Scrambled Life Over/Easy

Something is Missing

2015-09-15T06:27:00.001-07:00

There is one thing that doesn't happen at a movie theater anymore and it makes me sad. It's something that most parents do with newborn babies, it's what we do with marriage proposals and it's a large part of the theater to me.

The unveil.
Peek-a-boo, the ring box opening, and the curtains being drawn open at the theater. How I remember it is much more exciting. There was build up. They didn't show you the screen until the movie was playing, and until then, you stared into that thick velvety curtain waiting for it to unveil the magic behind it. The lights would start to dim and the mysteriously controlled curtains would pull from the top, swinging the heavy bottoms with it. The projection would then show you what you paid for.

Awe.

Well, I've taken a little of the "awe" into my own hands by showing people something they don't see anymore. Film. Real, physical film movies. I bought a 16mm projector, a screen and learned as much as possible regarding handling and fixing film and its projector.

I set up as my friends show up. I feed the leader into the projector carefully, which pulls the rest of the film through a variety of spring loaded pulleys and sprockets.

---The Moment ---
The films perferations grab the first sprocket and bends the film like a snake back up, and then down and into the shutters view. The moment when the film hits the rapid scissor like action of the shutter, everyone grins. It's that nostalgic sounds everyone knows, but are now hearing in person for the first time in years.... or possibly ever.

That's what I like. Child-like excitement and the uncontrollable smiles and exclamations from adults of all ages surrounding a machine that is over 40 years old. We gather around a fire, talk and converse until that moment hits, and then get reeled in (pun intended) to the fanfare of classic movie goodness.

Two-thousand Fifteen

2015-01-01T11:01:00.001-08:00

It's here. We're in it.

Note to self: Do not bring moonshine to a new years party with expectations to avoid it. I made it, we all survived. Anticlimactic much like the 2012 end of the world scare, or Y2K toasters going crazy.

I think it's very interesting that the world celebrates a single finite moment so relentlessly. There IS no physical change. Normally we discuss time in such a general way. "We'll go later". "See you in an hour or so". "See you in a few minutes". For new years eve though, we focus on individual seconds.

In what other moment will you see an entire group of people gather together and anxiously wait for such an arbitrary moment. I wouldn't be able to gather 5 people together to watch me juggle flaming swords, let alone gather them for a moment that has zero actual benifit or gain to anyone. Purely a mentally perpetuated and emotionally driven moment throughout the entire crowd. That right there describes the entire celebration. Everyone is directly in tune, using their imaginations to visualize what this minute changover might signify for themselves. It's an emotional connection between the masses, and who doesn't want to be a part of an event? It's a simple event to join, and costs nothing to make happen. At the one moment before the hand strikes 12, everyone is in tune, in sync, and awaiting that sole moment of release.

Funny to realize the the moment is actually rather deceitful too. Such a finite moment, reinacted each hour around the world for an entire 24 hour period. I altered the technique I use to chase the sunrise on Instagram by searching for the #happynewyear tag and repeatedly refreshing. There, were all of the worlds posts as they happened. Everyone feeling as if their moment was the finite moment to make a change.

None the less, I took part in a celebration and suffered some of the physical consequences. Our host requested all cell phones to be locked in his safe. An excellent idea, but prevented many photos being taken. So, you will have to do as you likely did last night, and use your imagination for my photo.

How was your step into 2015?

2015 & How to deal with expectations

2014-12-28T12:02:00.000-08:00

I'm sitting beside an open window puffing on my wooden e-cigar blowing patterned whisps of menthol about the room. Louis Armstrong's scratchy "Thanks a Million" is playing in the background serenading my crisp Sunday afternoon.

Candid summer photo. A moment fondly remembered.

We all look back to the year that has freshly passed and contemplate whether we've accomplished what we hoped to. I've been looking back recently and what I find myself focusing on, is the wonderful events that took place. There have been new additions to my close circle of friends, hilarious comedic moments and even unexpected warm snuggles from a new special person in my life. Trying to predict or control these moments has always been a mental struggle for me. I want to control my surroundings at all times. I want to know what will happen later in my day, and it can easily bring anxiety to the forefront of my thoughts.

Here's the punchline. It's impossible. You can't control every variable in a day. Let's set the bar at a classy 50% split of control. Fair? There's traffic, other peoples' opinions, wants and needs, weather, finances and a trillion other possible factors. Like that silly patch of ice you didn't see while you were balancing 9 grocery bags in an attempt to do one trip from the car.

Accepting the natural variances in your day is key to releasing a little tension. Let it go. Tomorrow is another day, and yesterday is unchangeable. Tomorrow, by the way, will always be tomorrow. You can discuss the future all you want, but it doesn't make you more productive and there will always be another "tomorrow". There is only one version of "now". It just happened, and is happening again while you're reading this. If we can all enjoy the moment we're currently in, I think our day will begin to iron itself out over time. That being said, thank you for reading this right now and taking the time to spend a little downtime on my blog. I hope there is something to be taken from my future posts that will enrich your life.

Happy 2014, and to a happier 2015.

2013

2013-01-14T19:03:00.002-08:00

Dear 2013. I welcome you with the widest open arms I've ever given a year. You look more promising in my eyes, because I see through them from a different mindset. You're clearer and brighter than the years past, and I can't wait to fit snugly into your individual days to make the best of every one. I've got so many plans, and the world needs to see them. I'm not procrastinating. They're ready, and the people are waiting. Let's give them what they want. Together.

Neglect

2012-10-24T18:03:00.001-07:00

Taken by Alysha on the newly renovated Lilly Creek
Boardwalk. I've always enjoyed the concept of "out of place"
or desolation in my photography and will hopefully get further
immersed with it in the future.

Holy absence of everything. I clicked on Blogger like an old friend and realized I hadn't posted a single thing here in a century. Why not? The chances are still good that people will come here, but at the same time, I can't post everything everywhere right? In the same sense, you can't possibly read everything I write everywhere on the internet. If you're superman and can slow down time, possibly.

I hope you like this interesting variation of my Facebook cover photo that was taken the same day by Alysha. She did her own spin on things and I think it's excellent. A different eye sees different things!

Photo Restoration (1910)

2012-05-19T21:16:00.000-07:00

Take a peek at my restoration of this very vintage photo from 1910! I really enjoyed doing this photo because of it's age, and really thank Richard for bringing it in. It was a project for his mother, who's dad was in the photo on the right. Richards Grandfather would have been 9 in that photo, and he was born in 1901.

GTD Wireless Unit Review

2012-04-18T19:30:00.000-07:00

A simple test to show people how one of the best priced wireless systems really performs excellently! I noticed that this specific unit has an issue with one channel, and GTD simply said to send them the faulty unit for a repair. No questions asked. That's enough to keep me content.

A little Short for Spring

2012-03-28T20:13:00.001-07:00

I took a vote online to see what people enjoyed seeing me create, and with the results, created this film style short! Hope you enjoy, it took about 2 hours of frantic shooting and about 5 hours of editing. The video wasn't too difficult, but the audio was a very intricate journey. :P Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think! Click the "More info" button to subscribe as the shorts get more and more fun! Thanks everyone!

Canadian International Auto Show

2012-03-14T07:58:00.000-07:00

So the trip to Toronto was fantastic! Even with my car being destroyed just days before, the rental got me there and back (although absolutely horrible on gas) without issues! Hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed the trip!

Upgrade time. Phase 2.

2012-03-11T19:14:00.000-07:00

So it's time. Time for what? Time to get a new PC. I just can't pump out the material I want to with the speed of this li'l guy. So I plan a new PC to edit MUCH faster. If anyone is interested in any of the details of what I use or what I plan to buy, this is the place to do it. I don't post much on other media sites about my gear. Anywhoo, my trip to Toronto for the Auto show was fantastic. Spent some great time with my Bro, and enjoyed the cars on display. I love cars. And bikes. Bikes more. :P Here's a little screenshot of how the editing looks for the auto show video. :)

By request from jmahundi,TheKramer1985 & GM6589, I uploaded this here balance test for both the GoPro Hero 2 and specifically a Canon Rebel t3i with the Glide Gear Stabilizer. GM6589, unfortunately because of our short days here in Canada at this point, a running/stair shot wasn't added, but is exampled in the next uploaded video!

2012-03-05T17:08:00.000-08:00

So today was a great day for creativity. After shopping with my new YouTube Accomplice and finding all sorts of fantastic props and items, I came back to shoot a short demo of using the Glide Gear stabilizer. People had requests, and as promised, I've got the answers to the questions. I love the interactivity between the viewers!! Also, while looking around, saw an opportunity to turn my cellphone camera into a super wide angle shot, seen below. :P Please comment below here if you're reading. I always enjoy the feedback!

Jump in bed with Jerry

2012-02-23T07:04:00.000-08:00

So it's not often that you'll see me in bed, but I had a great discussion with my mum about how cool it was in the mornings to wake up as my brothers and myself. I think there's no better way, and I'm trying to figure out how to do it now being in my 20's. We'll see! I've got lots of great footage from my behind the scenes that only YOU will see on this site vs YouTube. The link will be private unless you get it here. One of the perks to paying attention. ;) I'm putting a lot together, so don't forget to subscribe to the Channel as well! We're only heating up!

2012-02-17T05:25:00.000-08:00

Because of a small bump in life, I didn't get a chance to make my weekly video blog, but did make this review of the Glide Gear stabilizer which I'm very pleased with. It took no time at all to get here from the U.S., and the product works perfectly for the small price! Check out the video!

Special Personal Notes

2012-02-06T08:56:00.000-08:00

Caught writing ideas in the early A.m.

For those of you that come to this page, I intend it to be a much more in depth look at ideas and behind the scene info. Obviously putting names and faces within these pages would be a little intrusive for the daily people in my life, but I'll do my best! For some, it may be interesting. For others, not at all. For today? Big news. I made the most unreal contact last night with a complete stranger that will probably change my life, and the way I look at people. If I had the ability to integrate this person into my daily life, I'd probably have some very interesting stories come from it. We may have nothing in common and yet already I almost feel like I'm looking in a mirror. We've never even met in person, but no worries, I'm not going down a dark alleyway to say hello. ha ha.

Photoshop
So I hope the Photoshop tutorials take off, being of a rather original nature from what I've seen. I don't currently have big views on my most current videos which is working perfectly with my big plan for stardom. ;) haha. With this, people wishing to understand Photoshop and how to do very specific things within it is possible without just being entered into the wash of comments with big channel users. I'm going to create a Gmail addy for people to send me their OWN photos to have featured as the one on my channel being worked upon. I think this will be fun for both the viewer and myself. They can literally follow the video and re-create the work I've done in their own home.

Alysha looking at the surroundings for interesting ideas

For those that have asked who the "brunette" is, in my photographs, her name is Alysha Lewis. She's the one fire breathing and a few others in my photo streams. She herself is quite the photographer as well, which is rare to see someone to content on both sides of the camera. She has a great eye and ridiculous "solo" skills. By that I mean, her photograph "Bones" and many others on her account was taken by herself, alone. That's skill. I can't imagine framing up a photo that well by myself. She's well on her way to being recognized as a fantastic & creative photographer.

Location

This would be a dream.

This has been a large topic on my mind lately. I need more space. I've made due with the amount I have for the time being, but I'm on the search for an affordable studio apartment. It's always been a dream. If you're from the area, by all means, fill me in. :P I've always been about high production value but it's usually done with less than minimal resource. No complaints mind you, I like to keep my feet planted on the ground, and be realistic about the needs vs. wants in life.

2012-02-02T21:22:00.000-08:00

The new Thursday Vblog is up on my channel. A little too much energy today, had a lot of split editing to do to shorten it up. :P Hope you enjoy!

Setting up the GoPro for behind the scenes action

2012-01-24T04:16:00.000-08:00

2012 is shaping up to be fantastic already. I'm too excited for exclamation marks even. Since you've taken the time to read this, I won't disappoint you today. This photo is how I'm capturing the vlogs you see on my YouTube channel "jubajer" which is more easily found by searching "Jerry Arbs". Using a Shure condenser mic, Canon EOS 550D, lots of lights and some small tricks in studio, I plan to further boost my quality in the next video posted this Thursday. I also plan on a short Photoshop tutorial video, introducing newer users to the basics of how to navigate through the application and also how to create and use layers, and masks within those layers for some awesome effects. I do have one other video to post, but I don't quite know if it's something for YouTube. I'd like my viewers to see consistency through my videos, and by that I mean good production quality, not handheld junk, but this seems worthy of a good listen. Anyhow, if you have questions, ask away. If you have snacks, come on by.

2012-01-19T18:24:00.000-08:00

So I'm back at it, and glad to be. Being able to look out and know I'm speaking to anyone in the world who may be listening, is awesome. I recently saw that I had one individual view from Kazakhstan, which even just as ONE view, made my day. Now posting a vlog every thursday with a better set up, more crisp image and an all-round better clearer mind set is very exciting. I hope the viewers enjoy what is happening in 2012!

There's the link to the new Boss 302 video posted today! Been lots of editing hours into this project and hope to get a lot of feedback from everyone! Lots of projects in the works for 2012 and they're well on their way as you read this. Show your friends. Show your wife, your kids and even your husband. I'm showin' everybody up in here.

Aww SHOOT!

2011-11-06T09:03:00.000-08:00

So I started shooting my latest project this week. This is what I would consider the beginning of something extraordinary, being my first proper quality video yet. I've shot a lot of silly shorts, and piddly projects, but haven't had the equipment to do what I really wanted to get out there, and this is one of them. The shoot went well, even with the extreme time constrictions, and I had the help of my friends. A small number of people kept it very simple for moving around and organization. I also learned to make sure to storyboard for the next project more efficiently to have locations planned come shooting day. Now it's on to edit 30+ Gigs of footage, and to dub all audio.

Going through the details in the script, trying to remember lines. ;)

Headed to the Gala

2011-09-23T06:22:00.001-07:00

Off to watch "Woman in the 5th" at the film festival last night. Had a fantastic time with my date, a great crowd and made a very unique friend in the business who I hope to keep in touch with. His whole production crew was very welcoming and I look forward to their next project. As for my understanding of the movie we viewed... ....after missing the first 10 minutes or so of this psychological mind game, we were both completely lost. Hahaha. Great time either way.

2011-09-17T20:25:00.000-07:00

The behind the scene blog stuff starts here! This is what the cake from my Shick & West 49 "Break the cake" competition ACTUALLY looked like smothered on my face, unlike how it seemed in the video. ;) That red writing? Yeah, that could have been glue by the way it adhered to my face. haha That Light behind me on the chair, was actually DIRECTLY visible in the video shining right at the camera which most people haven't noticed yet. ;) My favorite part of filming? When we went to shoot the scene where I lifted the cake to my face, just as I was in upward swing the camera beeped and died before we got it. Then we were left with this mess on my face and no shot of the cake hitting me!! That's why we used the low table shot in the final video to hide the face imprint second time around. If you look closely at the first time you see the cake, you can actually see that it's a little messed up. ;) P.s. This is the video that won me my iPad!

The video I'm talking about is right here ---> Break the Cake Competition Video
