The Pain of Death of A Loved One and How You Can Benefit From It

The room is silent and still. You can only hear the silent beep of the machine. Doctors and nurses pump so a thin lady would still live. The lady on the hospital bed gasps for air. She fights to take away the very thing that keeps her alive. Every bit of her body feels pain. Her heart is torn. She can no longer bear the pain but she still wants to live as she thinks of the family and people she cares for. Then comes another doctor. She calmly tells the family that the lady’s brain has stopped its function. Despair, fear, and terrible sadness are felt by the lady’s family. Another soul is now home with the Lord.

Each person would eventually face death. No one can escape the sting of death. The death of a loved one is a universal occurrence. Each family soon realizes this one way or another. No one wants to experience it but everyone has to face it.

I never thought of the day where I would have to face the reality that I will lose my beloved Mother. She has fought the battle and I believed she fought it well. I never thought I would lose my 62-year old Mom.

It has been three months since I said goodbye to her earthly remains. Everyone has his or her way of coping but the pain still lingers. Even with the pain of her death, I personally have learned ways where we can benefit from the pain of death of a loved one.

The pain of death of a loved one makes us value our loved ones more.

People cry for their loved ones for many reasons. One reason is that the dead shall no longer be in their presence. However, those who are left behind cry because of regret. Regret that we have not shown how we really value our loved ones.

We may have told our loved ones “I love you.” However, there are instances when they do not feel loved. We should learn how to love them the way they want to be loved. This makes us rethink that we should exert more effort in showing how we value them and love them more.

The pain of death of a loved one makes us value time.

Charles Darwin said, “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” People have the tendency to waste time. We tend to promise ourselves to do a thing-to-do at a later time and then perform some not-so-significant act.

The pain of death of a loved one motivates us to reach our fullest potential.

There are two types of motivation. Motivation could either be extrinsic or intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is motivation that happens because we either want a reward or avoid punishment. Intrinsic motivation is motivation that happens because it is personally rewarding and we enjoy it. The death of a loved one motivates us intrinsically because we want to reach our potential because we do it in their memory. Our fire and our desire to be the best we can be can be the result of experiencing the pain of death of a loved one.

The pain of death of a loved one makes us grateful for Heaven.

The average lifespan of a person according to the Bible is 70 years. What is seventy years compared to a life of eternity in Heaven? Heaven makes us grateful that even if we feel pain, we have an eternity to look forward to in the presence of people we loved the most.

We may walk the valley of the shadow of death. We may feel pain when we lose the ones we love. However, we can still be grateful we will have an eternity with the ones that we love.

8 Basic Skills Teachers Need to Learn to Get Ahead

People from all walks of life want to succeed. Success has even become a business with all the self-help books and coaching programs that have sprouted in the online world.

Teachers are at the forefront of educating the future leaders. Thus, they need to be the models on how to become successful.

For first time readers of my blog, I would like to share that I teach in a public school and I have observed 8 basic skills in our department heads that you can learn in order to get ahead.

Here are eight of them:

1. Balanced Lalice. Time Management.

"One always has time enough, if one will apply it well." This quote is by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. All teachers have the same 24 hours in a day. No one has an excess or less of an hour every day. Time is the most important asset you have. If you can manage your time management skills, you and your group will have higher productivity, better decision-making, and better quality work.

I think Lalice Joy Arquintillo, Filipino Department Head, gets to have this as she can balance her life as a loving mom and wife, a good leader for her department, a spiritual person, and a good listening buddy to her people by having proper time management skills.

2. Passionate Herma. Wide reader.

“Read in order to live.” This quote is by Gustave Flaubert. Teachers should be wide readers. We should not only focus on the subject we teach but we should have a passion for reading. Learning should never stop. I have seen her read good books that are normally read by teachers.

3. Entrepreneurial Nic. Money Skills.

“An entrepreneur assumes the risk and is dedicated and committed to the success of whatever he or she undertakes.” This quote is by Victor Kiam. Teachers are known to be conservative when it comes to planning for their money. Teachers with their meager income with large expenses should undertake business ventures.

4.Fun-loving Sheila. Ability to laugh at yourself.

"If you can't laugh at yourself, life's gonna seem a whole lot longer than you like." This movie quote from Garden State speaks abou having the ability to laugh at yourself.

Teachers are put into a lot of pressure. Being able to put fun while working is a great asset to any teacher. It makes the load seem lighter.

5. Cooperative Reynaldo. Interpersonal Skills.

"You don't win with the best talent - you win with the five players who are able to play well together." This anonymous quote I think best describes having interpersonal skills in order to succeed. Being a team player in any organization is a must in order to succeed.

Reynaldo Octavio is the Head of the Technology and Livelihood Education Department.

6. Humble Stella Mae. The silent worker.

"A meaningful life is not being rich or popular, but being highly educated, being real and humble. And being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others." This anonymous quote can best describe this skill. There are many who have accomplished much in the workplace but keep this for themselves. They conscientiously work on their task.

7. Go-getter Pete. Ability to delegate tasks.

"Delegating means letting others become the experts and hence the best." This quote by Timothy Firnstahl shows that delegating tasks is a skill in order to succeed in life. I saw Pete Palomar, Head of the Araling Panlipunan Department, start as a Supremet Student Government Adviser delegate tasks and guiding student leaders into achieving results.

8. Selfless Delia. Ability to help others.

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” This quote by Charles Dickens shows that anyone can be usefulin this world as long as we help by lightening the burden of other people.

Delia Levalib, HEad of the MAPEH Department, assists people in any possible way that she can. Despite her physical constraints, she assists many teachers from our school especially when it comes to checking of forms.

Being successful can be as easy if we follow these 8 basic skills that I learned from our Department Heads.

THE VALUE OF TIME

“Time is precious, Waste it wisely.”

This quotation by Mr. Anonymous has got my attention as I was surfing the net.

Recently, I attended a Big Event by Alliance in Motion Global and one of the things that stuck to my mind was the short message by John Asperin, Chief Marketing Officer about Time. Here is a summary of what he said:

1. Time is Treasure. Sir John said that people could either Pay Now Play Later or Play Now Pay Later. It is a person’s choice whether he wants to enjoy now and suffer later or vice-versa. The time spent on the choices we make counts on the results of tomorrow. Thus, time is treasure.

2. Time is Investment. Time lost can never be regained. The things we do currently in the present time will affect what we will have in the future. If we want to be a basketball player, then we have to invest time learning basketball and not baseball. If we want to be rich, we have to spend time building relationships with people who have been on the journey towards financial freedom and we should not waste time spending it with people who do not have a vision for success.

3. Time should be Multiplied. He said that in order to be successful, a person should multiply time. Time can be multiplied by doing leverage. Leverage is maximizing income through the efforts of other people. By having a network, a person can multiply his time. The great thing about leverage is that people work together.

4. Time is Experience. Experience is relative with time. A person who is driving a car for the first time does it differently with a person who is already a professional driver.

What struck my heart and mind was this: “ Are you willing to continue to spend time on success-bearing activities?”

My answer is Yes.

What about you? Are you willing to do what it takes to reach success? Time is running out. Do what it takes to use time wisely. Waste it wisely 

THE FIVE FINGERS OF LEADERSHIP

We see and meet leaders in our daily lives. We work with them at our workplace. We listen to them during classes. We dine with them in our homes. We hear their sermons on Sundays. However, sad to say, not all leaders are effective when it comes to leading their flocks. Some followers become disenchanted that their lives somehow fall apart when leaders commit mistakes.

Last week, I was blessed to attend a special training with a great leader. He is a minister of a religious organization as well as life coach in one of the largest companies in the Philippines that is expanding worldwide. He is Pastor John Fortune Gay.

They say people listen to you when they know you practice what you preach. You do what you say. You commit to what you affirm. That is leadership in practice.

He spoke for an hour but what I learned was like ten modules combined in one. Pastor John Gay talked about the fingers of leadership. Here is what I learned:

1. The Thumb (Strength of Character). The thumb is probably the most important finger. Lots of things cannot be done without it. Pastor John Gay said that it symbolizes strength of character. A person who is a leader should have integrity and the character to do what he plans to do. He practices what he preaches or teaches. A good leader should have a great attitude.

2. The Pointing Finger (Direction). A leader should know where he is headed. He must have direction. He knows his goals. He knows where his group is headed.

3. The Middle Finger (Spirit of Excellence). Since a leader is a person of influence, he must exhibit excellence in what he does. He should be excellent in his work, at home, and even with his own character.

4. The Ring Finger (Relationships). A leader should have good relationships with the people he deals with in his life. I remember his story about a teacher who gave an exam to his students. One of the questions was about the name of the utility worker cleaning the comfort room. The person telling the story then was ashamed that he did not get to know the name of the person concerned. The teacher was telling them that everyone is important. Relationships are important.

5. The Little Finger (Small Things). People think that successful leaders become great leaders in one blink of an eye. However, they become great because of the small things they do everyday. A person who does well in small things do great when given responsibility with large things.

If you are an aspiring leader or is leading a flock or group of people who look up to you, these five fingers of leadership are great guides in honing ourselves to become a very good leader if not the best one.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF WORKING ON A HOME-BASED BUSINESS WHILE WORKING ON A FULL-TIME JOB

1. Thou shalt not combine one with the other for each endeavour is a jealous one.

You cannot intermingle business interests with your full-time job. Your boss will notice and keep an unreasonable eye on you and find fault on your daily actions. I remember a story about my friend who was into freelance writing and her boss kept on checking on her once in a while thinking she (friend) has left her guard down.

2. Thou shalt not “worship” one or the other.

Many who transition from a full-time job “worship” their home-based business and forget they still have duties and responsibilities with their current jobs. Pamela, a high school teacher, tend to forget about her classes while working on her business. This hurts her reputation as a worker.

3. Thou shalt not begrudge all the negativity of the full-time job.

People are never attracted to negative individuals. Even if your job sucks, it is never right to publicly announce how work makes you feel drained with all the negativity. Your positive attitude can be the tool in attracting others with your business.

4. Remember Family Day.

Working on a full-time job and a home-based business can take its toll on a person. However, getting busy with either should never take away your time with your family.

There was this story of a child who had a very busy father. One day, he asked as to how much is his day’s salary. The father told his child as to why he is very interested. The kid said he wants to buy his father’s time. Sad but true. Dads, moms, and even adult children do not spend quality time with their family anymore because they are so engrossed with work and business.

5. Honour thy boss.

In this world filled with people with imperfect traits, we can never have perfect workplaces. It is very possible that an employee finds himself a better “boss” compared to his boss at work. However, the golden rule is still to do unto others what you want others to do unto you.

6. Thou shalt not end relationships because of poor money decisions.

Often times, money gets in the way of relationships. This especially holds true when business ventures are done with co-workers. Always remember that people are important. Never risk when the collateral is your friendship or relationship with the other.

7. Thou shalt not be disloyal.

You can show loyalty with your work and with your business. Give what is due to your work and give what is due to your business. That is loyalty.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

Time is a very precious commodity. Do not steal working hours with your business and vice-versa. Do time management wisely. Do not steal the time of one and use that with the other.

9. Thou shalt not engage with negative people.

Being around negative people drains the energy of even the most positive person. Working on a full-time job with negative people can release negative ions that can be absorbed by positive people. Being surrounded by negative people at work can affect your performance with your home-based business as well.

10. Thou shalt not covet.

The motivation with doing a home-based business while working on a full-time job is dependent on each person. However, keeping up with the Joneses should never be the reason why you engage in both. Be happy with the success of others.

4 MONEY MISTAKES THAT YOU DON’T KNOW YOU’RE DOING

We all make mistakes when it comes to handling money matters. Managing money is an important factor in life. However, too many Filipinos are making mistakes that hinder them from taking control of their finances.

Peso Mistake #1: Filipinos do not have clear financial goals.

Filipinos have this general idea of desiring their dream house and dream car. However, most Pinoys do not have an idea on what they really want and on how to get there.

Pinoys spend their money on shoes and clothes and some Starbucks. Although these are needed (I doubt with the Starbucks part), they do not realize that their money goes to these items and not to their dream house or dream car. Buying more cappuccino is less likely to be found in their financial goals, but this is where most Pinoys spend their money on the little things.

If you know what you want, you will shift all of your resources towards that mark.

Peso Mistake #2: Filipinos avoid finances.

Pinoys tend not to look at their statement bills or even look at their bank account. Pinoys avoid discussing money with their parents, with their partners, because they do not want to create guilt or conflict, or discussion makes them too anxious.

It is recommended that this issue should be resolved rather than just put away. It is more stressful to avoid the problem rather than face the problem.

Peso Mistake #3: Filipinos do not know how much they are spending.

During my elementary days, I had this classmate named Ria Mae Corda, who at the mere age of 8 years, already knows how to take note of her finances. She had this small notebook and she uses this to record ALL of her spending for the day.

Imagine a small child knowing how to manage her finances yet most adults do not even know where their money goes to. Pinoys know the big bills like rent or electricity bill, however, they do not know where their money goes on the smaller stuff like new clothes or groceries.

Walkington, a Canadian money coach, recommends keeping record of everything for a few months to know where the money goes. She advises to make a limit to each expense and not to spend beyond it.

Peso Mistake #4. Filipinos depend on credit.

Suze Orman, a Pinoy financial coach, said that credit card debt is “financial sin.” She gives advice that before saving money, before investing, the number one goal is on how to pay off the credit card debt. Pinoys will be in greater problem at the 36% interest.

These are four common money mistakes that you do not know you’re doing. You should start creating and defining your financial goal. Even if you think that your financial outlook does not look so bright, you still can manage your money.

Create your goal, be motivated by it, manage your finances, and then your financial future will look brighter.

When I realized my income would not make my family survive when I reach the age of 50.

I'm enjoying much of my time for my wife and kids now. More time to focus on developing assets.

Before getting rich was not in my system all I aspire was getting things just for the daily needs in life and a little of everything, my belief was more money is for the rich and I did not see myself as rich. But when I was 4th grade I was able to help my mother earn a third to half of her salary by selling fruits in school.

Now , the drive that moves me is to secure my family and to help more people realize that life is not just work and home and never realize retirement at an early age..

How to Deal With Negative People

You might have friends or co-workers who are negative. You know that these are not the most enjoyable people to spend time. These people always find a way to pull things in a negative light. You might feel that your energy is drained just by being around these people.

So what are the ways to deal with negative people in your life?

1. Do not argue with them. You have to learn not to have an argument with negative people. A negative individual will always have many reasons to counteract what you said. You will be pulled into more negativity. If you provide constructive comments and the negative person does not show he will back down, then do away with him.

2. Show empathy. Negative people react better when they get an emphatic ear than solutions/suggestions on what should be done. You can always help them solve their problems by helping them address their emotions.

3. Help them. People who complain do that because they are crying for help. They might not know that is what they feel. You can always ask them if they are okay or if you can do anything for them.

4. Discuss light topics. You should deal with light topics as negative people are triggered with some topics.

5. Disregard the negative comments. One strategy in helping the negative individual is to disregard negative comments. Answer “I see” or “OK” when he continues with being negative. But, if he is being positive, reply in enthusiasm and affirmation. He will notice that and will adjust accordingly.

6. Affirm him with his positive traits. You can always plant seeds of positivity with the negative person if you praise him or affirm him with his good traits. This person might show resentment at first but he will good inside.

7. Be proactive. If you see a person is negative or not, it is you who sees the person as negative or not. Instead of dealing with his bad trait, focus on the goodness of the other person.

8. Avoid them. If you have done everything and they still continue being negative, then you should avoid contact with them. If he is a good friend, then you should inform him about the severity of the problem. It is not good for you to spend time with people who drain you. You should spend it with people who affect you in a positive way.

Negative people can influence people around them. Be careful when you deal with these people.

How to Keep Track of Your Goals

Being focused and persistent are the traits that separate a person who achieves his goals from a person who does not achieve his goals. There are various ways to monitor your progress towards your goals. Here are the four ways of keeping track.

1. Look at the big picture. This is the basics of monitoring your progress and reaching your goals. Most individuals do their things on a daily basis. They just live life in order to survive rather than living each day to the fullest. You have to know what motivates you in order to keep the morning started. If you think about these things then you will the end result in mind. You also have to see the long-term plan so your daily actions will be towards that goal.

2. Plan, Organize, Implement. Planning and organizing are key factors when it comes to monitoring your progress. If you already know what the big picture is, you must create a daily plan of action on how to reach that goal. Take a calendar and plan on your daily, weekly, monthly activities in order to achieve your goals. Use a planner. Create a to-do-list on a weekly basis and then segment that into daily tasks. If you are able to plan and organize your time properly, then you will not only feel good but you will also develop self-discipline.

3. Be accountable. You can find a good person, a buddy, a coach who you can share your goals with. It is crucial that you should have another person who you can talk about your progress. You are more likely to accomplish your tasks throughout the week if you have someone other than yourself who will keep you accountable.

4. Reward yourself. You should reward yourself for each accomplishment. If you always do things towards your goal and you never take time in rewarding yourself, then you will get yourself burnt out. Being burnt out means losing the motivation to stay focused on your goals. Rewarding yourself is a good way of tracking your goals since you will be able to appreciate your hard work and then move on towards another goal.

I want to share with you real-life stories of people that I got to know personally last year. With all the negativity we can watch, see, and hear on various media, it is really a breather to find stories that can motivate us to be a better person.

I have been bugging these people for so many months into having a quick "interview" on how they got to be where they are.

- Simple. Loving mom.

3. What used to be your perspective in life when it comes to becoming successful financially?

- Becoming “rich” you have to have plenty of money for you to put up a business that would eventually grow.

What is your perspective now?

- You don’t need “plenty of money” you just need plenty of ambition. Not all people who has money can be successful in MLM, but even if your resources is limited but if you couple it with ambition, you can get somewhere!

4. What was the turning point in your life that made you who you are today?

- The lack of money to provide for the needs of my family. Many times, I’ve experienced “lack” especially after my father died, I was 13.

5. What are your current successes in life?

- Freedom from lack of money, earning 250-300T/month

- Hyundai Sta. Fe 2013 which the Lord has given on our first year and 6months..

6. What motivates you to do what you do?

- My kids. The lack of money to provide for the needs of my family.

- Life is not always a bed of roses, it is not always Christmas so when you have an opportunity like AIM Global, grab it and nurture it. Train well and be prepared for lifes trials and challenges.

How to Be More Productive at Work

You do not get an award for working more hours compared than everyone else in the office. The length of time is not proportional to the quality of work. The question is how do you increase productivity? The secret is to get more things done in less hours so you can do more important things that can make you happy.

1. List down the most important things.

You cannot do everything every day. You should list the three most important things you need to do and then focus on that.

2. Start your day right.

If you start the day right, it increases the possibility of being more productive at work. If there is something that causes you a lot of stress, then you should get it over and done with ASAP. Another option is to start with the most important work. Moreover, you can also start the day with motivational thoughts. You can listen to an audio about positive thinking by Brian Tracy or John Maxwell.

3. Focus.

Writers really need this most especially. You can focus by closing the door as this signals that you are working and you do not want anyone to enter. Writers need to get their creative juices flowing before they can start working.

4. Do not multi-task.

You can get more things done if you do things one at a time.

5. Avoid distractions.

You can do this by silencing your phone. You do not have to be interrupted by the ringing or buzzing of your phone.

6. Unwind.

There are instances when you get burnt-out from working for hours. You can become more productive if you unwind and recharge your batteries.

7. Seek help.

You can get more things done efficiently if you ask for help rather than studying it more.

8. Group similar tasks together.

Different mind-sets are required for different tasks. Thus, you can always group similar tasks together. Take note that it is easier to complete a task than to start it.

9. Set time for exercise.

An unhealthy body causes lethargy to a person. It is better to have a quick exercise as this helps you carry yourself better.

10. Set your boundaries.

You should know your limits. It is nice to know that you can get more things done in less time. However, it becomes more difficult to increase your productivity any further. Thus, the quality of work should be great as that is the whole point of your work.

3 Good Reasons Why You Should Stop Complaining

The daily crush of life sometimes brings out the worst in us. We often find it easy to blame others and situations for our problems. These complaints include:

The government is making me poor.

My family does not understand me fully.

My boss is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It is true that most of the things in the world are things we cannot control; the difference among two kinds of people is their reaction towards these situations.

It is possible to change the way you react to a specific event or situation. Understanding that we should stop complaining is the key in reacting to each situation.

What are the reasons why you should stop complaining?

1. You are your own boss. Everything that happens to you is a result of decisions you have made years ago. There are some people who have influenced your decision but definitely it was you who made it. You cannot blame others for what you decided on.

You are the one who has the control. You cannot blame others but yourself.

If you change the way you think, you will see that everything around you is a blank canvas. Your dreams are within reach.

What are your goals in life? What are your dreams? Have you created a plan? You have to begin thinking on it so you can remind yourself daily that everything can be reached if you create a plan of action.

2. The world does not revolve around you. It is true that the world can exist without you. It does not revolve around you. Everything in this world is chaotic but it is up to you to find meaning and order.

If the world continues without you, then you should know that you are in charge of your life.

You will then have a realization that parents nurture and look after children. However, this does not hold true when children turn to adults. The world does not offer the same zone of comfort when you were young compared to when you become an adult.

3. You should step up and be a leader. Being a leader means leading a life that you can control. It is really easy to find others responsible for the things that happen to you. However, this shows lack of responsibility with your actions. You also tend to refuse the possibility that things in life can be changed.

Leaders have great qualities such as being courageous and being willing to face your fears, admit mistakes, experience failure, and be responsible for everything that happens to you. This can break your ego but this builds character within you.

The challenge that you have to face now is whether you are ready to change your life.

You alone can make it happen!

In this economic recession, there is a rise in freelancing. In the Philippines, there is a rise in the number of Filipinos who engage in freelance work. Why do people engage in freelancing? Freelancing is often a fulfilling work. Most people freelance by choice. Some do part-time freelancing while others do it on a full-time scale. Individuals chose fulltime freelancing because it gives them flexibility. Anyone can be freelancers. Any profession can be a freelancer.

If you plan to be a freelancer, then you should follow these steps.

1. Put yourself in the market. It would be a great idea to know everything in the freelance industry; however, it is best that you master a niche within your industry. You can exert efforts in your personal branding. You can establish your worth by starting a personal website or you can increase your social media presence.

2. Increase your contacts. A number of small as well as large businesses approach plenty of established freelancers regularly for work. There are instances when there are no gigs for the freelancer. That is the reason why you should make networking a regular task. You can do this by using the web, attending industry events, making cold calls to obtain new customers, or sent out e-newsletters.

3. Obtain a Contract. You should obtain a contract in order to have a successful freelancing career. Make sure that you write and sign and contract with your clients before you complete any work. There are many instances when freelancers get taken advantage of and end up working for free. You can be ensured that your client will pay you if you have a contract.

4. Be organized. Freelancers often work on multiple projects. You have to be organized on scheduling the length of time each project has to be completed. 1. Happy people follow the golden rule. “Do unto others what you want others to do unto you.” Happy people know how to respect others and others respect them as well.

2. Happy people find contentment. These people know that happiness is finding contentment with the current things that they have. But, this does not mean that they do not envision better things. Unhappy people are not content. They waste time talking about things they do not have. Happy people balance time for everything that is important like family, friends, work, health, and others.

3. Happy people know to let go of petty things. Trivial things do not matter to happy people. Although bad things happen to great people sometimes, they do not let these bad events discourage them. Instead, they move on and do not let bad feelings conquer them. Unhappy people have the tendency to dwell on petty issues that can result to depression, anger, and greed.

4. Happy people go with other happy people. Birds of the same feather flock together. Happy people gravitate towards other happy people. If you feel that you have problems with depression, sadness, anger, or other negative thoughts, you should go with happy people as they can rub on to you a happiness dust.

5. Happy people know how to take charge for their actions. Happy people are aware that they are not perfect. If they mess up, they admit it. 9 Time Management Steps for Busy Executives

Busy executives always have time against them. They want to be more productive each day and time should be managed properly. Here are 10 steps on how busy executives can manage their time.

1. Plan your day right. You should start your day with a plan and an organized office. You have to review and revise your tasks daily. At the end of the day, organize your place and create your schedule for the next day.

2. Do one thing at a time. People say executives are good at multi-tasking. However, it would be best if a person does one task at a time. After doing one task, then you should focus on the next thing.

3. Arrange for an uninterrupted time of the day. You should let everyone know that you are unavailable for questions, phone calls, appointments during this time. This will be your time to catch with tasks that you do not have time for.

4. Control your inbox. You should not be servant to your emails. Delete them on a regular basis and check them only at designated time. Block a certain time interval where you will look at your emails.

5. Set a sense of urgency. When you are at work, you should try to maximize your time. However, you should be courteous when you are in business conversations. Instead of asking “How are you?” ask “How may I help you?” as this shortens the response. You can also establish how long your meeting will last.

6. Create a list of important phone numbers and post it near your phone. It takes time to find numbers on your computer. You should have the important ones at the tip of your fingers.

7. Group similar tasks. You should categorize your tasks. This will make things easier done. You can return phone calls, write personal notes, and answer emails if they are done by groups.

8. Use different boxes for varying categories of paper. You should separate items that are important and immediate. Papers that are pending, paper that are to be filed, or papers that have to be reviewed.

9. Keep your desk organized. You should keep extra pens, supplies, tape dispenser, and stapler in your drawer rather than on top of your desk. Your desk should have your current paperwork, telephone, and computer.

There are people who are born as a person-oriented individual. Janet is a natural when it comes to making a newbie feel welcome to a team. Janet is the female version of Gregor Mendel as she teaches Biology.

Richel is a great person to be friends with. If there will ever be a Survival Camp for Teachers, I will really go with her team. She is the female version of Chef Boy Logro. Richel also teaches Filipino.

Katherine “Ms Assertive”

Katherine is one of the first persons who became my team member. Despite the “incompleteness” of my presentation, she is a gem. You can rely on her. She teaches Filipino.

Veronica “Ms Kindhearted”

She is Lisa Macuja and Marie Curie combined in one. Veronica teaches Physics. She is one of the best team members a group can have. Just make sure you don’t push her over the edge.

Gemma Baydo “Ms Cooperative”

If you want a person who has a very teachable heart, Gemma is the person you can count on. She has a store that she operates and is a very business-oriented person.

This blog post is not about which race is better or which race is superior.

However, as I go on reminiscing my experiences over the years, I realized that the Chinese have an edge compared with Filipinos.

What is the difference between the Filipinos and the Chinese?

Filipinos have an employee-mindset. Chinese have an employer-mindset.

Let us consider a Filipino family.

The Filipino Father tells his children, “Son, study very well so when you grow up you will get a good job.”

The Chinese Family on the other hand has this scenario.

The Chinese Father tells his children, “Son, study very well so when you grow up you will have your own business.”

This very mindset sets the difference between a Filipino Family and a Chinese Family.

Although there are also Filipinos who are into business, the Chinese think differently even when they start.

Chinese talk about business and money at homes. Thus, they get stronger with financial education.

No wonder why the Chinese gets richer and the Filipinos get poorer.

I was dining with some of my close friends today. We were heartily eating our meal when suddenly the conversation went to having money.

It dawned on me that my friend only wanted to be content. She said something about people who was once poor and then changed when their circumstances got better. For everything she said, I thought that I was once like her.

However, I was grateful enough that I was exposed to books that taught about the difference between a poor person mindset and a rich person mindset.

Through the various seminars about changing your money-mindset by Chinkee Tan and other speakers I have known these past few months, I was able to know that there are lots of money myths. Here are some of them:

1. Money is not important. If money is not important, they why do people still work daily?

2. I don’t want to have lots of money. I am content with what I have. Being content does not mean being free from wanting better things in life. It means thanking God for blessings you have but still striving to reach a better life for you family. Having a better life means having the financial capacity to provide for their needs and wants.

3. If I will be rich, I will become a bad person. There are lots of rich people who are good. There are also lots of poor people who are not good people. Decide whether you want to become bad when you get to be rich.

How to Plan for an Early Retirement for Filipinos

Early retirement does not happen. This requires planning, commitment, and money.

1. The average lifespan of Filipinos as of February 2013 is 71 years.

2. The average Filipinos spends 10 years in retirement.

How should an average Filipino prepare for retirement?

1. Know your needs for retirement. Pinoys think that their lives would be easier when they retire. However, the cost of living increases as the years pass by. This means that what you earned when you were younger does not mean that it will be enough when you retire. The secret on how to plan for an early retirement should be to plan ahead.

2. Saving is good but it does not mean that what you save will be enough. If you save your money in the bank, this only amounts to a 0.25% annual interest rate. If you are able to save P1,000 pesos per month for 20 years, that would only be around P300,000. This means that if a Filipino retires for ten years, it would be spending P2,500 per month from savings.

3. Find out about your GSIS or SSS benefits. It would be wise to know about how your retirement benefits from these institutions would be like. However, there is bad news for people who trust their retirement with either institution. You can read about why this is so if you read thisarticle.

4. Invest. It is true that there are no plain employees who became financially stable when they retire based only on their employment. You should invest your income in various ways. You can ask any financial planning institutions on how you can diversify your income. You can start a traditional business or join a network marketing company.

I was surfing the net for valuable money management tips for Filipinos. I was in Facebook at one time and there was this Facebook page called Ready to be Rich. I soon found out that the owner of the page was Fitz Villafuerte who has a blog named after him.

I found his interesting post about an Infographic regarding the Spending Habits of Pinoys. It was interesting to note that out of a monthly budget of P20,000, Pinoys only spend 6% of their income in bank savings. Although many Pinoys know how to save, the percentage being saved is really quite low.

My thought was how about for people who do not have P20,000 as their monthly budget? How can they survive?

Child to Parent: “Why are We Poor?”

I credit this blog to Arnel Navarra’s Life Secure Program. As I was searching for interesting posts in Facebook, I got to see this picture with “Tatay, bakit tayo mahirap?” If you were the parent, these words would strike your heart.

Here are the possible things that a parent can answer to his child:

1.       I was born poor.
2.       My parents can only afford to let me finish elementary.
3.       I can barely afford giving you and your ten siblings proper food and nourishment.
4.       I only earn 100 pesos per day.
5.       The government does not help poor families like us become financially stable.
6.       I got married early so I was not prepared financially.
7.       I have to support my parents so I cannot give everything to you.
8.       I have lots of loans to pay for.
9.       And the list goes on and on…

The Three Types of Senior Citizens: What Will You Be When You Reach 65 and Above?

When you are young and alert and you seem to own the world, you never think of the day when you get to be 65.

When you are old, you regret your younger days when you could have made the right decisions in life.

Here are the three kinds of senior citizens in terms of finances:

1. The broke Senior Citizen. This kind of Senior Citizen worked hard all of his life. He manages to live his life on a daily basis by constantly asking his friends and family to lend him money. He might be a parent who depends on the charity of his children. He might have been a retired employee who was not able to use his pension plan properly. He has to depend on medical welfare for his medicines. His money cannot cope up with his daily needs such as food and medicine.

2. The working Senior Citizen. Sixty-five is the ideal retirement age. By this time, retirement should be synonymous with enjoying his lifetime benefits. However, at age 65 and beyond, he still works. He still has children to support. He still has grandchildren to take care of because his children cannot afford the daily needs of their children. What he did for the past 40 years of his life is still the same pattern that he does when he is old.

3. The financially free Senior Citizen. He has known the secrets of the rich. He has known the power of leverage. He can travel wherever he wants. He is reaping what he has invested when he was in the working age. Money is not a problem to him. He can afford not to work. He is financially stable.

If you are young, always remember that what happens to your parents and grandparents might be the same thing that will happen to you. If you were to choose among the three kinds of senior citizens, you would want to with the third kind. You do not want to be on the first or the second choices.
