Dear Readers,

I was quite excited to hear about a new project aimed at getting children involved in coding at an early stage.

I think it's a great initiative, and will enable kids as young as 9 years old to get a flair of all the lingo related to code, apps, and make it part of their daily lives..( things really have moved on from the orange letters on a black screen background :) )

About Us

CoderDojo is a not-for-profit organisation founded by James Whelton and Bill Liao that teaches kids how to code. It aims to teach kids creative problem solving skills and practical creative skills. It fulfills a void left by the Irish education system. Alongside teaching kids we also hope to provide an outlet for kids who know how to code to meet other kids with similar interests and work on projects in an environment with their peers around them, similar to how a co-working space works but less formal.

A bit of history

CoderDojo was first started in James Whelton’s school in early 2011 when James received some publicity after hacking the iPod Nano and some younger students expressed an interest in learning how to code. He setup a , computer club in his school where he started teaching basic HTML and CSS. Later that year he met Bill Liao, a entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was interested in growing the project into something bigger than just an after-school computer club. In June 2011 the first CoderDojo was launched in the National Software Centre in Cork where CoderDojo saw extreme success. The Cork Dojo saw people travelling from Dublin frequently to attend sessions. Owing to this popularity a Dublin Dojo was launched soon after in Google’s Montevetro building. The increasing success lead to 2 more Dojos being setup in Limerick and Kerry.

I'd like to wish you and your family a very happy, healthy 2012, and I hope that your dreams will come through in 2012.

If your new years resolution is to get a job, you'll find this blog entry particulary useful as it explains how you could use facebook to create your CV , promote yourself, and ultimately find a job!

It's particularly relevant , as you can read from the below blogpost.
It is written by an Italian man who emigrated to the UK as he couldn't find a job in his own country, which is something which is happening in Ireland on a daily basis too.

However, as he explains, he set it up here are the very usefull instructions in English and as he is Italian, here they are in Italian.. he found a job in his own country and actually very near where he is actually from.

On another note, if the above dosn't really apply to you, and you are heading to greener pastures for a while, but need to learn a new language to speed up the integration process, I'd suggest you join http://www.livemocha.com, which allows you to learn the basics of just about any language for free. You can also check them on Facebook here.
It's very interactive and I found the lessons very constructive, I would highly recommend it. You can also help others who are learning your language ( you'd be surprised who wants to learn your language!)

My new years resolution is , is to raise funds for charity. I have done it before, and really enjoyed it! I raised 4.500 Euros growing dwarf sunflowers ( mini sunflowers) for Crumlin and I have a couple of ideas to raise money , but I'd like to have your input, as the better the idea/product, the more likely it will succeed( and raise as much money as possible)

I have talked it before, there are a lot of gaming companies based in Ireland that have a lot of vacancies. The type of jobs can be in customer support, but also in fraud , community support, quality , testing and there is also a good few where you can be at the core of it all, design the actual games!

For those who love coding and creating , there are lot's of opportunities!

Add a language or two, and the world is your oyster!

Oh yes, it's really quite important that you LOVE gaming!!

I was reading an article in http://www.bizplus.ie and they listed following companies in Ireland in the (online) gaming industry.

So..

Activision Blizzard - couldn't really find the details of their offices in Ireland, but they seem to have a studio in Cork and Dublin - here is link to the vacancies

As I am based in Galway, I would know about Electronic Arts(also known as Bioware Ireland), as they have their European customer service here, and as it happens they are probably the largest.Lot's of vacancies - check out their jobs here.

Popcap Games (recently acquired by EA)have an office in Dublin, and primarily involved in the game development side of the business. Check out their vacancies here

And another player - Zenimax Media - also based in Galway( all good things happen in Galway:) - sorry I am biased) Here is the link to their vacancies. From what I can gather , they are a specialist MMOG, which is means Massive multiplayer online Games. A great example would be The Elder Scrolls, where millions of people play this game on line and pay a micro payment to play this game. ( I have learnt something new!)

Gala Networks Europe - a Japanese publisher, also in the MMOG sphere ( but the games are free), with offices in Dublin ..check out their vacancies here. It seems Martial arts is their thing!

Hi all,

As the presidential election is in its final day and voters will be casting their votes tomorrow, I thought I'd tell you about the other things that are happening in Ireland.

The presidentials elections ( like in any other country ) are always a recipe for controversy! You can read the latest one here...

Check out this Wiki , the are ( affectionally) called the magnificent 7 ( though I'd rather call them the 7 musketeers if there was such a thing, normally it's the 3 musketeers).

I was listening to htt://www.4fm.ie yesterday, and was touched by the story of JJ Kane. You can listen to it here : http://www.4fm.ie/listenagain-tuesday/ and select the 1/2 o'clock repeat.

As you can read here thanks to the radio program, well over 10 000 Euros was raised for JJ.

It wasn't looking great a few days ago, when his parents were refused financial help from the HSE, as you can read here.

I was just so happy to hear it's all going to work out!!

I was also delighted to read the Benhaffaf twins ( who were born conjoined)were fitted with prosthetic limbs, and it appears they are thriving, kicking footballs and climbing where they shouldn't, like any other little boys!

And last but not least.. it seems we have bettered our own record with regards to rainfall! Check out this article..

Data from the agency shows that 82mm of rain – around three-and-a-quarter inches – of rainfall was recorded at Casement Aerodrome at Baldonnell in south Dublin yesterday – the highest amount ever recorded for any date in October, which is more than 1 months of rainfall in a matter of hours,and this meant complete mayhem, particularly in Dublin.

I am in Galway, and we had our fair share of floods 2 years ago, and I really hope all goes back to normal fast..

I had great fun and also shed a few tears watching yesterday's episode of Don't tell the bride!

Here is the info..

The concept of the series is that a couple, who are madly in love and can't afford to marry, are given 10k for the wedding of their dreams. But there's a catch, a very big catch. They must get married within three weeks and the groom has to arrange everything, from the dress to the venue. He and his bride are contractually bound to have no contact until the big day.

The couples hand over their mobile phones and sign a contract, in the presence of a lawyer, before separating for the three weeks the groom has to organise the wedding.

His best man and groomsmen can help with all the arrangements and the choosing of the wedding dress, but at the end of the day it's his bride he is aiming to please.

There are six episodes in this run of the series featuring couples from Dublin, Sligo, Cork, Donegal, Meath and Carlow. Some of the couples have cancelled previous wedding dates due to redundancy, others just haven't been able to get it together to get wed.

Within the series we see a couple from Dublin, who've intended to marry three times before, get married in a land mark venue that's never before hosted a wedding. One bride gets a helicopter ride to her local church, while a groom makes a disasterous decision about the wedding reception.

There are tears and tantrums throughout, but always a happy ending.

CONSENSUS: A CROSS-BORDER HOUSEHOLD ANALYSIS OF CONSUMPTION, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY IN IRELAND

This project was funded by the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) Programme 2007–2013. The programme is financed by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2007–2013. It is administered on behalf of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which has the statutory function of coordinating and promoting environmental research.

Lead Organisation: Trinity College Dublin

Project Overview

This 4 year collaborative research project involving Trinity College Dublin and National University of Ireland, Galway, examines four key areas of household consumption that currently impact negatively on the environment and inhibit our ability, both in Northern Ireland and the Republic, to achieve sustainable development: transport, energy, water and food. A set of 7 integrated work packages will address four key themes: how consumption can be measured and evaluated; how sustainable behaviours and incentives are being developed and implemented; identifying links between consumption, health and well being; and finally how matters of household consumption are being governed through institutional practice and participation.

The CONSENSUS project will respond to national and international research objectives on sustainable consumption in three main ways:

1) It will generate important baseline data for Ireland in key areas of consumption that impact directly on the environment, including transport, energy, water and food.

2) It will address existing gaps in the international body of literature dealing with (sustainable) consumption

3) It will advance possibilities for measuring sustainable consumption through the development and application of innovative social research methods. These include the design and testing of a multi-method strategy for evaluating virtual mobility tools.

The project will provide an overview of international best practice and design recommendations for national programmes in Ireland concerning sustainable consumption and production policies, in addition to recommendations about procedures, techniques and policies for advancing sustainability at the local level.

The project involves collaboration with a number of key international and national agencies and organisations, such as SCRI in the UK and BordBia and the Sustainable Energy Agency in Ireland, and will assist these organisations in their decision making by providing essential relevant and timely information and research results.

ONE OF THE KEY OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION RESEARCH NETWORK (SCRN).

Every Cloud has a silver lining !

Dear Readers,

It took me a while to come up with this title, but I think it matches my next article particularly well.

Not a day goes passed in Ireland where we talk about the weather, mostly that we had a pretty bad summer, and the hopefull reports of a Indian Summer ( ie a bit of sun late September ) also fell to pieces( or at least in West of Ireland ), as unless this Indian summer was concentrated between lunch and 3 PM on Wednesday afternoon, we didn't get to have that wonderful feeling of warm sunshine either...

However.... it seems our moderate weather doesn't deter the likes of Google to expand here creating 200 temporary (construction jobs) and 30 full time jobs, citing our weather as optimal to maintain the temperature in their server rooms , as you can read here . ( We'll just ignore the previous winter - boy it was cold!)

And then the announcement that also Twitter has decided to set up shop in Dublin, more to be read here .

So it seems we really are getting our own version of Silicon Valley, as now all the major players have a presence in Ireland. ( Google, Facebook, Ebay, Paypal, Microsoft, LInkedin) and I am sure there are more to come!

Created by percussionist Robbie Harris and Dave McFarlane, this very special Family Show features Robbie Harris (Bodhrán and percussion), Adelson Maia (Brazilian Berimbou and Capoeira), Mick Donegan (Tap Dance), Nono Mandolo (South AFrican Gospel), Daire Bracken (Fiddle), Niwel Tsumbe (Congolese Guitar and Vocals) and Kelly Baldonado (Brazilian Dance and percussion) and live video feed, The finale is a full-on participation by the audience, playing the intriguing BoomWhacker! And if you don’t know what that is you’ll just have to come to the Seapoint Ballroom and get your hands on one!

The productions values for this show are of the highest international standard, and that’s where we hope our Fund:it Partners will come in.

All funds raised will go towards recreating this brilliant show in Galway for four performances over two days. In order to meet the challenging production and technical demands for this show, we need to transform the Seapoint Ballroom and require particular techncial equipment, including a back projector to provide a live video feed onscreen. Not forgetting bringing the 400 BoomWhackers from Dublin to make it all end with a bang!

The response by children to music of all kinds is amazing, as we have witnessed over the years, and these four gigs promise to have them rocking over the weekend.

Based in Galway, the festival runs for 8 days in 2011, from October 16th to 23rd, and features beautiful, exciting, inspiring theatre, dance, puppetry, music, literature and visual art and craft for children and families in venues across the city and on tour in the county.

We take measures to ensure that access to the arts is within reach of as many families and children as possible. We keep ticket prices low for schools (€6.50 and €5.50 for DEIS Schools) and provide a Bus Subsidy, FREE Teacher Engagmenet Packs and FREE Teacher tickets. We work with local organisations to provide access for schools and parent and toddler groups facing challenges.

We keep Family ticket prices low too - €8 for individuals and €25 for a Family of 4.

Our programme for 2011 includes some amazing shows, from Germany, England, Italy, Romania and Spain, and a full programme of work from Irish companies, including the World Premiere of Monkeyshine Theatre’s new production Losha.

Due to a recent house move Haiti Connect is now in urgent need for space to store donated equipment before it is shipped to Haiti. At our previous location we have plenty of storage space to keep our equipment & donations safe but our new location has very little storage space. Hence we are on the lookout for a storage facility. Our preference goes out to a Portacabin or shipping container that we can place beside our current location so that everything is kept close at hand. I am sure that there must be someone (or some company) out there with one of these to spare and who would be happy to donate the use to a good cause.

Alternatively we are looking for someone in or near Portumna or Loughrea (co. Galway) who has a building with a vacant space that we can use. It needs to be secure & dry but that is about it. The amount of eqiupment that we store on average is 5 – 6 shipping pallets and a number of boxes.

I suppose this week/last week has been a mixed bag of job losses Talk Talk Call Centre to close in Wexford - with the loss of 550 jobs -and 400 workers face dole as troubled firms wield axe.

I know that's all bad news and my heart goes out to those on the receiving end, but there are also some positive announcement, as the expansion of VM Ware in Cork who are announcing 250 new jobs.

I just noticed a new section on the Enterprise Ireland website so you can see all the companies in their portfolio and if you click on the relevant logo of a company it will bring you to their currrent vacancies. Some of them go straight to the client's website, others go to www.jobs.ie

I also wanted to remind you of the Jobbridge initiative .

What is it again?

JobBridge is a new National Internship Scheme that will provide work experience placements for interns for a 6 or 9 month period.

The aim of the National Internship Scheme is to assist in breaking the cycle where jobseekers are unable to get a job without experience, either as new entrants to the labour market after education or training or as unemployed workers wishing to learn new skills. The scheme will also give people a real opportunity to gain valuable experience to bridge the gap between study and the beginning of their working lives.

The scheme will provide for up to 5,000 work experience placements in the private, public and voluntary sectors. This will be a time-limited scheme. Interns will receive an allowance of €50 per week on top of their existing social welfare entitlement. This will be payable for the period of the internship.
