I am a young religiously-committed man, and I have a brother in faith whom I love for the sake of Allaah. I saw him at the traffic lights with music playing loudly in his car, and I advised him in a direct manner without letting him know that I had seen him. He showed that he was sorry and had repented, and – according to what he said – he removed the music from his car and computer, praise be to Allaah. But a few days later, I saw him participating in chat rooms, talking in an indecent manner and writing down the names of songs. I recognized him by his screen name and his avatar. It seems that sometimes he talks on the internet with some of his female relatives who are not his mahrams.
Should I cut off ties with him, or should I take him as he appears to be, knowing that he accepts the advice without acting on it, and that outwardly he appears to be committed? His friends know him as such, but I know something about him that they do not know.
-
Praise be to Allaah.
The one who disobeys Allaah either disobeys Him openly or he conceals it. The one who disobeys openly should be forsaken – even if it goes on for a long time – if forsaking him will deter him from that or will make him do it less.
If he conceals it but it so happens that you see it, then he should be rebuked in secret and he should be advised but his fault should be concealed.
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever conceals (the fault of) a Muslim, Allaah will conceal him on the Day of Resurrection.” Agreed upon.
Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir saw a man standing with a woman and speaking with her. He said: “Allaah can see you, may Allaah conceal us and you.”
In such cases it is prescribed for you to forsake him on your own, if that forsaking will have an effect on him and will not result in any greater evil, such as his committing sin openly after having concealed it, or doing more of it after having done only a little, or doing something that is worse that that for which you forsook him.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Whoever commits evil openly must be rebuked and forsaken and criticized for that. This is what is meant by the phrase, “Whoever becomes shameless, talking about him is not gheebah (backbiting).” This is unlike one who conceals his sin and seeks to hide it; he should be concealed but he should be advised in secret and forsaken by one who knows his situation, until he repents.”
Majmoo’ al-Fataawa(28/220)
Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) included the hadeeth about Ka’b ibn Maalik staying behind from the campaign to Tabook in a chapter which he entitled: “Chapter: What is permitted of forsaking one who has sinned.”
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
What he meant by saying “Chapter: What is permitted of forsaking one who has sinned” is to explain the kind of forsaking (or boycotting) that is permitted, because of the general meaning of the prohibition on forsaking a person for no legitimate reason. Here he explains the reasons that justify forsaking someone, which is when a person has committed a sin, and it is justified for the one who found out about it to forsake him so that he will refrain from that.
Fath al-Baari(10/497)
It was narrated from Sa’eed ibn al-Jubayr that a relative of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mughaffal threw small pebbles and he told him not to do that. He said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade the throwing of small pebbles and said: “It does not kill the game or kill (or hurt) the enemy, rather it breaks a tooth or puts out an eye.” Then he did it again and he said: I told you that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade it, then you throw small pebbles again. I will never speak to you. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5162)and Muslim (1954).
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
This shows that innovators and evildoers and those who go against the Sunnah despite knowing it are to be forsaken, and that it is permissible to forsake them permanently. The prohibition on forsaking someone for more than three days applies to one who forsakes another for personal or worldly reasons. As for innovators and their ilk, they may be forsaken permanently. This hadeeth is one of those that support this view, along with similar hadeeths such as the hadeeth of Ka’b ibn Maalik and others.Sharh Muslim(13/106).
What you have to do with regard to your friend is advise him, exhort him, and remind him to fear the Hereafter. If he responds, then praise be to Allaah, and you will have the reward for that. If he persists secretly in his sin, then he deserves to be forsaken by you if you think that forsaking him will benefit him. If forsaking him will not benefit him, then we do not think that you should forsake him, rather we think that you should still keep company with him in the hope that that will benefit him.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
This forsaking varies according to whether the forsakers are strong or weak, many or few. If the aim is to rebuke the person, discipline him and deter the common folk from doing something like him, if the interest is clear in this case so that forsaking him will weaken evil or make evil disappear altogether, then it is prescribed. If neither the person who is forsaken nor anyone else will be deterred by that, rather the evil will increase, and the one who wants to forsake him is weak, and the evil consequences of that will outweigh the good, then it is not prescribed to forsake him, rather kindness towards some people will be more beneficial than forsaking them.
And forsaking some people is more beneficial than being kind to them. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was kind to some people and forsook others.Majmoo’ al-Fataawa(28/206).
Finally, we would like to point out that it is possible to advise him and guide him to goodness without confronting him with what he has done, especially his taking part in the chat rooms. It is also possible to advise him and send him a letter without him knowing who you are, if that will reduce his involvement in committing sin openly.
May Allaah guide us and you to that which He loves and which pleases Him, and make us all doers of good and resisters of evil.
And Allaah knows best.
What is the ruling on Eid al-Abraar which is celebrated in Shawwaal every year?
Praise be to Allaah.
One of the innovated things that happen in Shawwaal is the bid’ah (innovation) of “Eid al-Abraar” (the “festival of the righteous”), which is on the eighth day of Shawwaal.
After the people have completed the fast of Ramadaan, and they broke their fast on the first day of Shawwaal – the day of Eid al-Fitr – they start to fast the first six days of Shawwaal, and on the eighth day they celebrate an “eid” which they call Eid al-Abraar.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “With regard to celebrating occasions which are not prescribed in sharee’ah – such as some nights in Rabee’ al-Awwal which are called ‘Mawlid’, or some nights in Rajab, or the eighteenth of Dhu’l-Hijjah, or the first Friday in Rajab, or the eighth of Shawwaal which the ignorant call Eid al-Abraar – these are innovations which were not approved of by the salaf and they did not do these things. And Allaah knows best.” (Majmoo’ Fataawa Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, 25/298)
He also said: “With regard to the eighth of Shawwaal, it is not an Eid, neither for the righteous nor for the evil. It is not permissible for anyone to take it as an Eid or to do any of the things connected with celebrations on that day.” (al-Ikhtiyaaraat al-Fiqhiyyah, p. 199)
The celebrations of this “eid” take place in one of the famous mosques, where men and women mix freely, shake hands with one another and utter words of Jaahiliyyah when they shake hands. Then after that they go and make some foods especially for this occasion.” (al-Sunan wa’l-Mubtada’aatby al-Shuqayri, p. 166)

that are widespread inHajj:
·To commit a restriction of the state ofIhraam)sacral state(
intentionally, with noSharee'ah-approvedexcuse
·To harm Muslims through words and actions
·To refrain from advising one another and from enjoining good or forbidding evil
·To delay prayer from its due time
·To get involved in backbiting, tale-bearing, falsehood,
disputation, ill speechextravagance or stinginess in spending
·Vain trifling with food and bad manners
·Regarding sins as trivial, such as giving free rein to the sight and
hearing to what is unlawful
·Women crowding men, and disclosing what is impermissible for them to expose
·Hastiness or delaying when fulfilling the rites ofHajjin
theirSharee'ah-prescribed times, and lacking observance of the
boundaries outside which performing the rites ofHajjare not valid,
etc.
What a great loser is the one who tires himself and spends from his
property, transforms his status and appearance if he returns only with
the burden of the unlawful acts he committed and incurs upon himself
the wrath of Allaah, the Most Merciful!
Fifth: Striving in obedience and utilizing time:
In the verses which mentionHajj, there are references to urge the
slave of Allaah The Almighty to do more acts of worship at the time of
performing the rites ofHajj. An example of this is what Allaah The
Almighty mentioned )what means(:}And whatever good you do - Allaah
knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear
of Allaah.{]Quran 2:197[Among the most important acts of worship which
the slave of Allaah The Almighty should frequently occupy himself with
during performing the rites ofHajjare:
1-To observe the deeds of the heart: such as sincerity, love, reliance
upon Allaah, fear of Allaah, hope, honoring, submission, showing
neediness to Allaah, truthfulness in asking and supplicating Allaah,
repentance, turning to Allaah, patience, satisfaction and reassurance,
to the end of the series of those deeds in which the slave of Allaah
should engage duringHajj, since upon them Islam revolves.
Ibn Al-Qayyimsaid,"Whoever contemplates the Sharee'ah in its sources
and origins, will realize the relation between the deeds of organs and
those of hearts, and without the deeds of hearts, those of organs are
of no benefit."
2-To recite Quran andThikr)remembrance(, and ask for forgiveness:
Allaah The Almighty commanded pilgrims, in the verses that
mentionHajj, to remember Him, and ask Him for His forgiveness. Also,
the Prophet,, said, encouraging recitation ofTalbiyahandThikr:"No one
ever raises his voice with Talbiyah, nor ever says Takbeer but that he
is given the glad tidings )of entering Paradise(."]At-Tabaraani
inAl-Mu'jamAl-Awsat, and Al-Albaani inSaheeh Al-Jaami': Hasan[ it is
reported that the Prophet,, was asked:"Which pilgrim is the best?"he
said:"Whoever remembers Allaah most among
them."]inMusnad:Dha'eefHadeeth[
3-Striving to do good: Ibn Rajabsaid,
"Among the most comprehensive characteristics of righteousness needed
by a pilgrim is that with which the Prophetrecommended Abu Jurayy
Al-Hujaymisaying:"Do not disdain any act of goodness, even if it is to
pour water from your bucket into the utensil of a person who is
thirsty, to give the piece of rope, to give a shoelace, to move
something harmful from the way of people, to meet your brother with a
cheerful face, to meet your Muslim brother and greet him with peace,
or to ease the trouble of he who is distressed."
It is reported in anotherHadeeththat it was said,"O Messenger of
Allaah! Who is the most beloved of people to Allaah?"He said:"The most
beloved of people to Allaah is the most beneficial among them to
people."
4-GivingDa'wahto Allaah The Almighty: Ignorance is widespread among
pilgrims, and so are a lot of religious innovations, evildoings and
errors duringHajj, which requires the religious scholars and Islamic
callers to undertake their obligatory role of guiding, counseling and
instructing, enjoining good and forbidding evil with wisdom and good
instruction, and argument in a way that is best. Shujaa' Ibn
Al-Waleedsaid,"I performed Hajj in the company of Sufyaan, and he did
not weary of enjoining good and forbidding evil during his going and
returning."
5-Supplication and imploring Allaah:Hajjis one of the great seasons of
imploring Allaah and supplication which one should utilize, and show
submission to Allaah The Almighty on it. The Prophet,, said:"The best
supplication is the supplication )on the Day of(
'Arafah."]At-Tirmithi[ he also said:"The people who perform Hajj and
'Umrah are the guests of Allaah: He called them and they answered His
call, and they asked Him, and He gave them )what they asked
for(."]Saheeh Al-Jaami', Al-Albaani:Hasan[
6- Uprightness: The evidence for theHajjthat has been accepted by
Allaah The Almighty is that the Muslim pilgrim becomes upright
afterHajj, abides by obedience and leaves disobedience. Al-Hasan
Al-Basrisaid, "The )sign of the( Hajj Mabroor is that one returns as
abstaining from the worldly life, and desirous for the Hereafter."That
is attested by the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says )what
means(:}And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and
gives them their righteousness.{]Quran 47:17[
So beware, lest you would destroy what you have built, disperse what
you have collected, consume what you have obtained, with the result
that you would be overturned after guidance, and regress after
attaining purity.
You also should remember thatHajjeffaces all sins committed before it;
and that by yourHajj, you return )as sinless( as when you were a
newborn child just delivered by your mother. So, beware of meeting
Allaah The Almighty after that favor with sins. Rather, open a new
page in your life with Allaah The Almighty, the content of which is
obedience, and the title of which

Hajj & Umrah, - Common Mistakes inthe First Ten Days of Thul-Hijjah - II

Secondly: Mistakes made on the Day of 'Arafah
1- Abandoning fasting:
It should be taken into consideration that the Day of 'Arafah is the
best day of the first ten days ofThul-Hijjah, and abandoning fasting
of that day is a mistake that many of those who are not granted
success to do righteous deeds commit. It was narrated on the authority
of Abu Qataadah Al-Ansaarithat the Messenger of Allaah,, was asked
about the reward of fasting the day of 'Arafah and he said:"It
expiates sins of the past year and the coming year."]Muslim[
This is prescribed for those who are not pilgrims ofHajj. As for
pilgrims ofHajj, they are forbidden to observe fasting during that
day.
2- Neglecting or abandoning supplication:
Most people make very little supplication and some do not supplicate
at all. This is a grave mistake, because one who neglects supplication
on that day deprives oneself from the advantage of supplication during
the Day of 'Arafah. In aHadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah,, said:"The
best supplication is that of the Day of 'Arafah, and the best thing
that I and other prophets before me said, is: 'Laa illaaha illallaahu
wahdahu la shareeka lahu lahul mulk wa lahul hamd wa huwa 'ala kuli
sha'in qadeer )There is no deity but Allaah, Alone and there Has not
partners, sovereignty and praise belong to him, and Over all things He
Is Omnipotent(."]Maalik[
Commenting on thisHadeeth, Ibn 'Abdul Barrsaid, "The Hadeeth indicates
that supplication on the Day of 'Arafah is better than supplication on
other days. This also indicates the excellence of that day over other
days. This stands as evidence that some days are better than others.
Nevertheless, this is not realized unless there is a relevant
Sharee'ah text, such as excellence of Friday, 'Aashooraa' )the tenth
day of Muharram(, the day of 'Arafah as well as Mondays and Thursdays.
None of this is realized by analogy or reasoning. The Hadeeth stands
as evidence that supplication on the day of 'Arafah is most hopeful to
be answered, and that the best Thikr is: "Laa illaaha illallaahu
)there is no God but Allaah(."]At-Tamheed[
Thirdly: Mistakes made on the Day ofNahr
1- Not to go to the place of 'Eedprayer:
Some Muslims do not go the place of'Eedprayer, particularly youths.
This is a mistake, because this day is one of the greatest days in the
Sight of Allaah The Almighty. On the authority of 'Abdullaah bin
Qurtthe Prophet,, said:"The greatest day to Allaah is the day of Nahr
and then the day of Qarr )the 11th day of Thul-Hijjah(."]Abu Daawood[
2- Putting on unclean or old clothes on the day of'Eed:
Some Muslims go out to the place of'Eedprayer with unclean clothes
under the pretext that they would shave their head, clip their
fingers, take a bath and apply perfume after slaughtering
theUdh-hiyah)the'Eedsacrificial animal(. This is a mistake, because a
Muslim should follow the example of the Messenger of Allaah,, and go
out in a good appearance and new, perfumed clothes. On the authority
of Ibn 'Umarthe Messenger of Allaah,, used to put on the best clothes
on the two'Eeds. According to some of the righteous predecessors, it
is authentically proven that the Prophet,, used to
performGhuslfor'Eed. ]Fat-hul-Baari and Al-Mughnee[
3- Eating before performing the'Eedprayer:
This is against theSunnahof the Prophet,, because it is an act
ofSunnahon'EedAl-Adh-hathat one should not eat unless he has
slaughtered his sacrifice. `Abdullah bin Buraydah narrated on the
authority of his fatherthat he said:"The Messenger of Allaahused not
to go out on the day of )'Eed( Al-Fitr until he ate, and he used not
to eat on the day of )'Eed( Al-Adh-ha until he performed prayer ."
Ibn Al-Qayyimsaid,"On the day of 'Eed Al-Adh-ha, the Prophetused not
to eat unless he had returned from prayer, then he would eat from his
Udh-hiyah."]Zaad Al-Ma'aad[
4- Not to perform the'Eedprayer in congregation:
Some Muslims do not perform the'Eedprayer in congregation under the
pretext that it is just an act ofSunnah, not an obligation. It is true
that this prayer is an act ofSunnah, not an obligation; nevertheless,
a Muslim should not abandon it if he is able to perform it.'Eedprayer
is one of the Islamic rituals that should be performed by all Muslims;
old and young, men and women. A person who abandons it without
aSharee'ah-approved justification has committed a grave mistake.
5- Abandoning the'Eed'sKhutbah)sermon(:
It is a mistake to neglect the'EedKhutbah. A Muslim should listen to
theKhutbahdue to its great excellence.
6- Abandoning theSunnahregarding going to prayer from one road and
returning from another road:
The Prophet,, used to go to the'Eedprayer through one road and return
from another road. Some Muslims do not give importance to this act
ofSunnahand this is a mistake.
7- Abandoning the'Eedgreeting:
It is a mistake to neglect greeting Muslims on the day of'Eed. It is
recommended underSharee'ahfor Muslims to exchange visits, gather and
greet each other on the occasion of'Eed. During'Eed, one could greet
other Muslims saying, for example,"May Allaah accept from us and from
you"or similar statements which include noSharee'ahviolations.
8- Visiting graves on the day of'Eed:
Some Muslims visit the graves on the day of'Eedin order to greet a
dead father or relative. This is a grave mistake, because visiting
graves on such a good day is an innovated practice that has no grounds
in theSharee'ahof Islam. The Companionsdid not do this, although they
were the forerunners to do righteous deeds. The Messenger of Allaah,,
said:"]A person[ who innovates in our matter )i.e. religion( anything
that does not belong to it, it will be rejected."]Muslim[
The Prophet,, said:"Do not make my grave ]a place for[ 'Eed"]Abu
Daawood[. Shaykhul-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyahexplained the meaning of the
word "'Eed" in thisHadeeth, as referring to doing something on
certain occasions, or particular times of the year, month or weak, and
to repeat that act with the return of that occasion or particular day
or season. Shaykh-ul- Islam added saying that a person who has it as
habit to visit a grave on a certain time of the year, after'Eedprayer
every year, for example, has disobeyed the Prophetic commandment
expressed by theHadeeth. Shaykh-ul- Islam further explained that a
person who does this has introduced an innovated practice in our
religion, because the Messenger of Allaah,, neither did that nor
commanded us to do that; hence, doing that practice, thinking it to be
an act of obedience, contradicts the guidance of the ."

Hajj & Umrah, - Common Mistakes inthe First Ten Days of Thul-Hijjah - I

We are passing through one of the most honorable seasons of Allaah The
Almighty -- the first ten days ofThul-Hijjah. This blessed period is
an opportunity to offer many voluntary acts of worship with which the
servant can draw himself nearer to Allaah The Almighty hoping to gain
an advantage which would entitle him to happiness in this life and in
the Hereafter. Such blessings will protect him from the agonies of
death and its severity; the grave and its darkness; and
theSiraat)Bridge( and its slips.
The first ten days ofThul-Hijjahare a favored season because numerous
different acts of worship are performed during it and this is not
possible in other seasons. Al-Haafithsaid,"The reason behind the
excellence of the first ten days of Thul-Hijjah is that they include
the fundamental acts of worship: prayer, fasting, charity and Hajj.
There is not any other time in the year when all four acts of worship
are combined."]Fat-h-ul Baari[
Given that, we would like to alert readers against some mistakes that
some Muslims make during theHajjseason, so that they know and avoid
them. Success is sought only from Allaah The Almighty!
Firstly: General mistakes
1- Paying no attention to these days:
Some people spend the ten days ofThul-Hijjahwithout paying them the
least attention. This is a manifest mistake, because such days are
greatly favored over other days. In aHadeeth)narration(, the Prophet,,
said:"There are no days on which righteous deeds are dearer to Allaah
than they are on these ten days."
2- NeglectingTasbeeh,TahleelandTakbeertherein :
Many Muslims commit this mistake during the ten days ofThul-Hijjah.
Rather, a Muslim is required to repeatTakbeer)saying:Allaah-u-Akbar(
as soon as the ten days come and to continue until the last of the
days ofTashreeq. Allaah The Exalted says )what means(:
*.}And mention the Name of Allaah on known days....{]Quran 22: 28[
*.}And remember Allaah during ]specific[ numbered days....{]Quran 2: [
Commenting on these verses, Ibn 'Abbaassaid that the known days are
the ten days ofThul-Hijjahand the numbered days are the days
ofTashreeq. ]Saheeh Al-Bukhaari[
It is reported that Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrahused to go to the market
during the first ten days ofThul-Hijjahand reciteTakbeerand then
people would imitate them. ]Al-Bukhaari[
ForTakbeerto be valid and acceptable, it should not be recited in a
collective manner and it must not be accompanied by swinging, dancing
or music. One is also required to adhere to theAthkaar)remembrance( of
the PropheticSunnah)tradition( and avoid saying or doing anything that
might have a polytheistic connotation.
3- Women sayingTakbeerandTahleelloudly:
It is not reported that the Mothers of the BelieversrecitedTakbeerin
loud voices. Women should avoid making such mistakes as well as
others.
4- Addition to theSunnah-approved wording ofTakbeer:
It is a mistake to add to the establishedSunnahversion ofTakbeer. The
most authentic manner ofTakbeeris:"Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar
Kabeeran )Allaah is Greatest(."]'Abdur-Raazaaq[
The same manner is also reported on the authority of Sa'eed bin
Jubayr, Mujaahid and others. ]Ja'far Al-Firyaabi[
Ash-Shaafi'iadopted this version and added:"Wa lillaahi-l-hamd )And
praise is due to Allaah(."
According to another opinion, it is:"Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar,
Allaah-u-Akbar, Laa illaaha illaallaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah
)Allaah is Greatest, there is no deity but Allaah alone and there are
no partners to Him(."
According to a third opinion, it is:"Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar,
Laa illaaha illaallaa, Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar,
Wa lillaahi-l-hamd."
This last version is reported on the authority of 'Umar and Ibn
Mas'ood. This is also the view of Ahmad and Is-haaq. ]Fat-hul Baari[
To sum up this point, there are two authentic wordings forTakbeer:
* Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar, Laa illaaha illaallaah,
wallaah-u-Akbar, wa lillaahi-l-hamd.
* Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar, Allaah-u-Akbar Kabeera.
Some books of the schools of jurisprudence, such asAl-Majmoo', mention
additions to the aforesaid manner which are inauthentic. Perhaps such
additions are said in occasions other than the first ten days
ofThul-Hijjah.
5- Fasting during the days ofTashreeq:
This is forbidden, because they are days of'Eedand during which one
eats and drinks. In aHadeeth, the Prophet,, said:"The day of 'Arafah
)the 9thday of Thul-Hijjah((, the day of Nahr ))the 10thday of
Thul-Hijjah(( and the days of Tshreeq are 'Eed for us, Muslims. They
are days for eating and drinking."]Abu Daawood[
6- Observing voluntary fasting while one is required to observe
fasting for days that were missed during Ramadan:
Some people fast one, two, three days or more during the ten days
ofThul-Hijjahwhile they are required to make up for fasts that they
missed inRamadan. This is a mistake that should be avoided, because
making up for missed obligatory fasts is an obligation while fasting
during these ten days is an act ofSunnah)Prophetic tradition( and it
is impermissible to give precedence to acts ofSunnahover obligations.
Consequently, it is obligatory for one who is required to make up for
missedRamadanfasts to observe the obligatory fasting before observing
any voluntary fasting.
Some people harbor multiple intentions when observing a single fast
in order to get multiple rewards, such as one fasting on a day while
harboring the intention of making up for a missedRamadanfast, fasting
a day ofThul-Hijjahas well as fasting on Monday or Thursday, all
intentions for only one fasted day. Such practice is ungrounded. None
of the Companionsadopted this view. Mixing acts of worship is a
serious matter and Muslims must not indulge in that.
As for
pilgrims ofHajj, they are forbidden to observe fasting during that
day.

Health, - Scholar Alert - [ Hipertention, Diabetic foot syndrome ]

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Undoubtedly children are a source of great joy and delight; they make
life sweet, bring morerizqinto a family's life and give hope. A father
sees his children as a future source of help and support, as well as
representing an increase in numbers and perpetuation of the family. A
mother sees her children as a source of hope, consolation and joy in
life, and as hope for the future. All of these hopes rest on the good
upbringing of the children and giving them a sound preparation for
life, so that they will become active and constructive elements in
society, a source of goodness for their parents, community and society
as a whole. Then they will be as (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) described them:
( Wealth and sons are allurements of the life of this world . . .)
(Qur'an 18:46)
If their education and upbringing are neglected, they will become bad
characters, a burden on their family, community and society as a
whole.
She understands the great responsibility that she has towards her children
The Muslim woman never forgets that the mother's responsibility in
bringing up the children and forming their characters is greater than
that of the father, because children tend to be closer to their mother
and spend more time with her; she knows all about their behavioral,
emotional and intellectual development during their childhood and the
difficult years of adolescence.
Hence the woman who understands the teachings of Islam and her own
educational role in life, knows her complete responsibility for the
upbringing of her children, as is referred to in the Qur'an:
( O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire
whose fuel is Men and Stones . . .) (Qur'an 66:6)
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) also referred to this
responsibility in his hadith:
"Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his
flock. The leader is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock; a
man is the shepherd of his family and is responsible for his flock; a
woman is the shepherd in the house of her husband and is responsible
for her flock; a servant is the shepherd of his master's wealth and is
responsible for it. Each of you is a shepherd and is responsible for
his flock."1
Islam places responsibility on the shoulders of every individual; not
one person is left out. Parents - especially mothers - are made
responsible for providing their children with a solid upbringing and
sound Islamic education, based on the noble characteristics that the
Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) declared that he had been sent
to complete and spread among people:
"I have only been sent to make righteous behavior complete."2
Nothing is more indicative of the greatness of the parents'
responsibility towards their children and their duty to give them a
suitable Islamic upbringing than the verdict of the'ulama'that every
family should heed the words of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa
sallam):
"Instruct your children to pray when they are seven and hit them if
they do not do so when they are ten."3
Any parents who are aware of this hadith but do not teach their
children to pray when they reach seven or hit them if they do not do
so when they reach ten, are parents who are sinners and failing in
their duty; they will be responsible before Allah (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala) for their failure.
The family home is a microcosm of society in which the children's
mentality, intellect, attitudes and inclinations are formed when they
are still very small and are ready to receive sound words of guidance.
Hence the parents' important role in forming the minds of their sons
and daughters and directing them towards truth and good deeds is quite
clear.
Muslim woman have always understood their responsibility in raising
their children, and they have a brilliant record in producing and
influencing great men, and instill ling noble values in their
hearts. There is no greater proof of that than the fact that
intelligent and brilliant women have produced more noble sons than
have intelligent and brilliant men, so much so that you can hardly
find any among the great men of ourummahwho have controlled the course
of events in history who is not indebted to his mother.
Al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam was indebted for his greatness to his mother
Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, who instill led in him his good
qualities and distinguished nature.
'Abdullah, al-Mundhir and 'Urwah, the sons of al-Zubayr were the
products of the values instill led in them by their mother, Asma'
bint Abi Bakr, and each of them made his mark in history and attained
a high status.
'Ali ibn Abi Talib (radhiallahu anhu) received wisdom, virtue and good
character from his distinguished mother, Fatimah bint Asad.
'Abdullah ibn Ja'far, the master of Arab generosity and the most noble
of their leaders, lost his father at an early age, but his mother
Asma' bint 'Umays took care of him and give him the virtues and noble
characteristics by virtue of which she herself became one of the great
women of Islam.
Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan inherited his strength of character and
intelligence from his mother, Hind bint 'Utbah, not from his father
Abu Sufyan. When he was a baby, she noticed that he had intelligent
and clever features. Someone said to her, "If he lives, he will become
the leader of his people." She responded, "May he not live if he is to
become the leader of his people alone!"
Mu'awiyah was unable to instill his cleverness, patience and
skills in his own son and and heir, Yazid, because the boy's mother
was a simple Bedouin woman, whom he had married for her beauty and
because of the status of her tribe and family.
Mu'awiyah's brother Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan, who was a prime example of
intelligence, shrewdness and quick-wittedness, was similarly unable to
pass these qualities on to his son 'Ubayd-Allah (subhanahu wa
ta'ala) who grew up to be stupid, clumsy, impotent and ignorant. His
mother was Marjanah, a Persian woman who possessed none of the
qualities that might entitle her to be the mother of a great man.
History records the names of two great men of Banu Umayyah, the first
of whom was known for his strength of character, capability,
intelligence, wisdom and decisiveness, and the second of whom took the
path of justice, goodness, piety and righteousness.
The first was 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, whose mother was 'A'ishah bint
al-Mughirah ibn Abi'l-'As ibn Umayyah, who was well-known for her
strength of character, resolution and intelligence. The second was
'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz (radhiallahu anhu), the fifth of thekhulafa'
al-rashidun, whose mother was Umm 'Asim bint 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn
al-Khattab, who was the most noble in character of the women of her
time. Her mother was the righteous worshipper of Allah (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala) whom 'Asim saw was honest and truthful, and clearly following
the right path, when she refused to add water to the milk as her
mother told her to, because she knew that Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala)
could see her.
If we turn towards Andalusia, we find the brilliant, ambitious ruler
'Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir who, having started life as an orphan, went on
to establish an Islamic state in the West, to which the leaders and
kings of Europe surrendered and to whose institutes of learning the
scholars and philosophers of all nations came to seek knowledge. This
state made a great contribution to worldwide Islamic culture. If we
were to examine the secret of this man's greatness, we would find that
it lay in the greatness of his mother who knew how to instill in him
the dynamic spirit of ambition.
During the 'Abbasid period there were two great women who planted the
seeds of ambition, distinction and ascendancy in their sons. The first
was the mother of Ja'far ibn Yahya, who was thewazirof
thekhalifahHarun al-Rashid. The second was the mother of Imam
al-Shafi'i: he never saw his father who died whilst he was still a
babe in arms; it was his mother who took care of his education.
There are many such examples of brilliant women in our history, women
who instill led in their sons nobility of character and the seeds of
greatness, and who stood behind them in everything they achieved of
power and status.
She uses the best methods in bringing them up
The intelligent Muslim woman understands the psychology of her
children, and is aware of their differences in attitudes and
inclination. She tries to penetrate their innocent world and plant the
seeds of noble values and worthy characteristics, using the best and
most effective methods of parenting.
The mother is naturally close to her children, and she endears herself
to them so that they will be open with her and will share their
thoughts and feelings with her. She hastens to correct them and refine
their thoughts and feelings, taking into account each child's age and
mental level. She plays and jokes with them sometimes, complimenting
them and letting then hear words of love, affection, compassion and
self-denial. Thus their love for her increases, and they will accept
her words of guidance and correction eagerly. They will obey her out
of love for her, for there is a great difference between sincere
obedience that comes from the heart, which is based on love, respect
and trust, and insincere obedience that is based on oppression,
violence and force. The former is lasting obedience, strong and
fruitful, whilst the latter is shallow and baseless, and will quickly
vanish when the violence and cruelty reach extreme levels.
She demonstrates her love and affection for them
The Muslim woman is not ignorant of the fact that her children need
her warm lap, deep love and sincere affection in order to develop
soundly, with no psychological problems, crises or complexes. This
sound upbringing will fill them with optimism, trust, hope and
ambition. Thus the caring Muslim mother demonstrates her love and
affection for her children on every occasion, flooding their lives
with joy and happiness and filling their hearts with confidence and
security.
The true Muslim woman is compassionate towards her children, for
compassion is a basic Islamic characteristic, one that was encouraged
by the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in word and deed as Anas
(radhiallahu anhu) tells us:
"I never saw anyone who was more compassionate towards children than
Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam). His son Ibrahim was
in the care of a wet-nurse in the hills around Madinah. He would go
there, and we would go with him, and he would enter the house, pick up
his son and kiss him, then come back."4
The Prophet's compassion and love towards Muslim children included
little ones at play. He would flood them with his compassion and
affection. Anas (radhiallahu anhu) reported that whenever the Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) passed by a group of boys he would
smile fondly and greet them.5
An example of the Prophet's enduring wisdom with regard to the
upbringing of children is the hadith:
"He is not one of us who does not show compassion to our little ones
and recognize the rights of our elders."6
Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) kissed al-Hasan ibn 'Ali. Al-Aqra' ibn Habis said,
"I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them." The Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "He who does not show mercy will
not be shown mercy."7
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam), this great educator,
always sought to instill the quality of mercy and compassion in
people's hearts, and to awaken their potential for love and affection,
which are the most basic of human characteristics.
One day a Bedouin came and asked the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa
sallam), "Do you kiss your sons? We do not." The Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) said, "What can I do for you if Allah (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala) has removed mercy from your heart?"8
'A'ishah (radhiallahu anha) reported:
"Whenever Fatimah (radhiallahu anha) came into the room, the Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) would stand up, welcome her, kiss her
and offer her his seat, and whenever he came into the room, she would
stand up, take his hand, welcome him, kiss him and offer him her seat.
When she came to see him during his final illness, he welcomed her and
kissed her."9
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) praised the women of
Quraysh, because they were the most compassionate of women towards
their children, the most concerned with raising them properly and
making sacrifices for them, in addition to taking good care of their
husbands. This may be seen in the words narrated by Bukhari from Abu
Hurayrah (radhiallahu anhu), who said:
"I heard Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) say: 'The
women of Quraysh are the best women ever to ride camels. They are
compassionate towards their children and the most careful with regard
to their husbands' wealth"10
In the light of this guidance, the true Muslim woman cannot be stern
towards her children and treat them in a rough or mean fashion, even
if it is her nature to be grim and reserved, because this religion,
with its enlightenment and guidance, softens hearts and awakens
feelings of love and affection. So our children are a part of us,
going forth into the world, as the poet Hittan ibn al-Mu'alla said:
"Our children are our hearts, walking among us on the face of the
earth, if even a little breeze touches them, we cannot sleep for
worrying about them."11
Parents should be filled with love, affection and care, willing to
make sacrifices and do their best for their children. Undoubtedly
the wealth of emotion that the Muslim mother feels for her children is
one of the greatest causes of her happiness in life. This is something
which has been lost by Western women, who are overwhelmed by
materialism and exhausted by the daily grind of work, which has caused
them to lose the warmth of family feelings. This was vividly expressed
by Mrs. Salma al-Haffar, a member of the Syrian women's movement,
after she had visited America:
"It is truly a shame that women lose the most precious thing that
nature12has given them, i.e. their femininity, and then their
happiness, because the constant cycle of exhausting work has caused
them to lose the small paradise which is the natural refuge of women
and men alike, one that can only flourish under the care of a mother
who stays at home. The happiness of individuals and society as a whole
is to be found at home, in the lap of the family; the family is the
source of inspiration, goodness and creativity."13
She treats her sons and daughters equally
The wise Muslim woman treats all her children fairly and equally. She
does not prefer one of them over another in any way, because she knows
that Islam forbids such actions on the part of the parents, and
because of the negative psychological impact that this may have over
the child whose sibling is preferred over him. The child who feels
that he is not treated equally with his brothers and sisters will grow
up with complexes and anxiety, eating his heart out with jealousy and
hatred. In contrast, the child who grows up feeling that he and his
siblings are treated equally will grow up healthy and free from
jealousy and hatred; he will be content, cheerful, tolerant and
willing to put others before himself. This is what Islam requires of
parents and urges them to do.
Bukhari, Muslim and others report that the father of al-Nu'man ibn
Bashir (radhiallahu anhu) brought him to the Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) and said, "I have given this son of mine a slave I
have." The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Have you
given each of your children the same?" He said, "No." The Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) told him, "Then take the slave back."
According to another report:
"The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) asked, 'Have you done the
same for all your children?' [My father] said, 'No,' so the Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, 'Fear Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala)
and treat all of your children equally.'"
According to a third report:
"The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) asked, 'O Bishr, do you
have any other children?' He said, 'Yes.' The Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) asked, 'Will you give a similar gift to each of
them?' He said, 'No.' So the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
said, 'Do not ask me to witness this, because I do not want to witness
unfairness.' Then he added, 'Would you not like all your children to
treat you with equal respect?' [Bishr] said, 'Of course.' The Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) told him, 'So do not do it.'"14
So the Muslim woman who truly fears Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) treats
all her children with equal fairness, and does not favor one above the
other in giving gifts, spending money on them, or in the way she
treats them. Then all of them will love her, will pray for her and
will treat her with kindness and respect.
She does not discriminate between sons and daughters her affection and care
The true Muslim woman does not discriminate between her sons and
daughters in her affection and car, as do some women who are not free
from the effects of ajahilimentality. She is fair to all her children,
boys and girls alike, and cares for them all with compassion and love.
She understands that children are a gift from Allah (subhanahu wa
ta'ala) and that Allah's (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) gift, be it of sons or
daughters, cannot be rejected or changed:
( . . . He bestows [children] male or female according to His Will
[and Plan], or He bestows both males and females, and He leaves barren
Whom He will: for He is full of knowledge and power.) (Qur'an
42:49-50)
The Muslim woman who is truly guided by her religion does not forget
the great reward that Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) has prepared for the
one who brings up daughters and takes care of them properly, as is
stated in numeroussahihhadith, for example the hadith narrated by
Bukhari from 'A'ishah (radhiallahu anha) in which she says:
"A woman came to me with her two daughters and asked me (for charity).
She found that I had nothing except for a single date, which I gave to
her. She took it and divided it between her two daughters, and did not
eat any of it herself, then she got up and left with her daughters.
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came in and I told him what
had happened.
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Whoever is tested
with daughters and treats them well, they will be for him a shield
against the Fire of Hell."15
According to another report narrated by Muslim from 'A'ishah (May
Allah be pleased with her), she said:
"A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three
dates to eat. She gave each child a date, and raised the third to her
own mouth to eat it. Her daughters asked her to give it to them, so
she split the date that she had wanted to eat between them. I was
impressed by what she had done, and told Allah's Messenger
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) about it. He said, "Allah (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala) has decreed Paradise for her because of it," or, "He has saved
her from Hell because of it."16
Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever has three daughters, and shelters them, bearing their joys
and sorrows with patience, Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) will admit him
to Paradise by virtue of his compassion towards them." A man asked,
"What if he has only two, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Even if
they are only two." Another man asked, "What if he has only one, O
Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Even if he has only one."17
Ibn 'Abbas (radhiallahu anhu) said:
" Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: 'Whoever had
a daughter born to him, and he did not bury her alive or humiliate
her, and he did not prefer his son over her, Allah (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala) will admit him to Paradise because of her."18
The Prophet's compassion extended to females, and included sisters as
well as daughters, as is seen in the hadith narrated by Bukhari
inal-Adab al-Mufradfrom Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said:
"The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: 'There is no-one who
has three daughters, or three sisters, and he treats them well, but
Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) will admit him to Paradise."19
According to a report given by al-Tabarani, the Prophet (sallallahu
'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"There is no one among myummahwho has three daughters, or three
sisters, and he supports them until they are grown up, but he will be
with me in Paradise like this -" and he held up his index and middle
fingers together.20
No wise mother complains about bringing up daughters, or prefers her
sons over them, if she listens to the teachings of the Prophet
(sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) which raise the status of daughters and
promise Paradise as wide as heaven and earth and the company of the
Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to the one who brings them up
and treats them properly!
In the Muslim family, and in the true Islamic society, girls are
protected, loved and respected. In the warm bosom of her parents
-especially her mother - a girl will always find protection and care,
no matter how long she stays in the home of her parents, brothers or
other family members who should support her, whether she is married or
not. Islam has guaranteed girls a life of protection, pride and
support, and has spared them from a life of humiliation, need, want
and having to earn a living, such as is the lot of women living in
societies that have gone astray from the guidance of Allah (subhanahu
wa ta'ala). In those countries, a girl barely reaches the age of
eighteen before she leaves the comfort of her parents' home to face
the hardships of a life filled with difficulties and risks at the time
when she is most in need of protection, compassion and care.
There is a huge difference between the laws of Allah (subhanahu wa
ta'ala) which came to bring happiness to mankind, and the imperfect
man-made laws which cause nothing but misery.
It comes as no surprise that in the West, as a result of these
materialistic laws, we see armies of promiscuous young men and hordes
of unfortunate, miserable, unmarried young mothers, the numbers of
which are increasing exponentially day by day.
She does not pray against her children
The wise Muslim woman does not pray against her own children, heeding
the words of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) who forbade
such prayers lest they be offered at a time when prayers are answered.
This was stated in the lengthy hadith narrated by Jabir in which the
Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Do not pray against yourselves, or against your children, or against
your wealth, in case you say such words at a time when Allah
(Subhanahu wa ta'ala) will answer your prayer."21
Praying against one's own children is not a good habit. No mother does
so at a time of anger, but she will regret it later on after she has
calmed down. I do not think that a mother who has truly sought the
guidance of Islam would lose her mind and her equilibrium to such an
extent that she would pray against her own children, no matter what
they did. Such a woman would not allow herself to indulge in something
that is done only by foolish, hot-tempered women.
She is alert to everything that may have an influence on them
The smart Muslim mother keeps her eyes open as far as her children are
concerned. She knows what they are reading and writing, the hobbies
and activities they persue, the friends they have chosen, and the
places they go to in their free time. She knows all of this without
her children feeling that she is watching them. If she finds anything
objectionable in their hobbies, reading-materials, etc., or if she
sees them hanging around with undesirable friends, or going to
unsuitable places, or taking up bad habits such as smoking, or wasting
time and energy onharamgames that teach them to get used to
trivialities, she hastens to correct her children in a gentle and wise
manner, and persuades them to return to the straight and narrow. The
mother is more able to do this than the father, because she spends
much more time with the children, and they are more likely to open up
and share their thoughts and feelings with her than with their father.
Hence it is quite clear that the mother has a great responsibility to
bring up her children properly and form their characters in a sound
fashion, in accordance with Islamic principles, values and traditions.
Every child is born in a state offitrah(the natural, good, disposition
of mankind), and it is the parents who make him into a Jew, a
Christian or a Magian, as the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
said in thesahihhadith narrated by Bukhari.
There is no secret about the enormous impact the parents have on the
personality and psychological development of their child from the
earliest years until the child attains the age of reason.
The books that children read should open their minds and form their
personalities well, giving them the highest examples to follow; they
should not corrupt their minds and extinguish the light of goodness in
their souls.
Hobbies should help to develop the positive aspects of a child's
nature and reinforce good tastes, not encourage any negative
tendencies.
Friends should be of the type that will lead one to Paradise, not to
Hell; they should influence a child in a positive way and encourage
him to do good, to strive to improve himself and to succeed, not drag
him down into sin, disobedience and failure. How many people have been
brought to the slippery slope of destruction and perdition by their
friends, whilst their mothers and fathers were unaware of what was to
their own children! How wise are the words of the poet 'Adiyy ibn Zayd
al-'Ibadi concerning friends:
"If you are among people, then make friends with the best of them.
Do not make friends with the worst of them lest you become as bad as he is.
Do not ask about the man, but ask about his friends, for every person
is influenced by his friends."22
The true Muslim mother takes notice of her children's books,
magazines, hobbies, school, teachers, clubs, media interests, and
everything that may have an impact on their personalities, minds,
souls and faith. She intervenes when necessary, either to encourage or
to put a stop to something, so that the children's upbringing will not
be affected by corruption or sickness.
Successful upbringing of children depends on a mother who is alert and
intelligent, and understands her responsibility towards her children,
so that she does a good job and raises children who will be a boon to
their parents and society in general. Families that fail to raise
their children properly usually do so because the mother does not
understand her responsibility towards her children, so she neglects
them and they become a source of evil and a torment to their parents
and others.
Children would not become a source of evil if their parents,
especially the mother, knew their responsibility and took it
seriously.
She instills good behavior and attitudes in them
The Muslim woman tries hard to instill in her children's hearts
the best qualities, such as loving others, upholding the ties of
kinship, caring for the weak, respecting elders, showing compassion to
little ones, deriving satisfaction from doing good, being sincere in
word and deed, keeping promises, judging fairly, and all other good
and praiseworthy characteristics.
The wise Muslim woman knows how to reach her children's hearts and
instill these worthy qualities, using the best and most effective
methods, such as setting a good example, coming down to their level,
treating them well, encouraging them, advising and correcting them,
and being compassionate, kind, tolerant, loving, and fair. She is
gentle without being too lenient, and is strict without being harsh.
Thus the children receive a proper upbringing, and grow up
open-minded, mature, righteous, sincere, good, able to give and
prepared to make a constructive contribution in all aspects of life.
Not surprisingly, the Muslim mother's upbringing produces the best
results, for she is the first school and the first teacher, as the
poet said:
"The mother is a school: if you prepare her properly, you will prepare
an entire people of good character, The mother is the first teacher,
foremost among them, and the best of teachers."23

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso (Spanish artist who lived in France) to Raphael (Italian painter). They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.
About a month later, just before Eid ul-Fitr, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.
He said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art."
The young man held out this package. "I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this."
The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. "Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift."
The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.
On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. "We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?"
There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, "We want to see the famous paintings! Skip this one."
But the auctioneer persisted. "Will somebody bid for this painting. Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?"
Another voice angrily, "We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs (Dutch painter), the Rembrandts (Dutch artist). Get on with the real bids!"
But still the auctioneer continued. "The son! The son! Who'll take the son?" Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. 'I'll give $10 for the painting.' Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.
We have $10, who will bid $20? Give it to him for $10. "Let's see the masters...." $10 is the bid, won't someone bid $20?
The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.
The auctioneer pounded the gavel. "Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!"
A man sitting on the second row shouted, "Now let's get on with the collection!"
The auctioneer laid down his gavel. "I'm sorry, the auction is over."
"What about the great paintings?"
I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!
Allah (SWT) gave His Noble Qur'an hundreds of years ago to guide us. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: "The Noble Qur'an, the Noble Qur'an, who'll take the Noble Qur'an? Because whoever takes the Noble Qur'an gets everything."
