<p>Six days into the New Year and I&#8217;m hearing that many people&#8217;s fitness resolutions are already broken.  I&#8217;ve been there.</p>
<p>Resolutions are easy to break.  At least they are if you made them the way I used to make them.   I would have some vague idea in my mind about what they were.  For years my fitness resolutions were always the same.  I wanted to get in better shape.  There.  That was my goal.  Get in better shape.  This year I would get in better shape.</p>
<p>I never wrote these so called resolutions down.  It&#8217;s easy to understand why.  In truth, I wasn&#8217;t committed.  That&#8217;s why my resolutions were so vague.  &#8220;Get in better shape&#8221;.  What does that mean anyway?</p>
<p>Hey for some people, this is enough.  They don&#8217;t need any extra commitment or motivation.  For me though, it meant nothing.   Actually, it meant I wasn&#8217;t committed.  It was purposely just a vague statement in my mind.  I wouldn&#8217;t even write it down because I wanted an easy way out if it didn&#8217;t miraculously happen.</p>
<p>So what does work?</p>
<p>A plan.  A solid step-by-step plan backed up by a commitment.</p>
<p>In a previous post I talked about <a title="Here is Plan B" href="http://workoutanywhere.wordpress.com/2009/12/29/how-strong-is-your-commitment-to-work-out-here-is-plan-b/">Plan B</a>, or what to do if something gets in the way of Plan A.  I may have gotten a little ahead of myself.  I should have discussed Plan A first.</p>
<p>Many fitness experts recommend setting up a weight loss goal and coming up with a plan to achieve this.</p>
<p>Weight loss goals don&#8217;t work for everybody.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s something a little bit different.  Try a workout goal.</p>
<p>Plan A would go something like this:</p>

Run/walk for 30 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday or add an alternate weekend day.</p>
<p>Commit to this Plan A for 6 weeks.  Write it down.</p>
<p>On week 5, begin making plans for the next 6 weeks.  Change it up a little by increasing intensity, time or number of reps.  Or change it up a lot.</p>
<p>Try it.  No.  Commit to it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>I applaud anyone who takes the time out of their busy schedule to get some exercise.  Sometimes its not easy.  Real life gets in the way.  Family, friends, jobs other commitments.</p>
<p>Even if you have the best intentions, sometimes they get derailed.  You get an important phone call just as you are about to run to the gym.  Or, you get to the gym only to realize that you forgot to pack your workout clothes (I&#8217;ve done this).</p>
<p>If you are committed to working out, situations like this can really get you down.  It&#8217;s depressing.  And can be quite stressful when you miss a workout.</p>
<p>In fact, especially when you&#8217;ve just started a workout program, situations like this can be the reason that many people simply give up.  They quit.  When you know that you have to exercise and you miss a workout, it can be devastating.  If you miss two in a row, that&#8217;s it.  More than likely its over.  Psychologically its hard to come back from that.</p>
<p>Here is what you have to do.</p>
<p>First of all, if you are making a New Year&#8217;s resolution to exercise this coming year, more than likely you&#8217;ve made these resolutions before.  Do something different this year.  Don&#8217;t call it a resolution.  Call it a commitment.  A master plan.  A commitment to get yourself in the best shape of your life.</p>
<p>If your plan is to go to the gym three times a week.  Then go for it.  Commit to not letting anything get in your way.  But realize that at some point, something will keep you from getting to the gym on your designated workout day.</p>
<p>But this time, be ready for it.</p>
<p>Have a backup plan.</p>
<p>This is so important.  Don&#8217;t wait until it happens to you.  Have a plan that you can implement immediately.  Write it down and call it Plan B.  It doesn&#8217;t have to be elaborate.  But it has to be something you can do in an emergency when you can&#8217;t get to your Plan A workout.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t something you should have to think about.  Implement Plan B immediately.  Just 20 to 30 minutes.</p>
<p>Go outside and run if you can.  Grab a jump rope if you have one.  If you have a kettlebell do some swings and snatches.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Well we&#8217;ve almost made it through December.  The stress of the holidays should be easing up a bit.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve managed to keep up with your exercise and nutrition program you are well ahead of the game.  If not, that&#8217;s ok.  You&#8217;re probably too hard on yourself anyway.  What you shouldn&#8217;t do is get too stressed out about it.</p>
<p>Have you noticed how more people seem to get sick during the holidays?  One possible explanation for this is that people are so stressed out during this time.  Spending money is stressful to most of us.  Family commitments can also add to stress during the holidays.  Our nutrition isn&#8217;t at its best during this time either so our immune system is working overtime to keep us from falling victim to the latest virus going around.</p>
<p>So what you shouldn&#8217;t do is add the burden of feeling guilty about your lack of activity and poor nutrition to the mix.</p>
<p>And what you can do right now is make a plan.  You don&#8217;t have to call it a resolution.  Just call it a plan.</p>

<p>Decembers are always busy.  The holidays put both a mental and physical strain on people.</p>
<p>Even if you have the best intentions, there&#8217;s a good chance that you will not be able to maintain your workout schedule or stick to your nutrition plan.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s ok.  It really is.  Don&#8217;t let it get you down.</p>
<p>If you miss a workout because you have to attend a holiday party, don&#8217;t worry about it.   Being around family and friends is more important.</p>
<p>If someone hands you a plate of delicious <a title="Delicious Tamales" href="http://www.delicioustamales.com">tamales</a> (a tradition here in San Antonio and south Texas), please make sure you sit and enjoy them and banish any guilty thoughts about screwing up your diet.  These calories don&#8217;t count.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s what you have to do.</p>

<p>I said I wouldn&#8217;t get caught up in the &#8220;who is the latest celebrity working out with the TRX Suspension Trainer&#8221;.</p>
<p>But we have talked about <a title="Jennifer Lopez Workout" href="http://bit.ly/zq0P4">Jennifer Lopez</a> who works out with the TRX under the direction of super trainer Gunnar Peterson and we recently found out that the beautiful and super talented <a title="Mary J Blige TRX Workout" href="http://workoutanywhere.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/mary-j-blige-workout-on-the-trx-suspension-trainer/">Mary J Blige also uses the TRX workout</a> with Beverly Hills trainer Greg Miele.</p>
<p>So it was recently pointed out to me by Fitness Anywhere on Facebook that the <a title="TRX Suspension Trainer" href="http://bit.ly/1RrTWE">TRX Suspension Trainer</a> was recently seen on an episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve never heard of this show, but doing some research I found out that The Real Housewives of Orange County is of course a reality show on the Bravo network.  The series follows the lavish lifestyles of several Orange County &#8220;housewives&#8221; and their families.  (Seriously, why am I writing about this?)  Apparently this series has already spun off The Real Housewives of New Jersey (I kid you not) and The Real Housewives of Atlanta and coming soon to your HDTV The Real Housewives of Washington DC.</p>
<p>Ok, so back to the TRX.  The Season 5 premiere episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County shows &#8220;housewives&#8221; Tamra Barney and Lynne Curtin going for a morning workout at the Renaissance ClubSport (that&#8217;s right, no space between Club and Sport) hotel and fitness club.  Check out this gym.. I mean ClubSport.</p>
<p>The video shows Tamra and Lynne working out with a personal trainer.  When asked to do a <a title="TRX Atomic Pushup Challenge" href="http://bit.ly/3c4eIX">TRX Atomic Pushup</a>, the best line from this segment has Lynne commenting, &#8220;Oh hell no, that ain&#8217;t gonna happen.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s because of shows like this that I don&#8217;t watch a lot of television.  I&#8217;m not going to post the video here, but if you want you can check it out on Hulu.com.  Fast forward to 23:10.  Don&#8217;t watch the whole episode.</p>

<p>Most of us don&#8217;t make a living playing professional sports.  I mean we want to work out and be in great shape like pro athletes.</p>
<p>But we don&#8217;t have to be.  Our next paycheck doesn&#8217;t depend on making a touchdown pass or out-jumping the other guy for a rebound or finishing in the top 10  at a major triathlon.</p>
<p>But we do have one thing in common with the pro athlete.  24 hours in a day.  A pro athlete has to have a workout program that is effective.  A workout program that will keep him/her at optimum condition and injury free.  This conditioning workout has to be efficient.  No wasted time.  A pro athlete has to train for the sport.</p>
