Children's Books that Teach Vocabulary

In two previous posts, Vocabulary to Teach High School Students and Vocabulary to Teach Kids I shared with you how to improve your child’s vocabulary whether he is in elementary, middle or high school. In this post we are going to talk about the books and worksheets.

For grades, K-2 it is important to focus word in the sight word list whether it is the dolch or the Fry sight word list. These list contain the words that are found in high frequency use the books this age group read and it will improve the quality or read fluency which means he is less likely to stumble over words while reading. To take a look at a partial list of the Fry sight word see post Vocabulary to Teach Kids.

I recommend the sight word reader series by Roxanne Lanczak because these books are specifically targeted to using sight words which makes it easier for us as parents not to play the guessing game on what books to use for sight words. Click here to see a list of sight word books. I also like the fact that the books are not too long and easy reads so that he, meaning your child, doesn’t get overwhelmed.

Generally speaking by the time he is in Grade 3-5, he is reading chapter books. It is crucial during this time that you pay close attention to his reading because the level of the books vary. For instance, the I Can Read series is good for this grade group, but their are 3 levels. Each has a varying degree of hardness. You will have to monitor it he is struggling to read the words by stubbling over too many words or that he goes through the book quickly which indicates the book is too easy. Either way you will have to adjust the reading up a level if the book is too easy or down a level if the book is too hard.

In grades 6-12, he becomes so independent, but their is still a way to help them improve their vocabulary. This age group needs to learn greek and latin root words. As I explained in a previous, post because it improves his vocabulary and reading comprehension. The best way to teach greek and latin root words is through worksheets.

For example, let's look at the following words: recede, repel, reproach, recant or reduction.

Word	Meaning
recede	go or move back or further away from a previous position
repel	drive or force (an attack or attacker) back or away
reproach	the expression of disapproval or disappointment
recant	say that one no longer holds an opinion or belief, esp. one considered heretical
reduction	the act of making something smaller in size, amount, number, etc.

In conclusion, vocabulary is important to understanding what is read and the speed. Also, any child can benefit from an increase in vocabulary.

Vocabulary to Teach High School Students

As our kids get older, we forget the importance vocabulary has on reading and comprehension. It is important not to forget the vocabulary for high school students because vocabulary can be crucial to them understanding and thus doing well on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), any test and reading in general. A good place to start is with greek and latin roots words.

Why study greek and latin roots? It is important to study greek and latin roots because the english language is based almost entirely on greek and latin roots so when you know a root word you will be able to learn or understand new vocabulary words much easier such as the words your child might encounter while taking the SAT, reading or taking a test.

Since I am not studying for the SAT, I am going to give you a simplistic example of what I mean by you being able to learn or understand multiple words by studying root words using the root re- or red-. It is the latin prefix which means back, again. Once, your child knows this root and if he sees words beginning with re- or red- he will be able to understand its meaning. For example, let's look at the following words: recede, repel, reproach, recant or reduction.

Word	Meaning

When you look at the chart (see above), notice how each word’s definition has either again or back in the meaning? This proves the point that if the student knows greek or latin roots he will be able to figure out the meaning of words which are foreign or new to him. The words I used here for illustrative purposes are just the tip of the iceberg for the amount words that can be formed using the re- or red-.

Moreover, the context clues received from the words surrounding the root word will increase or improve the chances that he will understand or accurately interpret the meaning of the word accurately.

Finally, it is important not to forget to teach high school students vocabulary especially greek and latin roots so he can a better understanding of words even if they are unfamiliar. I have used the book Red Hot Root Words Book 1: Mastering Vocabulary with Prefixes, Suffixes and Root Words to learn root words regardless of the grade level it is written for you still get the benefits of broading his vocabulary which is the point.

With gas and food prices rising to astronomical proportions, It is vital for survival to regularly review your budget to keep your expenses under control.

That being said I started thinking about how many times my family and me eat out. We eat out about 2-3 times per week which is about $7 to $10 per meal per person bringing total to $21 or more. Which is about $30 per meal and $90 per week. This really adds up.

So based on this I decided to buy a cookbook with quick, easy and cheap meals. This was very helpful because I was able to save more money and have delicious meals.

Vocabulary to Teach Kids

Reading becomes increasingly important the older your child gets. Therefore, if he is not reading on grade level you might want to start by improving his vocabulary. How? By making sure you teach your child the vocabulary which is recommended for their age. For grades k-5 you want to stick with sight words and for grades 6-12 you will want to for on greek and latin root words.

What are sight words? Sight words are words your child should recognize by sight. It is important that your child learn sight words because it will increase their reading fluency as they get older and by the more words he knows. What is reading fluency? Fluency is the speed you child reads. It will help them read faster without stumbling over words.

For grades 6-12, it is important to teach them greek and latin root words for two reasons. One, the english language is completely derived from greek and latin roots so that when you study these roots it increases your vocabulary exponentially. Two, when your child takes the SAT to attend college he will be prepared.

Improving your child's reading skills is important and possible as long as you focus on the vocabulary which is appropriate for his grade level. It will also improve his reading fluency and comprehension. Please check out the list and links below to get more information.

Reading is more than simply memorizing words, you must know the meaning of words and how to use them correctly in sentences. Decoding and fluency will increase your child’s reading speed along with the reading grade level.

How to Start a Summer Reading Program for your child

Generally, I can’t wait for summer because I get a break from homework and chaperoning my child from one activity to the next. However, this summer after reading How to GetYour Child to be a Fanatic Reader as reported by cnn.com, I am going to make sure I get my child to read 3 – 4 books over the summer. I hope you are inspired to do the same with your child(ren).

Here’s how:

1. Inform your child of the goal you are setting for them.

This is a very important step. You want to make sure your child is onboard with reading the books and accomplishing the goal even if you have to promise your child a treat or reduce his chores. Otherwise, your child might rebel against reading.

2. Assess your child’s reading level.
Just because your child is in a particular grade doesn’t mean he reads on that level. He could read below grade-level, on grade-level or above grade-level. By determining his reading level first, you make sure you child is not reading a book that is too hard for him because if the book is too hard your child will become frustrated and you don’t want that problem.

3. Help your child pick a book.
Once you figure out your child’s reading level, help them pick out a book on their reading level. By helping your child pick out a book instead of telling him the book you want him to read, you empower your child and make him feel as if he has a choice. 4.   Schedule daily reading time. .
So that you child has no excuse to read, let him know he must read at specific time daily. This will help prepare his mind so that he knows what is expected of him and when. No excuses! Also, require he carry a book wherever he goes because you never know when he has downtime and can read a page or a paragraph.

5.       Complete a writing assignment.
You should consider reading the book too so that you can ask him intelligent questions about the book and make sure his answers are correct. By questioning, him you improve his reading comprehension.   It is better to have your child complete in writing depending on their grade level.

Reading is a great summer activity to improve reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary which is important in school and life.

Recently, when I found that I was so busy living life that my laundry hamper was about to explode, I began to panic. Wondering how am I going to get my laundry done while I work, pick my son up from school and cook dinner. Since I don’t have the luxury of having a washing machine and dryer at home, I remembered seeing a sign at the laundromat that I frequent stating the 4 minute wash.
I decided to inquire about the 4 minute wash. What do I have to lose at worst it could be a crock or there really could be a way to get your clothes washed in 4 minutes, if only I would inquire about. So I did. Brace yourself, it is a wash and fold laundry service. The premise is that you drop off your unsorted, soiled laundry and assuming their is no line, you get your clothes weighed and a pick up slip in 4 minutes.

Since this was my first time using the service, I had several questions. How much does it cost per pound? Will I be able to get my clothes the same-day? This is called same-day service. What kind of detergent do you use? Most wash and fold launderer don’t use regular laundry detergent, they use an industrial formula which removes stains and is non-hypoallergenic. Can you hang my jeans and shirts on hangers, then fold the rest. I figured if they hung up the things I usually hang anyway this will save me even more time because I would only have to put everything away when I got home without the inconvenience of washing the clothes.

After my mind was put to ease that my clothes would be washed together and not mixed with some strangers, I decided to try the service because I had nothing to lose and everything to gain such as clean laundry .

I am glad I tried the service. They told me I could pick up my clothes after 6pm so I arranged my schedule so that after dinner, I could pick my clothes up. After dinner, I went to pick up my clothes. I returned so quickly that my husband was surprised that I was back. I had my clean clothes in tow. The folded clothes were ready for the dresser and the clothes on the hanger were prepared for the closet. I was floored. It took me all of 15 minutes to put the clothes away.

You should try using a wash and fold service especially one that offers pick up and delivery because they will pick up the clothes from your house and deliver them when clean.

Are you married or do you have a significant other? I am married and when I saw the movie Date Night, I became very embarassed. Let me tell you why. Before we got married we went on dates and spent alot of quality time together. Now we are married, have a child and have settled into a routine. Is this a mistake?

I somewhere "50% of all marriages end in divorce". Before seeing the movie Date Night, I didn't understand what all the fuss was about when people would say you need to treat your wife like your girlfriend and your husband like your boyfriend. It means make sure you pay attention to your spouse so that you can keep then interested and attracted to you. This is not an easy task when you have family and a household to run together, but it is vital to keeping your household and family together.

Remember, when you were dating you paid close attention to each others likes and dislikes and really got to know each other. Do you pay attention to those things now? If not, you should. Remember when you used to dress in sexy lingerie to come to bed and seduce him? But now, he is lucky if he gets sex. Well if this is you, I am sending up the red flag. You could be headed towards divorce.

If you are looking to rekindle the flames of your marriage or relationship, then starting up a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly date night and don't put it on the back burner. You could be saving yourself alot of stress by avoiding a divorce and loving the one you are with. Do you worry about how you are going to save money for your kids to go to college? I use to worry until a friend told me about setting up a free upromise account.

What is a upromise account? It is a free account where participating companies donate a pre-arranged percentage of your purchases to your account.

How does a upromise account work? You securely register the credit cards, debit cards and any rewards card of participating companies. Then, when you make purchases at those participating companies they donate a percentage of your purchase to your account.

Let me give you an example. I have a car so I buy gas regularly. Prior to joining upromise, I primarly bought gas from BP. Some people are saving as much as $300.00 or more yearly.

How are you going to celebrate NIVW? What is NIVW? It is National Influenza Vaccination Week which year.is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. An added benefit of getting a flu shot this year is that the H1N1 (swine flu) and influenza shot is one shot instead of two like it was last year. The 2010-2011 season's NIVW is scheduled for December 5-11, 2010.

Who should get a flu shot? People who should get the seasonal vaccine each year are:
1. Children aged 6 months and up
2. Pregnant women
3. People 50 years of age and older
4. People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
5. People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
6. People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:

a. Health care workers

b. Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu

c. Household contacts and caregivers of children <5 years of age with particular emphasis on vaccinating contacts of children <6 months of age (these children are are at higher risk of flu-related complications).

Where can I get a flu shot? You can get a flu shot at most your local drugstore chain such as CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid. Another get resource is your local health department. Although their flu season is over, during NIVW they do give flu shots. You can reach your local Department of Health and Human Services.

I believe it is important to a flu shot every year. Also, I am glad that the H1N1 and influenza are offered as one shot this year. I always get my family vaccinated. Even if you can’t get a flu shot because you can’t afford it, there are things you can do. Viruses grow in warm, moist places such as the nose, ears, eyes and a woman’s genitals. Therefore, it is important to wash your hands constantly and keep your hands away from these areas when you are out and about. We have a strict policy to wash your hands as soon as you come into the house and we, as a family, haven’t been sick in years.

By getting a flu shot and making your family aware that they should wash there hands constantly, especially right when they come home, you reduce stress because you don’t have to worry about taking off from work to take care of them.

Do you have a mom's agenda book? I find having a book of weekly to-do list really helps to keep me sane. You might think why do I need to make the effort to write a to-do list. What if I told you that you will feel less stressed which is a constant reality for a mom. Try it. Make a to-do list everyday for a week and reflect on how it makes you feel at the end of each day.

Mom's are constantly interrupted this makes it difficult to stay focus, let alone organized. Do you find yourself blowing your whistle when your are interrupted? It is because your concentration is being disturbed. Do you feel like you live in a reactionary world? Do you want it to stop? Start by making a list of things you need to get done.

Keeping a weekly planner has the following benefits:

Focus - You will always have a focal point if you get distracted which will get you restarted on the task at hand.
Less stress

Remember all necessary tasks

Don't waste time on unimportant tasks

It doesn't matter what type of planner you use, whether its paper or digital. Just make sure you stick to using it. I prefer a combination of digital and paper because its always easier for me to write something down and transfer it to my PDA (personal digital assistant) later.

There are alot of companies which offer organizers to match a variety of needs. Franklin Covey offers a variety of paper and digital organizers. Remember the Milk is an free online organizer which even allows you to update your to-do list via phone. Another to-do list service is cozi. Check out these products to see which one you like best. I do not recommend you use a one-sheet to-do list because they are easy to lose.

Times when life got very stressful for me, my to-do list became even more valuable to me.

If you are not using a to-do list or some sort of weekly planner system, decide to start now. It can give you sanity!

Did you know that there is a cheap green way to unclog a drain? I find this hard to believe so I must share it with you. Recently, I had a tough clog to unplug. I was looking for a way to unclog it economically. Liquid plumber is expensive and there is only on use for it.

After doing a search on how to unclog a drain, I wacided to try a solution which suggests using baking soda and vinegar because it is cheap. Also, baking soda and vinegar both have multiple uses. I poured in one-half cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar. I worked like a charm. Once, the vinegar was poured into the water it started to foam and fizz. Then the drain opened.

Here are some other uses for baking soda:

laundry detergent booster
natural whitener for teeth
deodorizer
oven cleaner (cuts grease without damaging the surface)

Baking soda is a miracle. I now keep a large container of it under my sink at all times. It cost me about $2 to unclog my drain.

Grocery Shopping List Made Easy

Do you forget to put important items on your grocery list? I do. It really makes me mad when I forget to certain items on my grocery list. To alieviate this problem, I put a sheet of paper on the refrigerator and as I run low or out of stuff, I write them on the grocery list.

I also let my family know to do to the same. This way if they use the last of something and I don't know about it, it is still on the list.

I order my groceries online. So before I order my groceries, I double check the refrigerator and cabinets to make sure I have everything.

Have you tried ordering your groceries online yet? I have and I like it. By ordering my groceries online, I don't overspend by buying impulsively (~~I only order what is on the list~~) and I don't have to wait in long lines.

So put a sheet of paper on the refrigerator so that you write your grocery list as you go and order you groceries online. Then, come back and let me know how this works for you.

Poverty is the New Middle Class

As more and more people are finding themselves unemployed and underemployed, the amount of people living in poverty is increasing.

The federal government defines the poverty level as a family of four living on $21,000. Since the majority of New Jersey households spend more than the recommended amount of 30% of their income on housing costs, the poverty level is defined as $42,000 for a family of four.

Living at this level of income, leaves very little money for other essential living expenses such as food and clothing.

The maximum weekly benefit for unemployment in New Jersey is $584, which is equivalent to $30,368 annually. Typically it takes a year for the unemployed to return to employment because jobs are scarce and the unemployment rate is high at 10.1%. Causing people to forgo essential purchases and living on a significantly reduced budget.

To complicate matters further, people are taking parttime or are underemployed. Taking parttime jobs and jobs at reduced pay or out of the fields results in them earning far less. Also, preventing people from being able to return to the same standard of living they enjoyed before losing their job.

Even though the job outlook seems bleak, there are still jobs out there. Here is a list of the top 10 jobs which are still in demand:

1. Registered nurses

2. Home health aides

3. Customer service representatives

4. Food preparation and serving workers

5. Personal and home care aides

6. Retail salespersons

7. Office clerks

8. Accountants

9. Nursing aides, orderlies and attendants

10. Postsecondary teachers

In new global economy, it remains important to become educated and pay close attention to job trends. This will help rise above the poverty line.

Kids clothing can be very costly because kids grow so quickly. A great time to buy clothes is when they are on sale and at the end of the season.

The Children's Place is having a big sale at their store on amazon.com and shipping is only $5. I like shopping at the Children's Place because they great quality, generous sizes and exceptional sale prices. Their clothes are high-end department store quality. The generous sizes give your child room to grow into the next size. I remember buying my son a size 6, when he grew into a size 8 he was still able to wear the shirt and pants. So, I was able to buy a size 10 for him to grow out of.

Another, way to save money is to buy the next size up when the clothes are on sale. I always by my son's next winter coat at the end of the season. At the end of the season, the coats are on sale at 50% off or more.

Since kids grow out of their clothes so quickly, I buy 2 weeks worth of clothes at a time. This way they have plenty of clothes to wear in-between washes.

3 Ways to Save Money on Kids Clothes

Buy 2 weeks on clothes - Kids grow fast. Don't buy too many clothes.
Wait for end of season sales
Make sure you buy quality clothes - Shop at The Children's Place when they are having a sale. They offer quality clothes and generous sizes

This is how I shop for kids clothes and it help me save time and money because I am not constantly going back to the store and I am not buying clothes he won't wear. Wii fit is a space-saving gym with an added benefit. It also provides great entertainment for the whole family.

To use the Nintendo Wii as a personal training system, you will need a wii gaming system and a wii balance board. The wii balance board calibrates using age and weight. This is the same pertinent information a personal trainer would use to design a personal fitness program for you. It also serves as a personal trainer by tracking your calories and allowing you to customize a personal program to help you reach your fitness goals.

The two games fitness programs I like the best are hoola hoop and skiing. I call them games because I was introduced to the both of the first time at a family party and was impressed by the activity level that was involved. Each activity provides a total body workout. I felt just like I was skiing and hoola hooping after the wii corrected my posture and motions (just like a personal trainer). You don't just have to try an extreme sport, they also offer traditional fitness programs such as yoga, strength training and aerobics.

When you are not using the Wii as a personal trainer, the kids can enjoy the gaming system. You can keep them distracted and entertained while you take care of other tasks by letting them play games on the Wii.

I lost 10 pounds in 30 days by using the wii fit. If you decide to try the wii, you will have great results too. I am not just talking about losing weight, but the entertainment value as well. And the compact design of the wii system and wii balance board will fit anywhere.

Do you want to lose weight? I was able to lose 10 pounds in 30 days by developing healthy eating habits as a family and using wii fit.

First start by getting your diet under control. To do this make sure you develop healthy eating habits as a family. This will keep help you stay on track so that you and your family are eating the same meals.

The Nintendo Wii is a gaming system. It is cutting edge technology "senses" when your body is not in proper form and will correct you. Wii fit is a board you can by to use with the system. Since it "senses" your body position, it acts as a personal trainer in the comfort of your own home. By investing in this system, if you don't have one already, you will provides loads of entertainment for the entire family and a easy way for you to get started with your weight loss plan. You will need a Wii and a Wii fit kit.

My favorite Wii fit games are skiing and hoola hoop. Each of these activities offers a full body workout. By picking activities involving full body workouts it will save you time. Since I can barely squeeze working out into my schedule, I like to multitask by getting a full body workout. Hoola hoop and skiing are also good party games.

By using the Wii fit and developing healthy eating habits as family, I was able to lose 10 pounds in 30 days. I recommend you buy a wii fit because its like having a gym with a personal trainer in your home.

Do you wish you could catch up on your reading? After kids come along, it seems Mom never has the time to do things she use to enjoy such as reading. I now buy audiobooks and listen to them on my ipod. You might say audioooks are for blind people, but think again. An audiobook allows you the convenience of being able to multi-task which is one of Mom's many specialities. I like read listen to my audiobooks which I clean up or wash dishes.

The first audiobook I listened to was money saving expert Robert Kiyosaki. He is the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad in it you learn how to develop a get rich mindset. His "rich dad" taught him and his best friend Mike that it is important to develop their financial intelligence in order to be rich.

Just to put things into perspective, I enjoyed the book the same as if I had read it. You know how you reread passages in a story to make sure you understand it? You can do the same with an audiobook by rewinding it.

I encourage you to buy audiobooks from now on because they make it easy to stay connected through reading.

Buy and use a foodsaver

Do you throw food in the garbage? I use to. Did you know when you through food in the garbage, you are also throwing your hard earned money in the trash? Do what I did to end this battle. I bought a foodsaver and I use it religiously.

What is a foodsaver? Its a household device which provides a commercial-grade vacuum seal for food. Many times when you go to the grocery store you will find meats packaged in a vacuum seal. A vacuum seal keeps fresh up to five times longer than ordinary food storage bags.

Meat will last from 1-2 weeks stored in a vacuum sealed bag in the refrigerator. On the hand, if the meat is vacuum sealed and stored in the freezer it will last from 2-3 years. Foodsaver storage is not limited to meats, you store vegetables, pasta, rice, etc. It extends the freshness of just about anything. My favorite thing to store in the special foodsaver storage bags is meat I bought in bulk while on sale. It is a shame to catch a sale by using coupons for groceries and let the food spoil so I use a foodsaver.

Teach Your Family How to Cope with Life Changes

How do you deal with changes in your life? Do you go with the flow or resist it, only to learn later that you will still have to adapt to it? Since changes are apart of life whether they are expected or unexpected, it is important to learn how to with life changes. I recently read a book called, "Who Moved My Cheese?. It is a parable about life and dealing with change. I highly recommend this book.

The book is quite effective whether you by the kids, teen or adult version. The 4 characters are 2 mice and 2 littlepeople who are small like mice, but look like people. The story chronicles their journey through a maze to find cheese.

This story is so easy to understand that when I need my son to make changes he is reluctant to make that I remind him of the story and the character I need to be like which is Haw who knows change is hard, but required. He usually straightens up and acts appropiately after one or two reminders.

If you are going through changes in life that you are having difficulty with check out "Who Moved My Cheese?" It should be required reading for the entire family.
