The best type of pillow for a child is one that is firm, low loft, and allergen-free.

Exploring the world, making new friends, learning life skills — being a kid is basically a full-time job. All that work makes quality rest a necessity, so it’s critical to ensure your child’s nighttime environment promotes a deep, restorative slumber.

The right pillow can make all the difference, especially when it comes to supporting healthy sleep habits for your children. But you may wonder: what type of pillow is best for a child?

The short answer is: one that is firm, low loft, and allergen-free.1 But since children of different ages have different needs, it also depends.

Let’s take a deeper look at what makes for an ideal children’s pillow.

Understanding Children’s Sleep Needs

Children require far more sleep than adults overall. According to experts, children thrive when their total sleep time falls somewhere between the following ranges (based on age)2:

Infants – 12-16 hours (naps count)

Toddlers – 11-14 hours (naps count)

Preschoolers – 10-13 hours (naps optional)

Grade schoolers – 9-12 hours

High schoolers – 8-10 hours

When you add it up, this is an extraordinary amount of time spent in bed, and their pillow is there for every second of it — choose one that maximizes their natural flow.

Importance of Proper Support

The spine serves as a superhighway for our nerve signals and links the brain with the rest of the body.3 It connects our bones and muscles. It also supports our head, which carries our most important asset: the brain.3

If you’ve ever woken up with a crick in your neck, you know how it feels when things get out of whack. Maybe neck or back pain has even disturbed your sleep. Since children spend more time asleep than adults, there’s an even greater possibility of insufficient support causing pain and disturbing the sleep or growth process. This is why selecting the best pillow that provides proper support is essential for a child’s development.

Plus the lion’s share of children’s development occurs while asleep — this is when human growth hormone levels are highest.4When it’s time for growth to occur, you want the spine aligned.

Role of a Good Pillow in Sleep Quality

Besides maintaining alignment, high quality bed pillows also boost sleep quality. For children, the perfect pillow can mean the difference between a restless night and a night of rejuvenating sleep.

A top-notch pillow serves slumber by5:

Relieving pressure on the head, neck, and shoulders (keeping you pain-free)

Offering a soothing sensation

Reducing snoring, which disrupts sleep rhythms and stems from strained neck muscles

When their sleep environment is cozy and inviting, children have a much easier time falling and staying asleep. This paves the way for a full night of healthy development.

Key Factors in Choosing a Pillow

There’s a wide array of pillows out there, so it helps to take stock of a few different factors when choosing one for your child.

Let’s take a look at what to consider before settling on a pillow.

Age and Developmental Stage

The most important factor is your child’s age and level of development.

Infants under two years, for example, should avoid using pillows entirely, as they can pose safety concerns.1

Once toddlerhood arrives, pillows become an important feature of the bedtime landscape. An adult-sized pillow won’t be safe for them, however. Toddler pillows should be1:

Miniature-sized

Low loft (three inches thick, or less)

Firm (to avoid the risk of suffocation that comes with soft pillows)

The transition from a pillow-free sleep space to one with a pillow won’t happen at the same time for every child. Once they approach 2 years of age, keep an eye on your little one’s sleep habits. If you spot your child resting their head on blankets or stuffed toys, it’s time to introduce a pillow.1

As they grow, their sleeping position may change, so having a pillow that supports their new sleep patterns is essential. Older children (8-10 and up) can transition to larger pillows with medium loft (between 3-5 inches thick) to accommodate their growing bodies. Learn more about pillow height (loft) in our blog.

Once your child reaches their early teens, it’s time to graduate to an adult-sized pillow.

Material and Fillings

Sweat and saliva easily transfer from our bodies to our pillows as we sleep. This is even more common with children as they pay less attention to hygiene than adults.

Kids may also do things like:

Carry their pillows around the house as a comfort object

Nap on the couch with them

Incorporate them into games (like pillow fights)

The right material not only ensures durability but also contributes to maintaining healthy sleep habits. Since children’s pillows work overtime, choose a material that’s simple to clean and resists bacteria. Our low loft memory foam pillow, which includes a removable polyester cover for easy cleaning, is an excellent choice.

When it comes to filling (the pillow’s interior support), you also have a few options:

Memory foam – Memory foam possesses an incredible power: to mold itself to the shape of your head and neck.6 Memory foam does trap heat, but a high quality cooling memory foam pillow like the Casper Foam Pillow with Snow Technology, wicks away warmth and moisture.

Cotton – One of the most widely used filling types, cotton is supportive, yet soft. It’s also known for its resistance to dust mites and mold,7 as well as its breathability and capacity to regulate body heat.8

Latex – Considered the firmest filling type, latex also resists dust mites and mold.7 Its stability is a big plus for anyone needing extra neck support. Latex also helps to regulate temperature, making it an ideal choice for hot sleepers.7

These are far from the only filling types available, but they’re some of the top choices for little ones.

Hypoallergenic Options

Finally, you’ll want to consider allergies. Some children may be more sensitive to their pillow’s materials, so you’ll want to safeguard their sleep by preventing reactions.

Of the three types of pillows, memory foam pillows, because they are synthetic, are the least likely to trigger allergies.

You can still find certified hypoallergenic pillows of all varieties, however. These will be fortified with additional resistance to:

Mold

Dust mites

Bacteria

If your child struggles with allergies, going with a certified hypoallergenic option is a wise choice.

Practical Tips for Pillow Selection

A pillow is a deeply intimate part of our lives. Choosing one for a child is an opportunity to make a subtle but powerful impact on their development.

To make that decision simpler, keep the following tips in mind.

Involve Your Child in the Choice

The simplest way to discover the perfect fit is to let your child lead the way. Present the possibility of a pillow as an exciting badge of maturity and invite them to help you pick one out. If they are hesitant about the prospect, try gradually introducing the pillow during their bedtime routine.

A child will be much more likely to incorporate a pillow into their sleep if they feel a sense of agency in the process.

Try Different Options

The first pillow you choose may not finish as the winning candidate. If your little one doesn’t gel with their first pillow, it’s fine to swap it out for a different option. Perhaps memory foam is a better fit. Maybe an unforeseen allergy develops.

Whatever the issue, keep experimenting with different options until you find one that clicks with your child and reliably summons a peaceful slumber.

For toddlers, the low-loft Casper Foam Pillow is a fantastic starting point, and when it’s time for a mid-loft lift in the grade school years, the Hybrid Pillow is up to the task.

Signs of an Unsuitable Pillow

When evaluating a pillow choice, watch for clues — there are a few common signs that a pillow may not be an ideal match for your little one.

Discomfort and Poor Sleep Quality

The purpose of a pillow is to encourage healing sleep, so if your child reports that their new bedtime companion is uncomfortable, that’s a major red flag.

Children may not always verbalize their discomfort, however. They also may not understand the reason for it — the situation requires some sleuthing on your part. There’s an issue if your child:

Regularly states that their neck hurts or is stiff

Suddenly has trouble falling asleep

Abruptly replaces the pillow with a stuffed animal or wadded-up blanket

If any of these issues pop up, simply experiment with a different pillow type until you come across one that works.

Allergic Reactions

Although discomfort is more common, allergic reactions can also be a concern. Pay attention if your little one suddenly develops one of the following:

Itchy rash on their face or neck

Persistent sneezing

Nagging cough

In these cases, something about their new pillow may not agree with them. Take stock of the materials and filling, and swap it out for a totally new pillow type to see if the symptoms resolve.

Of course, if you try several varieties of pillow and the allergies continue, there’s a different cause and you should investigate further.

Choosing the Right Pillow with Casper

Standard Pillowcase Sizes

Pillowcases come in a range of standard sizes, each tailored to fit specific pillow dimensions. Whether you love the plush comfort of oversized pillows or lean toward a more traditional feel, knowing your options ensures you pick the perfect pillowcase for your sleeping position.

Below, we explore the standard pillowcase sizes.

Standard Size

The standard size pillowcase is 20 inches by 26 inches, or 51 centimeters by 66 centimeters.

It fits comfortably on twin and twin XL mattresses, and two standard pillows can be placed side by side on full and queen mattresses.

Standard pillowcases are a versatile choice, designed with extra room to comfortably fit both standard and queen pillows. Their slightly larger dimensions make them adaptable and convenient for various pillow sizes, too.

Super Standard Size

The super standard size pillowcase is 20 inches by 28 inches, or 51 centimeters by 71 centimeters.

Accordingly, these pillowcase dimensions are two inches longer than the standard size, providing a more relaxed fit around your pillow.

This size is perfect if you like a little extra room for your pillow, ensuring it stays snugly covered all night long. Plus, the added space promotes breathability, keeping you cool and comfortable as you drift off to sleep.

Queen Size

Queen size pillows are 20 inches by 30 inches, or 51 centimeters by 76 centimeters.

Queen-size pillows are ideal for queen and king-sized beds, offering extra length for added comfort. If you’re a side sleeper or tend to toss and turn, this size gives you the support and space you need for a restful night’s sleep.

A Queen-size pillowcase is designed to fit snugly over these larger pillows, ensuring your pillow is just as snug as you are.

King Size

King-size pillows are the largest standard pillow size, at 20 inches by 36 inches, or 51 centimeters by 92 centimeters.

They’re designed to crown California King beds, offering excellent support for those who prefer to use all six feet of the mattress.

For these pillows, a King-size pillowcase will provide the perfect fit, ensuring your pillow stays securely covered while maintaining a polished look. With ample coverage, these pillowcases enhance comfort and add a touch of luxury to your bed, making sure you sleep like royalty.

Why Pillowcase Size Matters

While it may seem like a minor detail compared to the rest of your bedding, choosing the right pillowcase size is crucial for several reasons.

Comfort

A properly sized pillowcase ensures that the pillow fits snugly, preventing it from slipping out or bunching up during the night. This is particularly important for maintaining the support your neck and head need for a restful sleep. A loose pillowcase can lead to discomfort, as it may cause the pillow to shift, disrupting your sleep cycle.

Hygiene

Pillowcases protect pillows from dirt, sweat, and allergens, so a well-fitting pillowcase helps keep the pillow clean and prolongs its lifespan. When a pillowcase is too large, it can allow these substances to seep through, potentially leading to the accumulation of dust mites and bacteria.

Regularly washing your pillowcase is key, but having the correct size makes this task easier and more effective.

Aesthetic Appeal

The right pillowcase size can improve the overall look of your bedding. This means that a well-fitted pillowcase complements your bedroom decor and adds to the visual appeal of your bedroom.

Pillow Lifespan

Using the correct size pillowcase can also prolong the lifespan of your pillows. Learn more about how often to replace your pillows in our blog.

A loose or oversized pillowcase can cause friction and wear, leading to premature deterioration. By ensuring that your pillowcases match the dimensions of your pillows, you protect your investment in quality sleep.

How to Measure Your Pillow for the Right Fit

Measuring your pillow is essential for finding the perfect pillowcase. Here’s how to do it:

Measuring Tips

Measuring your pillow accurately is essential for finding the perfect pillowcase that ensures comfort and functionality. Here are some tips on how to measure your pillow for the right fit:

Begin by gathering your tools – To begin, you’ll need a soft measuring tape, which is flexible enough to contour to the shape of your pillow. If you don’t have a measuring tape, a ruler or yardstick can also work.

Lay the pillow flat – Place your pillow on a flat surface, such as a bed or table. Make sure it’s fully fluffed and not compressed, as this will give you the most accurate measurements.

Measure the length and width – Using the measuring tape, measure the length of the pillow from one seam to the other. Then, measure the width in the same manner. For standard and queen pillows, these measurements are straightforward. However, for specialty pillows like body or pregnancy pillows, measure the longest and widest points to capture their unique shapes.

Don’t forget about pillow thickness – While length and width are crucial, don’t forget to consider the thickness of your pillow. Some pillowcases are designed with deeper pockets to accommodate thicker pillows, ensuring a secure fit.

By following these steps, you can accurately measure your pillow and confidently choose a pillowcase that’s a perfect match.

Considerations for Different Pillow Types

If you’re looking for a case for a specialty pillow, here are some considerations you’ll want to keep in mind for different types of pillows:

Standard and queen pillows – These are straightforward to measure, as they have standard dimensions.

Specialty pillows – For specialty pillows like body pillows or pregnancy pillows, consider their unique shapes. Measure the longest and widest points to ensure you find a compatible pillowcase.

Travel and throw pillows – These can vary significantly in size, so always measure before purchasing a pillowcase.

The size of your pillowcase is not just a matter of preference; it significantly affects your comfort, hygiene, aesthetics, and the longevity of your pillows. Choosing the right size is a simple yet essential step toward enhancing your sleep experience, whether you’re in bed, napping on your couch, or catching some Z’s mid-flight.

To keep your fitted sheet on your bed, choose the right size for your mattress and use tools like sheet clips, suspenders, or velcro strips for extra security. High-quality sheets with deep pockets also help ensure a snug fit.

In recent years, social media has become enamored with a new trend: #oddlysatisfying.1 From cucumbers sliced into perfectly equal pieces to pressure washers erasing grime from smudged-up sidewalks, our brains delight when things line up right.

Another #oddlysatisfying candidate? A set of fitted sheets that hug your mattress perfectly. That’s not even odd — just an unbeatable feeling.

But maybe you’ve invested in some fitted sheets that seem dead set on popping off. Or maybe, despite your best efforts, every morning is a lumpy mess. That’s the opposite of satisfying.

To keep fitted sheets on your bed, choose high quality bed sheets that are the right size for your mattress. You can also employ specialized tools like sheet clips or velcro strips.

If you’re wondering how to keep fitted sheets on bed corners, read on to discover the top 6 ways to achieve a tailor-made fit.

#1 Choose the Right Size

A fitted sheet comes equipped with elastic corners that tightly squeeze your mattress. By keeping your bed in a perpetual bear hug, a fitted sheet acts as a protective shield and provides a smooth, cozy base layer for your flat sheet. Learn more about the fitted vs flat sheet in our blog.

To achieve a satisfyingly snug fit, you’ll first need to determine your mattress size. If you don’t know how big your mattress is, you can either use a measuring tape to determine its length and width, or remove the current sheets and search for a sizing tag.

Mattresses come in the following bed dimensions:

Twin (38” wide, 75” long)

Twin XL (38” wide, 80” long)

Full (53” wide, 75” long)

Queen (60” wide, 80” long)

King (76” wide, 80” long)

California King (72” wide, 84” long)

Once you’ve zeroed in on the size, you’ll also want to verify your mattress thickness. Fitted sheets come with elastic pockets that need to cover the mattress corners completely — they can’t do this if the mattress is too deep.

Mattresses come in five degrees of thickness:

Low profile (2-5” tall)

Slim profile (2-8” tall)

Standard profile (8-12” tall)

Thick profile (12-20” tall)

Extra thick profile (20” or greater)

Learn more about which thickness is right for you in our mattress thickness guide.

Additionally, if you use a comfy mattress topper or a mattress pad, this will increase the thickness, so make sure to account for it when selecting your sheet set.

To guarantee a perfect match, choose sheets that match both the dimensions and depth of your mattress. If you have a thicker mattress or an adjustable bed, consider options with extra deep pockets to prevent sheet slippage.

#2 Use Sheet Clips or Straps

For a little extra security, you can fasten your sheet’s corners down with specially designed sheet clips. Or, if you’re the rugged DIY type, you can hunt down a set of four elastic straps and sew them onto the corners to hold your sheet in place.

Elastic straps can help keep the sheet taut by eliminating excess fabric that might cause the fitted sheet to pop off during the night. These straps are especially useful if you have a mattress topper or a mattress pad that adds extra height to your mattress.

#3 Try Sheet Suspenders

You can also keep your sheets taut (and give them a dash of fashion flair) by using sheet suspenders, which do as fine a job on bedding as they do on hipster slacks.

Simply attach the suspenders to all four corners of your sheet and cross them underneath the mattress (in the shape of an “X”). Most sheet suspenders are adjustable, so they can save you time on measurements and help you avoid the frustration of a slipping sheet.

#4 Employ Non-Slip Rug Grippers

Another unsatisfying feeling? When a rug slides around under your feet. To combat this, you can place non-slip rug grippers at the corners of your carpet to help it stick to the floor.

You can take the same approach to your sheets. Pick up a set of rug grippers and place them under the mattress where the bottoms of your fitted sheet pockets would go. Add the bedding and press the corners of your fitted sheet against the grippers — now they’re not going anywhere.

#5 Use Velcro Strips

Velcro burst onto the scene in 1955,2 and it’s been holding things together ever since. Fix wonky sheets by picking up some velcro strips and sewing the rough side onto your mattress corners, and the soft side into your sheets.

Line up your sheet with the correct mattress corners and choose one corner to designate as your “guide.” Clip a small piece out of this velcro piece (or mark it another way) so you can easily orient your sheet when putting it on.3

A comfortable and hygienic sleep environment can transport you to a world of better rest.

For that, there are two items to keep in your nighttime arsenal: mattress protectors and fitted sheets.

A mattress protector is designed to fend your mattress from unwanted intruders, while a fitted sheet provides a comfortable and stylish layer for sleeping, keeping you cozy while enhancing your bedroom’s aesthetic. Nonetheless, both items are essential for a good night’s sleep.

Whether you’re guarding against spills, allergens, or simply ensuring a snug fit, understanding the difference between a mattress protector vs fitted sheet is key to crafting your perfect sleep sanctuary. Pull up your covers, and let’s dive in.

What is a Mattress Protector?

So, what is a mattress protector? It is a thin, breathable barrier designed to shield your mattress from various harmful substances, including moisture, dirt, and allergens. Mattress protectors typically feature an elastic edge, similar to a fitted bed sheet, ensuring a snug fit over your mattress without adding significant bulk.

Purpose and Benefits

Here’s a glimpse at the superpowers a mattress protector brings to your bed:

Protection against stains – Mattress protectors shield your bed from spills, sweat, and other liquids that could wreak havoc on your mattress. They’re not just about cleanliness — they’re also crucial for preserving the warranty of a new mattress, ensuring your investment stays protected and covered.

Allergen defense – Allergens, like dust mites, can cause a range of symptoms, from a runny nose to itchy, watery eyes.1 Fortunately, mattress protectors act as a barrier against dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens, helping to create a cleaner, healthier sleep environment that keeps you breathing easy night after night. Learn more about the best sheets for allergies in our blog.

Extended mattress life – By guarding against wear and tear, mattress protectors can dramatically extend the lifespan of your mattress, saving you money and ensuring that your bed remains a comfortable haven for years to come.

Temperature regulation – Many mattress protectors are designed with breathable materials that help regulate body temperature, ensuring a comfortable sleep. The Casper Breathable Mattress Protector weaves polyester, tencel, and spandex for a cooling sleep experience.

A mattress protector is a versatile ally, offering a range of benefits to keep your bed clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. With so much to gain, it’s worth taking the time to find the perfect protector that matches your specific needs.

Types of Mattress Protectors

Here’s a quick rundown of the main types of mattress protectors, helping you choose the one that best aligns with your nighttime needs and keeps your sleep sanctuary in top shape:

Waterproof mattress protectors – These protectors feature a waterproof layer, often made from materials like polyurethane or vinyl, that prevents liquids from penetrating the mattress. They’re ideal for households with children or pets, as they guard against spills, accidents, and moisture, ensuring your mattress remains clean and dry. The Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector combines polyester and thermoplastic polyurethane for added protection.

Non-waterproof mattress protectors – While not completely waterproof, these protectors are water-resistant and can handle minor spills. They provide a level of protection against moisture and are typically made from breathable fabrics, making them suitable for those who want some protection without the added bulk of a waterproof layer.

Encasement protectors – Designed to cover the entire mattress, including the sides and bottom, encasement protectors offer maximum protection against allergens, dust mites, and bed bugs. They can be a great option for allergy sufferers, as they create a barrier that prevents these irritants from entering the mattress.

Cooling mattress protectors – Designed with temperature-regulating materials, a cooling mattress protector helps keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

By keeping your bed clean and dry, choosing the right type of mattress protector can significantly enhance your sleep quality and prolong the life of your mattress.

What is a Fitted Sheet?

A fitted sheet is a type of bed sheet that has elasticized corners, allowing it to fit snugly over the mattress. Unlike flat sheets, fitted sheets are designed to stay in place, providing a smooth and comfortable sleeping surface. Learn more about a fitted vs flat sheet in our blog.

Purpose and Benefits

Here’s a snapshot of what fitted sheets bring to the table (and why you might want to grab one for your own mattress):

Comfort – Fitted sheets provide a soft and smooth surface to sleep on, enhancing the overall comfort of your bed. Pairing them with a mattress pad or comfy mattress topper can add extra comfort and support.

Neat appearance – Fitted sheets help maintain a tidy look for your bed, as they stay securely in place and don’t bunch up.

Ease of use – Fitted sheets are easy to put on and take off, making bed-making a quick and hassle-free task.

Fitted sheets combine functionality, comfort, and aesthetics, making them a must-have for any bed.

Types of Fitted Sheets

When it comes to fitted sheets, there’s more variety than you might think. Choosing the right type can make a big difference in your overall sleep experience.

With that in mind, let’s dive into the various types of fitted sheets available, so you can discover the perfect match for your bed and sleep style:

Standard fitted sheets – These are the most common type of fitted sheets, and they’re designed to fit regular mattresses, typically with a depth of about 14 inches. They’re crafted from various materials, including cotton and polyester blends, making them a fantastic everyday sheet.

Deep pocket fitted sheets – If you have a thicker mattress — maybe one with added padding or a pillow-top — you’ll want deep pocket fitted sheets. These sheets can accommodate mattresses that are 16 to 22 inches deep, ensuring a snug fit that keeps your sheets in place throughout the night.

Adjustable bed fitted sheets – For those with adjustable beds, these fitted sheets are specially designed to stretch and move with the bed’s ever-changing positions. They often feature extra elastic or a more flexible fabric, ensuring they stay in place no matter how you adjust your sleeping position. Check out our line of adjustable bed frames!

Luxury fitted sheets – If you’re looking to elevate your sleep experience, luxury fitted sheets made from high-quality materials like Egyptian cotton or bamboo are worth considering. They offer softness and durability, making your bed feel like a five-star hotel.

Cooling fitted sheets – For hot sleepers, cooling fitted sheets are a game-changer. Made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics, these sheets help regulate your body temperature, keeping you comfortable throughout the night. Our Hyperlite collection features the best sheets for hot sleepers.

Key Differences Between Mattress Protectors and Fitted Sheets

While mattress protectors and fitted sheets are both must-haves for your bedroom, they each play a unique role and come with their own set of features.

Here’s a clear-cut breakdown of the key differences between these essential items.

Material and Design

Mattress protectors are typically made from materials designed to provide a barrier against spills, allergens, and dust mites. Common materials include waterproof fabrics like polyurethane, cotton, or polyester blends. They often have a fitted design that wraps around the mattress, similar to fitted sheets, but they may also feature zippers for full encasement.

On the other hand, fitted sheets are primarily made from softer fabrics like cotton, linen, or microfiber, focusing on comfort and breathability. Learn more about cotton vs microfiber sheets and cotton vs linen sheets in our blog.

They come in various thread counts and textures, allowing you to choose based on your personal preference for softness and warmth. Fitted sheets are designed to fit snugly over the mattress, with elastic corners to keep them in place during the night.

Functionality and Use

The primary function of a mattress protector is to safeguard your mattress from spills, stains, and allergens. It acts as a barrier, extending the life of your mattress and maintaining a clean sleeping environment. Many protectors are also hypoallergenic, making them ideal for allergy sufferers.

In contrast, fitted sheets are all about comfort. They provide a soft surface to sleep on and come in various styles and colors to enhance your bedroom decor. While they do offer some level of protection against dust and dirt, they don’t provide the same level of waterproofing or allergen defense as mattress protectors.

Maintenance and Care

Mattress protectors generally require less frequent washing than fitted sheets, since they’re designed to shield the mattress. However, they should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain their protective qualities. Learn how to wash a mattress protector in our blog.

Instead, fitted sheets need regular washing, typically every one to two weeks, to keep them fresh and hygienic. They can be machine-washed and dried, making them easy to maintain.

When to Use a Mattress Protector

Investing in a mattress protector can support your sleep by providing an extra layer of protection for your mattress. But when exactly should you use one? Let’s explore the key reasons and specific scenarios where a mattress protector is essential.

Protection Needs

One of the primary reasons to use a mattress protector is to safeguard your mattress from spills and stains. If you enjoy breakfast in bed or have young children or pets, accidents are bound to happen. A waterproof mattress protector can prevent liquids from seeping into the mattress, which can lead to mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors.

Additionally, if you suffer from allergies, a mattress protector is a must. Many protectors are designed to be hypoallergenic, blocking dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens that can accumulate in your mattress over time.2

Specific Scenarios

There are several specific scenarios where using a mattress protector is particularly beneficial. For instance, if you’ve recently purchased a new mattress, using a protector right away can help maintain its condition and warranty.

Another scenario is during seasonal changes. If you live in a humid climate, a mattress protector can help prevent moisture buildup, which can attract pests and allergens. Similarly, if you’re moving or storing your mattress, a protector can shield it from dust and damage.

When to Use a Fitted Sheet

Fitted sheets are a staple in any bedding setup, providing both comfort and functionality. Here’s a look at how they can support your comfort needs and when to use them.

Comfort Needs

Fitted sheets are designed to create a soft, cozy surface for sleeping. Made from various materials like cotton, linen, or microfiber, they come in different thread counts and textures, allowing you to choose what feels best against your skin.

A high-quality fitted sheet can enhance your sleep experience by providing breathability and softness, making it easier to drift off into a restful snooze.

Specific Scenarios

There are several scenarios where fitted sheets shine. For instance, if you’re hosting guests, having fresh, clean fitted sheets on the beds is crucial for a welcoming atmosphere. They’re also perfect for seasonal changes — switching to lighter fitted and flat sheets in the summer can keep you cool, while flannel sheets in the winter provide warmth.

Additionally, if you have kids or pets, fitted sheets can help protect your mattress from dirt and spills, especially when paired with a mattress protector.

Choosing the Right Bedding with Casper

Ultimately, the winning strategy is to embrace both: a mattress protector for unbeatable protection and a fitted sheet for ultimate comfort. By pairing these two essentials, you can craft a sleep space that’s cozy, clean, and irresistibly inviting, setting the stage for truly restful nights.

Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite.

But, what happens when the bed bugs do bite?

Bed bugs are tiny insect infiltrators that love to inhabit little nooks and crannies, especially in beds and bed sheets, as their name suggests. You can spot bed bugs outright; other signs of infestation include bites, reddish stains, and bed bug eggs on sheets.

At Casper, we help you achieve the best sleep possible — that includes educating you on pests that go bump in the night.

First, learn how to identify bed bugs and bed bug eggs. Then, discover ways to strengthen your bed bug battle strategy and build up your defenses for peaceful, pest-free sleep.

Recognizing Bed Bug Eggs

To defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy — including what they look like, and where you might find them. Catch bed bug eggs before they hatch with these insights.

Physical Characteristics

Bed bug eggs are tiny — about one millimeter in diameter.1 They can easily fit on the tip of a sharpened pencil or sewing needle.

If your eyes are keen enough to spot a bed bug egg, you can further identify it based on these characteristics1:

Pearly white color

Small black eye spot (if older than five days)

Bed bug eggs can be even harder to spot when stuck to light-colored sheets or fabric, so you need to know where to look.

Common Locations on Sheets

Bed bugs enjoy small, dark spaces. You’ll most likely find both bugs and their eggs in the folds and seams of your bed sheets.2

You may also find them on or in your3:

Box spring

Mattress, especially the mattress seam

Pillowcase seams (learn more about bed bugs in pillows in our blog)

Bed frame

Nearby chairs or other furniture

Clothing left on the floor

Signs of Bed Bug Infestation

If bed bug eggs are so hard to spot, how else can you catch an infestation? Keep your eyes peeled for these subtle signs.

Visual Indicators

In addition to bed bug eggs, inspect your bed sheets for3:

Reddish stains (a side-effect of blood-sucking)

Bed bug excrement, which appears as tiny dark specks

Shed skins from bed bug nymphs, typically pale yellow in color

And of course, check for bed bugs themselves: reddish-brown, apple-seed-sized insects.1

Bites and Skin Reactions

Bed bugs feed on the nearest living organisms to grow and reproduce. When you snuggle under the bedsheets, that’s you.

These little bloodsuckers can leave small bite marks that appear as itchy welts, often trailing in a line down your face, neck, arms, or hands.4

You can easily confuse bed bug bites for other skin conditions if you don’t know what to look for. Bed bug bites can resemble3:

Other types of bug bites, such as mosquito or flea bites

Eczema rashes

Hives

Some people don’t react to bed bug bites at all. For these reasons, don’t rely on bites as the only sign of bed bug infestation.

Effective Removal Methods

Bed bugs have made their move and taken over your bed sheets — go on the offensive with these bed bug removal strategies.

Washing and Drying Techniques

Bed bugs can’t survive temperatures over 113 degrees Fahrenheit.3 To effectively remove bed bugs from your most infested items, wash and dry them on high heat settings5:

Wash cycle – At least 140 degrees for 90 minutes

Dry cycle – High heat for 30 minutes

Remember to transfer your items from the bedroom to the laundry in tightly sealed plastic bags to avoid spreading pests to other areas of your home.

Vacuuming and Steaming

Remove bed bugs from items you can’t toss in the wash with vacuums and heat steamers. Turn steamer settings to high heat, at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit.6 Attach a diffuser to prevent airflow from scattering bed bugs away.

Note that vacuums can physically remove bed bugs from an area, but won’t kill them. Promptly dispose of bug-filled vacuum bags so they can’t find their way back into bed with you.

Using Bed Bug Sprays

Non-chemical bed bug removal methods minimize hazard risks, but they don’t always finish the job. If your first removal attempts fail, you can try using pesticides.

An effective — and safe — bed bug pesticide is one that6:

Has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Specifically lists bed bugs as the intended use

These factors indicate a product’s general safety, but you must also use it properly. Alert your household before spraying any pesticides, and follow the label’s exact instructions.

If you feel nervous about using bed bug sprays, don’t hesitate to contact a pest control specialist for professional help. For them, bed bugs are familiar foes.

Preventive Measures

You did it: you banished the bed bugs. How do you keep them from infiltrating your home once more? Maintain an impenetrable defense with these simple bed bug prevention techniques.

Regular Cleaning

Perform these cleaning strategies regularly to prevent a bed bug infestation — and to spot one faster:

Wash and heat dry all bed linens, including sheets, pillowcases, duvets, and blankets

Promptly wash clothes that touch the floor

Clean laundry hampers

Vacuum bedroom floors and baseboards

Inspect sheets, mattress seams, and box springs for signs of infestation

After traveling, check clothing and luggage for signs of bed bugs

Mattress Encasements

Bed bugs can’t make your mattress their home if it’s sealed tight. Consider purchasing durable encasements for your mattress, such as mattress protectors, and a mattress foundation.

If you had a recent bed bug infestation, leave encasements on for at least a year to ensure all your unwanted bed partners have died.6 Check encasements regularly for tears and holes — bed bugs can quickly breach a weak barrier. Learn more about how to get bed bugs out of a mattress in our blog.

Reducing Clutter

As you now know, bed bugs love their little hiding places. And despite their name, bed bugs will attempt to make their home in many areas, including in furniture, clothing, boxes, and more.

Reducing clutter will prevent your bedroom from becoming a pest’s playground. Keep these tidying tips in mind:

Store clothes away from the floor

Seal bed sheets and blankets in bags for storage

Promptly remove trash from your spaces

Store paper and cardboard away from the floor

Sleep Soundly with Casper

Realizing that you’re sharing your pillow with some uninvited guests might have you giving up on ever getting a good night’s sleep.

Bed bugs love to cuddle up inside pillows. Even if you have a spotless living space, it’s possible to unknowingly pick up a few hitchhikers while traveling and carry them home. All of a sudden, you now have a serious bed bug problem, infesting furniture, mattresses, and even pillows, where you lay your very own head.

Wondering how to spot bed bugs in pillows? The top 4 signs are:

Shed exoskeletons

Bed bug bite marks

Red stains on pillowcases

Musty odor

Hopefully, these troublesome critters haven’t paid you a visit, but if they have, we’re here with a comprehensive guide on what to look out for, and ways to win back a peaceful night’s slumber.

Recognizing the Signs of Bed Bugs in Pillows

Bed bugs are minuscule, blood-sucking insects that have mastered the art of concealment. Being nocturnal, they hide out during the day and emerge when night falls.1 While they can set up shop in any part of a bed, pillows are a favorite spot.2

Fortunately, they aren’t venomous and don’t spread disease1 — but they’re definitely gross.

There are four main symptoms of this age-old sleep nemesis.

#1 Fecal Marks & Shed Exoskeletons

Keep an eye out for tiny black spots (roughly the size of a period) on or around your pillows. These are likely bed bug droppings.1

Bed bugs also periodically shed the outer layer of their shell. These cast skins, which are oval-shaped and look similar to a live bed bug,3 will tend to cluster near the bugs’ home base.

#2 Bite Marks and Irritation

Often, bite marks on your body are the first clue that the critters have taken up residence in your pillow.

Bed bug bites commonly take the form of:

Raised bumps scattered in a random pattern

Pimple-esque lumps with a red center that lightens toward the edge

Blister-like bumps that contain clear fluid

Swollen patches of skin with several bumps clustered together

These bites often itch like crazy, although some lucky people don’t itch.4

It’s important to keep in mind that not everyone will react to bites,1 so if you don’t notice bite marks, but spot other signs, you may still have a bed bug infestation.

#3 Blood Stains on Pillowcases

Since bed bugs suck blood, they may leave droplets behind which stain the fabric of your pillowcase or the surrounding sheets.

Inspect your pillowcase and nearby sheets for small, rust-colored splotches, which can be signs of infested pillows. Learn more about bed bug eggs on sheets in our blog.

#4 Musty Odor

The final giveaway is a sweet scent, which many people describe as being similar to berries.5 This is the aroma of bed bug pheromones.

In the case of a severe infestation, you may notice an intense, metallic “rusty” smell.9 Any unexplained scent near your pillow is cause for investigation.

Steps to Confirm Bed Bug Presence

So, you’ve spotted some possible signs, but still aren’t 100% sure you’ve been paid a visit by a bed bug family. What can you do next?

Inspect Pillow Seams and Crevices

Bed bugs love to reside in tight, dark spaces.1 This makes pillowcase seams and crevices inviting hideouts.

Using a flash flight, carefully examine your entire pillow and pillowcase, taking the time to peel back the seams and look beneath any folds. Also check the area where the tag meets the pillow.

Adult bed bugs are1:

Reddish brown in color

Apple-seed-sized

Oval-shaped

Wingless

Even if you only spot one or two during the course of your search, there’s more where they came from, possibly even a colony of bed bug eggs waiting to hatch…

Use Detection Tools

In addition to a visual inspection, you can also use specialized tools designed to reveal a covert colony.

Methods include:

Pitfall traps – These go under your bed posts and block bed bugs’ upward path

Baited traps – Baited traps lure bugs into a receptacle

Keep in mind that these tools only serve to estimate the size of the infestation—they won’t eliminate bed bugs.

Effective Methods to Eliminate Bed Bugs from Pillows

Once you’ve zeroed in on the problem, there are a few tried-and-true methods to eradicate these unwelcome guests from your pillows:

Wash and dry at high temperatures – Wash your pillows and pillowcases, then toss them in the dryer at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit or above.7

Apply safe insecticide – Choose a bug killer formulated for use with bedding. Use sparingly. You’ll likely need to combine insecticide with other methods.

Encasement solutions – Installing a specially designed bed bug cover over your pillow and mattress helps prevent further bites by trapping them inside.8 Learn more about how to get bed bugs out of a mattress in our blog.

Call a professional – It can be pricey, but a trained exterminator or bed bug control team can make short work of bed bugs.

Preventative Measures

What’s even better than eliminating bed bugs? Putting out the no vacancy sign before they roll through.

The top two methods to keep bed biters from moving in are:

Regular cleaning and inspection – Keep your things organized and wash your pillow and pillowcase often. Watch with an eagle eye for any bed bug red flags.
Protective covers – Zip-up covers can keep bed bugs from taking up residence in your pillow if they do happen to come knocking.

To keep a split king mattress together, all you need to do is stabilize it with tools like non-slip pads, protect it with products like mattress toppers, and choose a long-lasting, quality mattress.

The split king bed may well be mattress royalty. Its construction marries ample space and customization — for couples who sleep together, it’s a match made in heaven.

The defining feature of a split king mattress size is the cleft down the middle, which divides the bed into two twin XL mattresses. If you have a well-made split king mattress, you shouldn’t feel too worried about the two twin mattresses coming apart. That said, most every type of mattress can be prone to shifting in the night — and over time.

Knowing how to keep split king mattresses together requires only a few simple, strategic interventions: stabilizing, protecting, and choosing a high-quality mattress. By taking these steps, you’ll achieve more security and minimum slippage to get your best night’s rest yet.

Step 1: Secure the Legs

Let’s take it from the top — or, in your bedding’s case, the bottom. Your bed’s mattress foundation is crucial for keeping those two parts of your split king-size mattress snug.

With that, your first step is to ensure your bed frame is secure. First, tighten the bolts on your foundation until your frame moves very little — there should be almost no wobbles when you mount or dismount your bed. For extra coverage, you can use furniture cups to stabilize each leg.

Step 2: Use Non-Slip Pads

Non-slip pads (also called “mattress grippers”) are a fine way to add more stability at a low price point1. These are layered on top of your bed’s foundation and below your mattress to minimize slippage. Mattress grippers are:

Made of rubber (usually) – Rubber helps introduce some friction between your foundation and your mattress.

Trimmable – Meaning, you can take a pair of scissors and use them to perfectly align your foundation and mattress.

Some people aren’t big fans of the rubbery smell some non-slip pads have. If that’s true for you, try checking out some foam options, which tend to be fairly odorless.

Step 3: Install a Bed Bridge

If your split king bed has been causing “princess and the pea syndrome” (i.e., you can feel the split beneath you, and it messes with your sleep), consider getting a bed bridge. A bed bridge is precisely what it sounds like: an accessory, typically made of foam, that bridges the gap between the two twin segments of your split king.

You’ll get the best results if you have two people to install your bed bridge. You’ll need to:

Wedge your split king as close together as possible.

Then, insert the bed bridge between them.

Many people find that bed bridges enhance comfort in addition to providing extra security.

Step 4: Connect the Frames

Some split king bed frames come with connectors that let you adjoin the two frames, forming a single, unified base. If your split king bed didn’t include them, you can purchase them separately.

Not only will adjoining the frames help keep your split mattresses snug, but they’ll also create a more secure sleeping surface.

Step 5: Add a Mattress Topper

Most people think of mattress toppers as a luxury — a bedtime bonus, if you will. But just as they can adjust a mattress’ surface to be softer or firmer, mattress toppers also add extra weight to your sleep setup. For split king sleepers, that’s often the secret ingredient for enhancing bed frame security.

Beyond stabilizing your bed setup, mattress toppers can also2:

Extend the life of your mattress – By alleviating some of the nightly stress caused by your body weight, toppers may help your mattress live a longer, more fulfilling life. In turn, you’ll save money on replacements without sacrificing your quality of rest.

Improve your bedroom hygiene – Mattresses can get dirty over time, whether by acquiring an odor or stains (we’re looking at you, midnight snackers). With a topper, dust, debris, and all else will meet another layer before they reach your mattress.

If you’re concerned adding all these layers will compromise the coolness of your bedding, fear not! The Casper Comfy Mattress Topper’s foam design is built to aerate, helping to transmit heat into your environment (and out of your bed) so you stay cool at night.

Step 6: Consider Adding a Headboard

Don’t have a headboard already? Now might be an excellent time to consider adding one.

Headboards can be attached to your bed frame to stabilize your frame when you justify the mattress against it. Not only will your mattress feel steadier, but it’ll be easier to maintain alignment — and, even better, make your quarters even more handsome.

(Psst! Casper attachable headboards make installation a breeze while adding alignment and good looks to your bedding. Use it with your existing bed frame or your Casper favorite and simplify your bed’s structure with minimum effort.)

Step 7: Make Time for Maintenance Checks

Periodic check-ups can go a long way when it comes to keeping your split king mattress together. Some care tips include:

Inspecting your bed frame – From time to time, it’s a smart idea to check out your bed frame to screen for loose hardware. Keeping them tuned up should help your bed frame stay secure.

Reposition your mattress – No matter how much traction they have, most mattresses tend to shift around with use. It can help to get in the habit of repositioning them when you make your bed. You can also take the opportunity to flip your mattresses, which may help give them more longevity.

Clean your mattress grippers – All parts of your bedding can get dirty over time, including your toppers, non-slip pads, and other accessories. Cleaning these regularly helps prevent build-up or dirt from accumulating, which may compromise their ability to grip.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Split King Mattress

We get it — mattress maintenance may not be a top priority for most. But with a bit more insight into how to choose and care for your split king model, don’t be surprised if you see a noticeable difference in your sleep.

#1 Opt for Foam (Rather Than Springs)

Foam mattresses are generally considered a better option for split mattress styles, for a few reasons:

They’ve got more give – Foam is more forgiving than springs are, contouring to your figure and weight. Because they limit motion transfer, you’ll likely find the split less noticeable than you would with a spring mattress.

They’re usually quieter – If you’ve ever slept on a spring mattress, you may be well aware of their signature squeaks. Sometimes, spring split king beds can defeat their intended purpose: creating the most serene possible environment for sleep partners. Learn more about foam vs spring mattresses in the Casper blog.

(BTW: All three Casper mattress styles are made with foam to ensure you’re supported no matter which size or style bed you choose).

#2 Flip Your Mattress

How often should you rotate your mattress? It’s recommended you rotate and flip your mattress about every 6 months. This can help offset unnecessary wear, sagging, or lumpiness. For split king mattress owners, mattress flipping is especially crucial: it helps ensure both sides of the bed get equal use.

#3 Choose Premium-Quality Bedding

If your split king mattress is a perfect fit for your needs, you can optimize the benefits by investing in high-quality bedding sets, like:

Pillowcases, sheets, and linens

Mattress protectors

Pillows

Quality bedding doesn’t just feel cozier — it also lasts longer. When it comes to fitted sheets, keep an eye out for those designed specifically for split king mattresses. These promise a snug fit and less budging while you sleep.

#4 Look Into Adjustable Bed Frames

Adjustable bed frames can optimize the advantages of having a split king mattress. These are designed to:

Support independent movement on either side of the bed

Provide luxe benefits like massage or an electronics/charging hub

Let you and your partner adjust the positions of each mattress as you’re most comfortable

Whether you want to prop up your feet, your head, or levitate with a Zero Gravity bed, split king adjustable bed frames offer more flexibility and support than ever.

#5 Don’t Skimp on Cleaning

Cleaning your mattress isn’t strictly a matter of averting those pesky (and very mysterious) stains. It extends a mattress’s lifespan and promotes a hygienic sleep environment.

When considering how to clean a mattress, it might look like:

Vacuuming it regularly to get rid of dust, debris, and allergens

Using a gentle detergent to spot-treat any stains

Letting your mattress rest outside to aerate it and dispel any accumulated moisture

Using a Casper mattress protector (one for each side of your split king bed) can also help limit your mattress’ noticeable wear and tear.

Care for Your Mattress with Casper

In the world of split king beds and bedding, Casper’s split king-size mattress reigns supreme. All three of Casper’s signature mattresses are available in the split king style: the One, the Hybrids, and the Maxes.

Elevating your legs with a pillow or adjustable bed frame while you sleep may help relieve IT band pain.

When you’ve got a sore, tender IT (iliotibial) band, you know getting some decent shut-eye can be a tough hurdle to clear. Your IT band is the single largest strip of fascia in your body, and it’s highly susceptible to overuse and injury in runners and cyclists (“iliotibial band syndrome”).1,2

If you’re working through IT band pain and want to minimize its interference with your sleep, propping up your legs while you sleep may be a key way to help you find IT band pain relief. By setting up your bed to offer maximum support, you’ll be helping your body optimize one of its main recovery strategies: a decent night’s sleep.3

Elevating Your Legs: Why It Helps with IT Band Pain

Keeping your legs lifted is the best sleeping position for IT band pain, and it’s often recommended as a recovery strategy for those who suffer from this type of discomfort.4 This usually requires sleeping on your back, which assists with spinal alignment. Specifically, a supine position helps your spine stay neutral throughout the night.

When your spine is neutral — i.e., allowing for the natural curvature of your spine — it alleviates stress on your IT band.4 It also supports the musculoskeletal structures connected to it, like your6:

Legs

Hips

Lower back

Back sleeping is also ideal for evenly distributing a person’s body weight. Sleeping on your back can make you less likely to exert added stress on your body’s pressure points, which can aggravate IT band pain.

One solution is to prop your legs up with a pillow while you sleep. Doing so helps alleviate pressure and tension in your hips, which can aggravate IT band pain.

If you tend to move around a lot in your sleep (and your pillow winds up on the floor), another strategy is to sleep on an adjustable bed frame. These can be modified to keep different parts of your body lifted to help maximize relaxation and minimize pain.

What Causes IT Band Pain During Sleep?

IT band pain is most common in runners and cyclists, but it can happen to anyone who’s physically active. Typically, it’s a sign that certain muscles are being underused, often a result of improper form or alignment.4

If you’re dealing with IT band pain while at rest, several factors may be contributing to the discomfort you feel, such as:

Your sleep posture – Certain positions, like side sleeping, may cramp the spine and hips in some people.

Unsupportive mattresses – Whether too firm or too hard, unsupportive mattresses can dump extra stress onto the body’s pressure points. The ideal mattress will be pliable yet firm, encouraging a more even weight distribution and proper spinal alignment.

While correcting certain sleep patterns can be important for IT band recovery, they’re most effective when complemented with physical exercises. Iliotibial band syndrome usually occurs when your IT band is compensating for other weaker zones of your body, so strengthening them could help lessen pain in the long term.

More Sleep Help for IT Band Pain

In addition to keeping your legs elevated, a few strategic interventions may assist with reducing IT band pain while you’re sleeping. If you’ve switched to supine sleeping and are satisfied with your mattress, these tips are well worth a try:

Try a pillow between your legs – If you’re finding it tough to break a side-sleeping habit, simply sliding a pillow between your knees may help you find pain relief. While not as optimal as back sleeping, this can encourage better hip alignment and lessen strain to your IT band.

Try body pillows – It may help to curl up with a full-body pillow while you sleep. This can help cushion your hips, legs, and spine, taking some of the pressure off your IT band.

Try a Zero Gravity bed – If you have an adjustable bed frame, Zero Gravity mode can be a dream for soothing IT band pain. The Casper Zero Gravity mode is designed specifically for muscle relaxation and reducing pressure, and it can help you feel lighter while you sleep.

Pre-sleep stretching – If you haven’t already adopted a daily stretching routine, introducing one before bedtime could be an ideal opportunity. Stretching your IT band and associated muscles may help relieve muscle tightness and minimize pain during the night. Likewise, doing some hip-strengthening exercises can sometimes help correct IT band strain.

Foam rollers – Using a foam roller pre-bedtime is another simple and relatively mindless way to massage your muscles. Simply lie on your side with the foam roller beneath your side and move yourself back and forth, focusing on tender or “sticky” points.

If you have lower back pain, certain sleeping positions are better than others. Sleeping on your side or back can help alleviate the tension and provide your spine with relief so you can get a good night’s rest.

A good night’s sleep should leave you feeling rejuvenated, replenished, and ready to take on the day, which is easier said than done when you’re confronted with lower back pain. You have a relaxing nighttime routine, read before bed, and even wind down with a glass of tart cherry juice — so what gives?1

When it comes to lower back pain, your sleeping position (also known as sleeping posture) may actually be the culprit (or, exacerbating an already uncomfortable situation). Fortunately, we’ve got the 411 on the correlation between lower back pain and sleep.

In this guide, we’ve broken down common causes of lower back pain and how it’s impacted by sleep, outlined the best (and worst) sleeping positions for this issue, and provided a list of tips to help enhance your sleep quality so you can feel your best after a night’s rest.

Understanding Lower Back Pain and Sleep

Living — and sleeping — with back pain can significantly impact your ability to drift into (and stay in) a high-quality slumber. This can significantly impact your well-being, as rest is a key component of not just mental but physical recovery.2

All said, a poor night’s rest can leave you waking up to more intense lower back pain.2

The first step to alleviating morning-time muscle misery is understanding the root cause of your lower back pain to eradicate the discomfort at its source.

Causes of Lower Back Pain

Discomfort felt in the lower back can range from a dull, aching sensation to a sharp, shooting pain, and identifying the root cause is an important step in helping to alleviate these feelings. Common causes for lower back pain include3:

Ligament strain

Arthritis

Ruptured discs

Scoliosis

Osteoporosis

If you’re experiencing pain from any of the aforementioned conditions, speak with a healthcare provider to assess solutions to mitigate your discomfort. All said, you may be able to tackle the affliction from the comfort of your own bed, too.

Your sleeping position — whether you’re a side sleeper with one leg at 90 degrees or a stomach sleeper with a crooked neck — can seriously impact the way your body feels when your alarm goes off.

How Sleep Impacts Back Pain

Sleep and lower back pain are two peas in a Princess and the Pea pod. In other words, poor-quality sleeping positions can significantly impact how well you rest and may contribute to ongoing discomfort.

One cross-sectional study that involved 9,611 participants found a correlation between back pain and poor sleep quality and duration.4 It’s a catch-22: The more your back tenses and throbs throughout the night, the poorer quality sleep you’re likely to experience — and, the worse sleep you get, the more likely you are to experience an achy back.

Fortunately, adjusting your sleeping posture may provide some lower back pain relief and create a more conducive environment for a restful night of sleep.

Best Sleeping Positions for Lower Back Pain

To minimize sunrise soreness, you may need to refresh your nighttime routine. Adjusting your sleeping position to one that support’s your spine’s natural curvature can help you maximize your comfort throughout the night.

Side Sleeping

In the world of slumber, side sleeping may reign supreme. Laying on your side, with a pillow between your legs, can keep your pelvis, hips, and spine aligned through the course of the night to reduce lower back pain.5

That said, side sleeping isn’t the best sleeping position for lower back pain for every sleeper. Depending on your preferences and pains, side sleeping may put unnecessary pressure on your shoulders and hips, putting more pressure on yourself to fall asleep at night.

Back Sleeping

If you find that side sleeping is a side quest into discomfort, back sleeping might be your primary path to relief. To embark down this path, ensure that your spine maintains a neutral position with:

A pillow under the knees

A supportive mattress

A structured pillow

This setup helps distribute your weight evenly between your neck, chest, and back to support your lower back and curate a more restful and pain-free night’s sleep.

Worst Sleeping Positions for Lower Back Pain

Not all sleeping positions are created equal. Actually, some are just plain painful. When seeking a sleep-time solution for lower back pain, most experts recommend avoiding the stomach.

Stomach Sleeping

If you’re a stomach sleeper, you may want to rethink your nightly routine, as it may be the worst sleeping position for lower back pain. Sleeping with your stomach pressed to the mattress can place significant pressure on your spine and force your neck into an awkward angle, which can exacerbate lower back pain and lead to discomfort throughout the night. Consider transitioning to a side or back sleeping position to better support your spine and reduce strain.5

How to Improve If You Must Sleep on Your Stomach

If you’ve tried to change your sleep habits and somehow always wake up lying on your stomach, there are a few strategies you can adopt to improve your position and reduce the strain on your back:

Placing a pillow under your lower stomach and hips

Using a thin pillow for your head

Opting for no pillow at all

Tips for Enhancing Sleep Quality

For a blissful night of sleep that transitions into a pain-free morning, consider these strategies:

Using pillows for support – Whether you place a pillow under your knees, hips, or lower stomach, extra cushioning can offer lower back support and alleviate pressure on the spine in a variety of sleeping positions.

Choosing the right mattress – When it comes to a good night’s sleep, finding the right mattress is key. Opt for one that provides adequate support and conforms to your body’s natural curves. A medium-firm mattress is often recommended for optimal spinal alignment and comfort. Check out our blog to learn more about firm vs medium mattresses.

Split king beds allow two individuals to sleep comfortably and independently. However, they also can cost more than smaller mattresses like a queen bed, and can deter cuddling.

So you’re ready to invest in your dream mattress. If you’re browsing with a partner, you might assume that bigger is better — but design can be just as decisive as size when it comes to you both getting high-quality sleep.

Enter the split king bed.

Split king mattresses are spacious and adaptable, easily tailored to couples’ needs. Most everyone has their sleeping quirks and patterns, and the split king’s construction (a split down the middle) can help both bedmates get their nighttime needs met; however, they can also be costly and deter late-night cuddling.

That said, this mattress style comes with its own potential perks and drawbacks. Let’s take a look at this unique bed style and dive into split king bed pros and cons to help you decide whether it’s a double-winner for you both.

What Is a Split King Bed?

First, exactly what is a split king mattress? A split king bed has the same dimensions as a standard king-sized mattress: 76” (width) by 80” (length).1 The key difference lies in that “split:” Rather than one mattress, split kings have two adjoining twin XL mattresses that together form one larger one.2 Each separate mattress measures around 38” (width) by 80” (length).

Split king mattresses have several traits that set them apart:

They’re customizable – Because split king beds are divided into two segments, sleepers can personalize each side to suit their mattress preferences — particularly if you have an adjustable bed frame.3

They’re ideal for sensitive sleepers – When you and a bedmate share a single sleeping surface, you’re more likely to feel whatever is going on on the other side of the mattress. Split king mattresses create artificial sleep zones to limit this feedback, making them ideal for sleepers who are easily disturbed by others’ rest patterns.

Do Split California King Beds Exist?

Yes, split California king beds do exist. A split Cal king bed consists of two separate mattresses, each measuring approximately 36 inches wide by 84 inches long, which together form a standard California king size of 72 inches by 84 inches.

Split King Bed: The Pros

Most of the advantages of a split king-size bed fall under one umbrella: limitless possibility. So, if you and your partner have been struggling to get into a snooze groove, this mattress style will give you lots of room to find a solution that works for both of you.

Pro #1: Customizable Comfort

Even the happiest of couples can have different preferences when it comes to the ergonomics of sleep. Springs, or memory foam? Mattress topper, or no topper?

Fortunately, split king mattresses give you two twin XL mattresses to outfit instead of one. This means that you and your counterpart can choose their own style according to preferences in firmness, materials, linens, and so on.

Beyond design, greater personalization can help support your well-being. Mattress needs can vary based on:

Preferred position – No matter your preferred sleep posture, most of us need some structural support during rest.4 Your mattress should take some of the pressure off, contouring to your figure and offering enhanced spinal alignment. If you and your partner opt for different sleeping positions, split kings ensure you’ll both get support.

Health concerns – Some doctors recommend specific sleeping positions for people living with certain health conditions. If you or your bedmate struggle with musculoskeletal pain, sleep apnea, heartburn, or other ailments, your mattress style could help relieve symptoms.4

Pro #2: Excellent Motion Isolation

Many people struggle to get high-quality sleep when snuggling up to their partner every night. Split king mattresses are masters of what’s known as motion isolation: They reduce surface-wide feedback from stirrings made on the other side of the bed.

Getting a motion-isolation mattress may be a wise idea if:

You or your partner is a light or sensitive sleeper

You or your partner struggles with insomnia

You and your partner have different sleep schedules (e.g. you’re up early, they sleep in)

Motion isolation properties aren’t limited to split king mattresses. The Casper Dream hybrid memory foam mattress — available from twin-sized to king and split king — has a hybrid construction that limits motion sensitivity between each side of the bed.

All told, the split king can be a life-saver for couples who struggle with sleep interruptions. In other words, what happens on one side of the bed stays on that side of the bed.

Pro #3: May Improve Mattress Lifespan

If you and your partner have different body weights, you may notice:

The lighter partner tends to roll towards the heavier side

One side of the mattress becomes more distressed over time

Your mattress gets lumpy or misshapen more easily

Because of their motion-isolating properties, split king mattresses may be more resilient than their cousins. This mattress style does an excellent job of distributing weight more evenly.

Pro #4: Ease of Installation

Ever lived in a cramped apartment? Then you probably know firsthand that moving wide-load furniture isn’t for the faint of heart (or most walk-up stairwells).

When it comes to how to move a mattress, split king beds are a breeze to transport because of how modular they are. If security deposits, mover costs, or other stressors are a concern for you, a split king mattress could be an ideal bedding solution.

Split King Bed: The Cons

While there are many benefits to a split king-size bed, it’s also important to weigh the potential downsides.

Con #1: Cuddling Could Be a Challenge

For some, sleeping is a high-contact sport. Many people find they sleep better when spooned or snuggled up close to their beloved.5

If you and your partner enjoy winding down in each other’s arms before sleeping, the quirks of a split king bed might take some negotiating. Some couples are annoyed by the split between mattresses, which can make it slightly more challenging to stay physically close.

That said, split king adjustable bed frames can promote your comfort by giving you maximum control. The Casper Adjustable Base Max lets you and your bedmate choose the position ideal for you: sleeping, reading, or checking your inbox while your partner sleeps in.

Con #2: They Could Be Higher Maintenance

Two mattresses necessarily require more bedding:

Two fitted sheets

Two twin XL-sized flat sheets

Several changes of bed sheets

Laundry loads may be double the size, and depending on your routine, it may require some planning to know who’s washed what, when. That said, with a little communication, plenty of couples find this isn’t a deal-breaker — it just requires staying flexible and getting into the groove of a new routine.

Con #3: They Can Cost More

Because of their specialized, hybrid nature, split king beds can be costlier than two discrete twin XL beds. You may need to invest in two bed bases in addition to the mattress, which can drive up costs if you’re looking for a quality model.

Con #4: They Can’t Control Noise

While split king beds give the gift of motion isolation, they’re not built to manage noise. If your sleep sensitivity stems from your partner’s snores, sleep talk, or other sounds, there’s not much a split king bed can do to fix it.

Fortunately, there are many other creative ways to help manage the acoustics of your bedroom to help you both achieve high-quality sleep. You might try6:

Using earplugs while you rest

Getting a white noise machine

Wearing noise-canceling headphones

Trying out soundproof curtains

Should I Get a Split King Bed?

If a split king bed sounds appealing but not quite right, don’t forget that they aren’t the only adaptable options. Hybrid mattresses from Casper offer a perfect marriage of comfort and support, with properties like motion isolation and customizable firmness.

Getting an adjustable bed base to complement your split mattress can also introduce more customizability. The Casper Adjustable Base Max lets you personalize your position so one of you can catnap while the other scrolls the latest headlines.

Tips for Buying the Best Split King Bed

If you’re sold on the split king model, keep these recommendations in mind before you buy:

Know your materials – Generally speaking, hybrid or foam-made mattresses are considered more comfortable than innerspring mattresses for the split king style. Foam construction does a better job with motion transfer, isolation, and responding to sleepers’ movements. Learn more about foam vs spring mattresses in our blog.

Assess your sleeping climate – Sometimes, split king beds can take some extra equipment to keep both mattresses secure. In aggregate, mattress pads, bed bridges, and mattress toppers can make your bed more prone to added heat.

If temperature control is a concern for you, know that Casper split king mattresses are obsessively engineered to keep cool and breathable (an expert-approved factor in getting the best sleep possible).7

Take stock of your sleep habits – Before investing in a new mattress, it may be worth paying extra close attention to your sleep patterns. You and your bedmate might even keep a sleep journal for a month or so, detailing where your bedtime routines match up and where they diverge. Having an accurate log of your habits can ensure you’re aware of all the factors when deciding which split king bed to buy.

Casper: Meet True Sleep Royalty

Split king beds can be divisive, but their potential to personalize make them well worth considering. If you’re searching for a sleep solution that’ll bring you and your bedmate together, you’ll never have to compromise when you choose Casper.

Whether you opt for the One affordable memory mattress (our best seller), the Hybrids, or the Maxes, each Casper mattress style comes in a split king option for couples claiming this style for their bedroom.
Adjustable beds can be a great option for side sleepers as they allow you to elevate your head, reduce pressure on your hips and spine, and have a customizable sleeping experience.

Side sleeping might just be the ultimate sleep position: it supports spinal alignment, curbs snoring, and can even help stop acid reflux at night.1 This versatility extends to the mattress, too: This position opens the door to a variety of mattress options, allowing side sleepers to tailor their sleep environment for a perfect blend of rest and relaxation.

All said, are adjustable beds good for side sleepers, too?

In this guide, we’ll outline the benefits of adjustable beds for side sleepers, review the optimal positions for maximum comfort, and discuss factors to keep in mind when shopping for your next best mattress.

Wondering, “What is an adjustable bed?” Check out our blog and then come back to this one.

Benefits of Adjustable Beds for Side Sleepers

Side sleeping superiority isn’t something that’s so easily laid to bed, and it’s perfectly fitted for a night of quality rest. Fortunately, adjustable beds — the mattress type that incorporates a customizable bed base and sleeping structure for maximum comfort — fall into line just as seamlessly as the sheep you’re counting.

For those sleeping on their sides, adjustable beds offer several unique benefits.

Enhanced Comfort

One major upside to an adjustable bed is the option to customize and vary your sleep environment based on your body’s unique needs.

As a side sleeper, an adjustable bed can provide optimal spinal support and pressure relief for your shoulders and hips, allowing you to kiss lower back pain good night. If you’re prone to back sleeping, the Casper Zero Gravity bed position elevates both your head and feet above your stomach to support:

Rest and recovery

Pain relief

Breathing

Circulation

Improved Breathing

As with every night of rest, there can be the occasional nightmare. For some side sleepers, breathing difficulties can interrupt a restful sleep — particularly for those who regularly battle sleep apnea.2 Check out our blog to learn more about the best and worst sleeping position for sleep apnea.

The advantage of adjustable beds lies in their ability to elevate the head and upper body, which can assist in opening the airways, improving the flow of breath and supporting quality, undisturbed sleep.2

Reduced Pressure Points

When sleeping on your side, your body can develop pressure points — sensitive areas where we tend to put more weight. For side sleepers, it’s typically the shoulders and hips.

Over time, your dedicated eight hours of sleep can burden the muscles in these areas, causing pain and stiffness. Further, your dalliance into dreamland can prevent your brain from receiving and reacting to pain feedback if your shoulder or hips find themselves in an uncomfortable position.2

If you wake up sore after a night of sleeping on your side, adjustable beds can help alleviate this issue by making it easy to modify the bed’s position to reduce pressure on these sensitive areas.

Optimal Positions for Side Sleepers

Even with the support of an adjustable mattress, side sleepers can further optimize their posture to align their bodies with a restful night of sleep.

Head Elevation

If you regularly inundate your partner with a ballad of snores and sniffles, an adjustable bed may be the perfect foundation for a quieter, more restful night.

Adjustable mattresses allow you to elevate your head, opening your airways to alienate snoring.2 Plus, this sleeping position helps maintain the natural alignment of the spine, reducing strain on the neck and back.

Avoiding the Zero Gravity Position

The Casper Zero Gravity position elevates both your feet and your head. While back sleepers can relax into this position, side sleepers may find it to be disorientating.

This sleeping position can lead to awkward spinal alignment and increase pressure on your shoulders and hips. Instead, aim to find a position that offers gentle, full-body support and relief from head to toe, promoting a more comfortable and restful sleep.

Factors to Consider

Finding the perfect bed isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario; it’s all about personal preferences and individual needs.

Here’s a guide to help you navigate the world of adjustable bed frames so you can discover the bed that’s tailor-made just for you.

Mattress Compatibility

When choosing an adjustable bed, it’s essential to ensure that the mattress is compatible with the bed frame. Some mattresses, like memory foam, are designed to work seamlessly with adjustable beds, while others may not be a perfect match.

At Casper, we’re experts on all-things-sleep, including helping you find a compatible mattress for your adjustable frame so you can hit your pillow and drift off to sleep seamlessly.

Personal Preferences

The customization of an adjustable bed can be a game-changer when it comes to your sleep, but finding the right mattress and bed frame combination typically depends on your personal preference. You’ll want to keep in mind:

The size of your bedroom and whether the bed frame will comfortably fit in your space.

Your spouse or partner’s health needs and preferences.

Whether you’re looking for a mattress that’s firm, soft, or something in between. Check out our blog to help you decide between a plush vs firm mattress.

When in doubt, you can always count on mattress experts (like our team at Casper) for insight and guidance when looking for your next adjustable bed.

Health Conditions

If you have any underlying health conditions that may affect your sleep, you may want to consult with a healthcare professional before opting for an adjustable bed.

Certain conditions, including circulatory issues or respiratory problems, may require specific adjustments or positioning to ensure your comfort and safety. Learn more about the best sleeping positions for breathing problems. On the other hand, if you experience pain from a broken hip or paraplegia, an adjustable bed may be just what the doctor orders.3

There are plenty of ways to keep sheets on an adjustable bed, such as using deep-pocketed fitted sheets, sheet fasteners, sheet suspenders, elastic corner bands, and adjustable top sheets.

As rewarding as having an adjustable bed (or adjustable base) can be, the bunching, lumping, or slipping of your bed sheets can disrupt a good night’s sleep.

Adjustable beds offer unmatched comfort — particularly for people who deal with nighttime pain — but their range can make it a challenge to keep sheets in place. From specially designed fitted sheets to sheet suspenders that would make your grandpa jealous, the good news is there are plenty of strategies to help you get the fit you’re dreaming of.

Making the bed doesn’t have to be complicated, but it may take a few extra supplies and some trial and error. Below, we take a look at 5 tricks for how to keep sheets on an adjustable bed to help you and your linens stay snug as a bug.

Tip #1 Use Deep-Pocketed Fitted Sheets

One easy way to make sure your sheets stick is to use a fitted sheet with deep pockets, typically between 8 and 18 inches.1

Deep pocket sheets have slightly more fabric than your usual ones, which means they’ll give you plenty of coverage for the unique mobility of an adjustable bed. They’re also great if you have a thicker mattress or lots of bedding accessories to keep you cozy as can be.

Before you buy, you’ll want to consider:

Elasticity – More elasticity in your fitted sheets will be more forgiving for your adjustable bed’s movements. They’ll also ensure your sheets stay taut.

Fabric – In addition to elastic, it can help to pick out a deep-pocketed fitted sheet made of a forgiving material. Cotton blends or jersey sheets can offer some extra stretch potential, which will flex and flow with your adjustable bed’s movements.

Your mattress accessories – If you use types of mattress toppers that reduce friction or other accessories that add bulk, keep this in mind when searching for the proper size.

Tip #2 Use Sheet Fasteners

Sheet fasteners, sheet straps, sheet grippers…whatever you call them, they’re a worthy investment if you have an adjustable bed (or if you move a lot when you sleep).2 These grip the corners of your fitted sheets to keep them secure. To use them, you’ll want to:

Attach a fastener to each corner of your fitted sheet.

Adjust the tension until your sheet is secure and taut on all corners.

While you likely won’t need to adjust your sheets as often, you may need to check your fasteners regularly to minimize slippage. Be sure to check the tension periodically, and tighten where necessary.

(P.S. Sheet fasteners are also a solid solution if you have extra accessories (e.g. mattress toppers and mattress pads) to your bed.)

Tip #3 Try Sheet Suspenders

Sheet suspenders are like sheet fasteners, but they’re a little more secure (and a bit more traditional). These criss-cross beneath your mattress, which means they’ll cover a wider surface area to yield an even more stable hold.

To use them, you’ll want to:

Lift up your mattress (you may need to recruit an extra pair of hands).

Put the suspenders below the mattress, attaching them at the corners of your fitted sheet.

Adjust the suspenders so that they cross evenly beneath your mattress.

Adjust the tension at the corners until the suspenders are secure.

Like sheet fasteners, you’ll get minimal slippage if you check, adjust, and tighten them regularly. Laundry day is a great opportunity to help them and your fitted sheets stay put.

Tip #4 Use Elastic Corner Bands

A simple, adaptable solution, elastic corner bands are a slightly less aggressive fix that can add some extra security to your bedding. These are slipped on the corners of your bed; you won’t need to lift your mattress to use them.

When looking for corner bands, keep an eye out for high-quality options that offer both durability and elasticity. Higher quality elastic bands are less likely to lose their stretch over time, which means you’ll minimize costs and effort without compromising on sheet security.

Tip #5 Invest In Adjustable Bed Sheets

Keeping your fitted sheet in place is one thing. Throw in an adjustable bed sheet, and you’ll really be in business.

Adjustable top sheets are designed to flex with your customizable bed, and they’ll stay put even if you switch your bed frame position often.

Top Benefits of an Adjustable Bed

Are adjustable bed frames worth it? Setting up an adjustable bed for maximum comfort can take a little elbow grease, but the extra care you put into it is worth it.

Adjustable beds offer myriad benefits, including (though not limited to)3:

Enhanced comfort – The main reason why people invest in an adjustable bed? They’re incredibly comfortable. The customizability of adjustable bases means that every person using one can create their own comfort — whether that means propping up your head, elevating your legs, or adjusting your position depending on how you’re lounging.3

Protection from pain – Many people opt for adjustable beds to find relief from pain while sleeping. Sufferers of joint pain can adjust their legs or head to scale back pressure on their lower back, neck, or other body parts.3 Check out our blog to learn more about the best and worst sleeping positions for lower back pain.

Improved sleep quality – Because adjustable beds can be modified to your body’s needs, you may notice fewer sleep interruptions from tossing and turning to get cozy. Translation? Better quality — and potentially more — sleep.3

Reduced snoring (potentially) – Sleep apnea, and the snoring that can accompany it, affects nearly 40 million adult Americans.4 For mild sleep apnea, adjusting your sleep position is widely considered to be a helpful antidote.5 Adjustable beds let you change your sleep position mechanically, usually by propping up your head. As a result, you may notice fewer breathing issues, sleep interruptions, and potentially less snoring.3 Read more about the worst and best sleeping position for sleep apnea.

Sore muscle relief – Adjustable beds help relieve pressure in the joints and muscles.3 Many also come with massage features, which may help improve overall comfort and reduce stress on the body.

Better circulation – Blood flow tends to stagnate in supine positions, which can even lead to swelling and fluid retention in the lower half of your body. Adjustable beds can help give circulation a boost, which may help those with circulation problems or edema find relief.3

Digestive relief – It’s common to deal with heartburn before and during resting hours, especially if you’ve had a big meal before bedtime. By elevating your head, adjustable beds may help improve upper digestive discomfort (which can result in better digestion overall).3 Learn more about how to stop acid reflux at night.

Easy in, easy out – If you’re an older adult or struggle with mobility, adjustable beds can help give you a degree more independence.1 Many people find it easier to mount and dismount the bed by adjusting the position to be upright, which can add even more safety for those in their golden years.

Split king mattress adjustable bed frames offer even more options for couples. A split king mattress size is essentially a standard king bed, but split down the middle, creating two separate twin XL mattresses. With a split king adjustable bed frame, each sleeper can choose their own position, without being limited by what their partner needs to stay comfortable.

Getting the Most Out of Your Adjustable Bed

You can reap maximum benefits from your adjustable bed when you complement customizability with healthy sleep habits. The following suggestions are backed by science to help you get the highest quality sleep possible.

Set Up a Sleep Routine

Building a consistent, sustainable sleep routine does wonders for getting your best rest each night.6

Ideally, you’ll wake up and wind down at the same time each day.6 This can help stabilize your body’s internal clock, and it may make it easier to fall asleep and wake up naturally.6 If you nap, it’s best to limit your time to an hour or 45 minutes, as sleeping longer can interfere with your nightly rest.6 Discover how to fix your circadian rhythm in our blog.

Create a Cozy Sleep Environment

In addition to routine, your environment cues your body to wake up and wind down. It may help to reserve your bedroom for only those activities associated with rest — i.e., avoid working from bed, for instance, or taking calls from your bedroom.

You can make your bedroom feel like a sleep-ready cocoon by:

Choosing comfortable bedding – From the pillows you choose to the sheets you use, it’s worth the investment to select bedding that’s breathable, soothing, and conducive to sleep.

Controlling the climate – Sleep experts say that 65 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature when it comes to getting high-quality sleep.7 Using air conditioners, fans, and breathable, cooling bedding can help you maintain this temperature range.

Limiting light – Outside light can mess with circadian rhythms. Depending on the world outside your bedroom, you might consider introducing blackout curtains to your windows. These help block out ambient light to create a sleep-friendly environment. Alternatively, you might use a sleep mask to keep your eyes covered.

Find Your Favorite Ways to Unwind

More and more research suggests that exposure to screens before bedtime can compromise sleep quality. Blue light (the kind emitted by phones, tablets, and the rest) can impair melatonin production — a hormone that helps us get to sleep.8

Instead of scrolling, it’s worthwhile finding analog activities you enjoy that also help you get drowsy. You might try:

Reading a book

Journaling

Stretching or gentle yoga

Listening to a guided meditation
