Home Business Owners Don’t Get as Much Work Done

One of the most overused arguments against working from home is that, because you’re in the comfort of your house instead of an office, your productivity will tumble downhill. While this can be true for some individuals, it has nothing to do with your physical location but more to do with your personal work ethic. Individuals in an office have many opportunities to welcome distractions as well; social media profiles, music, online videos, and even the person sitting next to them can all get in the way of daily responsibilities. Whether you’re working in an office or your living room, it’s dedication, organization, and focus that will determine your success.

You Can’t Make Enough Money to Support Yourself

With all the scams from home businesses getting attention, it’s not much of a surprise that individuals have developed doubts about the stability of working from home. However, despite the negative media attention, many people make more than enough money to support themselves by running their home office. As with any business, a slow start can be expected, but depending on how you market yourself and what you’re selling, there is no reason why you can’t live comfortably. How much money you make is dependent on how many hours you put it, how much money you initially invest in your start up, and if the product or service you’re selling is in high demand; clearly, the rules of pursuing a home career aren’t much different than those of a brick and mortar start up.

You Have to Sell a Product in Order to be Successful

The belief that home businesses have to sell a tangible item turns many people away from considering a home-based career. While the majority of the home markets out there do make a living selling products, there are many that purely sell services. Tutoring via webcam, editing books or other forms of publications, and giving advice in an area you’re qualified to do so (legal, natural health, etc.,) are all outlets that allow you to be successful without having to worry about physically creating and shipping a product.

You Don’t Have to Worry about Childcare

Unfortunately, home careers appeal to many parents because they feel that they can save on child care, but the reality is that if you’re running your own business and have young kids running around needing attention, your business will suffer. Some business owners/parents do manage to make it work, but if you doubt your ability to care for your kids and give full attention to your company at the same time, it might be in your best interest to look into a day care center or an in-home care option. Considering the money you’re saving on office rent and commuting, the tradeoff shouldn’t be detrimental.

Your Home Insurance Policy Will Cover Damages to Your In-Home Business

This is an important factor to keep in mind, and unfortunately, it’s one that many home-based business owners fail to realize. Home owners insurance generally won’t cover much, if any, financial losses due to damaged computers, lost data, or injuries in your home. To help ensure the safety of your business, make sure you’re adequately covered beforehand to protect yourself, your business, and any clientele who step into your home office.

Despite all the myths surrounding home businesses, a successful one isn’t impossible. In fact, more individuals every day are looking to quit their day jobs and transition into the exciting world of self-employment, and while there are critics who oppose it, as well as individuals who are misinformed, if you have the work ethic and care enough to seek out the correct information, you should have no problem getting your home business off the ground.

So what is a pyramid? First, a pyramid scheme is not defined by its shape. If the shape determined legality of an organization, the government and most businesses would be illegal since the hierarchy is a pyramid. Second, the act of recruiting others into a business opportunity doesn’t automatically mean a business is a pyramid scheme. Instead, a pyramid is a scam that promises monetary benefit without a quality product or service. In an illegal network marketing scam, participants are paid to recruit new members instead of on product sales. This is where things can get confusing. While you can earn income by introducing new business builders into a network marketing company, your income should NOT be based on recruitment. Instead, legitimate income in network marketing is based on you and your team’s product and service sales. Some Internet programs try to get by this rule by having a “membership” program with junk ebooks or services to qualify as products. You can spot these because the focus is on recruiting not on providing a product or service. Be suspicious of any business that focuses on payment per recruit.

Bernie Madoff ran a pyramid scheme in which people thought they were putting their money into legitimate investments; however, Bernie did not invest the money. Instead, he “paid” initial investors with money from newer investors. I had a friend who was invited to an investment “club” whereby he could invest $5000 and the club then would help him find five other people to invest $5000. Essentially the scam promised to net $20,000 from a $5,000 investment. Sometimes these clubs are called “gifting” programs, but regardless of what they’re called, they are illegal because they promise financial gain without a product, service or legitimate investment instrument.

Ultimately, if the only way to make money is by getting others to “join”, then it’s probably a pyramid scheme. But if the income is based on the sale of a product or service, or a legitimate investment tool (i.e. stocks), then it’s probably safe. Before joining any program, do your research. Scammers are clever in their deception and will try to make their scam look legit. So don’t be afraid to investigate, ask questions and seek expert opinions before joining any money-making venture.

It’s my opinion that while you don’t want to rely solely on SEO, you don’t want to ignore it either. About 30% of the traffic into Work-At-Home Success comes from search engines, suggesting how important SEO is to a web marketing strategy. So while I don’t spend a great deal of time monitoring my search engine rankings, I do work to make sure my sites are optimized so that search engines can find and rank them.

The basics of SEO involve:

Keywords

These are the words that your target market uses to search for your products or services online.  You use these keywords in the meta tags and content of your site to help search engines index and rank your site. Don’t just rely on your ideas for keywords. Use a tool such as Google’s Keyword Tool that will tell you what keywords and phrases web-searchers are using now to find information on your topic. While it would be nice to ranked number one for all your keywords, odds are you won’t. But, you can rank number one for a few and still rank well for others.

Meta-Tags

Meta-tags are hidden code on your website or blog that search engines use to index and list your site. The most common meta-tags for SEO are “Title”, “Keywords” and “Description”. Each page of your website or blog should have these tags specific to the content of the page. When I first started Work-At-Home Success, all the pages had the same meta tags. Today, each page gets it own title, keywords and description. Your website software should have a feature to let you add meta-tags to your pages. My sites are mostly WordPress on which I use the All-In-One SEO Pack or Greg’s High Performance SEO.

Content

Search engines also scan your website page to see what keywords are used. To ensure relevance, you want to use your keywords and variations of your keywords without overdoing it. For example, when I’m writing about work-at-home jobs, I also use words like work-from-home jobs, telecommuting jobs or home-based employment. But don’t stuff your content with keywords either or that could hurt your rankings. In most cases, if you write content your visitors want to read, you’ll be using the right words in the right amounts. Be sure to use a keyword in your content title.

Link Popularity and External Linking

One way search engines determine if you offer quality content others want to read, is to check how many other sites are linking to you.  This isn’t just how many sites link to you, but the quality of the sites as well. Further, the search engines want to know what types of sites you’re linking out to. Even when it comes to search engine ranking, the quality of company you keep is important. Great ways to increase your link popularity are to write articles and guest posts for other websites that target your market, and social networking and bookmarking. Also, check that all the links you offer that leave your site provide the same high quality products or information that you do.

Still confused? I believe that if you use the meta tags and offer content people want to read, search engines will find you and like you.  Just remember that SEO isn’t something you do once and then forget it. The search engines are constantly finding and ranking new information posted online. To stay at the top, you need to continue to provide quality search engine optimized content.

Hi Leslie, How can I accept payments for my products off-line? I have a PayPal account I use online, but do I have to get an merchant account for offline sales? – Selena

Hi Selena,
PayPal has come a long way since it’s start and now you can get a gizmo that swipes credit cards through your smart phone. The gizmo is free, but you have the transaction fees associated with processing a payment. I have the PayPal Here device, although I haven’t yet used it. The only draw back I see is that there may be consumers who are leery of letting you swipe their card through your phone. I haven’t actually come across this, but I’d be prepared to address any concerns buyers have. Visit PayPal to learn more about PayPal Here

WAHS Hall of Shame – Scam Alert

Looks like reshipping scams are on the rise again. In this scam, you’re “hired” to accept packages, rewrap them, and ship them off usually overseas. This scam is bad not just because it helps people get stuff using a stolen credit card, but it could actually land you in jail because you’re accepting stolen goods and the U.S. Postal Service is being used for theft. Remember to use common sense when checking out jobs. If you think about it, there is no good reason that packages would need to be re-wrapped to be shipped to their ultimate destination. 1. Target the right people. Who are the most probable people to buy your products or services? While many business owners think the whole world can benefit from what they have to sell, the reality is that you can’t sell to the whole world and generic one-size fits all marketing is ineffective. If your products or services fit an big audience, break that audience down into subgroups. For example, many people want to work at home, but for different reasons. Marketing to moms who want to stay home is very different than marketing to baby boomers worried about retirement income. So define your market(s).

2. Find your market. There’s a reason beer commercials aren’t shown during Oprah and why there’s tons of them during football. While beer drinkers and men may watch Oprah, the demographics overwhelmingly indicate that beer manufacturers should focus on putting their ads on male oriented programming. You want to do the same thing with your market. Find out where they are the most concentrated so you can focus your marketing efforts in those areas.

3. Write offers that appeal to the market. This goes back to the difference between moms and baby boomers when it comes to working at home. When I target moms my offers talk about being a mom and wanting to raise the kids. These are messages that mean something to moms, but wouldn’t do anything for a baby boomer. On the other hand, my marketing to baby boomers would talk about retirement concerns. You want to do the same for your market. What are its concerns? What language does it use?

4. Get lead information. Whenever possible (especially if marketing online), get contact information from potential customers. It is very rare that a customer will buy on the first visit to your “store”. Once they leave, they’re gone. But if you can entice them to give a name and email, now you have a prospect. You have a way to keep in touch, show them what kind of person you are and business you run. You can give them special offers, share tips, etc. It provides an opportunity to build a relationship so that your prospects will feel comfortable buying from you. To encourage people to give information, offer something helpful in return. It  could be a free report, short consult, entry for a prize, etc.

5. Engage your network. A person is more likely to buy if they know you OR know someone who knows you. Join groups (online and off) that your target market belongs to. Use the opportunity to provide support or information and the customers will come. Don’t simply join groups to tout your business as that’s annoying.

6. Ask for referrals. Whenever I need a service, I ask someone I know and respect who she uses. And almost always I’ll work with the person referred to me. Why? Because businesses that have others talking about them and referring them must be pretty good. People are more likely to buy if someone referred them. So whenever you work with someone, ask if they know anyone else who could benefit from your product or service.
