This spring will be a little different. Wearing a mask and all the pollen that comes with spring will cause you to adjust your grooming routine. Washing and conditioning your beard will be key. Here are a few grooming tips to help you maintain an epic beard during change in seasons.

Exfoliate

Scrub away the dead and dry skin on your face that the winter cold has left behind. This is the root cause of beard dandruff, skin irritation, and ingrown hairs. Purify the skin with a natural detox. Removing the dead skin will help promote heathier and fuller beard growth.

Condition

During the warmer months, your skin will produce more of its natural oil called sebum. Just because more natural oil is produced, this doesn’t replace good conditioning. Producing more sebum will lead us to the next tip…

Deodorize & Clean

Wearing a mask will cause your beard to be dirty and dry. The pollen in the air will also add to uncleanliness of your beard. Warm weather can lead to your skin cooling itself (sweat). Warmer weather may also cause more outdoor activity (more sweat). More sweat, more sebum, and the added component of a mask will lead to more impurities in your beard and will cause a strong beard odor. Cleaning your beard more often during warmer weather is key. You should use a very mild soap or natural that won’t dry out your beard and mild enough you can use daily. Clean your beard more often!

Brush and Comb

This will serve multiple purposes. One, by bushing and combing more often, you rid your beard of debris and impurities that are more present during outdoor activities and the presences of pollen. Two, combing and brushing more often will stimulate circulation which will produce more hair growth.

Following these tips will help you get your beard ready for warmer weather. Continue the beard greatness all year, no matter the season

That same silicone-based product must be applied to keep it looking healthy. Now we are locked into a cleaning cycle that is damaging to your hair and to your skin. The hidden truth is that the more you use, the more damage it causes and the more money we spend trying to keep the cycle going.
More

Silicone is found in most commercial products like soap, lotion, body wash, make up, shampoo, hair gel, after shave, and even in products like cooking utensils, paint, sealant, brake fluid and insulation. That’s right! Paint, brake fluid, and insulation are made with the same ingredients that you use on your skin and in your hair.

Why does the beauty industry use this ingredient in products that can be absorbed into your skin and coat your hair? It is cheap and it extends the shelf life of products making more profit to the manufacturer. Silicone has no benefit to your hair or beard and can be dangerous if absorbed in your skin. So, why is it used?

Silicone is a polymer that is like plastic or rubber. It can come in a solid, powder and gas. Silicone is also resistant to oxidation and helps prevents the growth of bacteria.

When used in shampoo and other hair products (conditioners, beard oils, gels, and creams), silicone coats your hair trapping in moisture giving it a shiny appearance. However, since silicon is a coating on your hair and repels water, it is extremely hard to clean. A stronger soap is needed to clean it leaving your hair dry and brittle. The hidden truth is that the more you use, the more damage it causes and the more money we spend trying to keep the cycle going.

Natural and organic ingredients like Shea butter and Mango butter heals damaged hair, attracts, and locks in moisture, and is gentle to clean. There is also some added benefits like vitamins, fatty acids and minerals. Vitamins A, C, and E which are known to stimulate hair growth, improves and heals hair and skin, protects against UV, and locks in moisture naturally. Omega’s 9 and 6 contain hair soften properties, stimulate thicker and longer hair growth, reduce wrinkles, and boost immunity.

These properties and many more are the reason why Shea butter and Mango butter are the staple in most of our products (butters, soaps, aftershave...). There are a host of other benefits, but we just listed a few. We do not sue any silicone in our products! Do we have your attention? This is the truth behind silicone and the secrete big business want to keep hidden. Silicone is a cheap facade and does not do anything for your hair or your skin.

It may seem like a trend, but using natural and organic skin is more beneficial to your skin, hair, your overall health and the environment. The products we use on our skin are absorbed into our bodies. Some ingredients used in commercial and mass produced soaps are harsh and are manufactured to not break down and prolong shelf life. These ingredients have been shown to cause issues to our skin, body, and overall health.

When we decide to focus on our overall health, we usually start with what we eat. We decided to eat cleaner, cut out bad foods and add exercise to our daily life. Your body is no different. Synthetic ingredients have been shown to cause many health issues by being absorbed into the blood stream.

Things to avoid

Sodium lauryl sulfate is often found in shampoo and body wash, but studies have shown that it can lead to skin irritation by disrupting your natural skin barrier.

Parabens are another synthetic chemical to avoid. They mimic estrogen, according to the FDA, and are found in many moisturizers, shampoos, shaving gels, and more. According to Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, parabens can cause excess or abnormal breast cell growth.

Synthetic fragrances are found in nearly every skincare product. According to federal law, companies do not need to disclose the chemicals in their fragrance mixtures. Allergens and hormone disruptors are often among the list of chemicals.

Learn more on what to avoid here

Benefits of using a natural body wash

Plant based ingredients have an added bonus, not only do they contain natural ingredients that are beneficial to your skin, it also has natural occurring vitamins, fatty acids that benefits the body. You also reduce, if not eliminate skin irritation.

Aloe Vera leaf juice is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins that helps protect your skin. Aloe Vera has also been shown to neutralize the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, repair your skin from existing UV damage, and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

It also helps reduce and heal skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis.

Safflower Oil contains both omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids, that benefit overall skin functions and improve skin health and skin hydration. Safflower Oil also fights acne and prevents wrinkles.

Grapeseed Oil has excellent antimicrobial properties that is proven to treat acne outbreaks. Grapeseed Oil helps improve your skin's elasticity, and softness, and prevents aging.

No oily residue! Made from vegetable origins, your skin will feel soft and hydrated, not greasy!

Easy to rinse! Your skin will not leave a scaly, dry feeling when you step out of the shower.

Very nice scent! Our scents come from essential oils and fragrances that are plant based, not alcohol based. Alcohol based scents are stronger and last longer, however, the addition of alcohol dries out your skin and may cause skin irritation.

One of the oldest men's grooming traditions is shaving with shave soap and a shave brush. For some, a quicker way of shaving has become priority due to convince. Others, however, have stayed loyal to the traditional way of shaving. Quality time shaving yields the best results and best benefit to your face. There are two components, the soap and the brush.

Advantages of using shave brush

When using shave soap, the best way to apply shave soap to the shaving area is using a shave brush. There are many types of shave brushes from boar bristles to synthetic brushes. Some types have more benefits than others, but in general, here are the benefits of using a quality shave brush.

Generates a rich and warm lather by whipping air into shaving cream or soap

Softens and lifts the facial hair off the face

Adds heat to the skin during the shaving process which helps open pores and lubricate the skin

Gently exfoliates the surface of the skin to rid it of dead cells

By virtue of its numerous bristles, a shaving brush is the best way to create a luxurious lather rather then simply using your hands. A rich lather will protect and lubricates the skin. The friction of the bristles on your face as you lather up, softens the beard and opening pores. A shave brush also helps guide the direction of your whiskers as they loosen up in their pores, preparing them for the blade. Using a shaving brush is also adds moisture to the face and beard when shaving. This is a far more efficient method of wetting your skin than cupping water in your hands and bringing it to your face when shaving, which is what you have to do without a brush. Finally, the brush provides gentle exfoliation and removes dead surface cells, something that fingers alone cannot do.

Advantages of using shave soap

Just like the shave brush, there are countless choices of shave soaps. The best option is to go natural and organic. Using natural and organic soaps will not contain any harsh chemicals or detergents which will cause skin irritation, shave rash, and bumps among other skin and health issues. Using a natural shave soap with plant based ingredients will host a number of moisture and skin healing properties

Oat Protein and Wheat Protein conditions and moisturizes the skin. Also prevent skin irritation.

Sunflower oil contains vitamins A, B, C, and E, conditions and strengthens and moisturizes hair, prevents hair loss, softens and protects hair.

Vegetable Glycerin adds a protective layer to the skin. Also adds in hydrating the skin and prevent dryness which will help prevent shave rash and prevent bumps.

Honey is full of antioxidants that help with wrinkles and prevents aging. It is also an excellent moisturizer and fights acne, soothes and heals skin after shaving.

Shea Butter softens skin for a closer and easier shave. Shea Butter has anti-inflammatory properties that heals the skin after shaving and also prevents skin irritation.

When the temperature rises, most men think that this is the time when the beard comes off. Sometimes it’s the fear of a itchy beard. Some fear that having a beard means they won't be able to enjoy all that summer has offer (pools, sandy beaches, and sweating). Following these tips will help you keep an epic beard all summer long.

Protect it

Your beard is a natural built in sunscreen for your face, but your beard needs protection also. Enjoying the summer means time well spent outside in the elements. Prolonged exposure to sunlight will dry out your beard and can dull its color, taking away from it’s luster.

Tip: A high quality beard butter that contains Shea butter is an excellent choice. Shea butter has an SPF of 4-6. You can also use a spray on sunscreen to help protect your beard. Remember to clean your beard thoroughly with a beard soap or wash. Use a mild soap specifically designed for beards. Washing 2 to 3 times a week during the summer will keep bacteria, sweat, and the outside elements from destroying your beard.

Keep it soft

Your facial hair is more course than the hair on the rest of your body. This can lead to itchiness and irritation if not maintained. During the summer, your skin can become irritated due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Using a quality beard oil and conditioner will remedy the problem. In the summer months when the temperature rises and sweat occurs more often, washing your face is required more often.

Tip: Use a beard oil and/or a beard conditioner after you wash. You can also use milder soaps that won’t dry out your beard. Conditioning and moisturizing your beard will pay huge dividends all summer. The exposure to sunlight will rob your beard of the the rich nutrients it needs.

Take care of the skin underneath

The skin underneath your beard is often overlooked. If not attended to, it will become dry and flaky, cause irritation that can lead to bump’s, beard itch, and dandruff. During the hot summer months, it is likely that you sweat more that will lead to a build up of dirt and bacteria. Time spent in the pool, the heat from the grille, and the sand from the beach will expose your beard to dirt and bacteria and can cause damage to your beard, so more attention is needed to this overlooked area.

Tip: Exfoliate your face, cheeks, and neck using a medium bristle brush, loofah, or exfoliating sponge. This will remove dead skin cells from the skin underneath your beard. Exfoliating will also remove dirt and bacteria from hair follicles that may cause ingrown hairs, bumps, or irritation. You should exfoliate your beard no more than once a week. Exfoliating your beard frequently will lead to breakage. Remember to keep your skin moisturized and condition by using beard oil and or beard butter.

Stay hydrated

Often neglected regardless of what time of year it its. It is important to stay hydrated. If your spending more time outdoors, spend more time hydrating.

Tip: Aim to drink 6 to 8-ounce glasses of water eight times a day. Staying hydrated will keep your skin healthy and prevent hair breakage.

Feed It

A healthy beard requires nutrients. These nutrients are stripped from your beard when you are exposed to direct sunlight and the outside elements. Sweat build up will also dry out your beard.

Tip: Use a good beard conditioner that has fatty acids, vitamins, and other nutrients your beard needs. Our Beard Butter is a perfect leave in conditioner fill with these vitamins and nutrients.

Water Is Your Lifeline

Often over looked and dismissed, staying hydrated is essential to overall health. Water is required by every cell in your body and is vital to all body functions. This includes beard growth. A strand of hair is made up of 25% water. Hair follicles need nutrients and vitamins to produce hair. These nutrients are carried throughout the body by water. We often take being hydrated for granted by not drinking enough water. Here is why water is so crucial to your overall health.

Brain Function

Water makes up 70-75% of brain tissue. Studies show that dehydration alters the regulation of cerebral circulation. This increases oxidative stress and impacts cognitive functions. This is apparent when we see athletes suffer from dehydration, it is difficult for them to walk or continue running, their eyesight is impaired, and motor skills are diminished. Staying hydrated will not only help in cognitive functions, but will improve concentration, improve memory, reduce stress, and will also help in preventing and relieving headaches.

Body Functions

Drinking proper amounts of water will improve digestion. Water along with other liquids help break down food so that your body can absorbed the nutrients. Nutrients are absorbed by the intestines, and then circulated throughout the body in the form of blood. This also helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Water also removes waste materials by filtering out waste through the kidneys. The waste is then discarded through urination. Water also regulates body temperature.

Muscles and Fat Loss

Muscle tissue are made up of 75% water. Water helps form the structures of protein and glycogen. When the body is dehydrated, the muscles are deprived of electrolytes resulting in cramps. As stated before, water helps deliver nutrients to cells, including the muscle cells. These nutrients and oxygen are needed to repair muscles when they are stressed and damaged during workouts or activities. Water will also increase the body’s ability to metabolize stored fat. Drinking cold water will help burn calories because the body will expend energy, or calories, by heating the water for digestion.

Yes, Your Beard Too

Drinking proper amounts of water will not only help rid the body of toxins, but also rid the skin of toxins. Water delivers oxygen to cells, including skin cells. Skin cells are exposed to a harsh and dry environment. Water helps keep these skin cells healthy, and full of nutrients resulting in healthier and clearer skin. These same nutrients and vitamins are also carried to hair cells and hair follicles by water. A hair stand is made up of 25% water. Staying hydrated improves blood circulation that delivers vitamins and nutrients to hair follicles. This will help stimulate hair growth and strengthen existing hair.

Application

Drink more water. The recommended daily intake of may vary, but a good rule of thumb is the 8 x 8 rule. This simply means drinking eight 8 oz glasses of water a day on average. This may vary depending on ambient temperature and activity levels. Don’t wait until you are thirsty, your body has a delayed reaction and you are already dehydrated. Drink water throughout the day, even when you are not thirsty. You will start to see an overall improvement in your overall health, skin, and in your beard.

Several studies have shown that your beard can be dirty. A dirty beard can carry bacteria, have an unpleasant odor, and cause skin irritation. Should I shave or should I tell a loved one to shave?

No, don’t do it! Here’s why?

A dirty beard is nothing to be afraid of nor is it a reason to shave. It all comes down to one word, Hygiene! Google defines hygiene as a condition or practice conducive to maintaining health and preventing disease, especially through cleanliness. Bad hygiene or bad practices will cause your beard to be dirty, carry bacteria, smell bad, and be unhealthy. Good hygiene or good practices will leave your beard clean, bacteria free, healthy, soft, and with a pleasant scent. Your teeth also carry bacteria and dirt if you don’t practice good hygiene. Your mouth will have a very unpleasant scent and your teeth can start to decay if good hygiene is not practiced. Your body will have an unpleasant odor because of dirt and bacteria build up if proper hygiene is not practiced. Your beard is no different. With good hygiene, your mouth, face, body, and beard will be clean, free from bacteria, and free from an awful smell.

Bad hygiene practices will leave your beard a mangy and smelly mess. The outside elements are filled with dirt and debris. Depending time of year, pollen and dust may be common. A man may work and make a living outside in the elements or around things they may cause his beard to be dirty. A day at the beach or in the pool, or even cutting the grass my expose your beard to unhealthy elements. Food left behind in your beard will cause an unpleasant smell and accumulate bacteria if not cleaned. All these things will cause your beard to build bacteria and leave an unpleasant smell if proper hygiene is not practiced.

Good hygiene practices will make sure your beard is healthy and clean. Just as you would take care of yourself by brushing your teeth and taking a shower, your beard needs the same attention. As mentioned before, your beard is exposed to many different elements even food. Like any other part of your body, your beard needs to be cleaned and maintained. You wouldn’t go weeks without taking a shower (hopefully), you shouldn’t good weeks without cleaning your beard. You need to apply deodorant, and lotion to maintain healthy skin and prevent unwanted body odor. You need to apply beard oil and/or beard butter to maintain a healthy beard.

This article is designed to educate you on why you should use natural products made with natural and organic ingredients instead of synthetic products made with harsh chemicals, detergents, and dyes. Many people are making the move to natural products, here’s why. What you apply to your skin and put in your hair is absorbed into the body. Natural and organic ingredients have many benefits for your skin, hair, and the overall health. Synthetic ingredients when applied and absorbed into the body may have many harmful side effects to your skin and hair. Some ingredients found in synthetic products are toxic and can alter the chemistry of the body leading to many health issues.

When choosing a soap or body wash, be cautious of the ingredients. Know the side-effects they may have. Many ingredients found in soaps and body wash are synthetic and are by products from other chemical processes. They are cheap to manufacture and add color, shelf life, clean-ability, and the rich and luxurious sudsy lather. Although these ingredients appear to improve skin or hair, they are harmful. These are some of the most common ingredients that are found in synthetic soaps and other products and why you should avoid them.

Synthetic ingredients to avoid

Parabens

Parabens are a group of chemicals that help preserve the shelf life of products. Parabens are found in soap, makeup, body wash, shampoo, and lotions. They are cheap to manufacture and help increase the profit margin. Parabens can imitate estrogen in the body by changing the hormonal balance. Parabens have also been linked to breast cancer. They have also been proven to dry out your skin and cause skin irritation. Some common parabens are; methylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, and ethylparabens.

Phthalates

Phthalates [ /tha – late/ ] are synthetic chemicals that are used to make plastics in cosmetics more flexible and pliable. This helps the chemicals stick to your skin. Phthalates have been shown to be dangerous to children and cause birth defects. Phthalates can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and the reproductive system when absorbed into the skin. These chemicals can be found in toys, wallpaper, car seats, and vinyl shower curtains, deodorants, lotions, and hair spray.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates

Sodium Lauryl Sulfates or SLS is an emulsifier that allows products to “foam”. This is where the rich, sudsy lather comes from. Commonly found in soaps, shampoos, body washes, toothpastes, and detergents. SLS is a toxic byproduct. Some variations may be listed as sodium dodecyl sulfate, sulfuric acid, monododecyl ester, sodium salt, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and aquarex methyl. These products when inhaled or absorbed into the skin will cause eye irritation, nausea, and skin irritation. It will also cause negative effects in the kidneys, liver and nervous system.

BHT

BHT is short for butylated hydroxytoluene. These synthetic chemicals are antioxidants that are also used to extend shelf life. BHT’s is absorbed by the skin and have been found to cause liver damage and skin irritation. Commonly found in moisturizers and creams.

Alcohol

Alcohols like ethanol, isopropyl, and methanol alcohols are used in synthetic creams to make creams lighter and help other synthetic ingredients penetrate your skin. It is also used as a preservative. Alcohol has been shown to cause skin dryness, skin irritation and breakouts.

Natural ingredients provide the same functions but are naturally derived from plants. When applied to the skin, they can help clean bacteria, heal scars and wounds, hydrate and moisturize the skin. There is an added benefit when natural ingredients are absorbed into the skin, they work with the natural chemistry of the body instead of against it. Natural ingredients have been proven to prevent heart disease, lower cholesterol levels, boost the immune system, improve brain function and blood glucose levels. These are some of the natural ingredients we use in our body wash and other products.

What ingredients to look for

Shea Butter

Shea Butter has a concentration of naturally found fatty acids and vitamins that heal the skin, heal scars, and help hydrate and moisturize the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and has many benefits for your hair. When absorbed into the skin, it creates a natural barrier that seals in moisture.

Honey

Honey has anti-fungal properties and have been shown to boost the immune system and help alleviate allergies. Honey is packed with antioxidants and help prevent heart disease. It also has healing and moisturizing benefits for your skin, improve healing, kill germs, and prevent infection. It is also used as a preservative.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide is an inert earth mineral use as a thinking agent. It also is a natural sunscreen and is great for sensitive skin.

Vegetable Glycerin

How To Prevent Beard Bumps

First, we need to understand what causes beard bumps and skin irritation.

Skin Irritation and Dryness

Skin irritation can be caused by a reaction to a detergent, dye, fragrance, and dryness. During the early stages of beard grown, many will experience irritation due to new hair growth. In this stage of beard growth, it is important to keep your skin moisturized and condition. Protecting the skin is key. Moisturizing and conditioning the skin will prevent dryness and redness and will also treat the skin as new growth develops. Dry skin clogs pores, clogged pores will lead to pimples and break outs.

Ingrown Hairs

Beard bumps can also be caused from ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are cause from clogged pores that block the hair from growing straight. A dull razor and or shaving against the grain will also cause ingrown hairs. Products the cause the skin to be dry (like alcohol and some artificial ingredients) will also cause ingrown hairs. Dry skin clogs pores and prevent natural hair growth.

Now that we know the cause, what do we do about it? Here are a few solutions to prevent beard bumps:

Exfoliating the skin will scrub away the dirt and dead skin which my cause the pores to clog. You should exfoliate your beard at least once a week. Continue this practice as your beard grows.

Use natural ingredients. Natural ingredients will work with the skin instead of against it. Artificial ingredients, detergents, and dyes can lead to dryness and dandruff, and skin irritation. Always test products for allergens fist.

Moisturize and Condition your skin. Dry skin clogs up pores. Keeping your skin moisturized will improve circulation and prevent redness. Use a quality beard oil, balm and or butter.

Wash your beard once every week. Use a natural mild soap to prevent skin irritation and dryness.

Use Witch Hazel rather than rubbing alcohol. Witch Hazel is an excellent astringent but does not cause dryness and is not harsh on skin as rubbing alcohol.

When Is The Best Time To Shave

The best time to shave, rather its in the morning or at night is after a hot shower. Hot water does wonders to the body. Warm water helps increase blood circulation in skin. Warm water opens the pores on the skin. As your pores open, the skin relaxes which gives easier access to the hair follicles. This allows for a closer shave and prevents the likeliness of nicks and cuts to the skin. Warm water also softens hair. Softer hair means an easier shave and less passes needed by the razor. Less passes by the razor means less skin irritation.

How to get the best shave:

After your face is clean and steamed in the shower, exfoliate your skin with a luffa or exfoliating brush. This will loosen up stubborn hair and prepare skin for shaving. Removing dirt will make for a cleaner shave and less passes with the razor.

Next, apply a pre-shave oil. Pre-shave oil will add a protective layer on your skin and makes the razor pass over the skin easier. A good pre-shave oil will draw moisture into your skin that will help protect against the razor.

Next, lather up with a quality shave cream or shave soap. Opt to go natural as artificial ingredients, dyes, and detergents will dry out skin and cause irritation. Harsh chemicals will also cause hair bumps as hair follicles can become damaged and clogged.

Always shave with the grain. Shaving against the grain will cause irritation, cuts, and beard bumps. Shaving with a quality razor should only take one or two passes with the grain. Less passes means less irritation.

Apply a quality, natural aftershave. Natural and organic aftershave will draw extra moisture to your skin. Fatty acids and vitamins will heal and aid in repairing your skin after you shave. Witch Hazel is and astringent that is not as harsh as alcohol but it serves the same purpose. Witch Hazel effectively cleans with out causing dryness and burning.

Your beard takes time, patience, and care to grow. You should take time and take care of it. With all the information available, it may be overwhelming knowing where to start and what to do. We have compiled a list of ten essential tips. This list of tips will help you along your journey and will give you a good foundation to build your beard care routine around. Each person and every beard will be different. You can adapt it to fit your individual needs.

Know your line

Having the right line is a key factor to an epic beard. Your jawline should not follow your jaw but should be at an angle to your Adam’s apple. Your cheek line will very on the way your beard grows. To achieve maximum volume and growth, leave your cheek line as high as possible. Most men will experience some thinning in this area. Give it time to fill in. If you are looking for a more defined line, there are may styles to choose from. You can go for a straight line, curved line, or faded, the choice is up to your personal style and preference. Rugged Fellow has some interesting reading on a good beard line.

Use a comb

A wooden comb will pay dividends on a healthy beard. A good wooden comb will distribute oil evenly over your beard while gently de-tangling knots. Avoid plastic or metal combs, plastic bushes and metal picks when possible. The microscopic edges on plastic and metal will cause breakage and damage your hair. See article on why you should use a wooden comb here. A good practice is to keep a small pocket comb on your person or in the car. This will come in handy when eating your favorite messy food, styling on the go, or even after blowing your nose (you'll quickly find how brittle Kleenex is).

Eat better

Often overlook, this is a main component in growing a healthy beard. Your body needs food to operate properly. Your muscles, eyes, organs, and hair follicles all function better when your body has the right fuel. A healthy diet of rich in Omega-3's, vitamins A, B and E, and fatty acids will strengthen hair follicles and improve blood circulation which will promote health, thick, and even new hair growth. Supplements and vitamins such as biotin can be taken. You shouldn't underestimate a healthy diet and exercise. You can literally eat your way to a better beard.

Keep it clean

Do not use hair shampoo or regular face soap on your beard! Shampoo’s and soap contain harsh detergents, dyes, sulfates, and alcohol. All these ingredients will dry and damage your beard. Not only does it damage the hair, but it will also damage the skin underneath causing skin irritation, beard dandruff, brittleness, breakage, hair loss, and bumps. Use soaps and beard wash that are designed for your beard. These type of products will clean your beard all while locking in moisture. Depending on how much you are exposed to the elements (outside, sweat, dirt, etc...), you should wash your beard every other day. Try to avoid over washing your beard. More on this in Tip# 6 Creating a Routine. See article on How To Wash My Beard here.

Use oils, butters, and balms

Oils, Butters, and Balms should have their place in your routine. We have several articles describing the function of each in detail (Beard Oil, Oils, Butters, and Balms) Here is a quick recap: function of Beard Oil is to moisturize, Beard Butter is a conditioning agent, Beard Balm will provide style while offering some conditioning properties. A healthy beard (and the skin underneath) must be moisturized, conditioned, and fed nutrients found in natural oils and butters.

Create a good routine

An epic beard takes time to grow and time to keep groomed. Quality time should be spend grooming your beard and developing a routine that works for you and your beard. Everyone is different, and every beard is different and will have different needs. You should commit some time each day to your beard. Every routine will be different, but every routine should include some aspect the following;

Wash your beard every so often. Depending on how much you sweat, exposed to dirt and the elements. You should wash your beard 1-2 times a week using products designed for beards. If you need to wash more often, use milder, natural soaps and keep your beard conditioned. Try not to over wash your beard as this may cause your beard to dry out and cause skin irritation. Remember to rinse well! See article How To Wash My Beard here.

Use Oils, Butters, and Balms. Oils and Butters should be applied to a slightly damp beard. Recommended use is only once a day. Both can be use together. Oil first than lock in moisture and conditioning using butter. Balm’s should be used sparingly to give your beard hold and style. Key to remember using oil’s, butter’s, and balms, a little goes along way! Too much of a good thing can lead to some issues, read article here.

Do not trim every day. Give your beard time to grow. A rule of thumb is to trim your beard once or twice a month to keep it tame.

Comb and bush using wooden combs and boar bristled bushes to keep your beard tame. This is more important depending on your workplace and lifestyle. This should be done every day.

Exfoliate your beard using an exfoliating sponge or luffa is key to keep your beard and skin clean and will also combat bumps and skin irritation. Removing dead skin will help strengthen hair follicles and will also improve blood flow. Can be done once a week.

If you use a hair dryer, use sparingly as heat will damage and dry out your beard. Condition well after heating. Can be used once or twice a month.

Use right tools

Knowing what tools to use is half the battle. A wooden comb and boar bristle brush should be used everyday. Use electric trimmers or clippers in between visits to your barber. These will come in handy in keeping your neck and cheek line clean. Sheers are a good way to clean up the stay beard hairs. These are all the tools that you need. No need to buy expensive clipper’s, sheers, or any other tools. Some electric clippers and pair of sheers will keep you sharp between visits to the barber. A comb and brush will keep you styled. It is also important to keep your tools clean! Using cleaner and oil on your sheers and clippers is essential to keeping them sharp and long lasting. Wash your comb and brush often with your beard wash or beard soap. This will stop build up of oil and dirt. Use disinfectant spray on your clippers to prevent bacteria build up.

Its OK to color your beard

Its OK to use coloring on your beard. It is totally a personal choice. Some barbers and stylist offer this as part of the service. If you chose to color your beard, there are a few things to keep in mind. There is a fear to using beard coloring, but these tips will help you overcome that fear and keep your beard healthy.

Chose a color that is close to your natural hair. If you have a ginger beard, you probably don’t want to go jet black. This may take some time to find out which color works best for you. It may be good practice to error on a shade that is lighter rather than on a shade that is darker.

Follow the instructions. Don’t let it sit too long in your beard. Be sure to rinse out well! Do not use regular shampoo or soap to wash. Use beard specific washes and soaps. Only use as directed.

When dying your beard, do not over due it. A good rule of thumb is to only color your beard once a month. The chemicals in the dye will cause the beard to become dry and brittle.

This brings us the most important component, moisturize and condition! You should use beard wash or bead soap to wash out the coloring. These specialized soaps will retain moisture in your beard. You should also use Beard Oil and Beard Butter to keep your beard moisturized and conditioned. The use of oil and butter will be more important when using coloring. While the coloring agents will strip your beard of moisture, and can possible damage the skin underneath, you can keep your beard and skin healthy by using butters and oils. Butters and Oils will lock in moisture, heal the skin underneath, combat brittleness, and keep your beard soft and healthy. These should already be a part of your routine but will have more importance and should hold a higher priority when using beard coloring.

Style

Find your style. There are tons of pictures and videos on different beard types and styles. The key is to find a beard style that is similar to the way your beard grows and then chose a style that you like. When you find a style you like, take that picture to a barber you trust. Take your time and let your beard grow and take your time finding a style you like. Here are a few links that may help you find your unique look.

Don’t skip the barber

Finding the right barber can be a challenge. You can find a good barber on social media and by word of mouth. Ask around and get recommendations. Once you find a barber you trust, develop a relationship and a dialog with your barber. Talk about your beard goals and style. Bring a picture of a style you like. This will help him paint a picture of your desired look and how he or she can help you on your journey. Remember, growing a beard is a process. As your beard grows and gets thicker, the way your barber cuts your beard will change depending on what you want to achieve. There will be growth phases and trim phases. Your barber will help you map out a plan that fits your goals. He or she should offer you sound advice and tips along the way.

Too Much of A Good Thing

Too much of any thing can be a bad thing. Too much water, too much food can cause some serious issues. This is also the case when applying beard oil, beard butter or beard balm. Applying too much beard oil can lead to an oily mess on your beard. Too much beard butter or balm will leave you beard botched in globs can also lead to skin irritation.

The function of Beard Oil is to hydrate and moisturize your beard. Beard Oil lacks the fatty acids and conditioning agents found in butters and some balms. Beard Oil will keep the skin underneath your beard moisturized. Some beard oils contain specific natural oils that will also help promote hair growth. While helping the skin, it will also strengthen hair follicles and make your beard soft and have a healthy shine. Too much oil can lead to skin irritation, bumps, and an oily beard.

How To: Only a small amount is needed. The thicker your beard, obviously, the more oil is needed. A few drops (5-10) on a modest beard should be plenty. Beard oil should be applied to a slightly damp beard.

The function of Beard Butter and Beard Balm is to condition and moisturize your beard. Butters and some balms contain natural butters (Shea, Mango, or Coco) that are packed with fatty acids and many other conditioning properties and nutrients. Butters are be designed to give your skin and beard the conditioning it needs. Balms will contain wax and are designed to give your beard some form and hold. Too much butter will cause skin irritation, bumps, and hair loss. Too much balm will lead to dry, brittle beard, skin irritation and bumps.

How To: A dime size amount is all that’s needed. Again, the thicker the beard, obviously, the more butter or balm may be needed. Butters should be applied to a slightly damp bard. Balms should be applied to a clean dry beard. Less balm is needed as it is a styling agent.

The added benefit of Beard Oil’s, Butter’s, and Balm’s are the scent they may be offered in. These scents (if natural) come from essential oils. If not natural, the scents are alcohol based. Beard Oil, Beard Balm, and Beard Butter should not be used as a cologne. The mistake of applying too much only to enhance the scent of your beard is a costly mistake. Remember, a little goes a long way! The goal of these products is to have healthy skin and a healthy beard.

Your beard may not be growing or not as healthy as you want it to be. There are eight common mistakes that may be destroying your beard. Learn how to avoid these mistakes and get the most out of your beard.
More

Here are 8 things that may be destroying your beard.

#1. Using regular shampoo or soap

Your beard has different needs and should be treated differently than your scalp. Normal hair shampoo and regular soap have harsh ingredients like detergents, sulfates, alcohol, and dyes. These ingredients could cause skin irritation which can lead to dandruff, beard itch, and even bumps. Beard breakage and brittleness, and even hair loss. Beard wash or Beard soaps are designed to be used on your bead.

#2. Using plastic combs, metal combs, or regular hair brushes

Metal and plastic when made contain small but sharp edges which will cause breakage. Metal and plastics will also draw moisture away from your beard as well as removing the beard oil your trying to apply. Hair brushes with plastic bristles will have the same effect on your beard. Wooden combs, picks and boar hair brushes should only be used.

#3. Not using beard oil and or beard butter

This is a given. Your beard needs to be conditioned, moisturized, and protected. Beard Oils, Beard Butters, and even some Beard Balms do just that. Conditioning the skin underneath and locking in moisture are key to a healthy beard. Good Beard Oils also contains vitamins and fatty acids that give your beard vital nutrients. Oils and butters should be used often.

#4. Not eating right

A healthy diet is too often overlooked. Your body must be fed to operate correctly, this includes your beard! To optimize your beard potential, your body must operate correctly, and your body’s chemistry must all function correctly. Your hair follicles, blood flow, and testosterone levels will depend on what its being fed.

#5. Washing your beard too often

Washing your beard too often, even using beard wash or beard soap will to more harm to your beard. Your beard is delicate and must be treated with care. Washing too often will cause dryness and brittleness. A good routine is to wash your beard once a week depending on your needs and exposure to elements.

#6. Stroking your beard (too often)

This one is hard to avoid! Touching your well-groomed mane while deep in though or just because can be a good thing. Too much of a good thing, however, will cause breakage and introduce germs, fungus, and bacteria from your hands into your beard.

#7. Incorrect trimming

Cutting too much off or starting an incorrect neck line or check line will destroy your beard. You should to a barber or stylist to get your beard trimmed properly. During that time between visits, you should follow what has already been given. Good communication between your barber is a must! He doesn’t have a clear picture of what you expect. So, having a good dialog, even bringing a picture will help you get the most out of your beard.

#8. Giving up too soon

Growing a beard takes time. It’s a process and a journey. Enjoy it! Your beard is unique to you. It will take time, patience, and care to reach your beards full potential.

For some, fall may be the opportune time to start growing a beard and start healthy grooming habits. For others, the fall may bring challenges for maintaining a healthy beard. Here are some tips for the fall beard care.

Conditioning & Hydration

This may be one of the most over looked tips in all of beard care. Keeping your beard conditioned during the fall will aid in the dreaded beard dandruff and beard itch. The skin underneath your beard my not get the conditioning and hydration it needs. Dry skin can lead to dandruff, itchiness, ingrown hairs, and will also lead to a dry and brittle beard. Keeping your beard hydrated will leave your beard soft, healthy and free from dandruff and will also protect against breakage. If you are starting your beard journey, conditioning your beard will help with the itch of new growth. A good beard oil or beard butter are made to handle that task.

A Good Wash

Washing your beard may be tricky for some but this is a very important element in a good grooming routine. Many have experienced that washing your beard leaves your beard dry and brittle. That’s because you’re not using the proper soap. Regular face soap contains harsher chemicals, while good for a clean face, will strip your beard of its natural oils. Using a soap that is made specifically for beards will aid in removing bacteria and cleaning your beard while at the same time aid in moisturizing and conditioning your skin and beard.

The frequency in which you wash your beard must also be taken in account. A good routine should involve washing your beard once a week. Some may require washing more often due to exposure and time spent the elements. If washing more frequently is needed a high-quality beard soap that won’t strip away oils and nutrients will be extremely important. We suggest using this beard soap.

Your beard needs food

A healthy beard, just like anything else, will require nutrients to grow. Hair follicles along with other elements of they body require vitamins and minerals. The best and easiest way to achieve this is to have a balanced diet. Foods rich in fatty acids, proteins, and healthy fats, omega 3’s, and vitamin C. You can also take supplements that contain these vitamins as well as Vitamin E, Inositol, Biotin (vitamin B7), and Niacin (vitamin B3). These nutrients will help develop natural testosterone levels, promote healthy and new hair growth, as well as promote stronger hair growth.

Wear A Mask!

If you live in a place where its mandated or just taking extra precaution Wearing a mask will help protect you and your family. A mask will not damage your beard. Follow the steps above and your beard will be as healthy as ever. Dedicate a little extra time to give your beard some TLC. Do not neglect your beard during these times. Even though your beard may be covered, it still needs attention and care. This is also a good time to let your beard grow out and allow it to reach it's potential.

Gentleman is from the Latin word “gentillils”. Similar is the French word gentilhomme (gentil=noble, courteous and homme=man). The term refers to a man from a reputable or noble family. Usually in reference to a royal family, knights, and baron's where the only men in society who would be able to have a moral compass.

History:

This term originated in Europe during the middle ages (500 -1500AD.) The term gentleman was used as a distinction to denote a man who comes from nobility or a good family. Only men of a certain social class, rank, race, or certain income could be called a gentleman. Men who fulfilled these conditions were considered to have ethics, morals, education, and honor. During this time period, these qualifications eliminated a vast majority of men from different races and class. Society considered only a certain few rich men would be able to have this moral standard.

During the 19th and 20th Century , social norms began to change along with the application of the title of a gentleman. The Industrial Revolution created a larger middle class of people with financial means to “buy”, an opportunity that was not present or available in previous years. This economic freedom changed how society viewed this class, it was now accepted by those of a higher class of men. Even as this new social class developed and expanded, the title of gentleman was still limited to men who could achieve a level economic status, education. As time, politics, and society progressed, the title of gentleman remained limited to a certain “group” of people. This “group” was only characterized by those who met criteria such as education, economic status, and race. Men who were of an ethnic background, recently freed slaves and other immigrants were not allowed the same opportunities. Society still perceived the title and it's qualities were only limited to the those who met the criteria. Only a man with money and education could have this moral standard, thus be called a gentleman.

Which brings us to the 21st century. What does it mean to be a gentleman today? Societal norms have change. Opportunities have become more available. Education is not limited to a certain social group. Does the term Gentleman still have the same qualifications? Only those who have had some sort of success can uphold some moral standard? Since the word was first used, there is a core belief, I believe, that encompasses every man regardless of social class, family history, or race; character. A man’s character should be the defining attribute of a man. Does a man keep his word? Is he responsible? Does he take care of his family? How does he treat others? How does he carry himself? These are the questions one needs to answer to be considered worthy of being called a gentleman, not what he wears, where he went to school, who is parents are, how much he makes, what he looks like, or where he lives. Character defines a man. Character separates a man from a child . Your character is your qualification of becoming a gentleman. So, are you a gentleman?

Beard dandruff is the white flaky substance that sometimes occurs when you brush or comb your beard. There are several causes of beard dandruff. Dry skin, irritation, water (hard water), soap or shampoo, fungus, and even the weather can all lead to dandruff. The common factor is not the beard itself, but the skin underneath, which is often neglected. Dandruff is made up of dead skin cells. This is the body’s reaction to the irritation from some of the causes above.

Many men around the world suffer from this problem as more and more men grow their beards. Here are a few simple steps you can add to your grooming routine will help eliminate this problem.

Use natural or mild soaps and shampoos. Harsh soaps will draw moisture away from the skin. Natural or mild soaps are composed of natural oils that work with the body. Harsh commercial soaps have an adverse effect on the skin.

Use a good beard oil. A good beard oil will condition and moisturized your skin and your bead. Natural beard oils are easily absorbed in the skin and hair. Good beard oils will have essential oils that combat fungus causing dandruff and antibacterial properties.

Exfoliate! Using a brush and comb or exfoliating sponge will help keep the flakes away.

Add these three simple steps to your routine will get rid of your bead dandruff. Having a good knowledge of your products and your skin will give you an advantage in your journey to an epic beard.

How often should I wash my beard? Ask 10 people, you will get 10 different answers. This article is a general guide that will help keep your beard on point.

Most men tend to error on the side of too often when it comes to washing their beard. Believe it or not, it’s not the best practice to wash your beard every day. Here’s why. Most soaps contain detergents and sulfates that will strip your beard of its natural oils (sebum). When these oils are drawn away from the hair, it becomes dry, hard, and brittle which will lead to breakage, split ends, and even lead to hair loss. Therefore, it is a good practice to use natural ingredients opposed to harsh artificial ones for the following reasons.

Natural oils are very similar to the oils produced by your skin and work in harmony with the body instead of against it.

Because they are similar to oils naturally produced by the body, they are easier absorbed and easier to clean.

Natural oils will keep your beard moisturized instead of stripping it of much needed nourishment.

Because natural oils used in natural products are easier to clean, and work with the body, the beard needs to be cleaned less often.

The harsh cycle of using regular soaps and shampoos. Regular soaps and shampoos contain sulfates, detergents, dyes, and silicone. These ingredients coat hair strands and are very hard to clean. This is why when you use facial soaps or shampoo's on your beard, the beard becomes brittle and dry. Using a soap or beard wash specifically for your beard will contain milder ingredients that will benefit your beard and the skin underneath. Milder ingredients are easier to clean and are easier on your skin. Natural ingredients are easily absorbed by your hair and skin which will keep your beard clean and soft while retaining your beards natural oils.

Every man is different. We have different beard and skin types, live in different environments, and we work in various places. Some men my work in an environment that requires them to spend more time on beard hygiene and washing more often.

A general rule of thumb is to wash your beard every other day or 2 – 3 times a week. If your need is different and requires washing more often, STAY AWAY from harsh soaps and shampoos. Use beard specific soaps that are free from harsh chemicals. A mild beard soap or wash should only be used to clean your beard. Know the products you use and know what’s in them! Get to know your beard and your skin type (oily, dry, etc...). Take notes on how your grooming routine affects your beard. Use a soap that is mild specifically designed for your beard.

The question that is causing the most confusion in the industry. Should I use natural products for my skin and hair? Is there a difference? What are the benefits or does it even matter? A lot of companies will argue that their products, full of ingredients that you can’t pronounce are better. Here is a look at why natural ingredients should be used on your hair and body.

There are many artificial ingredients that are found in shampoo. First, we will look at some of the ingredients in some popular cosmetics and the effects they have on the body.

Silicone

Silicone is a synthetic material that use found in most popular hair products (shampoos, conditioners, softeners, etc.). Silicones are a large base of materials recognized by names ending in “cone” like dimethicone or methicone copolyol. At its core, silicone has the consistency of plastic or rubber. Silicone coats the hair giving the hair the appearance of shine and softness. If used often, it builds up and is hard to clean. Because it coats the hair, its harder to clean the uses of harsher chemicals in soaps are needed. This causes all the natural oils produced by the skin and hair to be pulled away leaving the hair brittle and dry. The affect is to use more silicone to repair it, but it is a cycle of coating, drying, and coating again.

Phthalates

Phthalates (phtha – late or pha – late) are a group of chemicals that are used to increase the softness of plastics. Dimethyl Phthalate is mainly used in hair products. They are known to be linked to increased risk of some cancers. Phthalates are used in combination with silicone and other chemicals to give the desired affect of softness and shine to hair.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in many hair care products to extend shelf line by preventing the growth of bacteria. This is its only function. It is known to cause allergic skin reactions and be harmful to the immune system.

These are only a few of ingredients found in much of synthetic hair care products.

The article “What are we Made of” gives a detailed list of the ingredients we use and their benefits. Here are some of the benefits of using natural ingredients.

Abundant and Earth Friendly

All the products used in our formulas are grown from plants and the oils gathered by pressing the leaves, bark, and stems. Harmful chemical reactions are avoided. This translates into less harmful waste on the production side and on the consumer side (chemicals going down the drain into water reservoirs only to be treated again).

No Strange Side Effects

Natural ingredients that are use work with the natural chemistry of the body. Many times, the ingredients used have benefits for the overall health of the body, not just hair and skin. Some of the benefits can include the prevention of some cancers, remove toxins from the skin and body, relieve stress, improve the immune system, and reduce headaches.

Over Time

Using the products over time can keep the chemistry of the body in check. It will also promote natural hair growth and skin repair. Over time, using natural products will improve overall quality of life.

The cold bite of winter is harsh on the environment as well as your beard. Beard maintenance is often over looked during the winter months. Extra care and proper grooming habits are essential to maintaining not only a healthy beard, but a healthy face. Here are some tips to keep a healthy beard during the cold months.

Carefully choose your beard wash

Commercial soaps are full of synthetic ingredients that have damaging effects on the skin. Soaps like Dove and shampoos like Redken contain ingredients like sodium cocoyl isethionate (synthetic detergent), sodium tallowate (sodium salt of cow fat) and other emulsifiers and detergents. These ingredients counteract the natural oils produced by the skin and hair and will also cause skin irritation. Stripping your hair and face of these natural oils will leave your skin and beard dry and brittle. Even while using a good beard oil, you may still experience a dry and brittle beard along with dandruff. Find a natural soap with natural and organic ingredients.

Application: Use natural and milder beard wash or soap. Choose soaps designed specifically for beard use. These soaps lack the synthetic ingredients of popular brands but have tremendous benefits for your hair and skin. If possible, wash your beard only a few times a week.

Use a conditioner

Beard Oil, Beard Balms, and Beard Butters are key to help your beard battle dandruff, dryness, hair loss, split ends, and brittleness. The skin underneath is just as important as your epic beard that covers it. Keeping the skin and your beard conditioned and moisturized should be a main focus during the winter months. Butters make a great deep conditioner. Natural butters are a great skin conditioner and hair moisturizer as well.

Application: Find a good beard butter and beard oil. If using one, use more often during the winter. Good tip is to use butters 3 times a week and oils can be used daily. During the winter, change it up so you use the conditioner 3-4 times a week or can be used daily if needed. Longer and thicker beards may need oils and butters applied more often.

Hydrate!

Hydration is often overlooked by many people. Water is the cornerstone to your body's health. Staying hydrated will promote cardiovascular health, keep your body balanced by flushing out toxins, keep your muscles and joints working, promote healthier skin, promote healthier and shinier hair, and even promote weight loss. Give your skin and hair every advantage by staying hydrated.

Application: Drink more water!

The age old question, what's the difference between oils, butters, and balms and how to use them? This article will provide an answer to this age old question.

Beard Oil:

Beard oils are made of carrier oils. If it is a natural blend, it will use essential oils for the scent. Carrier oils each have their own unique properties and benefits. Essential oils will also provide added benefits to your beard. Beard oil is the most utilized and versatile element in your grooming routine.

(See article on “What are we made of” for list of carrier oil and butter benefits.)

Pros:

Good for condition and moisturizing

Great for any length of beard

Helps relive itching by providing the skin underneath the beard with nourishments and vitamins.

Cons:

For sensitive skin, essentials may irritate skin; use beard oil that is natural and unscented.

Use:

Use daily.

Beard Butter:

Butters made up of a mix of Shea butter, mango butter or some other type of natural butters along with carrier oils to provide nourishment to your beard. These butters and carrier oils are packed with awesome benefits and properties for a healthy and conditioned beard.

(See article on “What are we made of” for list of carrier oil and butter benefits.)

Pros:

Excellent for deep conditioning, moisturizing, and nourishment.

Great for any beard length or fullness.

Cons:

None

Use:

Can be used daily or periodically with the use of beard oil.

Ex: Use butter every other day while applying beard oil daily.

Beard Balm:

Typically, balms consist of the same base formula as butters. One major difference is the addition of a good quality wax. This is usually in the form of bees wax, but some may have some other type of wax. Balms will provide the same conditioning and benefits of butter, and with the addition of wax, it also provides a holding agent. The extra hold a balm provides is beneficial to maintain the shape and hold of loose hairs. Typically, used for mustaches and longer beards.

Pros:

All the benefits of butters.

Cons:

Wax can leave your beard hard. Beard needs to be cleaned more often.

Uses:

Use periodically. Best use on longer/fuller beards that may be harder to maintain.

Why use a Wooden Beard Comb?

This is one of the most important tools in your arsenal. If you have a full thick beard or if you are just starting your beard journey, a comb is essential to maintaining a beard. With all the different comb options to choose from, what’s the difference and does it really matter?

Let’s look at some of the options to choose from.

Plastic Combs have become a staple in the cosmetic industry. They are cheap, versatile, and very durable. Plastic combs, however have some disadvantages.

Plastic combs produce static electricity and it comes in contact with hair strands. Electrons’s then move from the hair stands to the come and lose negative charge. This movement causes static electricity. Static electricity caused your hair to become tangled and can lead to more breakage and even repel nourishing oils. The Oils will not be absorbed leaving a greasy residue behind while leaving the hair void of the oils benefits.

Plastic combs are manufactured with the use high heat. The heat can leave microscopic voids on the plastic teeth. These voids can cause edges and these edges can get caught on hair and can cause more breakage and damage.

Metal Combs are a popular trend. Metal combs are versatile, durable, and can be multi functional as key rings and bottle openers to name a few. Metal combs will have similar affects to that of plastic combs

If the metal is polished between the teeth, it will snag and cause breakage. If the beard is thin in some places, it can cause more damage and breakage.

Metal is non porous and super hard causing the beard oil and natural oils to be wiped away from the hair. This defeats the purpose of using beard oils and this will leave your beard dry.

Wooden Combs will give you the most benefits when trying to maintain a healthy beard. Wood is very durable and versatile and can be constructed from various types of wood for different looks and functions. Before the creation of synthetic material and before the wielding of metal, the earliest form of tools for cosmetic use was wood.

Untreated wood will not have any harsh chemicals that may come in contact with sensitive skin.

The smooth surface of wood will help gently detangle hair with less breakage. Even in the beginning stages of beard growth, it will help properly maintain your beard. There is also a double benefit! The smooth surface will gently message your beard and face with damage to the hair or skin. Although, this may seem superficial, massaging the skin can help stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and this will help promote beard growth!

Wood does not conduct electricity = static free. Along with the application of oil, using a wooden comb will help not cause breakage or cause ingrown hairs as the hair follicle will not be damaged. It will also help to keep your beard from becoming brittle and dry.

Wood will help distribute the natural oil from your hair and also the application of beard oils. Oil is evenly distributed from follicle to tip.

An untreated wooden comb will (over time) absorb the beard oil giving it a natural, chemical free, rustic, warn finish coating.

Easy maintenance, simply wash with warm water and gentle soap.

Wooden combs helps improve and promote hair growth.

Reduces the dandruff.

These are the top 3 easy tips to an epic beard. With the vast array of beard care products, videos, and other information, it can be hard to develop a proper grooming routine based on your needs. Here are three essential principles that you will need to use that will help you get the most out of your beard.

#1) Eat right! A healthy diet is the core to growing an epic beard. Vitamins A, C, and E are key nutrients that will be core elements to beard growth.

Vitamin A will aid in repairing and maintaining healthy skin. Healthy skin will promote better hair growth.

Vitamin C and Vitamin E aid in the production of sebum. Sebum is a natural oil produced by skin. Sebum is key to moisturizing hair and help your beard grow thicker.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to hair growth. Fatty acids will protect and strengthen hair follicles which will also aid in beard growth. A diet rich in these elements is an overlooked key element to beard growth.

#2) Let your hair grow! Sometimes we are anxious during the early stage of the journey and sometimes trim too much too soon. Let it grow! Take your time and be patient. An epic beard doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time. Most often, it is during this time where frustration sets in. We may not see the beard we imagined right away. But trust the process. It will grow, given you take care of it.

#3) This brings us to the next tip, take care of it! Keep your face clean and moisturized. Try to avoid harsh chemicals and synthetics as these can do more damage to your beard. Natural oils and butters are very similar to the oils your body produces and will work with the body instead of against it. Keep your beard moisturized and conditioned, even during the initial stages. This will help prevent itching during the beginning growth phase. A good routine will put you in the best position for an epic beard and great hygiene.

Comedogenic (com-e-do-gen-ic) is a medical term that means a substance that tends to produce acne by clogging pores on the skin. The medical term for acne is comedone, hence the word comedogenic. Comedo - meaning acne or blackhead and genic - means to produce.

These substances are found in carrier oils and essential oils. Different carrier oils, butters, and essential oils have different comedogenic properties and values. These are called comedogenic ratings. The ratings are on a scale from 0 through 5. There is also an irritant rating for each ingredient. The irritant rating is on a scale from 0 to 4. This is the likeliness of causing irritation to skin (0-not likely, 4-very likely).

Comedogenic Rating will look something like this:

0 - Will not clog pores

1 - Low

2 - Moderately low

3 - Moderate

4 - Fairly High

5 - High

Ingredients may be listed in this format:

Ingredient: comedogenic factor: irritant factor

i.e. Sunflower Oil: 0:0

So what does this have to do with my beard?

A quality beard oil will have carrier oils and essential oils on the low spectrum. Every beard is unique. While oils may have different properties and benefits, the determining factor should be how the oils interact and affect the skin it’s applied to and the benefits to the beard. Coconut oil has some wonderful benefits for hair and skin. But the comedogenic property for Coconut oil is 4, so we don’t use it in our beard oil formulas as it could cause some irritation to the sensitive skin on a man’s face. When searching for beard oil, it is important to do your homework. Often, these factors are over looked and the consumer may experience some skin irritation. To keep your beard healthy, you also have to pay attention and take care of the skin underneath. This rule applies to all types of skin care.

The journey to beard-om can be a pleasant one if you have to right tools in place. One of the most important tools will be the use of a high quality beard oil. So, what is beard oil and how do I use it? Let us answer that in three parts.

First, what is beard oil use for?

Beard oil is used as a moisturizing agent both for the beard itself and also the skin underneath. During the growth process, the beard and skin can be left untreated and exposed to harsh and chemical filled soaps. As a result of using these chemicals on a daily basis, the beard hair is robbed of its natural healthy oils and becomes dry, brittle, and hard. The skin can also become damaged and if not moisturized can become dry, flaky, and irritated. With thick curly hair, this damaged skin can aid in the formation of ingrown hairs and inflammation (bumps and redness).

This is where quality beard oil comes into play. Beard oil should contain moisturizing properties that are beneficial to both the hair and the skin. It should also have some anti-biotic and anti-bacterial properties to help cleanse and detoxify. This benefit is found when essential oils are added. Quality beard oil should be easily absorbed into the skin and hair leaving the beard soft, moisturized, and healthy.

Second, what is beard oil made of?

To get the benefits just listed, let’s take a look of what beard oil consists of. Usually, natural beard oil consists of Carrier oils and Essential oils.

Carrier Oils are made from the fatty portion of plants either from seeds or nuts. Carrier oils are used to dilute the concentration of essential oils. Carrier oils have their own unique and beneficial properties. This makes up the base of beard oils. This is where the moisturizing and conditioning properties are found. Some examples of Carrier oils are: Safflower Seed Oil, Olive Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Grape Seed Oil, and Sunflower Seed Oil to name a few (there are dozens, each with their own special properties).

In a future article, we will list all the carrier oils that we use in our products along with their properties and benefits.

Essential Oils are distilled from leaves, bark, roots and other aromatic portions of plants. Essential oils are concentrated and tend to evaporate easily. Essential oils cannot be applied to the skin in large amounts. Thus, they need to be diluted by Carrier oils. Essential oils add their unique aromatic, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties.

With some creativity and ingenuity, we created a clever blend of Carrier oils and Essential oils that will provide some awesome benefits for your beard. We will list all the carrier and essential oils that we use in our products along with their unique properties and benefits. Stay Tuned!

And Finally, How do I use Beard Oil?

It is best to use beard oil when your beard is slightly damp and warm. It is ideal to apply after you shower to a clean face. Do not apply at bed time as the oil should absorb into your beard and not your pillow or sheets. This may also cause some irritation if skin/beard comes in constant contact with a non-breathable material for several hours (pillow). Only a small amount is needed. A one ounce bottle will go a long way. Place a few drops on hand or beard and massage into beard and skin underneath. Finish styling with a wooden comb or brush. Beard Oil can be used daily.
