ISPS – US is pleased to present:

Hearing voices is one of the most common experiences that people diagnosed with a psychotic illness have. Research has shown that many people continue to hear voices even after prolonged use of medication and this has meant that many voice hearers do not get relief from their experiences. The consequence of this is that many people live lives that are low in quality and high in distress. Many professionals are left frustrated when medication does not delivered the desired results.

Manchester Alliance for Community Care, Rethink Manchester Carers in Action & Working to Recovery, Presents -

Living Well with Voice Hearers

An information and discussion day for family members, friends and workers about people who hear voices.

You are the most important form of support for your loved one or friend.

Yet, there is very little practical information and advice available about people who hear voices (and have other extreme experiences like visions and paranoia) that addresses your needs as parents, family members and friends.

This workshop will provide a good sense about – and – practical things that you can do to help yourselves and family members who hear voices.

St Thomas Centre, Higher Ardwick Green, Manchester

Saturday 9th June 2012

10.00 – 15.30

PRESENTERS

Paul Baker and Karen Taylor from Working to Recovery, both have long experience of living with and working with people who hear voices.

AIMS OF THE DAY

The workshop offers a new perspective on what the experience represents and how you can help your relative/friend (including children and young people) cope with their distressing voices. It is indended to help you to develop new and more empowering ways of assisting yourselves and voice hearers in their recovery journey. Research shows that this way of working reduces anxiety and isolation; reduces hospital admissions and remissions; and most significantly enables you and the voice hearer to move on with their lives. The approach has proved particularly effective in assisting people who have not been responding to other forms of treatment and therapy.

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE

How to regain a sense of being in charge of your life

Understanding the voice hearing experience

Research and evidence for this approach

The practicalities of helping voice hearers

LEARNING OUTCOMES

An introduction to and working knowledge of the hearing voices approach and practical ways that you can assist a family member or friend who hears voices. The Day will be based on the belief that you are the experts and that by drawing on all of your experiences and ways of coping we will be able to assist each other.

WHO IS IT FOR?

In association with the Richmond Fellowship West Australia and Asylum Associates, Working to Recovery has produced a new DVD, which is now available for pre-order.

In this inspiring DVD the co-founders of the Hearing Voices Network, Marius Romme and Sandra Escher, talk openly and honestly about how the Hearing Voices Network developed through their initial work in the Netherlands with voice hearers to the establishment of a movement worldwide across at least 28 countries.

Marius says:

“In 1987, we had no idea the impact that the discovery that accepting and making sense of voices was a helpful alternative was going to have. Yet, after twenty five years of work we have built a unique and formidable movement of voice hearers and allies that has brought about a big change in the hearing voices are regarded and has found new ways of helping people overwhelmed by the voice.”

This DVD is NOW available to purchse – CLICK HERE
