The writers had enjoyed successes with The Rag Trade and Meet the Wife for the BBC. The BBC rejected On the Buses and the duo turned to the ITV company London Weekend Television. The show was accepted and despite a poor critical reception became a hit with viewers.

Situation

Stan Butler (Reg Varney) works as a bus driver for the Luxton & District Traction Company. He lives with his bingo-loving, widowed and overbearing mother (Cicely Courtneidge, later Doris Hare), his frumpy sister, Olive (Anna Karen), and his lazy brother-in-law, Arthur (Michael Robbins). The bane of Stan's life is Inspector Cyril "Blakey" Blake (Stephen Lewis), who is often checking up on him and his conductor and friend, the cheerful, bucktoothed Jack Harper (Bob Grant). Blakey threatens them with the sack for lateness and untidiness; he sports a toothbrush moustache and general appearance in the image of Adolf Hitler. His catchphrases are "I ‘ate you Butler!" and "That's made my day, that 'as. In later years Arthur and then Stan left the series, Olive worked for the bus company and Blakey moved in to board at Mum's house.

Background

Seventy-four half-hour episodes were made. Also popular were the spin-off films by Hammer Film Productions On the Buses, 1971; Mutiny on the Buses, 1972; and Holiday on the Buses, 1973, set on a Pontin's holiday camp). On the Buses became Britain's top box-office film at the time, surpassing the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever (1971).

The films were somewhat non-canonical to the series - in the films, Arthur and Olive manage to have two children (she's pregnant with their second child at the end of Mutiny On The Buses) and Stan is working for “The Town & District Bus Company" instead of "The Luxton & District Bus Company. The buses in the films are red (not counting the Windsor Safari Park tour bus in Mutiny On The Buses).

Towards the end of the series, Arthur has left Olive - they have no children, they get divorced and Stan takes a job in the Midlands. The buses are green (though, in the black and white episodes, it's hard to tell).

In addition, two five-minute Christmas specials were made by LWT. One has been wiped but the other — featuring a goose that the cast are chasing for Christmas dinner — exists at Fremantle Media.

A spin-off series, Don't Drink the Water, ran for 13 episodes from 1974 to 1975. This featured Blake retiring to Spain with his sister, Dorothy (Pat Coombs).

The format of On the Buses was sold to American television, where it was remade by NBC as Lotsa Luck, starring Dom DeLuise, running for 24 episodes in 1973–74. The American version was unsuccessful and has never been screened in Britain.

The series was recorded at London Weekend Television's studios at Wembley. In late 1972 the show relocated to the company's new South Bank of the River Thames; here the outside doors to the main and secondary studios were too small to accommodate the double-decker buses used in the series. Therefore single-decker buses were used and a plywood mock-up of a second deck was lowered from a lighting rig.

Filmed external shots were part of the series. LWT arranged with Eastern National bus company to use their buses at the Wood Green bus garage in north London. For the series, they were under the ownership of 'Luxton and District'. 'Luxton' is supposed to be in Essex, and actual Essex towns such as Southend, Basildon, Braintree and Tilbury are all mentioned. One of the termini for the buses was 'Cemetery Gates' and for this, LWT used the entrance to Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield, Middlesex, near Reg Varney's home.

The fourth season was affected by the ITV Colour Strike, with seven of 13 episodes being made in black and white.

On the Buses was the subject of a board game by Denys Fisher games.

After a tour of Australia in 1988 in an On the Buses stage play, a revival of the television series, Back on the Buses was mooted in 1990, featuring Varney, Lewis, Robbins, Hare, Karen and Grant. Despite publicity, including an appearance by the cast on the BBC TV chat show Wogan, the idea never came to fruition though and the series was never made. Although scripts were never written, the proposed series was to feature Stan and Jack running their own bus company and coming into conflict with Blakey, who was running a rival firm.

Buses

The red "Town & District" buses were Bristol KSWs with Eastern Coachworks bodies. These were ex Eastern National. Stan and Jack's "regular” bus appeared to be VNO 857.

The Green "Luxton & District" buses were Bristol Lodekkas with bodywork by Eastern Coach Works of Lowestoft. In reality these were Eastern National buses, although as mentioned earlier, some of those in the interior depot shots were in fact "dummy" buses.

The open top bus in ''Holiday on the Buses was 229 XFM, a Bristol LD new to Crosville Motor Services.

The bus at the safari park in 'Mutiny on the Buses' was NRN 607, a Leyland Atlantean Metro Cammell, new to Ribble Motor Services.

It is famous for Chepstow Castle and Chepstow Racecourse, which hosts the Welsh Grand National. Chepstow proper is on the west bank of the Wye, within Wales; the English part on the eastern bank consists of Tutshill and Sedbury

History

Chepstow sits upstream of the confluence of the River Wye and River Severn. There has been a settlement on the site since at least the early Middle Ages. It was named Striguil in Norman times - from the Welsh word ystraigyl meaning a bend in the river - but became known as Chepstow from the old English ceap / chepe stowe meaning market place.

The oldest areas of known habitation are the Iron Age fortified camps at Bulwark and iercefield. Later, there may have been a Roman bridge or ford over the Wye, either near the existing bridge or about 1 mile upstream at Castleford. Chepstow is located at a crossing point directly between the Roman towns of Gloucester and Caerwent. The town is also close to the southern point of Offa's Dyke, which begins on the east bank of the Wye and runs all the way to the Irish Sea in north Wales. This was built in about the 8th century as a boundary between English and Welsh kingdoms, although recent research cited in the page on Offa's Dyke suggests that the part near Chepstow may not actually be part of the original Dyke.

Chepstow Castle is the oldest surviving stone fortification in Britain. After the Norman Invasion Chepstow was identified as an ideal site for a castle, as it not only controlled a crossing point on the River Wye, but also because the steep limestone gorge and castle dell afforded an excellent defensive location. William the Conqueror ordered its construction in 1067, and, according to the Domesday Book, it was designed by the master castle builder of the time, William fitzsbern. The speed with which William the Conqueror committed to the creation of a castle in Chepstow is testament to its strategic importance.

At the time, the kingdoms in the area were independent of the English crown and the castle in Chepstow provided a way to suppress the Welsh from attacking Gloucestershire. From the 14th century, with the end of the wars between England and Wales, the castle's importance declined.

A town grew up beside the castle, the Priory church, and the port, and in 1294 Chepstow was given the right to hold a weekly market and annual fair. It flourished partly because it was exempt from English taxation. The town wall, locally known as the Port Wall, was built about this time, and mostly still stands. Particularly good sections can be seen at the Welsh Street car park, and either side of the A48 road. The Town Gate through the wall at the top end of the High Street was rebuilt in the 16th century and was used as a toll gate.

The most significant church in Chepstow is the Parish and Priory Church of St Mary, located at the bottom of the town. It, like the castle, is Norman in origin, although much rebuilt and extended in later centuries. St Mary's was the centre of a religious community with a convent and school, the remains of which are buried under the adjoining car park. Benedictine monks from Cormeilles Abbey in Normandy, Chepstow's twin town, were there until the Dissolution of the Monasteries from 1536.

Industries

In addition to being a market town, Chepstow was from medieval times the largest port in Wales. Chepstow was still a bustling port of substance, when during the period of 1790 to 1795 it clearly shows record of a greater tonnage of goods handled than Swansea, Cardiff & Newport combined. Although it mainly traded in timber from the Wye Valley and with Bristol, in the medieval period, records show that Chepstow ships sailed as far afield as Iceland and Turkey, as well as to France, Portugal and Ireland. Ships, including many built and launched in Chepstow clearly sailed the world and in 1840, leaders of the Chartist insurrection in Newport were transported from Chepstow to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania).

Other goods exported from Chepstow over the years included wire made in the many mills on the tributaries of the Wye, leather which was tanned with the bark of the forest's oaks, and paper primarily from Mounton Mill which produced the first high grade security paper used by the Bank of England for the printing of bank notes. An important aspect of Chepstow's trade has been entrepôt trade bringing larger cargoes into the manageable deep water of the Wye on high tide and breaking down the load for on shipment in the many throws up the Wye to Hereford past the coin stamping mill at Redbrook, or up the Severn to Gloucester and beyond. Chepstow also traded across the estuary to Bristol on suitable tides to work vessels up and down the Avon to that city's centre.

The port function and local shipbuilding trade declined during the 19th century as ship design developed and the cities of Cardiff, Newport and Swansea became more suitable for handling the bulk export of coal and steel from the Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire valleys. Shipbuilding was briefly revived during the First World War when the first prefabricated ships were constructed. Ships like The War Glory & The War Illiad were constructed and launched primarily from the slipways on the Chepstow side, where 10,000 tons was the manageable limit. The last of these ships was recorded as lost at sea in the South Atlantic losing all hands, whilst carrying a cargo of grain in 1956. The area known as "Garden City" and parts of Bulwark Village were built to house the workers that were brought to Chepstow from 1917 to work in the new National Shipyard no.1. The Bulwark area is now home to about two thirds of the population of Chepstow.

The shipyard developed on the site where the Wye railway bridge had been constructed, and was subsequently taken over by the engineering firm Fairfield Mabey, who specialise in steelwork producing spans for bridges and other structures. One such structure was the lock gate for Avonmouth Docks where during delivery a squall struck the gates and the delivery crew were swept off and lost. Other local industries have included the material for artificial ski slopes, developed at the "Dendix" brush factory, which in its time was one of the major producers of everything from small specialist brushes to huge industrial brushes.

Chepstow, by virtue of its having been the head office of the Red & White bus company (on Bulwark Road), grew and spawned BST, which in turn owned and controlled PUTCO, the Public Utility Bus Company that ran the majority of the buses of Africa. The town also had links with the international snuff trade through Singleton's Snuff.

Transport

The old cast iron road bridge across the Wye, dating from 1816 and designed by John Rastrick, is an elegant example of engineering from the Regency period. The bridge comprises five cast-iron arches carried on stone piers and has a central span of 112 ft. It succeeded a number of wooden predecessors which had been built on or near the same site since at least 1228, and possibly much earlier. In 1576 the bridge was described as being in great decay, and an Act was passed making Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire responsible for the repair of their respective halves. Neglect continued, however, and in 1606 the bridge was said to have fallen down and been carried away. By the beginning of the 18th century the bridge comprised a wooden decking carried by a central stone pier and five piers on either side each formed by a number of timber piles. The Monmouthshire half of the bridge was rebuilt as four stone arches in 1785, but the Gloucestershire half remained timber until 1815 when rebuilding of the whole bridge was begun to the overall plans of John Rennie, as modified by Rastrick.

Until the Severn Bridge - now part of the M48 - was opened in 1966, and a new A48 bridge over the Wye in 1988, the old bridge carried all the road traffic between England and South Wales. The Severn Bridge has the second longest span of any bridge in the UK; it replaced the Aust-Beachley ferry.

Chepstow railway station is on the Gloucester to Newport Line. The railway bridge over the Wye was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1852, but the original structure was replaced in the 1960s. Until 1959, passenger trains operated up the Wye Valley to Monmouth - this service ceased owing to heavy financial losses.

The town today

Chepstow town centre has over 130 shops within easy walking distance of 1000 car park spaces. There are 16 hotels, bars and pubs, and 15 restaurants and cafes. Chepstow Community Hospital was opened in 2002 as a PFI funded hospital and several new housing estates have been developed across the town. Over £2 million has recently been invested in regenerating the town centre. This scheme, which includes new sculptures and other public art, encountered some local criticism over its high cost, but has gained several national awards reflecting its high design quality.

The area beside the river has been attractively landscaped as part of a flood defence scheme. The town holds a biennial festival, an annual folk festival, and in some recent years has also organised major son et lumiere pageants covering aspects of local history, using local residents under professional direction. There is also an excellent local museum, opposite the Castle entrance.

There are industrial estates at Bulwark and close to the railway station, and a major distribution centre on the edge of the town adjoining the junction with the M48 motorway. There has been substantial housing development in recent years, particularly at the Bayfield estate west of the A466.

Chepstow Racecourse is the leading horse racing facility and course in Wales. It is located on the edge of the town, in the grounds of the ruined Piercefield House. Sundays see an extensive market set up on the racecourse grounds which is attended by vendors from as far a field as Birmingham, London, Kent and beyond. During the course of the year the racecourse hosts a number of hobbies and antique fairs.

Chepstow also has many excellent schools including Chepstow School. One of the best co-education semi-boarding schools St Johns on the Hill is located on the outskirts towards Tutshill. There are also a number of churches in Chepstow, including a variety of non-conformist denominations.

Nearby are the Royal Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. Tintern Abbey is about 5 miles distant. Many current residents of the town commute to Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and elsewhere.

Chepstow is twinned with Cormeilles, France.

Useful Links
The full title is Newport Cathedral, Woolos, King & Confessor. Since 2003, the Bishop of Monmouth has been the Right Reverend Dominic Walker, OGS. The current Dean of Monmouth (and vicar of the cathedral) is the Very Reverend Dr. Richard Fenwick, who has been in post since 1997. In February 2011 Dr. Fenwick was elected as the next Bishop of St. Helena within the Anglican Church of South Africa. The Diocese covers the islands of Saint Helena and Ascension in the Atlantic Ocean. He will take up the position of Bishop in May 2011. His successor, Canon Jeremy Winston, will be Installed on September 10th.

Saint Woolos

The name "Woolos" is a corruption of Gwynllyw, the 5th century Welsh saint who first founded a religious establishment on the site.

Norman History

Circa 1080 the Normans built a new nave to the east of the Saxon ruins, and a lean-to south aisle, building a new entrance archway through the Saxon wall. Circa 1200 the Saxon church was repaired so the Norman entrance became an internal archway.

Mediæval History

It was badly damaged in 1402 when Newport was attacked by the forces of Owain Glyndŵr and underwent a major rebuilding including the addition of the tower.

It also seems to have been damaged in the Civil war period when a statue above the main entrance representing a benefactor of the church seems to have lost its head. It is either Jasper Tudor, the Earl of Pembroke, or Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham as both helped rebuild it after Glyndwr's attack.

Recent History

It has been partially rebuilt or extended in every period up to the 1960s. It is currently undergoing much-needed repairs and an appeal fund has started. In 1929 St Woolos became the Pro-Cathedral of the new Diocese of Monmouth, attaining full cathedral status in 1949.

With the Enthronement of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Wales in February 2000, the Cathedral became the Metropolitan Cathedral for Wales for the third time in its life. The Cathedral continues to serve Wales, the diocese and the City of Newport; it also serves a large parish.

It is also a place of pilgrimage for political and industrial historians - a plaque in the church yard commemorates the bloody suppression of the Chartist rebellion here in 1839.

Organ

A specification of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register The current organist and Master of the Choristers is Christopher Barton, who has been in post since 1979.
Located on the east bank of the River Usk in Newport city centre it is primarily used for rugby matches and is the home ground of Newport RFC and the Newport Gwent Dragons regional team.

History

In 1875 the Newport Athletic Club was created, and two years later they secured the use of land at Rodney Parade from Lord Tredegar for their cricket, tennis, rugby and athletics teams.

Redevelopment

The cricket ground which was on the site no longer exists as the ground was sold and the new Maindee primary school was built on the site.
On September 4, 2007 it was announced that the Rodney Parade stadium was due to be redeveloped into a 15,000-capacity ground by the beginning of the 2010 rugby union season. The redevelopment is backed by Newport City Council, Newport Unlimited, Newport RFC and the Newport Gwent Dragons. The application received planning consent on March 11, 2009. A previous proposal to build an entirely new out-of-town stadium appears to have been shelved.

In August 2010 it was announced that the target finish date for the first phase had been put back to the beginning of the 2011–12 rugby union season with the full redevelopment planned to take several years.
It is currently the home of Newport County A.F.C., Llanwern F.C. and Newport Harriers Athletic Club. Albion Rovers F.C. had also previously called it home.

The Stadium, which is owned and managed by Newport City Council, has been upgraded to Football Conference standard in recent years and has a crowd capacity of 4,700. The Stadium is part of the City of Newport International Sports Village, which includes the Wales National Velodrome. The grandstand seats 1,100 spectators and there is a large covered terrace on the opposite side of the pitch, a small-uncovered terrace behind the one goal and a flat standing area behind the other goal. The stadium has a sizeable car park but there is often insufficient parking availability on Newport County match days.

The grandstand side also includes the BarAmber licensed bar that serves hot food and features a large-screen projection TV, Amber Sports, the Newport County club shop, along with other refreshment and toilet facilities. A food stand and toilets are located on the covered terrace side.

The stadium can accommodate international-standard track and field athletic events and is of Class 1 standard. The stadium floodlighting can achieve up to an average of 500 Lux.

Newport RFC plan to build a new 15,000 capacity rugby stadium on the Rodney Parade site therefore Newport Stadium may become an option for the rugby union teams that currently play at Rodney Parade during the redevelopment.

Stands

In 2004, Newport Stadium was upgraded to Football Conference standard. The upgrading included a new main covered Terrace built on the old one at the Traston Road side of the ground, commonly referred to within the club as The Shed. A new terrace was also built at the Spytty Road End. When Newport County played Blackpool in the 2001–02 FA Cup, a temporary stand was erected right behind the goal at the Spytty Road End, (at that time there was only the Grandstand and a very small terrace). The ward includes the districts of Barnardtown, Riverside, and most of St. Julians (the rest being in Beechwood ward).

St Julians has two primary schools, namely Glan Usk Primary School (formerly Durham Road Infant School and Durham Road Junior School) and St Julians Primary School. Glan Usk Primary School moved to new school premises in January 2010. St Julians Comprehensive School is the one comprehensive school in the ward.

The new school has been built on a hazardous waste landfill at the Glebelands in the western part of St Julians. The Glebelands site was operated as a landfill between the 1930s and 1960s such that the waste materials contributed to raising this low lying part of Newport by some three to four metres. The site received domestic, trade, and industrial wastes including unrecorded amounts of hazardous waste such as polychlorinated biphenyls, asbestos, mercury, and arsenic. The history of this site and concerns about public health and the wider environment resulted in much opposition and delay to construction of the new primary school. The new school also provides nursery school places, following the closure of Rockfield Nursery.

All the roads in St Julian's estate are named after famous painters. St Julian's itself is named after Saint Julius of Caerleon, the Roman martyr. The Anglican parish church for St Julian's is dedicated to the martyred Saints of Julius and Aaron and sits mid-way along Heather Road and the Roman Catholic church on Beaufort Road is dedicated to St Julius.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

It is bounded by the M4 motorway to the south, the Ebbw River to the west, the Henllys vale to the east and the city boundary with Caerphilly county borough to the north.

Rogerstone railway station is on the Ebbw Valley Railway. It opened on 6 February 2008 and links Ebbw Vale to Cardiff Central via Rogerstone. The link from Rogerstone to Newport railway station is under consideration.

History

The original settlement dates back to Norman times when Rogerstone Castle was built in the early part of the 12th century. The name is said to originate from Roger de Haia, the Norman Lord who was responsible for the building of the castle, the remains of which are reduced to a low bush and tree covered motte opposite Criddle's garage on the lower section of Tregwilym Road. The Welsh name however translates to "black house".

The larger parish of Rogerstone started as two distinct settlements of Tregwilym and Tydu, Tregwilym taking its name from the land owner, William de Berkerolles. These hamlets remained predominantly rural until the advent of the industrial revolution. The population grew in response to the tin, iron and aluminium industries which flourished near the South Wales coalfield. At one point, the village boasted the longest aluminium rolling mill in Western Europe and one of the largest marshalling yards on the Great Western Railway network.

The village played host to John Frost and his fellow Chartists on their historical march from the valleys to Newport, the Welsh Oak public house just north of the parish being one of the key meeting points for the protestors before they set off through the parish towards the Westgate Hotel and turmoil.

The parish sits astride the Crumlin branch of the Monmouthshire Canal and plays host to the Fourteen Lock. The canal opened in 1798 but was dogged by water supply problems and competition from the railways and by 1930; it had finally succumbed and has since fallen into disrepair.

Modern day Rogerstone

The designation of the Rogerstone section of the canal as part of the National Cycle Network (route 47) and more recent efforts to restore parts of the canal have made the site a popular tourist attraction.

Rogerstone was traditionally an industrial, working class village, but recent expensive housing developments such as that on the site of the former power station has added more than 1,000 dwellings and an ever increasing middle class population. This has been influenced by the improved transport links to Cardiff. Supposedly it derives from the period when Gwynllyw was a pirate and he based his ships in this area.

Boundaries

The ward is bounded by the River Usk to the east and southeast, the Ebbw River to the southwest, the Great Western Main Line to the west and Cardiff Road to the north.

Heart of Newport

It is an inner-city district to the south of the city centre and the built-up area is commonly shortened to "Pill". It contains the Newport Docks and the western ends of the Newport Transporter Bridge, City Bridge and George Street Bridge.

Pill is known for its close-knit community spirit and a large number of immigrants which contribute to its ethnic diversity. Pill has a large majority of foreign decent within the city due to being host to The Old Town Docks where a large influx of English and Irish immigrants among others came to work. The streets of Pill also play host to the Pill Carnival on the last weekend of every August. The Old Town Dock area is currently undergoing a huge mixed-use regeneration to bring the derelict dock lands back into use. A lively market takes place on a Saturday morning at the Newport Auctions site.

Portland Sreet in Pill was the birthplace for the famous "Tramp Poet" W. H. Davies and the nearby Church House Inn, where he was brought up by his grandparents, has a commemorative blue plaque.

Sporting traditions

Pill Harriers RFC is a successful rugby union team affiliated to the Welsh Rugby Union, whose membership was historically made up from the local dock workers. In its past it supplied many players to both Newport and Wales.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

Earlier examples of the name include the definite article 'Le' and even an odd Welsh definite article 'Y' i.e. Le Malpas, Y Malpas.

The community

There are two large housing estates either side of the main Malpas Road (A4051): Hollybush and Malpas Court to the west is a council estate (although many of the houses are now in private ownership) and to the east are Malpas Park, Claremont, Pilton Vale and the Woodlands all of which is privately-owned. The roads in Malpas Court take their names from famous inventors and scientists, while those in Malpas Park are named after trees. The roads in Woodlands are named after World War II generals, e.g. Allenbrooke Avenue, Horrocks Close, Montgomery Road, Robertson Way, Wavell Drive, etc. Claremont and Pilton Vale however are just single street names with large house numbers.

History

The Malpas Institute Trust is a charitable fund, founded on the sale of the World War I Memorial Institute. The website has some interesting pages about the War Memorial Plaque and the local residents who both served and were sacrificed their lives in combat.

Schooling

There are four primary schools in the ward. Malpas Church Infants, Malpas Church Juniors, Malpas Court, and Malpas Park.

Churches

There are three Christian churches in Malpas, St. Mary's Church in Wales, Trinity Presbyterian, and St. Anne's Roman Catholic. The fourth Malpas Church, Christchurch, which is just off the Old Malpas Road is in the Shaftesbury Ward. There are no formal places of worship for other religions or faiths.

Private hospital

Malpas is also home to the only private hospital in Newport, St. Joseph's Hospital, run by the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy, and an in-patient hospice service, St Anne's Hospice, run by the same group.

Army Cadet Force

There is a detachment for Gwent & Powys ACF near Oliphant Circle. It is badged to the local TA regiment the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers. The detachment parades on Thursday 1830 - 2030 and welcomes 12 - 18yr olds. Llanwern ward is bounded by the M4 and Langstone to the north, Ringland, Liswerry and the River Usk to the west, the River Severn to the south and the city boundary to the east. The ward includes Bishton, Goldcliff, Whitson and Redwick, as well as the community of Llanwern (population 333), which contains Llanwern village and the western half of the site of Llanwern steelworks.

Llanwern House was the home of Lord Rhondda of Llanwern, (David Alfred Thomas), who was Food Controller during the First World War. It was demolished in the 1950s, although the site, on a hill overlooking the parish church, is still visible and the parkland intact. D. A. Thomas is buried in the graveyard of the tiny church.

Regeneration

A £115m renewal project led by St Modwen Properties PLC is currently transforming the former steel-producing part of the Llanwern steelworks site. The masterplan envisages 1.5m sq ft of employment-generating accommodation hosting 6,000 jobs, 4,000 new dwellings, community facilities and open space including 3 new lakes. Full completion is anticipated by 2026-8.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

Lliswerry ward is composed of both the Lliswerry and Nash communities.

Schools & colleges

The ward is the site of the City of Newport Campus for Coleg Gwent (commonly referred to as 'Nash College') and the Newport International Sports Village. Liswerry has a high school, a junior school and primary school, situated close to each other. The high school is adjacent to the college campus, with the junior and infants school located further north along Nash Road.

Churches

Liswerry has three churches St. Andrews Church in Wales situated on Somerton Road and Liswerry Baptist church situated in Camperdown Road, as well as St Patrick's Roman Catholic church in Cromwell Road.

History & origins

Liswerry is well-known across the city for the railway bridge over Somerton Road with 'This is Lliswerry with 2 L's' painted in white across it. So is it one or two Ls? The answer is both. Liswerry is an anglicised version of the place name Llyswyry translating to Maiden's Court. It is believed that there was a manor house in the area belonging to the Welsh King of Brycheiniog. His daughter had connections to the manor/court. Some of the ward is hilly and heavily forested. It is bounded to the north and east by the city boundary, to the west by the Caerleon ward and to the south west by the Ringland and Llanwern wards.

Development

The original village was a small linear settlement along the A48 (Chepstow Road) and its offshoot, Tregarn Road. Since the 1990s, many have moved to the area because of its appeal as being rural, but also minutes away from the M4 motorway. This population influx in the '90s resulted in the construction of a large housing development at the bottom of Cat's Ash Road, together with developments of housing estates, big and small, along Tregarn Road and Magor Road.

The ward contains the parishes of Penhow and Llanvaches, as well as the parish of Langstone (population 2,770). The parish itself contains the hamlets of Llanbeder, Llandevaud and Llanmartin as well as Langstone itself.

History

The actual village of Langstone (excluding the adjoining villages of Penhow-Parc Seymour, Llanvaches, Llandevaud, Llanbedr and Llanmartin) in 1801 had 126 inhabitants. By 1901 the population had risen to 206. The United Kingdom Census 2001 recorded the population as 3,905 people.

Amenities

Langstone Primary School celebrated its 50th birthday in 2004, and is currently home to around 300 pupils. The logbook entries for the 1950s and 1960s show that the school originally served areas as far away as Nash and Ringland, however it is now well over capacity serving simply Langstone and its surrounds.

The MP for Newport East, and thus incorporating Langstone is Jessica Morden (Labour) who assumed in office in 2005.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

The name "Gaer" is from the Welsh word for fort (Caer), as found in Caerleon. It has an area which is recognised to be an old hillfort site, believed to be Iron Age - however the Gaer Inn pub sign depicts a Roman legionary soldier. Gaer estate is usually referred to as "the Gaer" by locals. The names of the roads in the Gaer Estate are those of famous poets, dramatists and writers.

The ward is bounded by Bassaleg Road to the north, the Great Western main line to the east, the Ebbw River to the southeast, Cardiff Road to the southwest, and the M4 motorway to the west.

It is a ward of some contrast — both the Gaer and Maesglas council estates are Communities First areas, as they are recognised as being high on the index of multiple deprivation used by the Welsh Assembly to establish the poverty of an area - yet there is a small area in the north and east of the ward where large private houses can be found more characteristic of the neighbouring middle class and affluent Allt-yr-yn ward and typical semi-detached suburban houses found along Cardiff Road, Old Cardiff Road, and either side of the Ebbw Bridge. The Gaer is famous for its well-designed, well-built and well-maintained housing and also its friendly and welcoming population.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

Caerleon also has strong literary associations, as Geoffrey of Monmouth makes Caerleon one of the most important cities in Britain in his Historia Regum Britanniæ, and Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote Idylls of the King while staying in Caerleon.

History

Caerleon is a site of considerable archaeological importance, being the location of a Roman legionary fortress or Castra (it was the headquarters for Legio II Augusta from about 75 to 300 AD) and an Iron Age hill fort. The name Caerleon is derived from the Welsh for "fortress of the legion"; the Romans themselves called it Isca which itself comes from the Welsh name for the river: "Wysg". Substantial excavated Roman remains can be seen, including the military amphitheatre, thermae (baths) and barracks occupied by the Roman Legion. According to Gildas (followed by Bede), Roman Caerleon was the site of two early Christian martyrdoms, those of Julius and Aaron. Recent finds suggest Roman occupation of some kind as late as AD 380. Roman remains have also been discovered at The Mynde, itself a distinctive historical site.

Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, after the Romans had left Britain, Caerleon or nearby Isca Silurum (now Caerwent) was the administrative centre of the Kingdom of Gwent. The parish church of St Cadoc was founded on the site of the legionary headquarters building probably sometime in the 6th century. A Norman-style motte and bailey castle was built outside the eastern corner of the old Roman fort, probably by the Welsh Lord of Caerleon, Caradog ap Gruffydd. Battles raged between the Welsh and Normans and in 1171 Iorwerth ab Owain and his two sons destroyed the town of Caerleon and burned the Castle.

Caerleon was an important market and port and presumably became a borough by 1171, although no independent charters exist. Both castle and borough were seized by William Marshal in 1217 and Caerleon castle was rebuilt in stone. The remains of many of the old Roman buildings stood to some height until this time and were probably demolished for their building materials.

The Welsh Revolt

During the Welsh Revolt in 1402 Rhys Gethin, General for Owain Glyndŵr, took Caerleon Castle together with those of Newport, Cardiff, Llandaff, Abergavenny, Caerphilly and Usk by force. This was probably the last time Caerleon castle was ruined, though the walls were still standing in 1537 and the castle ruins only finally collapsed in 1739 - their most obvious remnant is the Round Tower at the Hanbury Arms public house.

English Civil War

Across the Afon Llwyd from Caerleon, in the region of Penrhos Farm, are two English Civil War forts. In 1648 Oliver Cromwell's troops camped overnight on Christchurch Hill, overlooking Newport, before their attack on Newport Castle the next day.

Modern Period

The old wooden Caerleon Bridge was destroyed in a storm in 1779 and the present stone version was erected in the early 19th century. Until the Victorian development of the downstream docks at Newport Docks, Caerleon acted as the major port on the River Usk. The wharf was located on the right bank, to the west of today's river bridge which marked the limit of navigability for masted ships. A tinplate works was established on the outskirts of the town around this time and Caerleon expanded to become almost joined to Newport.

The name of the Drovers' Arms on Goldcroft Common bears witness to the ancient drovers' road on the old road from Malpas. It is thought that the common itself was once the site of a cattle market.

Legend of King Arthur

Geoffrey of Monmouth makes Caerleon one of the most important cities in Britain in his Historia Regum Britanniæ. He gives it a long, glorious history from its foundation by King Belinus to becoming the location of a metropolitan see, an Archbishopric, superior to Canterbury and York, under Saint Dubricius. He was followed by St David who moved the archbishopric to St David's Cathedral. This culminates in Geoffrey's making the town a court of King Arthur.

There was no Camelot mentioned in the early Arthurian account of Geoffrey of Monmouth and his translators Wace and Layamon: "Camelot" originates with the French writer of courtly romance Chrétien de Troyes. These earlier authors say that Arthur's capital was Caerleon (which Chretien also mentions), while even the later recaster of Arthurian material in English, Sir Thomas Malory, has Arthur re-crowned at "Carlion". The still-visible Roman amphitheatre at Caerleon has been associated with Arthur's 'Round-Table' element of the tales and has been suggested as a possible source for the legend.

Geoffrey of Monmouth writes of Caerleon in the mid 12th century:
"For it was located in a delightful spot in Glamorgan, on the River Usk, not far from the Severn Sea. Abounding in wealth more than other cities, it was suited for such a ceremony. For the noble river I have named flows along it on one side, upon which the kings and princes who would be coming from overseas could be carried by ship. But on the other side, protected by meadow and woods, it was remarkable for royal palaces, so that it imitated Rome in the golden roofs of its buildings... Famous for so many pleasant features, Caerleon was made ready for the announced feast."

This is only a short part of a description that emphasises the power and wealth of Arthur's court. The huge scale of the ruins along with Caerleon's importance as a urban centre in early mediæval Gwent would have inspired stories which Geoffrey expanded.

Caerleon also has later Arthurian literary associations, as the birthplace of the writer Arthur Machen who often used it as a location in his work. The Hanbury Arms was visited by the poet Tennyson who lodged at the inn while he wrote his Morte d'Arthur (later incorporated into his Idylls of the King). Today Caerleon has a modern statue of a knight, "The Hanbury Knight", in reflecting inox by Belgian sculptor Thierry Lauwers.

In Michael Morpurgo's novel Arthur, High King of Britain, Caerleon is the castle where Arthur unknowingly commits incest with his half-sister Margause, resulting in the conception of his son Mordred who will later bring about his downfall.

Modern Day Caerleon

Caerleon is centred around a small common. Goldcroft Common is the only remaining of the seven commons of Caerleon. Most of the small businesses of Caerleon are near the common as is the Tourist Information Office and Town Hall which has a World War I and World War II memorial garden. The intersection of High Street and Cross Street is known as The Square.

Buildings of note are Saint Cadoc's Church, the National Roman Legion Museum, the Roman Baths Museum, The Mynde, The Priory Hotel, Caerleon Catholic Church and Rectory, Caerleon Endowed School, the Round Tower, the Toll House at Caerleon Bridge, The Malt House hotel, University of Wales, Newport Caerleon Campus and St Cadoc's Hospital. The historic remains of the Roman Legionary Fortress Isca Augusta is popular with tourists and school parties and there is a marked heritage trail in the village. The Millennium Wildlife Garden is a small nature garden on the banks of the River Usk. The hilltop vantage point at Christchurch provides panoramic views of the Vale of Usk and Bristol Channel.

The municipal playing fields are at Caerleon Broadway and a good quality children's playground is in Cold Bath Road. Private sport and leisure facilities are available at the Celtic Manor and the University of Wales, Newport Caerleon Campus. Caerleon library is located in the grounds of Caerleon Comprehensive School. Caerleon has a few restaurants, cafés and take-away food outlets and many public houses that have restaurant facilities. The Ffwrrwm is a small specialist shopping courtyard with an eclectic display of sculpture. Caerleon also has its own station of Gwent Police and an active community policing presence.

Governance

Caerleon is an electoral ward of Newport City Council. Caerleon is within the UK Parliamentary consituency of Newport West, the National Assembly for Wales constituency of Newport West and the Wales European Parliament Constituency.

Geography

The centre of Caerleon sits in the Vale of Usk and the River Usk forms part of the community's southern boundary. In the north-west part of the village, across the railway bridges, the land rises sharply up to Lodge Wood and its hill fort. The community's western boundary is formed by the A4042 road (Heidenheim Drive) and the northern boundary partly by the Malthouse Road and partly by the Afon Llwyd river which flows southwards to the River Usk along the village's eastern side. Across the River Usk from Caerleon, to the south-east and east, St Julian's Park, the village of Christchurch and the upland region around Christchurch Hill as far as the M4 motorway and the A449 road are also within the community.

Education

A large campus of the University of Wales, Newport is located in Caerleon including student accommodation blocks. The secondary school is Caerleon Comprehensive. The primary schools are Caerleon Endowed Infants and Juniors and Caerleon Lodge Hill Infants and Juniors.
Education is generally conducted in the English language in schools but at least a mandatory Welsh language content must be provided under the Welsh education curriculum. There are no Welsh-medium education schools in Caerleon but there are two primary schools elsewhere in Newport; Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd in Hartridge and Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael in Bettws. The nearest Welsh-medium secondary school is Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw in Trevethin, Pontypool.

Housing

Historically housing was largely located between Caerleon Bridge and the University of Wales Caerleon Campus along with a small number of houses on the east bank of the River Usk. A number of substantial housing developments have been created to the West of Caerleon: Lodge Hill, Home Farm, Roman Reach, Trinity View, Brooklea and The Brades as well as smaller cluster developments near the centre of the village. Substantial housing developments in nearby Ponthir and Cwmbran has also increased traffic congestion in Caerleon.

Sport

The Caerleon ward is home to the Celtic Manor Resort, location of the 2010 Ryder Cup. Caerleon also has a good quality 9-hole municipal golf course, driving range and golf clubhouse. However, during winter months the golf course is prone to flooding due to its location alongside the River Usk.

The association football club Caerleon A.F.C. is based in Caerleon along with two rugby union clubs; Newport High School Old Boys RFC and Caerleon RFC whose grounds are less than a mile apart and who are known for their fierce rivalry.
Caerleon Bowls Club has a good quality outdoor green. Caerleon has one chapter of the Academy of Historical Fencing, a western martial arts group who study and practise fencing with the weapons and styles of medieval and renaissance Europe. The club trains on the University Campus and also has two Chapters in Bristol.

Culture and community

Caerleon has hosted an arts festival in July each year since 2002, which includes tree sculptors from around the world. Many of the sizeable sculptures are retained around Caerleon as a Sculpture park and local landmarks. The arts festival coincides with the Roman military re-enactment in the amphitheatre which demonstrates Roman military armour, infantry tactics, cavalry tactics, equipment and siege engines such as ballistae.

Live music events and Visual arts are staged at venues in the town including plays at the open-air Roman Amphitheatre in summer.
An informative and wide ranging history of the town was published in 1970 by local amateur historian Primrose Hockey MBE, who was a founder member of Caerleon Local History Society and member of Gwent Local History Council. An archive of her local history collection is kept by the Gwent Record Office.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport

It is one of the largest modern housing estates in Europe.

The ward is bounded by Malpas to the east, the city boundary with Torfaen to the north, Rogerstone to the west, and the M4 motorway and Allt-yr-yn to the south.

The estate was built around the 17th St. David's church in Bettws, which is the likely origin of the name 'Bettws', a place of prayer or private chapel. St David's is a grade two listed building and is currently in need of a £40,000 renovation. John Frost, who led Chartist protests in Newport for universal suffrage in the 1830s (the Newport Rising), is alleged to have married at the church.

The housing estate was built in the 1960s, and the large majority of houses are identical in plan and design. 51.8% of housing is privately owned, and 42.6% is rented from either the Newport City Council or local housing associations, such as Charter Housing.

The roads in the estate are all named after rivers. Bettws RFC is a rugby union team playing in the Welsh Division Five East. Malpas Cricket Club is also situated on Bettws Lane in Bettws. Newport Civil Service F.C. are a football team located in Bettws playing in the Welsh Football League.

In recent years it has benefited greatly from the introduction of sporting facilities such as new football pitches.

Links

Newport, Wales, UK

Newport City Council

Wards of Newport
