SEO: Content is Everything

Content is king, it is everything! Though it still has other criterion for SEO, without content, it's nothing. What I am going to emphasize is that you must concentrate more on your content. Of course, url and heading are helpful when it comes to SEO. But, don't forget, links, urls of your site are just occupying a small little part of your site. In majority, contents take up more than half of a site/blog.

There are few types of contents. Text-written contents will face no problem when you working on SEO, however, images, javascripts, and frames, will be more troublesome. If your contents are mostly text-written, then you will not worry about search engines unable to crawl/read your content, instead, worry more of your competitors. Images, javascript, videos, clips...which are about the animations, search engines are hardly crawl on them. They don't read images, but they read text. Though search engines are getting sophisticated, guess what, they are not that advanced until have the ability to watch animation as though a human and classify them accordingly. Well, search engines made a big deed——classifying billions of sites accordingly to the certain keywords. Sarcastically, why do some of uninformative sites will be placed on top of the better site? It sometimes related to contents. Of course, a site which provides great informative articles is considered as a great site, but eventually, they fail to optimize keywords, and keywords-stuffed contents will seem to be gross and odd. Why? There are many reasons——backlinks, contents... But, for now, I'm going to say about contents first.

The bad and uninformative site can win over a great informative site, as they got their keywords optimized. A great site should concern of this big problem. Instead of just posting a great articles, try to place some keywords into the contents, until the optimum keyword density.

Relevancy of your contents

Relevant contents are important as long as quality is concerned. If you have a dog-adopt site, and you provide an information about cats instead of writing dog-adopt related content. In a common sense, you are getting out of your theme. So, try not to get out of your theme. i.e. If you write about dog-caring, it's alright with the theme of dog-adopt which is still has some relationship. So, avoid yourself writing something out of the topic!

Every single blog needs traffic, for the sales, PPC——money. Let's put some exception for those who take blogging as hobby, or a place for them to express themselves. However, mostly, monetized blogs need traffic in order to get money. Though generating traffic is not a-day task, you can slowly work on it. It is as though a long term invest.

There are a lot of ways to get dense-traffic. i.e. SEO. However, SEO is a lifetime task. This is neither thing you can get within a minute nor a second. Put it in this way, it's like planting. You decide planting a tree from a scratch——a seed, and you have to water and provide mineral from time to time. If you stop, it might eventually stop growing, to the extent, wilt. So, it applies to SEO. If you stop updating regularly, for one day, you might be overcome by the others and step atop you.

Quality Contents

Content is king, this is an undeniable fact. And, contents are something important to SEO. Optimizing your keywords well in the contents is utterly helpful in getting you higher rank. The major search engines love dense-keywords content, provided that it is not exaggerate until being considered as spam. You may see the post about keywords density.

Bing and Google are picky on what they expected from a blog or a site. Don't worry! There is something you can do. Just stay focused on what you are writing, relates the keywords to the title and the theme of your site, don't get out of your theme.

Backlinks

Backlinks are something you should concern of. You can get instant traffic via backlinks. However, as long as the quality of the backlinks is concerned, then you should consider the relevancy of the site to your site. Put it in a nutshell, the backlinks came from a site, where their theme are similar to yours then the backlinks are considered as a quality one. Don't forget, PR is also an important criteria to rate the quality of the backlinks. High page rank of the site, regardless of its relevancy, it should be also considered as a good backlinks. Maintenance of your site

New! New! New! Everyone loves new things, fresh ideas, and so are the search engines! Search engines like sites which always update their contents. And, design of your site should be constantly change as to catch attention. Don't always use the same template and make no changes, in long-term, your readers may feel bored of your design and get out of your site instead of staying for further reading.

The second one would be much more neatly than the first one, if you see them with a pair of normal eyes. =) But, if you still see no difference, then go further reading on my explanation.

If we were putting the source code like the first example, the source code and the writings will be eventually messed up together and make the readers dizzy. The second one looks better right?! In common sense, these source codes should have some formatting and style, to beautify them as well as making the contents stay neatly tidy! Well, the examples have the short source code, what if they were ten times of the length of these source code? You will really need a box to seal them off!

This is all about readability and visibility of your contents. Without a good looking of your contents, even how much traffic you get, you will eventually lost them. So, when you try to insert source code, don't be idle to style them neatly which will just take you about less than a minute.

Well, getting a domain is something necessary for someone who start blogging, a sale page, or even a business page. If you want to find a free domain with .net or .com, this may upset you. If they were still free, millions of people would snatch them away. Then, the web host would eventually dwell the domains for free, and just like you are just adopting one's life, without any returns. Besides, Google search engine, Google itself has a lot of tools, like Google Analytics, Google Webmaster tool, gmail, and bla bla blaa. A lot of free tools you can get from Google. But today, I'm going to talk about Google Analytics first.

Why use Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a tool that can help you track some detail of your visitors once they visit your site. But, what for you track them, no point at all? That is the question. There are, indeed, a lot of benefits underneath. If you know some details about your visitors, make sense, this will help you to know more of your target. Put it in a nutshell, you will know your market well if you know where are your visitors/customers at. Though I'm still not an expert of using Google Analytics, I can tell you that the most useful function is tracking location of the visitors. Of course, it won't tell you their exact locations (maybe) or IP, but it can show you roughly the locations of your visitors, like the state of their country.

Besides, you can check whether the visitors are fresh new or old customers. And, the happiest thing I found in this is, looking at the number of page views. What do bloggers want, they want somebody to see their writings, contents and their site! In a simple word, attention! But, without this tool, you won't see the page views, number of visitors per day. In this market, there is not only Google Analytics that can perform these functions. Though there are a lot of alternatives, try Google Analytics, it's free and useful!

Meta tags are <meta...> tags in the HTML of your template which describe your site in HTML code. These codes are presented in HTML and it will not be appeared in the design of your blog. Put it simply, meta tags are embedded in HTML script of your blog. Thus, we human cannot view them unless we access to the HTML and look for the code. Unlike search engines, they can crawl through and get to know what your blog are by reading those meta tags (in 1990s).

Using Microsoft word is a traditional way, but it is always a best thing for me to check my sentence. (I'm using the 2003's version, I don't know about the latest version) As what I've using, it cannot correct your grammar mistakes automatically like what grammar checker does. New Year, New Template

With the upcoming Chinese New year, I had made a change in my blog——the brand new theme! Well, blogspot templates are not as good as wordpress's, but luckily, I found wordpress theme which converted into blogspot template!

Fortunately, everything goes fine. Once upon a time, I have a phobia about editing blog template, which made my life miserable and eventually used the previous template and made no change ='(. Now, I found it quite interesting. The templates are built-in with guides and tutorials. These add-on help me a lot when I got stuck on it.

SEO: Customizing Blogspot Title Tag

In order to get our site higher ranking, we can optimize keywords, links, tags, get quality backlinks, and so on. However, title tags are important in optimizing your site too. As I mentioned before, crawlers read only text, and if you customize the title tag properly, this will improve the visibility of the site when spiders crawl over your site. Besides, this will also help users to easily obtain their information if you customize them properly.

Before customizing, your title tag should be like this:

It's quite ugly, and messy. If you search for ‘links’, what you hope to see in the search results are about ‘links’. However, if the search results display your blog title first, this will cover some important keywords of the post title. And, this make sense, they will select others' site rather than yours. For the extent, to be realistically, who cares about your blog’s title, they just care about what they wanted to find. ='(

But also search engines, they like to crawl your sites with post title first then only your blog title. Well, Google owned blogger, sarcastically, blogger are not prepared readily for the purpose of SEO though. So, you got to change your title tag in order to improve visibility in search engines. Don't worry, there are few easy steps then you can completely customize your title tag for the needs of SEO.

Submission of Links to Search Directories

After submitting links to the 3 main search engines, you can now submit your links to search directories. This step is optional, but if you are really aim for high ranking in a few days time, you should rather consider this. Of course, there are thousands of search directories out there, and it's impossible to submit your link to all of them. But, submission of your links to search directories may help promoting your site in certain search results.

Web Directory

Here's something you should remember before submitting your links to the directories.

Check whether it is a link farm or not. (You may compare differences between link farms and web directories)
Find web directories that have categories of links.

Link Directory

To search for link directories, you may go to Google, and make some searches for 'web directories' or 'submit URL'. It's quite simple and easy, that might take you about few minutes time and get lifetime traffic! If you still have not find one yet, go to my sidebar which column is labelled with 'Directories' and click on few links right there to submit your links.

There are no free meals on the Earth, even if do, it's rather depend on luck. That's true. If you want to submit your links to certain free web directories, then you need to pay for it in another way. Most of them may ask you to post a tracker code on your site, in an exchange of promoting your site. Well, that's the deal. You want free meal, you pay for it. =)

Recommendations

There are thousands of web directories, and of course, I couldn't introduce all of them to you. But, there is a great directory, which I found recently——dmoz.org. It's a huge directory with many thousands of links, and categorized neatly. You may submit your link to them, and get traffic!

Difference between Link Farms and Web Directories

Link farm, as if it sounded, so contagious where all 'criminal' activities gathered at. Indeed, link farm is something that has been offending the algorithm of search engines, and it's as though a criminal for search engines. Eventually, get blacklisted by search engines, this is the consequence.

However, some might say, web directories are containing thousands of links, or even millions, in essence, they are so-called 'link farm', but, why still they are not considered as a link farm but a web directory which is legally accepted by the search engines? Somehow, they could still enjoy the benefits of being higher rank page yet not being banned by search engines, like those huge Open Directory Projects.

There are reasons why link farm are being blacklisted or offending the algorithms of search engines, while link directory are still able to stood still legally on the higher rank page. See the difference and you will get the reason why. =)
Difference between Link Farms and Web Directories
There are a few big different features between link farms and web directories that might split both of them into worst and best. Link farm is those directories that are not categorized, and displayed in a haphazard way. And, link farms are designed for the sole purpose of manipulating search results, with no benefit for both users and owner.

However, web directories are those directories that have categories of links. i.e. If your sites are about internet marketing consultancy, it would rather categorized your site in internet>marketing>consultant. While, links farm are doesn't have these features. And, make sense link farms are not providing users useful links according to what they are searching for. So, they are just like a spammer, spamming links, while directories seemingly the same, but they do provide users with useful links according to their searches.

As what I've known, there is still a difference between link farm and web directory, that is link farm is "free for all", in which they accept any suggestions that you pay. i.e. If you suggest the links which is "friendly-related" then it is categorized as what you suggest.

But in a web directory will have an independent review. What I mean is that your site will undergo categorization by the editor of the web directories, and you can not suggest even you have a better words that suit more about your link. And, this category will be editorial discretion, not under webmaster control.

The pros (web directories) and cons (link farm)

This will relate to backlinks. Web directories which categorize your site to certain category, then the relevancy may help you in getting quality backlinks, whereas link farm do not. Link farms have no categories, and might give you bad backlinks. Well, before submitting links to directories, you should consider of quality of the backlinks. So, don’t ever choose those directories which don’t have categories.

Search engines control almost everything of your ranking. You may write plenty of great articles, with optimized keywords, and have done all of what search engines required. However, if your site is not crawled by search engines spider, then your efforts may be totally wasted. It is important for you to submit your links to the main search engines and search directories. Nonetheless, submission of your site's links to the directories might not be a-day-works as there are thousands of directories available in this market today. So, choose some and submit your link to them. What you have to do is just submitting your links once to them, and the outcome (endless traffic) would be more than you paid for!

Most of you have known of what are the main search engines and how do they work. Now, what you are going to do is to submit your links to the main search engines which is considered a big directories containing most of the sites——Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Well, most of us by now should know Google—a huge search engine, and some may make searches by using Google as a main search engines. As a popular search engine, it indexes billions of sites. Bing

From what Mr.Wiki says, "Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search) is a web search engines from Microsoft." As a layman's term, algorithms of Bing are most likely opposite of the Google's. I don't know why, perhaps, it's nearly impossible to optimize 3 of the main search engines and get your site on top of the search engines for a beginner. Of course, it is still possible but not in a-day-time, instead, it might take you about ages of time. But, now all you have to do is to optimize the keywords and submit your links to Bing if you have not submitted yet.

SEO: Importances of Anchor Text and Internal Links

Keywords are the most important thing in SEO, but links should be concerned too. When you start optimizing both of them, then your site might get a better advantage or better chance than others in order to get a higher ranking. Lately, I've briefly talked about type of links——inbound links and outbound links. Now, I'm going to talk about anchor text and internal links.

Anchor text

What is anchor text? In a common definition, anchor means a heavy metal that is attached with a chain and dropped over the ship to keep a boat in place. Well, that sounds weird. Anyway, it's not related, I just defined it for fun. =) So, back to the topic. An Anchor text should be generally like a text that describes the links rather than displaying the links’ address. e.g. The World Avenue and 'The World Avenue' is the anchor text for http://world-avenue.blogspot.com/. Put it in a simple way, it's a text that you clicked on to open a certain hyperlink.

Compare with keywords in links.

Importance of anchor text

Certainly, inserting anchor text will be much better than displaying the entire address of the links. In my point of view, as an ordinary human that owns a pair of normal eyes, would rather prefer the links with anchor text to hyperlinks. Imagine that, how messy it will be if you put it in www.dog-care.com/2011/01/top-10-on-dog-cares.html. And, so are search engines. Anchor texts help search engines spider/crawler to understand well about the links.

And, there is something that you should know about anchor text. If you get a backlinks from a quality site, however, the anchor text is something like 'the worst site I ever seen', you will hardly accept it. That's why, anchor text are important.

Internal links

You should have know a little bit of what anchor texts are and how important are them. Now, you should have known too of what inbound links and outbound links are all about. I've slightly discussed on importance of links. However, there are some details that you must know about links—inbound links and outbound links.

There are few types of links, but generally, links can be classified into two types, which are inbound links and outbound links. Inbound links are backlinks, which I've discussed before, whereas outbound links are links that direct out from your site. i.e. If www.world-avenue.blogspot.com links to www.there.com, then it is considered as outbound links for www.world-avenue.blogspot.com and inbound links for www.there.com.

Inbound links are backlinks (sorry for repeating). Backlinks are quite important for your site to get a higher ranking for a certain search query. And, backlink is one of the vital criteria that should be considered in SEO. Let me repeat again, backlinks may be good or bad, in term of quality. If you have thousands of backlinks, then sure you are doing good deed for your site to get top-ranked. However, if these thousands of the backlinks are coming from some low-repute site, like link farm, then you should stop working on it. This would make thing worse, which probably kick you down from getting higher rank.

Thus, don't build bad backlinks. If you don't have heavy backlinks, don't panic, there are few ways to solve this problem. You may buy some backlinks. There are a lot of ads about selling backlinks, or even with a little search, millions of results will come out and sure you will find a suitable one. However, most of us made a few mistakes when blogging that we don't even realize sometimes. These matters a lot in getting you top ranked, or even push you out of the thousandth ranking.

Content of your page are important. Your contents are not only read by humans, but also search engines. Search engines crawlers are not humans, they don't have the ability to see pictures, and text is the merely way for them to understand your content well. If there are grammar mistakes in your contents, then how can crawlers understand well your contents are about and how to give you a good ranking in search results.

Over-stuffing keywords

Over-stuffed your contents with keywords is a big deal. It bothers your reputation to the search engines. Let's say if you write contents with 'SEO' keywords and 'SEO' occupied 50% of your contents, most likely you will get penalty. It looks exaggerated, but this is what someone else did. If the content are stuffing keywords, for a human-readers, also may feel gross. Definitely, your reputations will decline as well.

This case is mostly similar with grammar mistakes. But, this mistake brings you more trouble than grammar mistakes. A little bit of grammar mistakes may be forgiven, but keywords misspelled are big problems. If you're optimizing ‘dog care, but you misspelled it as 'dog core', and in common sense, who know what is ‘dog core’. If even humans do not understand what are you writing about, and so is a search engine crawler (a machine). Maybe a little misspelled are acceptable, but try to avoid these careless mistakes.

Alt-text for images

Alt-text for images is important in SEO as I have mentioned frequently, though it's not as important as title,contents and url. An alt-text will help you in SEO when you used it wisely and rightfully. On the contrary, abusing it may bring you troubles too. Don’t over-stuffed keywords that are not related. Give a best-suitable name for the images, and do not stuffed keywords into it.

Duplicated contents

Everyone knows copying is wrong. Do not even try to duplicate someone else’s contents provided if the webmasters are giving you permission to do so. If they do give you permission, don't make it 100% alike, or even 80%. Crawler doesn't know, and don't usually judge (a machine don't judge). If you copy, then it's definitely, offending the algorithm.

However, there are ways to overcome this problem. Try to collects information, and put your ideas into it and then produce your own original and genuine articles.

I have mentioned once that keywords are most important in SEO. And keywords in URL shouldn't be ignored as it helps a lot in getting you for a higher ranking. By the way, there are few parts of your web page that needed to emphasize with keywords.

Importance of Keywords

Title of web page

Title of the web page is important as it can briefly summarize the whole content of your site. If you're writing about dog related content, then your title should be about dog. i.e. if the url is http://dogs-care.net and the content of your title tag should be '<title>The Dog Caring Centre - All the dog's needs!</title>' or '<title>The World Avenue cares about dogs</title>' or something like that. Anyhow, your title must be added in with the keywords you would want to optimize. This will help you in getting top-ranked for the particular keywords.

Heading

Heading tags is like <h1>,<h2>,<h3>... Usually, headings can also help you in SEO. You can unlimited inserting words in heading, but in a common way, heading is written short yet clear. If you over-stuffed words into heading, well, in some extend, it will ruined the page readability. Well, you should make it 4~6 words and 7 words as the maximum, and try not to write the heading with 3~4 lines of words. If possible, finish them in one line.

Contents' Text

Contents somehow rather should be more concerned. In the beginning of the paragraph, try to insert some keywords. This will help you in SEO, and the crawler usually likes the beginning of the paragraph. Well, grammar error and keywords misspell must be avoided.

As I stated, keywords in your URL are very vitally important, as they will give you a great advantage to boost your ranking (compare to those who don't have). i.e. Let’s say we use 'dogs' as the keyword. If you search dogs, thousands of sites are coming out. But, if you are managing site that involved this niche, how will you get on top of the others? That's the question. There are thousands of ways to boost your ranking, but we talk about using link to optimize your keyword first. If you have a link entitled with 'dogs-care.net' will be better as compared to 'animal-care.net'. For example, if you have a ‘dog-care.net’ while the other don’t have ‘dog’ in their url( search query for dog). To a certain extent, you might able to be in top-page while the others are still struggling in getting the 100th ranking. That's how important it is.

Directories of links

What's about directory of links? This example might able to give you a clearer explanation. i.e. http://world-avenue.com/about.htm. The highlighted words are the file name of the directory of the links. Besides the main page url, which is http://world-avenue.com, the directories of the main url do help in SEO.

i.e. If you're given http://dog-care.net/dog.htm, http://dog-care.net/animal.htm and http://animal-care.net/animal.htm, then the first one will be rather better than the second and the third one. Definitely, third one will be the worst among them. Well, I guess you should understand now, if you are optimizing the certain keyword, try to emphasize the keyword in URL before you creating it.

Recently, I have discuss about what's SEO, how to choose keywords and so on. After choosing the right keywords, the next step you should do is to optimize it.

What is the meaning of optimize? To be optimum, meaning that you must optimize the keyword friendly with search engines. You shouldn't neither over-stuff the keywords (which is considered as spamming which will eventually lead your site being banned), nor sparsely input the keywords. You should rather optimally input your keywords.

How many % should be considered as optimum?

Before optimizing certain keywords, we must already realize the best percentage of keyword density that will make your site and search engine friendly. It depends on search engine usually because the search engines crawler decides whether which percent of keyword density is considered the best. Well, most likely around 4% - 7% of keyword density is considered as best, while 1~2% are considered as low keyword density. However, if you over-stuffed keywords in your web page for about 10% or above, then you might eventually get penalty from search engines. This will lead your site into blacklisted. Don't ever over-stuffed keywords, which are disobeying the rule of search engines—spamming.

How to check the keyword density?

There are many tools, which are free, that you can utilize them anytime without limit. Try to use google keyword density analyze tool. Inserting your URL, then click on 'analyze'. Then the results will come out and show you the keyword density accordingly to several section.

Before you start optimizing a certain keywords, choosing the right keywords are important. You should choose the keywords that best describe the content of your sites/blog. Besides, it has to be a keyword that the users used to find your site. Find yourself a keyword phrase with maximum of 50,000 monthly searches. By using Google Keywords tool, you may start to search for the right keywords now!
