I quit my high paying job because my boss was an a-hole and quite possibly bipolar. One day I can do no wrong and the next he’s nitpicking and attacking me about tiny little things. Well, I got tired of his Jeckyl and Hyde act and turned in my notice. Best thing I ever did.

I work for a bunch of women. There’s never a good day. Especially when they all gang up on you or you can hear them talking about you and others in cubicles. The women are never at fault. You ask for direction and follow it, but get yelled at when following the incorrect advise. It’s all favoritism. If you work hard, you’re considered a trouble maker. If you have the I don’t care attitude, you’re promoted. They say life isn’t fair, but this is ridiculous.

I have worked for my company for 6 years, even going through a change of hands. I have seen people come and go, and policies change. I know what it takes to run each department on a day to day basis. Since the latest ‘take-over’, I have seen significant money wasted on hiring management, meanwhile skimping on the actual help. I have seen communication go down the tubes, employees become overworked and disgruntled, and disorganized. I am a fighter. I know what it takes to do the job, and I know what it takes for management to do the job and I question the…um, work ethic of the current management. In other words, if everyone were to quit, the place is screwed. So I argue, and I try to get my point across…but no one listens. Nothing changes and I’m left with responses that leave me thinking…really? Yeah, right. Oh, there is no money for hiring an extra person part time. No, that department can’t handle that request. Schedules are not flexible, and no you can’t have any ben efits, and btw, close the door on your way out so no one can see me looking for a different job on Craigslist instead of working. Sigh.

So, I was getting ready to go on vacation and had a deadline approaching.  Because of this, I was trying to help get a coworker up to speed on some things that I was handling.  We needed to decide whether to buy one of several different video encoders for a project that we were on.  I had narrowed it down to three, but without getting them in-house, it would be impossible to determine which to go with.  These were cheap devices, less than $250 each.

I decided to go out and pick up all three to try them out.  That way, it would not be any roadblock while I was out.  I enlisted the help of my coworker so that he would be in the know on the decision making process and be able to cover for me while I was out, should he need to.

It went really well, we decided on the device and I returned the other two.  We did this during lunch — it took no longer than about an hour.  Well, it turns out that my boss’ boss had a big problem with this.  I have no idea why, but my boss came and told me that she was upset.  One of his peers pulled me aside and said the same thing.  She talked to me herself and mentioned some things about restocking fees, sales tax, and wasting time and on and on.

I spoke up for myself.  I asked her if she was crazy – I just saved the company a lot of time and solved a problem — at no cost to the company.  If she was upset about restocking, well there was no restocking fee on the return.  Sales tax?  I’ll pay the $10, if it was that big of a deal.  At the end of the day, here’s a person that is so caught up in it all that she can’t realize that engineers can solve problems – even business problems. I couldn’t wait for these guys to bring me a proper device, so I went and cleared that roadblock. And at the end of the day, she spent so much time and money worrying about it, that she was the one costing the company money. I said it in a nice way, of course.

I just can’t believe it. Here I am doing something proactive and I get slammed for it. So lame.

I’m working at one of hottest companies around, and coworkers, including boss are all awesome. The thing is, I’m working on a project for over a year now that I hate from the depths of my soul. The bigger problem is, I’m the only one capable of finishing it. Sometimes, I won’t work for whole day, and I’m missing deadlines for months. I have been successful on other projects, but I lost much reputation because of this one and I have a feeling that once this project is finished I’ll lose my job instantly. I’m fighting with it everyday and I constantly have feeling one day both I and this project will fall apart.

So there was an all hands meeting yesterday. Well, almost all hands. Me and some of the newer folks were not invited. A buddy of mine pulled me into the meeting. Now I know why I wasn’t invited. They went through the new org chart and the folks that weren’t invited were not on the org chart.

Could have probably done that differently, I think. Now, they’ve got a handful of us that know we aren’t going to be here soon, yet we are still showing up wondering if today is going to be the day we all lose our jobs.

I work for a consulting company and the firm that I’m consulting to has approved unlimited overtime. Problem is I’m pretty much done after about 30 hours. The consulting company wants me to put in 45+ hours a week. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m on schedule. I don’t get any more of that money. In fact, last week, I cut out after 36 hours, and my company went nuts! So, today, I’m just clock watching. Everyone is already gone, but I’m sitting here so that I can bill an extra hour. How lame.
