More and more, my clients are asked, “What superhero would you be?” “Rate yourself on a scale from 1 to 10, and explain why,” “What would you do if you had six months to live?” “Sell me this pencil!” Once they get over the initial shock of moving beyond the standard questions such as “What’s your greatest strength?” my clients learn to respond with poise, humor, and presence, adapting to the unexpected on the spot. That’s what interviewers are looking for, so they can see how the candidate will respond to the unexpected when it happens (every day) on the job. Eventually, my clients learn to have fun with these questions. Since there’s no right answer, they learn to reveal their authentic selves through answering openly, with warmth and liveliness. Eventually, instead of dreading them, these questions become some of their favorites!

This summer, let yourself blend a spirit of exploration with a dash of practicality. Summer invites you to be open, adventurous–to try new things and take a few risks. And to take some time off–a vacation? A day-long retreat? But it’s also time to be practical, and one of the best ways you can achieve that is through some summer networking. People are a little less focused on work in the summer and wouldn’t mind sharing a tall glass of jasmine iced tea with you over at the Imperial Tea Court on Shattuck Avenue….or a phone chat to catch up. And don’t forget to keep adding to your LinkedIn contacts–one of the best tools for (relatively) painlessly building your web of connection.

Often my clients have a difficult time making decisions. The voices of parents, friends, bosses, and the internal worry wart are all strong. If you learn to listen to your own heart (take time alone, time to journal, a walk in nature, tea with a good listener), you’ll find that your heart embodies both your dreams and your practical needs. It’s that fear that listening to your heart will lead to impractical, crazy decisions that stops many people from trusting the heart. Your heart embodies all the parts of you and is the wisest guide of all.
