Hi Everyone

Really pleased to see there is again a LUG in Worcester - thanks for organising it!

I'm keen to get involved and learn some more about Linux. I've used it for a couple of years - mainly Linux Mint (is that cheating?!). I've also recently begun the Open University Linux course which you've probably heard of, and I'm intending to get my L+ certification in due course.

I've popped into the IRC a few times to say hi, but so far haven't found anyone in there.

Looking forward to meeting you all and would like to be an active part of the group, so if there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Regards, James (Worcester City)

The Redditch and Bromsgrove lug, is re-branding itself.

Hi guys (and gals), Just a note from the Redditch and Bromsgrove Linux User Group. The active members of the group have had some problems with the founders of the group and finally decided to re-name the group. David Goodwin (the founder member) has publicly stated that he no longer wanted any thing to do with the RnBLug and although he was prepared to allow us to continue with the use of the RnBlug title, it became apparent that his wife was not prepared to relinquish the links to the LUG. Org. RnBLug domain name. As we felt that this would cause problems in the future, we decided to re name the group.

We are now known as the North East Worcestershire Linux User Group. Our E-Mail address is newlug2012@gmail.com

The changes have been accepted by the Lug.Org.UK organisation and we are in the process of setting up a website with them.

We are meeting at the Washford Mill, Redditch, Worc's. on the first Tuesday of the month from about 7.30 pm. Whilst we were originally committed to alternating the venues between Redditch and Bromsrove (and still are to some extent) It was felt that a) we could not find a suitable Pub in Bromsgrove, offering good beer, free parking, good beer, WiFi Oh! and did I mention, good beer. b) we want to start an advertising campaign with the local papers, it was felt that it would be better to hold our meetings at a regular venue, so that persons reading any advertisements, would be able to relate to one venue. Rather than a scattered mix of venues. c) The Washford Mill is on the Warwickshire borders of Redditch, Worcestershire and Studley, Warwickshire. So it is hoped that we can promote the group into Warwickshire as well as continuing to serve Redditch and Bromsgrove.

One final point relating to the name. I had a discussion with Frank Langford some time ago about his aims with respect to creating a Worcestershire LUG. Likewise, one of our members Paul Walsh has similar interests. When renaming the group, those interests were taken into account. i.e. By Calling the group North East Worcestershire, we hope to be setting out our region for an amalgamation in the future.

Perhaps you could amend your website details, with respect to our LUG name and contact details.

Look forward to meeting you all at some time in the future.

Roger Frisby.

thanks for the support, please add yourselves into the team list on
pirate pad -
if you send any PR out to the media etc add that in too in the mailout
section so we don't double up efforts - the text we used for PR and
emails is all at the bottom of PP.

If any of you can make it to our hlug feb meeting at the Point4 on wed
feb 23 that would be good as there will be quite a bit to talk about
concerning the event
> We have had a brief discussion on our own list and are very excited about
> your open source event on March 26th. Some of us are planning to attend the
> event and offer help with whatever you need. We are still quite small as we
> only really formed late last year so what we can do may be limited, we would
> certainly currently be unable to organise such an event ourselves. I've had
> a look at you're piratepad around the event and plan to get some publicity
> into Worc's local papers and spread the word here. We'll also send invites
> and try and to get some of our councillors along to the event.
Hi all,

Hope you are all well. Just saw this on the Ubuntu UK mailing list about
our neighbours Hereford LUG - perhaps people around that end of the
county might fancy wandering along?

I will personally be back from Oxford by then, so if we are trooping
down en masse, I would certainly be interested in going down.
Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Open Source Day - March 26

Hi everyone
Herefordshire LUG is organising an Open Source Day on Sat March 26 as a
follow on from the very successful Software Freedom day event we ran in
Sept.
It's a free drop-in event open to everyone - we demonstrate Linux
operating systems, OS cross platform software and promote and inform
people about FOSS.
Many of our LUG members are Ubuntu users and Ubuntu tends to be the
Linux system we recommend to first time users - we gave away over 60
Ubuntu discs at our last event (thanks to canonical) to users who ranged
from business people and students to not-for-profit organisations and
home users - it was quite a mix as well as nearly 100 of our own cross
platform Open disc (kindly copied and printed for us gratis by The Linux
Emporium).

For our Open Source Day in March we have created our own HOSS Awards -
Herefordshire Open Source Star Awards - and are looking for nominations
from businesses, organisations and individuals who have done the most to
promote and develop the use of FOSS in the county.

At this event we are also focusing on Open Document Standards and the
need for compatibility and will be looking at Open/Libre Office in
particular.
Dr Mark Wright a Bristol City Council's cabinet member and an Open
Source advocate will be speaking in the afternoon about his experience
of Open Source in Local Government.

So if any of you can come to the event we would love to see you there.
There is more info up on our website about the event and the HOSS Awards

Wow, that took me some time. With Christmas mayhem finally over and things starting to get back to something like normal, I've finally found some time to sit and let you all know the goings on in the Cardinals hat on the 7th December.

The venue chosen by dutchie was as described small and welcoming serving a variety of unusual and tasty beer. Great to see some of the new faces attending so welcome to Simon (sponex), Francis, Seb, and Rich who has won himself the title of (startx). Dutchie apologised for missing the gathering due to illness, so too did Dean who was studying for A-levels and narrf who add more important things to do (something to do with a bunch of overpaid fools kicking a bag of wind about up North somewhere)

The discussion was mostly about the newer members use and experiences with Linux. A relatively quiet evening in terms of 'geekness' but I think enjoyable by most. A short discussion about the offer from Excalibur, although without dates for the fairs it's extremely difficult for anyone to commit to attend. I'm expecting the first to be either Easter BH or May BH. I agreed to approach two grey box/used hardware vendors in Evesham for the loan of some demo hardware for an event, and there was some agreement to be able to get something running on a stand if this proves unsuccessful, sponex and myself both have older hardware available for use, it appears though that both are running headless and displays are a bit of problem.

I think we should arrange the next meeting in good time to prepare properly for the first Excalibur event this year unless anyone wants to meet sooner. We'll need to probably do an all out geek thing and decide on how to present the LUG, what to have running / available etc. Even if you won't be able to attend you thoughts are welcome. Thanks to Dave for his previous comments re infopoints from which I have already got some great information and put together some draft materials which I'll post soon.

Another chat on IRC and we've sort of settled on the evening of Tuesday 7th Dec. Put it in your calendar, write it inside your eyelids, or whatever you need to do to remember the date. Exact purveyor of the city's finest ales is to be confirmed closer to the time. Recommendations anyone?

[Worcs] Pub Evening?

I was chatting with Stuart on IRC a few days ago and we decided that we're long overdue meeting up again. So thought we should try and do something in November before everyone gets too busy before Christmas. We'll probably do a pub evening / early Christmas party type affair somewhere. Suggestions for somewhere in Worcester city centre are welcomed from everyone. Also days of the week we're all available / dates we really can't do would be appreciated so we can try to organise a meeting when most of us can make it. Between the mailing list, website and various social sites, there's now a good number of us, so It would be cool if we could meet up with some of the newest LUG members.

Josh / Matt let us know if your planning to be in the area during November and we'll try our best to fix something around then.

For me Tuesdays, Fridays & weekends are best though I could probably manage any day except Mondays, and there are no specific dates I can't make, at least I don't think so, though I expect the wife will tell me different.

Cheers All

Will

Hi all,

I just thought I'd introduce myself as I'm new to the list.

I work in Worcester but live in Monmouth, so I'm a member of a few
LUGS in the local area.

I've been using Linux for about 10 years, starting with SuSE 6.0
(which I _paid for_ from Borders!) and then using Gentoo, Ubuntu,
Debian and CentOS depending on what I'm doing!

Hopefully I'll make a meet soon,

Cheers,

Matt

[Worcs] September meeting

With software freedom day fast approaching (Fri 17), and our last get
together being a few weeks ago, I'm suggesting we arrange another
meeting. As we are currently without a venue, recommendations for
somewhere in Worcester City centre are welcome. If someone can suggest
somewhere that has the following, It's not a long list, and absolutely
not a requirement (except the beer thing) yet, it would be ideal.

1. Wireless access they'll allow us to use
2. Beer
3. Ideally a quiet room / area we can set ourselves.

I can approach the venue and speak to them about regular meetings if
you can send some contact details. We decided at the last meeting that
we would aim for midweek, when most potential venues are normally
welcome of extra trade.

Exact date for the meeting is open to discussion, we'll confirm on a
day when most can attend. As we aren't really established enough yet
to organise something for SFD we should probably just get together
somewhere the week after (w/c 20th). Would be nice to see some of the
new user signups there as well.

Agenda for the next meeting will be:

1. Regular venue progress.
2. Have a drink.
2. Add anything you would like to discuss when you reply.

Hi there,
We would be glad to support you on your promotion and we are happy to
give you a complementary table inside the fair for the next three
shows. We are just confirming dates at the moment and will advise
accordingly.
In return we would ask that you recommend our fairs to all your members.
Best regards,
> Message The newly re-formed Worcestershire Linux Users Group is looking for new members and to do some unobtrusive local promotion we agreed at our last meeting that good places to do this would be local computer fairs.
>
> As we are a very new and small group we are looking to attend some of your upcoming fairs within the county and with your permission hand out or leave at the entrance some small flyers promoting the group.
>
> Of course, as we will be attending the fair we would pay the necessary entrance fee.
>
> We will in future as the group grows in membership and resource hope to have a stand at each of your fairs within the county.
>
> Do you have any objections to what we are proposing. We are conscious that we do not want to be forcing ourselves onto people by disrupting or interfering with the activities of the trades, attendees or organisers in any way, and would therefore just prefer to leave the flyers somewhere for those that are interested to take.
>
> A sample of our flyer can be seen at http://lug.worcester-county.org/news/47-promotional-poster
>

[Worcs] Windows applications making GRUB 2 unbootable.

Just got this from the guys at lug.org.uk. If anyone with a dual boot
setup is experiencing this, maybe they could help Colin work around
the issue.

> Hi,
>
> Stalwart Colin Watson has a brief article explaining the problem with
> Grub 2 on a dual-boot Windows/Linux system. It seems some Windows'
> applications assume they can use the first bit of the disk for their
> protection schemes, trampling Grub 2 in the process. (Grub 1 was
> smaller.) He's looking for samples where it happens to try and work
> around the issue. I thought it may be of interest to LUGs, and would
> widen his search.
>
> http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/ucgi/~cjwatson/blosxom/2010/08/28
>
> Cheers,
>
> Ralph.

First Meeting

We had our first LUG meeting last night (Friday 20/08) at Worcester Old Rec. Lots of tweets and looking at linkedin photos going on so we knew who we were looking for, we eventually all managed to stumble into each other and have a good night, Frank's band provided excellent entertainment and Ale was consumed.

The lug discussed a number of items, Stuart had the forethought to take some notes, so we can flesh out this article when we he mails them out.

From memory the bullet points from the evening were:

Venue and future meetings

Venue / regular meeting days. We agreed that the venue should be in Worcester City somewhere within walking distance of public transport links to make it as accessible to as many people as possible.

Upcoming events

We want to do something for both Software Freedom Day and Ubuntu 10.10 Launch. It may just be a social but we'll definately get something planned

Lug promotion and awareness

We should try and get flyers and posters out and about locally. The best places probably being in local Libraries, Colleges, Universities, hardware vendors, and anywhere computer fairs are held. We also discussed getting something into local papers etc.

It would be great if we could get a presence at local computer fairs, maybe a small stand, or even just walk around handing stuff out.

Feedback for the poster was positive with couple of minor changes agreed on which are now complete, the A3, A4, and A4(2xA5) versions are now all available
