S6 Edge has been photographed in the wild, but a new cache of images has cropped up. They are clearly renders instead of actual photos, but the design appears to match the leaks we've seen so far. This makes them the clearest images of the S6 Edge yet.

The renders give us a detailed look at the metal frame and the curved screen that slopes down on the left and right side.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge renders

The images also show the protruding camera (a 20MP/2160p shooter), which sticks out quite a bit. The element that protrudes from the other side is the hardware Home key, which houses a fingerprint sensor (the non-swipe kind allegedly).

Thanks to Steve Hemmerstoffer for sending this in!

Via (in French)

View the original article here

You can catch the Microsoft MWC Monday event online

Microsoft is all set for the MWC 2015. The company has just revealed it will be holding a press conference Monday, March 2 early in the morning. More specifically, the Redmond company will be sharing its new products 8:30am CET (that's 1 March 23:30PST).

Microsoft is quite probably going to focus on the Lumia 635 with bumped specs. The Lumia 1330 is also expected to make a debut. It is tipped to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, 1GB of RAM, and 5.7" 720p display, and 32GB of onboard storage. The device's main camera is said to be a 14MP PureView unit, coupled with a 5MP front-facing snapper.

We won't be surprised if the Redmond company reveals its future plans for its mobile software and services. Recently, Microsoft launched an Android tablet keyboard, so we may be in for a wild ride on this front.

Microsoft's live stream follows those of HTC and Samsung. Apple, Samsung, HTC and Sony - but also Oppo, Meizu, Huawei. Until recently the breakdown would've implied ones to watch and learn from vs. ones to compete with but the market is changing. Up and coming Chinese makers have really hit a stride.

Xiaomi here has done a fair deal of watching and learning, and still haven't entirely outgrown the copycat phase. Yet they do have not one, but two flagship phablets that seem capable of challenging the big guys. Today we meet the Mi Note, the first of the two to make it to the market.

Unlike the Mi Note Pro, which uses all the latest tech such as a QHD display and the controversial Snapdragon 810 chip, the Mi Note is still one foot in 2014 with a 5.7" 1080p screen and Snapdragon 801. But don't be mistaken - Xiaomi has spared no effort in making the Mi Note a looker, enhancing its camera department and polishing its MIUI 6 launcher. The moment you grab a Mi Note - you'll know you are handling something new and special.

Xiaomi Mi Note official pictures

Some of the highlights of the smartphone are the 13MP rear camera with optical stabilization and 4K video recording, as well as the promising front 4MP UltraPixel selfie sharpshooter. Other things of interest include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE and a 3,000mAh battery. Once you are past the nice metal frame and you've had enough exploring the rear curved glass, you'll be greeted with the new flattened MIUI 6 software.
5.7" IPS 1080p capacitive touchscreen of 386ppi; Corning Gorilla Glass 3Android 4.4.4 KitKat with MIUI v.62.5GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU; 3GB of RAM; Adreno 330 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset13MP camera, f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone dual-LED flash, 4K video capture4MP (16:9) front-facing camera, 1/3'' sensor size, 2µm pixel size; 1080p video recording16/64 GB of built-in memoryActive noise cancellation with a dedicated microphoneCat. 4 LTE (150/50Mbps); Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac; Bluetooth 4.1; GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou; microUSB, USB On-The-GoDual SIM dual standby (1x Micro-SIM, 1x Nano-SIM)3,000mAh batteryLaunches on Android KitKatNo microSD card slotNo user-replaceable batteryNo NFCNo FM radioSold exclusively online
Our hopes that Xiaomi would eventually consider microSD card slots on its flagships were left unanswered. The Mi 3 and Mi 4 didn't pack a memory slot either, so it isn't much of a surprise.

The Snapdragon 801 chip doesn't support an FM radio by default and requires extra chips to do so - Xiaomi chose not to bother.

Finally, the unibody build doesn't allow for a removable battery and this will be a red flag to some, though hardly a dealbreaker.

Xiaomi Mi Note live pictures

We've seen many manufacturers moving to various unibody designs at the expense of having a non-removable battery and we can't say we're that disappointed. The lack of a microSD slot is an entirely different thing though - plenty of room for one in a phablet after all.

We know you are all eager to see the Mi Note in action, so we are done introducing it. Our traditional hardware checkup kicks off right after the jump.

View the original article here

Asus Zenfone 2 aces Antutu, scores above the 50K mark

The Asus Zenfone 2 showed up in the Antutu database, posting impressive results. The 50401 figure in the screenshot is sufficient for the Zenfone 2 to inch ahead of the likes of Snapdragon 805 powered Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and Meizu MX4 with a Mediatek MT6595 inside.

The Zenfone 2, which was tested, had a powerful Intel Atom Z3580 chipset with a quad-core processor, clocked at up to 2.33GHz. The GPU is not Intel's work, instead it's the PowerVR G6430, borrowed from Imagination. It should be pointed out, that the score was achieved with "only" 2GB of RAM on board.

There's a catch though. With Asus' naming convention you rarely know which exactly device you're talking about. The smartphone in question sports a 5-inch display with 720p resolution, and the chipset has it easy, having to push out less than a million pixels.

On the other hand, the Meizu MX4 has a 1,152 x 1,920px panel, which is more than double the amount. Not to mention the Note 4 and its QHD display with, you guessed it, four times as many pixels.

Nevertheless, it's a very respectable achievement from the Atom and it's precisely what Intel needs to fight for a more prominent position in the Android realm.

Source

View the original article here

Sony Xperia E4g is already up for pre-order in the UK

Sony unveiled the Xperia E4g just a few days ago, as the 4G-capable version of the original Xperia E4. And today it's already up for pre-order at a few online retailers in the UK.

For now, all of them are only offering the phone in SIM-free and unlocked form. So if you're one to usually purchase your handsets with an operator contract attached, you still have some waiting to do before you can grab an Xperia E4g.

If, on the other hand, you have nothing against paying full price for a smartphone, then the Xperia E4g can be yours for ?110 at MobileFun, ?125 at Clove, or ?129.99 at Amazon.

MobileFun and Amazon don't say anything about a release time frame for the device, while Clove mentions that its first stock of the Xperia E4g is expected in early April. So even if you do pre-order, it will be a while before the Xperia E4g is delivered at your doorstep.

The Xperia E4g has a 4.7-inch 540x960 touchscreen, a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2MP front snapper, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable internal storage, and a 2,300 mAh battery. It's powered by MediaTek's MT6732 chipset, which comes with a 1.5 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU.

Via

View the original article here

Galaxy S6 teaser from Sprint hints at March 26 launch

We've seen the three shades of six appeal, but a verified Sprint employee posted a different teaser that shows both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Tucked into the lower right corner is a text reading "Offer ends 3/26/15" or in other words, March 26.

The whole deal is that you can win one of six Galaxy S6 handsets if you pre-register for the S6 and S6 Edge announcement. It won't be outlandish to think the end of this offer is tied to the actual launch of the new flagship pair.

The AT&T teaser was labeled "Spring 2015" and Spring starts on March 21 this year, so things are starting to line up. Before that Itskins, a case manufacturer, revealed it will ship its Galaxy S6 cases on March 15.

So far everything points to a late March launch for the new Galaxy royalty, at least in the west. India will be getting it with a week or two delay in early April (according to a local site).

One date is certain though ? the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will be unveiled on March 1 at the Unpacked event that starts at 5:30pm GMT. We'll be there live to bring you first-hand impressions, but you can also watch the unveiling with us on Samsung's live stream.

Source | Via

View the original article here

Here's what to expect from the Mobile World Congress 2015

The Mobile World Congress is one of the biggest events in the mobile industry and it's about to start this very Sunday.

As usual, the event is held in sunny Barcelona, where key industry players will present their latest products.

With so many product announcements happening in a few short days, it's bound to get confusing, so we though we'd come up with this cheat sheet to help you follow your favorite brands.

The largest smartphone manufacturer is preparing to blast through MWC with a flagship duo in the face of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Dubbed "Galaxy Unpacked 2015", the event is scheduled for March 1, and for what we know so far, the focus will fall on smartphones.

According to the latest pieces of evidence, the Galaxy S6 will house a 5" QHD Super AMOLED display and set benchmarks on fire with an Exynos 7420 chipset with an octa-core CPU and 3GB of RAM. At the back, there's a 16MP camera with dual LED flash. Samsung is also equipping the Galaxy S6 with a touch-operating fingerprint sensor, which is a major update over the previous, swipe-based one.

The Galaxy S6 Edge on the other hand will pack a curved display. The latest leaked photos indicate that the phone's display is curved on both the left and right sides. In terms of specs, it's believed to be identical to its regular brother, but nothing is confirmed just yet.

Samsung usually has one of the largest booths at the MWC floor and it's likely that we'll see the Samsung Z2. The handset pioneers Tizen OS and has already sold over 100,000 units in India and Bangladesh. Rumor has it that the Samsung Z2 is in the works already, but it's unlikely a prototype will visit Barcelona.

Recent chatter about the company's tablet line-up includes the Galaxy Tab S2 - a successor to the company's Super AMOLED line-up of slates that debuted last year. Rumor has it that the tablet will be thinner than the iPad Air 2, which measures 6.1mm.

While we don't have our hopes too high up to see the tablet at MWC 2015, it'll certainly be nice. If the rumors are true, we should expect the new Tab S tablets to come in 8" and 9.7" options.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_unpacked_2015_event_is_on_march_1-news-11025.php
Samsung won't be alone in the announcement of flagship smartphones as HTC is expected to put up more than a decent fight with the debut of the One M9. The successor to one of the most beautiful smartphones launched in 2014 promises to fix all the One M8 issues, while keeping all the awesome stuff like aluminum build and front stereo speakers.

Current evidence points that the HTC One M9 will rock a Snapdragon 810 chipset with an octa-core CPU, 3GB of RAM and a 20.7MP camera, which replaces the unsatisfactory 4MP UltraPixel snapper of the One M8. However, this same UltraPixel camera is anticipated to take place at the front as a secondary camera.

The One M9 display will remain unchanged at 5" with 1080p resolution. Expect a 2,900mAh battery and a microSD card slot on board as well.

A larger, phablet-like version of the One M9 dubbed the One M9 Plus is possible to make an appearance, too. While details are scarce, we've seen evidence pointing at a 5.5" Super LCD3 display of QHD resolution - a first for an HTC smartphone. Additional rumored specs of HTC One M9 Plus include Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 20.7MP camera, and Android 5.0 Lollipop. A leaked press image from last month points at fingerprint scanner as well.
While it's not yet confirmed, it's not out of the realm of possibility to see a fingerprint scanner as well. The company isn't expected to out any mid-range smartphones, but the recently announced Desire 626 is certainly going to be on display at the company's
The HTC Petra is the codename for the company's wearable device. It's expected to be a fitness and sport accessory with IP57 certification. The wearable will communicate with smartphones over Bluetooth though it should have its own GPS receiver. The screen will be a flexible 1.8? PMOLED with 160 x 32 resolution. The whole thing will weigh just 23g, but pack enough battery to last three days.

Microsoft will balance its MWC 2015 presence with both hardware and software announcement, as the company has been focusing on opening up its software services for both Android and iOS.

The Redmond-based company is likely to launch an updated version of the Lumia 635 with a bump in RAM. While the rest of the specifications are expected to remain unchanged, we're open to seeing more updates under the hood of the device.

Joining it could be the successor to the Lumia 1320 - the Lumia 1330. Sporting the model number RM-1062, the upcoming device is tipped to pack Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, 1GB of RAM, and 5.7" 720p display, and 32GB of onboard storage. The device's main camera is said to be a 14MP PureView unit, coupled with a 5MP front-facing snapper.

Sony is experiencing rough times in its mobile department, but nevertheless, the company is going to have a solid presence at MWC 2015. We're in for a smartphone and a tablet launch, namely the Xperia M4 Aqua and the Xperia Z4 Tablet.

There's not much information regarding the Xperia M4 Aqua at this point. We can deduce that the phone will be IP68 certified like the M2 Aqua before it. The M4 Aqua will also run with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

In the tablet space, Sony is preparing the ultra-thin Xperia Z4 Tablet, which leaked out a few days ago to sport a 10" 2K display (2048 x 1080 pixels). A leaked description on Sony's Xperia Lounge app points to "the latest ultra-fast processor", which could be the octa-core residing in the Snapdragon 810 chipset.

We'll know everything about the two products on Monday, March 2 when the company will be holding its press conference. More details and, hopefully, a live stream to come.

Huawei is preparing a wearable and a smartphone for its MWC event on March 1.

The company is likely to reveal the Huawei Ascend P8. It's going to be powered by Huawei's latest Kirin 930 chipset, which is the first to be made using 16nm process technology. It will sport a 5.2? Full HD screen as well as dual cameras from the Honor 6 Plus (the device might even get an upgrade to dual-13MP main cameras), and will pack a 2600mAH battery.

The smartwatch, which hasn't had its name leaked yet, will sport 4G LTE connectivity and is destined to rival the Samsung Gear S.

LG seems to skip on smartphone announcements at this year's Mobile World Congress. The company will focus on showcasing its Watch Urbane LTE instead and we can't wait to feel its premium traits.

Acer will not be skipping on announcements in Barcelona and the company has teased new phones and a wearable for MWC 2015. Specifics are a mystery at this point, but from the teaser image the company shared, we're in for some good looking devices.

Meizu will be showcasing the MX4 running three different operating systems - the traditional Flyme 4.0, the new YunOS, and the much anticipated Ubuntu Touch. This is the second Ubuntu Touch smartphone after the BQ Aquaris and with more powerful hardware, the Meizu MX4 should run it a lot better.

Finally, BlackBerry is making an appearance at MWC 2015. The company is holding a press conference in Barcelona, but virtually nothing has been leaked so far. There were indications later last year that the company will launch the BlackBerry Z20, which will slot in between the Z3 and Z30.

BlackBerry Z20 features Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 with 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU and 2GB of RAM. A 5" 720p touchscreen, 8MP main camera, 2MP front-facing snapper, and 2,800mAh non-removable battery are also tucked into the device's 9.5mm thick body.

View the original article here

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua spotted ahead of its official unveiling

A Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is expected to join the Xperia Z4 Tablet at the MWC announcement and though that's not for a couple of days, the phone couldn?t elude the paparazzi any longer. At the same time, the evolution toward 5G must be an incremental process, introducing new technologies in the short- and mid-term that can be tried, tested and proven on commercial networks.”

mmWave Wireless Backhaul

Utilizing a 60 GHz spectrum, Samsung is rapidly nearing commercialization of a wireless backhaul solution that promises to support speeds of multi-Gbps—faster than legacy wireless backhaul solutions.

Samsung’s unique approach combines active and passive radio steering techniques to increase the effective range of a radio without exceeding the power output limits that exist in unlicensed bands throughout the world.

An active antenna array enables a beamformed radio signal to be directed at a passive lens antenna, which further focuses the radio signal toward a fixed point—similar to a contact lens focusing light into the retina of the eye.

By actively focusing the radio signal into a precise and highly accurate beam, the solution overcomes many of the environmental issues that affect communications in the 60GHz band.

The technology is initially intended to target flexible small-cell deployments, where wireline backhaul may be expensive or impractical to implement.

Additionally, the technology is designed to be easy to deploy and maintain, taking advantage of a small, lightweight and modular design with separate radio, antenna and processing modules in each unit.

Meanwhile, the use of active beamforming reduces the need to regularly calibrate the antenna orientation, further reducing maintenance requirements.

With small cell deployments expected to be a significant focus in 2015, this technology will be a solid enabler for high capacity and better coverage with lower CAPEX and OPEX.

Full Dimension Multiple Input Multiple Output (FD-MIMO)

With today’s MIMO solutions, antennas are configured to form beams in one direction—horizontally. In this way, multiple users can each receive a “unique” signal from the antenna, effectively allowing a cell’s capacity to increase since users in the cell no longer compete with each other for the same radio resources.

However, with only one-dimensional beamforming capability, users who are at the same horizontal angle from the antenna (even at different vertical angles) still receive the same signal and thus continue to share radio resources.

With the introduction of FD-MIMO and 2D-array antenna technology, wireless signals can be adaptively beamformed to specific users in both horizontal and vertical domains.

Additionally, with the adoption of advanced digital signal processing schemes, an FD-MIMO antenna system can support higher-order multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) which delivers a multi-fold improvement in system performance compared to conventional MIMO systems.

The technology is ultimately designed to deliver a unique, targeted radio signal to more than eight users in a cell at a time.

The innovative capabilities provided by FD-MIMO systems will also enable support for new deployment and operational scenarios, such as high-rise building support and multiple user services in crowded malls and stadiums.

Samsung is leading the standardization of 3GPP FD-MIMO in the upcoming Release 13 and exhibit this item at MWC 2015 includes an LTE Rel.13 pre-release eNodeB. It is characterized by its compact footprint with the 2D-array antenna, RF components, and baseband board being fully integrated.

mmWave Mobile Radio Access

Samsung has made several critical steps toward demonstrating the viability and suitability of millimeter waves for the next generation of radio access technologies. The technology is expected to play an important role in delivering cost-effective gigabit data rates to users throughout an operator’s mobile network.

In October 2014, Samsung announced the “world’s first successful test” of mobile millimeter wave radio technology, establishing a throughput of 1.2 Gbps at 100 km/h, and establishing a new record for stationary communications of 7.5 Gbps.

The test utilized a licensed 28 GHz band and introduced Samsung’s Hybrid Adaptive Array antenna technology. Samsung believes that research into technologies such as this represents one of several critical milestones toward meeting the goals of 5G technology, including peak throughputs that are 100 times faster than those of LTE, and latencies one tenth of those we experience today.

View the original article here

Samsung Electronics Targets High Quality Data Services with CognitiV Analytics at MWC 2015

Samsung Electronics announces the launch of its CognitiV Analytics solution to provide operators with a powerful, data-driven approach to network quality improvement. The solution combines real-time data collection with efficient congestion relief algorithms to provide in-depth insight into, and resolution of, network traffic challenges, and represents the first new component of its CognitiV OSS portfolio.

“Existing industry analytics solutions typically focus on analyzing data generated by either the network or the user data service alone,” said Jungah Choi, Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology at Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. “These two separate approaches can abstract network issues and do not provide true insight into the end user’s service Quality of Experience (QoE). By analyzing the data on a per-user and per-service basis in real-time, CognitiV Analytics pinpoints the root cause of service quality issues as, or even before, they occur, and jointly optimize the RAN and core policy to enhance the user experience.”

The distinction between each service on a per-user basis is important for ensuring that the problem is well understood, and that response algorithms can properly react and improve overall network quality. To facilitate this, CognitiV Analytics is capable of gathering useful sets of traffic data from network elements, such as the base station or from various network probes. It then processes this information in real time and presents an informative and visual display of any potential issues to the operator’s network operations staff.

One of the primary targets of CognitiV Analytics is video traffic, owing in large part to the vast impact it has on the network. By collecting and analyzing video traffic, the solution can determine if each user’s activity meets minimum Quality of Experience requirements. The network is then able to adapt in a proactive manner by dynamically modifying the network policy.

In addition to video services, CognitiV Analytics is designed to capture usage and QoE data on various other services, including web traffic. Effective real-time monitoring of a broad spectrum of services empowers network operators to ensure that available spectrum resources can be efficiently balanced, thus maximizing network performance and ensuring customers receive the optimal mobile user experience.

CognitiV OSS

Showcased for the first time at MWC 2015, Samsung is previewing a large-scale entry into mobile service provider Operational Support Systems (OSS), with its CognitiV OSS portfolio of solutions and products. With an initial focus on networks and service analytics, Samsung is combining this new offering with the considerable Professional Services experience it has developed building and maintaining LTE networks throughout the most technologically advanced markets in the world. Together, CognitiV OSS and Samsung’s Professional Services are intended to serve operators with a superior tool for solid network performance and user experience differentiation.

Joining analytics within the CognitiV OSS umbrella is Samsung’s award-winning self-optimizing network solution, Smart SON, along with the recently announced CognitiV Cloud Manager for management of virtualized network infrastructure. Samsung has plans to further expand its portfolio into Network Management Systems (NMS) and SDN offerings in the future.

View the original article here

Enhancing Quality of Experience (QoE) with Big Data in the Era of Mobile Video

Our lives have fundamentally changed with the widespread use of mobile devices. Mobile users on average spend more than 2 hours each day using their devices across dozens of different applications. Thanks to the wide coverage of mobile broadband networks these days, people are able to continually use mobile phones and tablets to communicate with friends, work while traveling and enjoy their lives.

When we look at the content people enjoy on their mobile phones, we find that end users enjoy video content more and more. As a result, 40 to 60 percent of total mobile traffic comes from video. As end users are getting more dependent on video content and have less patience when they cannot enjoy smooth video experience because of repetitive buffering and stalling issues due to network congestion, it is getting critical for mobile service providers (MSPs) to ensure the best quality of experience (QoE) in video for their customers.

MSPs have tried to prepare for a tsunami of data usage on their networks by having a wider network spectrum, expanding backhaul and clustering networks. However, MSPs, which are under tremendous competitive pressure, continuously focus on cost efficiency while pursuing customer retention through innovation programs, such as customer experience management and revenue growth.

Big Data Activities in Mobile Networks

Mobile networks adopt Big Data for several purposes. For example, MNOs provide personalized services, targeted mobile advertisement, and more, combining customer profiles with data like location, time, network conditions and device capabilities. They can also collect data from sensors and gateways including telematics data in cars, vending machines, smart meter readings, patient data, and more. Service providers can also include services like data storage and management.

Recently, MNOs are beginning to introduce Big Data to improve their network quality, supply chain management and operational efficiency. In addition to these moves, the use of advanced analytics technology is becoming increasingly more important for intelligent network operations and service optimization.

To minimize CAPEX/OPEX, MNOs need to implement initiatives in sales and marketing, network operations, customer service and administration. In network operations, this can include deployment of small cells and Wi-Fi offloading, data traffic optimization and consolidation of OSS/BSS systems. In addition, MNOs should increase their use of business intelligence and analytics to improve customer service through automation and proactive care. To enhance operational efficiency in systems deployment and services, mobile networks are encouraged to improve churn and maintenance predictions and optimize network traffic.

The customer data collected from MNOs offers a great deal of insight about customers, such as their spending habits. Such information has become important for MNOs and will give marketing departments more opportunities to do highly effective personalized campaigns. In recent years, MNOs are showing great interest in exploring new uses with their customer data not only for operational efficiency but also for external business opportunities.

There are a variety of new revenue opportunities that can be explored. Those avenues can include customer experience management, direct marketing, cross-selling, fraud detection, customer retention and more. MNOs have a great opportunity to generate new revenue by delivering personalized services. Expertise in advanced analytics will be required to identify the appropriate tools.

Big Data Activities of Network Equipment Vendors

Network equipment vendors (NEPs) have focused on introducing innovative and advanced analytics technology while also developing cost-effective network equipment. Advanced technology in measuring analytics is the most important competitive feature among network vendors. Network equipment vendors provide predictive maintenance, traffic monitoring, security, and better QoE services. NEPs are in a unique position to provide differentiation by offering real-time, advanced analytics that combine radio and service optimization. Leveraging recent progress in Big Data, network optimization and root-cause analysis is possible on an unprecedented scale.

MNOs are increasingly taking advantage of predictive maintenance to help them achieve success. Maintenance and repairs pose substantial logistical challenges to service providers in remote areas and in high-density areas with small-cell (picocell or femtocell) deployment. But through predictive maintenance, service providers can reduce the cost of their maintenance services. This would cause less disruption to service and would help to quickly identify when equipment would fail. Predictive maintenance also offers service providers a great tool to take proactive measures in controlling OPEX.

But when does predictive maintenance matter? When used properly, predictive maintenance helps to prevent many other difficulties. For example, in cases when equipment cost is high, predictive maintenance can keep costs down. In mission-critical services or in scenarios with high technical or environmental complexity, this type of maintenance helps to protect businesses and makes sure that the network is up and running properly. Difficult-to-reach locations also benefit from predictive maintenance by reducing travel cost.

Using network analytics involves software monitoring and analyzing historical and real-time data running across networks, cloud service providers, and enterprises. Network analytics not only enhance customer engagement but also customer experience. It’s an opportunity for MNOs to provide premium services with dynamic pricing plans.

Video, Video and Video

Among those services, Samsung has focused on advanced analytics technology to improve video services.

When end users only use the voice service on their mobile phones, service providers only need to satisfy the voice quality of that service. With widespread use of smartphones and affordable data pricing offers, applications such as web surfing and video are becoming more important. MNOs need to ensure web and video service quality is sustainable as well. Hence, it is critical for MNOs to have powerful tools to ensure an enjoyable data experience.

MNOs have been monitoring the quality of data services by conducting test drives with smartphones. They take their smartphones in their car and test the smartphone’s data experience. However, not only is this not cost effective in terms of time and human resources, but it is also inaccurate because it limits the test to the device itself instead of the network as a whole. A recent study shows that mobile video experience is tightly linked to Net Promoter Score, which is a key metric in predicting customer churn. The mobile industry should instead work on improving the legacy of QoE tools.

Easy and Simple Network Operation: Self Optimization of Services

Samsung has developed a groundbreaking solution that analyzes video quality on networks. It analyzes buffering and stalling time of individual video services and enables comprehensive real-time video QoE optimization. Furthermore, root-cause analysis based on data mining automates troubleshooting for any service quality degradation.

After implementing the world’s first LTE technologies, Samsung incorporated important aspects when developing such tools, so that MNOs can provide the most optimal user experience to their customers. Samsung strives to provide effective network support solutions to service providers, empowering them to meet and exceed the expectations placed on them in an ever-evolving, connected world. At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), Samsung will demonstrate CognitiV Analytics, a tool that is an essential part of Samsung’s OSS solutions, which works to enhance Samsung’s professional service capabilities.

View the original article here

Samsung Electronics Introduces Industry’s First 128-Gigabyte Universal Flash Storage for Smartphones

Samsung is now mass producing the industry’s first 128-gigabyte (GB) ultra-fast embedded memory based on the much-anticipated Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for next-generation flagship smartphones. The new embedded memory’s UFS 2.0 interface is the most advanced JEDEC-compliant, next-generation flash memory storage specification in the world.

“With our mass production of ultra-fast UFS memory of the industry’s highest capacity, we are making a significant contribution to enable a more advanced mobile experience for consumers,” said Jee-ho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “In the future, we will increase the proportion of high-capacity memory solutions, in leading the continued growth of the premium memory market.”

UFS memory utilizes “Command Queue,” a technology that accelerates the speed of command execution in SSDs through a serial interface, significantly increasing data processing speeds compared to the 8-bit parallel-interface-based eMMC standard. As a result, Samsung UFS memory conducts 19,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reading, which is 2.7 times faster than the most common embedded memory for high-end smartphones today, the eMMC 5.0. It also delivers a sequential read and write performance boost up to SSD levels, in addition to a 50 percent decrease in energy consumption. In addition, the random read speed is12 times faster than that of a typical high-speed memory card (which runs at 1,500 IOPS), and is expected to greatly improve system performance.

In the future, Samsung anticipates that UFS will support high-end mobile market needs, while eMMC solutions remain viable for the mid-market, value segments.

For random writing of data to storage, the blazingly fast UFS embedded memory operates at 14,000 IOPS and is 28 times as fast as a conventional external memory card, making it capable of supporting seamless Ultra HD video playback and smooth multitasking functions at the same time, enabling a much improved mobile experience.

Samsung’s new UFS embedded memory comes in 128GB, 64GB and 32GB versions, which are twice the capacity of its eMMC line-up, making it today’s optimal memory storage solution for high-end mobile devices.

In an attempt to provide more design flexibility to global customers, Samsung’s UFS embedded memory package, a new ePoP (embedded package on package) solution, can be stacked directly on top of a logic chip, taking approximately 50 percent less space.

Over the next several years, Samsung will continue to set the pace for memory solutions that combine truly high-performance with high capacity.

View the original article here

eMMC to UFS: How NAND Memory for Mobile Products Is Evolving

8GB? 16GB? 32GB? 64GB? 128GB?!! We just can’t seem to get enough. With better cameras and displays – which mean more selfies, bigger pictures and more videos – memory has been a growing priority when consumers shop for new mobile and tablet devices.

Naturally Samsung, the world leader in advanced memory technology, has been working vigorously to develop solutions to equip users with the ability to store as many images, videos and other media, as well as the capability to multitask on the device without jeopardizing the integrity of basic functionality is imperative.

Typically, smartphone and tablets have been using eMMCs (embedded multi-media cards) to store information. And today, we announced the mass production of the industry’s first 128GB embedded memory solution based on Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard.

First, what is eMMC?

eMMC, or embedded multimedia card, is an advanced, managed NAND flash memory for mobile applications and still is the dominant go-to memory solution for many consumer electronics, including tablets, smartphones, GPS systems, eReaders, and other mobile computing devices.

(“Managed” here means that it’s a solution consisting not only of NAND flash memory, but also controller/interface circuits to help sort out processes and improve performance.)

Samsung eMMC memory is extremely compact, typically smaller than a postage stamp, allowing for smaller and thinner devices. Leading manufacturers have favorited Samsung’s eMMC memory because it allows for a smooth pathway to elegant and advanced mobile designs with a short time to market. The latest standard, eMMC 5.1, even furthered the performance and power efficiency.

<Speed comparison between standards>

Then what is UFS?

UFS is the future of Flash memory. UFS 2.0, the most advanced JEDEC standard, offers sequential read/write speeds fast enough to rival SSDs while combining it with the low power consumption of eMMC.

With Samsung’s highly intelligent controller and firmware that provide the highest level of performance and quality, consumers will now have access to a better overall user experience. Along with faster booting, the next generation of flash storage offers a faster data input/output response, three times faster file copy, and three times the multitasking capability. To the average consumer, this means watching high-quality videos, playing high bandwidth games and other entertainment, along with running multiple applications, and downloading or uploading files, all without interruption in functionality.

eMMC vs UFS

UFS boasts a substantial improvement in performance. There are two main factors that contribute to this.

First, UFS has a LVDS(Low-Voltage Differential Signaling) serial interface which has separately dedicated read/write paths. This allows full duplex(two-way interaction) – in other words UFS can read and write simultaneously. eMMC, on the other hand, has a parallel interface which can only send data in one direction at a time – it can either read or write, not at the same time.

Second, UFS has a Command Queue(CQ), which sorts out the commands that needs to be carried out. Thus, multiple commands can be addressed at the same time and the order of tasks can be changed accordingly. eMMC, without CQ***, needs to wait for a process to be completed before moving on to the next one.

The combination of these two, along with Samsung’s engineering feats allows Samsung’s UFS 2.0 solution have a sequential read speed, sequential write speed, random read speed and random write speed each 1.40, 1.66, 2.71, 1.07 times faster, respectively, than eMMC 5.0.

The Evolution of Flash Memory

Ever since its first introduction in 1984, flash memory has come a long way – from the humble thumb drive that so many of us still use, to SD and micro SD cards that have become a vital part of our digital imaging and mobile experiences, to the smart and sleek SSDs that are quickly replacing HDDs, to eMMCs that virtually define how much we can store in our pockets. Samsung has been shaping this industry, topping the NAND flash memory market since 2002 and producing many firsts thereafter.

20-plus years of constant leadership in semiconductor technology now enabled Samsung to be the first and currently only manufacturer to mass produce UFS solutions, and these UFS solutions are expected to bring about a dramatic change in the industry.

Samsung is constantly innovating NAND Flash technology, and is working to build industry-leading products that provide the highest level of performance and quality. It was rated the 3rd most visible company in the United States in the Harris Poll Reputation Quotient (RQ). It was also listed as one of the most innovative companies in the Internet of Things by Fast Company. What about Samsung appealed to these sources, and what do these ratings mean for Samsung?

The RQ is a study carried out every year to find the 100 most visible brands in the US. Although Samsung is no stranger to the RQ’s top 100 – it has found itself there for four years running – this is the first year that the electronics producer has been ranked in the top five. This means that it was ranked more highly than all other technology companies. What is it that makes a company ‘visible’ according to the RQ? There are many criteria in a variety of areas: emotional appeal, financial performance, products and services, social responsibility, vision and leadership and workplace environment.

Not only is Samsung clearly able to make an impression as one of the most visible brands in the US, its forward-thinking philosophy and subsequent achievements have also caught the attention of Fast Company, one of the world’s top business media outlets. Since 1995, it has concerned itself with companies that are leading the way into the future with their innovative thinking and achievements. And now it has rated Samsung in the top 50 out of the 100 companies it has deemed most innovative.

While Samsung’s smartphone success is recognized, its forward-thinking approach to the Internet of Things is what truly impresses Fast Company – it ranked Samsung second, making it the top technology company in their selection. According to Fast Company, Samsung not only has its sights set on the future, it is creating it in the form of cutting-edge wearable devices and smart home appliances. Some of the most innovative appliances that impressed Fast Company were fridges that text you when the door is left open, and robot vacuum cleaners, which can be controlled by a wearable device or your phone. Samsung’s smart devices have led Fast Company to dub it the biggest competitor in the market of the Internet of Things.

Through the acquisition of Smart Things last year, Samsung has gained its own platform for multiple apps and services. This platform can connect to all possible devices – smartphones, tablets, TVs and even light bulbs and locks. Samsung’s progressiveness in the growing sector of the Internet of Things has deservedly received a lot of respect from those at Fast Company.

To find out more about the RQ’s methods and rankings, visit: http://www.harrisinteractive.com/Products/ReputationQuotient

To see the original article ‘World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in The Internet-of-Things’ on Fast Company’s website, visit:
http://www.fastcompany.com/3041652/most-innovative-companies-2015/the-worlds-top-10-most-innovative-companies-of-2015-in-the-in

View the original article here

Samsung extends its LTE offering to Public Safety Era

Samsung announced the launch of its Public Safety solution based on LTE technology (PS-LTE). LTE allows for efficient, cost-effective data and multimedia delivery, and is intended to be both upgradeable and extendable, thus making it a prime candidate for operating the next generation of public safety networks.

“We have established ourselves as an innovator in the commercial LTE market and now seek to expand our strong LTE offerings into public safety,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Pushing the boundaries of telecommunication technology to bring about improvements to the quality of life and the social well-being of people around the world has always been an important goal for Samsung. Our Public Safety solution will enable vastly improved coordination for first responders, improving emergency situations.”

Samsung’s offerings include a Push-To-Talk (PTT) service and PTT client application for devices, evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS), IMS, EPC and eNB. Each of these components is based on the 3GPP Release 12 standard—a first for a solution of its kind, with existing solutions typically being proprietary in nature.

Samsung’s comprehensive PS-LTE solution places primary emphasis on stability and built-in redundancies to ensure the maximum performance and reliability necessary to exceed expectations in tense and time-critical situations.

As an extended component of its PS-LTE solution, Samsung is also developing a dedicated railway and subway security and operations solution, Railway LTE. Based on the same platform as the PS-LTE solution, Railway LTE will enable operators, transport infrastructure firms and governments the ability to greatly improve their ability to cost-effectively and directly maintain safe operation and coordination of rail traffic.

Samsung is currently under discussion to deploy its PS-LTE solution, which will be commercially available in Q3 2015.

As the leading contributor to the 3GPP PS-LTE, Samsung supported the standardization of device-to-device (D2D) and Group Communication System Enabler for LTE (GCSELTE) specifications in Release 12. These efforts received additional and considerable support from the Korean government, the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) and major operators within Korea.

With the Release 13 specification, Samsung aims to further cement its leadership with Mission Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT) and Isolated E-UTRAN Operation for Public Safety(IOPS) standardization.

The Korean government plans to launch the initial PS-LTE network in Gangwon province in 4Q 2015 and will expand to additional major cities by 2016 in order to support the operations of more than 320 government departments and agencies.

View the original article here

Samsung Electronics Realizes the Possibilities of Mobile with New Products and Technologies at MWC 2015

Samsung’s themes at this year’s Mobile World Congress focus on end-to-end performance and usability improvements for network operators and end-users alike, as well as the exploration of new opportunities for mobile networks such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and 5G technologies.

LTE-Advanced Performance Improvements

With operators across the globe having already deployed their initial LTE networks, many are already looking at LTE-Advanced in order to extend network performance, reliability and capacity. Samsung took an early lead in 2013 with the world’s first commercial deployment of the LTE Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, in which it extended the world’s first commercial deployment of three-band CA, along with the user devices to support each launch.

At MWC this year, Samsung will demonstrate the experience it has gained with the showcase of several important improvements to Carrier Aggregation technology, including FDD-TDD CA, Uplink CA, 4×4 MIMO with CA and CA using unlicensed spectrum (commonly known as LTE-Unlicensed, or License Assisted Access), as well as LTE-WiFi throughput aggregation. In addition to its evolved CA demonstration, Samsung will also showcase enhanced VoLTE Solution for coverage extension with the experience of its World’s 1st VoLTE launching.

These technologies will help Samsung push LTE-A networks well beyond what most networks are capable of today, giving operators a competitive edge and enabling new possibilities in mobile service delivery.

CognitiV OSS and Service QoE Analytics

Samsung will showcase for the first time a first look into its developing Operational Support Systems portfolio, CognitiV OSS. Combined with extensive experience in Professional Services delivered for world’s 1st commercial launching and world’s most dense area, Samsung aims to help operators manage and maintain networks in a more proactive and intelligent manner. The goal of CognitiV OSS is to provide comprehensive network operations management capabilities to mobile service providers who seek to deliver maximum quality of experience for users in a cost efficient and effective way.

At this year’s MWC, Samsung will demonstrate the first new component of its OSS portfolio, CognitiV Analytics, designed to give operators direct insight into video traffic on both a per-service and per-user basis. By collecting data from various elements and interfaces throughout the mobile network, as well as service usage metrics, its service QoE component enables operations and maintenance teams to easily identify and track user’s experience degradation in the network and rapidly respond to ensure that users throughout the network receive a consistently high Quality of Experience.

For more details on Samsung’s recently announced CognitiV Analytics platform, please see visit: Samsung Targets High Quality Data Services with CognitiV Analytics at MWC 2015

C-RAN2.0

Based on its commercial experience with centralizing LTE RAN infrastructure, Samsung has introduced an enhanced Centralized RAN (C-RAN) platform, called C-RAN 2.0. In concert with Samsung’s Smart LTE technologies, C-RAN2.0 seeks to introduce efficient baseband pooling and baseband resource scalability in order to provide more powerful network performance while simultaneously enabling potentially significant reductions in operating costs. A more stable network with improvements in performance from cell to cell will improve customer satisfaction, servicing as a strong network differentiator to attract new subscribers and reduce subscriber churn.

For more details on Samsung’s recently announced C-RAN2.0, please visit: Samsung Introduces C-RAN2.0 Solution

HetNet Technology Enhancements

Densification is a core component of LTE evolution strategy and the implementation of additional network layers presents both vast capacity potential and new radio interference challenges. As a leader of this area, Samsung is committed to HetNet densification by introducing significant improvements to its indoor and outdoor small cell lineups, a Wi-Fi integrated small cell designed for low-profile, dense urban deployments, a new wideband amplifier to enable up to 8 simultaneous bands in RF repeater and updated small cell platform which leverages the latest in Lithium-ion Battery (LIB) technologies. In addition to Samsung’ product lineup, Smart SON solution will bring improvements to multi-layer HetNets by suggesting new cell sites and quantity of smallcell in heavy load area

IoT through NFV

Hot on the heels of its selection as sole vendor for SK Telecom’s IoT-dedicated virtualized core, Samsung is providing a first look at its AdaptiV Core solution. The showcase will include a look at the CognitiV Cloud Manager, responsible for management and orchestration of NFV elements throughout the network, and Samsung’s AdaptiV EPC, which allows operators to scale core network functions in and out to balance demand and resource usage throughout periods of high and low network traffic.

In addition, Samsung will introduce an upgraded solution which enables location tracking of devices on in-building networks. Location, along with connectivity and communication standards, forms a critical backbone for IoT applications, and has thus far been a considerable challenge in many in-building mobile environments.

More information on Samsung’s AdaptiV Core, please visit: Samsung’s Virtualized Core Solution Chosen to Support SK Telecom’s Nationwide IoT Network

The Road to 5G

Samsung will showcase three new technologies that promise to significantly improve network capacity and responsiveness. A new 60GHz Wireless Backhaul solution represents an effective solution to rapidly deploy new cell sites. The technology utilizes dual active (beamforming) and passive antennas in order to transmit up to multi-Gbps in the unlicensed band.

Full Dimension-MIMO (or FD-MIMO), greatly extends the capabilities of MIMO technology by allowing an active antenna area to deliver dedicated wireless signals to multiple users within a single cell, greatly improving cell capacity while reducing inter-cell interference.

Finally, Samsung will demonstrate its 28GHz mobile radio access technology jointly with several operators. The technology received significant attention and pushed barriers in both stationary and mobile transmission speeds in October 2014, including successfully achieving data rates of 7.5Gbps and 1.2Gbps respectively.

These technologies are expected to form a critical foundation for the types of services and applications that 5G is envisioned to support, including advanced cloud computing, virtual presence, augmented reality and no-delay mobile delivery of ultra hi-definition video formats such as 4K, 8K and beyond.

For more information on each of these three technology demonstrations at MWC, please visit: Samsung Demonstrates a Trio of 5G Technology Candidates at MWC 2015. So if you have, say, a Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 3, or Galaxy S5 you're pretty much already covered (though some rollouts have only made it to some regions at this point). But what if your device of choice is the Galaxy S5 Mini?

The Korean smartphone maker did promise that it too would receive Lollipop, but that hasn't happened yet. And it looks like you're still in for quite a wait. Samsung's French arm has revealed that the S5 Mini is slated to taste the latest version of Android sometime in the second quarter of this year.

That starts in April and ends in June. So clearly Samsung's priority is to give its highest-end offerings the software update first, then starting to work on mid-rangers such as the Galaxy S5 Mini. This is no surprise, really, as it's been the company's modus operandi in the past too.

Yet if you were hoping for the S5 Mini to receive Lollipop at the same time as the proper S5, well, then this will disappoint you. On the other hand, at least we now have another confirmation that the new bits are indeed on the way - even if the whole thing will take a while.

Source (in French) | Via

View the original article here

The LG G Flex 2 available in the Netherlands starting March 31

The LG G Flex 2, which was unveiled at this year?s CES, and launched in South Korea late last month, is heading for its first European market. News has surfaced that LG's latest flagship will be available in Netherlands starting March 31.

This is only the second international market the device is entering following Singapore, where the G Flex 2 will be up for preorder on February 28. The curvy handset is slowly branching outside its native Korean market and even if you have to wait a while to pick it up at a local retailer, Amazon Germany already offers you to book your unit.

The phone will cost €699 for the 16GB model, which is around the €650 it is currently listed for online. No information is known yet about pricing and availability of the 32GB model. This is still significantly lower than the original LG G Flex, which cost some ?850 when it first came out.

The G Flex 2 is the company?s first mobile device to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset, which has received some bad press lately, especially after there were reports that Samsung ditched it in favor of its own processors for its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S6. However, LG has clarified that it has had no issues with the SoC, and has termed its performance as "quite satisfactory".

Other specifications of the device include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 2.1 MP front-facing camera, and 13 MP rear camera. There are 3GB of RAM in the international version of the device, while the Korean one is limited to only two. The smartphone also packs in a 3,000 mAh battery.

Source (in Dutch)

View the original article here

Redmi Note 4G now available in India without registration

Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4G, which was launched in India back in December last year, is now available for purchase on e-commerce website Flipkart without any registration.

Although the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has said that it is now making enough units of the device, and can sell it without any flash sale, it's highly likely that the move was made because the phablet's demand in the market has gone down, given the fact that it did not sell out during its last flash sale that took place on February 10.

The news comes just a couple of days after the Mi 4 sold out in just 15 seconds during its first flash sale in the country. Clove UK has answered both of these questions by putting the new handset on pre-order.

It's priced at ?100 and will be available in late March. Clove also cleared up the OS situation ? the Xperia E4 will launch with Android 4.4.4 KitKat and get 5.0 Lollipop later. Note that the price is for the single-SIM version, there's another one with two SIM slots but there's no price for it yet.

Expansys is also accepting pre-orders but hasn?t listed a price or a launch date. MIUI 6 was announced back in August last year, but the budget-friendly smartphone has so far been left out in the cold.

Admittedly, it will be a beta version of the ROM at this point, released to the public to iron out unforeseen imperfections. The official version should follow in the coming weeks though. The company has also promised that the update will be rolled out to its entire smartphone lineup at a later stage.

MIUI OS is Xiaomi's iOS-inspired thoroughly-customized Android overlay. It abandons Android's two-level interface and ditches the app drawer in favor of a number of homescreens for all your apps.
