The World Debate Institute at the University of Vermont USA and ZIP, Za in proti, zavod za kulturo dialoga/ Pro et contra Institute for culture of dialogue Slovenia invite all scholars and practitioners of argumentation, rhetoric, debate, and educators using deliberative education methodologies to the Third International Conference on Argumentation, Rhetoric, Debate and the Pedagogy of Empowerment -- THINKING AND SPEAKING A BETTER WORLD.

Two conferences have been held, one in Koper and the other in Ljubljana Slovenia. The next conference is planned for October 28-29-30 2010. The conference will be hosted by The University of Maribor, Faculty of Pedagogy, Department of Philosophy. Both previous conferences attracted over 85 scholars from around the world.

The conference will welcome scholars and educators from diverse fields for vigorous dialog and exchange. This conference will unite scholars of argumentation and rhetoric, teachers, and organizers of local, national and international debating networks to discuss critical thinking and advocacy discourse through pedagogy. We intend for the conference to welcome all who are involved in public discussions and debates about different issues.

This conference is extremely timely. A global information society which seeks reasoned solutions to problems through broad citizen involvement needs to develop and refine techniques for criticizing and validating ideas through discourse and then impart these to new generations of citizens if we are to create a better future and avoid looming crises. This conference represents a unique opportunity to share ideas, network and cross-fertilize with global critical thinkers.

The program for the conference will have three themes. Submissions are encouraged to center their work on one of the three themes and to submit proposals to the appropriate conference division. Interdisciplinary work that might fit into more than one category is welcome.
•Argumentation and rhetoric. The use of logic and reason to criticize and analyze ideas through communication. Those interested in research on argumentation theory, criticisms of communication acts and scholarship on argumentation practice are encouraged to submit to this division.
•Debate. The use of formal argumentation forums to educate and empower citizens. Those interested in work on the practice and theory of debate competition, public debates, research on the impact of debate for participants, and theorizing about debate paradigms are encouraged to submit to this division.
•Critical thinking/pedagogy. Teaching and the methodology of teaching in the active classroom. Those interested in using debate, discussion and argumentation in classrooms, discussion of experiences and teaching lessons relating to communication and critical thinking are encouraged to submit to this division.

A committee of conference organizers and scholars will examine submissions to each division. Deadlines and committees will be announced soon.

Those wishing to attend the conference without submitting a paper are very welcome but must register.

It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the organising committee of Botswana Worlds 2011 to invite applications for Deputy Chief Adjudicators (DCA) to join our Adjudication Team. We are looking for 2 or 3 individuals who,

have strong adjudication and debate experience at the international level in the Worlds format (organisational experience is a plus but is not required)

are actively involved in their debate communities and will be until December 2010

have time to communicate regularly (by email and skype) with other members of the adjudication team

can be in Botswana at least one week before Worlds 2011 (19th December 2010)

work well under pressure, doesn't really need sleep, and has other essential qualities of an exceptional DCA

The Application Process
There will be two phases, an Application phase and a Public Review phase

Application Phase - this phase begins now and ends on the 13th of November. More information below.

Review Phase - will run for two weeks soon after the application deadline expires. A list of all applicants will be published and the Worlds debate community will have the opportunity to provide feedback. The objective of the feedback should be to provide further information about the candidate that is relevant to their application or character references. Feedback should be provided directly to the adjudication team and will be treated with utmost discretion and sensitivity. These comments will not be made public (even after worlds) or accessible to the applicants (even if they are successful). Also the number of comments a candidate gets will have no bearing on the chances of their appointment.

Interested applicants should send
a) A Cover Letter (please explain your motivation(s) for applying. Also, please briefly discuss what you think the challenges of being a DCA at Worlds are and why you are up to them).
b) A Detailed Resume (please include commitments until December 2010)

Your application will be processed solely by the adjudication team (James Dray and I) and Convenor (Justice Motlhabani). No one else will view any content related to the entire application process. Candidates will be chosen based on what we believe is the best for Botswana Worlds and the World Universities Debating Championships.

Please send all applications to adjudicationteam@botswanaworlds.com by 12GMT 13th November 2009.

Please feel free to email questions or comments to the same address, or directly to James or myself.

Looking forward to hearing from (some of) you soon!

Cheers

Logandran Balavijendran

Q. I would like to go to Worlds in Turkey. How can I register?
A. Unfortunately at this point you can't. Registration happened back in June and was over subscribed in 90 seconds. You can visit http://www.kocworlds2010.com/ for more info. The best thing to do is aim for Worlds in Botswana and in the meantime look at attending some of the big IVs or regional championships. WUPID in December is also well worth looking at.

Q. We have tried to register for Worlds and can't. Can you help?
A. No I can't. I don't have any role in the organisation of Worlds in Turkey. My Emeritus role on council is a non-voting honorary one so I don't have any real power to help. To be honest even if I did have the power I wouldn't attempt to override or influence the hard working org committee.

Q. Where can I find more information about Worlds?
A. Other than this site (http://www.debating.ie/) visit http://www.kocworlds2010.com/

Q. Are there any Training guides for Worlds?
A. Yes. Lots. Best place to look is http://worlddebating.blogspot.com/search/label/Training

Q. Are there any videos of Worlds format?
A. Yes. Again lots. The best place to look is http://debatevideoblog.blogspot.com/

Q. What topics are likely to come up?
A. That's not quite like asking what the lottery numbers are but it's not far behind. A quick look at past Worlds motions show that it covers a wide range of subjects. In recent years I have published a list of potential topics. I'll republish it but bear in mind that the list has 130 topics and there are many many other potential subjects. The best way to prepare is to be as well read as possible.

Q. What are good sources of information on topics?
A. At this stage it's about reading and understanding as wide a range of subjects as possible. Be up to speed with the latest topics and issues. Assuming you are going as a team or squad then share the work. I suggest you buy versions of Time, Newsweek and the Economist. The Economist World in 2010 special edition is due our soon and is always useful.

On the internet start reading the BBC website. As well as breaking news they often have good topic outlines and backgrounds. Some other websites exist with more general principle based topics. Check http://www.debatabase.org/ and http://www.debatewise.com/ as both have talking points on many topics.

If you are looking to create a case file then remember that the key is that you have to know the information is there. You won't have time to read every thing between now and the start of the tournament. Create an index of the topics you have in the file. And it has to be paper based. Worlds rules prohibit the use of electronic equipment.

Q. What happens if a topic comes up I haven't researched?
A. This isn't just likely it is certain. It is important to understand that no matter how much research you do you will have to debate several topics which you have not prepared for. You can't have covered everything. In a case like this don't panic but go back to the "first principles" post in the training section. http://worlddebating.blogspot.com/2005/12/preparing-for-worlds-3-first.html . One key thing is not to panic. Be comfortable speaking and this leads me to the next question.

Q. How do I train for Worlds?
A. The best way to train for debating is to debate. It's one thing to know what to do and how to do it but it is another when you are standing up there translatig thoughts to speech. I recently spoke in a debate for the first time in several years (usually I judge). I was so rusty it was scary. I knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it but I just struggled more than I expected. The best way to prepare for Worlds is to debate as often as possible. If you can go to some IVs. If you can't get to many IVs then organise Worlds style debates within your society. The more you speak in debates the more natural and fluent it will become for you.

It will bring together the debate teams from Harvard, MIT, BU, and BC, and special guest Steve Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, to debate four topics: the public health insurance option, "don't ask don't tell", sending more troops to Afghanistan, and nuclear energy. The event is hosted by Politalk – a Boston area political talk program - in partnership with Debatepedia, who is providing extensive pro/con materials on the above topics for audience members and the general public.
After some late cancellations and non-payments, we have our final batch of teams available this week. We will also be confirming whether or not those judges who have applied to Can Okar or one of the DCAs will be invited to attend.

What is different this time is that we are allowing institutions to ask for more than one team up to a limit of four teams. This means that if you currently have three teams, you can apply for one additional team. If you have no teams, you can apply for up to four. We will not need additional judges at this stage so if you go from three to four teams, we will not require an additional judge.

Given the late stage at which we are, we will need those universities that want to send teams to contact BOTH Hasan Sadik Arik at h.s.arik@kocworlds2010.com and Fatih Mehmet Inal at f.inal@kocworlds2010.com by Wednesday 4 November 2009. We cannot entertain applications after this stage. If demand exceeds our supply, we will carry out a draw that evening (in the presence of a member of the Worlds Council Executive) and invite teams to pay us on Thursday. You will have no more than one week (up to 12 November 2009) to prove that you have paid into our account so we only invite those teams to apply that can actually pay. This is important: people keep on taking up our offers and then not paying – after this week, we will finalise the numbers with our hotel and no additional registration can be taken. If you apply now and don’t pay, please recognise that you will have stolen a place irretrievably from someone who could have come. We will indicate how you can prove you have paid in our mail to you on Thursday.

The cost of registration will be 490 EUR per person. There are many institutions who have already paid this who will be reimbursed as we noted in our previous mails about registration (i.e. they are now in the top 360 by virtue of drop-outs).

I would like to thank those who attended the SOAS IV last weekend. I have attached the tab. Particular congratulations go Cambridge B (Doug Cochran and Sean Koh) who won the SOAS IV beating LSE A (Rushabh Ranavat and Art Ward), Oxford HJ (Thomas Hoskins and Ben Jasper) and TCD Hist C (Huw Duffy and Jonathan Kelly) in the Final. Mhairi Murdoch (Cambridge A) topped the speaker tab.
For anybody who happens to be curious, the motions were:

R1: THW never release prisoners on compassionate grounds.
R2: THBT states should redistribute wealth beyond the provision of basic security.
R3: THBT Western countries should stop forcing the developing world to respect patents for life-saving drugs.
R4: THBT the West should treat Islamic terrorists and suspected terrorists the same as prisoners of war.
R5: THW abolish state-endorsed marriage.
Semi: THBT an adult can consent to anything.
Final: THBT those who buy non-essential items rather than donating to charity are morally responsible for the deaths of starving Africans.

I am the founder and chief executive of Debatewise.com, a leading debating web site. I'm also on the board of the International Debate Education Association, one of the largest youth debating organisations in the world. I'm emailing to propose a way of engaging young people in a global debate on issues around the Copenhagen summit.

The idea arose from the World Online Debating Championship, an event which has just ended and was the first of its kind. We had entrants from 25 countries and five different continents and they told us they loved debating with young people from other cultures in a way that didn’t involve great travel expense or environmental cost.

We propose using our software, our experience and the extensive contacts we have in the global debating community, to get young people involved in a global debate around the specific issues arising from the summit.

We propose two specific elements to our event:
During the summit: We form a panel of 1,000 young people from various different countries around the world. Some members debate the issues or conclusions from the summit as they arise, others vote on these debates. This forms an up-to-the minute indication of what young people around the world think of what delegates are doing.

After the summit: Young people debate the impact of the agreements and commitments made during the summit on their own country. They discuss whether they will work, the consequences that may result and what else they would like to see happen. In this way, we take what happens during the summit into the lives of people and make it real for them. We get the opportunity to counter misconceptions and motivate people to continue the work started in Copenhagen.

We would be very grateful for any help you could give us recruiting people for our panel. We are looking for English speakers (not native, but they will need a high level of understanding of written English and the ability to write well in English). They should be under 25, be divided equally between men and women, live in all continents of the world and represent all major religions.

If this is of interest, we’d send you a short email which you could distribute to people as you see fit.

In return, we’d be happy to ask members of the panel to debate issues important to your campaign and to use them as a mechanism for discovering global youth opinion on environmental issues.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Regards,

Hello everyone,

Many congratulations to Oxford LW, Arthur Learoyd & Leo Watkins, who last night won the UCL President's Cup 2009. Many congratulations also to Oxford BC (Hugh Burns & Jen Coyne), Cambridge JN (Jack Gamble & Natalie Smith) and Cambridge WP (Will Bott & Pierpaolo Barbieri) for reaching the final.

I'd like to repeat my many thanks to Anjana, the Convenor, for her superb organisation of the competition, to all the UCL helpers who made the event possible, to Bryn Gough for being such a great DCA, and to Stephen Goodman for tabbing the competition.

I'd also like to repeat my thanks to all the judges that came along and provided one of the best judging pools at a competition I have yet seen. When an preliminary round panel contains two world champions, a worlds finalist, european champion and euros finalist, I'm not sure things can get much better.

Stephen will be releasing the tab shortly, in the meantime I'd also like to congratulate Jack Gamble from Cambridge for topping the speaker tab. The top-ten speakers are listed below:

1. Jack Gamble
2. Ben Woolgar
3. Jen Coyne
4. Hugh Burns
5=. Pierpaolo Barbieri
5=. Natalie Smith
7. Lauren Pringle
8. Will Bott
9. Ben Lewy
10. Scott Ralston

Many congratulations, and many thanks to everyone,
