The five finalists took to the stage to perform three songs each, one of which was their specially composed World Aids Day track. The tremendous effort made by all the finalists was clear to see and the judges had a very tough decision to make when it came to picking a winner.

After some serious deliberation, the judges unanimously crowned Flares From Far Away as champions, earning them a coveted  support slot at the WADstock gig on World Aids Day itself.

Flares From Far Away were chosen for their stripped back acoustic indie and beautiful harmonies. The band is made up of Tom Southward (lead vocals) and Elliot Whiteside (guitar), both  from Tapton School.

One of the judges, John K from The Violet May, was so impressed by their efforts that he offered to record a free demo at his studio for the aspiring artists to help them on their way to stardom.

Fellow judge and BBC Radio Sheffield Raw Talent presenter, Iain Hodgson, added: “There was a really eclectic line-up and every act had something different to offer. Some incredibly talented young people put on some truly great performances.”

To catch Flares From Far Away before they hit the big time, get down to WADstock on Tuesday 1st December, 7pm at the O2 Academy Sheffield – tickets are only £5 and all proceeds go to our three chosen charities.

The six shortlisted finalists have now been announced!

AFS, Flares From Far Away, James Hampshire, Living For Today, MAX and Patrick Lord will all compete at legendary gig venue The Harley on Saturday 21st November, 1pm-4pm to battle for that coveted spot at the WADstock gig on World Aids Day, Tuesday 1st December.

New Yorker Aimee Ward, creator of last year’s first ever Bachelor Auction in Sheffield, is gearing up to do it again and needs a little help from the local ladies to rake in the men.

On Friday the 13^th November 2009 at 7.30pm, Aimee will be embarking on Sheffield’s second Bachelor Auction sponsored by social marketing firm diva creative ltd, at SUFC Bramall Lane, Platinum Suite, mirroring the success of her past Big Apple bachelor auctions. This year, proceeds will go to our three HIV/Aids charities to celebrate World Aids Day.

“Last year, most of our bachelors came from women calling me offering up their male friends and relatives so I want to ask all the ladies to do it again.

“Even though we already have a few signed up, we’re desperate to get more men of all ages involved, so if you know anyone in their 20s, 30s, 40s and even 60s + let me know!”
