Timing a golf swing is when you swing the golf club back to the golf ball as your hips turn to clear out of the way. The reason your hips have to clear out of the way is to allow the club head to return to the golf ball squarely at impact and then follow through and wrap around you. This is the function of timing a golf swing.

How do you determine if your golf swing speed is your issue?

There are times when you may have gone to the golf course and hit the ball beautifully, solid, straight to the right.

This is an indication that your timing was off enough to cause the golf ball to travel right of your target. This was caused because your hips were rotating out of the way to quickly and not allowing your golf club to return to square at contact.

To correct this you need to slow the turning of your hips to allow the golf club more time return to the golf ball before clearing out completely.

There are times when you may have felt like you were swinging beautifully, everything was in sync, but the golf ball traveled to the left of your target.

Again, this is a timing issue in your swing. This is caused by your hips not rotating enough as your golf club makes impact with the golf ball. Your natural tendency is to rotate your hips during your follow through causing you to pull the ball to the left.

How do you correct your golf swing speed issues and get your timing back?

This is a difficult question to answer and one of the most sought after in the game of golf.

Start with your pitching wedge. If you are not hitting your pitching wedge solidly, then you are probably not hitting any of your other clubs solid either.

The favorite club in my bag is my pitching wedge. I find that going out to the driving range and spending time hitting nothing but pitching wedges has helped me to get my timing back.

Your favorite club may be your driver and you’re driving the ball beautifully. If this is the case, then you should go hit a thousand drivers to get your timing back.

One thing is for sure, practicing with the golf club you are struggling with will not help. Avoid practicing with that club until you have gotten your timing back on track.

Whatever golf club feels the most comfortable in your hands is the one you need to practice with. Work with that club to improve your golf swing speed.

Try these perfect golf swing drills designed to fix the slice in your golf swing:

Everything Starts with Your Grip – Take time to review your grip. You should be using what is referred to as a neutral grip. This is when the “Vs” formed by the thumb and forefinger on each hand are pointing towards the right shoulder.

Grip Pressure – You should grip the club just tightly enough to control the golf club, but loosely enough that someone could still yank the club out of your hands.

Proper Setup – Your body needs to be properly aligned with your target line. This means that your shoulders, hips, knees, and feet should line up parallel to the target.

When you practice, take a golf club and lay it down so that the shaft is parallel to your target line. Use this to set up your stance. Use the club you are going to hit shots with to check the alignment of the rest of your body. This will help you develop a feel for proper body alignment.

Golf Ball Position – The golf ball should be positioned so that your hands are ahead of the golf ball. When addressing the ball, your left hand should be positioned just forward of the golf ball. You should be able to draw a straight line down your left arm, through your hands and to the golf ball.

Your head should also be positioned behind the ball at address. Swiveling your chin slightly to the right before starting the swing will help you keep your head behind the ball through impact.

The Backswing – A one piece takeaway is an absolute must. Your arms act as two sides of a triangle, and the third side is the line across your shoulders. Start your backswing by turning the entire triangle in one piece allowing your body to swivel at the hips.

Don’t break your wrists too early in the backswing. Allow your wrists to hinge naturally as you continue your backswing.

Stability – Allowing your body to sway during the swing will lead to poor contact with the ball. You must keep your lower body still. Use your right leg as a brace. This does not mean that you stiffen it so much that you can’t make a good turn, but instead, keep your right leg firmly in place so it can support the swing.

Fixing the slice in your golf swing is not as difficult as it may seem. By taking time to practice and apply the perfect golf swing drills above, you will reduce and even eliminate your slice in your golf swing.

Here are 3 tips that you need to know to improve your golf swing basics and improve your golf game.

Golf swing basics should be simple, straightforward and repeatable. The more you think about your swing the more difficult it becomes to have a consistent swing. Practicing some golf swing basics will allow you to develop muscle memory that you can take to the golf course.

1) Proper Grip – A good repeatable swing begins with the way the way you grip your golf club. You should have a neutral grip. This is when the “V” formed between your thumb and forefingers on both hands are pointed both hands point between the right shoulder and chin.

There are three basic types of hand grip used, the baseball grip, interlocking grip and the overlapping grip.  Whether you are using a baseball grip, an interlocking grip or an overlapping grip making sure that your grip is neutral will allow you to keep the clubface as square as possible during your swing.

2) Pre-Shot Routine – Preparing for each shot is an absolute must. Create a picture of your shot in your mind and you are more likely to execute the shot. Along with visualization, you need to have a consistent method for setting up to execute your shot. When you develop a simple repeatable approach your subconscious mind will take over.

3) Play Your Game – All too often golfers will try to compete with their playing partners. If they hit the golf ball a country mile, then you have to try and drive the ball just as far. This is a sure recipe for failure. Stay within your game, trying to hit the golf ball further than your normal distance will lead to misdirected shots and will get you into trouble.

Many golfers tend to over think the golf swing and complicate the process. Golf swing basics are easy to learn when you focus on these 3 tips.

Let’s focus on two areas of the putting stroke; Length of your stroke and acceleration through impact. Mastering these two parts of your putting stroke will lead to more consistency and sinking more short putts.

Many golfers will take too long of a back swing in their putts.  This will generally lead to decelerating at the point of impact causing your putts to come up short.

When practicing your putting, try putting a tee behind the golf ball off the middle of your back foot. Take your backstroke without hitting the tee. If you hit the tee with your backward motion, then you know you have gone too far back. This will force you to accelerate through impact.

Be sure to hold your finish position with the club head toward the hole.

Practice this putting drill and start sinking your short putts.
