Mexican breakfasts are something we love to treat ourselves to on occasion and we always consider it such a treat. The flavor, textures and exciting spices of a plate of chilaquiles or breakfast tacos is a champion breakfast that fuels us for the long days. And when we have the opportunity to feast on such breakfasts in Mexico, we feel double lucky.

This year we had the opportunity to experience not only Mexican breakfasts, but authentic local food at  Food & Wine Magazines annual festival again in Ixapa/Zihuatanejo.

It’s funny how this recipe came to mind. We were in teaching our food photography/food styling workshop this weekend and the students were tackling the subject of photographing drinks. Drinks can often be challenging, especially when it comes to reflections, styling drinks and how to add interest to simple liquids.

Diane was quickly setting up to style a drink scene for the students to practice photographing and someone yelled out “Sangria”. Yes! the thought of having a sangria sounded so perfect at the time too. But the visual thoughts of styling chunks of fresh fruit in a fizzy drink was the perfect subject for the scene.

In about 4 minutes, a sangria set was made and propped ready for the waiting cameras and photographers.

Magic happens in different ways. Often times it happens in special life moments that are un-expected, yet full of meaning. Or magic can be a random act of kindness, like a hug or a kiss. Last week magic happened for us at Food Blog Forum in the form of friendship and community at the most likely place on Earth— at Disney World!

Seriously, the hugest thank you goes out to all the wonderful folks at Disney World in Orlando for their un-surpassed generosity and support in sponsoring our Food Blog Forum event. Words can’t describe the care, attention and detail they put forth in organizing and helping us make this event beyond amazing. From the venue, to the park hopper passes, accommodations at the Polynesian resort, and fantastic food from all the Disney resort chefs, Disney World truly made happy magic for us all.

Hello Friends, thank you so much for the amazing response to our workshops. Our first release date sold out quickly and we’re thrilled to be hosting small groups of students at our studio. The experience of sharing and learning as a group will be phenomenal & we’re so excited to meet and be creative with you!

Since we have a long wait list, we’ve announced two more dates for our food styling and photography workshops. 

Our first food photography workshop was such a blast and it was such a treat to be able to meet students from New York City, Boston, Washington State and Arizona! Both days were spent studying lighting, composition, editing and how to manage the files. The second day was especially fun studying food styling and having plenty of hands on practice with beautiful food and props from our prop room.

For the last 16 years that we’ve been together, there are a few items that still have made it through the entire decade and half relationship. Our photo albums documenting our mischievous younger days still exist in the back corner of our bookshelf. Two fruit trees in pots that started off on our apartment patio balcony have survived 2 major moves are and are currently flourishing in their final garden spot. And then of course, our KitchenAid stand mixer has stood the test of time over all these years through a bazillion dozen batches of cookies, cupcakes, bread and other culinary concoctions.

Our KitchenAid stand mixer is like a part of the family. It’s one of the few kitchen tools that have and will always be, a permanent part of our life. When we were able to save our pennies together, the first thing we did was to outfit our kitchen with the fundamental tools. Yes, we did this before even ever buying a bed. We slept on the floor for the first 3 years together. But that’s another post.

Anyways, back to the kitchen talk…

We finally did it! We’re happy to be announcing new photography workshops at our studio.  Thank you to all our readers and supporters who encouraged us over the last few years to have photography workshops in our home town in Orange County, CA.

For the last few years, we’ve traveled across the country and around the world teaching workshops and speaking at industry conferences on photography. But we’ve never really formally organized local photography workshops in our town. We knew eventually we’d be announcing workshops, but it did take a few years to finally organize this. So many of you were patient to wait and keep emailing us  reminding us about organizing these. Your push made this happen!

Happy Sunday everyone! Now that were home for 10 days straight (yes!), we’re finally able to finish off some details of our upcoming photography workshop announcements. We have much to share with you today, but let’s start with the cookbook promo video we produced for Bi-Rite Creamery’s new cookbook!

 In our previous post, we mentioned that we produced the cookbook trailer video for Bi-Rite creamery. It was such an honor to be able to work with the amazing Bi-Rite Creamery team and Ten Speed Press folks.

Chef’s Anne and Kris produce some of the best ice cream in the country. Now they’re sharing many of their terrific and special recipes in their latest book , Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones. We’ve had the book in our possession for the last few weeks and it’s hard to not put it down.

The recipes are made with love, great ingredients and local pride. You can now make their ice creams right in your own home.

Michael Rulhman “Had Something to Say” – Stupid Kitchen Tools

We’re back with new episodes of the Had Something To Say video series! Michael Ruhlman visited us at our studio and we spent a few hours together stirring up some heated conversations about everything from kitchen tools to Ruth Bourdain. Amy Scattergood, editor of Los Angeles Weekly Squid Ink and food writer for Los Angeles Times Food, makes special appearances as the “voice of reason” to keep Michael in-check and accountable for his opinions.

Stupid kitchen tools is the topic at large and round wooden spoons are on Michael’s hit list. Watch the video to understand how he makes his case against round wooden spoons.

I, Todd, do have a disclaimer for the opinions expressed in the video. Diane and I both love Michael. He’s a great writer, lover of food, challenger of ideas, and a man/father/husband who we respect to no end. He listens and thinks heavily with his heart and mind together.

I remember a tweet from Olga of @Sassyradish about a year ago sharing the news that she had left her career on Wall Street. Olga was a risk taker, a determined dreamer and I very impressed. I love people who take chances.

She plunged head first into what she really loved to do, and that was food and writing. I knew from that moment on that her blog would be breathing a new energy from a woman living a life with intention. I love people who know what they want.

Exactly one year later she writes to share where she’s at and how she’s grown as a person and in her new career. Her journey has been remarkable in just 365 days. Please read her words about this experience. I loved reading her post. I read it 3 times.
