I have to admit that I am not always on top of things in the blogging world. It was only recently that I revived an older blog (this one) to discuss issues related to being a wahm and affiliate marketing. It wasn’t until last year that I started to hear a buzz about the so called ‘mommy blogger.’

Now I will say that there are a couple of blogs that I follow here and there that would qualify for the title. I knew that there were bloggers that chronicled their life and that of their offspring online.

I have never done that though. I have never been comfortable sharing personal information or pictures of my family online. Unless you are in my inner circle, you probably don’t even know my husband or daughter’s name. I like things that way.

Plus my family is a bit off the beaten path. Many of the companies that are looking for reviews or endorsements of their products are simply not ones that we would use in our home. So while I am all for getting free samples of things and trying them out, I’m not really sure my home would be the right fit.

Instead I am happy with my focus here. I want to continue to bring news and advice about working at home and the affiliate marketing industry to my readers. I hope that you don’t mind that I have only invited you into my home office and not given you more access to the private details of my life and family.

Summer is here, but for most of us WAHM’s work still goes on. Today I am happy to host the All Things Family blog carnival with suggestions on how to keep your kids busy while you get work done.

My friend Char pointed out this really cool site to me the other day and I wanted to share it with you. They offer removable whiteboard decals, that you just peel and stick to a wall.

Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend TEDxLansing and I am very glad that I went. First of all, it was held at Michigan State University and I’ll use just about any excuse to revisit my second home. Plus the event just sounded very intriguing. 17 speakers given 18 minutes to give the best speech of their life, plus videos from other TED events.

I couldn’t possibly stuff everything I learned from the event into this post, but I do want to share some of the highlights. John Hill, the Director of Alumni Career Services at MSU started off. His speech was given entirely on placards, which definitely set the tone for this conference. His job is helping people connect and he wanted to show how useful Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin are for that. He is also a huge fan of the sweater vest.

Next up was Justin “Bugsy” Sailor. I thought his speech was interesting because he set out to travel across the country, staying at the homes of strangers along the way. The whole trip changed when he realized he was staying with strangers, but with friends he had not met yet. Definitely a life changing experience and one in which he had to step outside of a comfort zone.

I loved Allie Merrick’s speech. She is a speaker, poet, and singer and her presentation was a combination of all three. It was brave and powerful and was about the art of speaking. She said that silence is a rare commodity and you must raise the value of your voice in order to be heard.

Bob Fish is a bit of a hometown success story in East Lansing. He graduated from MSU and went on to found Biggby Coffee (formally Beaner’s). I love how he connects with his business by traveling around and buying people coffee. He stayed away from a powerpoint presentation and instead sat in a chair, held some index cards and spoke about various aspects of business. His was one of the best speeches that day. I got a number of gems from him:

• Choose to be profitable. A small business must be profitable, so decide profit is an expense line and pay upfront.
• Not free. Social media is not free, it is a good marketing tool though. Don’t forget to mention the name of your business. It takes time, effort, and thought.
• Risk. Entrepreneurs are often called risky, that they are gambling. Not true, they often have an idea or info that is just a little bit different.
• ROI x 10. Return on Involvement: give time, money, products and it will always come back to you tenfold.
• Be happy, make friends, find love and you will always be successful.

The author of Socialnomics, Erik Qualman also spoke. The number 1 need for humans is to belong and that is what makes social media so popular. He believes that social media is going the way of social commerce, in that you are more likely to buy something if your network of friends recommend it.

You always know that a speech has to be good when someone comes onstage carrying a firehouse to try and fill a tea cup. Karl Gude teaches information visualization for the School of Journalism at MSU. I wish that I had a paper napkin to draw a diagram of what happened, but instead I share with you this video. Equate that to the information overload that we get from the internet. We get so much bad news all the time and the brain is not wired for constant pain. He said it is okay to move on. It is important though to share information with your audience from a teapot instead of a firehouse, so target your audience instead of aiming for everyone. I also loved his message of evolving with technology, don’t be an “I don’t.”  He also stressed the importance of using illustrations, graphics, and photos to help people scan, notice, and understand your information.

Betsy Miner Swartz had an important message as well. Her speech made tears well up in my eyes, but it was important. It is no longer good enough to just sign the back of your Michigan driver’s license in order to be on the organ donation registry. You must sign up online now. There was so much more and I apologize for leaving anyone out. If there is a TEDx conference in your area I highly recommend going. It was funny, informative, and motivational. TEDxDetroit is set to take place on September 29, 2010 on Wayne State University at the Detroit Institute of Arts and I hope to be able to attend.

Tomorrow I am taking a little bit of a road trip and going to TEDxLansing. TED stands for technology, entertainment and design. The original TED event started in 1984 to bring people together and is devoted to ideas worth spreading.

TEDx events are independently organized events that use the format of the original yearly conference. The 17 speakers have 18 minutes to give the best speech of their lives. Held at the Wharton Center on the beautiful Michigan State University campus (okay so I am biased), there will be everyone from a elementary particle physicist to the author of Socialnomics speaking.

I’m really looking forward to going and hope to share my experience with you both on Twitter and here with a future post.

This is a pretty personal post, one that I don’t often make. It is also a call for help to my readers and my friends out there. This past year has been a difficult one. Last summer one of my oldest friends in the world, who is married to my other oldest & dearest friend, was diagnosed with lymphoma. This came on the heels of his mother-in-law dying from liver cancer.

I was in the hospital to just be there for them soon after the initial diagnosis. I cried for my best friend who had just lost her mom and was now faced with the prospect of losing her husband too. I hugged her tightly and told her that he was going to be fine, because a world in which my friend Mike is not in it… well that is a world with a little less laughter and fun. Plus how cruel.

Mike made it through the initial round of chemo and got his lymphoma into remission. Then came the meetings with more doctors and whether or not he should move forward with a bone marrow transplant. After much thought and consulting they decided to go forward, as it is his best chance of survival.  His first step is an autologous stem cell transplant where they use his own stem cells to replace his broken bone marrow. If that doesn’t work then he will need a donor.

I’ve always wanted to be on the registry, but I’m not exactly the best blood donor around. I’ve made nurses cry from the effort involved. So talking myself into giving up a vial or two of blood was not exactly my favorite prospect. Well it is no longer necessary to give blood in order to be tested and get on the bone marrow registry. All it takes is four simple swabs from the inside of your mouth and you can do it from the privacy of your own home.

I ordered my kit (for free) from the National Marrow Donor Program and it arrived just a few days later. It took me all of 5 minutes to do and then I popped it back in the mail. I didn’t do it with any expectation of being a match for my friend, more of a pay it forward type of thing.

Last weekend we got together for dinner and our kids played together. We chatted about old times, shared some great food, and talked about the future. Underneath it all I could see the toll it is taking on Mike as he prepares for this next step. His boys are 6 and 3. I hope that my promise to her is fulfilled and we continue to get together for many years & many more dinners. He enters the hospital next week and will be there for about 4 weeks.

One of the things that helps me immensely with any task that I do for my business is to have a system. If I can follow something step by step, then it makes the job much easier and flows much more smoothly. Plus it is a lot more likely to be completed.

Yesterday I watched a video from Michelle Macphearson that really reinforced that. She interviews her brother, gives some tips, and shows how she rides in style.

I learned about a couple of plugins for Wordpress that I have not tried yet, as well as a super easy way to generate content after doing keyword research.
