Currently the server version will only run on windows servers, but we are experimenting with getting it to work on Linux and mac servers.

What’s new?

New conversion engine

The main change in this release is we have a new conversion engine. There are now three conversion engines to choose from. Now I know many users might be thinking to themselves, gee that sounds complex, why not just have one super-duper engine that does everything? Well that would be a good idea but unfortunately like a lot of things in technology it’s not possible. Another issue is that different users have different needs, over the years we find it next to impossible to have one solution that keeps everybody happy so that is why we offer you a choice.

Right click copy to clipboard

A great new feature of version 5 is the ability to right click on a file, select convert and Word Cleaner will automatically convert the file and paste the contents into the clipboard ready to be pasted into another app or CMS. The right click supports up to three templates, and you can set the templates to use in the settings ribbon.

brand new easier to use interface

To keep it modern, we have given the app the new Office 2010 interface. We also have added a new settings ribbon to make some options easier to find.

Clicking the min/max button in the top right will show/hide the ribbon.

The bars that separate the sections of the screen can be dragged or if you click on them it will hide that section of the interface:

The add file list has been changed to make it more readable and cleaner.

The file list is now on the left to give you more room, note you can set the location of the file list in the settings ribbon.

In the settings tab you can select where you want to position the file list:

Improved Word Addin Bar

The addin bar has been completely redone. It now has more features and blends in better with the newer versions of Word.

Now supports conversion of open office odt files

For users of Open Office you can now convert the .dt file format to HTML.

Webkit Browser added as a preview option

Webkit is the browser engine used by the Google Chrome and Apple Safari Browsers.

New Pro Version

Word Cleaner now comes in 2 versions, standard and Pro. The Pro version has these additional features:

• Command line support
• Enhanced support – help with customising your templates to suit your needs
• Export to database – you will be able to bulk export files to a database format, you can then import the file into your database. This is idea for users who want to import data into a CMS. Please note this feature is not yet ready, it will be added to the 5.1 release, expected at the end of June. If you are interested in this feature please contact us as we are looking  for Beta testers.

Upgrade Policy

Any user who buys a copy of Word Cleaner from 20^th April 2011 will get a free upgrade to version 5 when it’s released. If all goes well version 5 will be released by the end of April. Existing version 4 users will get a discount when upgrading to version 5.

So which one should I use?

My advice is to try the Apollo engine first, then the Titan Engine. The MS Word engine should be tried last. The table below covers the key areas of difference. The table only shows areas of difference, features that work across all three conversion engines like XHTML support are not listed to keep things simple, assume anything not listed below will work across all three engines.

Webkit added as a preview option

We now support in built previewing of files with the webkit engine. This is the engine that powers google chrome and apple safari browser.

In the browser preview section you can choose to show IE and webkit side by side or just show one or the other.

We also added the code editor to the browser preview section.

Improved Word Addin Bar

We have improved the Word Addin Bar, it now has more options and you can even select the template to use.

Improved Template Editor

We have added built in preview to the template editor so you can test your template right in the editor section.

Mac and Server Versions Coming Soon!

We are also working on a version that will run on OSX, as well as a dedicated server version. These should be out within the next month or two providing everything goes ok. Email me if you want any more info on either version.

When is version 5 out?

Providing all goes well it should be out by the end of April. There will be a free upgrade to any users who buys version 4 during the month of april.

Lots of bug fixes

In this doc I am just listing the main new features but we have fixed dozens of bugs and added lots of changes to make things better. We will add a full list of bug fixes to the release version, if you are wondering about anything specifically do email me.

As you can see two of the files are ok, but two other files do not seem to be proper Word files, what’s going on?

To be honest I do not know what causes this problem, but I do know how to fix it.

All you need to do is save the files to your computer, you will notice the problem files do not have a file extension.

To fix the problem just rename the file by single clicking on it, and add the .doc extension to the end of the filename, you will find this magically converts it to a proper Word file and all should be well .
