Spacemusic’s 1970s Berlin-School — utilizing a number of classic electronic instruments, among them a substantial three cabinet “Synthesizers Dot Come” modular system.
The Lancasphere concert series welcomes Harrisburg guitarist Joe Olnick as we celebrate the release of his album, Bright Paintings (to be released on May 8, 2015). The show will include live musical performances, an exhibit of the paintings that inspired the album, a Q&A with Joe, and a special opening set by ambient artist George Wallace.

Joe Olnick

Harrisburg guitarist Joe Olnick found inspiration for his new album in an unexpected place: at a friend’s art exhibit. Olnick attended an exhibit by artist and musician Stew Bradley of Lancaster last spring.
“Stew and I were in a band together a few years ago, and when I heard he was having an exhibit of paintings, I had to check it out,” Olnick explains. “I was blown away by what he had been creating, especially with his magnificent use of brilliant colors in this series of paintings.”
Olnick offered to compose an instrumental piece that Bradley could play at his next exhibit. “I wanted the music to enhance the paintings, and not distract from them, but also add to the experience for those going through an exhibit.”
Bradley sent Olnick pictures of the new paintings, and he came up with sounds and musical themes that he looped and layered, hoping to mimic the bright layers of color in the buildings and landscapes. What started out as one ambient piece soon evolved into many, and the album Bright Paintings was born.
Here are two songs from Bright Paintings along with the artwork by Stew Bradley that inspired them:
Lancasphere 6 represents one of the most important missions of the Lancasphere concert series: providing a platform for experimental and ambient artists to explore their creativity in front of an interested audience. Artists from both of our featured acts, Birds of the Cloud Forest and Noite, have been a part of previous Lancasphere concerts and prepared special performances built exclusively for this show. In addition to these two acts, I opened the concert with an encore presentation of RiverSound Project, a photography and music collaboration with photographer Matthew Lester that I recently performed during an installation at The Arch in Lancaster.

Birds of the Cloud Forest

I started thinking about devices that would play themselves while traveling though Europe in 1978. I kept a journal and drew a picture of one device that appeared in a dream. When I returned to West Philly I started to accumulate parts to build these devices. Soon after, my energy went into rehabbing a newly purchased house and into playing oboe in a jazz and world music trio. Gradually the boxes of parts got pushed further back down the to do list. The dreams stayed alive and supplied enough energy to drag those boxes along on four house moves, and resist their getting dumped in the trash. About four years ago Jason Mundok asked me to do some incidental music for the [Lancaster’s] 24 Hour Plays. With parenting down to a dull roar it seemed appropriate to dig around in the attic and see what was in those boxes. I pieced together some things that were the beginnings of what I am doing now.
As a homage to Frank Zappa’s piece “Toads of the Short Forest” I capriciously called the first performance “Birds of the Cloud Forest” which over time took on its own meaning. I look at the devices that play themselves as the “cloud”, a loose collection of sound molecules that do not have a defined shape or rhythm. At the moment the cloud includes three guitars that are strummed automatically and two 1980’s synthesizers. The birds are the instruments that are actively played while the cloud chugs along under its own steam. Instruments include oboe, a bamboo clarinet (inexplicably in A-flat), recorders, and an assortment of whistles. For the March 21st performance we have added an another bird, local guitarist Steve Bridgeman. Steve and I last played together in a quartet in the early 1990s. His vision and virtuosity add a unique birdsong into the cloud forest.
Another addition for this performance will be visuals some of which will be created on the spot in real time. Nancy Baum makes drawings using household materials and inks on a drawing board that will be projected as a back drop to the music. Included will be a video of shadow play; a drawing in 3D. – Tim Baum 3/8/15

Noite is a post modern minimalist ambient duo featuring Kyle Yuditsky and Nick Christenson. They performed a pseudo improvised set utilizing a myriad of electronic instruments and consumer electronics. Noite’s performance was complemented by a variety of eclectic projected visuals compiled by Yuditskous.
Christenson and Yuditsky have both performed during our Evolution of Sound experimental improvisation concerts and each continue to release experimental and ambient music through their own projects: Christenson as Svið Vor and Yuditsky as Karl Yuditskous.

Here Inside

Here Inside performs atmospheric and ambient art rock. The band formed in early 2014 to develop and perform two concept albums called Brave Road (Part I & Part II). Read more about that project here. Members include Michael Bridgman (bass), Randy Bucksner (saxophone and flute), Anne Kirby (vocals), Kelly McClain (drums), and Jason Mundok (keyboard and vocals).

Hello Counselor

Hello Counselor is a collective of local musicians who perform all improvised sets of experimental music. In various forms, the group performs weekly at improv sessions at the home of Lancaster guitarist and concert promotor, Scott Bookman. The Lancasphere 4 configuration includes Matt Blank (drums) from Slackwater News, Scott Bookman(guitar), Michael Bridgman (bass) from Here Inside, Ron Leik (guitar), and Travis Spurley (sax) from Shrimpboat.

Here’s how it works:

Mike Bridgman, Aaron Gagne, and Scott Bookman performing at Lancasphere One. The first musician will perform five minutes of completely improvised music. The second musician will join the first musician and the duo will perform for another five minutes. Then, the first musician will leave the stage and the third musician will join the second musician.
This rotation will continue with two musicians performing at a time until all ten musicians have performed. At that time each musician will rejoin the performance every two minutes until the entire group is playing at once. The music will be performed continuously and will evolve as each musician brings his/her influence.
