Most of the times, these services offer a way for you to get a website for free, in exchange for your website being loaded with ads that your web host provider gets paid for when they’re clicked on, or a banner ad which advertises your web host provider. Companies like the ones I’ve mentioned will offer you a way to purchase your own custom domain through their company and will offer you a hosting package for a select price, based on your website’s needs. But here’s a little secret—Lots of times, it’s waaaaay cheaper just to get a domain name with Go Daddy.

If you’re a “no muss, no fuss” type of person, just purchase the more expensive domain name with the company you’ve built your website with and be done with it. But if you’re more of a frugal and do-it-yourself type of person, I would get the domain name with Go Daddy (since it’s probably cheapest this way) and “point” it to your web host. There should be instructions with your web host provider on how to “point your domain”.

To have even more of a professional look on the web, you can have your email address end with your own custom domain, such as contact@mydomain.com. Again, web hosting companies can offer you this for either a monthly or annual price. However, I know a way to get 100% free email with custom domains.
