James 1:5 “personal development and training”

I have this saying that I love to use during my training events, it makes those in attendance think a little harder and contemplate… it goes like this:

“You never know what you don’t know until you know you don’t know it!”

The road to “understanding” and “wisdom” in my experience, comes through a desire to learn driven by a need.

Sometimes that need isn’t a material one but just a burning desire to be better. A great example of that was King Solomon when he was asked by God, what He can do for him…Solomon could have asked for anything, but he asked for the one thing he knew he needed more than anything… “Wisdom”.

I am so glad that the bible says in James 1:5 “if any of you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking!”

While we may not be given the same measure as Solomon, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirt who guides and protects us.

So what does this have to do with my quote and personal development?

Simple, Solomon, knew he was going to need a whole lot more than what he had to be able to rule the people. This is the same for you, especially if you want more than you have right now.

So have more, you need to know different things than you know now, but the big question is… “What do you need to know?”

Fortunately we can learn some theory from books and training etc, but it is only head knowledge until it is applied and then developed under pressure. It is at this point that we start to realise the extra things we need to know, things we didn’t know we needed to know because we had not been under the pressure that shows us what we need.

It is at this time that many people think they can’t do what they need to do, they feel as though they will never have what it takes, they forget that they have already accomplished great things, and have proven they have the potential to learn, grow and develop.

So if there is one thing to take away from this… Do what James said in James 1: 2 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,a whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. “

You see it is your perseverance that helps you continue when you don’t want to.

You are meant to go through the tough times, you are meant to feel week, because when you (and I) feel weak, God is able to show His strength in us.

These things make you better, they make you the person you are supposed to be.

His Word is life, allow His Word to work through you, to show you the things you don’t know yet, so you can become better, bigger and more of His servant.

You are fearfully and wonderfully made, so let’s have some fun and get some things done.

What does God say about opportunity?

Before we start, this revelation is for me and my life, I am sharing it with you in the hope that you may also see breakthrough in any area that you feel as though God is speaking to you on.

Have you ever thought what does God say about opportunity? Do you spend much time thinking how much better things would be if you had more money, more time or more freedom? Well these things only come from opportunity, so if it is ok with you, I am going to speak from a place of a Christian business owner, I want to speak from the truth I have found in serving God and having some successes and some failures and some more successes lol.

But before we go too deep into what I believe God says about opportunity, I want you to know this one thing.

God through His Son Jesus Christ wants to have a relationship with you, and the wonderful thing about this relationship that you can have with Him is that He will speak to you and guide you if you are willing to listen to Him, the problem is, not many people are prepared to enter that place where God can speak to them and encourage, direct and guide them.

So when you read this article and watch the video, please take the time to speak to Him and ask Him for His will surrounding certain things, but don’t just wait, ACT remember faith without works is dead, so start and if God doesn’t want you doing something He will show you.

So today let’s look at what does God say about opportunity.

Yesterday on our facebook page http://fb.com/jameshannanpage I said that today i was going to write an article on a scripture that had been really speaking very loudly to me and I believe that there will be a lot of people who read this article and will have a journey begin. A journey that will start to unlock some of the answers you have been searching for around creating a better life for you and your family.

Warning: Before we go any further, I want to give you a warning, some people may not like what I say. But remember, I am using the scriptures from the bible, so ask God how does this apply to you, and this is a revelation I had about my own life and am sharing it from that perspective. It was tough for me to hear it, so it maybe tough for some of you as well.

This is how I saw God speaking to me about what does God say about opportunity?

The scripture I want to cover today is Proverbs 19:24 and it is seems so important that God repeated it again in Proverbs 26:15

“Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouths”

I was sitting around our table on the deck talking to a friend of mine. He has been in business many years and we were talking about how God reveals business success strategies in His scriptures and then he told me about the one that really spoke to him and it was Pro 26:15.

I had read this scripture many times but never looked at it the way he was suggesting…look at this for business and opportunity!!!

I had always looked at it for people who were so lazy and slothful that all they do is lay around all day and never do any work, they live eat and sleep in the same chair and continue to get fatter and fatter and lazier and lazier. I never thought about it for me or anyone I knew… I still don’t see it for anyone I know, let me make that clear lol but I do look at things very differently, including the amount of effort I put into tasks, events and opportunities that come my way.

As we start to understand what God says about opportunity, we understand ourselves as well.

I was reading the book of Numbers this morning and found myself continually shaking my head at the Israelites as they complained about receiving Manna from heaven and not being able to eat meat etc etc. it seemed they were always complaining and wanting to go back to the horrible existence they had in Egypt rather than move on into the promised land that God had chosen for them.

If you read the story of when the 12 spy’s were sent into Canaan Numbers 14, you notice that the Israelites didn’t want to move across the Jordan to take the promised land (Canaan) because they were afraid and didn’t like the idea of the amount of work they needed to do to get the reward.

So they had to turn around and wander in the desert for 40 years until the old had passed away and a new generation was prepared to conquer.

Now think about this for your life, because this is what I had to do.

What areas are you not moving forward on and instead complaining about. At the moment within our business, we are moving into a time of unparalleled opportunity, but to receive that opportunity requires me to let go of stuff that holds me back and lazy attitudes because I would rather watch TV, play sport or do anything else except give what I needed to, to make a success of this incredible opportunity.

You see I realised that when we pray for more, more money, more time, more lifestyle etc etc etc God gives us the opportunity to receive these things. We have to work to get them though.

Working is part of our DNA, God worked, and continues to work. He works in the heart of every man woman and child. Just look at the universe and all the things in it. They are ordered and have a place, someone has to stand over them, and that is Him.

When I read that scripture from Proverbs, I think about the opportunities I have received, am I sometimes like the lazy man, He has given me the opportunity to receive all that I am asking for, but to receive the things I want, means I need to change, I need to work and it means I need to give up things that don’t benefit my dream at this time, or I need to reschedule to get things to fit it. So I get up an hour earlier and go to bed a little later.

So here are some questions for you, sorry it is not an answer to what I believe God says about opportunity.

I believe these questions will help you start moving in the right direction and see things a little differently.

When you read these questions, think about Proverbs 26: 15… “Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouths”.

Did at one time you start asking for ways to make more money, build a better lifestyle or have more time?

Did you get offers but you didn’t take them up,  for no other reason except out of fear or laziness?

Are you part of something that you know is good, but instead of doing everything you know you need to do to get the results you want, you find other things to do or cast blame?

Have you got an opportunity but you are not lifting your hands to go to work, so the opportunity is dying?

Have you been following me for a long time waiting for the right time, but the right never comes?

I ask that you learn from my revelation.

What does God think about opportunity? He LOVES it. He created it, He wants you to go after it, He will show you the right one with the right people and the right product. If it all lines up and you are not receiving any checks from the Holy Spirit, then go for it.

Remember, the thief (the devil) comes to steal kill and destroy, but Jesus comes to give you life and life in abundance.

One of the saddest things I hear from people is that they have been hurt or disillusioned by circumstances that have surrounded their life, and because of their pain, they can not make a decision to do anything that will improve their future, no matter how good the opportunity is or what it could mean, because their hurt and pain rule their lives.

I had a wonderful discussion with one of my daughters recently, she had said the one thing that I believe we have all said at one point in our lives “She makes me so angry!” (she was talking about her sister lol)

So we had the opportunity to sit down and discuss what that actually meant.

She told me all the things that had happened and had decided that because of this, she was going to be mad and angry.

I told her that my role as a dad is to raise her to be an adult that can take on lives challenges and do the things she will need to do to have success in her life with what ever she chooses to do and I needed to help her understand something… “No one can make you angry, it is a choice. You can choose to be angry, just like you can choose to be hurt emotionally and this also means you can choose to be happy and positive…”

Obviously our conversation went on a little while after this, however the point I want you to understand is that no one can hurt you unless you give them permission to do so and it is the same with your future.

Your future does not have to be bad, it can be the most amazing and wonderful future you could possibly have, if you choose it to be.

However one of the problems people face is getting over their hurts, I know some cut very deep but others are just paper cuts and it is time to let them go and move forward.

For some people it is like they can not move forward in a straight line because they keep looking at their past. Think about it this way, can you drive straight if you are always looking into the rear view mirror? Please don’t try it out, it will end in catastrophy.

Unfortunately this is what many people do. Instead of looking ahead with joy in their hearts and a sense of adventure in their spirits, all the possibilities of good are over shadowed by the hurt and pain of yesterday, and for some people it is from over 20 years ago and even for others it is because they saw other people get hurt, so they believe they will have the same outcome, even though they are not that person and did not experience what that person experienced.

You have to ask yourself a few of questions:

1. Are you going to continually live in the past looking into the rear view mirror and not looking at the opportunities coming your way?
2. Will you live your life based on other peoples experiences?
3. Are you going to allow the King to give you the gifts and future He has for you?

You see I believe you truly want to stop looking behind and want with all your heart to look forward. I believe that deep inside of you waiting to come out is a person who wants to lead an unrelenting life that chases after the dreams and purposes in their heart.

The King (Jesus) came to give you life and life in abundance, however to have that life, we need to walk the way He has asked us to walk, and that is a walk of faith.

Many people get the walk of faith confused. They think they just have to pray and wait and everything will be ok, they forget the scripture that “Faith without works is dead”, so obviously we need to act in faith that our prayers have been answered.

To understand this better, I personally believe that we need to speak out what it is we are believing for and then believe that God has already done and accomplished it, it is now up to us to do the work to get it.

In our business, nothing happens without work. I know many people wish they could just wake up in the morning and have all that they wanted without having to do anything, but you and I both know (well I hope you do) that this is not the case. It is like we have to prove that we can handle what it is we have prayed for.

The challenges, the struggles and the successors allow us to grow and become the person God wants us to be, wants YOU to be. They are not to be forgotten, they are to be learned from so that you can change and develop. It is those things that allow you to become stronger, more confident but at the same time more reliant upon the One who rules.

Remember “if He is for you, who can be against you!”

Now is a wonderful time for you to stop looking into the rearview mirror and start looking forward. Now is your time in history, there is no one like you, no one else can impact the lives that you can impact or be you. You were created for a purpose, don’t allow the hurt and frustration and fear stop you from going after the opportunities being laid out before you today.

Let go of yesterday, let go of sin, let go of hurt and allow God to rule in every area.

Listen to that still small voice that is Him speaking to you. He is not the one saying the negatives, He is the ones saying: “go for it, your more than an overcomer, I am with you, trust Me, I believe in you!”

This must be the question of the ages, “What Does God Want Me To Do?”

I hope you don’t mind, but today I am really going to simplify the answer, I know people will say “It is more difficult than that James” and others will have a major aha moment, I am hoping you will be one of the latter.

Too many people think things have to be harder than they are and in my experience, the simplest answer has more often than not has been the correct answer.

But to get to the answer, I want to lay a foundation of biblical truth and then this may help you understand a bit better.

First I think we need to start with our understanding of God. God is not a confusing God. He is a loving, just and kind God. He does not change, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb 13:8) so when we are confused, the realisation is that more than likely we are not listening to God, instead we are listening to our own selfish desires, desires that conflict with His.

Many times I have wanted one thing, but known deep down in my heart, it is not the thing that my loving and kind God wants for me. Someone said to me recently “You love God” and I said “Yes I do, He is my friend”. You see the way you see God will directly impact what you “think” you are hearing from Him.

If you see Him as a harsh tyrannical leader, then you will only hear harsh things from Him. But if you have the revelation that He is your friend as well as your God, your Leader, Your King & your Father than you will see Him differently.

God is the same, He does not change, He doesn’t make mistakes, His plans are good for you Jer 29:11.

Now take all of this into consideration when you ask the question, “What does God want me to do?”

He will never want you to do something that is contrary to His word. He will ask you to do what you CAN do not what you can’t do.

Look at the gifts, the talents, the abilities and strengths that you have. This will also give you a hint into your future and the plans that God has for you.

But what about your desires and your dreams, do they play a role in your purpose for being here? Of course they do. Pro 29:18 clearly states that we need a vision for our life. It is that vision that drives us forward. There will always be a time of training and development to build the talents etc you will need to fulfil that dream. Too many times, I hear and see individuals get so caught up in the frustration and personal development that happens in their life on the journey of success. Instead of seeing it for what it is, your apprenticeship and an opportunity to grow and learn, it is seen just as tough times and maybe something they should not be doing.

While yes, I do believe we “miss God” by doing our own thing, but even in those times, I believe God is big enough to use our bad decisions and make them good if we allow Him to work within them.

God does warn us though. He does speak to us before something is about to happen by trying to give us a “course correction”. This can happen by a change in desire for the things we are supposed to be doing, or by opportunities coming our way for something new. You know if it is right, because when you go to Him and pray, and sometimes fast (yes I said, FAST … NO EATING!!! lol) you will have a sense of peace that transcends all understanding. It doesn’t make sense in the physical or the natural world, but in God it does. (Phi 4:7)

I know I have had many opportunities offered to me and in the natural they look great, but in my heart of hearts, I know I am not supposed to follow them. I am meant to stay exactly where I am and do exactly what the Lord has put in front of me to do.

This is such a funny thing to pray for, but I think at one time in our lives, I believe we have all prayed that prayer.

But in all my time as a christian, now over 20 years, I have never seen God open heaven and give me more money. Yes I have had people be generous and give me some, however this is not the norm. What I have seen over and over again though is “Opportunity to make more money”.

When we pray, we must understand that God is interested in developing us as people and to make us the people He needs us to be, we need to grow.

One of the most interesting ways I have seen Him develop people is in the area of personal finances.

Having an increase in our income or more money in our bank account is actually a gift given to us, but it is a gift that we must be able to show that we can handle, otherwise it will be taken away from us. I am not sure that God takes it away, or the world does by lack of judgement on what to do with the increase.

Many people end up receiving an increase only to use it all on worldly things that have no long-term value. Many get further and further into debt, rather than using their increase to get out of debt and the bondage that it brings.

Kasey (my wife) and I, don’t like debt at all. We believe that we all need to do whatever it takes to remove it from our lives and live in the freedom that comes from not being bound to a corporation or an individual because money is owed. Unfortunately not everyone understands this, and so they are continually living off their credit cards or borrowing money. It becomes a never-ending merry-go-round.

So if we understand that increase if a gift from God then we should also understand Luke 12: 48 – “… to he who is given much, much is expected…” When God gives to you, He is expecting you to be wise with what He has given you, and starting a business and receiving a small income is the start of that wisdom of being able to handle much. Do you spend you little bit on more alcohol or partying or do you save some of it, making sure you are putting money away for a rainy day or a plan for the future? Do you save some for marketing, or do you spend it all on that “sparkly object” you just had to have?

What about warnings for the future?

I wonder how many times God has warned you about something coming for your future and suggested to you to make a change, but because of stubbornness, closed mind or heart or just not asking Him, you have missed His voice and so have had to go through the trouble He warned you about.

I remember just before I started to really build our business, I started to see that the company I was working for was having some real trouble, I knew I had to do something, so I went into 3 days of prayer and fasting. I got on my hands and knees before God, gave up food with the full intent to hear from Him and get His direction.

What I received was not what I expected, I received a rebuke in a gently way. He said to me that He gave me the way out of the problem we were facing 3 years previously and hadn’t done a thing with it.

He had given me an opportunity…is He giving you one, this maybe why you are asking, What does God want me to do?

So I took that opportunity, stopped praying for more money and just started to thank God for the increase and people he was bringing me. and within 24 months, our lives were totally transformed. We have an international business, leaders all over the world and freedom that most people only ever dream about, but if I didn’t listen to God, things would may have been totally different.

So take a moment to ask yourself these questions that may help you understand what does God want you to do…

1. “Is God speaking to you right now about a business, an opportunity etc
2. Has something come across your path that would not normally happen?
3. Have you had a desire to work from home or yourself for a long time but never done it?

Theses are all clues that God maybe speaking to you (Can I say that God IS speaking to you?) about making a change and stepping out onto the water.

You may think your job is secure at the moment, you may believe that your comfortable or that you have enough… but what if God is saying “Hey, I am putting this in front of you now so that you can make some extra money so that when something happens, you won’t have as much pain…” you see, doing something else, like running a business from home in your part-time, does not have to be all-consuming. It is not that hard to build something that will give you an extra $1000 – $2000 per month. the thing to realise is that if your financial situation does change for the worse, then this little extra that is coming in, could be the difference between you being able to pay the bills or going bankrupt.

I know this is a hard thing to come to terms with, but it is reality.

For many people, they don’t move because of fear, but for others it is because of laziness. They can see the storm on the horizon, and instead of getting under cover, building shelter or even going to harvest, they roll over and go to sleep. (Pro 24:23 tells you what happens in those scenarios).

Let’s answer the question What does God Want Me To Do?

He wants you to prosper and be in good health just like your soul prospers… (3 John 1:2)

He doesn’t want you sitting still, becoming fat on yesterdays activity. He wants you moving in Him, listening to His beautiful voice and becoming better.

He wants to open heavens door for you.

Being in fear, complacency or laziness does not serve God or you. However walking in faith, joy and having a hope for the future brings joy to His heart.
