Happy New Year!!  I’m kicking the year off to a start with my latest pattern, hot off the hook.  My Flower Temperature Blanket crochet pattern is a design for a throw using cute little granny squares with a flower motif. Each flower represents the temperature of the day and we’ll be making them all year!

The Flower Temperature Blanket is designed for intermediate crocheters and is a fun, engaging project that will keep your creativity flowing throughout an entire year. The idea behind a temperature blanket is to create one square each day.  The petals of each square represent that day’s temperature, making it an artistic way to track the seasons and a vibrant crochet record of the year’s weather.

The design is a reboot of an old pattern I designed in 2015 – Mini Flower Block – using DK weight yarn instead of the original worsted.  I’ve also made a few changes to the background round to reduce the amount of yarn needed.

My version of the blanket is based on the UK climate, but you can easily customise the temperature ranges to suit your own local weather conditions. This blanket spans a full year, consisting of 360 squares plus 5 rounds for the edging, perfectly representing all 365 days.

The pattern is in written format in both UK and US crochet terminology and includes a crochet chart. There is also a colouring-in page so you can keep track of the squares throughout the year to make joining easier.

I’ve used Lang Yarns Merino 120 for the blanket.  Its a DK weight (Light Worsted) yarn that offers a stunning array of colour choice and squishy softness. I picked out a rainbow of 8 vibrant colours to reflect the spectrum of temperatures throughout the year. To make these colours truly pop, I paired them with a delicate pale grey background and a dark grey joining colour that elegantly ties everything together.

If you’d like to use a different yarn be sure to pick a DK / Light Worsted weight yarn. Make one square to check you’ve got the gauge/tension before you start!

My latest pattern, hot off the hook, is now out – Primitive Star Pillow crochet pattern is a design for a 12″ cushion/pillow featuring cute little granny squares with a primitive star motif.

The Primitive Star Pillow pattern is an intermediate crochet pattern and the pattern uses basic crochet stitches throughout.  The granny square blocks used are also great for blankets and throws!

Each granny square measures 10cm x 10cm (4 inches by 4 inches) and, when joined, the crochet pillow will measure approximately 30 cm x 30 cm (12 inches by 12 inches).  I recommend you block the square for nice neat lines.  The blocks are joined using the zipper crochet method but you can join the blocks in any other way.  I’ve added little embroidered stars at the corners of the central block for extra cuteness.

The pattern is in written format in both UK and US crochet terms, just choose which file to download after purchasing.

The yarn I’ve used is Cascade 220 which is an all-time favourite of mine.  I really liked this yarn and I think the colour range in this yarn is just heavenly!

My latest pattern is now out – Twinkle Star Block crochet granny square pattern is finally published!  I started this crochet block in January, so its taken a while to finish!

The Twinkle Star Block pattern is an intermediate crochet pattern and the pattern uses basic crochet stitches plus Front Post stitches and Popcorn stitches.  This blocks is great for blankets and throws!

When finished the crochet square will measure approximately 30 cm x 30 cm (12 inches by 12 inches).  I recommend you block the square for nice neat lines.  Also, when working the last few rounds start in a different corner on each row.  This helps stop the block getting out of shape.

The pattern is in written format in both UK and US crochet terms, just choose which file to download after purchasing.

The yarn I’ve used is Woolbox Imagine Lullaby Baby Anti-Pilling DK.  Its a gorgeous yarn that comes in pretty pastel colours.  You can purchase the yarns here in the UK*, or, purchase the yarns here in the USA & CAN*.  I’ve used Buttercup Yellow, Peach, Marshmallow Pink, Lily Lilac, Sky Blue, Mint Green Dream and Fluffy Cloud White.  I really liked this yarn and I think the colour range in this yarn is just perfect for little baby projects.

Happy St Dwynwen’s Day!

Free Crochet Heart Pattern

Happy Dwynwen’s Day!  “What’s that?”, you ask?  Well, St Dwynwen’s Day is celebrated in Wales on 25^th January each year in a similar way to Valentine’s day.  Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers.  Now, you may think that she’s just a Welsh version of St Valentine but, I’ll stop you there to just mention that, she also happens to be the patron saint of sick animals which makes her awesome!

Dwynwen’s Story

As the legend goes, Dwynwen was the most beautiful of King Brychan Brycheiniog’s daughters.  She fell head-over-heels in love with a young prince called Maelon Dafodrill.  However, her father had already promised her in marriage to someone else.  Maelon took this news badly and declared he never wanted to see her again.  Heart-broken she fled to the wilderness and prayed to God to help her forget her love for Maelon.  As she drifted into sleep an angel delivered a potion to her and as soon as she had drank the draft she saw in her dream that Maelon was promptly turned into a block of ice.  The angel then granted her three wishes.  Her first wish was that Maelon be thawed at once.  The second wish was that God help all lovers ensuring their love be fulfilled, or, they be cured of their passion.  Her third wish was that she should never fall in love again and never marry.  All her wishes were granted. 

Dwynwen spent the rest of her days as a nun praying that other people have better luck in love than her.  She founded a convent at an isolated church on Ynys Mon (Anglesey).  You can still see the ruins of her church at Llanddwyn today – a beautiful, windswept tidal island stretching out into the sea with stunning views of Eryri (Snowdonia).

What has this got to do with crochet?

Well, not a huge amount I suppose!  But, to celebrate Dwynwen’s Day, and to spread a little love out into the world, I’m releasing this pattern for free!….

And, I’m using Welsh wool which you can get your hands on here.  This yarn is in my top 3 faves and spun from the fleeces of hardy Welsh sheep.  I’ve used the Double Knitting yarn in shades Welsh Red and Perl for my hearts but you can use any colours you fancy to make your own hearts.  I don’t have any affiliation with Gwlan Cambrian Wool and didn’t get the yarn for free so you can be sure that I’m recommending it because I love it!  (Gwlan Cambrian – feel free to get in touch! )  Please note that if you are outside the UK you need to contact them for postage costs before you go ahead and order.

Of course, you can use any yarn for the crochet hearts.  The yarn I’ve used is a double knit so, if you are in the USA and using worsted, your hearts will turn out a bit bigger. But, bigger is better when it comes to hearts!

Yarn:  Gwlan Cambrian Wool Double Knitting or any DK / Light Worsted weight yarn

Hook:  4mm (G) size hook if using DK / Light Worsted

Colour Used:  Welsh Red and Perl

The pattern uses UK crochet terminology.  Here’s a quick list of abbreviations and their US equivalents…

Ch     =  chain
slst    =  slip stitch
st(s)   =  stitch(es)
dc      =  double crochet ( US single crochet)
htr     =  half treble crochet ( US half double crochet)
tr       =  treble crochet ( US double crochet)

Heart Pattern

Foundation Ring:  With yarn of choice make a Magic Ring (tutorial here).

Round 1:  1 ch (does not count as a st here and throughout), 7 dc into ring, join with slst to first st made, tighten ring. (7 sts)

Round 2:  3 ch (counts as 1 tr), 1 tr in same place, 2 tr in each of next 6 sts, join with slst to 3^rd of beginning 3 ch. (14 sts)

Round 3:  1 ch, (1 dc, 1 htr) in next st, 3 tr in next st, (1 tr, 1 htr) in next st, 2 htr in next st, 1 htr in next st, (1 htr, 1 tr) in next st, 3 tr in next st, (1 tr, 1 htr) in next st, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in next st, (1 htr, 1 tr) in next st, 3 tr in next st, (1 htr, 1 dc) in next st, slst into the first 1 ch made at start of the round. (27 sts)

Round 4:  Do not 1 ch, 1 dc in next st, (1 htr, 1 tr) in next st, 2 tr in next st, 3 tr in next st, 2 tr in next 2 sts, (1 tr, 1 htr) in next st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 1 htr in next 2 sts, 3 tr in next st, 1 htr in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 1 htr in next st, (1 htr, 1 tr) in next st, 2 tr in next 2 sts, 3 tr in next st, 2 tr in next st, (1 tr, 1 htr) in next st, 1 d in next st, slst into next st and end yarn. Finally, my crochet bunting pattern – Easter Bunny Bunting – is available here on my website, Etsy and Ravelry!  It uses DK weight yarn and can be made with whatever you have in your stash.

The Easter Bunny Bunting is easy to make featuring cute little bunnies and sweet little flowers.  I’ve worked all the flowers in yellow and white, but you could use different colours as the flowers are great for using up little scraps of yarn.

The pattern uses only basic crochet stitches throughout so it’s perfect for beginner crocheters!  You can use a little bit of yarn and a tapestry needle to sew on some cute little features.  Also, you could add little white pompoms for tails.

The finished bunting will measure approximately 19 cm x 248 cm, but, you can make the bunting as long or as short as you like.

Check out my latest crochet shawl pattern – Brighter Later!  It uses one yarn cake of gorgeously coloured Hobbii Cotton Kings Sultan/Twirl.

Brighter Later is a triangular shaped shawl worked from the top down.  There are pineapple stitches every few rows which are similar to puff stitches but a bit easier to work.

The finished shawl will measure approximately 65cm x 162cm / 25.5″ x 64″.

You can use any 4ply / Sport weight cotton yarn for this crochet pattern.  I’ve used Hobbii Cotton Kings Twirl (also known as Sultan) which is a 4ply cotton yarn that comes in cakes of oh-so-many gorgeous colours!  Any of the 4ply cotton yarn cakes on the Hobbii website will suit this pattern, or, any 4ply cotton yarn cake (like Scheepjes Whirl) will work too.  You’ll need approximately 800 metres / 874 yds of yarn to make the shawl.

I’m really excited to announce my latest pattern – Portuguese Tiles Crochet Along for Deramores.  The CAL starts this coming Friday and you can grab your yarn packs now!  Here it is in the Azulejos colour pack…

The pattern will be released each week for six weeks.  Weeks One to Five will be a different square design each week and Week Six will be joining and edging.  Please note, the pattern is only available if you purchase one of the yarn packs!

There are five different square designs that make up the the blanket, some are worked all in the same colour combination and some a mix.  Each square has a floral motif in the corners which look fab once all the squares a joined!  The finished blanket is edged with a simple border to finish off.

The finished blanket size is 115cm x 153cm and the pattern is in UK crochet terminology. The skill level is Intermediate but would suit Adventurous Beginners too. There are popcorn stitches, Front Post and Back Post stitches and some working in the front and back loops. All the unusual stitches are fully explained as always.

Check out my latest crochet mandala pattern!  Its called Birch Leaves Mandala and I’m a little obsessed with it

I published this pattern back in December 2020 but didn’t get around to blogging about it because, well, 2020! 

Birch Leaves Mandala is an Intermediate skill level pattern but the pattern file contains photos of each step of the pattern so, if you are an adventurous beginner, it should be very doable!

All the stitches are explained in the pattern and the helpful photos will guide you through any trickier bits.  This mandala would look great in other colours too.  You could try working the leaves in different colours!  

The finished crochet mandala will measure approximately 22 cm / 8.5″ and can be hung on the wall as it is, or, if you have a suitable tapestry hoop you could sew it to that.

You can use any DK / Light Worsted weight cotton yarn for this crochet pattern.  I’ve used Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 which comes in so many gorgeous colours!
