Welcome to Episode 3 of the Working Muso podcast.

This week we're all about self publishing with an interview with Rob Cumberland of http://www.bemuso.com/. He's created this website over a number of years and amassed a huge amount of information on the music industry in general, and self publishing in particular.

His website details a great deal of the information you will need to unravel the mysteries of the music industry including maps of where the money goes and a recent addition is a case study on the business side of the Beatles'career. It's the sort of site you can be reasonably confident the content is well researched and worthwhile. Not least because it's not a profit making enterprise.

So if you're interested in original music, getting a record deal, self publishing, setting up a record company, writing library music or anything along those lines take a listen to the interview and have a look at the site.

We also talk about my latest acquisition the Zoom H4 which is a digital portable recorder. Usually we record in the studio using my Yamaha aw16g and a pair of good quality mics, but I was out in the field on this occasion and ... well if you listen you'll see (hear?!). And I hope we'll do a review of the Zoom H4 in one of the upcoming episodes.

Also I talk about another podcast that I listen to called The Podcast Academy. These guys are really at the front line in New media. In other words anything to do with podcasting. The reason I refer to it in this episode is that they have just released a recording from the annual Podcast Expo that was held in october 2007. It concerns the use of music in New media and is worth a listen. Welcome to Episode 2 of the Working Muso Podcast

In this bumper episode we have an unusual interview with drummer Jay Irving. Paul talks about the film Crossroads, a road movie with a musical conscience. Paul's enthusiasm for this film is limitless and it's not a big surprise because he's a big blues fan and loves film too. Historically speaking it references the alleged story of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil! I only realised recently that he wrote one of my all time favourites "Sweet Home Chicago".

I talk about a book called Playing From The Heart, by Robert L. Doerschuk. (we don't earn revenue from Amazon links. It's just there for your reference!). This book is important to me because it gives an insight into what music really means to some of the most famous musicians. Includes interviews with Chuck Berry, The Edge, Bonnie Raitt, Bootsy Collins, Billy Joel, Ginger Baker, Lars Ulrich and many others.

We also discuss...ME! And how I got into playing the sax, how long it took to get into a band, how scary it was and when I started making some money out of music.

This is episode 1 of the Working Muso Podcast.

In this episode we talk about how "Making Music Work" translated into our production of Gigmeister Rock Volume 1. We discuss determination and playing to your strengths. Paul talks about his musical influences including some superb studio playing as he discusses Mark Knopfler of Dire Sraits fame, Ry Cooder, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Paul Simon, Brian May and others. Of course Paul is a finger picking guitarist and he picks up the slide too.

We also do a review of a great new magazine from the

Sound on Sound stable called Performing Musician including a gratuitous and completely free of charge plug for a product called Snap Jack. The link gives a youtube demo of the product that I managed to track down.

In the next episode we have Jay Irving in the studio and he'll be talking about his exciting adventures trying to make a living out of drumming. We'll have him playing too and I'll see if we can persuade Paul to have a jazz jam with him. (Paul's not so sure about jazz).
