I witnessed an inspiring community of people determined to stay afloat despite limited resources and trying circumstances. Now I want to help them in any way I can, especially by raising money to purchase land to start a farm at House of Hope.

Currently House of Hope has great difficulty in raising enough resources to provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch for each child. If they had their own farm, each child would have three full meals a day, and the extra $14,000 a year saved in food expenses could be used for the children’s medical bills and general support for the project. At the moment it costs about $80 to feed one child for a year, which may not seem like much to us, but it’s quite a lot of money in Uganda. Once a farm is started by House of Hope, costs per child will decrease to just $17 a year, a life-changing difference!

What struck me most about the children of House of Hope was that despite the many hardships and traumas they endure in their lives, they were by far the most enthusiastic and happy children I have ever met. All of them had lost at least one parent, most had lost both, and some had suffered physical or sexual abuse, but they did not see themselves as victims. In fact they seemed to embody a wild joy for life that was both very contagious and very touching. It was quite a testimony for the human spirit, and I hope you will join me in letting them touch your lives as well.

House of Hope has identified 3 acres of working farmland adjacent to the project that is available for purchase. World Action, led by Zoe, is working to raise $15,000 to support this project.

Help Zoe and House of Hope purchase its own farm by donating today!

House of Hope Benefit Auction a Success!

Thanks so much to every one who came out to support our photography auction featuring beautiful photos of the staff, children and community at House of Hope in Uganda. And as always, what an amazing trip it was. As announced earlier, I had the privilege of traveling with 3 colleagues from the IOMBA masters program I am currently completing in Geneva, Switzerland. Emo, Sonia & Violaine (Hungarian, Colombian and French, respectively) made the visit incredibly fun, and also demonstrated extreme generosity and support to every one at HOH while there. My sincere, sincere, thanks to each of these incredible ladies for their optimism and sense of adventure while there. (Enjoy some pics here.)

So, upon returning from the week-long site visit to HOH as part of World Action’s annual monitoring and evaluation, I wanted to be sure and share news about a very unfortunate event that occurred at the project.

The evening before we arrived, there was a fire at the school. Unfortunately, it seems to have been arson as there was evidence of malintent. Luckily, none of the main school buildings were damaged too badly, though we did loose one temporary classroom to the fire. In addition, the brick dormitory structure that was nearly complete was taken down by what appears to be sledgehammers. All in all, damage has been estimated at about $12,000 USD.

The good news is that no one was injured, nothing was stolen and the livestock were left intact. I, along with Jenifer and her staff, was completely shocked as to who and why anyone would do this. However, over the course of the week and numerous meetings with police and community organizers, I have come to understand that this kind of reaction is not an isolated event in community development programs in Africa. The fire was most likely an act to intimidate Jenifer, a woman who is exhibiting strong, independent leadership and directing an incredibly successful community project that has attracted both local political and western financial support. Such a break with traditional power structures and the community status quo can often be met with acts of intimidation such as this.

Since the fire, Jenifer has received a flood of support from the community who came out in droves the following day and pledged volunteer time and financial support to help rebuild what was damaged (the financial pledges are significant in particular, given the extreme poverty most of these folks live in). Interestingly, the incident seems to have caused many in the local community to recognize the importance and value of the project. We believe these folks represent the vast majority and that the perpetrators of this incident were a merely a disgruntled few.

There is still much work to be done, however, to build more community support and gain the endorsement of local religious and tribal leaders to ensure this does not happen again. We are seeing this event as an opportunity to do just that. Last week, we helped to connect Jenifer with a local Ugandan woman who has significant community organizing experience. She has many years of experience setting up numerous, extremely successful, community based HIV/AIDS programs. She will be working with Jenifer on specific steps to better engage more of the community. Jenifer will also be working closely with World Action board member, Manka Johnson, who has significant experience working in East Africa.

There have been no interruption in services provided at HOH, and they have already begun rebuilding the temporary classroom. At the suggestion of our community organizating expert, Jenifer is working to garner more community support before beginning to rebuild the dormitory. A decision we support entirely. In the meantime, we have started a fund to support the dorm’s rebuilding. Donations to support rebuilding efforts can be sent to:

World Action for Humanity
P.O. Box 193584
San Francisco, CA 94119

Or directly online at: http://www.worldactionforhumanity.org/donate2.html

Together with Jenifer, World Action is using this recent event as an opportunity to reflect on the project and to build deeper relationships and develop stronger support from the community.

I wanted to be sure to share this information with our supporters around the world. This incident has given me a whole new understanding of the true development challenges these folks face in their communities, and motivates me and the World Action board even more to support the hard work of local leaders who are doing the real work on the ground. I feel completely confident that Jenifer and her staff will move past this incident and continue to expand upon the much-needed services they are providing to the Kyazanga and Nakateete villages.

Please feel free to contact me or anyone at World Action for more information.

Meantime, thanks again for all your continued support!

Nicole

New World Action Board Members Announced!

World Action is pleased to announce the addition of three new board members to the organization. First, thanks so much to every one who came out to enjoy the Afrofunk music festival – from everything I heard it was a week of fantastic concerts up and down the west coast – thanks SO Much to Jeremiah, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience and other the other participating musicians for so generously supporting our partners at House of Hope during these concerts – with you’re your help we raised over $2000! THANK YOU!!!

Pedro and I have been back in Geneva for a little over two weeks now – missing our friends in Africa but appreciating the change of environment as well (ah, the beauty of free WiFi has enabled the addition of pictures to this and previous posts below). We had such an incredible trip overall, and in particular, during the last leg there in Uganda with Jenifer and the family at House of Hope. How can I even begin to express what we saw/felt/experienced there? It was a very moving experience in many, many ways. By staying with Jenifer at her home out in Kyzanga, a village about 4 hours drive south of Kampala and the site of the House of Hope project, we experienced firsthand some of the challenges our partners face there daily. It’s difficult to communicate what I saw without sounding artificial and academic; the poverty, lack of access to clean water, poor hygiene, no electricity, soaring food prices, little to no education or tuition assistance, untreated illness and disease – but this is the reality. The good news is that there is hope, and by seeing what this young woman (Jenifer) and her staff are doing there I left feeling rejuvenated and energized to double my efforts – with the help of the fantastic World Action Board – to raise the financial support needed for their work. What I saw in my time there and what I have experienced while developing my relationship with Jenifer over the past year (over email alone) is that she has the know-how and experience to accomplish the ever sought-after “development” in Africa. Jenifer is accomplishing what no amount of planning by western governments, aid organizations, UN bureaucrats or millennium goals has yet achieved in Africa; simply because she understands the local customs, has ideas that will resonate with her fellow community members, and knows the impediments to success and their antidotes. She has, like hundreds of other local grassroots leaders across that continent and in every country, the critical know-how and long-term commitment to better her community. It’s simple really, it’s happening all the time around us, all around the world. Local people – when given the chance, opportunity and support – will move to action. And this action will be more successful in the long-term than any external effort could ever be. And therefore it is my belief, as is supported by the mission of World Action, that local people know what is best for their own communities, and it is their work that is the true path to sustainable development – however it may look. All of the time, effort and money that is poured into grand schemes to lift Africa out of poverty cannot be fruitful in the long-term without the energy and ideas of its own people.

So, how about some details about your visit to House of Hope Nicole… ? Okay, so Jenifer has now 168 students enrolled in the primary school (Globalize school as its now known), which is the central focus of the House of Hope project. Of those students, 104 are officially part of the Project, which means they receive free tuition due to financial hardship – that sounds a bit misleading; hardship, i.e.: our children have virtually no means of paying for school, food, clothing, shoes or medical care. But they get it at House of Hope! Unfortunately, we have had to cut-out the morning bowl of porridge due to the shock of food prices, so most of our kids wait until lunch to eat for the first time each day. For lunch, a healthy portion of Posho is served, a mush made from maize and water, and accompanied with beans -- which Pedro and I ate alongside the students and teachers while there. Some of the children also receive a meal at home for dinner, but for many, the lunch they receive at House of Hope is their one daily meal.

Jenifer has recruited a dedicated team of teachers: acting headmaster Peter (pictured below in the solo shot), five other teachers (most of whom have been with there since the school opened 2 years ago), a cook, a music teacher and a house matron. It was really beautiful to see the teachers with the kids because it is very apparent they care for the children in a deep way – it is much more than just a job. They are, as is Jenifer and headmaster Peter, far underpaid compared to the local government school. However, we hope to work on that this year. The kids are looked after in a truly holistic way: each child receives regular site visits at home by Jenifer, a staff member or a volunteer; their nutrition intake and home sanitation is monitored; they are given clothing and cleaning supplies; and they are taken to the doctor when they get sick or an infection. It is truly a community of care. However, that said, the need is great. I accompanied Jenifer on a home site visit and what I saw was disheartening. The living conditions are extremely tough, and unhealthy. The hardest part for me though I think, was seeing the change in demeanor of the children when seeing them at home versus while at school. At school, all the kids laugh and play and kid and joke and play soccer and sing and fool around – like any other schoolchild. But at home, they are visibly saddened – tired maybe – of having to live in squalor, drag big plastic heavy cans of water over 2 or 3 miles of hilly terrain each night, of having nothing to eat, or of having to make sure their younger siblings are cared for although they themselves are just kids. It was extremely difficult to see – it’s like their little spirits were broken. It’s a really bad thing to see a child’s spirit broken.

But – that brings us to the dorm project! We are almost there in raising the $10,000 usd or so needed to complete the on-site dorm at House of Hope, where 40 of our children in greatest need will come to live full-time. Yes, it’s a beautiful theory (and all the current rage among experts in child protection) that vulnerable children should be kept in their communities and raised by responsible guardians rather then placed in safe group homes. But unfortunately, the reality is that abuse exists – sexual and physical – of which many of our children have experienced. And in some cases, there is just no money to look after extra children. So we currently have 14 staying each night at the offices of House of Hope out of sheer necessity; our house matron Eva takes great care of them and they enjoy the comforts of home and laughter and safety there. But once the dorm is finished it will be a proper home and will allow all our children in need to move in.

I continued to be extremely impressed with the overall management of House of Hope and the school: given the challenges of operating in an environment with no electricity, virtually no assistance from the government and almost totally reliant upon support from donors, Jenifer and Master Peter have that school in top shape! Truly outstanding leadership at all levels, which makes our fiscal sponsorship of this project all them more humbling. House of Hope has also benefited from a stream of creative, energetic and committed volunteers thanks to Real Uganda, a fantastic local NGO that places foreign volunteers with small grassroots projects in Uganda. (Casey, a Real Uganda volunteer, is shown in one of the pictures closest to the bottom below.)

We have two older kids who have graduated from House of Hope and are now in secondary school (thanks to a generous donor all the way live from New Jersey;) ) Next year, we will need to find $250 scholarships for six more of our students who will graduate from House of Hope and would like to continue their education (equivalent of going on to middle school after completely the 5th grade). That is another interesting discovery about Uganda and its compliance with the Millennium Development Goals – the one that seeks free access to primary education for all children. Well, yes, in a way Uganda has complied, but on the ground, children arrive at school to confront fee demands for uniforms, books, supplies, teachers bonus, photocopies, “study packets” etc, etc, etc, all amounting to more that these children are able to pay. So, it is actually very far from free. We will work hard to support House of Hope until the government of Uganda figures out a better way. I do not believe handouts or long-term aid is any kind of solution for the development challenges Uganda – or any country – faces. But, I would also never want to see even one generation suffer as a result of its government’s ineptitude.

So with that, I ask, again, humbly, for your help. Whoever might be reading this blog – I ask you, we need your help. We need to get these kids a strong breakfast to start their day; we need to pay their teachers a living wage so they do not leave us and go teach at the government school where they will make twice as much; we need to get soap to each of our students houses so the cases of worms and fungus decrease; we need to get the dorm finished and furnished to get these kids in a safe, functioning environment. We need your help to do it. So, I’ll ask again; I know the economy is rocky, but what is $35? Donate easily at www.worldactionforhumanity.org. (all world currencies accepted via PayPal!)

Thanks so much for staying along for this verbal ride. Hope you’ve enjoyed it and we look forward to keeping in touch.

Much Love,
Nicole Carta

PS- some notes on the pictures since i am not tech savvy enough to figure out captions:
- the beautiful young Ugandan woman in several pictures is Jenifer of course!
- the dancers are none other than our own House of House dance troupe!
- in the picture with Pedro with the funny hat is Thomas, our very dear friend from Tanzania who works with Action Aid and was a former project coordinator with Boona-Baana, he traveled to Uganda with us on a small World Action travel grant to share stories, best practices with Jenifer and HOH team - great, great time
- In another photo, Thomas is helping us distribute de-worming pills that were purchased with money raised by teens across the US through new global citizens!
- In one picture, Pedro is shown during is class on women's rights (he took the boys with Teacher Ronalds, while I went with Jenifer and another volunteer with the girls - very good class!)

World Action on the Radio & Afrofunkin' it Up for House of Hope

As most of you have heard by now, we're in the final hours before the big Afrofunk Music Festival produced by Maisha Productions. It starts tomorrow night, Thursday, July 24 @ 9:00pm, at the Independent in San Francisco. The festival is three days of amazing African, Caribbean, Latin (and more!) music and proceeds support our partner project, House of Hope! Please come and/or donate, if you can! Maisha have been working hard to put forth an amazing event and you won't be disappointed!

Last weekend, Becky and I were asked to join Jeremiah Mpoh, from Maisha, to promote the event on KPFA's "Ritmo de las Americas" radio show hosted by Rosi Reyes. Click here to listen to the show: http://kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=27420 Note that we're about 45 minutes in.

In a serendipitous turn of events, Nicole and Pedro are with the House of Hope kids in Uganda! They've been in recent contact giving some updates (of which you will see more of on the blog, soon). I just wanted to share part of those emails as it pertains to the House of Hope project:

"I can't even begin to describe what an amazing time we're having out here with the project. The children are absolutley amazing, and Jenifer and her staff are a beacon of hope and security for these young children. It's truly an honor to work with this project. If you only could see how sweet and precious and so very much in need these kids are."

We're so excited that Nicole and Pedro can be with the kids while we are in San Francisco raising money that they'll see the direct results of. We're also so thankful that Maisha Productions has chosen House of Hope as its charity project for this event! We can see the community to community connections at work, all the time!

I hope to see you all at the event!

Greetings from Tanzania

Hello, it's nicole writing from Dar! pedro and I are having an incredible journey so far - can't believe its been just 2 weeks since arriving in africa, it seems like 2 months. that is the great thing about travel, without the routine of every day life, an afternoon can spans days.

The absolute highlight of Dar has been meeting (finally!) the 9 beautiful children at Boona-Baana's Green Door Home. they are each wonderful beautiful kids, filled with energy - a lot of energy - as all children are. I have not ever spent a lot of time around kids so this has been a complete joy and very funny at times. last week, our first week here, they were on holiday from school and were given a challenge by Mr. Marco (the co-founder of BB) to complete a 1,000 piece puzzle before being allowed to watch TV or use the computer. this proved challenging for all of us for many reasons! We also took a trip to Kipepeo beach (butterfly beach) which was a lot of fun. just getting to know each of these special children individually has been so great. When Pedro and I were here last, 5 1/2 years ago, the Green Door Home was just being completed and had not yet received any children, so it has been so great to meet them after only seeing pictures and reading brief histories on each. Linus, who is profiled on our website, is an even bigger rockstar then his bio reflects (he's provided me with an updated bio btw, which i'll upload to our site when back in Geneva is august). In addition to his nonprofit activities, he's also a musician and successful small businessman. details to come!

Dar has changed a lot in 5 years. What i remember as an almost sleepy town is now bustling. It's so interesting to see how it has changed. There are tons of new businesses, and traffic and even its first mall. we went to see the hulk there last night actually. Ha. We've also seen many friends we met last time, our good friend Thomas, who used to work at Boona-Baana and now does HIV community outreach for ActionAid, has been a gracious host along with Brooke and Marco. Thomas has shown us all around and we've enjoyed some really great fresh fish and great Tanzanian beer. :) We're staying at the BB volunteer dorms with 2 other volunteers, one from Holland and another from Belgium who is doing research here on the education system to complete her masters thesis. They are both great and have graciously showed us the ropes of volunteer life in Tanzania. We've fetched water ( i have learned to carry a bucket on my head! only bailed once after getting over zelous :) ) and have become fully accustomed to bucket showers. green door has had over 50 volunteers since we were here 5 years ago!

last weekend we were given the chance to go up to Saadani national park - about 2 hours north of Dar and the only park located next to the ocean - to experience a new safari lodge that will open in the coming weeks. A brother of a friend of ours asked us to come up and sort of try it out. What a treat. dinner by candlelight overlooking the Indian ocean. driving in we were greated by a herd of 10 - 12 giraff! It was incredible, really. The weekend was very special.

we're settled in now with a cell phone - +255 782 090 772 - feel free to give us a call! i have to go find Pedro - tonight we are finishing up individual interviews with each of the children which Brooke and Marco have asked us to complete while here. A basic check-in with each to see how they are feeling with school and life at the green door in general. A good idea.

last week as well we had the chance to meet with the acting country director from Concern Worldwide - a great group i got the chance to work with while at my last job, and they are great. Very impressive. and tomorrow we'll spend the day in the field with Kickstart, another great group working in rural agriculture.

Okay that's about it then- i am still getting used to this blog business, i feel weird actually. Like i am writing in a diary? funny, i guess i am so not tech saavy. we're looking forward to the next leg of this adventure which starts on Sat, when we fly to Zambia. We'll meet Tom and Vivian, the folks who pedro will return to and work with in Sept. they are meeting us in Lusaka and have asked Pedro to drive one of their trucks back to their safari camp from Lusaka. An adventure this will be indeed!!!

Missing our friends and fam and love you guys so much! Thanks for tuning in!!!
xoxo
nicole & Pedro

Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by the World Action blog. It's Nicole writing and over the next two months I'll be chronicling a trip that Pedro and I have been planning since last December. We'll be traveling to Tanzania and Uganda to visit our partners at the Boona-Baana Center (in Dar es Salaam) and House of Hope, in southwestern Uganda. We're also veering down to Zambia for 2 weeks to camp and see where Pedro will be working later this year. We're both excited -- and I'd say somewhat prepared -- for the adventure. The last time we were in Africa was in November 2002 before Boona-Baana had officially opened the Green Door Home and before any of the 10 kids who now call it home had arrived. We are so excited to finally be meeting the kids in person! We're also excited to meet Jenifer, the incredible co-founder, director and teacher-extraordinaire at House of Hope, and of course her staff and the 101 young students in Uganda.

We fly out a week from Tomorrow, June 9th, and will pass through Geneva for a week to get a few things in order for the graduate program I'll begin there in September. After that, we're on to Tanzania June 16 to start the adventure. We have some sleeping bags and sunscreen and a few other necessities, but mostly, we're prepared for a cultural experience beyond preparation. Thanks for signing up to see us along (and invariably laugh at our challenges and mishaps - as someone should!) I look forward to keeping you entertained! xo, Nicole

Whose With Us?

We're throwing a party and you're invited. It was fantastic! DJ Jeremiah was brilliant with his drummers and trumpeteer. The event he's throwing at the Independent in February 2008, on behalf of WAH is going to be "off the hook!" Can't wait!

At any rate, the food was amazing. The work the group is doing was great to hear about. They've done some interesting projects in Tanzania and Haiti.

Two WAH board members attended and met some of the members and learned a bit about what they're doing in the world. Here is the invite...

http://www.ewb-sfp.org/SFARI2007/

A Book

Yesterday, I happened to be in a bookstore waiting to meet with a friend when I came across this book.
