Hammerhead Shark Giving Birth On Beach in Florida

An inconsiderate fisherman caused a hammerhead shark to give birth before a large audience on a Florida beach. According to the Daily Mail UK, a fisherman pulled a 5-foot-long, pregnant hammerhead onto the shore of Panama City Beach in Florida, causing the animal to go into shock and have her babies.

A crowd quickly gathered around the shallow water where the shark mom was settled to get a better look at the creature. Onlookers soon noticed that the animal was giving birth while thrashing on the sand. Several animal lovers near the scene tried to drag the shark back into water, but said the predator continued to swim to the shore.

Park rangers arrived shortly after the incident to help the shark, but sadly the animal passed away. Things turned out better for the sharks' surprise pups. Hammerhead pups are extremely independent and often swim away from their mom shortly after birth, as was the case with these newborns. They will spend the next few weeks fending for themselves in the shallow waters around the beach before heading into the ocean.

This shocking sight is just one of an increasing number of hammerhead sightings around Florida. The sharks are often seen in shallow reefs or following fishing boats. Hammerheads are not known for attacking humans and usually go after smaller prey.

Looking more like something out of The Lorax than what you would find in Africa's Kalahari Desert, these fantastically decorated telephone poles are actually home to the aptly named Sociable Weaver bird.

The communist little soarers don't just build massive homes for their own kind—they even allow other species of birds to settle down in the nests, which could very well hold up to 100 birds at a time. According to the San Diego Zoo, the South African pygmy falcon Polihierax semitorquatus (otherwise known in layman's terms as good-for-nothing squatters) "relies completely on the sociable weavers' nest for its own home, often nesting side by side with the sociable weavers.

Photographer Dillon Marsh has an entire series on these whimsical bird colonies called Assimilation. A few of the nests even look big enough for a human to crawl into, although its hard to imagine we'd be greeted with quite the same open wings as their feathered brethren.

The first time I saw an Icelandic Horse, it was laying on the ground, on its side. “Horses don’t lay down”, I thought. “It must be dead!” And then it rolled onto its back, all the way over onto its other side, and stood up in one semi-fluid movement. “It must be insane!”Laying down and rolling aren’t the only tricks the Icelandic Horse has up its sleeve. It has also mastered the art of looking fabulous. With their vast array of colors, incredible manes, and sassy attitudes, Iceland’s horses were born ready for the runway. And they certainly don’t shy away from the camera. We had a blast taking these portraits of some of the island’s most photogenic residents.

Most of Iceland’s horses spend their time wild and free in the highlands, instead of on farms. Like sheep, they roam at their own whim, with neither supervision nor control, able to graze wherever they choose. But once a year, toward the end of summer, they’re brought down from the mountains.

Icelandic HorsesWe happened to be in Sauðárkrókúr during this year’s roundup, which sees a group of farmers recruit their friends, neighbors, and even some courageous tourists to hop into the saddle and gallop off into the vast highlands. Their mission: locate and herd every horse in the area to a corral set up outside town.

Think pink … you’re not seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses: This albino dolphin is pink.

Unique … the bottlenose – first spotted in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary in Louisiana, by boat captain Erik Rue, 42, in 2007 – has surfaced again.

Attraction … tourists are flocking to the lake in hopes of seeing the rare mammal.

Rare sight … “Pinky” is believed to be the only pink dolphin in the world, and has “reddish” eyes. It is usually spotted with its dark grey mother.

One of a kind … there are only 14 other known albino dolphins in the world, all of them white.

Healthy glow … “The dolphin appears to be healthy and normal other than its coloration, which is quite beautiful and stunningly pink,” said Mr Rue, who estimates he has spotted Pinky more than 40 times.

Maramadi – The Bull Race of Kerala

At the annual Maramadi festival during the post harvest season in the villages of Kerala in southern India, a peculiar bull race takes place. A pair of bulls are sent charging down the football field-sized rice paddy field soaked in ankle deep water, while their guides hang onto the tail or onto a harness and slide through the mud. The fields are freshly ploughed and the muddy water splash about as the bulls are raced by their guides. The villagers gather around these fields keeping safe distance. The air is rent with excitement fervor as there is stiff competition over these races.

A pair of oxen is usually managed by three persons forming a participating unit. Nearly 30 such units participate in the race which starts at noon and continues up to dusk. Like professional Jockeys these persons are also well trained and are experts in managing the oxen during the race. The oxen participating in for these races are specially fed and trained.

The most famous among the Maramadi races is held in Anandapali village Pathnamthitta District near Adoor City in Kerala. Here it is held around August 15th every year and coincides with the Onam celebrations.

Welcome to Earth!

The top 10 species were selected by an international committee of taxon experts from more than 140 nominated species out of an estimated 18,000 species named in 2012.

The top 10 list is released each year on or about Carolus Linnaeus’ birthday on May 23rd. Linnaeus is the “Father of Taxonomy” and his work in the mid 18th century was the beginning point for “modern” naming and classification of plants and animals.

Here they are:
Chondrocladia lyra : A carnivorous sponge, that lives 2 miles below the surface of the northwest Pacific Ocean.

Sibon noalamina : Resembling poisonous coral snakes, this harmless snake eats slugs, earthworms and snails.

Cercopithecus lomamiensis : A monkey with a delicate human-like face surrounded by a frill of fur.

Ochroconis anomala : Staining the prehistoric arts on the walls of the Lascaux cave, this fungus is black in color.

Eugenia petrikensis : A 6.5 feet high evergreen shrub that’s endangered. This shrub displays clusters of dark pink flowers.

Viola lilliputana : This tiny, Lilliputian violet stands just 1 cm tall and grows only in the Peruvian Andes.

Paedophryne amanuensis : Even smaller than the Lilliputian violet, this frog is just a mere 7.7 millimeteres in length.

Semachrysa jade : Posted on Flickr and spotted by an entomologist, this lacewing insect is green in color.

Lucihormetica luckae : A cockroach that glows in the dark! A single specimen discovered 70 years ago, it is thought to be extinct.

Juracimbrophlebia ginkgofolia : Resembling a gingko, this hangingfly lived in the Middle Jurassic period.

We are not alone. We share our Earth with millions of different species. But most of us are too busy with humans. We do not spend much time to learn about others. At least we can try to give a warm welcome to ten new species every year.

That’s Jeanne Calment, a French citizen who has the longest confirmed human lifespan in history at 122 years and 164 days. She was born on February 21, 1875 and passed on August 4, 1997 [Source]. She’s lived through both world wars, seen humankind land on the moon and witnessed the birth of the Internet.
So it may come as a surprise to some to learn that there are animals that have lived far longer than Jeanne and thus, any confirmed human being for that matter. Here are ten interesting animals that have lived longer than any human on our planet.

Ocean Quohog – 507 years old

Arctica islandica, common name the ocean quahog, is a species of edible clam, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Arcticidae. This species is native to the North Atlantic Ocean, and it is harvested commercially as a food source. This species is also known by a number of different common names, including Icelandic cyprine, mahogany clam, mahogany quahog, black quahog, and black clam. Ocean quahogs live in water between 25 and 1,300 feet deep. In the northern part of their range, they’re found in shallower water closer to shore. [Source]
The mollusks are known to live exceptionally long lives with two specimens found to have lived 507 years (Paul G. Butler et al.) and 375 years (Schone et al.).

Bowhead Whales

Oldest Living Mammals on Earth – 211 years old

The Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) is a baleen whale of the right whale family Balaenidae. A stocky dark-colored whale without a dorsal fin, it can grow to 20 m (66 ft) in length. This thick-bodied species can weigh 75 tonnes (74 long tons; 83 short tons) to 100 tonnes (98 long tons; 110 short tons), second only to the blue whale in weight. [Source]
It lives entirely in fertile Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, unlike other whales that migrate to feed or reproduce to low latitude waters. It is listed by the National Marine Fisheries Service as “endangered” under the auspices of the United States’ Endangered Species Act.
In an article by science writer Ned Rozell of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a whale was analyzed with an age of 211 years. The aging method used measures changes in aspartic acid in a specimen’s eyeball and has an accuracy range of about 16%, meaning the 211 year-old bowhead could have been from 177 – 245 years old. This would make it the oldest known mammal that exists. [Source]

“Adwaita” the Aldabra Giant Tortoise – 256 years old

Adwaita (meaning “one and only” in Sanskrit) (c. 1750 – 23 March 2006) was the name of a 250 kg (550 pound) male Aldabra giant tortoise in the Alipore Zoological Gardens of Kolkata, India. He was amongst the longest-living animals in the world and is believed to be the oldest known tortoise on record. [Source]
According to the BBC, historical records show he was a pet of British general Robert Clive of the East India Company and had spent several years in his sprawling estate before he was brought to the Alipore Zoo in Calcutta about 130 years ago. The shell of Adwaita will be carbon-dated to hopefully provide a more accurate assessment of his age. [Source]

“Hanako” the Koi Fish – 226 years old

Koi fish are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. [Source]
According to Laura Barton of The Guardian: the age of a fish is calculated in much the same way as one works out the age of a tree by counting its rings; most fish have growth rings on their scales known as annuli. This technique was used to estimate the age of Hanako, meaning “flower maid”, the world’s oldest koi carp, who died on July 7, 1977 at the age of 226 years. [Source]

The Geoduck – 168 years old

The geoduck (Panopea generosa) is a species of very large, edible, saltwater clam in the family Hiatellidae. The common name is derived from a Native American word meaning “dig deep”. Contrary to the spelling, the pronunciation of this clam is “gooey duck” and the odd spelling is likely the result of poor transcription. [Source]
The geoduck is native to the west coast of North America, primarily occurring in Washington State and British Columbia. With their extremely long siphons which can be 1 metre (3.3 ft) in length, the geoduck is both one of the largest clams in the world, and one of the longest-lived animals of any type. [Source]
These clams were not fished commercially until the 1970s, but in recent decades a huge demand from Asian markets has developed, and the clams are now farmed as well as being harvested in the wild. The clams currently sell for huge sums of money, which has made poaching a problem.
According to a scientific research paper by J.M. (Lobo) Orensanz et al., the oldest recorded specimen was 168 years old.

Sturgeon Fish – 125 years old

One of the oldest families of bony fish in existence, sturgeon are native to subtropical, temperate and sub-Arctic rivers, lakes and coastlines of Eurasia and North America. Sturgeon is the common name used for some 26 species of fish in the family Acipenseridae. Sturgeons ranging from 7–12 feet (2-3½ m) in length are common, and some species grow up to 18 feet (5.5 m). In April of 2012, the Wisconsin state Department of Natural Resources tagged a 125-year-old sturgeon that measured 7 feet and 3 inches in length and weighed 240-pounds. The fish, which wasreleased back into the river after it was tagged, was also the largest ever captured in Wisconsin. [Source]

Orange Roughy – 149 years old

The Orange Roughy is a relatively large deep-sea fish belonging to the slimehead family (Trachichthyidae). It is found in deep waters (180 – 1,800m / 590 – 5,900 ft) waters of the Western Pacific Ocean, eastern Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, and in the Eastern Pacific off Chile. The fish is actually a bright, brick red color; however, the orange roughy fades to a yellowish orange after death. [Source]
The maximum published age of 149 years (G.E. Fenton et al.) was determined via radiometric dating of trace isotopes found in an orange roughy’s otolith (“ear bone”). [Source]

Freshwater Pearl Mussels: 210 – 250 years old

The freshwater pearl mussel, scientific name Margaritifera margaritifera, is an endangered species of freshwater mussel, an aquatic bivalve mollusc in the family Margaritiferidae. This species is capable of making fine-quality pearls, and was historically exploited in the search for pearls from wild sources. [Source]
In recent times, the Russian malacologist Valeriy Ziuganov received worldwide reputation after he discovered that the pearl mussel exhibited negligible senescence (i.e., lack of symptoms of aging) and he determined that it had a maximum lifespan of 210–250 years, according to his published report entitled: Life Span Variation of the Freshwater Pearl Shell: A Model Species for Testing Longevity Mechanisms in Animals.

Red Sea Urchin – 200 years old

Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, commonly called Red Sea Urchin (although its color ranges from pink or orange to nearly black), is a sea urchin found in the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to Baja California. It lives in shallow waters from the low-tide line to 90 metres (300 ft) deep, and is typically found on rocky shores that are sheltered from extreme wave action. [Source]
A Sea Urchin’s spherical body is completely covered by sharp spines that can grow up to 8 cm. These spines grow on a hard shell called the “test”, which encloses the animal. The oldest ones have been measured to be around 19 cm in diameter. [Source]
According to a research paper by Thomas A. Ebert at the Department of Zoology at Oregon State University, the largest reported red sea urchins are from British Columbia, Canada and are expected to be around 200 years old.

Lamellibrachia luymesi – 170 years old

Lamellibrachia luymesi is a species of tube worms in the family Siboglinidae. It lives at deep-sea cold seeps where hydrocarbons (oil and methane) are leaking out of the seafloor. It is entirely reliant on internal, sulfide-oxidizing bacterial symbionts for its nutrition.
The most well-known seeps where Lamellibrachia luymesi lives are in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 500 to 800 m depth. This tube worm can reach lengths of over 3 m (10 ft), and grows very slowly. [Source]
According to a research article by Sharmishtha Dattagupta et al., the tubeworm has a lifespan of over 170 years. [Source]

Lioness adopt a baby Oryx

A lioness in Uganda has adopted a baby oryx, game wardens at the Queen Elizabeth National Park have reported.

The lioness is said to allow a female oryx several minutes each day to feed the new-born calf.

The oryx would normally represent a tasty meal to a lion, but this is not the first time the lioness has placed a calf under her protection. The lioness is said to be fiercely protective of the oryx and becoming very aggressive when any human come near.

They say money can’t buy love – but £1 million will get you man’s most expensive best friend.

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the priciest dog in the world after being sold for 10 million Chinese yuan, or £945,000 or US$1.5m.

Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China.
And it’s lucky his new master is a multi-millionaire, because the hefty price tag doesn’t factor in Big Splash’s diet – enough chicken and beef to fill a growing 180 lbs dog, spiced up with Chinese delicacies such as sea cucumber and abalone.

Pricey pup: A Red Tibetan Mastiff called Big Splash has become the world’s most expensive dog

His owner will need a big house too, as adult Tibetan Mastiffs have been known to weigh as much as 286 lb, or more than 20 stone – the same as a size able rugby player. However the typical weight for a fully grown Tibetan Mastiff is around 13 stone.

But according to breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash is a ‘perfect specimen’ and the extravagant price for the 11-month-old is completely justified.

He said: ‘We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay’ – adding that the new owner could charge almost £10,000 a time for Big Splash to breed with a female.
The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewellery and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth.

Not only is red considered a lucky colour, but Tibetan mastiffs are thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners’ health and security.

Tibetans believe the dogs have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into Shambhala, the heavenly realm.

Owners of the breed have included Queen Victoria, King George IV and Genghis Khan – who supposedly took 30,000 of the dogs with his army in his bid to conquer Western Europe.

These days there are only around 300 Tibetan mastiffs in the UK , and puppies sell for a more reasonable £850 to £1,000.

James Pally, a Tibetan mastiff breeder from Pantymwyn near Mold in Flintshire, North Wales, said:
‘They are very smart and they think for themselves and can sense danger very acutely.
‘Tibetan mastiffs were originally used to guard the livestock and they are very good with other animals and they love children.

‘I have six of them and if you don’t give them enough attention they sit in front of the TV.’

The title of most expensive dog in the world was previously held by a Tibetan mastiff called Red Lion, who was valued at £915,000 last year.

Animal Prosthetics

People have been applying prosthesis to help the handicapped ones ever since the Egyptians – but probably only recently we realized, we’re not the only ones suffering the pain on Earth. Unlike people, animals can’t cry or complain about the pain, and the less resilient ones lead a much shorter and harder life in case of any accident. Even though veterinarians do provide considerable help, more serious surgeries or even usage of a special prosthetic is a fairly recent thing the humanity started doing for the animals.

While in the wild, animals can get hurt in a number of different ways, be that a disease or an accident, getting harmed by a human or larger predators, or any other. However, now more and more centers worldwide are applying mechanisms to help the animals recover from the injury and live as normal of a life as possible. Check out some inspiring examples of the how people have helped the animals by fitting them with a prosthetic needed!

Eagle

This bald eagle, named Beauty, was shot by a poacher. After three years a group of volunteers made her a prosthetic beak, which was a key to her survival: an eagle, which has to be hand-fed, is eventually euthanized, and Beauty was once again able to grasp food herself.

Due to a necrotic disease, 75% of Fuji’s fin had to be amputated. It was the Bridgestone company, one of the largest manufacturers of tires, that created a silicone replacement for Fuji, making her the first dolphin with a prosthetic fin.
